  4. KUALA LUMPUR: The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) might be looking towards a reduction in excise duties for vehicles, which will, in turn, result in a reduction in car prices. While there may be less revenue for the government from a reduction in excise duties, this can be compensated by a larger sales volume.
  5. Procter & Gamble (P&G) said Wednesday its controversial Gillette ad targeting “toxic masculinity” was resonating with younger consumers and producing solid sales despite criticism from some conservatives and calls for a boycott. Chief Financial Officer Jon Moeller said the company was pleased at the attention surrounding the spot for the struggling shaving brand, which features images of men carousing and cat-calling at women, as well as examples of men reining in bullies and coaching children. “We’ve received unprecedented levels of both media coverage and consumer engagement in that campaign,” Moeller, said, adding that retail sales of the brand had been stable since the ad was released January 14, while online sales had continued to grow. “It’s a part of our effort to connect more meaningfully with younger consumer groups. Early results when you look at the age group specifics both externally and internally reflect that we’re accomplishing that objective.” The nearly 2-minute ad, the latest by a big brand on a hot-button social issue, comes as the more than 100-year-old product continues to struggle amid meager demand for shaving gear as more men grow beards and online competitors like Harry’s contend for market share. Moeller defended the company’s actions to try to boost Gillette, which enacted price cuts in 2017 and new products prior to launching its “Me Too” ad, which went viral and did not require extra spending to be seen. “As the CFO, I’m very interested in the financial effectiveness of the campaign,” Moeller said. “That campaign was aired once and has generated significant conversation and has generated a huge number of impressions.” The spot, “We Believe: The Best Men Can Be,” has been viewed more than 25.2 million times on YouTube, with 693,00 giving it a thumbs-up and 1.2 million giving it a thumbs-down. The campaign was mocked by Rush Limbaugh and other conservative commentators, with some consumers posting #BoycottGillette hashtag on Twitter and complaining they felt “too masculine” for the brand and characterising the spot as “anti-male.”

Juan Guaido, leader of the centre-left Po[CENSORED]r Will Party, called an end to President Nicolas Maduro's 'dictatorship' yesterday and was recognised by U.S. President Donald Trump as the country's interim leader. Trump has hinted at military action but the Kremlin warned of 'catastrophic consequences' if Washington intervened by force, calling foreign intervention a 'path to lawlessness and bloodshed', as Moscow joined China, Turkey and Iran in standing firm behind Maduro. The country's top military command has today expressed its loyalty to Maduro, who has vowed to fight on despite the protests which have erupted after his disputed election victory on May 20 last year. 12. Chris Brownis taking his own legal action. On Tuesday, it was revealed that the star was being detained by police in Paris over accusations of aggravated rape and drug offenses. Later Tuesday, the star and two other individuals were released. Citing French prosecutors, TMZ reported Brown was released without bail and is free to leave the country. A source told NBC News, "The investigation is not closed at this stage and continues under the authority of the Parquet of Paris. The star sounded off on social media with a since-deleted adamant denial. "I WANNA MAKE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR...... THIS IS FALSE AND A WHOLE LOT OF CAP! NNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!! FOR MY DAUGHTER AND MY FAMILY THIS IS SO DISPRESPECTFUL AND IS AGAINST MY CHARACTER AND MORALS!!!!!" he captioned a photo that read, "THIS B--CH LYIN.'" Since the star's rebuttal, Brown is taking his defense one step further. His attorney Raphael Chiche confirmed to E! News that they are getting a defamation complaint ready and plan to file it today at the prosecutor's office. According to reports, a woman accused the star of raping her at a Paris hotel last week.

  14. This ‘quadrupedal’ vehicle may look like a smart shopping trolley ready for a supermarket dash in some distant interstellar community. But, in fact, it’s a full-size, robotic walking car, which Hyundai believes may be helpful in rescue zones when normal vehicles, even the most robust 4x4s, just can’t hack it. It’s called the ‘Elevate’ and by blending technology found in modern electric cars with advanced robotics, it can climb up 5ft walls, straddle a 5ft hole and step across piles of debris, thanks to the addition of four fully articulated robotic legs – and all the while keeping its passengers completely level. The idea is that the Elevate could be driven by first responders to a disaster location, just like a traditional electric car, but then when the terrain became impassable it could use its highly dexterous legs to move in any direction. It can walk at 3mph and the legs are powered by the same battery that drives the car’s motor. The concept was unveiled by Hyundai in Las Vegas last week alongside a clever electric car that will be able to autonomously drive to an empty parking space, charge itself up and then return to your house, ready for the next journey. 15. The new Surviving R. Kelly docuseries has started a chain reaction surrounding embattled singer R. Kelly. Police recently raided his Chicago studio and found evidence that someone had been living there, which is a city code violation. However, the singer is denying he uses the lab for living quarters. Sources close to the singer told TMZ on Saturday (Jan. 19), that he denies ever holding up residence in the infamous recording studio, which was featured in the Lifetime series. He claims the sleeping setup is only for when he needs to stay overnight for long recording sessions. Kelly also denies renovating the studio for a bedroom setup and fesses up to only adding furniture. Some believe that Kelly is housing at least two women in the studio who are being sought after by their parents. Police raided the studio on Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 16) in search of evidence that the women may be there or any other evidence that would link Kelly to a crime. Curiously, a man appeared to remove a hard drive and computer from the studio right before the raid took place. Kelly has been the center of attention since the docuseries aired. In it, several women accuse him of being a sexual predator and serial abuser. Most recently, another woman has come forward with claims against the singer. Tracy Sampson, a former Epic Records intern, is accusing the singer of kissing her when she was 16. She claims the incident happened in 1999 and the two carried on a relationship for two years until Sampson called it off when she was 18. “I was in love with him. I just didn’t know what to do,” she said. “Like, I didn’t know if this was normal. I didn’t know if this is how adults acted. Like, I – I just didn’t know. I didn’t know.” On Friday (Jan. 18), it was announced Kelly and his label home Sony had parted ways.

  19. team of engineers and medical researchers found that the technology enabled surgeons to pick up clinically relevant cancers that were missed when using current visual detection methods. The best approach would be to use both techniques in tandem, according to the findings published today in European Urology. The software is deployed via a system called SmartTarget®. The advent of MRI-targeted biopsies, where MRI scans are used to inform surgeons where a tumour lies before they conduct a biopsy (tissue sample), has improved detection rates to close to 90% from 50% in the last five years. Now, the SmartTarget system has further enhanced this technique by allowing a 3D model of the prostate and cancer to be created for each patient from their MRI scans using advanced image processing and machine learning algorithms. During a biopsy, this model is fused with ultrasound images to highlight the area of concern, which otherwise does not appear in the ultrasound images, helping to guide the surgeon while conducting the procedure. Until last year when MRI targeting was introduced, the established way to test for prostate cancer involved taking a biopsy from the prostate without knowing where in the prostate a tumour was likely to be, resulting in close to half of life-threatening cancers being missed. "Prostate cancer detection has been improving at a very fast rate in recent years, and this technology pushes the science forward even further, enabling clinicians to pick up prostate cancer quickly so that patients can access the right treatment early enough," said co-senior author Professor Hashim Ahmed, who began the research in UCL Medicine before moving to Imperial College London. For the present study, 129 people with suspected prostate cancer underwent two biopsies -- one using the SmartTarget system, and one where surgeons could only visually review the MRI scans. Funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care and Wellcome Health Innovation Challenge Fund, the study was conducted at UCLH. The two strategies combined detected 93 clinically significant prostate cancers, with each of them picking up 80 of these cancers; each missed 13 that the other method picked up. The researchers say that surgeons' visual review of MRI scans should be used in tandem with SmartTarget as using this technique enables surgeons to learn to make subtle adjustments such as adapting to the movement of the patient and the prostate as the needle is inserted. "We developed the SmartTarget system to equip surgeons with vital information about the size, shape and location of prostate tumours during a biopsy that is otherwise invisible on ultrasound images," explained co-senior author Dr Dean Barratt (UCL Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering and UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing), who invented and led the development of the SmartTarget system. "The software provides them with a clear target. As MRI-targeted biopsies require a very high degree of expertise and experience, we hope that the imagery displayed by SmartTarget will help to bring high accuracy prostate cancer diagnosis to a much wider range of patients and hospitals." The researchers say the new methods could reduce the number of biopsies needed, and reduce the unnecessary surgeries caused by over diagnosis of less harmful cancers. The SmartTarget software has been commercialised by SmartTarget Ltd, a company spun out by UCL's commercialisation company UCL Business PLC (UCLB), and the system is already in use by several hospitals in the UK and USA. The inter-disciplinary study brought together engineers, urologists and radiologists, supported by the UCL Translational Research Office in project management and navigating the translational and regulatory pathway involved in taking the project from the lab bench to the operating room. "There has been much discussion and speculation in the media recently on the degree to which computers and artificial intelligence will be integrated into clinical care. Studies such as this one are extremely important as they provide valuable evidence on the performance of a new technology in the clinical setting," said co-senior author Professor Mark Emberton (Dean, UCL Medical Sciences). "With this study we now have hard data showing that SmartTarget is as good as a group of experts in targeting tumours in the prostate, and have a glimpse of how clinicians and computers will be working together in the future for the good of the patient."
  20. Well-known computer hardware leaker TUM_APISAK in a tweet this week claimed to unmask AMD's upcoming system-on-a-chip (SoC) for gaming consoles. The AMD SoC, allegedly called Gonzalo, reportedly combines the chipmaker's Zen processor architecture with it's future Navi graphics card architecture. The chip also fits the description of an accelerated processing unit (APU), meaning the processor should have integrated graphics. AMD Gonzalo with the codename 2G16002CE8JA2_32/10/10_13E9 could possibly be the APU that powers the next-generation gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft. At this time, it's not clear it's based on the Zen+ or Zen 2 architecture. However, Brad Sams, Executive Editor at Thurott, said last month that Microsoft's Xbox Scarlett will come equipped with an AMD Zen 2 octa-core processor built on the 7nm node. AMD Gonzalo purportedly features eight cores with a 1GHz base clock and a boost clock in the range of 3.2GHz. Sony's current Playstation 4 Pro employs a semi-custom AMD chip that tops out at 2.13GHz, while Microsoft's Xbox One X flaunts a slightly higher clocked part at 2.3GHz. If AMD Gonzalo's reported 3.2GHz boost clock speed is true, the APU will provide a very substantial performance improvement to the current generation of consoles running AMD SoCs based on the Jaguar architecture. What's more important with AMD Gonzalo is the potential incorporation of Navi 10 Lite graphics. Information on Navi 10 Lite is almost non-existent; however, reports say the unit utilized in AMD Gonzalo could come clocked at 1GHz. The latest rumor suggests that AMD will finally launch Navi at the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles, California this June. The rumor has some logic behind it as the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Scarlett have expected release dates of 2020.
  21. It looks like the Ford Shelby GT500 and midengine C8 Chevrolet Corvette might share a gearbox, according to a report from Road & Track. It would make some sense considering we know the new GT500 will get a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission from Tremec. We've also heard rumors, and audio, that the C8 Corvette will also get a DCT. We didn't count the number of shifts, but seven is such a nice number. Adding to those rumors, a Tremec employee newsletter stated that the company contacted Fassler, a supplier, "regarding a new project called GM-DCT." Fassler said it would provide gear honing machines for the new transmission. Later in summer 2017, Tremec sent an order for more machines for a new project called Ford-DCT. That newsletter said that the company had to modify two honing machines for the Ford job. The letter, wherever R&T got it, has been removed from the internet, possibly because of the story. This all seems plausible, but we'll have to wait for more C8 news to get the final confirmation. We've contacted both Ford and Chevy, and we'll update when we hear back. H/T: Road & Track
  22. The lookalike of the Tiger Zinda Hai actor was spotted in the parking area of Karachi's famous Bolton Market with social media users startled at the uncanny resemblance of the Karachiite with that of the megastar. Along with the eerily similar appearance, the lookalike also appears to be donning a similar taste in fashion as well as hairstyle as the Bharat star, bringing about conjectures that perhaps aside from being a mirror image, he is also a fan of the actor.
