Motorola seems to be gearing up to unveil the Motorola Edge 50 Neo on August 29. As we wait for the official launch, the upcoming Edge series phone has surfaced on the Geekbench benchmarking site. The Motorola Edge 50 Neo is shown to run on an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 7300 SoC, paired with 8GB RAM. A separate Geekbench listing of a ThinkPhone 25 suggests that Motorola may rebadge the Edge 50 Neo with Lenovo branding. Motorola Edge 50 Neo Listed on Geekbench The unannounced Motorola Edge 50 Neo was spotted on the Geekbench website on Thursday, August 22. The listing indicates that it will ship with Android 14. The phone got 1,055 points in single-core and 3,060 points in multi-core testing. As per the listing, the handset could get 7.26GB of RAM, this may point towards an 8GB RAM variant. An octa-core chipset with the codename Vienna will power the Motorola Edge 50 Neo. It has four cores capped at 2.50GHz and four with a 2.00GHz peak frequency. These CPU speeds are associated with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset. Meanwhile, a separate listing of the Lenovo ThinkPhone 25 by Motorola also popped up on the benchmarking website. The listing suggests the same Vienna chipset, 7.26GB RAM, and overall performance results for the device. It has managed to score 1,039 in the single-core test and 2,833 in the multi-core testing. This scorecard indicates that Motorola may rebadge the phone under its parent Lenovo brand. Motorola Edge 50 Neo Specifications (Expected) Earlier this week Motorola teased the launch of a new smartphone on August 29, which could be the Edge 50 Neo. It is expected to come in Pantone nautical blue, Pantone latte, Pantone poinciana, and Pantone grisaille colour options. The Motorola Edge 50 Neo was recently spotted on a few European retailer websites with a 6.4-inch pOLED (1,220x2,670 pixels) 120Hz display, Android 14, and MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset. It is expected to carry a triple rear camera unit comprising a 50-megapixel Sony LYT700C primary sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor. For selfies, it is likely to feature a 32-megapixel front camera. The handset may pack a 4,310mAh battery with 68W fast charging support https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/motorola-edge-50-neo-lenovo-thinkphone-25-geekbench-listing-rebrand-specifications-6401431#pfrom=topstory

Windows 11 can be installed on PCs that don’t meet the hardware requirements of the OS by using a few different workarounds, but one of those fudges no longer works – or at least Microsoft appears to have closed this loophole in testing. The Register reports that as highlighted by Bob Pony on X, the bypass that Microsoft apparently intends to block, known as the ‘setup.exe /product server’ workaround, has indeed been vanquished in preview build 27686 in the Canary channel (released a week ago). What this particular requirement-dodging measure does is to trick the installer into thinking it is setting up Windows Server, when it is in fact installing Windows 11. As Windows Server doesn’t have the same stricter requirements – for example, you don’t need TPM 2.0 – this sneaky installation method will work on a PC that doesn’t officially qualify for Windows 11. Whether it will run properly on such a PC is entirely another matter, and that’s why we wouldn’t recommend using a trick along these lines. That said, people do use this, and other fudges, to install Windows 11 on hardware that is older and not officially compatible, and they manage to run it okay – but it’s a risk, obviously. Analysis: A bug, maybe? It seems unlikely… As The Register points out, it is possible that this is just a bug in the Windows 11 preview build. After all, this is the Canary channel, the earliest testing platform which is more bug-ridden than other builds. However, it’s more probable that this is an intentional move by Microsoft, we’d guess. That being the case, folks do still have time to use the above fudge to install Windows 11, because as Bob Pony makes clear, it still works fine with Windows 11 24H2 (the incoming update expected to land later in the year). This is seemingly a change for Windows 11 in 2025 – but we don’t know for sure, and Microsoft could still be planning on incorporating it in the 24H2 update (it just isn’t in the mix yet). unsupported PC is to use the utility Rufus. So, there are still options out there, although Microsoft is seemingly looking to close these kind of tricks down – perhaps due to the fact that Windows 10 comes to its End of Life next year. Whatever the case, we should underline that we wouldn’t recommend installing any operating system on a device that doesn’t officially support it – at least not for the average user out there, anyway. https://www.techradar.com/computing/windows/microsoft-just-blocked-a-commonly-used-trick-to-install-windows-11-on-a-pc-that-doesnt-meet-the-system-requirements

Lip-Bu Tan, a seasoned figure in the high-tech industry, has stepped down from Intel's board of directors after two years of service, according to the company's filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. His departure, effective immediately, comes at a critical time for Intel as the company faces financial difficulties and implements major organizational changes that involve laying off some 15,000 or more employees. "I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Intel Board of Directors," said Lip-Bu Tan after informing Intel about his decision on Monday. "This is a personal decision based on a need to reprioritize various commitments and I remain supportive of the company and its important work." SeekingAlpha reports that Intel's stock dropped 6.1% following Intel's announcement of Lip-Bu Tan's departure. Lip-Bu Tan, a former CEO and the current executive chairman of Cadence, a leading supplier of electronic design automation tools and IP, joined Intel's board of directors in 2022 after the company announced its IDM 2.0 efforts to become a significant contract maker of semiconductors. Lip-Bu Tan's investment company, Walden International, has invested in semiconductor, alternative energy, and digital media companies and startups in the U.S. and Asia, including Ambarella, Creative Technology, S3 Graphics, and Sina Corp. Sina owns Weibo (a microblogging site in China) and four other business lines. Given Lip-Bu Tan's experience at Cadence and his investment company, he was a treasured board member at Intel. Intel's board has 12 directors, led by chairman Frank D. Yeary, who spent his entire career in the financial industry. In fact, among the board of directors of Intel, two have an academic background in electrical and computer engineering and experience in a semiconductor company; one has worked in the PC industry; and two—Pat Gelsinger and Stacy Smith—are either existing or former executives at Intel. Others have worked outside of the semiconductor industry. Intel's stock tumbled by about 30%, erasing around $39 billion in market capitalization in just a few days, from late July to early August. On July 31, Intel's market cap was $130.86 billion at the close of the NYSE. After reports of massive layoffs, it dropped to $123.96 billion on August 1. Following Intel's financial report and a substantial $1.6 billion loss, the valuation fell further to $91.86 billion. Intel's current market cap at press time is $88.43 billion, highlighting that the company has lost over half its market value since the beginning of the year. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/high-tech-industry-legend-leaves-intel-board-intels-stock-dropped-6-since-the-announcement

The judiciary has asked magistrates' courts to delay sending some criminals to prison in the coming weeks because of the unprecedented overcrowding crisis. The direction to court managers comes as officials battle daily to find cells for offenders, ahead of a new release strategy in September. In the instruction, a senior judge urged court managers to delay the sentencing of some offenders if they are likely to be jailed, but are currently on bail. Official figures show that the number of prison beds available across England and Wales has fallen to the point where there are now only a few available in each institution. As of Friday morning, there were 88,234 people in jails. The po[CENSORED]tion had risen by 738 the past fortnight, leaving about 1,100 spare beds. Many of the new inmates are either convicted rioters or suspects being held on remand before facing trial for their alleged part in disorder that occurred across England and Northern Ireland in late July and early August. The direction to magistrates' courts managers, sent on Wednesday, came from Lord Justice Green, a senior judge who overseas the workload of the courts. He asked local officials to carefully consider how they were scheduling cases ahead of the Ministry of Justice’s plan for more early releases, which is set to come into force on 10 September. The judge wrote that local court managers should review all cases listed for sentence up to and including 6 September where the defendant is currently on bail. If a jail sentence is a possible outcome, consideration should be given to rescheduling the hearing as soon as possible, but not earlier than 10 September. “The following direction is made in the context of the current challenges in our prisons,” wrote the judge. "Every case must be considered on an individual basis and decisions must be made on the basis of the interests of justice. It follows that this needs to be a careful process.” The wording of the direction is not a blanket order to delay the sentencing of every offender who may be jailed - and it only affects those who would face a maximum of six months - but it is the second emergency measure in a week aimed at managing the crisis in jails. On Monday, the government asked police in northern England and most of the midlands to keep newly-charged suspects waiting for a court appearance in police cells until prison space is available. From 10 September, some offenders will be released on a licence after serving 40% of their sentences in prison. That plan aims to free up several thousand cells, but it is no longer clear if it will be enough because of all the additional offenders and suspects related to the riots. Tom Franklin, head of the Magistrates’ Association, said the direction to local courts was “another sticking plaster”. “This latest emergency measure – while it may be necessary to deal with prison overcrowding until the big release of prisoners on 10 September – demonstrates the need for an injection of more resources at every stage of the justice process,” he said. “We also need a grown-up discussion about the purpose of prison, and indeed other types of sentences such as community sentences.” https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y586gg147o

Two new rhinos have arrived at a safari park as another member of the herd prepares to leave. Granville, a five-year-old male, moved to Woburn Safari Park, Bedfordshire, on 20 August and three-year-old female Azeeza arrived later that day from Safari Zoo Cumbria. But the keepers are preparing to say goodbye to Bonnie, Granville's aunt and a "much loved" member of the herd, who is moving to West Midlands Safari Park. Keeper Zack Turner said: "It's always sad to see any of our animals go, especially Bonnie. She's a great rhino to work with and has so much personality." "Although it's sad to see her go, the chance to hopefully have a breeding group of rhino, with the introduction of Granville, is something that excites us all," he added. To ensure a smooth transition for Bonnie, the safari park keepers have spent training time with her, making sure she feels comfortable and at ease for her journey. The process has involved using the crate as a tunnel between the house and the sand yard, which has helped her become familiar and comfortable with it in the weeks leading up to the move. Southern white rhinos are classified as "near threatened" due to poaching and habitat loss in the wild. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpdl9v3z4leo

George Russell set the pace as Mercedes and McLaren both headed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in Friday practice at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was 0.061 seconds quicker than McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton third, 0.111secs off the pace, and the second McLaren of Lando Norris fourth. Championship leader Verstappen was only fifth fastest, 0.284secs off the pace, and team-mate Sergio Perez down in 11th. Fernando Alonso was sixth fastest, ahead of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Williams’ Alex Albon completed the top 10. After the first session started in wet conditions before drying, the second was held in sunny weather, although the strong, blustery wind continued, leading to a number of drivers to run wide at the first corner, because of a strong tail wind down the pit straight. But there was only one crash - Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg spinning on entry to Tarzan, skidding across the gravel trap and ending up in the barriers to bring out the red flag for a few minutes. On race pace, Norris was in impressive form in the McLaren, which has its first performance upgrade since the Miami Grand Prix in May. Norris led the way on the medium tyres, appearing on first impressions of lap times comfortably quicker than both Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc. On the soft tyre, Russell led the way on race pace, a fair bit quicker than Piastri. Red Bull also have an upgrade as Verstappen seeks his first win since the Spanish Grand Prix in mid-June, six races ago. In the first session, Norris was 0.201 seconds faster than Verstappen, with Hamilton third fastest, his fastest lap time affected by traffic. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, on medium-compound tyres rather than the soft used by those ahead of him, was fourth. The Spaniard’s running in the second session was curtailed by a gearbox problem after just seven laps. https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/articles/cd9dygx2lwlo

This controversial style is making the cut for the hottest hairstyle of the year. The mini mullet — a short, textured style described as having a “’70s/’80s rockstar vibe” — is shaping up to be one of the most po[CENSORED]r haircuts among the hunks of Hollywood and their Gen Z admirers on social media. Paul Mescal — a master of minis from mullets to shorts — has adopted the more subdued version of the “business in the front, party in the back” look as part of his signature style. Meanwhile, actors Jacob Elordi and Austin Butler have started rocking the cut, and Harry Styles’ new summer look has drummed up buzz among fans who swooned over his tresses. In Tinseltown, the proliferation of the updated mullet — a traditionally controversial and oft-ridiculed cut once associated with a rebellious edginess — has spurred a larger trend at barbershops around the world, as customers clamor for the hottest new ‘do. In the UK, Club 13 owner Ryan Lewis told The Independent that one-third of his clients request much-maligned mullets, while Bristol barber James Doyle has seen the style spread beyond “musicians and creatives” to accountants and beyond. In addition to the cool factor of a mini mullet, the style is also po[CENSORED]r among the ladies. One anonymous woman, who was named under the pseudonym Mia, said she’s a fan of “guys with mullets,” telling GQ they’re “funny and naughty.” “A mullet kinda says that they’re confident, and down with the times. And probably fun. And probably a bit cheeky,” 27-year-old Sally, who declined to provide her last name, told the outlet. Meanwhile, 26-year-old Megan, who did not provide her last name to GQ, said a mullet is a “signpost that you’re not … well, basic.” The po[CENSORED]rity of the cut has even tempted celebrity hairstylist Halley Brisker to try it himself, although he’s refrained. https://nypost.com/2024/08/23/lifestyle/gen-z-guys-are-crazy-about-the-mini-mullet-and-these-celebs-are-making-cheeky-cut-cool-again/

A 10-month-old baby has been partially paralysed after contracting polio in Gaza, United Nations officials have said. According to the UN, Gaza, now in its 11th month of war, has not registered a polio case for 25 years, although type 2 poliovirus was detected in samples collected from the territory’s wastewater in June. The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said he is "gravely concerned" and confirmed that efforts are under way to roll out a vaccination programme in the coming weeks. The 10-month-old, who was unvaccinated, is said to be in a stable condition after developing paralysis in one leg. Poliovirus, most often spread through sewage and contaminated water, is highly infectious. It can cause disfigurement and paralysis, and is potentially fatal. It mainly affects children under the age of five. Humanitarian groups have blamed the re-emergence of polio in Gaza on disruption to child vaccination programmes and massive damage to water and sanitation systems caused by the war. In order to try to contain the spread, the UN has been pressing for a week-long pause in fighting to carry out a polio vaccination campaign for more than 640,000 children under the age of 10. UN Secretary General António Guterres said "hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza [are] at risk". He said that for the campaign to be successful, transport of vaccines and required equipment would need to be facilitated, as well as the entry of polio experts into Gaza. Adequate fuel, increased flow of cash, reliable communications and the ensured safety of both health workers and people reaching health facilities were also needed, he said. WHO has approved the release of 1.6 million doses of vaccine, UNICEF is coordinating their delivery along with cold storage units and UNRWA’s medical teams will administer the vaccines once they arrive in Gaza. UNICEF’s Executive Director Catherine Russel said that the re-emergence of the virus in the strip after 25 years is "another sobering reminder of how chaotic, desperate and dangerous the situation has become". On 18 August, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said since the beginning of the war, 282,126 vials of the polio vaccine, sufficient for 2,821,260 doses, have been sent to Gaza. It said in the coming weeks, an additional 60,000 vaccines will be delivered to vaccinate over one million children. According to the IDF, entry to the Gaza Strip for vaccines and epidemic prevention is being facilitated by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), "This includes the entry of medical teams and vaccines against the polio virus," the IDF said. Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October by Hamas gunmen, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. More than 40,265 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry, which does not give details of civilian and combatant deaths. The UN human rights office says most of those killed were women and children. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cevjz7zreyxo

OnePlus Buds Pro 3 true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones have been launched in India. These audio wearables, priced at Rs. 11,999, sport dual drivers which include 11mm woofers and 6mm tweeters. They support up to 50dB of active noise cancellation (ANC), LHDC 5.0 audio codec and dual-device connectivity. Just the earbuds come with an IP55 rating and they support the slide touch control function. The earphones are claimed to have a total battery life of up to 43 hours. All of these features look good on paper but do they hold up performance-wise? Let's explore that in the review below. OnePlus Buds Pro 3 Design and Features: Compact and classic: Size - 33.60 x 21.15 x 25.00mm (Buds); 64.70 x 52.45 x 25.75mm (Case) Weight - 5.28g (Each Bud); 61.13g (Total with Case) Water and dust resistance - IP55 (Buds only) Colours - Lunar Radiance, Midnight Opus The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 has a comfortable in-ear design with silicone tips. Instead of the usual three silicone tip size options, we get an additional choice. They come in XS, S, M and L sizes and the out-of-the-box medium option fit me the best. The earbuds, with a rounded stem, have a dual-tone finish. Since the earphones allow the slide function, the specific area of the stem that reads the slide command is placed towards the front (when earphones are plugged in). It is marked by a column of tiny horizontal lines that help users identify the spot easily without much of a fumble. Offered in two basic shades of Lunar Radiance (white) and Midnight Opus (black), the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 earphones come in a compact, easy-to-carry-around pebble-shaped case. There is nothing flashy or over-the-top about this product and it shines with the elegance of its simplicity, whether it is in terms of hardware or performance. The charging case comes with a plastic unibody build which sports a leather texture. It may appear to have a vegan leather finish, but it does not. The case does not have an IP rating but the earbuds come with and IP55-rated build. An individual earbud measures 33.60 x 21.15 x 25.00mm in size and weighs 5.28 grams. The case measures 64.70 x 52.45 x 25.75mm in size and together with the earphones, weighs 61.38 grams. Although this is heavier than some other audio wearables in the range, the weight is not considerable and definitely does not impede functionality. OnePlus Buds Pro 3 App and Specifications: Excellent elementary: Driver - 11mm + 6mm Companion App - Hey Melody Gesture controls - Yes (squeeze, slide) Much like the product itself, the layout of the companion Hey Melody app is simple and easy to use. It allows users access to noise cancellation and equalisation settings management. With supported audio formats, you can also access the Spatial Audio feature from this app. It has the Golden Sound feature as well, which with the help of a series of ear canal and hearing tests, offers users a personalised sound experience. You can customise the touch controls on the earphones' stem using the Hey Melody app. Instead of the tap function, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 supports squeeze and slide functions. The different commands include quick squeeze, double squeeze, triple squeeze and squeeze and hold. There is also a slide command, which is defaulted to control volume by sliding a finger up or down the stem. You can also customise the slide command to reflect the “switch track” action or turn off the feature completely. In terms of features, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 get the basics right. Similar to the preceding OnePlus Buds Pro 2 (Review), the newly launched TWS earphones come with 11mm woofers and 6mm tweeters. However, instead of one DAC with dual drivers like in the older model, the Buds Pro 3 get dual DACs. Why is this improvement noteworthy? DAC stands for Digital-to-Analog Converter, which helps convert digital audio information to actual audio signals that we hear. This is integral in the final quality of sound that we experience and the change has made a difference. We will discuss the sound performance of the earbuds shortly. The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 support up to 50dB ANC, 94ms low latency and are claimed to offer a battery life of up to 43 hours. The charging case has a 566mAh battery, while individual earbuds carry 58mAh cells. Only the earbuds come with an IP55 rating for dust and splash resistance. The earphones support Bluetooth 5.4, dual-device connection, Google Fast Pairing and USB Type-C port connectivity. OnePlus Buds Pro 3 Performance and Battery Life: Dulcet and detailed: ANC - 50dB Battery - 58mAh (Bud), 566mAh (Case) Charging - Wired (USB Type-C) and wireless (Qi technology) Bluetooth - 5.4 Other than the on, off, and transparent modes, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 allow users to choose between mild, moderate and max ANC modes as well. With the ANC on, the different modes are meant to deal with varying degrees of disturbances. Additionally, there is a mode to rule them all, the Smart mode, which helps assess the environmental noise level and automatically set the adequate level of noise cancellation. You can otherwise of course switch between the modes using the Hey Melody companion app. However, I did not experience any marked difference among the different ‘on' modes. But the noise cancellation was decent. Apart from a few low-frequency sounds, the earphones managed to mask most environmental disturbances adequately. The sound experience offered by the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 earphones is a harmonic blend of balanced and detailed. You can access a six-band customisable equaliser through the Hey Melody app. Most of the time, the audio output you get is well-rounded and dulcet. You get five Dynaudio-backed EQ presets — Balanced, Bold, Serenade, Bass, and Dynaudio featured. The last one is promised to replicate the sound of Dynaudio speakers with perfectly balanced bass, mids and treble. I don't know if the preset does quite that but it is pleasant nonetheless. The Bold mode highlights the crispier, higher notes and offers a melodious concord with a track like House of The Rising Sun by The Animals. With the Serenade mode, which focuses on vocals, we can feel the soulful, almost raw emotions in songs like Francis Forever by Mitski or Lost On You (Live) by LP. The bass performance of the earphones is good too, with clear, defined sounds and no harsh edges or distortions. Most songs from Light Em Up by Fall Out Boys to Freedom by John Batiste are delightful to listen to in the Bass mode. If you are a fan of stereo mixes, you might be giddy with joy at how pronounced some of the details are with these earphones. For instance, the distinct snares from Dear Prudence by The Beatles seemed to pleasantly poke a certain itch I did not know I had. Alongside AAC and SBC, the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 support the lossless LHDC 5.0 audio codec. If used with a LHDC-supported handset, the latter improves sound quality markedly and affects the battery life as well. Connectivity options of the earphones include Bluetooth 5.4, a dual-device connection and they support Google Fast Pairing. You can seamlessly switch between the two paired devices without major lag. The 94ms low latency game mode ensures minimal lag between audio and video output. They also support a clear voice call experience. The battery life of the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 is impressive too. Without ANC, while playing the lossy AAC codec, I got a total playback time of almost 42 hours out of the earphones. With the ANC feature turned on, the total playback time dropped to about 24 hours, which I was more than pleased with, given my arguably more-than-average usage. With the lossless LHDC codec and the Smart ANC mode on, together with the case, these earphones gave me a runtime of a little over 20 hours, 20 hours and 18 minutes to be precise. For the purpose of this review, I maintained a uniform 50 percent volume throughout the testing period. The OnePlus Buds Pro 3 charging case supports USB Type-C charging as well as wireless charging. Using a 15W Qi wireless charger, it took me three hours to charge the case from zero to 100 percent. Meanwhile, using a 67W wired charger, they were charged to completion in an hour. OnePlus Buds Pro 3: Verdict We finally come to the big question. Should you get the OnePlus Buds Pro 3? Priced competitively at Rs. 11,999, these TWS ANC-supported earphones offer a top-notch sound experience. The design is compact and elegant in its simplicity. They can offer an impressive total battery life of almost 43 hours if you keep the ANC off and use the AAC codec. Even running LHDC with ANC on, together with the case, they can last for over 20 hours, which is a good runtime for most casual listeners. If the art of deduction is to be trusted, these audio products have no substantial caveat. So yes, they are a good pick for buyers looking for TWS earphones around Rs. 12,000. However, if you want to explore more options before committing, you can consider the Sennheiser Accentum True Wireless earphones (Review), which support aptX and LC3 audio codecs and are priced in India at Rs. 12,990. https://www.gadgets360.com/audio/reviews/oneplus-buds-pro-3-review-6377216#pfrom=indepth

Windows 11 is getting a new ability with the 24H2 update which means that more than just one app will be able to access the webcam without having to work around this with a fudge. Yes, if you weren’t aware, it’s currently the case for Windows 11 that the OS (and other Windows versions, for that matter) only allows one app access to the camera at any one time. As Windows Latest reports, currently the only way around this is that if there’s a second app that needs to use the webcam at the same time as an initial app which has grabbed the hardware, you can use a virtual camera setup to do so. However, Windows 11 should be able to natively handle multiple apps tapping the webcam simultaneously with a new option in the 24H2 update, as leaker PhantomOfEarth highlighted with a post on X. As you can see, the feature will be in the Camera settings, courtesy of an ‘Advanced camera configuration’ panel that’ll allow the user to enable multi-app camera, which allows multiple apps to simultaneously stream from the camera. Note that this ability is just in testing right now, and it’s hidden in the latest Windows 11 preview in the Dev channel, in fact. Hopefully, it’ll be live soon enough though, and can be tested and run through its paces before full release. Analysis: A throwback of a limitation While multiple apps using the webcam may not be a common scenario for many Windows 11 users, it’s a useful ability that some folks want, and as Microsoft notes in the text for the feature, it’s “designed for the hard-of-hearing community” – so this is yet another useful step forward on the accessibility front, too. (We aren’t sure what scenarios this might be leveraged in, but hopefully when the feature actually goes live in testing, Microsoft will explain in more detail what this does in the usual blog post announcing all the new bits and pieces). You might be wondering why Windows 11 (or previous versions of the OS) doesn’t support multiple webcams anyway? It doesn’t seem like a massive ask, after all. Well, seemingly this is a throwback to past times when hardware wasn’t as beefy as it is today, and sharing the camera between numerous apps could cause system slowdown for lesser PCs. As Windows Latest observes, it seems Microsoft implemented a fundamental rule to prevent this – one app at a time working with the webcam – and just hasn’t changed that in ages. There’s no reason for the restriction now, so it’s (finally) being lifted – at least assuming this change progresses through Windows 11’s testing channels and onto release (and we can’t see why it wouldn’t). There are other slight complications with multiple apps sharing the one webcam, such as image settings like brightness having different parameters demanded by the different apps using the camera. To get around this, Microsoft is having brightness and so forth controlled at a central point in Windows 11’s settings, which overrides any app settings, and that of course fully makes sense. https://www.techradar.com/computing/windows/windows-11-24h2-update-is-set-to-make-a-webcam-change-to-allow-multiple-apps-to-use-the-camera-simultaneously

Arizona-based semiconductor manufacturer Microchip Technology detected a cyberattack against its systems on August 17. The company said in a regulatory filing with the SEC that “the Company determined that an unauthorized party disrupted the Company’s use of certain servers and some business operations.” To address this issue, Microchip had to isolate and shutdown some of the affected systems while investigating the cause of the issue. This inevitably means some disruption to its operations, with manufacturing output falling below normal levels. However, Microchip is still yet to determine the overall scope, nature, and impact of this attack. It also means that Microchip has yet to ascertain how it will affect the company’s bottom line. Microchip Technology did not announce what type of attack hit their systems. There are a few hints that the company was targeted by a ransomware attack, but the company hasn’t given any indication if that is the case. Furthermore, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for it. Aside from its wide-ranging client base, the company is also one of the recipients of the American CHIPS Act payouts, especially as the White House considers it crucial for U.S. national security. But as the global semiconductor race is heating up between two powers — China and the U.S. — resulting in a new chip war that will likely last well into the 21st century, state-sponsored cyberattacks are becoming more and more common. Criminal enterprises are also taking advantage of the increased digitization, targeting massive corporations with ransomware and then asking for millions of dollars just to decrypt their files. Microchip Technology is a major player in the semiconductors industry. It has more than 120,000 customers spread across diverse industries. These include clients in aerospace, automotive, communications, defense, maker and industrial markets. Whatever the cause and impact of the cyberattack on the company is, a reduction in semiconductor output is never a welcome news in the industry. For example, power outages in Taiwan have historically caused global chip prices to rise. Events like this show how fragile the global semiconductor supply chain is, and it will likely take several more years before it becomes more robust against disruptions. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/cyber-security/microchip-technology-suffers-cyberattack-operations-impacted-while-extent-of-attack-is-investigated

People charged with crimes should not be held in a police cell for more than a day under emergency measures to deal with prison overcrowding, a cabinet minister has said. Under Operation Early Dawn, which was triggered on Monday in parts of the north of England and the Midlands, defendants waiting for a court appearance will be kept in police cells until prison space is available. Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens told the BBC the measures would only be in force for "a very short period", typically "a matter of days, or at the most months". The Police Federation has warned police cells are not suitable to hold people for lengthy periods, and it could put pressure on the number of cells available. The prison po[CENSORED]tion has ballooned in recent decades as a result of tougher sentences and court backlogs, with pressure on the system growing since the pandemic. This has been exacerbated by recent riots in parts of England and Northern Ireland, which erupted following the spread of misinformation online after three girls were killed in Southport. More than 1,000 people have been arrested in connection with the violent disorder, whilst 494 people so far have been charged with an offence. As of Friday, the total number of people in prison in England and Wales was 87,893, not far off the current operational capacity of 89,191. Asked about the maximum length of time someone would be held in a police cell rather than being sent to court, Ms Stevens told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Anyone who poses a risk to the public will obviously not be bailed, they will be held in a police station until they're summoned to court and that should be no later than the day after being charged." Phil Jones, custody lead for the Police Federation of England and Wales, said police cells were "not suitable to be used for any great length of time". "Although police officers are highly skilled and trained, they're not prison officers, and prison officers have really specific training around detainee welfare and the needs of prisoners," he told Today. "If we have a sustained period of time where prisoners are in police cells, then there could be a situation moving forward where we don't have the capacity in the system to do business as usual." There have been warnings the emergency measure could clog up police cells and limit the ability to arrest people. However, the National Police Chiefs Council, an umbrella group for senior officers, has insisted police will continue to arrest anyone they need to in order to keep the public safe. Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, someone should be brought before a magistrates' court at the next available sitting after they are charged with an offence, which is usually the same or next day. However, the Law Society, which represents solicitors in England and Wales, has said many magistrates' court cases will be delayed if there must be a prison cell available, impacting victims as well as defendants. 'No wiggle room' Stuart Nolan, chairman of the Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee, said normally it would not be necessary to hold people in a police cell for more than a day after they have been charged, while waiting for a court appearance. However, he said there was "no wiggle room" when it comes to prison capacity, meaning if there was a major incident like the recent violent disorder, it was possible people could be held for longer. Mr Nolan said this could lead to legal challenges, or more people being released on bail rather than being brought quickly before a court. "It has knock-on effects," he said. "If you take up too many cells in your local police station, what do you do with the people you arrest for violent disorder?" More prison spaces are expected to become available in September, when separate measures to release some inmates early come into affect. The Conservative government also had to use emergency measures to ease the pressure on prisons, with Operation Early Dawn last triggered in May. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c86lgng99d0o

A red squirrel has been spotted in the central belt of Scotland in a rare sighting. The squirrel was seen darting along a fence in Lanette Perry's garden in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (SSRS), a project led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, said it was one of the most southerly red squirrel sightings in Scotland's central belt in decades. It said the emergence of the species in the area could be due to conservation efforts. SSRS spokeswoman Katie Berry said: "We cannot say exactly why this pioneering red has turned up in this location - it is perhaps testament to the grey control efforts in areas to the north in recent years, and possibly also as a result of increasing pine marten po[CENSORED]tions in the Central Lowlands." More than 75% of the UK’s remaining red squirrels are found in Scotland, however there are only about 120,000 remaining in Scotland. Their numbers have fallen drastically in recent decades. This is largely due the spread of the invasive non-native grey squirrel, which was first introduced from North America in the late 1800s to decorate the gardens of stately homes. Grey squirrels also carry squirrelpox, a virus that does not harm them but is deadly to reds. The destruction of woodland has also contributed to the red squirrel’s decline. SSRS, which is supported by the Scottish government’s Nature Restoration Fund, is monitoring squirrel numbers across Scotland, managing the impact of squirrelpox, and helping to combat the spread of grey squirrels in key strategic areas. It says the introduction of pine martens could also have had an impact on squirrel numbers as it is believed they prey on grey squirrels more than reds. The group has appealed to anyone who sees red or grey squirrels to report any sightings to them and submit photographs if possible. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp3dkr7gv69o
