  4. A dozen APUs are planned for this summer A Chinese-language website has posted what it claims is a legitimate roadmap of AMD's forthcoming "Godavari" APUs. You can think of Godavari as a Kaveri refresh, as the new parts will feature the same Steamroller architecture for both the CPU and GPU portions. If the leaked roadmap proves accurate, AMD is planning to release a dozen Godavari APUs this summer, culminating in the A10-8850K. That unlocked part will feature four cores (and a four thread design) clocked at 3.7GHz base and 4.1GHz boost. It will also have a Radeon R7 graphics core based on AMD's Sea Islands GCN architecture with 512 streaming scores and 856Mhz clockspeed. Other bits include 4MB of L2 cache, DDR3 memory support up to 2,133MHz, and a 95W TDP. According to wccftech, pricing will close to the current generation A10-7850K APU at about $149. Most of the 12 new chips will be branded as AMD's A-8000 series and will remain compatible with current boards based on the FM2+ platform via BIOS updates. It's not yet known what internal optimizations AMD might be making with Godavari, though from the roadmap, the new chips will feature faster clockspeeds without bumping up TDPs. Performance should improve anywhere from 5 percent to 15 percent. Two of the new chips will be branded as Athlon parts. They include the Athlon X4 870K, a quad-core part clocked at 3.5GHz base and 3.7GHz boost with 4MB of L2 cache and a 95W TDP, and the Athlon X4 850K, also a quad-core chip but clocked at 2.9GHz base and 3.2GHz boost and with a 65W TDP.

  5. Join the mile high VR club Imagine that you're 40,000 feet above the ground, but instead of peering out a small oval window and looking at clouds (or darkness), you turn your head and see a dingo wandering about. Don't worry, it's not on the plane's wing feasting on wires and electronics, he's in your Gear VR headset. This is what Australian airline Qantas is working towards. Along with Samsung, Qantas has launched a new trial entertainment service that gives fliers a Gear VR headset during their flight. At the outset, the initiative is being tested in Sydney and Melbourne International First Lounges, along with first class cabins on select A380 services. The trial will last for three months, after which Qantas will assess customer feedback, presumably so it can decide whether to expand the program or nix it. Qantas sees multiple possibilities here. From a marketing standpoint, the company can partner with third-parties to provide 3D content that might inspire tourism to a particular attraction or region. In fact, Qantas is already working with Tourism NT, which will provide a special 3D experience from Kakadu National Park. Whether or not they'll include dingoes in that experience isn't known, but there's plenty to experiment with there. For live-action content, Qantas has partnered with Jaunt -- it's not clear exactly what the company has in store, though it will include "destination footage." "From an inflight entertainment perspective, it’s an industry first," said Olivia Wirth, Qantas Group Executive, Brand, Marketing & Corporate Affairs. "Qantas is committed to being at the forefront of innovation to give our passengers the very best and latest in-flight experiences, like accessing the virtual worlds of their favorite Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of their seat 40,000 feet above the ground." The initiative will kick off in mid-February in the First Class Lounge in Sydney and Melbourne, and in mid-March on select A380 flights between Australia and Los Angeles for first class fliers.

  6. Graphics hardware supplier Nvidia announced at SIGGRAPH 2014 the immediate availability of their Nvidia Visual Computing Appliance (VCA). The Nvidia VCA is the company's network attached GPU accelerated rendering appliance designed to make ultra high performance rendering power available over a network to multiple client workstations. Under Nvidia's remote graphics architecture the VCA handles all of the rendering while the client is used to deliver the display and user input information over the network. This architecture has the advantage of co-locating the processing power and the graphics data so the time consuming task of copying very large files to a graphics workstation is eliminated. The Nvidia VCA features 8 Nvidia high-end GPUs each with: 12GB of RAM per GPU, 23,040 CUDA cores, 256 GB of system memory, an Intel Xeon E5 CPU running at 2.8 GHz, 2TB of SSD storage in a 4U enclosure with 2 1GigE, 2 10GigE, and 1 Infiniband network interfaces. The Linux CentOS-based VCA's computing power coupled with supported rendering software, either Nvidia IRay or Chaos Group V-Ray RT, promise to enhance graphics workflow, allowing designers to see photo-realistic imagery rendered in speeds up to real time. Nvidia is working closely with software vendors to allow the VCA to work with industry standard software such as Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya, McNeel Rhino, Dassault Systemes 3DXCite Bunkspeed and Sketchup.
  7. Tyan unveiled a cache appliance powered by Intel's Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor and leveraging Intel solid state drives as well as Intel Cache Acceleration Software. Along with this announcement last week, Tyan also announced the addition of two new small and medium business servers to its SMB server portfolio. At Computex 2014 in Taipei, Tyan announced the company's first Cache Appliance Solution based on a new server the company announced in February. The standard specs for the server are listed below but in the demo Tyan configured the server with (2) Intel Xeon Processor E5-2695 v2, 8 x 16GB DDR2 1600 GHz memory (128GB), and Intel's 400 GB SSD (DC P3700) running on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Intel Cache Acceleration version 2.5 software. Along with the appliance demo, Tyan also rolled out a large chunk of its existing catalog of server and motherboard products that it divides into four basic categories, High Performance Computing (HPC), Small and Medium Business (SMB), Embedded, and Cloud (mentioned above). High Performance Computing systems are generally needed for mission or business critical high-end database, online transaction processing (OLTP), big data, and other applications that require large amounts of computing power. To manage the higher end workloads HPC servers benefit from co-processors that can take on some of the heavy lifting that would slow down the average processor. Tyan's portfolio in this area includes: Tyan mentioned a few of its existing SMB and server room servers along with two new systems. Unfortunately, neither of the two new systems had much infor[CENSORED]on included and neither the systems nor the data sheets have appeared on Tyan's website at this time. Since many of the components are only slightly different from system to system in this group, the specifications are likely to be close to those of others in this group with some specialized modifications. For example, the TN65-B7053 was announced as a storage server due to its 16 HDD capacity. The GT56-B7066, however, appears to be a standard entry-level server. Tyan has been in business since 1989 and has offices in the U.S., China and Taiwan. The company focuses on Intel and AMD x86 servers, server motherboards, and a few motherboards designed for embedded products such as digital signage, healthcare applications, gaming and other applications. After reviewing Tyan's announcements and online material it was clear they are very excited about their products and take every opportunity to announce them. That can be a bit challenging when trying to separate what is new versus what existing product lines they are "showcasing" or "presenting." But, once the infor[CENSORED]on was sifted it was also clear that Tyan is staying current and focused on cloud and HPC (big data), two of the most significant trends affecting businesses, but have not forgotten the SMB's and entry level business needs in the process.
  8. New Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update details have emerged today as companies work behind the scenes to deliver these key Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to users around the world. In December, Samsung started pushing out its first Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Unsurprisingly, that update turned out to be the Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop update. Samsung historically has pushed out new software to its flagship devices first before moving on to older smartphones and tablets. And while many expected the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update to follow the Galaxy S5’s upgrade, Samsung’s Galaxy Android 5.0 roll out took a bit of a twist. Earlier this week, Samsung started rolling out the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update. That roll out came as a bit of a surprise given that the Galaxy Note 3 is no longer Samsung’s flagship smartphone. Samsung itself still hasn’t confirmed why the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update rolled out first though SamMobile’s editor Faryaab Sheikh claims that it’s because the company is still working on code. According to Sheikh, the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop release is delayed while Oculus tweaks code for the Gear VR. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is currently the only device that supports Samsung’s virtual reality accessory and it appears that its the reason why the Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 update beat the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 update to the punch. It’s still not clear when Samsung plans to push the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update or spread the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update to other carriers and variants though new infor[CENSORED]on suggests that we could see some movement during the month of February. French carrier SFR says that it plans to update the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 with Lollipop sometime next month. It does not outline any specific dates and the carrier’s release dates serve only as ETAs. SFR originally said that it planned to push the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update in December and the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update in January but those clearly didn’t work out for one reason or another. While this carrier is based in France, it helps to mold a potential timeline for Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 users in other parts of the world. It’s clear that Samsung is making progress but it’s also clear that the company is not rushing out either of these updates to users. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop update continues to roll out to the international version of the device, the SM-G900F, though it has yet to reach other variants including those in the United States. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 update still isn’t rolling out though it looks like we could see the update push out very soon. Several weeks ago, we noticed that Samsung had begun updating its Galaxy Note 4 manuals to reflect the unreleased Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update. Earlier this week, the company took it a step further and updated Galaxy Note 4 manuals for three variants including the SM-N910F, SM-N910C, SM-N910H. These seem to hint at the impending arrival of Lollipop. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop is only the second Lollipop push from Samsung. And while there are only a few Galaxy Android 5.0 Lollipop updates available at the moment, it’s clear that Samsung is aiming to make a strong push in the early part of the year, ahead of the Galaxy S6 laucnh date that’s expected in March. Samsung’s also scheduled to roll out Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to the Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy S5 mini, and the Samsung Galaxy S4 at some point down the road. Samsung could also opt to roll the update out to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a device that’s now more than two years old and one that continues to see Android 4.4 KitKat updates.
