OnePlus Buds Pro 3 true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones have been launched in India. These audio wearables, priced at Rs. 11,999, sport dual drivers which include 11mm woofers and 6mm tweeters. They support up to 50dB of active noise cancellation (ANC), LHDC 5.0 audio codec and dual-device connectivity. Just the earbuds come with an IP55 rating and they support the slide touch control function. The earphones are claimed to have a total battery life of up to 43 hours. All of these features look good on paper but do they hold up performance-wise? Let's explore that in the review below. OnePlus Buds Pro 3 Design and Features: Compact and classic: Size - 33.60 x 21.15 x 25.00mm (Buds); 64.70 x 52.45 x 25.75mm (Case) Weight - 5.28g (Each Bud); 61.13g (Total with Case) Water and dust resistance - IP55 (Buds only) Colours - Lunar Radiance, Midnight Opus The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 has a comfortable in-ear design with silicone tips. Instead of the usual three silicone tip size options, we get an additional choice. They come in XS, S, M and L sizes and the out-of-the-box medium option fit me the best. The earbuds, with a rounded stem, have a dual-tone finish. Since the earphones allow the slide function, the specific area of the stem that reads the slide command is placed towards the front (when earphones are plugged in). It is marked by a column of tiny horizontal lines that help users identify the spot easily without much of a fumble. Offered in two basic shades of Lunar Radiance (white) and Midnight Opus (black), the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 earphones come in a compact, easy-to-carry-around pebble-shaped case. There is nothing flashy or over-the-top about this product and it shines with the elegance of its simplicity, whether it is in terms of hardware or performance. The charging case comes with a plastic unibody build which sports a leather texture. It may appear to have a vegan leather finish, but it does not. The case does not have an IP rating but the earbuds come with and IP55-rated build. An individual earbud measures 33.60 x 21.15 x 25.00mm in size and weighs 5.28 grams. The case measures 64.70 x 52.45 x 25.75mm in size and together with the earphones, weighs 61.38 grams. Although this is heavier than some other audio wearables in the range, the weight is not considerable and definitely does not impede functionality. OnePlus Buds Pro 3 App and Specifications: Excellent elementary: Driver - 11mm + 6mm Companion App - Hey Melody Gesture controls - Yes (squeeze, slide) Much like the product itself, the layout of the companion Hey Melody app is simple and easy to use. It allows users access to noise cancellation and equalisation settings management. With supported audio formats, you can also access the Spatial Audio feature from this app. It has the Golden Sound feature as well, which with the help of a series of ear canal and hearing tests, offers users a personalised sound experience. You can customise the touch controls on the earphones' stem using the Hey Melody app. Instead of the tap function, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 supports squeeze and slide functions. The different commands include quick squeeze, double squeeze, triple squeeze and squeeze and hold. There is also a slide command, which is defaulted to control volume by sliding a finger up or down the stem. You can also customise the slide command to reflect the “switch track” action or turn off the feature completely. In terms of features, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 get the basics right. Similar to the preceding OnePlus Buds Pro 2 (Review), the newly launched TWS earphones come with 11mm woofers and 6mm tweeters. However, instead of one DAC with dual drivers like in the older model, the Buds Pro 3 get dual DACs. Why is this improvement noteworthy? DAC stands for Digital-to-Analog Converter, which helps convert digital audio information to actual audio signals that we hear. This is integral in the final quality of sound that we experience and the change has made a difference. We will discuss the sound performance of the earbuds shortly. The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 support up to 50dB ANC, 94ms low latency and are claimed to offer a battery life of up to 43 hours. The charging case has a 566mAh battery, while individual earbuds carry 58mAh cells. Only the earbuds come with an IP55 rating for dust and splash resistance. The earphones support Bluetooth 5.4, dual-device connection, Google Fast Pairing and USB Type-C port connectivity. OnePlus Buds Pro 3 Performance and Battery Life: Dulcet and detailed: ANC - 50dB Battery - 58mAh (Bud), 566mAh (Case) Charging - Wired (USB Type-C) and wireless (Qi technology) Bluetooth - 5.4 Other than the on, off, and transparent modes, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 allow users to choose between mild, moderate and max ANC modes as well. With the ANC on, the different modes are meant to deal with varying degrees of disturbances. Additionally, there is a mode to rule them all, the Smart mode, which helps assess the environmental noise level and automatically set the adequate level of noise cancellation. You can otherwise of course switch between the modes using the Hey Melody companion app. However, I did not experience any marked difference among the different ‘on' modes. But the noise cancellation was decent. Apart from a few low-frequency sounds, the earphones managed to mask most environmental disturbances adequately. The sound experience offered by the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 earphones is a harmonic blend of balanced and detailed. You can access a six-band customisable equaliser through the Hey Melody app. Most of the time, the audio output you get is well-rounded and dulcet. You get five Dynaudio-backed EQ presets — Balanced, Bold, Serenade, Bass, and Dynaudio featured. The last one is promised to replicate the sound of Dynaudio speakers with perfectly balanced bass, mids and treble. I don't know if the preset does quite that but it is pleasant nonetheless. The Bold mode highlights the crispier, higher notes and offers a melodious concord with a track like House of The Rising Sun by The Animals. With the Serenade mode, which focuses on vocals, we can feel the soulful, almost raw emotions in songs like Francis Forever by Mitski or Lost On You (Live) by LP. The bass performance of the earphones is good too, with clear, defined sounds and no harsh edges or distortions. Most songs from Light Em Up by Fall Out Boys to Freedom by John Batiste are delightful to listen to in the Bass mode. If you are a fan of stereo mixes, you might be giddy with joy at how pronounced some of the details are with these earphones. For instance, the distinct snares from Dear Prudence by The Beatles seemed to pleasantly poke a certain itch I did not know I had. Alongside AAC and SBC, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 support the lossless LHDC 5.0 audio codec. If used with a LHDC-supported handset, the latter improves sound quality markedly and affects the battery life as well. Connectivity options of the earphones include Bluetooth 5.4, a dual-device connection and they support Google Fast Pairing. You can seamlessly switch between the two paired devices without major lag. The 94ms low latency game mode ensures minimal lag between audio and video output. They also support a clear voice call experience. The battery life of the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 is impressive too. Without ANC, while playing the lossy AAC codec, I got a total playback time of almost 42 hours out of the earphones. With the ANC feature turned on, the total playback time dropped to about 24 hours, which I was more than pleased with, given my arguably more-than-average usage. With the lossless LHDC codec and the Smart ANC mode on, together with the case, these earphones gave me a runtime of a little over 20 hours, 20 hours and 18 minutes to be precise. For the purpose of this review, I maintained a uniform 50 percent volume throughout the testing period. The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 charging case supports USB Type-C charging as well as wireless charging. Using a 15W Qi wireless charger, it took me three hours to charge the case from zero to 100 percent. Meanwhile, using a 67W wired charger, they were charged to completion in an hour. OnePlus Buds Pro 3: Verdict We finally come to the big question. Should you get the OnePlus Buds Pro 3? Priced competitively at Rs. 11,999, these TWS ANC-supported earphones offer a top-notch sound experience. The design is compact and elegant in its simplicity. They can offer an impressive total battery life of almost 43 hours if you keep the ANC off and use the AAC codec. Even running LHDC with ANC on, together with the case, they can last for over 20 hours, which is a good runtime for most casual listeners. If the art of deduction is to be trusted, these audio products have no substantial caveat. So yes, they are a good pick for buyers looking for TWS earphones around Rs. 12,000. However, if you want to explore more options before committing, you can consider the Sennheiser Accentum True Wireless earphones (Review), which support aptX and LC3 audio codecs and are priced in India at Rs. 12,990. https://www.gadgets360.com/audio/reviews/oneplus-buds-pro-3-review-6377216#pfrom=indepth

Windows 11 is getting a new ability with the 24H2 update which means that more than just one app will be able to access the webcam without having to work around this with a fudge. Yes, if you weren’t aware, it’s currently the case for Windows 11 that the OS (and other Windows versions, for that matter) only allows one app access to the camera at any one time. As Windows Latest reports, currently the only way around this is that if there’s a second app that needs to use the webcam at the same time as an initial app which has grabbed the hardware, you can use a virtual camera setup to do so. However, Windows 11 should be able to natively handle multiple apps tapping the webcam simultaneously with a new option in the 24H2 update, as leaker PhantomOfEarth highlighted with a post on X. As you can see, the feature will be in the Camera settings, courtesy of an ‘Advanced camera configuration’ panel that’ll allow the user to enable multi-app camera, which allows multiple apps to simultaneously stream from the camera. Note that this ability is just in testing right now, and it’s hidden in the latest Windows 11 preview in the Dev channel, in fact. Hopefully, it’ll be live soon enough though, and can be tested and run through its paces before full release. Analysis: A throwback of a limitation While multiple apps using the webcam may not be a common scenario for many Windows 11 users, it’s a useful ability that some folks want, and as Microsoft notes in the text for the feature, it’s “designed for the hard-of-hearing community” – so this is yet another useful step forward on the accessibility front, too. (We aren’t sure what scenarios this might be leveraged in, but hopefully when the feature actually goes live in testing, Microsoft will explain in more detail what this does in the usual blog post announcing all the new bits and pieces). You might be wondering why Windows 11 (or previous versions of the OS) doesn’t support multiple webcams anyway? It doesn’t seem like a massive ask, after all. Well, seemingly this is a throwback to past times when hardware wasn’t as beefy as it is today, and sharing the camera between numerous apps could cause system slowdown for lesser PCs. As Windows Latest observes, it seems Microsoft implemented a fundamental rule to prevent this – one app at a time working with the webcam – and just hasn’t changed that in ages. There’s no reason for the restriction now, so it’s (finally) being lifted – at least assuming this change progresses through Windows 11’s testing channels and onto release (and we can’t see why it wouldn’t). There are other slight complications with multiple apps sharing the one webcam, such as image settings like brightness having different parameters demanded by the different apps using the camera. To get around this, Microsoft is having brightness and so forth controlled at a central point in Windows 11’s settings, which overrides any app settings, and that of course fully makes sense. https://www.techradar.com/computing/windows/windows-11-24h2-update-is-set-to-make-a-webcam-change-to-allow-multiple-apps-to-use-the-camera-simultaneously

Arizona-based semiconductor manufacturer Microchip Technology detected a cyberattack against its systems on August 17. The company said in a regulatory filing with the SEC that “the Company determined that an unauthorized party disrupted the Company’s use of certain servers and some business operations.” To address this issue, Microchip had to isolate and shutdown some of the affected systems while investigating the cause of the issue. This inevitably means some disruption to its operations, with manufacturing output falling below normal levels. However, Microchip is still yet to determine the overall scope, nature, and impact of this attack. It also means that Microchip has yet to ascertain how it will affect the company’s bottom line. Microchip Technology did not announce what type of attack hit their systems. There are a few hints that the company was targeted by a ransomware attack, but the company hasn’t given any indication if that is the case. Furthermore, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for it. Aside from its wide-ranging client base, the company is also one of the recipients of the American CHIPS Act payouts, especially as the White House considers it crucial for U.S. national security. But as the global semiconductor race is heating up between two powers — China and the U.S. — resulting in a new chip war that will likely last well into the 21st century, state-sponsored cyberattacks are becoming more and more common. Criminal enterprises are also taking advantage of the increased digitization, targeting massive corporations with ransomware and then asking for millions of dollars just to decrypt their files. Microchip Technology is a major player in the semiconductors industry. It has more than 120,000 customers spread across diverse industries. These include clients in aerospace, automotive, communications, defense, maker and industrial markets. Whatever the cause and impact of the cyberattack on the company is, a reduction in semiconductor output is never a welcome news in the industry. For example, power outages in Taiwan have historically caused global chip prices to rise. Events like this show how fragile the global semiconductor supply chain is, and it will likely take several more years before it becomes more robust against disruptions. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/cyber-security/microchip-technology-suffers-cyberattack-operations-impacted-while-extent-of-attack-is-investigated

People charged with crimes should not be held in a police cell for more than a day under emergency measures to deal with prison overcrowding, a cabinet minister has said. Under Operation Early Dawn, which was triggered on Monday in parts of the north of England and the Midlands, defendants waiting for a court appearance will be kept in police cells until prison space is available. Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens told the BBC the measures would only be in force for "a very short period", typically "a matter of days, or at the most months". The Police Federation has warned police cells are not suitable to hold people for lengthy periods, and it could put pressure on the number of cells available. The prison po[CENSORED]tion has ballooned in recent decades as a result of tougher sentences and court backlogs, with pressure on the system growing since the pandemic. This has been exacerbated by recent riots in parts of England and Northern Ireland, which erupted following the spread of misinformation online after three girls were killed in Southport. More than 1,000 people have been arrested in connection with the violent disorder, whilst 494 people so far have been charged with an offence. As of Friday, the total number of people in prison in England and Wales was 87,893, not far off the current operational capacity of 89,191. Asked about the maximum length of time someone would be held in a police cell rather than being sent to court, Ms Stevens told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Anyone who poses a risk to the public will obviously not be bailed, they will be held in a police station until they're summoned to court and that should be no later than the day after being charged." Phil Jones, custody lead for the Police Federation of England and Wales, said police cells were "not suitable to be used for any great length of time". "Although police officers are highly skilled and trained, they're not prison officers, and prison officers have really specific training around detainee welfare and the needs of prisoners," he told Today. "If we have a sustained period of time where prisoners are in police cells, then there could be a situation moving forward where we don't have the capacity in the system to do business as usual." There have been warnings the emergency measure could clog up police cells and limit the ability to arrest people. However, the National Police Chiefs Council, an umbrella group for senior officers, has insisted police will continue to arrest anyone they need to in order to keep the public safe. Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, someone should be brought before a magistrates' court at the next available sitting after they are charged with an offence, which is usually the same or next day. However, the Law Society, which represents solicitors in England and Wales, has said many magistrates' court cases will be delayed if there must be a prison cell available, impacting victims as well as defendants. 'No wiggle room' Stuart Nolan, chairman of the Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee, said normally it would not be necessary to hold people in a police cell for more than a day after they have been charged, while waiting for a court appearance. However, he said there was "no wiggle room" when it comes to prison capacity, meaning if there was a major incident like the recent violent disorder, it was possible people could be held for longer. Mr Nolan said this could lead to legal challenges, or more people being released on bail rather than being brought quickly before a court. "It has knock-on effects," he said. "If you take up too many cells in your local police station, what do you do with the people you arrest for violent disorder?" More prison spaces are expected to become available in September, when separate measures to release some inmates early come into affect. The Conservative government also had to use emergency measures to ease the pressure on prisons, with Operation Early Dawn last triggered in May. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c86lgng99d0o

A red squirrel has been spotted in the central belt of Scotland in a rare sighting. The squirrel was seen darting along a fence in Lanette Perry's garden in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (SSRS), a project led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, said it was one of the most southerly red squirrel sightings in Scotland's central belt in decades. It said the emergence of the species in the area could be due to conservation efforts. SSRS spokeswoman Katie Berry said: "We cannot say exactly why this pioneering red has turned up in this location - it is perhaps testament to the grey control efforts in areas to the north in recent years, and possibly also as a result of increasing pine marten po[CENSORED]tions in the Central Lowlands." More than 75% of the UK’s remaining red squirrels are found in Scotland, however there are only about 120,000 remaining in Scotland. Their numbers have fallen drastically in recent decades. This is largely due the spread of the invasive non-native grey squirrel, which was first introduced from North America in the late 1800s to decorate the gardens of stately homes. Grey squirrels also carry squirrelpox, a virus that does not harm them but is deadly to reds. The destruction of woodland has also contributed to the red squirrel’s decline. SSRS, which is supported by the Scottish government’s Nature Restoration Fund, is monitoring squirrel numbers across Scotland, managing the impact of squirrelpox, and helping to combat the spread of grey squirrels in key strategic areas. It says the introduction of pine martens could also have had an impact on squirrel numbers as it is believed they prey on grey squirrels more than reds. The group has appealed to anyone who sees red or grey squirrels to report any sightings to them and submit photographs if possible. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp3dkr7gv69o

Atletico Madrid have signed England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of £33m. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish top-flight club. Gallagher joined Chelsea at the age of six and went on to make 90 appearances, scoring 10 goals. He had entered the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge so Chelsea wanted to sell now to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer. "To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true," Gallagher wrote on Instagram. "It's been an absolute honour every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions. "I loved every moment. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans." Atletico forward Joao Felix, also 24, is set to move in the other direction after Chelsea agreed a fee in principle for the Portugal international. Felix scored four goals in 20 appearances during a loan spell in west London in 2023. The collapse of Chelsea's talks to sign Atletico striker Samu Omorodion had delayed Gallagher's move to Spain, but the Felix deal frees up the required funds for Atletico to complete the transfer. Gallagher spent five days in a hotel in Madrid earlier this month expecting a deal before flying back to London when the move stalled. Gallagher had loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace before breaking into the Chelsea first team at the start of the 2022-23 season. He has won 18 England caps since making his debut in 2021 and was part of the Three Lions squads for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. 'Positive end to strange transfer saga' - analysis Conor Gallagher's exit will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of some match-going Chelsea supporters who absolutely adored him. They held up a banner in the match against Tottenham, a club many thought he might join, in May in protest of his expected departure. That exit has happened, but a crumb of comfort is that Chelsea have sold him outside the Premier League to Atletico Madrid in Spain, avoiding the kind of pain some fans still feel when watching Mason Mount line up for Manchester United. Chelsea have also handled his departure well by putting together an emotive video package that highlights his bond with the club and wishing him well for the future on all their channels. It reads and feels like a celebration of the career of the boyhood Chelsea fan, who has been with the club since the age of six, as he departs for Wanda Metropolitano. It's a positive end to a strange transfer saga which saw Gallagher training alone at Cobham in limbo as the two clubs tried to pull off a bizarre swap deal. Gallagher will again be able to focus on his football and could be a good fit for Diego Simeone's dogged, high energy and physical style of play. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cx2g77n815go

The daughter of one of the six Israeli hostages whose bodies were brought back from Gaza by Israel’s military on Tuesday has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of putting “political priorities” ahead of a ceasefire and hostage release deal. Inbal Albini Peri told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that her 80-year-old father Chaim and his friends would have been among the first people freed under any agreement with Hamas and that they “should have come back alive”. Mr Netanyahu has insisted he is making every effort to bring back all of the remaining hostages kidnapped during Hamas’s 7 October attack. But Ms Albini Peri said: “I don’t believe a word he is saying.” “I want him to say to my family and all the other families: ‘I’m sorry. I was wrong." In her interview, Ms Peri did not explicitly explain what she meant by "political priorities". Mr Netanyahu's far-right allies have vowed to pull out of his coalition, undermining his chances of staying in power, if he agrees to release large numbers of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails in return for hostages. On Tuesday evening, a senior US administration official criticised the prime minister for making what they called “maximalist statements” that were “not constructive to getting a ceasefire deal across the finish line”. It followed reported comments by Mr Netanyahu suggesting he had told the US secretary of state that Israeli forces must stay in strategic parts of Gaza, which Hamas rejects. The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. More than 40,170 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. A deal agreed in November saw Hamas release 105 of the hostages in return for a week-long ceasefire and the freeing of some 240 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Israel says 105 hostages are still being held, 34 of whom are presumed dead. Chaim Peri lived in Kibbutz Nir Oz, which was one of the 26 communities and towns close to the Gaza perimeter fence targeted by Hamas on 7 October. The film lecturer and lifelong peace activist was abducted after he voluntarily left the saferoom of his home to protect his wife, Osnat, who was hiding inside. His 34-year-old son, Danny Darlington, was also killed in the attack. In December, Hamas’s military wing released a video showing Mr Peri along with two other elderly hostages from Nir Oz - Yoram Metzger and Amiram Cooper. Mr Peri could be seen addressing the camera and calling for their release. “That is more or less the last that we heard from him. Now we know that he probably died around February,” Inbal Peri told the BBC. In June, the Israeli military informed the family that Mr Peri, Mr Metzger, Mr Cooper and British-Israeli Nadav Popplewell had been killed during an operation in the Khan Younis area, in southern Gaza, citing intelligence it had gathered. On Tuesday morning, Ms Peri was told that Israeli troops had recovered the bodies of her father and five other hostages - Mr Metzger, Mr Popplewell, Alexander Dancyg, Avraham Munder and Yagev Buchshtab - from underground tunnels in Khan Younis. “For my family it’s maybe a small closure. It’s not the right word to say ‘happy’, but for us it is the end of the way and we are burying our father in the place that he loved so much,” she said. “But there are other hostages that are still alive, and the chances that will come back alive are getting smaller.” Ms Peri said she believed that her father and his friends from Nir Oz also should have come home alive as part of a new hostage release deal, which the US, Qatar and Egypt were trying to broker before her father was thought to have died and are continuing to do now. “It only depended on our government and the mental standing of our prime minister, who had different priorities. He had political priorities. And that makes us very, very angry and frustrated. “I’m not saying that we could really stop the war, but we had to do the negotiations instead of keeping on fighting. We have seen for over 10 months that it’s not working.” When asked if she had put this directly to Mr Netanyahu or other members of his government, she replied: “Many people from the government did talk to us and try to help. But when the head is wrong, it doesn’t matter.” She added: “We want our government and our prime minister to go ahead and have a deal, to have something to talk about, instead of risking over and over again our soldiers to bring back bodies. We don’t want any more soldiers to be killed.” “Bring back all the hostages because they are still alive. And their time is really running out.” On Tuesday night, Mr Netanyahu’s office said he had told hostages’ families in Jerusalem that “the first thing is to eliminate Hama and achieve victory”. “The second thing is that we are, at the same time, making an effort to return the hostages, on terms that will allow for the maximum number of hostages being released in the first stage of the deal. I say this clearly: This is an objective that I have set,” he added. “However, the other thing is to preserve our strategic security assets in the face of major domestic and foreign pressure, and we are doing so." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjdkyyn1lr4o

A scheme to check on police dog welfare has been rolled out in Wiltshire after a successful pilot in the north of England. The Animal Welfare Scheme (AWS) involves volunteers visiting to check on the dogs in their police kennels, vehicles and the dog unit's training areas. The volunteers will check on them every month to six weeks, and have said that, so far, they have not come across any problems with the "well cared for" animals. Sgt Jon Harwood, from Wiltshire Police's dog unit, said he "welcomed" the scheme, adding: "It's a nice opportunity for us to show off what we can do". He explained that the scheme will benefit the force and is an "opportunity to learn from other areas". The Animal Welfare Scheme was set up as a result of a review of dog training after the death of Acer, a police dog, in 1997. After being successfully piloted by Lancashire Police, the scheme is now being rolled out in Wiltshire. Sgt Harwood said that at the moment the main concern would be the environment day-to-day, like hot weather and dangerous circumstances. "Ultimately we are in charge of that dog," he said. "We don't deploy them if it's not safe." One thing the force is now considering is a shaded area for the specialist cars that carry the dogs, so that they are not so reliant on inefficient air conditioning. Lesley Peters and Jo Piddock have been chosen as volunteers for the scheme in Wiltshire because of their experience with dogs. Ms Peters has been training dogs since she was a teenager and has worked with police and security, while Ms Piddock does agility and scent work with the animals. The dog training and work is reward-based - and when they have done a job, they get their ball. Dog handlers take their canine partners home with them, where they have special kennels and runs set up. "You can tell by the way the dog is behaving if it's actually happy in the work it's doing," said Ms Piddock. "Everything is great. The dogs are working well, they're well cared for, they're transported well." The pair said they do not have any concerns about Wiltshire Police dogs currently and said there is "positive handling". "There is no forcing the dog to do it - it does it because it wants to or through play," explained Ms Peters. "As long as the dog is happy, they will work for you." The scheme has been implemented by the Police and Crime Commissioner and the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) with support from the Dogs Trust https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cxe2v9jj9nmo

England defender Luke Shaw says he is fit and ready to play 90 minutes if needed at Euro 2024. Shaw, the only specialist left-back in Gareth Southgate’s squad, did not play in England’s first four matches of the Euros because of a hamstring injury. But the Manchester United defender came on as a second-half substitute during the quarter-final victory over Switzerland and says he is now ready to play a bigger part in England’s campaign. "Of course, I think I am [fit and ready to play 90 minutes],” Shaw said. “That is down to Gareth's decision. I feel fit and ready to go." Shaw’s appearance from the bench after 78 minutes against Switzerland marked his first competitive football since suffering his injury in February. Southgate had hoped to have Shaw back during the group stage in Germany, but his recovery took longer than expected and has meant Kieran Trippier deputising on the left side of defence. "The last four months have been really tough,” Shaw said of his injury problems. “At the start I was expected to come back a lot sooner, but I went through a lot of setbacks. “It was really nice to get on the other night and get some minutes - I've been itching. "I think before the squad got announced, we had a plan to come back around the second or third game but, unfortunately, things didn't go as planned and I was pushed back a game or so. "Of course, it's tough. They were really there for me, not just Gareth and Steve [Holland, England assistant manager] but the medical staff as well. I have a lot to thank them for." Shaw has had 'strange' Euros Shaw has had to sit and watch from the sidelines as England reached the semi-finals of a second successive European Championship. The 28-year-old has been focusing on his recovery, to the extent that he pulled out of a scheduled media conference before the Switzerland game as he did not want to speak to the press before he had got back on the field of play. "It's been strange,” he said of his Euro 2024 experience. “It's also been difficult as well, going to games, feeling the atmosphere. Not putting the shirt on or being involved in games was hard, but that motivated me more to work back. "The atmosphere in those games spurred me on. "I was of course excited to come back, but the priority was to help us get back into the game and get us through." Without Shaw, England have not always impressed at Euro 2024 – drawing their final two group matches before going behind in both knockout games so far. But brilliant equalisers by Jude Bellingham against Slovakia and Bukayo Saka versus Switzerland have helped them through. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c728j0vg54lo

No oven? No problem! Arizona park rangers redefined “sun-baked” after cooking banana bread atop their dashboard amid the sweltering triple-digit heat wave scorching the US since late last month. “It’s that time of year again! Cooking in the car, cue theme music!” wrote officials with the Saguaro National Park by Tucson, where they performed the unorthodox cooking tutorial, as detailed in a Facebook post. According to the post, they put the loaves on at around 11 a.m. on June 28, when the mercury had hit 97 degrees, which meant the dashboard clocked in at a searing 163 degrees. Fast forward to 2 p.m., and the outside and dashboard temps had reached 105 and 211 degrees, respectively — the latter being the equivalent of a “cool oven temperature.” At that point, the tops of the chocolate-freckled bread turned golden, per the car-beque pics. By the time the rangers took this desert dessert out of the car at around 3 p.m., the confection’s exterior had been browned, although it was still a “bit squishy on the inside,” per the post. Having tried the experiment on other foods, the rangers deduced that cookies were “the most ideal option” for a solar oven on wheels. This car cooking method is also likely more effective — albeit messy — for frying eggs than the much-disputed sidewalk method, whose success is possible but unlikely given that walkways tend to only reach 145 degrees (eggs fully cook at 158 degrees). Viewers were impressed with the cooking tutorial, with one fan writing, “I bet it smells amazing in the car.” “When is the dashboard cookbook coming out?” wrote another. https://nypost.com/2024/07/08/lifestyle/park-rangers-bake-banana-bread-in-car-amid-105-degree-heat-see-how-it-turned-out/

Palestinians in Gaza City say they have experienced one of the most intense Israeli bombardments since Israel launched its war on Hamas after the group's unprecedented 7 October attack. Columns of Israeli tanks are reported to be closing in on the centre of the city from several different directions. The Gaza Civil Emergency Service says it believes a number of people have been killed but has so far been unable to reach them because of fighting in several districts in the east and west of Gaza City. The Al-Ahli Baptist hospital is reported to have been evacuated, with its patients being taken to one of the only medical facilities still functioning in the area - the already overcrowded Indonesian hospital. Meanwhile, a senior Palestinian official has told the BBC that indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel on a ceasefire and hostage release deal are expected to resume in Qatar within 48 hours. A preliminary meeting would take place in Egypt on Monday between US, Israeli and Egyptian intelligence chiefs, the official said. Ahead of the assault in Gaza City, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued evacuation orders for several neighbourhoods in the centre, including Tuffah, Daraj and the Old City. But one of the areas that has come under the most intense assault, Tel al-Hawa, was not included in the evacuation order that was posted online with a map by the IDF Arabic spokesperson on Sunday. On Monday afternoon, the IDF issued a new order that covered Tel al-Hawa as well as the Sabra and al-Rimal areas, to the north and west. One resident of Gaza City, Abdel Ghani asked: "The enemy is behind us and the sea is in front of us, where shall we go?" Others have also told the BBC that they do not know where to go. They say that only one route remains - to go north towards the port area of Gaza City. Some fled districts after receiving an evacuation order, only to find that the area they moved to was coming under Israeli bombardment. In al-Rimal, a freelance cameraman working for the BBC says that he did not receive any evacuation orders, but later learnt that his neighbour did. He left the area with his family and headed north. They are now in the port area but lack basic necessities. He says he is struggling to find water for his children. In a statement, the IDF confirmed that it launched what it called a new operation in Tel al-Halwa overnight, following what it said was intelligence of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad infrastructure and fighters in the area. The military also said that it was operating at the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, in the area. The IDF said that at the start of the operation, it gave warnings to civilians - and it said that it would open up a humanitarian corridor for people to leave the area. The latest Israeli offensive in Gaza comes as hopes have been rising that a ceasefire deal might finally be agreed. A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks has told the BBC that indirect negotiations between the Hamas and Israeli negotiating teams, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, will start in Doha within the next 48 hours. The official also said a preparatory meeting was due to take place in Cairo on Monday between CIA director William Burns, the head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, David Barnea, and the head of Egyptian Intelligence, Abbas Kamel. The three intelligence chiefs are then all due to travel to Doha on Tuesday. The official outlined to the BBC several key sticking points from the Hamas perspective: Hamas wants Israeli forces to withdraw from both the Rafah crossing with Egypt and the Philadelphi corridor, a strip of land running along the Egyptian border Israel has vetoed Hamas’s demand for release from Israeli prisons of 100 senior figures from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Fatah political factions Hamas’s negotiating team has already dropped its requirement for Israel to accept a permanent ceasefire as a precondition for any potential deal. The official said the negotiating process would be very long and complex, but that there was some degree of hope that it might work this time. On Sunday, a statement by the office of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, may have somewhat dampened expectations by insisting that any deal must not stop Israel from resuming fighting in Gaza until its war objectives are met. Mr Netanyahu has repeatedly defined those aims as being the eradication of Hamas, both militarily and politically. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c51yle4m5pzo
