  3. The latest update to the Twitter app has killed off support for iOS 12, with the latest version of the app now requiring iOS 14 or later in order to function – and that means users of the iPhone 6, which can’t be updated beyond iOS 12, can no longer access all of Twitter’s features. While we can’t get hold of an iPhone 6 to see for ourselves, users across Twitter have been complaining about losing access to many features on their phones, following the update.Without the option to upgrade beyond iOS 12, it’s plain to see why iPhone 6 users, along with owners of the iPad Air and 6th-generation iPod Touch, are a bit miffed about the Twitter app's latest requirement. Users stuck on iOS 12 report that while they can still see tweets on their timeline, the rest of the app no longer functions correctly. Thankfully for users who are still clinging to their iPhone 6, it is not a completely lost cause, as it is still possible to use Twitter on the device, as the web client still functions without issue, but it’s hardly a perfect solution/it’s no substitute for the full app experience. Although the loss of full app functionality has come as a shock to many iPhone 6 users, the demise of Twitter on iOS 12 has been a long time coming, as the social media giant officially dropped support for the nearly four-year-old operating system in early 2021. Even after official support for the app stopped on iOS 12, iPhone 6 users were still able to enjoy the core functionality of the app, albeit without the new features of the latest versions. Looking at the numbers though, it’s no surprise that Twitter will have wanted to scuttle the older version of the app. According to Apple, only 2% of iPhone users are still using a version of iOS that’s older than iOS 14, which makes maintaining an aging version of the Twitter app a largely worthless but nonetheless costly endeavor. Regardless of the fact that this decision only affects 2% of Apple’s users who have stuck with their seven-year-old devices, it’s nevertheless a reminder that planned obsolescence is very much an issue that will come for all our devices eventually.
  4. Watch out, Mars! Earthlings are planning to put their boots all over you by 2040 and we might just have the funding to actually do it for a change. Just, please, no demon gates to hell. The recent State of NASA address revealed its plan to get actual humans back out into the stars and exploring space. This is being backed by a White House budget request of $26 billion in 2023 to help fund various exploration programs. "Our goal is to apply what we've learned living and operating on the moon and continue then out into the solar system. Our plan is for humans to walk on Mars by 2040," agency administrator Bill Nelson said during the presentation. The first step is working towards the Artemis moon missions, which NASA says will see the first woman and person of colour on the moon. From there the plan is to build an Artemis Base Camp to aid in further exploration and research on the moon's surface, as well as an orbiting spaceship Gateway. In 2024 we should see a crew of astronauts back in orbit, and then another moon landing by 2026 to continue their research. From there, NASA has detailed plans up until about 2027 where further landings are planned as part of the Artemis moon missions in the coming years. This will all likely be done with other partners like SpaceX, and what we learn there will help with NASA's goals to get people on Mars in the next two decades. The budget will also be allocated to areas that aren't always immediately thought of when it comes to space exploration. While around $822 million is planned for returning soil samples from Mars, and $480 million is dedicated to robot exploration of the moon, $500 million is set to help develop more environmentally sustainable aviation strategies. Some is also probably for flinging spaceships at rocks, because fun isn't just for Kerbals. Mars exploration is currently being undertaken by robots like the Perseverance Rover and Ingenuity Helicopter. This is giving scientists back here on Earth the chance to do as much research as possible before we get our alien buts out there on another planet. For now, get your space fix by checking out what the Hubble telescope was looking at on your birthday.

  7. Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 will get a cover display of 6.5 inches and the size of its internal display will be 8 inches, according to a noted tipster. The second foldable phone from Xiaomi is also said to come with an improved crease on the internal screen. Furthermore, the information about the specifications and design of the smartphone have also leaked. The phone may get a book-style folding design -- just like the Mi Mix Fold -- and could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus SoC. Tipster Digital Chat Station claims that the alleged Mi Mix Fold 2 smartphone by Xiaomi will get 6.5-inch and 8-inch displays with a 120Hz refresh rate, alongside DC dimming feature for eye protection. The cover display of the Mi Mix Fold coems with a 60Hz refresh rate. The tipster goes on to claim that the internal display of the new foldable will get LTPO technology, and the “crease will be much better” (translated) than its predecessor. It is speculated that the Mi Mix Fold 2's screen will have a thinner crease as compared to Mi Mix Fold. Furthemore, the tipster says that Mi Mix Fold 2 will be powered by the rumoured Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus SoC. This chipset, which could have model number SM8475, is said to be based on TSMC's 4nm manufacturing platform and offer a number of improvements. The phone is said to launch sometime “in the middle of the year”. Xiaomi did not launch the Mi Mix Fold in India and there is no word on whether the Chinese company will release the second generation of its folding phone in the country.
  8. Microsoft is looking to take some of the strain out of learning on the job with a new expansion to its Viva platform. In a new entry on the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the company revealed that users will soon be able to discover Viva learning content directly through SharePoint, Office.com and Bing. Previously, users had only been able to access such content through the video conferencing platform Microsoft Teams, with the move now opening up a whole new range of opportunities. Microsoft says that the new update is an integration between Viva Learning and Microsoft Search, meaning actually being able to find the right content that is applicable to your workers should also be a lot quicker and easier now. The roadmap entry notes that the feature is still in development for the moment, but Microsoft has said it hopes to issue a release in March 2022. When complete, the feature will be available for all Microsoft Viva web users around the world. Launched in February 2021, Microsoft Viva integrates with Teams and other Windows software tools to operate as a kind of intranet that brings together knowledge, learning, and communication services. The platform was launched with remote working policies in mind, and is made up of four main pillars, one of which is Viva Learning. Microsoft says the offering is geared towards employee development and allows members of staff to share, assign, and learn from an organization’s training material, helping speed up onboarding and training processes. Aside from learning and training, Viva also looks to support employee wellbeing and combat issues such as loneliness and burnout. Microsoft also revealed a series of guided meditations and mindful exercises for the platform which users will be able to access via Microsoft Teams as it looks to help workers de-stress and become more productive.
  9. For the past two years I've been scouring the web for any glimmer of hope that graphics card pricing may be coming back down to Earth—an ongoing GPU shortage has left us scrabbling for stock, resulting in high prices and high costs for entry into the wonderful world of PC gaming. Largely to no avail, of course. Today, however, I can be far more positive about my findings. Look to major retailers in the UK, EU, and the US and you'll find something strange when you search their virtual shelves for the rare graphics card. Not only are there GPUs in stock, but there is a wide availability of many models and versions to suit multiple budgets. Scroll through Best Buy, Overclockers, or MindFactory and you'll be pleasantly greeted by listing after listing touting "in stock", "available to buy", or "add to basket". However, only a few, if any, are for graphics cards at or close to MSRP. The only GPU that's regularly spotted near or at MSRP is AMD's RX 6500 XT, one of the more recent arrivals to the RX 6000-series lineup. It's not a card we're altogether fond of, in all honesty, but it is a modern GPU that resembles anything close to affordable. Beyond that, website 3DCenter has been keeping an eye on graphics card pricing over the past year, and its latest report from Germany shows both AMD and Nvidia graphics cards with price tags averaging around 25% over MSRP. That's the lowest premium on graphics cards noted in the site's report for over a year, and no doubt improving supply has put an end to the frenzied demand that saw graphics cards going for double, or triple, their original value. But how long can any inflation of graphics card prices last if stock continues to improve? I'd guess not long, though it's not going to be as simple as returning to 'business as usual' and offering cards at MSRP at a moment's notice. Business as usual for two years hasn't been anything close to MSRP, and that has all sorts of implications all the way up the supply chain. With hundreds of graphics cards listed as in stock across multiple major retailers in Western Europe and North America, there is undoubtedly a competitive advantage to the retailers that can drop prices further than others. Though this is a double-edged sword for most: manufacturers have faced increased prices for key components, and that has been passed onward down the retail chain. Most often, it's the customers who end up footing the bill, but if demand eases off so totally, and supply improves, it may have to be retailers that take the brunt of lowering price tags.
  10. Epic Games and Microsoft have, through Fortnite in-game purchases, raised over $70 million to be donated towards humanitarian relief in the ongoing Russo-Ukraine war. And it's still got a week to go. Epic has pledged that, from March 20 until April 3, all proceeds from real-money purchases in Fortnite would be donated to four humanitarian organisations currently operating in Ukraine: Direct Relief, UNICEF, the UN World Food Programme and the UN Refugee Agency. The company says "more organizations will be added to this list in the coming weeks." Xbox agreed to partner-up with Epic on this, and has committed its net proceeds from Fortnite during this period. In a blog post Epic clarified it would not wait for transactions to be fully processed, but instead is committing to distributing any funds raised "within days." Putting this sum in context is difficult but, if you look at the list of foreign aid being given to Ukraine over this period, the amount that Fortnite is contributing is more than some small countries. In terms of other companies, this looks like the single biggest contribution made by far (Meta Platforms ie Facebook donated $15 million; Amazon $10 million; Samsung around $6 million), although of course not all donations can or have been quantified financially—SpaceX's involvement in offering its Starlink system, for example. The Fortnite pledge runs for another seven days, and you wouldn't bet against it breaking the $100 million mark—in fact it may already have done, because the $70 million figure is now a couple of days old. Fortnite already seems to be the single largest corporate donor to the Russo-Ukraine conflict and, by the end of the pledge period, the amount will be even higher. Epic and Microsoft deserve all the credit going for this, particularly as the former chose to launch the donation drive at the same time as Chapter 3 Season 2 was released on March 20: exactly the time when players will be buying their battle passes and fancy new skins. Epic will continue to donate proceeds to Ukraine until the drive ends on April 3. Link: https://www.pcgamer.com/epic-and-fortnite-is-now-the-single-biggest-corporate-donor-to-ukraine/

  13. OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite alleged renders have been leaked, and they suggest that the smartphone will come with a triple rear camera setup. The camera module on the OnePlus smartphone looks quite similar to the one carried by various Realme smartphones launched in multiple markets. The smartphone is also tipped to get a display with a hole-punch cutout on the top-left corner for selfie camera, run Android 12 out-of-the-box, and is expected to pack a high-resolution primary camera sensor. Citing people familiar with the matter, a report by 91Mobiles says that the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite will get a glossy plastic rear panel with curved sides, and sport a rectangular camera module. The module is said to get two large camera sensors, a small third camera, and an LED flash. When seen from the front, the phone is suggested to get a display with a hole-punch cutout on the top left corner. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite is claimed to get a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the right spine, and volume controls as well as a hybrid SIM slot on the left. There will be a USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, the report says, adding that the OnePlus phone will not come with an Alert Slider. 91Mobiles report also says that this will be the first Nord phone with Android 12 out-of-the-box, and it will get a high-resolution primary sensor along with two 2-megapixel cameras. There is no ultra-wide camera, the report cites a source as saying. As per a previous report, OnePlus Nord 2 CE Lite 5G will sport a 6.59-inch full-HD Fluid display. It could be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G SoC, paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. It may feature either 128GB or 256GB of onboard storage. It is said to come with a 64-megapixel primary sensor, and a 16-megapixel camera on the front. The phone may pack a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support.

  15. This weekend, Dell has a big sale on several gaming laptops and desktops. One deal that stood out to us was a G15 Ryzen Edition gaming laptop for only $681. This model of the G15 Ryzen usually sells for $1,019, but thanks to an instant discount and coupon code SAVE17, you can save over $300 at checkout. This 15-inch gaming laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H mobile CPU, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and an RTX 3050. This GPU nearly matches the GTX 1660 Ti in terms of power, and it also takes advantage of the RTX 30-series DLSS and ray tracing support. The Ryzen 5000 H-series CPU should let you perform most productivity tasks from school or work with no major issues. On the gaming front, expect to play most games at 1080p if you don't mind turning down your graphics settings to low-medium, depending on the game. If your favorite game supports DLSS, you might even be able to eke out a dozen or extra frames on the budget GPU thanks to Nvidia AI supersampling technology. The 8GB RAM inside the G15 Ryzen isn't great, and to make matters worse it's only single-channel, but should hit the minimum requirements for most modern games like Cyberpunk 2077. At least it should be an easy upgrade later in life if you fancy it. FYI, if you plan on picking up Elden Ring, its minimum requirement for RAM is at least 12GB. The 256GB storage capacity NVMe SSD means you should probably invest in upgrading or pairing the laptop with a speedy external SSD to keep your games on down the road. I'd use the money saved and cram one of those cool-looking Star Wars SSDs into this, but that's just me. One thing you could do is sign up for game streaming services like Nvidia's GeForce Now or Xbox Game Pass, which would let you stream your digital game library in good quality and at pretty low latency regardless of what's under the hood of the laptop. Another plus is that streaming games will free up precious space on this laptop's already tiny SSD as long as you have a reliable internet connection.
