  3. Welcome Back
  4. Powered by the 180bhp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder VTEC turbocharged engine available in the latest Civic hatchback, the Sport trim uses a revised damper set up to keep the HR-V level when cornering. The car maker is aiming the trim level at “buyers who want a sportier driving experience from a subcompact SUV”, and is set to begin production in December, with the first HR-V Sports being delivered early next year. The facelifted HR-V was revealed back in August with styling and technology upgrades to better compete in the small SUV segment. A thorough facelift alters the exterior, interior and engine range, with a 1.6-litre diesel leading the line-up. It will now be joined by the 1.5-litre turbo petrol. The HR-V's new styling joins the rest of the range in bearing Honda’s ‘solid wing face’, with a large chrome shape added to the front end of the car. A new paint colour and a new alloy wheel design will also be available. Inside, Honda claims to have improved the upholstery fabric and the design of the seats for better comfort. It has also aimed to improve refinement, with a greater use of soundproofing throughout, as well as a noise cancellation system to counter low-end engine noise. The existing 1.5-litre VTEC engine returns a claimed 53.2mpg and 121g/km under the new WLTP test cycle, an improvement over the pre-facelift version’s 49.6mpg and 134g/km. This is down to friction-reducing tweaks inside the cylinder bores and timing chain. Prices for the HR-V start from £19,795 for an entry-level 'S' trim model with the naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a manual transmission, rising to £26, 805 for an 'EX' grade with a CVT transmission. Across 2017, Honda sold 6098 HR-Vs, compared with 13,056 CR-Vs and 15,735 Civics, in both ninth and 10th generations. The HR-V’s best year so far was 2016, when 7266 units were sold.
  5. On Sunday Russian border guards fired on three Ukrainian ships and seized their crews off the Crimean Peninsula. Mr Trump said he would not meet Mr Putin at a G20 summit in the coming days, "based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned". German Chancellor Angela Merkel blamed the crisis "entirely" on Russia. She said she would raise the issue with President Putin at the G20 meeting, which is due to be held in Argentina on Friday and Saturday. The incident happened on Sunday, when two Ukrainian gunboats and a tug were sailing from Odessa to the port of Mariupol, in the Sea of Azov - which is shared between Russia and Ukraine. The vessels were stopped from entering the Kerch Strait and confronted by FSB border guards. After a lengthy standoff, during which the Ukrainian tug was rammed, the ships began turning back towards Odessa, the Ukrainian government says. The Russians opened fire, wounding at least three sailors, and seized the Ukrainian flotilla.

  9. On Thanksgiving, the commander-in-chief spoke on the phone with US troops who were stationed overseas. "You really are our heroes," he said. He also took their conversation in an unexpected direction, though, telling the troops "the nation's doing well economically - better than anybody in the world". His manner on the phone - criticised as too political - was nothing new. He has often bragged to the military about his accomplishments - and has also shown off what he's done for them. As he told reporters on Thanksgiving: "Nobody's done more for the military than me". The president has spent little time on the ground with US troops based abroad. Recently he said during a Fox News Sunday interview that a trip might be in the works. If he goes to Iraq or Afghanistan, it will be his first visit as commander-in-chief. He did not go to Arlington National Cemetery for Veterans Day. And he skipped an outing to a French cemetery that was filled with graves of US soldiers who had served in World War I. He has slighted the military in other ways too.
  10. The Passport will sit between the CR-V and three-row Pilot in Honda’s American SUV line-up and is pitched as a more capable, rugged model suited to active lifestyles. It has a more purposeful look than the CR-V, with oversized arches that accentuate its 20in alloy wheels and greater ground clearance than the Pilot. It will arrive with a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine as standard, making it something of an outlier in a category dominated by entry-level four-cylinder engines - but one that will surely appeal to American customers. The i-VTEC powerplant produces 280bhp and 262lb ft and is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. As standard on top-end Elite models and optionally on Sport, EX-L and Touring models, the Passport features Honda’s i-VTM4 torque-vectoring four-wheel drive system, which is able to send up to 70% of torque to the rear wheels. Four-wheel drive models can also switch between multiple driving modes for different weather and terrain, including snow, mud and sand, while front-wheel-drive models have a dedicated snowy conditions mode. Honda claims the Passport delivers best-in-class passenger space and luggage capacity, with push-button folding seats and a segmented underfloor cargo compartment. EX-L models and above receive an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system as standard, complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring and a multi-angle rear-view camera. Touring and Elite trims add a premium 10-speaker stereo system, front and rear parking sensors and blindspot monitoring.

  13. Audi is preparing to counter the new Mercedes-Benz CLA with its very own style-led coupé: a new five-door A3 liftback model. The most powerful version, which is set to make more than 400bhp, is described by Audi officials as a spiritual successor to the original Sport Quattro. The secret new Audi was granted production approval by former Audi chairman Rupert Stadler earlier this year and forms part of a future four-model A3 line-up. When it reaches the UK in 2020, it will be sold alongside successors to today’s five-door hatchback, two-door cabriolet and four-door saloon A3s. Sources told Autocar the new five-door A3 coupé could use the Sportback name to draw a link between it and the A5 Sportback, although that branding has previously been used for the five-door A3 hatchback. As well as rivalling the new Mercedes CLA, the upcoming Audi liftback will face competition from a future BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé in what is shaping up as a potentially lucrative market segment for the three German car makers. The word from Audi’s Ingolstadt headquarters in Germany suggests that the new A3 model has been drafted into the line-up as a possible replacement for the TT, sales of which have plummeted in recent years as buyers have abandoned compact two-door models in search of more versatile offerings. However, this is denied by highly placed Audi sources in Ingolstadt, who suggest the future of the TT coupé and roadster remains open for the time being. Further details about the new A3 model are scarce at this early stage, but insiders have told Autocar that the A3 liftback measures more than 4400mm in length. By comparison, the existing A5 Sportback is 4730mm long. More affordable versions of the new Audi are set to run either a 1.4-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engine in combination with a 48V electric system to provide them with mild-hybrid properties. However, Autocar has been told that plans have already been drawn up for a more powerful 2.0-litre model in the form of the S3 liftback. Set to rival the Mercedes-AMG CLA35, the four-wheel-drive S3 liftback is expected to offer more than 300bhp. The most powerful of Audi’s new five-door models will be an exciting RS3 liftback that’s planned for launch in 2021. Fitted with a revised version of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine that powers existing RS3 models, with a particulate filter among the other changes, it will go up against the new Mercedes-AMG CLA45 wielding more than 400bhp.
  14. Statements by three captured Ukrainians have been released by Russia's internal security service after Russian ships opened fire and seized three Ukrainian boats off the coast of Crimea. One of the men, Vladimir Lesovoy, said he was aware of the "provocative nature" of the Ukrainian action. Ukraine's navy commander said the men were forced to tell lies under duress. Western nations have condemned Russia's use of force, four years after it annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula. Why this crisis is fraught with risk The flare-up is the first outright clash between Ukraine and Russian forces for years, although pro-Russian separatists and Russian "volunteers" have been fighting Ukraine's army in two eastern regions.
