  13. Bugatti is closer than ever to proving that it has a big enough customer base to justify a second model line, boss Stephan Winkelmann has revealed at the Paris motor show. Citing the success of the £4.5m Bugatti Divo - a limited-to-40-cars Chiron tuned for maximum track performance, which sold out immediately - Winkelmann said: “What’s becoming clearer is that the enthusiasm is there to grow the brand. “Bugatti has never focused a car so much around dynamics, but the response to the Divo has been tremendous. Each car has been sold to an existing Chiron customer, and the allocation has gone immediately. That shows the passion for this brand. “That shows me that we are ready to do more. In terms of the amount of people we have who love the brand, I feel we have proved a lot. The next question is how much money do we have to invest into our future to make some of our ideas become reality - and will the return justify that investment. That is what we must work on. “Today we have many ideas, but all of them require work, and not all of them will succeed. We are still working on ideas.” Winkelmann didn’t discuss specifics of what kind of car a second Bugatti model might be, but sources have suggested that the firm remains unconvinced that the five-door fastback design once mooted with the 2009 Galibier concept would prove po[CENSORED]r enough. Instead, a high-riding SUV-inspired design is said to be gaining favour among senior decision makers at the firm. Prior to leaving Lamborghini Winkelmann led plans for the launch of the Urus SUV, which was launched earlier this year and which is tipped to be a sales success. However, a Bugatti version of that car would need to justify a price tag at least twice that of the Lamborghini (which starts from £159,000), and deliver even greater performance. Winkelmann did concede that future Bugatti powertrains could be electrified. “We have to find the right balance between emissions and performance, and while that is not clear today it is possible that the highest-end sports cars could take advantage of the technologies,” he said. “Above all, we must ensure that the Bugattis of tomorrow remain attractive to our customers.”
  14. Highest rate of unemployment in India in the last 20 years Unemployment has been one of the biggest challenges for policymakers in India. Now they have more reasons to worry about it because as per the ‘State of Working India 2018’ report, the country has the highest rate of unemployment in 20 years. The report, which was released by the Centre for Sustainable Employment of the Azim Premji University, brought to light some scary realities that plague the job market in India. Only 1 per cent increase in employment According to the report, “Even as GDP growth rates have risen, the relationship between growth and employment generation has become weaker over time. In the 1970s and 1980s, when GDP growth was around 3-4 per cent, employment growth was around 2 per cent per annum. Since the 1990s, and particularly in the 2000s, GDP growth has accelerated to 7 per cent but employment growth has slowed to 1 per cent or even less. The ratio of GDP growth to employment growth is now less than 0.1.” Wages continue to be well below the Seventh Central Pay Commission minimum Shockingly, 82 per cent of male and 92 per cent of female workers earn less than ₹10,000 a month (₹18,000 per month is the minimum salary recommended by the Seventh Central Pay Commission). “This suggests that a large majority of Indians are not being paid what may be termed a living wage, and it explains the intense hunger for government jobs,” stated the report. High rate of open unemployment Another disturbing truth the report highlighted is the growing rate of open unemployment among the educated youth. "It used to be said that India’s problem is not unemployment but underemployment and low wages. But a new feature of the economy is a high rate of open unemployment, which is now over 5 per cent overall, and a much higher 16 per cent for youth and the higher educated," stated the report. Regions where unemployment is highest According to the report, while the increase in unemployment is clearly visible across India, but it is particularly severe in the northern states. 15. The White House has given the FBI clearance to interview anyone it wants to by Friday in its investigation of sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The new guidance, described to The Associated Press by a person familiar with it, was issued to the FBI over the weekend in response to Democratic and news media pushback that the scope of the probe was too narrow. It comes as the FBI presses ahead with its investigation, questioning in recent days at least two people about accusations of misconduct against Kavanaugh dating to when he was in high school and college. President Donald Trump, addressing those concerns at a news conference Monday, said he wants the FBI to do a “comprehensive” investigation and “it wouldn’t bother me at all” if agents pursued accusations made by three women who have come forward publicly. But he also said Senate Republicans are determining the parameters of the investigation and “ultimately, they’re making the judgment.” “My White House will do whatever the senators want,” Trump said. “The one thing I want is speed.”
  16. Filtering information for search engines, acting as an opponent during a board game or recognizing images: Artificial intelligence has far outpaced human intelligence in certain tasks. Several groups from the Freiburg excellence cluster BrainLinks-BrainTools led by neuroscientist private lecturer Dr. Tonio Ball are showing how ideas from computer science could revolutionize brain research. In the scientific journal Human Brain Mapping they illustrate how a self-learning algorithm decodes human brain signals that were measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG). It included performed movements, but also hand and foot movements that were merely thought of, or an imaginary rotation of objects. Even though the algorithm was not given any characteristics ahead of time, it works as quickly and precisely as traditional systems that have been created to solve certain tasks based on predetermined brain signal characteristics, which are therefore not appropriate for every situation. The demand for such diverse intersections between human and machine is huge: At the University Hospital Freiburg, for instance, it could be used for early detection of epileptic seizures. It could also be used to improve communication possibilities for severely paralyzed patients or an automatic neurological diagnosis. "Our software is based on brain-inspired models that have proven to be most helpful to decode various natural signals such as phonetic sounds," says computer scientist Robin Tibor Schirrmeister. The researcher is using it to rewrite methods that the team has used for decoding EEG data: So-called artificial neural networks are the heart of the current project at BrainLinks-BrainTools. "The great thing about the program is we needn't predetermine any characteristics. The information is processed layer for layer, that is in multiple steps with the help of a non-linear function. The system learns to recognize and differentiate between certain behavioral patterns from various movements as it goes along," explains Schirrmeister. The model is based on the connections between nerve cells in the human body in which electric signals from synapses are directed from cellular protuberances to the cell's core and back again. "Theories have been in circulation for decades, but it wasn't until the emergence of today's computer processing power that the model has become feasible," comments Schirrmeister. Customarily, the model's precision improves with a large number of processing layers. Up to 31 were used during the study, otherwise known as "Deep Learning." Up until now, it had been problematic to interpret the network's circuitry after the learning process had been completed. All algorithmic processes take place in the background and are invisible. That is why the researchers developed the software to create cards from which they could understand the decoding decisions. The researchers can insert new datasets into the system at any time. "Unlike the old method, we are now able to go directly to the raw signals that the EEG records from the brain. Our system is as precise, if not better, than the old one," says head investigator Tonio Ball, summarizing the study's research contribution. The technology's potential has yet to be exhausted -- together with his team, the researcher would like to further pursue its development: "Our vision for the future includes self-learning algorithms that can reliably and quickly recognize the user's various intentions based on their brain signals. In addition, such algorithms could assist neurological diagnoses."
  17. Google's getting into the game streaming business. The search giant today announced Project Stream, a "technical test" which lets you stream video games to the Chrome web browser on either a desktop or laptop. To test Project Stream, Google will let select participants play Assassin's Creed Odyssey for free beginning Oct. 5. Those interested in participating can sign up here. Google says Project Stream is meant for internet connections that can handle a 25-megabit-per-second connection, and that users must be 17 years or older (for the trial, at least, this makes sense. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is rated M for mature by the ESRB). Google is seemingly preparing to go up against Nvidia's GeForce Now, which lets PC, Mac and Nvidia's Shield platform gamers stream more than 225 games. That service is currently in a free beta. These services may, one day, mean that many gamers don't need powerful gaming PCs or consoles to play games. However, many currently do not have fast enough internet connections to make it work.
