  1. Nobody can actually visit the Tokyo Auto Salon this week, thanks to COVID-19, but if you check out the Honda booth online starting on January 15, you'll see two concepts that expand the limits of a small car. A modified Honda Fit called the e:HEV Crosstar Custom gets the little hatchback ready for more time in the outdoors with a slightly raised suspension and all-terrain tires, along with a rougher—but still cute—look. The N-Van Custom, a.k.a. the "3rd Place Van," is ready to tackle urban duties like operating as a food truck or a "third place" for adventures that's not work nor home. Good things come in small sizes. Especially when they're modified Japan-domestic-market Hondas that have been transformed from basic transportation options to quirky multi-use vehicles. We'll take one of each, thank you. Up first is the black-and-tan Fit e:HEV Crosstar Custom, an adapted hatchback based on the Fit e:HEV Crosstar. Honda has discontinued the Fit in the U.S., but even before it canceled the car here, we were not getting the hybrid version. The Crosstar is a CUV-ish trim level for the regular hybrid Fit, and for this Custom version, the show team raised the Fit's suspension a bit, threw on a rugged Yakima roof rack, and added Toyo All-Terrain Open Country tires on black steel wheels to emphasize the fact that even small cars sometimes deserve to drive off the beaten path. When you're back in the city and feeling peckish, head on over to the other customized Honda, a food truck version of the N-Van. The metallic silver N-Van Custom, called the "3rd Place Van," is meant to adapt to whatever boxy functions users might need. With a large roof rack on top and a string of inviting lights out back, its main work use is as a café, selling food out of the side door that's covered by a red and white awning. Then, when it's time to play, it can be used (if our translation is accurate) as a place to rest—a "third place" to be away from both work and home. We expect to get more details on both of these cars once the Tokyo Auto Salon opens, virtually, on Friday, January 15. During the event, Honda will also make an announcement regarding participation in four-wheel motorsports in 2021. For its virtual visitors with a need for speed, the company will showcase some of the vehicles that raced for the brand during 2020. The list includes the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing RB16 and Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda AT01, both of which raced in the 2020 FIA Formula 1 World Championship' the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing IR-12 from the 2020 IndyCar Series; and the Team Kunimitsu Raybrig NSX-GT from the 2020 SUPER GT Series GT500 Class.
  2. My friend loved fresh flowers. When we were young girls, foraging for flowers in the wild was a favourite pastime. She brought them back to our hostel room and created beautiful arrangements. Now she is a super-rich wife of a successful businessman. By her own account, she spends a huge amount of money on flowers, every other day. Is she overindulging or simply enjoying what she loves? Spending habits are like that. We can convince ourselves that we deserve the expense, or that we can immensely afford it, and learn to not be guilty about it. Personal finance has a term for such indulgence. Lifestyle creep. The easy ability of expenses to increase with income. It can move up slowly and make it difficult to shed. The creep up is the stealth with which we allow these expenses to grow. As incomes move up, we can see lifestyle changes happening somewhat naturally. Most households make better food choices. Increased grocery bills from generous consumption of good food is normal. Healthier po[CENSORED]tions is a normal outcome of better and stable incomes. Households upgrade their clothes, homes, furniture and fixtures, cars, electronics and lifestyle creep is upon us. The need to belong to a certain social strata creates pressures that households find tough to stave off. Especially while living in a community with houses too close for comfort. Neighbours then set the bar for social markers and expenses. Many households find themselves living paycheck to paycheck because they have purchased a car they can’t afford and have filled their house with stuff that display their status to neighbours. Living a simple life and fighting lifestyle creep may not always be a virtue. The line between being simple and being stingy is thin. Households are unable to make that decision confidently, unless they are able to truly appreciate and feel proud of their decision to lead a simple life. Severely cutting back on expenses can also be a sign of abundant risk aversion and caution. How can a household draw a checklist and be sure things are in control?
  3. BEIJING -- Experts from the World Health Organization are due to arrive in China this week for a long-anticipated investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, the government said Monday. The experts will arrive on Thursday and meet with Chinese counterparts, the National Health Commission said in a one-sentence statement that gave no other details. It wasn't immediately clear whether the experts would be travelling to the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus was first detected in late 2019. Negotiations for the visit have long been underway. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed disappointment last week over delays, saying that members of the international scientific team departing from their home countries had already started on their trip as part of an arrangement between the WHO and the Chinese government. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said China had approved the visit following consultations between the sides and called it an opportunity to "exchange views with Chinese scientists and medical experts on scientific co-operation on the tracing of the origin of the new coronavirus." "Along with continuous changes in the epidemic situation, our knowledge of the virus deepens, and more early cases are discovered," Zhao told reporters at a daily briefing, adding that the search for the origin will likely involve "multiple countries and localities." China's government has strictly controlled all research at home into the origins of the virus, an Associated Press investigation found, while state-owned media have played up fringe theories that suggest the virus could have originated elsewhere. The AP investigation found that China's government is handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to scientists researching the virus' origins in southern China. But it is monitoring their findings and mandating that the publication of any data or research must be approved by a new task force managed by China's Cabinet, under direct orders from President Xi Jinping, according to internal documents obtained by the AP. The culture of secrecy is believed to have delayed warnings about the pandemic, blocked the sharing of information with the WHO and hampered early testing. Australia and other countries have called for an investigation into the origins of the virus, prompting angry responses from Beijing. There was no immediate comment from the WHO on Monday's announcement, but U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric had earlier told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "is fully supportive of Dr. Tedros' and WHO's efforts to get a team in there." "It's very important that as the WHO is in the lead in fighting the pandemic, that it also has a leading role in trying to look back at the roots of this pandemic so we can be better prepared for the next one," Dujarric said. "We very much hope" that China's reported comments that it is working with the WHO and looking for a smooth visit "will happen." The virus' origins have been the source of intense speculation, much of it centred around the likelihood that it was carried by bats and passed to humans through an intermediary species sold as food or medicine in traditional Chinese wet markets. China has largely stemmed new cases of domestic transmission, but said Monday that scores of people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Hebei province, bordering Beijing. That outbreak comes amid measures to curb the further spread of the virus during next month's Lunar New Year holiday. Authorities have called on citizens not to travel, ordered schools closed a week early and conducted testing on a massive scale. China has recorded 87,536 total cases of the virus, including 4,634 deaths. Hospitals are currently treating 673 people for COVID-19, while 506 others are in isolation and under observation after testing positive without showing symptoms., officials said. The Hebei outbreak has raised particular concern because of the province's proximity to Beijing. Parts of the province are under lockdown and interprovincial travel has been largely cut off, with those entering Beijing to work having to show proof of employment and a clean bill of health. Beijing has also seen a handful of new cases, prompting authorities to lock down some suburban communities and require residents to show negative test results to access grocery stores and other public spaces.
  4. WorkTrans, a Chinese developer of human resources (HR) management software, announced on Friday that it has pocketed a combined $190.5 million across Series C and Series D rounds of financing. The startup raised $50.5 million in the Series C round backed by Sequoia Capital China and several earlier investors. It raked in $140 million in the Series D round from Chinese social networking and gaming giant Tencent, and CICC Capital, a private equity fund management platform of Chinese investment bank CICC, among others. “China’s cloud-based HR services market is burgeoning in recent years as industry infrastructures continue to improve; new demand surges; and clients’ HR investment grows,” WorkTrans’ founder and CEO Chu Feng said in a statement. Globally, payroll & HR solutions and services market is expected to reach $21.9 billion in 2020 and further grow to $38 billion by 2027, according to market researcher ReportLinker. Driven by rising domestic labour costs due to the country’s ageing demographic, China’s payroll & HR solutions and services market is forecast to hit $8.8 billion by 2027, trailing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6 per cent between 2020 and 2027, compared to other rapidly-developing markets like Japan, Canada, and Germany, at 3.5 per cent, 7.4 per cent, and 5.4 per cent, respectively. Shanghai-based WorkTrans leverages advanced technologies like cloud computing and deep learning to build HR management software and solutions, primarily for large and medium-sized enterprises in sectors including retail, manufacturing, catering, and modern service. Founded in 2015, the firm has by far served more than 4 million employees across 120,000 enterprises, according to its website. Some of its clients include Bank of China (BOC), supermarket retailer Carrefour China, drug maker Sinopharm Group, dairy products maker Mengniu Dairy, and food & beverage brand BreadTalk. Upon the completion of the new financing, Chu said that the startup will continue its efforts in offering “one-stop, high cost-effective HR solutions” by increasing investment in product & technology development, and construction of a nationwide service network. In November 2018, WorkTrans secured 160 million yuan in a Series B round from Lightspeed China Partners, DCM, and Qiming Venture Partners. The firm also raised 100 million yuan in a Series A+ round in February 2018, following its 45-million-yuan Series A round in August 2017, according to its website. 5. The flagship Navi based graphics cards have been highly anticipated ever since AMD introduced its first-generation RDNA lineup. While the first generation RDNA gave us a small glimpse of what we could expect from a flagship offering, the lineup never really introduced its own flagship variant & instead focused on the more mainstream performance-ended products. But two years later, the wait is finally over! AMD has officially launched its Big Navi graphics card lineup and it's not just the biggest Navi GPU we have seen to date but also based on the 2nd Generation RDNA 2 architecture which delivers an impressive leap in performance per watt while offering a range of new features to put AMD Radeon ack in the high-end and enthusiast market segment. The AMD RDNA 2 architecture for its Big Navi Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6900 series graphics cards has a lot to offer. In addition to architectural enhancements, you can expect hardware-accelerated ray tracing, smart access memory, Infinity Cache, and a lot more features on-deck which make the lineup one of the most competitive enthusiast families that AMD has ever positioned against NVIDIA. Some of the main features for the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards include: AMD Infinity Cache – A high-performance, last-level data cache suitable for 4K and 1440p gaming with the highest level of detail enabled. 128 MB of on-die cache dramatically reduces latency and power consumption, delivering higher overall gaming performance than traditional architectural designs. AMD Smart Access Memory – An exclusive feature of systems with AMD Ryzen 5000 Series processors, AMD B550 and X570 motherboards, and Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards. It gives AMD Ryzen processors greater access to the high-speed GDDR6 graphics memory, accelerating CPU processing and providing up to a 13-percent performance increase on an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card in Forza Horizon 4 at 4K when combined with the new Rage Mode one-click overclocking setting. Built for Standard Chassis – With a length of 267mm and 2x8 standard 8-pin power connectors, and designed to operate with existing enthusiast-class 650W-750W power supplies, gamers can easily upgrade their existing large to small form factor PCs without additional cost. AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT "Big Navi 21 XT" GPU Powered 16 GB Graphics Card Specifications The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT will come packed with the Navi 21 XT GPU which is a cut-down SKU featuring 72 Compute Units or 4608 SPs. The card will also feature 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus interface, a 512 GB/s total bandwidth, and clock speeds of 2015 MHz base and 2250 MHz boost at reference specs. The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT also packs 72 Ray Accelerators which are dedicated for real-time raytracing workloads. The card will feature a based TBP of 300W with factory-overclocked models pushing it above 350W and will arrive at a later date. In addition to the standard memory, the Radeon RX 6800 series graphics cards will also feature 128 MB of Infinity Cache on the GPU die. The cache will help boost bandwidth for higher performance at resolutions beyond 1080p HD. The 128 MB Infinity Cache boosts the standard 512 GB/s bandwidth by 3.25x, delivering an effective bandwidth of up to 1.664 TB/s across all Big Navi GPU based graphics cards. In terms of performance, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is shown to compete against the GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. The card features a 20W lower total board power & delivers better GPU performance in several AAA titles using the best API (Vulkan / DirectX 12). AMD is also bringing its Rage-mode back which is an automatic overclocking tool within its Radeon Software suite that delivers even higher performance along with a nifty new feature known as Smart Access. Gains of up to 13% were showcased with the said features as can be seen below. So for this review, I will be taking a look at the MSI Radeon RX 6800 XT Gaming X Trio. The Gaming X Trio comes is said to feature an MSRP of around $849 US so that's a $200 US premium over the 649 US reference MSRP. At this price, you get a triple-fan cooling solution and a factory overclock out of the boxIn case you want to read our full AMD RDNA 2 GPU architecture deep dive and Radeon RX 6800 XT reference model review, head over to this link.
  6. That Nintendo Switch and its selection of games sure are hot products right now, aren't they? Titles exclusive to the system make up almost half of the latest UK sales chart as gaming purchases across the nation increase by 33% under lockdown. That leaves PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games feeling like their sole purpose is to make up the numbers, with the best a title available on either system can do being Just Dance 2021 in third. And even then, almost 90% of those physical purchases were for the Switch version. As a result of this Nintendo dominance, FIFA 21 slips two places to fourth while Assassin's Creed Valhalla drops one spot in fifth. Everybody's favourite game Grand Theft Auto V moves up to eighth and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is all the way down in tenth — that's quite literally all we have to discuss this week. Nintendo really is on top as the UK enters another phase of complete lockdown, and it doesn't look like any major releases will come along to shake things up until Hitman 3. UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 9th January 2021 Animal Crossing: New Horizons Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Just Dance 2021 FIFA 21 Assassin's Creed Valhalla Ring Fit Adventure Minecraft (Switch) Grand Theft Auto V New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

  10. 12 years ago today, Satoshi Nakamoto released version 0.1 of an experimental but set in stone digital money protocol known as Bitcoin. It’s been a tumultuous 12 years, but this year is special—it sees Bitcoin celebrate its birthday with the original protocol restored. Bitcoin, restored to its original form as Bitcoin SV (BSV), has unbounded scaling capabilities and not only functions as Satoshi’s “peer to peer electronic cash system” but is also capable of processing and verifying all the world’s data. Bitcoin isn’t just an economic layer for the internet, its blockchain is able to be the internet. Why is January 9th Bitcoin’s birthday? On this day in 2009, Dr. Craig Wright (under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto) released Bitcoin v.0.1 on Sourceforge. The first block was mined using proof-of-work, and from that point on anyone with an ordinary Windows PC could participate. We also marked January 3 as an anniversary. That was the date Satoshi created what’s now known as the “Genesis Block,” or Bitcoin block #0. The keys to block #0 were pre-computed using external software and hard-coded into the block, thus it wasn’t “mined” the usual Bitcoin way. Since no-one else could join in until the protocol was available to all, January 9, 2009, and block #1 mark a more appropriate Bitcoin Birthday. Things didn’t all go smoothly from there. The late Hal Finney was Bitcoin’s second-earliest adopter, receiving the first Bitcoin transaction a few days after the software release. Dr. Wright has credited Finney with helping keep the early Bitcoin network running in that first month after it “fell over” several times. Wright’s friend Dave Kleiman also provided advice on getting everything back on track. Those first string of days between January 3 and 9, 2009, saw the network (which at that stage consisted of 69 computers, all Dr. Wright’s) restart unexpectedly, requiring Wright to frantically travel between distant locations and update Microsoft licenses to get them all online again. The 12 years since From its earliest years, the Bitcoin network’s earliest participants questioned how the network could scale to handle payments for everyone on Earth. To provide some context, the VISA network alone has over 3.3 billion cards issued and can handle over 65,000 transactions per second. Bitcoin would need to compete with that, and more. Once other developers joined in, and especially after “Satoshi” left the Bitcoin project in 2010, alterations were made to the protocol rules that changed the way it handled transactions—especially those based on timing (nLockTime). Almost immediately upon his exit, Nakamoto’s development repository was moved from the central development focused Sourceforge repo and relocated to GitHub, which is more typically used for communal development. Soft forks became the norm, undermining the role of honest nodes and giving more deliberate power to software developers with repository keys. Pay to Script Hash (P2SH) arrived in 2012 to replace Bitcoin style multisignature wallets. In 2016, BIP 125 introduced “Replace by Fee” (RBF) protocol which allowed transactions in the mempool to be rebroadcast to a different address than the original transactions—fundamentally undermining the reliability of instant transactions. The other big issue was block size. While many said Bitcoin could handle the extra traffic simply by increasing the transaction block’s maximum size over time, others argued this couldn’t be done—the network didn’t have the bandwidth and it would create massive amounts of data; too much for small, independent networks to handle. Dr. Wright has always argued that advances in technology hardware would accommodate this growth, and that “mining” (now known on Bitcoin as “processing”) would become a professional pursuit rather than a hobbyist interest. The “scaling debate” never went away though, becoming near-religious in its fervor and eventually leading to a split in the network in August 2017. BTC, which falsely claims to be the original Bitcoin but is actually an airdropped token, allowed control of the protocol to remain with its core group of centralized developers, and also altered the protocol to remove digital signatures from the transaction block data (aka “segregated witness,” or SegWit). The group favoring “big block,” on-chain scaling first continued the Bitcoin protocol issuing the new ticker symbol BCH in 2017. The Bitcoin network later split again, in November 2018, with centralized protocol developers airdropping BCH, and Bitcoin took the new ticker symbol BSV. The developers following Satoshi’s Vision as outlined in the original Whitepaper vowed to restore the Bitcoin protocol to its original form and prevent anyone from altering its basic rules forever after. BSV achieved this goal in February 2020, just after Bitcoin’s 11th birthday, calling its restored protocol software update “Genesis,” or Bitcoin v1.0.0. Genesis also removed all maximum transaction block size limits, finally allowing Bitcoin to process as much data as it needed, at minimal cost to ordinary users. The update also restored the original Script language which was disabled many years ago. Bitcoin may have just turned 12, but it’s been a rough 12 years. We can say at least that enough people had the vision to maintain Bitcoin’s original purpose, taking guidance from Satoshi himself to restore a network that was always destined for greater things. Bitcoin’s blockchain is now ready to be the world’s universal ledger of truth, processing all data from payments between individuals to millions of “nanotransactions” from connected devices. It’s a great accomplishment and so now, more than perhaps any other year before it, we’re happy to celebrate Bitcoin’s birthday and continue to imagine what comes next. New to Bitcoin? 11. ASUS's next-generation ROG Maximus XIII motherboards based on the Z590 chipset and designed for Intel's Rocket Lake Desktop CPUs have leaked out. The pictures were posted by Twitter Fellow, Harukaze5719, and include the ROG Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial and the ROG Maximus XIII HERO motherboards. ASUS's ROG Maximus XIII Z590 Motherboards For Intel's 11th Gen Rocket Lake Desktop CPUs Leak Out, Include ROG Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial & ROG Maximus XIII HERO The two motherboards that have been pictured art part of the ASUS ROG Maximus XIII family and will feature the Z590 chipset which offers full support for Intel Rocket Lake Desktop CPUs and also carries PCIe Gen 4.0 support. There are two motherboards that have leaked out, the ROG Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial and the ROG Maximus XIII HERO. Both of these motherboards will be priced at very different price points so let's start by talking about their looks and features. ASUS ROG Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial Z590 Motherboard The ASUS ROG Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial is as high-end as ASUS's Z590 motherboard lineup can get. The main difference between this and the standard Extreme variant is that the Glacial includes a pre-installed water block and is primarily aimed at custom-loop cooled PCs. The board features a dual 8-pin connector configuration to power the CPU socket, has four DDR4 DIMM slots which will be able to support up to 128 GB capacities at some really fast speeds There also seems to be a new version of the DIMM.2 expander slot which features a silver metallic color instead of the matte black colors it used before. There are several buttons for overclocking & fine-tuning the board and even voltage measurement points that are right next to the DIMM.2 slot that is essential for enthusiasts and overclockers. Expansion slots include two PCIe 4.0 x16 and a single PCIe 4.0 x4 slot. The motherboard itself has two M.2 slots, both of which sit beneath the aluminum front cover while the PCH also gets cooled by the custom-loop water block. The DIMM.2 slot will allow for two additional M.2 slots though we don't know if they will operate at Gen 3 or Gen 4 speeds. Storage includes 6 SATA III ports and dual USB 3.0/3.2 front panel headers. ASUS ROG Maximus XIII HERO Z590 Motherboard Moving over to the ASUS ROG Maximus XIII HERO, this mainstream ROG Z590 motherboard will be priced at around $400 US. The motherboard seems to carry WiFi so it looks like we won't see a non WiFi implementation of this motherboard within the Z590 generation and only one model will exist. The CPU is once again powered by dual 8-pin connectors but the power delivery is not comparable to that of the Extreme variant. The memory design is similar and we see large aluminum heatsinks with embedded RGB LEDs over the VRMs and underneath the I/O plate. The VRM heatsink includes a metallic Heatpipe for faster and efficient heat dissipation. Expansion on the motherboard includes three PCIe 4.0 x16 slots (x16/x8/x4 electrical). There are also two M.2 slots while additional storage options include 6 SATA III ports. I/O includes dual USB 3.0 and a single USB 3.2 front panel header. There is power, reset, and flex key buttons alongside a DEBUG LED on the motherboard. The motherboard also carries the SUPREMEFX Audio solution. Expect these two and several other ASUS Z590 motherboards to be announced next week at CES 2021.
  12. Nintendo is supposedly putting a stop to small-time developers gaming the Switch eShop charts with dirt-cheap deals by placing a limit on pricing. This information comes from SMG Studios via Reddit. In a brief reply message, it's highlighted how a 99 cents sale on the game Death Squared would be its "lowest price" ever on Nintendo Switch, as "new rules" in place on the Switch eShop now apparently prevent developers from pricing games below $1.99 USD. Obviously, this excludes free-to-play titles. "This is the lowest price it will ever be. New rules on the eShope mean no game can be below $1.99 and this is 99c because I planned this sale back in Aug! haha so I beat the system!" Although Death Squared is no longer on sale, a quick look at the Switch eShop reveals there are still a number of games available for less than $1.99 (99 cents, to be precise) - they include titles like Plague Road, HoPiKo, Knight Swap 2 and Ant-Gravity: Tiny's Adventure. Perhaps the developers of these titles also locked in sales well before the new rules came into play. According to a story over on Polygon, Nintendo recently stopped games that cost a single cent from making the "best sellers" list on the Switch eShop. There's also apparently a rule in place now preventing developers from providing 100% discounts if a user alreadys owns a game from their catalog. This information was shared by Simon Carless’ GameDiscoverCo newsletter. If we hear any updates or developments, we'll be sure to let you know.
  13. Here are some yardstick for selecting auto component stocks Listed vehicle manufactures are only a handful in number. But it is not so when it comes to the auto component space, which has a number of mid- and small-cap stocks. The supply chain for the auto companies is quite long, consisting of at least three tiers of vendors. Thus, the auto component industry is highly fragmented. With auto being a cyclical industry, the fortunes of many parts suppliers also wax and wane with ups and downs in the cycle. Typically, companies having a diversified client and geography base, those supplying to more than one segment of vehicles (i.e., cars, bikes, trucks, three-wheelers, tractors, off-road vehicles) as well as those that cater to both the new vehicle as well as the replacement market requirements tend to weather a storm better. How should investors go about picking auto component stocks? Here’s a guide: Parameters To arrive at a short-list, we screened auto component stocks on parameters such as five-year CAGR in sales and profits, EBITDA margins, debt levels and return on net worth. A double-digit growth in profits and/or sales in the last five years, consistent double-digit EBITDA margins and return on net worth as well as low debt levels were favoured. Five years is long enough for a cyclical industry to go through ups and downs and deliver. From an initial set of stocks that showed double-digit five-year CAGR in profits and or/sales, we further eliminated those that had relatively higher debt and lower margins and return on equity. The performance in the first six months of this year has been considered as the final filter, but has not been given undue weightage for the overall short-list, considering the extraordinary circumstances. Who made the cut Many of those that made the cut are not very surprising names. The list includes Balkrishna Industries, Endurance Technologies, Sundram Fasteners, Suprajit Engineering and Amara Raja Batteries (not in any particular order). Balkrishna Industries is a tyre manufacturer having the twin advantages of geographic diversification (only one-fourth of its revenues from India) as well as presence in a segment where there is substantial replacement demand due to wear and tear. Endurance and Amara Raja too are a play on geographic diversification and presence in replacement segment, respectively. Sundram Fasteners, is a market leader in fasteners and makes value-added components for various auto segments. while Suprajit whose products include cables and lighting solutions, again has global exposure. But there were also some under-the-radar picks in Fiem Industries, GNA Axles, and India Nippon Electricals. Depressed earnings and sharp rise in stock price has seen valuation of many of the stocks discussed here move up steeply. The challenge today is picking stocks that are good, but still trade at reasonable valuations. Currently, only Fiem Industries fits in here. Fiem’s business lies in in automotive lighting and rear-view mirrors space. The company is a supplier for the two-wheeler industry, with Honda and TVS Motor being its biggest clients. While the stock has more than doubled since the March lows, it trades at about 15 times its trailing earnings. This is in almost in line with its 3 and 5 year average historical valuation. The company bounced back to profitability in the three months ended September 2020, after making losses in the April-June quarter. Apart from this blip, the company’ s profit growth has been healthy in earlier quarters. It’s EBITDA margin stands at about 11-12 per cent in the last five years, better than peer, Lumax Industries. The company’s return ratios ( return on equity / capital employed) took a downswing from the over 20 per cent levels five years ago due to its LED lighting business, not taking off as quickly as expected. The return ratios in the last four years have been at 12-17 per cent levels. LED lighting is a promising long-term opportunity though, for the company. Its debt to equity ratio as of FY20 is 0.3. For other stocks in our short-list, investors can wait for price correction and/or recovery in near-term earnings, to accumulate.
  14. TORONTO -- In the wake of several Canadian elected officials being caught travelling over the holidays – despite federal health guidelines stating non-essential travel should be avoided – it turns out the Canadian public has also been travelling. Travel data uploaded by the state of Hawaii shows Canadian travellers have been visiting the islands in droves, by both direct and connecting flights. Newsletter sign-up: Get The COVID-19 Brief sent to your inbox The portal allows results to be filtered by airline, flight number, destination, date range, arrival airport, whether a traveller is a visitor or resident and if the traveler is in quarantine. According to the data, more than 4,000 Canadians visited Hawaii between Dec. 1, 2020 to Jan. 7, 2021. Of the 4,253 travellers listed, the majority (2,564) came from Calgary International Airport (YYC), 1,667 arrived via Vancouver International (YVR), 12 from Edmonton International (YEG) and 10 from Pearson International Airport in Toronto (YYZ).
