  4. Editor’s Note: This is a review coupled with a video review. You can watch the video review above, or read a transcript of the video below. This is the Resident Evil 5 remaster for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Resident Evil 5 is the latest in the Resident Evil franchise to get an HD face lift for the modern consoles and to be honest…it’s probably the game that needed one the least. Yeah I know that Resident Evil 6 is panned by most people and it got an HD re-release as well, but that game had more going for it whether you enjoyed the game or not. Resident Evil 5 is a game that kind of fell into obscurity after it’s release, only being remember as the one that was “Exactly like Resident Evil 4” or “the one where Chris Redfield punched a boulder while fighting the main villain inside of a Volcano” … saying that out loud kind of shows just how stupid Resident Evil 5 is, doesn’t it? I’ll state up front that Resident Evil 5 isn’t a bad game, and in fact I think most of the hate this game gets is almost completely unwarranted. Though the game does have one significant flaw, it’s not scary…like at all. Resident Evil 5 was released at a time when the horror genre was practically on its deathbed. Silent Hill was being mutilated by western developers, and there weren’t any other developers who were really making an attempt at the genre yet either. That’s not to say that horror was completely dead, I mean Siren Blood Curse for the PlayStation 3 was pretty cool, but by and large Horror was dead. So Capcom had made the conscious description to just say “To hell with horror games, let’s make an action movie” and that’s exactly what we got. Yeah Resident Evil 5 fails at being a horror game, with not even a single scare and stupid story, but it sure as heck is a fun action game. The second and more founded reason for people disliking Resident Evil 5, was that the game is pretty much just a carbon copy of Resident Evil 4. This is definitely true, even down to the story beats. Think about it… in the beginning of each game, you’re fighting mostly normal villagers, then you fight some weirdos who look like they live in another time period, then you end it by fighting soldiers. It’s practically the same game. Now this is not to say that I think both games are even, but you’ll have to wait until next month for the Resident Evil 4 review. Resident Evil 5 is an action game that takes place in Africa. It follows the story of former S.T.A.R.S. member and current steroid user Chris Redfield, who’s on assignment with the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) to capture an international weapons dealer before he can sell a bio-organic weapon on the black market. When he arrives in Kjuju, Africa he meets up with his new partner, Sheva. As they make their way through the village, they discover that many of the villagers have been infected by the Las Plagues parasites from Resident Evil 4. As the story progresses, Chris discovers that his old partner and friend Jill Valentine, who he thought had been killed in a confrontation with Albert Wesker several years earlier, may still be alive. From there Chris and Sheva fight their way through villages, marshes, factories and tanker ships looking for Jill and attempting to stop Wesker from deploying a new bio-organic weapon called Uroboros, a parasitic tentacle-like monster that kills all in its path. The gameplay is pretty standard. The camera is over the shoulder and you have to stand still to shoot enemies. While this may seem like a problem at first, you’ll most likely get the hang of it about an hour in and will no longer need to worry. There are plenty of weapons that the player can buy or find around the map, as well as an ability to upgrade them to be powerful monster killers. One of the big draws to Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 is the fact that the player cannot directly purchase ammo and instead must rely on finding it as they go along. This will eventually stop being a problem as time goes on and completely stops being an issue after your first playthrough. It is fun to have your ammo limited and be forced to make sure every bullet counts. Graphically, the game runs at 60FPS and is also 1080p, however I’ll be honest and say that I couldn’t really notice. Despite Resident Evil 4 having somewhat of a grain filter and a bleak style to its colors, Resident Evil 5 made the “make every very bright brown and grey” direction. This choice makes the game look pretty bland, and even while running at 1080p, it’s hard to say that I’m here for the visuals. However, where the colors in the environments may be lacking, Resident Evil 5 does make up for it with the HD character models. Chris, Sheva, Jill, Wesker, and just about every single enemy in the game look great, not so good that they don’t look like they are in an HD port of a game from the previous generation, but still look pretty good. I think the only real flaw I ran into with this playthrough of Resident Evil 5 is that I felt Sheva’s AI got dumber. Now I know that the game has co-op for a reason, but since I’m sporadic when I play video games, I felt like the easiest way for me to finish the game was to lone wolf it. Holy crap did Sheva just annoy me. Whether it was standing behind me, shooting me in the back and wasting bullets, or her running in front of me to waste my ammo, Sheva’s AI was the real villain of Resident Evil 5 all along. Luckily, I was able to sort this problem out by giving her a sniper rifle so she’d stay behind me but still, the AI became such a problem there were entire chapters where I just refused to give her ammo at all, knowing that she’s waste it. Along with the single player campaign is mercenaries making a return as well, with the master roster of Resident Evil characters to choose from, you must fight enemies to rake up high scores before your time limit runs out. Each character has a different load out and abilities that can be used to lay waste to your foes, this is probably one of the best arcade-y game modes I’ve played in an action game like this. Lining up shots, building combos, desperately looking for hour glasses to extend your timeline, are a blast. The remaster of Resident Evil 5 comes with all the DLC previously released for the game, including the two DLC stories Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape. This even includes the Versus mode DLC that Capcom had the audacity to actually charge people for back when Resident Evil 5 first released. All of this comes with a price tag of $20 dollars both digitally and at retail. I honestly think this is awesome, and that doesn’t seem to be the end of it either as more HD remasters are being released for the PS4. It seems that they are releasing them with a low $20 price tag, which I think is a great thing. As I’ve already said several times in this review, Resident Evil 5 is definitely worth picking up if you want a dumb action game. However if you’re looking for a horror game, I’d say you’re much better off picking up either Resident Evil or Resident Evil 0 HD for $20 a piece. Let’s just hope that Capcom doesn’t screw up Resident “Totally not Silent Hills” Evil 7. From what I saw at E3 though, they seem to know what they are doing. Resident Evil 5 remastered was reviewed on the PlayStation 4 using a retail copy purchased by Niche Gamer. You can find additional information about Niche Gamer’s review/ethics policy here. The Verdict: 8 The Good: The gameplay is a ton of fun, taking the time to line up a shot just right to blow an enemy’s brains out with your handgun is always satisfying. You can play as Rebecca Chambers (my first video game waifu) in Mercenaries mode, this is a definite plus. The story is stupid and campy, and I can’t help by laugh every time Wesker is on screen. The character models look great, it’s nice to see Jill Valentine in that leather body suit in HD. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The game has a ton of replay value, whether it’s running through the game to grab all the emblems or just playing mercenaries, Resident Evil 5 gives you enough bang for your buck. Sweet $20 price tag for a physical copy of the game. The Bad: The competitive multiplayer is somewhat fun, but is still pretty bad. Sheva’s AI when playing singleplayer seems to be dumber than ever before, she just loves to stand in front of you when you’re shooting or run behind you and shoot you in the back. This doesn’t do damage but it does waste a heck of a lot of bullets. It’s not scary, Resident Evil 5 shows that for a while Capcom forgot how to do horror games right. The graphics are updated, but are barely noticable. This HD port was clearly a cash grab, but at least it’s a reasonable price.
  5. An unreleased AMD Radeon RX GPU has been spotted by the folks over at AMD's subreddit which appears to be much faster than NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, at least in VR benchmarks. The GPU which was spotted alongside an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor has no final name so it's likely that this is a prototype or an early engineering sample of what is presumed to be the big Navi GPU. An Unknown AMD Radeon RX GPU Shows Up & Beats The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti By 17% - Is This The Much Awaited Big Navi? The graphics card appeared on the OpenVR Benchmark database and surprisingly, it is tested with a setup that consisted of an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor which is part of the AMD Renoir line of mobility processors. Development and engineering samples do get tested with weird test setups so this is most likely the case here but the more surprising detail is the performance numbers that this card is able to deliver. Comparing in the CyubeVR benchmark at a resolution of 1512x1680 with an HTC Vive MV (90 Hz) HMD, the unreleased and unknown GPU manages to score 103.32 FPS while the fastest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, in the same leaderboard, only manages to deliver 88.10 FPS. This is a 17% increase in performance over NVIDIA's flagship graphics card for the desktop market. There are also entries for the RTX 2070 and GTX 1660 Ti but those benchmarks were done at a low resolution and nothing as demanding as what the RTX 2080 Ti and the AMD GPU were tested at. Now, this is a VR specific benchmark and we know that NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards have held a strong lead in VR titles over AMD's GPUs due to better optimizations in the software stack. But here we are looking at an entirely opposite scenario. The question is if this is indeed the big AMD Navi GPU based Radeon RX graphics card and if that is so, then could we see the same performance as the one showcased in this VR benchmark being carried over into traditional AAA titles. It would be really impressive if we get to see a Navi card that is up to 10-20% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti which would bring AMD back in the high-end enthusiast graphics segment with a bang. AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, did recently promise high-end Radeon RX Navi GPUs. Lisa also mentioned that AMD is heavily investing in ray tracing for their 2020 discrete GPU lineup which would feature the 2nd Generation RNDA architecture with hardware-level integration to support ray-tracing. The features to expect from 2nd Generation RDNA Navi GPUs would be: -Optimized 7nm+ process node -Enthusiast-grade desktop graphics card options -Hardware-Level Ray Tracing Support -A mix of GDDR6 and HBM2 graphics cards -More power-efficient than First-Gen Navi GPUs With that said, we are already aware of a recent rumor which pointed out that AMD's high-end Radeon RX Navi GPUs could be up to twice as fast as Navi 10, featuring a massive die size and GDDR6 memory. There are also reports that the next-gen Ampere GeForce GPUs could be as much as 50% faster and twice as efficient than the current Turing GPUs while offering significant increases in ray-tracing performance through hardware-level changes. Overall, this makes 2020 very interesting for high-end GPU launches and we can expect both NVIDIA and AMD to deliver some really high-end graphics cards this year. Expect announcements around Computex 2020.
  6. Open-source projects come in all different shapes and sizes. Some projects have just the project creator and maintainer, while other projects have thousands of developers. Additionally, some projects are independently managed and other projects are backed by large organizations. While open-source projects are meant to promote innovation, how each project goes about it will be different. “For one, smaller, independent projects don’t need sophisticated workflows or community management practices at the onset, and often, that premature optimization can stifle community growth. We think of project growth through a ‘community maturity model.’ Projects should often wait to establish formal or documented processes as they mature, and not before they need them,” said Ben Balter, senior product manager of community and safety at GitHub. Balter explained individual developers prototyping a new library don’t need a code of conduct or forms for bug reports, however once the first outside pull request has been established, the individual developer might want to start looking deeper at their documentation and start to formalize contribution and review processes to get ready for additional contributors. “That’s not necessarily true for organization-backed open-source projects that can either anticipate the success of a project or have teams dedicated to establishing cross-project practices,” he explained, “If you’re Facebook or Google and you’re starting an open-source project, it may make sense to include a standardized code of conduct or contributing guidelines for all your projects on day one to start things off on the right foot and set yourself up for success as the project grows.” Open-source projects also differ with the willingness to invest in community infrastructure, according to Balter. For instance, it may not make sense for an individual developer maintaining an open-source project to provide technical support, but an organization-backed project with lots of developers can easily add new channels and categories that foster community engagement. Additionally, Balter suggested corporate-backed open-source projects be an internal developer advocate. “If your corporate lawyers are asking each developer to print, sign, and fax an agreement before they can contribute, it’s unlikely your project will gain many contributors. Similarly, if you can showcase contributors in your corporate communication, appreciation goes a long way when it comes to open source,” he said.

  8. No food screams summer like watermelon! The sweet, juicy, vibrant fruit is the perfect treat on a hot summer day. As much as it is delicious, watermelon is definitely a nutritious addition to your diet. Watermelon contains thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, choline, lycopene and betaine. While it’s deliciously satisfying biting right into the juicy flesh alone, here are 5 new and healthy ways to enjoy the fruit of the summer! 1. Dip It: Watermelon Tomato Salsa Step up your traditional salsa’s game with a kick of watermelon. The sweetness of the watermelon fuses perfectly with the salty and spicy flavors of your typical tomato salsa, making for a perfect dip at your summer party. Ingredients: • 1 cup Watermelon, finely diced • 6 Roma Tomatoes, seeded and diced • ½ large White Onion, finely diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeds removed and minced • handful of fresh cilantro, leaves only • 1 lime, juiced • 1 Tbs extra virgin olive oil • Sea salt & pepper to taste Directions: 1. Add all ingredients into a large bowl and mix well. 2. Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving. 2. Spike It: Weekend Watermelon Cocktail Its BBQ season! What better way to treat yourself and guests than a spiked fresh watermelon slushy with lots of electrolytes for your time in the sunshien. It’ll be sure to be a party hit! Directions: 1. Add one cup of frozen watermelon cubes into a blender with 1/3 cup WTRMLN WTR, juice of half a lemon, 1 scoop of Vega Sport Electrolyte Hydrator and 1oz of vodka. 2. Blend until slushy. 3. Pour into a glass and garnish with a small bunch of fresh mint. 3. Grill It: Grilled Watermelon With Feta With grilling season at its peak, there’s no reason why watermelon can’t partake in the fun! Grilling watermelon cuts through some of the sweetness and offers a completely different flavor profile. Directions: 1. Cut the watermelon into 1- 11/2inch triangle wedges, leaving the rind on the base. 2. Place directly onto a medium-high heat grill for one-two minutes a side. 3. Remove from grill, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and honey. 4. Then top with crumbled feta and season with dried oregano, sea salt & pepper. 4. Freeze It: Frozen Watermelon Pops Swap out sugar! Watermelon alone has all the components necessary for a hydrating and refreshing ice pop. Chop the flesh of half a watermelon into large chunks. Add to blender and blend until smooth. Pour into Popsicle molds and freeze overnight. 5. Drink It: Watermelon Water On a hot day nothing quenches your thirst for something healthy quite like a cold-pressed juice. Now you can drink your watermelon with the newly launched WTRMLN WTR, which is rich in electrolytes – 6 times the amount of your regular sports brand drink- making it essential for summer hydration. What's more, WTRMLN WTR also has more potassium than a banana for hearth health and cramp prevention for your summer workouts. Enjoy!
  10. Mallacoota, Australia (CNN)--Chris Barton has a spot of blood on the collar of the white shirt he wears underneath his veterinarian's scrubs. The 70-year-old holds a .22 caliber rifle he's been forced to turn on critically injured and suffering kangaroos. He wants to cry. The Mallacoota golf course was a sanctuary for animals fleeing Australia's catastrophic bushfires, but it has become a killing field. A mob of kangaroos had gathered on the fairway, the last patch of green grass left after fire ripped through the eastern Victoria town on New Year's Eve, destroying close to 100 homes and thousands of hectares of native habitat. Over 4,000 locals and tourists had to be evacuated by sea after the fires cut the one road in and out of Mallacoota. The pristine national park that rings the town is home to native wildlife in an abundance unmatched throughout Australia. The fires burned fast, killing animals in their thousands -- and even those that made it to the comparative safety of the golf course were often horrifically injured. The four kangaroos Barton had to euthanize Thursday morning had third degree burns on their paws and faces that were already becoming septic. It was not going to be possible to treat their terrible injuries, forcing vets to put them down. "I have nightmares," Barton says, standing on the golf course. Behind him is a healthy couple -- a baby kangaroo feeding from its mother. Moments earlier he had used his rifle to euthanize another joey which was too badly burned to hop. The young male was tranquilized first and then put down swiftly and, the vet said, painlessly. "I've been a vet for 40 years, and I still don't get used to it. Wholesale slaughter is awful. It still brings tears to my eyes." The tears flow as Barton's wife and clinical partner at Vets for Compassion, Elaine Ong, interjects. "The animals suffer just as humans do," she says. "The community has been telling us that they've gone through so much trauma and they are further traumatized by seeing the animals suffer. So they are pleased we can come and help the animals." It's somber and difficult work, but leaving distressed animals to suffer through a slower and more painful death is even worse for the pair, who arrived from Melbourne on a trip sponsored by the NGO Animals Australia. Barton and Ong want to draw a line under the horror of the fires that burned almost all the land around Mallacoota, allowing others to begin the task of repo[CENSORED]ting wildlife and healing the land. Resilience and recovery Southeastern Australia is in the grip of a three-year drought, with significant rain not forecast until April. The conditions have exacerbated the fires burning across Australia for months, razing homes and wiping out entire towns. Across the country, more than 7.3 million hectares (17.9 million acres) of land has been burned -- much of it bushland, forests and national parks, home to the country's beloved and unique wildlife. Cutie Pie, an orphan koala, is being cared for by Mallcoota resident Sue Johns. His mother died in the fires. In New South Wales, the state neighboring Victoria, ecologists estimate that as many as half a billion animals may have been affected by the fires, with millions potentially killed. That figure includes birds, reptiles, and mammals, except bats. It also excludes insects and frogs -- meaning the true number is likely much higher. There are fears that some species may not recover, entering a terminal decline, such is the degree to which the fires have ravaged their po[CENSORED]tions. But amid all the bleak news, there is still room for hope that Australia's unique landscape and wildlife could bounce back. When the rains finally do come, much bushland could quickly recover -- particularly eucalypt forests where koalas live and feed. Beds of ash left by the fire provide nutrients for the seeds of Australian gum trees, which evolved to survive and even thrive from fires. Much of the vegetation that has burned this summer will naturally rejuvenate -- and the koala carers in Mallacoota are already preparing. Jack Bruce holds Wilbur, a koala rescued from the fires, who he and his partner Alyex Burges are helping rehome. A short drive from the golf course, volunteers Jack Bruce and Alyex Burges believe they may have found a new home for Wilbur, an adult koala that fled the blazes five days ago. After spending that time in a cage, clinging to a stump and shrouded in a buffet of eucalyptus leaf varieties, he's going back to the bush. A fertile gully at the back of Bruce's family farm has been identified as being relatively unscathed after last week's flames. But when the pair conduct a cursory check that Wilbur is not going to be put up an already occupied tree, they are shocked to find they have company. This area was meant to be wiped of life -- but up in the canopy is a healthy mother koala with a baby on her back. Birds sing as she takes in some of the 20 hours of sleep the species enjoys a day.

  18. The US says it is "ready to engage without preconditions in serious negotiations" with Iran following the countries' exchange of hostilities. In a letter to the UN, the US justified its decision to kill top Iran Gen Qasem Soleimani as an act of self-defence. Iran has retaliated by firing missiles at air bases housing US forces in Iraq causing no casualties. It also told the UN it was an act of self-defence. Gen Soleimani was widely held as being Iran's second most senior official. As head of the Revolutionary Guards' elite Quds Force, he was an architect of Iranian policy in the region. -Five things to note from Trump's Iran speech -Analysis: Is there more to come from Iran? -Explained: A quick guide to the story so far Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei described the missile attacks as a "slap in the face" for the US and called for an end to the American presence in the Middle East. The US strike on Soleimani also killed members of Iran-backed Iraqi militias, who have also vowed revenge. However, US Vice-President Mike Pence told CBS News that "intelligence" indicated that Iran had asked its allied militias not to attack US targets. The US House of Representatives has scheduled a vote for Thursday on limiting President Donald Trump's ability to wage war against Iran without specific approval from Congress. What do the letters say? In a letter to the UN Security Council, US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft said the US was ready to negotiate "with the goal of preventing further endangerment of international peace and security or escalation by the Iranian regime". The killing of Soleimani was justified, the letter argued, under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which requires states to "immediately report" to the Security Council any measures taken in exercising the right of self-defence. The US would take additional action "as necessary" in the Middle East to protect its personnel and interests, the letter added. Iran also cited Article 51 as justification for its attack on US bases. Iran's UN Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi wrote that Tehran "does not seek escalation or war" after exercising its right to self-defence by taking a "measured and proportionate military response targeting an American air base in Iraq". "The operation was precise and targeted military objectives thus leaving no collateral damage to civilians and civilian assets in the area," he wrote. What did Mr Trump say about the Iranian strikes? US President Donald Trump has previously threatened military action against Iran if it were to target US personnel and bases, but he did not announce any military action, saying Iran's attack had caused no casualties. "No Americans were harmed in last night's attack by the Iranian regime," he said. "Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned," he added. The US House of Representatives is expected to vote on Thursday on a resolution to force Mr Trump to halt further military action against Iran unless Congress gives it the all-clear. "Members of Congress have serious, urgent concerns about the administration's decision to engage in hostilities against Iran and about its lack of strategy moving forward," Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House, said in a statement. The US responded with air strikes against the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah. Militia supporters then attacked the US embassy in Baghdad. Soleimani was regarded as a terrorist by the US government, which says he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and was plotting "imminent" attacks. The US has not provided evidence of this.
