The SNP would demand the power for another independence vote as the price for supporting Labour in a hung parliament. Senior figures in the SNP think they could hold the balance of power in the next parliament. They have told the BBC the cost of their support would be devolving the power to hold another referendum to Holyrood. This is the most explicit statement yet of their strategy. Senior SNP figures told the BBC they will make the demand for a referendum a central part of their general election campaign. Labour and Lib Dems take seats from Tories Scottish government loses indyref2 court case Labour have repeatedly said they would not do a deal with the SNP on another referendum. The party has said it believes it can win a majority on its own - based on Thursday's local election results. But the SNP leadership is planning to increase its calls for another referendum as the cost of support if Labour need it. Shift in strategy It's not clear what this would mean in practice however - it's unlikely the SNP would be prepared to bring down Labour and allow the Conservatives into power. A Labour source dismissed the prospect saying: "There is going to be a majority Labour Government". The SNP are also facing difficulties of their own. The party has the cloud of a police investigation into its finances hanging over it. It is racing to meet a deadline to provide audited accounts. If it misses that deadline, it could lose out on around £1.2m of public money. As Chris Mason and I wrote last week, the party appears to be shifting to a longer term strategy on independence. But senior figures have told the BBC the one "shortcut" would be in a hung parliament. They would go further than asking for a Section 30 order - giving Holyrood temporary power as happened in 2014. Instead, they would call for the power to be devolved permanently - giving Holyrood control over when another referendum happens. That means a referendum would not necessarily be immediate. The SNP leadership also wants to call for other powers of employment and energy policy. Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said: "The SNP would ensure the power to determine Scotland's future is transferred to Edinburgh, that the cost of living crisis becomes the main priority of Westminster, and that relations with Europe are rebuilt and renewed." A Labour spokesman said: "Keir Starmer has repeatedly said no deals with the SNP going into an election, or coming out of the election. We're campaigning for a majority Labour government." A Conservative source said: "Keir Starmer has already broken every pledge he's ever made so any claims he makes ruling this out can safely be dismissed." link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65503990

Argentina forward Lionel Messi has signed for American MLS side Inter Miami on a deal that runs until 2025. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, 36, left French champions Paris St-Germain at the end of the 2022-23 season. "I'm very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the United States," said Messi, who led his country as they won the World Cup in Qatar last year. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said the signing was a "dream come true". Messi, who has not previously played for a club side outside Europe, added: "This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project. "The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set and I'm very eager to start helping here in my new home." On securing the services of a player expected to win another Ballon d'Or this year, Beckham said: "10 years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamed of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city. "[I wanted] players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy, to help grow football in the USA and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much. "Today that dream came true. I couldn't be prouder that a player of Leo's calibre is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community. "The next phase of our adventure starts her, and I can't wait to see Leo take to the pitch." Messi will be available to play for Miami against LIGA MX side Cruz Azul on 21 July in their opening match of Leagues Cup. "We are overjoyed that the greatest player in the world chose Inter Miami and Major League Soccer, and his decision is a testament to the momentum and energy behind our league and our sport in North America," said MLS commissioner Don Garber. "We have no doubt that Lionel will show the world that MLS can be a league of choice for the best players in the game. We look forward to seeing his debut for Inter Miami in our Leagues Cup tournament later this month." Messi won the last of his seven Ballon d'Or awards for the world's best player in 2021 and could win it again later this year after leading Argentina to World Cup success in Qatar in 2022. He scored 32 goals in 75 games for PSG and ended last season with 16 goals and 16 assists in Ligue 1. Messi joined the French side in 2021 after spending 21 years with Barcelona. Messi is Barca's record scorer with 672 goals and won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and seven Spanish Cups. Link : https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66213439

Police believe two emperor tamarin monkeys - shown here in a file photo - were taken By Imogen James BBC News Two monkeys taken from Dallas Zoo in Texas have been found in an abandoned home, as police continue to search for a person of interest in the case. The incident is the latest in a series of suspicious events at the zoo, including the death of a vulture. Police were alerted on Monday that two emperor tamarin monkeys were missing. Zoo staff believe they were taken because this breed would typically stay close to home - and the monkeys were not located on zoo grounds. Dallas police said on Tuesday that they had found the monkeys in a closet of an abandoned home in Lancaster, about 16 miles (26km) from Dallas, and that they had been returned to the zoo.The police searched the home after receiving a tip, according to a statement seen by the BBC. "We are thrilled beyond belief to share that our two emperor tamarin monkeys have been found," the zoo said in a statement. Police "called our team to come secure and transport the tamarins back to the Zoo," they continued, adding that veterinarians would inspect the animals on Tuesday evening. The discovery came after Dallas police earlier on Tuesday asked the public for help identifying a man seen by cameras wandering around the zoo before the animals went missing. Police said they believed someone had cut an opening in the habitat and taken the two primates. A string of suspicious incidents began at the zoo earlier this month when a young clouded leopard escaped from its exhibit through a cut-out hole. It was later found safely. Workers also found deliberate cuts on an enclosure housing langur monkeys - though none got out. Last week, an endangered vulture was found dead in its enclosure with an "unusual wound". The bird was one of only 6,500 on the planet and its death was deemed "very suspicious". Zoo staff said losing the 35-year-old lappet-faced vulture called Pin was devastating, adding he would be "missed dearly by everyone". No arrests have been made in any of the investigations, and Dallas police have refused to say if the incidents are linked. Since the suspicious occurrences began, the zoo has added extra cameras and increased its security patrols at night. Ed Hansen, chief executive of the American Association of Zoo Keepers, said it appeared that someone "really has an issue with the Dallas Zoo", but that the zoo had an "excellent" reputation in the industry. Emperor tamarin monkeys are distinctive for their long white whiskers that resemble moustaches. It is believed they were named after Germany's last emperor, Wilhelm II, who also had a moustache. The zoo sits on 106 acres (43 hectares), housing more than 2,000 animals, and is the oldest and largest zoo in Texas. It made headlines in 2004 when a 300lb (136kg) gorilla escaped from its enclosure, injuring four people before being shot to death. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64465580

Written by Debra Kamin The homes of Hollywood’s rich and famous have long been enclosed by walls of sky-high ficus, designed to shield their wealthy occupants from paparazzi and peeping Toms. Robert Frost may have thought good fences make good neighbors, but in Los Angeles, those fences are planted rather than built. “Hedges are a constant in every design I do,” said Brent Green, a veteran landscaper in Los Angeles whose clients include Regina King, Regina Hall, and Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. “You guys are all concrete in Manhattan, and for privacy, you have doormen,” he said to a reporter. “But here in Los Angeles, you can live near a freeway, a heavily trafficked street or be right on top of your neighbor, and you’ll still have a backyard. Hedges create privacy and make that a usable space.” Los Angeles is a horizontal city, a sprawling quilt of stitched-together neighborhoods bounded by crags and ocean. Its real estate is overwhelmingly low-slung, single-family and short on breathing room between properties. In a city where the bedrooms and bathrooms of one house are often within sight of the house next door, a high hedge wall — which increases privacy while reducing both noise and air pollution — has become the ultimate status symbol. In neighborhoods such as Beverly Hills and Bel Air, entire blocks are made up of individually cordoned-off homes — residential jewel boxes tucked behind elaborate leafy curtains; the real estate equivalent of the velvet rope. Behind them, the city’s elite landscapers have crafted Alice in Wonderland-like gardens. The typical starting price for their elaborate handiwork, including plants and labor, is $1 million. “We entertain quite often. We have small gatherings, dinners with 60 to 100 people, and even with up to 260 people. And people always appreciate the gardens,” said Andrea Alberini, whose husband, Carlos, is CEO of Guess. The couple bought their 10,000-square-foot home, on nearly an acre of land in Beverly Hills, for $16.5 million in 2014. The seller was Bruce Willis. But they didn’t move in immediately — they spent more than two years remodeling both the interiors and exteriors. They brought in celebrity landscape artist Scott Shrader, whose other clients include Patrick Dempsey, Ellen DeGeneres, Lionel Richie and Cher. He spoke to the Alberinis about their hometown, Olivos, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, and they told him how olive trees remind them of home. His vision was to first wrap the home, which sits on a busy stretch of Benedict Canyon Drive, in a double layer of sound-insulating hedge walls. And then inside, he would create a dreamscape inspired by Mendoza, in Argentine wine country. At least 43 people, including 12 children, have been injured after a missile struck the carpark of a residential building in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, local officials say. What is believed to be a Russian Iskander missile landed in the town of Pervomaisky at about 13:30 local time. Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said there were only residential buildings in the area. A one-year-old and a 10-month-old were reportedly among the injured. Mr Kostin said targeting the residential buildings amounted to another war crime from Russia. Oleg Sinegubov, the Kharkiv regional governor posted several pictures of the damaged building to Telegram. They showed smashed windows, dark smoke clouds and an overturned car. "At least half of the neighbourhood is in an uninhabitable state," Anton Orekhov, the chairman of Pervomaiskyi was quoted as saying by local media. Russia has not immediately commented on the incident, but has previously denied targeting civilians. Pervomaisky is about 90km (50 miles) south of the major city of Kharkiv and relatively far from the current fighting hotspots, which are predominantly in the Donbas region. But the north-eastern Kharkiv region was the focus of heavy fighting in the early days of Moscow's full-scale invasion last year, with Ukrainian forces fighting back Russian attempts to advance further into the country. Earlier on Tuesday, Russia said it had brought down five Ukrainian drones aimed at Moscow and its surrounding region, but reported no casualties or damage. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66102096

Marvel Snap has been one of the most famous and followed games since its release. The game always comes up with tons of new features that actually attract the crowd but sometimes few changes or updates make some features a bit questionable among fans and thus we can witness a few debatable talks between the fans themselves. So, let us know about some of the recent update leaks and opinions that are witnessed over social media from the Marvel Snap fans themselves. Spider-Man 2099 is reportedly going to be a broken cardAs we know, in June, the new season is going to be based on the world of Spider-Man. The season is said to be more focused upon the characters of Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse which is the newest and upcoming Spider-Man movie on 2nd June. In this season, a new card of Spider-Man 2099 is going to be released with a cost and power ratio of 4/5 is now buffed and is set to be released with a cost and power ratio of 4/6. The card has a very great ability, that is when it moves to a location for the first time, it destroys an enemy card. Fans are coming up with mixed opinions and most of the opinions are mostly inclined towards a future prediction. By knowing about the power, ability, and cost of the card, anyone can figure out how powerful this card is going to be. Based on this, fans have already started predicting that within 3 months of release, this card is going to be nerfed as it will rule the game. Players added by saying that the card will be nerfed and lastly will hold a cost and power of 4/4 or 4/3. Mane fans were also found commenting on this card as “Broken” and “Overpowered with this cost and power”. Fans have mixed opinions over the Wave Nerf Marvel Snap came up with a patch note update on 16th May 2023 where they announced the nerfing of the card of Wave from their end. Previously the card was considered as one of the strongest 3 cost cards, but after the nerfing fans were found coming up with many mixed opinions. Somewhere found stating that the Nerf was not required and the main motto of the card is being demolished. Some fans were also found stating that this is a good decision as other cards got hampered. Later many fans also came up with future thoughts such as one fan stating that Wave had to go nerf as it restricted future design space. But also another leak came up that, if the card of Wave goes too much suppressive then the officials might bring a change in the plan again. This speculation came in comparison with the card of Sandman, as Sandman serves the same purpose but with 2 more energy. As Wave’s ability helps players to get cards for 4 till the next turn after the player has used the card, it helps them to use it as a destructive tool at such an early stage of the game and helps them out to win. Final Thoughts Marvel Snap has come up with such leaks and speculations before as well. Also, fans have come up with debatable arguments on some previous updates, nerfing, and so on. Marvel Snap always tries to keep up with the words of their players and makes the gameplay experience evenly good without any hurdle for other cards. So, what are your opinions on both above-mentioned updates which are going on throughout Twitter, let us know in the comment section. https://gamingonphone.com/news/marvel-snap-leaks-reveal-the-introduction-of-spider-man-2099-in-its-next-update/

When my colleague and fellow Destiny 2 veteran Phil Savage wrote about burnout earlier this week, I almost nodded my head clean off. Phil pointed out that the Destiny 2 community tends to be at its most irascible during the final season of each year, when the sameyness of the grind really bites. But he also noted that this time around people really do seem to be over the current model, which tends to lack big secrets and surprises, and that the problem is likely to get worse before it gets better. Honestly, the mood music around Destiny 2 has become increasingly grumpy over the course of 2022 as the glow from The Witch Queen's excellent campaign faded. Aside from the staleness of doing a near-identical power climb every three months, the core playlists are also incredibly stale. PvP in particular seems to be a constant tyre fire of complaints about lack of maps, the perceived injustices of SBMM, and a detested 'aerial effectiveness' system that Bungie remains mind-bogglingly committed to making work. As much as I still love the game, and let the record state I really do, it's clear from the recent rough player numbers that many are voting with their mouse fingers and staying away. Enter stage left, Joe Blackburn, Destiny 2 game director, who took to Twitter this afternoon to deliver a thread of five messages that can be summarised as: We've heard, we don't disagree, we're working on changes, but they're going to take a while before you feel them.Probably the most important thing to note is that the seasonal content that's being worked on right now, and can therefore incorporate current player sentiment, won't hit until early summer 2023. That delay is just the nature of making these sorts of games, and also probably why Blackburn didn't opt to write one of his voluminous 'state of the game' blog posts. Bungie knows what it needs to do, the issue is actually getting it done. Blackburn closed in collegial fashion, saying: "I wanted to make sure everyone knows that your words are not falling on deaf ears." Whilst the phrase 'we're listening' has long since reached meme status among Bungie's detractors, I've interviewed Blackburn and he's always come across as incredibly smart and sincere, so my immediate reaction is that the burnout issue is being taken seriously. Live service games are supertankers and it's incredibly hard to change their direction mid-voyage. Those looking for the best of what Destiny 2 has to offer right now should direct themselves to the new dungeon, which drops this Friday at reset. Designed for three-player teams, dungeons tend to be some of the coolest challenges in the game. The new one is called Spire of the Watcher and is rumoured to have something of a western theme. Yee, and also, haw. https://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2-game-director-responds-to-complaints-about-player-burnout/

Tory London mayoral hopeful Daniel Korski has pulled out of the contest, after being accused of groping by novelist and TV producer Daisy Goodwin. Mr Korski said he "categorically" denied the allegation against him. But he said he was withdrawing from the race because the pressure on his family and the "inability to get a hearing" for his message "makes it impossible for my campaign to carry on". Ms Goodwin said he groped her during a meeting at 10 Downing Street in 2013. She wrote about the alleged incident in 2017 but did not name Mr Korski until Monday, saying she hoped this would encourage other women to come forward. Reacting to Mr Korski quitting the contest, Ms Goodwin said: "I am glad he has withdrawn - it shows that women can speak out against misbehaviour in the workplace and be believed. "If I was in the ethics department of the Cabinet Office, I would be wondering why such behaviour went unchecked in Downing Street." Daisy Goodwin makes formal groping complaint In a statement Mr Korski said: "I categorically deny the allegation against me. "Nothing was ever put to me formally 10 years ago. Nor seven years ago when the allegation was alluded to. "No investigation has ever taken place. I have been clear I would welcome and constructively participate in any investigation." However, he said he was withdrawing from the contest "with a heavy heart", adding: "The news agenda is becoming a distraction from the race and the Conservative Party." Mr Korski, 46, was one of three candidates shortlisted by the Conservative Party ahead of next year's election, when Labour's Sadiq Khan will be running for a third term as mayor. In an article in the Times on Monday, Ms Goodwin said Mr Korski - then a special adviser at 10 Downing Street - had put his hand on her breast. Ms Goodwin, 61, said that since the article's publication other women had contacted her with "interesting stories", but added she could not provide details for legal reasons. She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme she had not previously reported the incident because of attitudes at the time. However, Ms Goodwin, who was behind the successful ITV drama Victoria, said she made a formal complaint to the Cabinet Office on Tuesday. In an interview with TalkTV on Tuesday, Mr Korski was asked about the possibility of further allegations, replying: "To the best of my knowledge, absolutely, I don't expect anybody to come out and say anything." His campaign was coming under increasing pressure after several of his backers, including Children and Families Minister Claire Coutinho, paused their support. Downing Street had described the allegation as "very serious". It leaves London Assembly member Susan Hall and barrister Moz Hossain as the two remaining contenders to be the Conservative mayoral candidate. The Conservatives said the selection process would continue with these two contenders. Ms Hall said Mr Korski had "fought a hard campaign with lots of fresh ideas" but the allegation against him was "serious" and it was right this was investigated. line Who is Daniel Korski? Born in Denmark and the son of Polish emigres, Mr Korski was deputy head of the Number 10 policy unit between 2013 and 2016. A campaigner to stay in the EU, he left Number 10 when David Cameron did after the Brexit referendum. He has previously worked for a think tank and as a journalist. He is a technology entrepreneur, having set up his own business providing support for companies seeking contracts in the public sector. The central message of his campaign to be the Conservatives' mayoral candidate was enabling people to achieve the "London dream". His key offer was the pledge to provide new solutions to old problems, such as pay-per-mile road-pricing to tackle congestion and air pollution in the capital. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-66045734

Fish are constantly surrounded by water, but do they get thirsty? And how would they even drink? To answer these question, it's crucial to understand how water — a solvent — interacts with other substances like salt, which is a solute, across a cell membrane. Through a process called osmosis, water flows across a membrane from areas with low concentrations of solutes to areas with high concentrations of solutes until the cell can reach some sort of equilibrium with its external environment. How much water a fish consumes really depends on how much salt is in its surrounding habitat. While fish do drink some water — salty or fresh, depending on their surroundings — through their mouths, they mostly absorb it through their skin and gills via osmosis. "You've got to think of a fish as sort of a leaky boat in the water," Tim Grabowski, a marine biologist at the University of Hawaii, told Live Science. "You constantly have a movement of either water or the salts that are in the water between the fish's body and the external environment." Let's start with how fish in the ocean stay hydrated. Seawater has roughly 4.7 ounces of dissolved salt per gallon (35 grams per liter), while most fish blood has roughly 1.2 ounces of salt per gallon (9 grams per liter). This imbalance is "going to constantly cause the fish to lose water to the external environment and to be sort of invaded by salt into its cells and inside of its body," Grabowski said. "A saltwater fish is always thirsty. It's drinking all the time." These fish need a way to retain the water they are drinking from the ocean but get rid of the salt. To do this, fish have specialized cells in their gills called chloride cells, which essentially act as tiny pumps that actively push salt out of their bodies. To maintain as much water as they can, marine fish rarely pee, and when they do, their urine is exceptionally salty. Freshwater fish face the exact opposite challenge as marine fish when it comes to water, according to Melanie Stiassny, a curator in the Ichthyology Department at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. "If you're a freshwater fish, you have a problem because water is constantly being pumped into you," Stiassny told Live Science. Too much water can be a bad thing because it can dilute the body's salt content, which is crucial for regulating blood pressure and supporting muscle function. Freshwater fish spend all their time trying to keep water out of their bodies and never drink it — at least on purpose. "[Freshwater fish] might take in water incidentally when it feeds and stuff like that, but it's never drinking any water," Grabowski said. To combat this constant barrage of liquid, "it's peeing continuously," he added. But no need to fret about swimming in a bunch of fish pee in lakes or rivers; the urine is mostly just water, Grabowski said. Similar to ocean fish, freshwater fish also have chloride cells, but their pumps work by pulling salt into their bodies rather than out of them. However, operating these pumps can take a lot of effort. "[Water] is passively coming in, but it has to be energetically removed," Stiassny said. "There is a cost to that, particularly for the saltwater fish which really has to pump out all of that salt that it's brought into its system by having to drink lots of water." There are some fish that follow an entirely different rulebook for drinking water. For example, sharks maintain high concentrations of urea — a salty byproduct of ammonia — in their body. "[Sharks] stop that passive incoming of water because they've balanced it with the urea and their blood — so they're basically as salty as saltwater," Stiassny said. When they do take in seawater, sharks expel the excess salt through chloride cells at a gland in their rectum. No matter what the mechanism, though, the key to staying hydrated for all fish is finding the perfect salty balance. link: https://www.livescience.com/animals/fish/do-fish-get-thirsty

There comes a point in life when you should start to question the big things – to probe accepted ideas around religion, politics, and the best way to cook pasta. Forget what you learned at your mother’s knee, what it says on the packet, or what you once heard a celebrity chef say on Saturday Kitchen … or rather, check it for accuracy. As the saying goes, there’s more than one way to crack an egg … but I maintain the most efficient is to tap it against a flat surface and then pull it apart over a bowl. Here are a few other culinary facts that might come as a surprise. 1. Cook pasta in water ‘as salty as the sea’ I admit this notion does have a certain romance – it’s nice to think you’re tasting the Adriatic while eating spaghetti alle vongole in Enfield – but if you’ve ever been smacked in the face by a wave you’ll know that level of saltiness is far too much for human consumption. And while it’s true that most of the salt will disappear down the plughole when you drain the pasta, if you try cooking it at the same level of salinity as the Med, with 38g salt per litre of water, you’ll find it’s still completely unpalatable. To be fair, those who repeat the claim, like Katie and Giancarlo Caldesi in their book The Long & the Short of Pasta, or even the great food writer Anna del Conte, are usually mistaken about the saltiness of the sea, rather than how to cook pasta, because the Caldesis go on to recommend a mere 5g of salt per litre. Certainly you do need some salt – pasta cooked without it will be bland and disappointing, however delicious the accompanying sauce – but how much depends on your palate. Del Conte suggests 10g per litre, or at least a teaspoon-worth “if you want a pasta worth eating”, a formula also approved by the Michelin-starred chef Giorgio Locatelli. According to Serious Eats culinary director Daniel Gritzer, 2% is, for him, “the top end of what’s tolerable, tasting very well seasoned but also noticeably salty”. There’s also debate around whether pasta is best cooked in a very large pan of water, as is traditional, or whether you can save power by using a smaller pot, and less water. I won’t delve into it here, but look up J Kenji López-Alt’s take on the subject on the aforementioned Serious Eats website. link: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jun/28/10-food-rules-you-should-ignore-felicity-cloake

A Palestinian child walks near cars burnt near Hawara By Tom Bateman BBC News, Hawara Homes in Hawara are charred black alongside burned-out cars cloaked in a layer of ash. The air tastes acrid as people speak of the night their town burned. Residents told the BBC a mob had gone on an hours-long rampage armed with iron bars and rocks before torching buildings, cars and trees. On Sunday the Palestinian town was subjected to one of the worst cases of mass Israeli settler violence in years, hours after two settlers were shot dead by a Palestinian gunman. The settlers attacked our house, they smashed the windows and burned my nephew's cars and trucks. They tried to break into my car showroom and set it on fire," said Abdel Nasser al-Junaidi, speaking outside his home. He described how he had rushed his children up to the rooftop to try to keep them safe. The army did nothing to protect us. It supported the settlers and protected them. The shooting was from both settlers and soldiers. We were terrified. What happened was a horrific and barbaric attack," said Mr al-Junaidi. The scale of the damage becomes clear when you keep walking the length of this town that sits astride Route 60 - the main highway running north-south through the occupied West Bank. A mob torched buildings, cars and trees Home after home is wrecked, shop-fronts are torched as are dozens of cars- including many in a used car lot that went up in flames. The Palestinian health ministry says 37-year-old Sameh Aqtash died after being shot in the stomach during an attack by settlers in Zaatara on Sunday night. Dozens more were wounded. One family had to be rescued by paramedics after becoming trapped in their house when settlers laid burning tyres outside their front door, blocking the route out. Israeli-American killed in West Bank amid unrest Several hundred metres away from the highway, an extended family tried to take refuge as their home came under attack. "My wife, my brother's wife, and our young children were in the house, they were screaming, and the children were crying, and they were crying out for protection from the settlers' oppression, and we could not reach them," said Oday al-Domadi, speaking to the BBC in the remains of his burned-out lounge. He rushed home from his work in Nablus after hearing that settlers were planning a march of "revenge" after the killing earlier of two Israeli settlers in the town. Hillel and Yagel Yaniv lived in the settlement of Har Bracha, which is 1.9km (1.2 miles) south of Nablus. "There were about 30 masked settlers carrying pistols who were destroying the house… The moment we entered the house, they discovered us, threw stones at us and broke my brother's shoulder. "I shouted at the soldiers to protect the children and prevent the settlers from frightening them, but the soldiers responded by shooting at me and shouting at me to stay at home," said Mr al-Domadi, who eventually managed to ensure his children were safely in another part of the building. "The worst thing is what the kids experienced - the terror and the panic they felt. Afterwards, they were trembling in fear and sheltering in my lap, begging me to stay beside them." The Israeli army has defended its handling of the violence but a military official said, "The wisdom of the deployment could be challenged." Israeli soldiers carry the coffin during the funeral of two Israeli brothers, Hillel and Yagel Yaniv Human rights groups have long blamed violence against Palestinian civilians on an atmosphere of impunity surrounding settler violence in the occupied West Bank, particularly in some of the most ideological settlements in the area around Hawara and Nablus. They say this has been now amplified with the powerful pro-settler, far-right component of Israel's new government. Israel's police routinely says it investigates such cases but campaigners say these are often a whitewash. Alongside waves of Israeli military search and arrest raids in Palestinian cities, and growing numbers of Palestinian armed attacks against Israelis, there is growing concern about a slide into uncontrollable violence. It increasingly feels like a tipping point is being reached, particularly amid increasing signs that the Palestinian Authority is unable to regain a grip on its limited security control of key cities, despite American-led attempts to help it do so. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64757990

Nearly 40% of prison officers did not turn up for work at Wandsworth prison on the day terror suspect Daniel Khalife escaped, it has been revealed. The 21-year-old former soldier has been charged with escaping in a van on 6 September. On that day, 80 prison officers did not turn up for their shift - 39% of all staff expected on duty - Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures show. The government said staffing levels were "above the minimum" level needed. ADVERTISEMENT But Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Labour MP for Wandsworth, said the government "must get a grip" on staffing at the prison. Daniel Khalife charged over prison escape Wandsworth prison life: Decay, drugs and drudgery Dr Allin-Khan, who uncovered the staffing figures through a question in Parliament, said: "It is deeply concerning that on the day Khalife escaped, just 60% of prison officers turned up for duty. "With such low staff numbers, mistakes were bound to happen." Prisons could not safely run education or work programmes with staff shortages, Dr Allin-Khan told the BBC. There was "no reason for Daniel Khalife to be in the kitchen" on the morning he escaped, she added. Minimum staffing The MoJ said an initial investigation into Mr Khalife's escape had not found the staffing level to be a contributing factor. Speaking on 10 September, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk said preliminary inquiries had determined that correct security protocols and staffing levels were in place at the time. Prisons minister Damian Hinds said: "Overall staffing levels were above the minimum staffing level required by the prison's Regime Management Plan to deliver a safe and decent regime. "All staff in both the kitchen and the gatehouse were on duty on 6 September." Minimum staffing levels are set locally - the BBC has not yet been able to confirm what the minimum levels are at Wandsworth prison. Mr Hinds also said the government had taken steps to increase the overall prison workforce, adding that the 12 months to June 2023 had seen an increase of more than 700 full-time equivalent officers. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said "in general, of course, people should turn up to work wherever they work", but the full facts needed to be established to prevent this from happening again. The last formal inspection of Wandsworth, published last year, found staffing shortfalls "were preventing the prison from running a decent and predictable regime". In the 12 months to March 2023, Wandsworth lost an average of 20 working days per worker to sickness absence - the sixth highest of the 106 prisons in England and Wales that submitted data. The figure was also 54% higher than the average (13 days) of all the prisons that submitted data and substantially higher than the UK average, which was 6 days in 2022. Andrea Albutt, president of the Prison Governors Association, told the BBC's World at One that prisons were "a very stressful environment" leading to high levels of staff sickness. "In some of our prisons it does border on being quite dangerous," she added. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-66819565
