  14. An R version of the electric ID 3 will arrive in under five years, using four-wheel drive and performance e-motors, promising even better acceleration than the current Golf GTI. Volkswagen sales boss Jurgen Stackmann said: “If there is a future for R it must be electric, it’s very simple. It won’t be next year, because we need to define what R is in the electric world." In the interim, VW will dip its toes in electrified performance with a plug-in hybrid Touareg R, said Stackmann. Volkswagen ID 3: vital EV revealed with up to 341-mile range “Clearly the word R means high output combustion engine, and that will now move to higher output plug-in hybrid systems and then it will move onwards to R electric. We need to get firm on our electric vision fast.”Talking about an ID 3 R, Stackmann said the solution must address range and performance. “Today, if you look at high performance and electric, it’s actually a huge compromise, and you pay the penalty with a small range. “We should be able to deliver something meaningful in under five years but it takes a team of developers, and it’s turf without a lot of expertise at the moment. We have to start that journey.” VW R&D chief Frank Welsch said that a performance ID 3 was one of his top priorities to optimise the ID 3 over the coming years. “We should have the same as cars such as the Golf, the GTI and R. People like performance and I’m sure people will love performance in ID cars too.” He added: “The situation is different - even in the normal ID, we have good performance right from the very beginning, you just touch the pedal and you feel the punch. From 0-60km is like the GTI. No GTI is faster than the ID 3. At the upper end, of course GTI is better.” The ID R race car, currently breaking records at various locations around the world including Pikes Peak and the Nurburgring, is key to showing the public that electric performance can be even better than traditional performance, said Welsch. Talking about requirements for an ID 3 R, he said: “We need four wheel drive and a performance e-motor. It won’t be called GTI, let’s see whether it’s R or something else.” “In under five years is okay. We have a lot of other work to do with other ID models and the Golf, Tiguan and so on, before then.”

  15. Supercooling human livers to -4C triples the time they can be kept before transplant compared with putting them on ice, US researchers say. It slows the metabolic rate to prevent damage, Nature Biotechnology reports. It means organs can be kept viable for more than a day, which researchers say could revolutionise organ transplants. The next step will be assessing how long supercooled organs function in large animals such as pigs, before moving to human clinical trials. The team at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School pioneered the technology in rats five years ago. The animal's tiny livers were chilled while nutrients and oxygen were pumped through the organ's blood vessels. However, there were challenges going from a 10g (0.35oz) rat liver to a 1.5kg (3lb 5oz) human liver. As organs get bigger there is a greater danger of ice crystals forming, which can rupture cells and kill tissue. 'Quite phenomenal' The solution was to prepare the liver for supercooling by using protective agents that prevented freezing. Experiments on discarded human livers showed they could be kept for 27 hours, rather than the typical nine hours when the organs are stored on ice. The research team said the results were "quite phenomenal". One of the researchers, Dr Reinier de Vries, said: "This is a big breakthrough in organ preservation. "This is the first time that we actually show that it is feasible to preserve human organs at sub-zero temperatures." 'Simulated transplant' The livers functioned as expected - based on tests such as oxygen use, bile production and lactate metabolism, when they were brought back up to temperature. They also survived a "simulated transplant" when they were connected back up to an artificial blood supply. The researchers could not experiment on organs that would have been suitable for transplant. But they believe organs that started off healthier could be preserved much longer. "[It's] in the order of days, not sure how many," researcher Dr Korkut Uygun told BBC News. "We obviously can only do these experiments with grafts that are not good enough for transplant and it is great that despite being organs that are already injured, our experiments can be preserved for over a day." Good match The longer an organ can survive outside the body, the greater the chances of getting it to a patient that needs it. It also gives more time for tests to ensure the donor organ is a good match for the patient. The NHS has already started using a "warm liver" approach to keeping the organs going for longer. They are connected to a perfusion machine, which keeps the livers at body temperature and gives them the oxygen and nutrients they need. The super-cooling technique builds on this approach. Dr Korkut Uygun said: "We'll need both perfusion and super-cooling to really make a difference in the world. "The ultimate goal here is true organ banking (for years), so it's not like if we reach 24 hours the problem is solved and we can all go home." The British Liver Trust said hundreds of people died every year waiting for a transplant. Pamela Healy, the charity's head, said: "Finding new ways to increase the number of organs available at any one time is vital to reduce waiting times and increase the chance of a successful transplantation taking place. "This research project into increasing the number of livers available for transplant is welcomed. We await further research into this potentially exciting development."

  16. Scientists have a recording of the worst day on Earth; certainly the worst day in the last 66 million years. It takes the form of a 130m section of rock drilled from under the Gulf of Mexico. These are sediments that were laid down in the seconds to hours after a huge asteroid had slammed into the planet. You'll know the event we're talking about - the one researchers now think was responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs and the rise of mammals. The high-resolution account of this catastrophe was recovered by a UK/US-led team, who spent several weeks in 2016 drilling into what remains of the crater produced by the impact. Today, this 200km-wide structure is positioned under Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, with its best preserved central portions sitting just offshore of the port of Chicxulub. The team pulled up a great long core of rock but it's a particular 130m-long section that essentially documents the first day of what geologis A 12km-wide object dug a hole in Earth's crust 100km across and 30km deep This bowl then collapsed, leaving a crater 200km across and a few km deep The crater's centre rebounded and collapsed again, producing an inner ring Today, much of the crater is buried offshore, under 600m of sediments On land, it is covered by limestone, but its rim is traced by an arc of sinkholes The section is a nightmarish jumble of shattered material, but its contents are arranged in such a way that scientists say they can discern a clear narrative. The bottom 20m or so, is dominated by glassy debris. This is the rock that was melted by the heat and pressure of the impact. It lapped across the base of the crater in the subsequent seconds and minutes. This then transitions to a lot of fragmented melt rock - the result of explosions as water rushed over the hot material. The water came from the shallow sea covering the area at the time. It would have been pushed temporarily out of the way by the impact but when it came back in and made contact with the broiling rock, it would have set off violent reactions. Something similar occurs at volcanoes where magma interacts with seawater. This phase covers the first minutes to an hour. But the water keeps coming, filling up the crater, and the top 80-90m of the core section is built from all the debris that was in this water and ultimately rained out. Larger fragments initially followed by finer and finer material. The timescale for this is the first hours after the impact. And then, right at the top of the 130m core section is evidence of a tsunami. The sediments all dip in one direction and their organisation suggests they were deposited in a high-energy event. Scientists say the impact would have generated a giant wave pulse that would have crashed on to shorelines hundreds of kilometres from the crater. But this outward train would also have had a return pulse and it's the debris carried in this tsunami that caps the top of the rock sequence. "This is all still Day One," says Prof Sean Gulick from the University of Texas at Austin. "Tsunamis move at the speed of a jet plane. Twenty-four hours is a generous amount of time for the waves to move out and come back in again," he told BBC News. Prof Gulick's team is confident in the tsunami interpretation because mixed in with the deposits are soil markers, and charcoal - evidence of the great fires that would have been triggered on nearby landmasses by the heat of the impact - all brought back to the crater by the returning wave pulse. Strikingly, what the team doesn't see anywhere in the 130m core is the presence of sulphur. That's surprising because the asteroid would have hit a seafloor made up by perhaps a third to half with sulphur-containing minerals, such as gypsum. For some reason, the sulphur must have been preferentially ejected or vaporised. But this only goes to support the po[CENSORED]r theory now for how the dinosaurs met their demise. So much sulphur mixed with water and injected into the sky would have dramatically cooled the climate, making life a struggle for all sorts of plant and animal life. "There was a global climate model run with just a hundred gigatonnes (billion tonnes) of sulphur injected into the atmosphere and that came up with 25C cooling for at least 15 years, which puts most of the planet below freezing," said Prof Gulick. "And the conservative estimate for the amount of sulphur released is 325 gigatonnes. That's orders of magnitude more than you would get from any volcano like a Krakatau which can also cool the climate for a short period."

  17. Hey everyone, We wanted to highlight some changes that are coming to the top end of Twine Peaks in the v10.30 update. Twine Peaks Rewards Twine Peaks 100+ 4 Player Missions will be getting a rewards buff! Pure Drop of Rain are receiving a 25% increase for PL 140 Non-4 Player Missions (Example: if you would have earned 64 Pure Drop of Rain before, now you will earn 80 Pure Drop of Rain) Evolution material rewards have been increased for all 4 Player Missions over PL 100, with PL 140 missions receiving an additional increase in rewards on top of the general improvement to evolution material Drop. Check out some specific examples below: A 4 Player Mission that would have rewarded 168 Pure Drop of Rain in a PL 108 zone prior to the 10.30 update will now reward 256 Pure Drop of Rain. A 4 Player Mission that would have rewarded 168 Pure Drop of Rain in a PL 140 zone prior to the 10.30 update will now reward 320 Pure Drop of Rain. Note: These are just examples, you may find yourself earning more or less than these examples depending on how many badges you earn during a mission. Mission Badges & Mission Rewards Earning badges increases the amount of rewards you earn! When you earn a badge for completing a bonus objective like “Find the Atlas Quickly” or badges for combat, building, and utility, you increase the total amount of rewards you will earn upon successfully completing the mission. The values of these badges are different from mission to mission, varying in value based on how long, difficult, and resource-intensive the mission is. The treasure chest levels at the end of the mission roughly reflect this, but the bar being filled at the bottom is important too. For example, there’s a difference in the amount of rewards received between a Level 3 Chest with an empty bar and a Level 3 Chest with an almost full bar. If you want to receive the maximum rewards out of a single mission, make sure you earn those badges! Stay awesome!

  19. did you know that the Empire is Total War: Warhammer’s most po[CENSORED]r race? Seriously. It must be something to do with the fact that the world of Warhammer Fantasy is filled with countless horrifying creatures, and the idea of a race of humans somehow holding the line against that is quite appealing. Whether the undead, dragons, orcs, rats, or in this case, Lizardmen, fighting these monsters is just another day in the life (though probably the last) for an Empire soldier. So Total War: Warhammer 2’s new lord pack, The Hunter and the Beast, which brings the Empire into the New World, will no doubt be a po[CENSORED]r one. rumble in the Jungle The two campaigns mainly centre around four legendary hunters — Wulfhart seeks them for their aid in the campaigns’ final battle, whereas Nakai just wants to kill them for insulting the jungle. In Wulfhart’s campaign, these hunters manifest themselves in little quest chains, all told from the perspective of Wulfhart’s diary entries, by far the best feature in the DLC for me. Each hero’s quest relates primarily to a different area or faction, whether that’s Van Hel’s war against the Vampire Coast, or Kalara’s vendetta against a gigantic monster. This allows them to effectively split your campaign expansion into smaller narrative chapters — a very cool piece of roleplay. What’s even cooler is that the hunters are real Warhammer Fantasy characters for which the DLC expands on - seriously go look them up! These quest chains do so much in adding mystery to the storied continent of Lustria, where previously it had been somewhat bland. By comparison, Nakai’s faction, the Spirit of the Jungle, engage with these hunters in a far less interesting way, basically finding them on the map and slamming them into bloody ruin with his crocodile fists. Nakai’s campaign is based more around starting small and building up, all the while under the unsuspecting noses of the colonists. Nakai has a little army and a somewhat bad economy, but he can gain powerful abilities, plus you’d be amazed what a small band of angry giant crocodiles can accomplish when they put their minds to it. Nakai is, pardon the expression, a beast on the battlefield — I saw him rack up 40 kills in maybe 15 seconds. If you consider that Nakai also now has Razordons (a spiky Salamander variant) legendary Croxigors (power-fist crocodiles) and the Dread Saurian (a monster which brings the phrase, “There’s always a bigger dinosaur” to mind), you’ll see they have easily enough to turn the tide. Facing off at the heart of this lord-pack are the Huntsmarshal, Markus Wulfhart, and crocodilian beastie-boy, Nakai the Wanderer. Essentially Markus looks to further the Empires’ interests in Lustria, garnering glory, looting those lizard trinkets, and just generally sticking an arrow into any dinosaur that crosses his path. But Nakai, the ancient Lizardmen guardian, doesn’t take too kindly to these invaders plundering their temple cities, so sets about driving these warm-bloods back into the ocean. Ransacking Lustria The Huntsmarshal’s Expedition also has a rocky start, made worse by the interplay between the Imperial Supply and Hostility mechanics. Early on in the game you don’t have access to many units, or the buildings to recruit them, instead relying on reinforcements in the form of Imperial Supplies, which arrive periodically every so-many turns. Each time you occupy or sack a settlement belonging to a Lustrian faction, Hostility will increase, giving you debuffs, but so too will the number of turns until those precious supplies arrive. When hostility reaches full, supplies will arrive immediately, but an army of unbreakable Lizardmen will also spawn for a little payback. It’s a great mechanic which essentially gates your expansion, as every five settlements you take, you’ve got to beat a retreat and defend yourself. Eventually another big scary Lizard will show up, but I won’t spoil that. This is all to gain prestige, which will unlock better supplies and the buildings you need to construct units — when it reaches maximum, the final battle will be upon you. On top of the war wagons, the archers, the huntsmen (better archers) and the new lord type, Huntsmaster General, there’s a hell of a lot to love in this campaign. Nakai’s campaign, while fun, is arguably less strong — The Spirit of the Jungle is a horde faction who can gift settlements to his vassal, The Defenders of the Great Plan, dedicating them to a Lizardmen god to gain army abilities or buffs to unit types. But this is essentially where the interest ends — Nakai’s campaign focuses more around the enjoyment of watching dinosaurs go to town on a bunch of tiny humans, an objective it accomplishes admirably. At its heart The Hunter and the Beast is about creating that feeling so many of us play the Empire for — of holding the line and defeating some of the most terrifying monsters this world has to throw at you. Though from the opposite side of the scale it is also about inhabiting those same monsters and smashing your foes into dust. This head-to-head pack is a vast improvement over The Prophet and the Warlock, because this DLC actually gives the lords something tangible to fight over, as well as a climactic final battle to work towards. It also revives stories from Warhammer Fantasy lore, and reinvents a game one race for game two, which effectively makes possible a whole host of future cross-game content packs.
