US President Donald Trump has played down the possible involvement of Saudi crown prince Mohamed bin Salman in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and has said that this case will not affect the "iron" alliance between Washington and Riyadh .
"It could be that the Crown Prince was aware of this tragic event, maybe he had it, and maybe not, we may never know all the facts surrounding the murder of Mr. Jamal Khashoggi," Trump said in a long statement.
Trump has assured that the CIA does not have any "definitive" conclusion on who ordered the Khashoggi assassination, despite press reports claiming that the agency accuses the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohamed bin Salman, of it.
In his statement, Trump has minimized that conclusion and even seems to dispute it by saying that "maybe not" there was implication of the crown prince, and has made it clear that he does not plan to take more punitive measures against Saudi Arabia in relation to the case.
"The United States intends to remain an unwavering ally of Saudi Arabia to ensure the interests of our country, Israel and all other allies in the region," said Trump.
