  4. A Japanese court has ordered a high-profile TV reporter to pay 3.3 million yen ($30,000; £22,917) in damages to a journalist who accused him of rape. Shiori Ito alleged that Noriyuki Yamaguchi raped her in 2015 while she was unconscious. Prosecutors said there was not enough evidence for a criminal case, so Ms Ito brought a civil case. Ms Ito has become a symbol of the #MeToo movement in a country where people rarely report sexual assault. "I'm so happy," said 30-year-old Ms Ito, who held up a sign which read "victory" after the verdict was announced. But in a news conference hours later, Mr Yamaguchi said he planned to appeal - and he again denied the rape allegations. According to Ms Ito, 53-year-old Mr Yamaguchi - who is said to have close ties to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe - invited her to dinner to discuss a possible job opportunity in 2015. She suspects she may have been drugged, saying that when she regained consciousness, she was "in a hotel room and he was on top of me". Ms Ito was an intern at news agency Reuters when the alleged rape occurred. Mr Yamaguchi was then Washington bureau chief for the Tokyo Broadcasting System, a major media firm in Japan. When Japan's women broke their silence Investigations were opened but then dropped by police, citing insufficient evidence. Ms Ito said police forced her to re-enact the alleged rape with a life-sized doll while male officers looked on. A 2017 government survey found that only 4% of rape victims reported the crime to the police. Shiori Ito: In her own words As part of the investigation into my allegations, I was asked to come to the police station adjacent to the hotel I was taken to that night. When I arrived, accompanied by my best friend, for moral support, I was taken to a gymnasium on an upper floor of the station. I had heard about what was about to happen, and asked for my friend to be able to come with me. The police refused. I was taken into the gym and told to lie on a mattress, and life-size mannequin was then produced and three male officers moved the doll on top of me, asking me intimate questions about exactly what happened and taking photographs. I was told this was essential to the investigation. It was at this time, that I had to make the shift in my head from complainant to journalist. The only way I have been able to continue has been to completely compartmentalise my feelings - I had to treat this as a story I was following: I was seeking the truth as a journalist, detached and dispassionate. That is still the way I try to frame it in my mind. Ms Ito filed a civil lawsuit against Mr Yamaguchi seeking 11 million yen ($100,517 ; £76,758) in compensation. Mr Yamaguchi, who denies any wrongdoing and claims the sex was consensual, filed a counter-suit seeking 130 million yen ($1,187,941; £907,135) in compensation. He will now have to pay Ms Ito $30,000 in damages, but there remains no criminal case against him. Under Japan's rape law, prosecutors must prove violence or intimidation was involved, or that the victim was "incapable of resistance".

  8. American start-up Fisker has announced a partnership with Electrify America that will give drivers of its 2020 Ocean SUV access to "the largest open fast charging network" in the US. Fisker claims that Electrify America's 350kW rapid chargers, which are compatible with all mainstream electric vehicles (EVs), are capable of delivering more than 200 miles of range in as little as 30 minutes. The network is currently under development, with plans to be operating in 45 of the 50 states by December 2021. The announcement comes as the company gears up to unwrap the futuristic Tesla Model Y rival at the CES exhibition in Las Vegas on 4 January 2020. The Ocean will be offered primarily to customers through a leasing programme, with prices starting from $379 (£295) per month, after a deposit of $2999 (£2335), for the cheapest of the five trim levels. Prospective customers can pay a fully refundable $250 (£194) deposit now via Fisker's smartphone app to secure a reservation. Fisker says it will sell a "very limited" number of Oceans outright at the request of several global customers. The California-based company claims its first series production car is "the world’s most sustainable vehicle", with recycled, vegan and other natural products used throughout. A full-length solar roof is said to offer 1000 additional zero-emissions miles per year, while recycled fishing nets, t-shirts, bottles and tyres feature throughout the interior and exterior to lessen the model's well-to-wheel carbon footprint. The Ocean is also claimed to offer "the highest five-star safety rating", with Fisker drawing attention to the prominent side impact protection beams. It's unclear, however, whether the SUV has yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which conducts crash tests in the US. The Ocean rides high and has modern, utilitarian styling. Flared wheel arches hint at its performance potential, while narrow headlights and chrome detailing are a nod to the 2018 Fisker Emotion concept. It features what the firm calls “captivating design touches that have been traditionally reserved for supercars in the past”. Prominent styling details include a front-mounted radar in place of a grille, a large front air intake, flared wheel arches and a futuristic headlight design. Fisker has also confirmed that the side indicators double as charging indicators, turning green when the battery is full. Also featured is a targa-style removable roof section which Fisker says offers the open-air benefits of a convertible "without compromising the rugged and safe structural integrity of an SUV". The battery is claimed to provide a range of up to 300 miles. The Ocean will be available in four-wheel drive form, with an electric motor mounted on each axle. Fisker also claims that the SUV's interior will offer class-leading space, a large head-up display and an intelligent user interface. The company is also at work on developing solid-state battery technology, which it says would allow future vehicles to gain 500 miles worth of charge in as little as one minute. Fisker Inc. was formed in 2016, succeeding the bankrupted Fisker Automotive company that launched the Karma range-extender luxury saloon – now re-engineered and on sale as the Karma Revero GT – in 2011.
  9. The RAF is helping search for a missing Chilean air force plane that had 38 people on board, the Ministry of Defence has said. The C-130 Hercules, which was carrying 17 crew and 21 passengers, went missing less than two hours after taking off from the southern city of Punta Arenas on Monday afternoon. It was flying over the notoriously turbulent area of Drake Passage and heading to Antarctica when contact was lost. On Wednesday, the Chilean military asked the RAF for assistance and an A400M aircraft was deployed from the Falkland Islands. A liaison team of military and civilian personnel was also sent. The aircraft will carry out its first reconnaissance flight in support of the Chilean search effort on Thursday. Teams will scan an area of roughly 70,000 square miles using planes, satellites and ships, including vessels from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and the US.

  11. A police officer and at least five other people have died in a series of gun battles in Jersey City, in the US state of New Jersey. Two other police officers were also wounded during the incident, which culminated in a shootout after two gunmen barricaded themselves in a shop. Several local schools and businesses were also put on temporary lockdown. A motive for the incident has not yet been established. Authorities say they do not believe it was a terror attack. Authorities identified the police officer who died as Joseph Seals, 39, who was part of a state-wide programme to confiscate illegal weaponry. Speaking to reporters, Jersey City Police Chief Mike Kelly said Mr Seals was a "leading police officer in removing guns from the street". Mr Kelly said violence first erupted at a local cemetery just after 12:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Tuesday. Local media reported that confrontation between police and the suspects was linked to a murder investigation, but this has not been confirmed by authorities. Police at the scene immediately came under "high-powered rifle fire," Mr Kelly told reporters, and it is believed that Mr Seals was killed while approaching the two suspects, who have not been publicly identified. The pair fled the scene in a van and took shelter in a kosher supermarket where they held off armed police and federal officials for four hours, shooting off hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Investigators believe the two gunmen killed three people in the shop before they were shot dead. At least one survivor from the shop is being treated for injuries. Mr Kelly said investigators also believe the suspects' van contained an "incendiary device" which was removed and taken away for examination by police disposal specialists. "Based on what we now know, there are no ongoing threats to public safety that have any connections to today's events," New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy told reporters at a separate news conference. "This has been an incredibly tough day for Jersey City and the entire state of New Jersey," he added.
