  3. Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to protect the landmark Paris agreement, which aims to curb climate change and fossil fuel emissions. He made the promise in a phone call with incoming French President Emmanuel Macron, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement. US President Donald Trump is still deciding whether to withdraw from the accord - an election campaign promise. Climate experts worry such a move would throw the agreement into chaos. Global climate deal: In summary Trump shadow hangs over climate talks opening World v Trump on global climate deal? A White House meeting to discuss the topic on Tuesday has been postponed, amid reports of divisions among senior Trump advisers. It is the second time the meeting has been cancelled. No new date has been given. Grey line Team Trump divided: Analysis by Anthony Zurcher, BBC News, Washington The current disagreement within the White House over whether the US should withdraw from the Paris climate agreement is a prime example of the much-reported palace intrigue within the Trump administration spilling out into a policy debate. In one corner you have senior officials like strategist Steve Bannon and Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt, who are on record calling for an exit from the accord. Others, like Energy Secretary Rick Perry, have been noncommittal. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said the US should keep a "seat at the table" and presidential adviser/daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner are pro-Paris. Donald Trump, while he did once tweet that global warming was a Chinese conspiracy, has largely avoided extended discussions on the subject. While his administration is steadily driving to roll back many Obama-era regulations, environmental issues as a whole seem of little interest to him. Any White House meeting to hash out a coherent policy on the Paris agreement is destined to be contentious and with a decidedly uncertain resolution. A battle no-one is convinced they will win is one that is ripe for delay - again. Grey line Mr Xi told Mr Macron China and France "should protect the achievements of global governance, including the Paris agreement", according to the Chinese foreign ministry. Under former President Barack Obama, the US and China issued several joint statements on climate change, even announcing together they would sign the Paris agreement. The two countries are the world's biggest polluters. For his part, when Mr Macron received his congratulatory phone call from the US president he told him he would also seek to defend the climate deal.

  7. Emmanuel Macron took his first steps as France's president-elect on Monday but faces a tough task establishing a team that can govern effectively. His party has announced it is changing name from En Marche to La Republique En Marche (Republic on the Move). It must pick candidates quickly ahead of parliamentary elections on 11 and 18 June. It wants to be the biggest party but at the moment has no seats at all. Mr Macron beat the far right's Marine Le Pen by 66.1% to 33.9% on Sunday. But a low turnout and a record number of spoiled or blank votes showed disillusionment among many, particularly on the far left, at the choice they were given. Read more: The roots of Macron's ambition Unwrapping 'Le Big Mac' Meet Brigitte - France's new first lady What does it mean for Brexit? What do world leaders think? Ms Le Pen has also signalled there will be a change to her National Front party. There are suggestions from its officials, too, that it will change its name. But she has vowed to lead the "new force" into the parliamentary elections. Emmanuel Macron inherits one of the most powerful positions in Europe, and all the symbolism that comes with it. This morning at the Arc de Triomphe, he showed no sign of being awed by his new job. He walked alongside the outgoing President, François Hollande, as the two laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They then shook hands with veterans. Mr Macron appeared to take longer to make his way through one receiving line, stopping to talk to elderly men, leaving Mr Hollande to wait for him at the end. Emmanuel Macron now becomes France's youngest leader since Napoleon Bonaparte, whose battles are commemorated at the Arc de Triomphe. The new president will hope that his own fights are less bloody. How difficult could it be for Mr Macron to govern? He faces two main problems - a complete lack of representation in parliament and a deeply divided country. 10. The UK's richest 1,000 people "kept calm and carried on making billions" amid the Brexit vote of 2016, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. Their wealth rose by 14% over the past year to a record £658bn, it shows. Brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja, who invest in property, healthcare and oil and gas, top this year's list with £16.2bn - up £3.2bn on 2016. The list includes a record number of British billionaires - 134 - with 14 new ones emerging over the last year. List compiler Robert Watts said: "While many of us worried about the outcome of the EU referendum, many of Britain's richest people just kept calm and carried on making billions." He said a revived stock market had been behind the surge in wealth for the super-rich. Six surprising ways to get rich 'Equities soared' "We expected to see a chilling effect in the run-up to the EU referendum, but that simply did not materialise," Mr Watts said. "A buoyant stock market usually drives the wealth of rich-listers higher, and since last June equities have soared." Of those in the top 20, only the Weston family - Guy, George and Galen Jr - lost money in the last year. They saw their fortune drop by £500m to £10.5bn because of a fall in the share price of Associated British Foods, in which they have a 20.8% stake. The largest increase in wealth went to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who added more than £6bn to his £13.23bn valuation. However, he remains a long way from his 2008 peak of £27.7bn - a Rich List record. Others on the list include: The Duke of Westminster - 26-year-old Hugh Grosvenor - is the only British-born billionaire in the top 10. He became the world's richest under-30 when he inherited the family estate last year Alisher Usmanov, who owns 30% of Arsenal Football Club, added more than £4bn to his £11.79bn fortune Brexit supporter Sir James Dyson, who last year became the first self-made Briton to break the £5bn barrier, this year increased his wealth to £7.8bn Zlatan Ibrahimovic, was the highest new entrant among sports stars with £110m after his move to Manchester United Adele consolidated her position as Britain's wealthiest ever female musician by earning £40m, bringing her assets to £125m Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are all on the list, with Radcliffe on £78m, Watson on £39m and Grint on £28m Mr Watts said: "We're seeing more and more diversity in the composition of the Rich List. "More women, more people from ethnic backgrounds, and more from surprising walks of life, with egg farmers and pet food makers lining up with hedge fund managers and private equity barons." Among those who lost money in this year's list were controversial businessmen Mike Ashley, the founder of Sports Direct, and Sir Philip Green, chairman of the Arcadia Group and the former owner of the collapsed chain store BHS. Ashley's wealth dropped by £270m to £2.16bn after shares in Sports Direct fell, while Sir Philip and Lady Green's wealth dropped by £433m to £2.78bn after he agreed to pay £363m to fund the pensions of former staff at BHS and the value of his stake in Arcadia lowered. It now takes assets of £110m to break into the ranks of the richest 1,000 people in the UK. The figure in 2016 was £103m. The top 20 in the list alone are worth a total of £191.77bn, increasing their wealth by £35.18bn over the past 12 months.

  13. Forty-five people have been sentenced for their part in a landslide in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen that killed 73 people in 2015. Piles of waste soil and construction materials suddenly collapsed, engulfing a nearby district. The manager of the company that ran the landfill site and the former head of Shenzhen's administration bureau were jailed for 20 years. Nearly 20 of those sentenced were government officials. They were convicted of negligence and abuse of power. The dump site had a storage capacity of four million cubic metres and a maximum stacking height of 95m (310 ft) but when the landslide happened it was holding 5.8m cubic metres of material and the waste heaps stood 160m high, Xinhua reported. The landslide covered an area the size of 50 football pitches and more than 200 diggers were brought in to clear the slurry. A week later one official, whose job involved regulating construction sites and who had authorised the landfill site, apparently jumped to his death. It is not clear if he was under investigation.

  15. The company touts the new Surface Arc Mouse to be “slim, light, and ready to travel.” Microsoft also boasts about the easy-to-fit design of the mouse by calling it “designed to conform to your hand.” The new Surface Arc Mouse is similar to the previous Arc Mouse that had an adjustable design to slide into bags easily by becoming flat with the touch of a button and then getting back into the arc shape as per user’s need. Also, the mouse can be used in the flat shape, and it would also save battery. On its online store, Microsoft writes about the new Surface Arc Mouse: The overall design of Surface Arc Mouse is optimized for the most comfortable, natural interaction. Simply snap it into its curved position to power it up, then snap again to flatten and power down. Ultra-slim and lightweight, Surface Arc Mouse, goes anywhere without the weight or bulk of traditional mice. Just snap it flat and easily slip it in your pocket or bag. Microsoft’s new Surface Arc Mouse comes with left-click and right-click buttons. It is available in three color options – Burgundy, Light Grey, and Cobalt Blue. The mouse also features a touch-sensitive ‘scroll plane’ that lets users scroll up and down or left-right by swiping their fingers on the panel. This function is also pretty much like the one we have seen on Apple’s Magic Mouse.
  16. Like the redesigned Audi A5 that was unveiled beside it at the 2016 Paris auto show, the all-new 2018 Audi Q5 is a model that looks a lot like its predecessor. In fact, many may confuse the new-generation Q5 as little more than a facelift—the new car’s side profile and rear-end design, in particular, look nearly identical to the current Q5’s. Fortunately, touches such as a chunky, Q7-inspired grille, LED headlights, and swollen front fenders that flow into the hood help give the 2018 Q5 a fresh-faced look when viewed head-on. Sharing its platform with both the Audi A4 and A5, the Q5 has lost as much as 198 pounds compared with the outgoing model, according to Audi, in spite of a half-inch increase in wheelbase and 1.3 inches more overall length. Most of the additional space from the wheelbase’s growth spurt is dedicated to rear-seat legroom, which is up by 0.4 inch. Audi claims that luggage space has grown as well.Although Audi will offer the Q5 with several powertrains in other markets, our Q5 initially will be available with a single engine choice: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 252 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. Power will be channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to all four wheels via Audi’s latest Quattro all-wheel-drive system with Ultra technology. No longer employing a center differential, the Q5’s system uses two clutches to distribute torque front-to-rear. One is located just aft of the transmission, the other within the rear axle. This setup also allows the Q5 to disengage drive to the rear wheels when it isn’t needed, reducing drag and saving fuel. Although it didn’t take the stage in Paris, a higher-performing SQ5 will debut alongside the Q5 upon its market release in early 2017. Like the new S4 and S5, the SQ5 will be motivated by a 354-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine with a “hot vee” design, with one twin-scroll turbocharger residing between the cylinder banks.Inside, the Q5 benefits from materials and build quality typical of the four-rings brand. An analog gauge cluster is standard, but consumers can opt for Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit LCD screen. Also optional is an 8.3-inch center-mounted infotainment display and MMI Touch, the latter of which can recognize handwriting and common gestures, such as pinching to zoom. Audi has yet to release U.S. pricing for the 2018 Q5, which will be built at a new plant in San José Chiapa, Mexico. The current car’s base price is $41,850, and we don’t expect that figure to change radically with the 2018 model—just as its design hasn’t.
  17. US and South Korean agents are plotting to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, state media report. A statement by the ministry of state security said a terrorist group backed by the CIA and South Korea's intelligence agency had entered the country to attack with a bio-chemical substance. It said North Korea would find and "mercilessly destroy" the terrorists. It comes amid high tensions in the region. The statement, carried by North Korean news agency KCNA, said the alleged plot included the use of "biochemical substances including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance". What's changed between US and N Korea?Trump: I would meet Kim Jong-un The Supreme Leader would have been targeted at a military parade and public procession, with the results not be visible for six to 12 months afterwards, it said. The statement alleges that a North Korean, which it identifies only by the surname "Kim", had been "corrupted and bribed" by South Korean intelligence services while he was working in Russia. It lists several payments made to him, and says on his return to Pyongyang he was instructed to provide detailed information about a frequently used event ground and to assess possible methods of attack. "Korean-style anti-terrorist attack will be commenced from this moment to sweep away the intelligence and plot-breeding organisations of the US imperialists and the puppet clique," the statement says. A war of words between the West and Pyongyang has escalated in recent weeks, with North Korea threatening to carry out a sixth nuclear test. On Saturday North Korea conducted its second failed ballistic missile test in two weeks. The US has sent a warship to the region and installed a controversial anti-missile defence system in South Korea.
