  3. It's really a shame that the Nissan Patrol wasn't sold in America after 1969—at least, technically. These Jeep-like vehicles were first offered by Nissan in 1951 and have continued to be very capable and po[CENSORED]r vehicles across the globe through to today's sixth-generation. Unfortunately, the U.S. missed out after 1969, so it's considered a very rare Nissan in the States. Fortunately, one is coming up for sale at the 2023 Mecum Auctions Kissimmee on January 4-15, 2023. The first generation of the Nissan Patrol was built in 1951 and called the 4W60. It looked very much like a Willys Jeep, and much of it was copied from the Willys CJ-3B, including its iconic flat front fenders. It was only sold through Nissan's Japanese dealerships with the 3.7 liter NAK I-6 engine, the same one used in its 290 bus. Just like the Willys, it featured a part-time 4WD drivetrain and four-speed manual transmission. It would eventually spawn a two-door pickup and fire truck versions, but there was also the Nissan Carrier known as the 4W70 that was based off a Dodge M37 chassis and using the 4W60 engine and drivetrain. Both it and the 4W65, now named the Patrol, would eventually use a version of the Nissan P engine that would be found in the next-generation Patrol, the 60 Series. The 60 Series began production in 1959 for Australia with the 86.6-inch short wheelbase (SWB, 60) and the 98.4-inch long wheelbase (LWB, G60) and as right-hand drives. LHD models sold outside of the country, like ones sold in North America, were designated L60 and GL60 but were otherwise similar in design and powertrains. Unfortunately for North America—specifically Canada and the U.S.—the Nissan Patrol was only available from 1962 through 1969, but that did include the KGL60 hardtop that was offered in 1963. Although they were sold by Datsun dealerships, the Patrols were branded under the Nissan name, making them (along with 100 1960s Nissan Cedrics) the first models sold under the Nissan banner until the 1980s. There was also a super-long-wheelbase version known as the H60, which was 110.2 inches long. Under the hood of these Patrols was the Nissan P40, a 123- to 143-hp 4.0-liter I-6 engine mated to either a three- or four-speed manual transmission with a part-time 4WD that operated each axle independently. The engine wasn't anything special, being a cast-iron block and head with bathtub-shaped combustion chambers, but it was used until 2003, most recently in the Spanish-market version of the Patrol known as the 260 Series, which was based off the third-generation 160 Series. There was also a version made just for fire-fighting trucks like the 1962 to 1966 FR40, the PF. The changes included using a better alternator and engine block heater, among other improvements.
  4. Christmas spirit is back in Nainital, Mussoorie and other tourist spots in Uttarakhand. Hotels and guesthouses are almost booked and eateries along lakes and parks decked up for the festival season. For the tourism industry, this year marks the return of business as usual with Covid restrictions such as hotels and restaurants opening at half seating capacity and social distancing that were in force, now lifted. While the Mall Road in Nainital has been lit up and speakers set up along the street for revellers, forest rest houses and bungalows at the Jim Corbett and the Rajaji tiger reserves, promise a quieter retreat for those planning to visit the state for Christmas-New Year. Tourism is central to the state’s economy and it was impacted by the pandemic, but with easing of restrictions in view of declining cases, it is expected that this year will end on a positive note, people associated with the tourism and hotel industry said. “The Mall Road in Nainital is lit up and speakers have been installed all over the place,” Nainital Hotel Association president Digvijay Singh said. Music will be played from 6 pm to 10 pm every evening as part of festivities. “We have also sought the permission of authorities to play music till 12 am on December 31,” Singh said. Some hotelliers in Nainital, who have offered up to 50 per cent discount on room reservations, said bookings are almost full for New Year’s eve. Mussoorie is also awaiting a large number of visitors during the week with hotels and guest houses nearly full, the Tourism Information Centre said. Similarly, forest rest houses and bungalows at the Corbett and the Rajaji tiger reserves are seeing a rush of guests for Christmas and New Year eve. Day and night safaris at the Jim Corbett National Park are also booked, its director Dhiraj Pandey told PTI. Rajaji Tiger Reserve director Saket Badola said here too bungalows of are full. Considering the number of bookings vigilance and patrolling in the area has also been stepped up, he said. People are enquiring about the availability of rooms at private resorts around the Corbett Tiger Reserve but the number of bookings for Christmas so far has been less. But for New Year eve the response has been massive, Hotel and Resort Owners Welfare Association president Hari Singh Mann said. In Nainital, Naresh Gupta, manager at Manu Maharani Hotel, said bookings for December 31 are full and that for Christmas is increasing. The owners of Moksham Glamping Resort, located around 25 kms from Nainital, said several arrangements have been made for Christmas-New Year. Since the resort is located in a remote area away from the bustle of Nainital, people besides the in-house entertainment, also enjoy the scenic beauty and serenity of the place, Ankit Karki and Yashika Bisht said. Hotels and lodges in the Muni-ki-Reti and the Lakshman Jhula areas of Rishikesh are also booked for the upcoming week. However, Ramnagar Gipsy Owners Welfare Committee president Girish Dhasmana said the number of tourists coming without advance planning this year is negligible. Reduction in the number of gipsies entering the Sitabani forest area from 150 to 50 has caused losses to the trade, Dhasmana said. There are no bookings for Christmas as such in Rishikesh but for New Year eve bookings are full, Lakshman Jhula Resort and Hotel Welfare Association president Dipak Bisht said. Hotels and resorts in Rishikesh are likely to bustle with tourists from December 24 to January 2, vice president of the Indian Association of Rafting Outfitters Prateek Kalia said. In Auli, Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam manager Kamal Kishore Dimri said hotels and guest houses at the international skiing destination in Chamoli district are full from December 24 to January 1. Former president of the BJP’s hotel and resort cell Chandraveer Pokhriyal said a brisk Covid-free tourism is going on. Hotels are all packed for the new year eve celebrations, he said.
  5. Moto E13 smartphone from Motorola has reportedly been subjected to a render leak that seems to suggest the upcoming entry-level smartphone's basic design and camera details. The smartphone, which was earlier tipped to be powered by an Unisoc T606 SoC while running on Android 13 out-of-the-box, has now reportedly been spotted in a beige colour offering that sports a curved rear panel. Meanwhile, in terms of camera, the rear setup seems to be made of a single camera sensor. According to a report by Mysmartprice, the purported upcoming Moto E13 entry-level smartphone device has been spotted in an alleged official render sporting a beige colour plastic frame. The rear side, which is apparently curved in shape, is seen housing a single camera module above a slot for an LED flash inside a second cutout. The traditional Motorola batwing logo can be seen at the center of the rear panel. In terms of connectivity, the phone seems to sport a USB type-C port on the bottom, alongside a speaker grille and a microphone cutout. The render seems to suggest that the Moto E13 will sport a rather flat frame that houses the power and volume toggle buttons on its right side. The display on the Moto E13 seems to be a waterdrop notch design with bezels that are narrow around the screen but seems to get very thick at the chin of the purported smartphone. The Lenovo-owned smartphone manufacturer Motorola's purported E-series phone, Moto E13, had earlier been spotted on Geekbench website, which suggested that the entry-level smartphone could be powered by an octa-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM, while running on Android 13 out-of-the-box. The octa-core processor was spotted as an Arm chipset codenamed m170, which could be the Unisoc T606 SoC. In terms of processor performance, it reportedly scored 318 in the single-core test while scoring 995 points in multi-core Geekbench tests. However, it is important to note that there has been no official confirmation on the name, specifications, pricing, or launch details of the purported entry-level smartphone from the Lenovo-owned smartphone manufacturer, Motorola. 5G is now available both on Android and iPhone in India. But is it any good? We discuss this on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. 8. Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4, which delivers the first experience built on top of Wear OS 3 and comes with some really good features, doesn't have the best battery life.As per a report by SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant may launch Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 with slightly larger batteries for the 40mm and 44mm models. A certification by Safety Korea showed that both sizes are getting upgraded in the next generation. It will be an incremental upgrade again, week-long battery endurance still isn't possible for full-fledged smartwatches.Garmin D2 Mach 1 Aviator Smartwatch With Up to 11 Days Battery Life Debuts The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 40mm (EB-BR900ABY) will have a 276mAh battery, up from 247mAh (+29mAh). The larger Watch 5 44mm (EB-BR910ABY) will have a 397mAh battery, up from 361mAh (+36mAh). Of course, battery life is a function of two things —battery capacity and the efficiency of the hardware. The Watch 4 generation introduced the Exynos W920, a 5nm chip, which is more efficient than the 10nm Exynos 9110 used in the Watch 3 series and the 12nm Snapdragon Wear 4100 used in some non-Samsung watches. By the sound of it, 4nm foundries are running at full capacity, so a new, more efficient wearable chipset is unlikely. Amazon Alexa Now Available on Fossil Gen 6 Smartwatches Previous reports said that Samsung had found a way to integrate a thermometer into the next-gen watch, which will be used to track skin temperature, useful to detect early signs of infection and track ovulation cycles. The Galaxy Watch 5 generation won't be unveiled until the second half of this year.
  9. Instagram has added three messaging improvements to its app that should make conversations easier to manage and more colorful. The updates include the ability to quickly share a post, share a short clip of a music track, and customize the chat background to one that's not black and white anymore. Meta's photo-sharing platform has been busy, recently enabling Instagram on the web, the return of the chronological feed, and a bigger focus on helping users message each other in easier ways. Quick send will enable you to hold down the share button on a post in your feed, and quickly send it to a friend or family member without going anywhere else in the app. You can also share 30-second clips of music tracks from Apple Music, with Amazon Music and Spotify integration coming soon. Finally, there's the new ability to change the background of the person you're chatting with, which means you can finally get rid of the black or white background. Instagram isn't breaking new ground here. WhatsApp chat has a similar feature. But while some may think that these are minor updates, they're potentially substantial ones for those who use Instagram more than they use Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp. With the ability to personalize your chat background and more easily share content through the main feed, it looks as though Instagram isn't done refining how you can message others on its app, and we may see more improvements in this area later this year. Instagram CEO, Adam Mosseri promised toward the end of 2021 that there would be a bigger focus on messaging and now the platform is delivering on that promise. Messaging friends and family on Instagram has become more common in recent years, due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sharing posts or just keeping in touch with those who only use Instagram has become a new standard for some users. According to Instagram, 44% of its users are on the app to shop for products, so it's safe to assume that the majority would want to use messaging services to see where their purchases are, and if they want to receive special offers through the messaging side of Instagram. However small these new features may sound for messaging, they leave us with the impression that this is an area of interest to Mosseri and the Instagram team. Granted, Meta also has Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp in the same category, but Instagram is on its own siloed island where you can't get the same content through these apps and Facebook.Instagram has always set itself apart from others, building bespoke services like Instagram Stories, Reels, and shopping. Meta usually holds a yearly conference called Facebook F8, where it gives updates on its products and platforms. We may see a similar event this year but with a name change (we'd suggest "Meta8"). So, there's a good chance we may be hearing more about messages on Instagram in the near future.
  10. Newegg has got a tremendous one-day deal on a 15-inch Aorus 15P gaming laptop for only $1,199. This laptop that usually sells for $1,899 is now $700 off, perhaps the best laptop deal we've seen in a good long while. The Aorus 15P is powered by an Intel Core i7 11th Gen 11800H mobile CPU, 16GB of DDR RAM, and an RTX 3070 laptop GPU. This will give excellent 1080p performance at a stellar framerate on the highest settings. The five-pound laptop sits about an inch and a half thick, so it'll travel well. The 15 inch-screen is a speedy 240Hz on an IPS panel, which means this will be an ideal laptop for playing competitive games League of Legends, Fortnite, or Call of Duty. Our most common complaint about many laptop deals is that storage is usually criminally small. So, you can imagine our surprise when we saw this P15 comes with a 1TB SSD instead of a 512GB SSD, which is what we usually see. Since Aorus is Gigabyte's premium gaming line of laptops, they're a bit more stylish than what you usually see from Gigabyte, which tends to look like boring work laptops. If you're using this for more work than play, the P15 also comes with an SD card reader, Thunderbolt 4 port, and mini-Dp and HDMI 2.1 output support. The only major downside is that since the screen bezel is so thin, the webcam is actually in the laptop's hinge, which we often refer to as a "nose cam." It might be good to invest in a decent webcam to give yourself a more flattering angle. That said, nabbing a nearly $2000 gaming laptop for only $1,200 is a helluva steal.
  11. Ever since we first got a look at the upcoming version of Dwarf Fortress which, for the first time ever, will have pixel graphics rather than indecipherable ASCII, I've been hankering to see how they'll give a proper UI to characters. The new version coming to Steam has been powering along for a few years now and we've got a proper look at what makes a Dwarf a Dwarf. The incredibly influential and detailed colony sim will now have proper interfaces for the characters, and developer Tarn Adams has given a breakdown of just what that's going to look like. Figuring out why Dwarfs do what they do is one of the delights of Dwarf Fortress, and the newly linked and collated Personality, Traits, Thoughts, and Memories tabs will finally give you a real look at what's going on in a centralized, accessible way. There's also a properly-done Relations tab that lets you jump to the other dwarfs and gives you a little sprite for those characters. Meanwhile, other tabs like inventory, health, and history are much more usable. Wondering why the character has sutures on their wrist? You can look and see when that happened, how it was treated, and what combat event made it go down. You can even access a character's knowledge and drill down from there into their philosophical or musical education.
