  1. In an auto market with an insatiable appetite for SUVs, Land Rover is a brand uniquely positioned for success. Its growing lineup of luxury SUVs allows Land Rover to touch everything from the high end of the mass market with the Discovery Sport to the rarefied air of the ultra-premium market with the Range Rover Autobiography. And boy, have they capitalized. Since 2014, Land Rover's annual US sales have surged more than 40% from 51,000 vehicles to more than 73,000 in 2016. At the heart of Land Rover's lineup is the trusty Discovery SUV. Since 1989, the mid-size Disco, as it is commonly called, has delivered traditional Land Rover utility with a dose of Range Rover civility at a price point within reach of the middle class. For 2017, Land Rover debuted the all-new fifth generation model, the first complete overhaul of the Discovery in more than a decade. And the first new Discovery under the ownership of India's TATA Group who have reinvigorated Land Rover and sister brand Jaguar since taking over in 2008. Recently, Land Rover dropped off a 2017 Discovery HSE Luxury in a chic silicon silver paint job. The Discovery starts at $49,990 while our high-spec HSE Luxury test car starts at $63,950. With options, our test car left the showroom at $64,945. Here's a closer look at the new fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery For the first time in its history, the Discovery has shed its trademark boxy looks. With the Discovery, Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern decided to redefine the model with an infusion of style. Design elements like the jewel-eye LED headlights and ... .... Sleek lines are new ... .. While the Discovery's signature stepped roofline remains. Under the sleek new sheet metal is an all-new aluminum-intensive platform that makes the Disco a whopping 1,000 pounds lighter than the outgoing LR4 The asymmetrical rear fascia has been a polarizing feature for Business Insider's staff. Some like the distinctiveness of the tailgate, while others found it to be just weird. Under the hood, US-bound Discoveries are powered by either a 340 horsepower, 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 or a 254-horsepower, turbocharged V6 diesel. Our test car came with the gasoline V6. Hooked up to a sensational ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and an advanced four-wheel-drive system, our test car hit 60 mph in a manufacturer claimed time of 6.9 seconds. According to JLR, the V6 diesel can make the run to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. Inside, the Discovery effortlessly blends style with utility. The high-quality interior materials look like they are ready to take on mother nature while the gloss black accents inject an extra dose of panache. The black Windsor leather seats were exceptionally comfortable. Our highly optioned test car came loaded with a wide array of drivers' assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assistance, and driver condition monitor. On the highway, the adaptive cruise control proved to be easy to use. Here's Jaguar Land Rover's distinctive rotary shift knob. It raises when the vehicle is fired up The center console is dominated by Land Rover's electric drive mode controls. In the proper setting, the Discovery can take you just about anywhere. Our test car even came with a chilled cool box. The new Discovery is equipped with a 10-inch touchscreen running Jaguar Land Rover's latest InContol Touch Pro infotainment system. Overall, JLR's new generation infotainment system works well. It's quick, responsive, and easy use. It's packed with functionality, crisply rendered, and ... ... Its menus are intuitively placed. Our car even came with an optional rear-seat entertainment system. It's a neat touch that's becoming much rarer these days with the advent of in-car wifi and streaming video. The Discovery is also available with 4G LTE wi-fi connectivity. However, the InControl Touch Pro has proven to be one of the more fragile infotainment systems we've come across in recent years. The system's satellite radio function failed while my colleague Matt DeBord was behind the wheel of the Discovery. It's the same issue we encountered in the Jaguar F-PACE SUV last year. When we experienced the infotainment issue with the F-Pace, we reached out and received a quick response. The company said the problem was likely software related and that JLR was dealing with it. We reached out again as it's our policy to give OEMs the opportunity to address any problem we consider out-of-the-ordinary, or when more than one of our reviewers experiences the same issue. With that said, the InControl Touch Pro system we experienced in the Discovery showed marked improvement in terms of reliability and operational stability over the unit in our F-PACE test car last year. Overall, the Discovery's cabin comes through on its promise of comfort and functionality. The second-row seats are positively cavernous. The Discovery comes standard with seating for five. Our test car had the optional third-row seat. While its dual sunroofs flood the cabin with light, even for those in the third row. With the second and third-row seats folded down, the Discovery boasts 77 cubic feet of cargo room. To help make loading easier, Land Rover's adjustable air suspension will even dip the rear end of the Discovery to reduce to the amount of work you have to do. The Discovery also came with an Activity Key. It's a waterproof electronic wrist back that allows you to lock and unlock the car simply by tapping the "D" in the Discovery's rear badge. On the road, the Discovery was a pleasure to drive. With that said, you can't drive the Discovery with the same enthusiasm as one would a Range Rover Sport. With its tall stance and high center of gravity, the laws of physics simply won't allow it. Even after its 1,000-pound weight loss, the 4,835 pound Discovery is still not exactly light on its feet. But, under normal driving conditions, the Discovery's easy going demeanor is almost car-like. This is particularly impressive considering the fact that it isn't a crossover, but a rugged SUV with serious off-road street cred. The cabin is quiet and refined while the ride is supple without feeling sluggish. Kudos to the air suspension. The 3.0 liter, supercharged V6 is one of our favorites. It's terrific in the Jaguar F-Type sports car and XF sedan and it's terrific here. The V6 delivered power on demand every time. Unfortunately, fuel economy is not its strong point. The EPA estimates 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway/18 mpg combined fuel economy. Although the diesel option will return better numbers. Our Verdict. The all-new fifth generation Discovery is certainly an ambitious undertaking by what is rightfully an ambitious brand. The Discovery has long been a po[CENSORED]r product for Land Rover, and tweaking the secret sauce is always a risky maneuver. As my colleague Matt DeBord noted, Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern has the unenviable task of producing a design that caters to the brand's wildly divergent client base. These days a Discovery will have to look and feel as at home in front of a luxurious Beverly Hills hotel as it is fighting its way through the Malaysia Jungle. With the new Discovery, Land Rover has its next big hit. The brand's new found style has not compromised substance. Sure, the Discovery is still big and heavy with a kink or two that's yet to be worked out. But, as an overall package, the new Land Rover is fantastic. It's spacious, incredibly comfortable, has great cargo capacity, a gutsy engine, plenty of technology, and Land Rover's go-anywhere four-wheel-drive system. It simply does everything you need a large premium SUV to do. What more can you ask for?

  2. A driver waiting for his electric car to be charged at a station in Beijing. Already the world’s largest maker and buyer of electric cars, China is forcing the rest of the auto industry toward a battery-powered future. Credit Gilles Sabrié for The New York Times SHENZHEN, China — There is a powerful reason that automakers worldwide are speeding up their efforts to develop electric vehicles — and that reason is China. Propelled by vast amounts of government money and visions of dominating next-generation technologies, China has become the world’s biggest supporter of electric cars. That is forcing automakers from Detroit to Yokohama and Seoul to Stuttgart to pick up the pace of transformation or risk being left behind in the world’s largest car market. Beijing has already called for one out of every five cars sold in China to run on alternative fuel by 2025. Last month, China issued new rules that would require the world’s carmakers to sell more alternative-energy cars here if they wanted to continue selling regular ones. A Chinese official recently said the country would eventually do away with the internal combustion engine in new cars. “We are seeing ourselves at a crossroads in the development of the automobile industry in this country, with a global scale in mind,” said Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen’s top executive for VW brand sales and marketing, during a visit to Shanghai. China has reshaped industries before — clothing, steel making, even lace — through a potent mix of government support and cheap labor. More recently it has transformed green-energy businesses like solar and wind power. If China succeeds — and there is no guarantee — Beijing’s policy makers will be front and center reimagining the global auto industry, a business that has helped define communities, industries and people’s aspirations for more than a century. It is a role that was almost inconceivable just a few decades ago, when China was more closely associated with a different type of green transportation: the black, classic Flying Pigeon bicycle. China feels it has little choice in pressing forward. While it is true that electric vehicles fit neatly into China’s plan to become the world leader in sci-fi technology like artificial intelligence, the country also fears a dark future — one where its cities remain cloaked in smog and it is beholden to foreign countries to sell it the oil it needs. Already, China is the world’s largest maker and seller of electric cars. Chinese buyers are on track to snap up almost 300,000 of them this year, three times the number expected to be sold in the United States and more than the rest of the world combined. The country’s market heft is considerable. China buys more General Motors-branded cars than Americans do. Even for Tesla, the still-small American maker of luxury electric sedans, China has become the second-largest market, even though China’s taxes on imported cars are 10 times as high as those in the United States. Tesla officials have said they are considering opening a factory in China. A week ago, G.M. and Ford unveiled plans to add a combined 33 electric models to their lineups. Global manufacturers like G.M. and Volkswagen are also moving much of their research, development and production of electric cars to China. China in turn is pressuring them to share that technology with their Chinese partners. Behind the scenes, China is recruiting some of the world’s best electrical engineering talent, even in the United States. China is also home to many smaller companies that make the parts essential to assembling electric cars. All this comes just as electric cars are finally starting to become competitive with gasoline- or diesel-powered cars on performance and cost. Electric cars are an increasingly common sight in cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. For some drivers here, electric cars are all they know. “I don’t plan to buy a gasoline car, since I heard they are going to be banned for sale,” said Xiong Jianghuai, a lawyer based in Shanghai, who has bought two made by Chery, a Chinese automaker. He said he was delighted that the operating cost was less than one-fifth of the cost of buying gasoline, even if the initial purchase price was a little higher. “I think the future lies in electric cars,” Mr. Xiong said. Many outside China — including some members of President Trump’s administration — say China is using unfair government support to create national champions that could eclipse their rivals abroad. Chinese auto executives say their country is pursuing common-sense policies to develop cutting-edge industries. “In China, the entrepreneurs in the industrial sector are very lucky, because we have the foundation” from the government, said Li Bin, the founder and chairman of the NIO Company, a Chinese electric car manufacturer. “These opportunities are rare or impossible in any other country in the world.” China’s ability to dominate electric cars is not ensured. China’s auto manufacturing skills are considerable, but it has yet to create a single car model that has become po[CENSORED]r abroad. Even in China, most car buyers still prefer Fords, Chevrolets and Volkswagens largely made by government-mandated joint ventures between global and Chinese companies. When it comes to electric cars, most Chinese models are inexpensive and boxy, unlike the sleek lines and looming falcon-wing doors of Tesla’s latest models. Chinese officials have long called for electric cars to be practical, and not just luxuries. “The central government has made a lot of strategies for the development of new energy vehicles,” said Song Qiuling, a deputy director at China’s Finance Ministry. “That is why we have seen the progress and development of new energy vehicles.” Some players have already stumbled. Faraday Future, an electric car company based in the United States but owned by a Chinese company, scaled back after its parent hit hard financial times. China yanked electric-car subsidies away from a number of local companies after an investigation last year showed that many were overstating sales. The environmental benefits may be tough to realize any time soon. Nearly three-quarters of China’s power comes from coal, which emits more climate-changing gases than oil. Even on electricity, China’s cars are still burning dirty. China is also favoring battery electric technology that it can call its own. Foreign automakers already control much of the advanced technology behind fuel-sipping alternatives such as plug-in hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, which runs on both gasoline power and an electric battery. Still, electric cars make particular sense in China. China’s dense and crowded cities often mean shorter driving distances, while its extensive high-speed rail system reduces the need for long-distance road trips. Han Tao discovered the limits of electric cars the hard way. A 35-year-old stock investor in Beijing, he said he ran out of charge in July while driving to Shenzhen, 1,300 miles away. His Chinese-made BYD E6 electric sedan needed a tow. Still, he said, he and his wife prefer the E6 over the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Cruze they bought four years earlier. “It doesn’t have the oily smell and the noise from the engine,” Mr. Han said. “It accelerates way faster than gasoline cars. It feels like you are on a high-speed train.” China’s push for electric cars shows how its industrial ambitions can endure big political shifts. China named a former Audi engineer, Wan Gang, its minister of science and technology in 2007, and he has kept the position and maintained the push despite the emergence of a new slate of Chinese leaders. Wen Jiabao, China’s second-most-powerful official as premier from 2002-12, was an avid supporter of electric cars who came from Tianjin, the center of China’s battery industry. Mr. Wen’s successor as premier, Li Keqiang, has also turned government backing for high-tech industries into his signature accomplishment, while President Xi Jinping has strongly endorsed the effort. “The development of new energy vehicles,” said Xu Chaoqian, a top aide to Mr. Wan, “has received a lot of support from President Xi, Premier Li and others.”

  8. AMSTERDAM - October 9, 2017: Many large cities are looking for concepts to reduce traffic and emissions. The increasing po[CENSORED]rity of Car Sharing offers one way to success. In addition there is the promotion of electric mobility in order to minimize the number of conventionally driven vehicles. Hyundai is now presenting a new car sharing project in Amsterdam, based on a fleet of Hyundai IONIQ electric cars. Why the Dutch city was chosen for this and what makes the IONIQ electric the right vehicle is shown in this video report from Amsterdam: IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid offers up to 39 miles of pure electric driving with a total range of 680 miles. It combines a 105 PS 1.6-liter Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a 61 PS high-efficiency electric motor, driven through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The combined system output is 141 PS. Ultra-low CO2 emissions of just 26g/km means it attracts zero-rate VED in the first year and offers a low BIK rate of just 9% for 2017/18. The new model is available in Premium and Premium SE specification. The former offers a high level of standard equipment, including: 16” alloy wheels, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Smart Cruise Control and an 8-inch integrated satellite navigation unit. Unique to the IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid variant, the navigation system features state-of-the-art ECO-DAS technology. ECO-DAS has predictive energy management that optimises the battery charge and discharge, as well as a coasting guide for the driver, instructing them when to lift off the throttle to use less fuel. 9. note discovered in the hotel room of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock featured hand-written calculations on where he needed to aim to increase his accuracy and number of kills, US network CBS reported on Saturday. The piece of paper was found by police officers who stormed Paddock’s room after he launched his attack from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel on Sunday night – killing 58 people and injuring nearly 500. In an interview set to air on Sunday, Officer David Newton of the Las Vegas Police Department’s K-9 unit, told CBS’ "60 Minutes" he noticed Paddock’s note "on the nightstand near his shooting platform." Stephen Paddock, 64, the gunman who attacked the Route 91 Harvest music festival in a mass shooting in Las Vegas It was "very eerie," he said. Paddock’s hotel suite gave him an ideal perch from which to carry out his attack on a crowd of more than 20,000 people attending a country music concert across the street, some 400 yards away. The note has not shed any light on the gunman’s motives, which authorities are yet to uncover nearly a week after the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history. We still do not have a clear motive or reason why," Undersheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told reporters on Friday, adding that law enforcement was continuing to search for answers with "great tenacity." The shooting has refueled debate on gun control in the US, with even the powerful pro-gun National Rifle Association calling on authorities to review laws surrounding "bump stocks."

Officials urged residents to evacuate some vulnerable areas before the storm made landfall on Saturday evening, and residents scrambled to make last-minute preparations ahead of the third hurricane to hit the southern US in less than two months. But US President Donald Trump said federal officials were ready for the fast-moving storm, urging residents of the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida on Twitter to "listen to your local authorities & be safe!"

  12. It’s impossible to overstate how radical the Honda Accord was when it hit U.S. dealerships in 1976. Fuel-efficient, peppy, and compact yet roomy, it (along with the Civic) did more to legitimize Japanese cars than any car that came before it. With standard features, such as velour seats, intermittent windshield wipers, an AM/FM radio, and a digital clock, the little Honda offered more for thousands less than anything from Detroit automakers. It was built better than its rivals from Detroit, too. Within two years, dealers were marking up prices but still selling out of the cars. And with that, the Accord became a fixture on American roads. But after four decades at the top of the automotive world, the Accord is in dangerous territory. Midsize sedans are a dying breed, as cheap gas and a perceived lack of versatility are sending more buyers to crossovers and SUVs than ever before. In 2017, midsize sedans, once the bread-and-butter of the industry, only account for around 10% of new car sales — and that includes fleet sales to rental car companies. So the 2018 Accord is something of a make-or-break car for Honda. If it does well, the venerable nameplate might live on to see an 11th generation. If it doesn’t, then it could be curtains for the po[CENSORED]r sedan. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2018 Honda Accord. 1. It’s still the ultimate Camry fighter 2018 Honda Accord Touring | Honda It’s no coincidence the new Accord is arriving just as a new Toyota Camry is getting ready to hit the streets. With the Ford Taurus long vanquished, the midsize segment has been dominated by the Camry and Accord for decades. While the Camry has always been the inoffensive one, Toyota promises the latest car will be sportier to try to siphon some sales away from Honda. Only time will tell whether the gamble plays off, but from here it looks like the Camry will have some stiff competition.

  13. North Korean soldiers march during a military parade in Pyongyang, North Korea, April 15, 2017. © Damir Sagolj / Reuters North Korea has called for a nationwide struggle against the US and its “gangster-like moves for domination and aggression.” The statement comes as a US warship approaches the Korean Peninsula for drills with South Korea. “The US gangster-like moves for domination, subjugation, aggression and war are getting evermore reckless and dangerous in the wake of the frenzy of war thirsty [US President Donald] Trump who spat out the remarks of ‘total destruction of North Korea’ without hesitation,” a spokesman for the National Peace Committee of [North] Korea said, as cited by state-run KCNA agency. “The pro-US traitors and confrontation maniacs in South Korea are fanning up such war hysteria of the US,” the statement added. READ MORE: US warship approaches Korean Peninsula for drills with South Korea Pyongyang also slammed the 64-year-old “mutual defense treaty” between the US and South Korea. The treaty, signed in 1953, allows Washington to station military forces in South Korea. The treaty is an “aggressive and traitorous war document” which helps Washington to keep its “imperialist aggression forces” in South Korea, the North said. On Friday, the USS Ronald Reagan, with nearly 80 aircraft on board, was in the South China Sea on its way to the shores of South Korea. The military exercises will likely be held around October 20, South Korean Yonhap News agency reported The US and South Korea will reportedly conduct joint drills to detect, track, and intercept ballistic missiles, in addition to anti-submarine warfare training. Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have been repeatedly exchanging threats recently. On one occasion, Trump said the US would “totally destroy” the North if attacked, and Kim, who he often refers to as ‘Little Rocket Man,’ “won’t be around much longer!” Pyongyang responded in kind, threatening to reduce the US to “ashes and darkness.” In the meantime, Russia and China have repeatedly said that North Korea should freeze its nuclear and missile programs, while the US and South Korea should abstain from holding war games in the region. On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again said that all sides should “ease the rhetoric and find ways for face-to-face dialogue between the United States and North Korea, as well as between North Korea and countries in the region.” “Only this would help find balanced and reasonable decisions,” he added.

  15. The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Ican). Berit Reiss-Andersen, the Nobel committee chair, said it was due to the group's "groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treaty prohibition" on nuclear weapons. "We live in a world where the risk of nuclear weapons being used is greater than it has been for a long time," she continued. She cited the North Korea issue. North Korea-US tensions: How worried should you be? Irish priest nominee praises Ican Why are Nobel laureates getting older? Winners throughout the years In July, after pressure from Ican, 122 nations backed a UN treaty designed to ban and eventually eliminate all nuclear weapons. But none of the nine known nuclear powers in the world - including the UK and the US - endorsed it. Ms Reiss-Andersen called on nuclear-armed states to initiate negotiations to gradually eliminate the weapons. Ican, a coalition of hundreds of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), is 10 years old and is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The group will receive nine million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million, £846,000) along with a medal and a diploma at a ceremony in December. Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the group, told reporters that the prize had come as a surprise but that it was "a huge signal" that the group's work was "needed and appreciated". "The laws of war say that we can't target civilians. Nuclear weapons are meant to target civilians; they're meant to wipe out entire cities," she said, adding: "That's unacceptable and nuclear weapons no longer get an excuse. "It's a giant radioactive bomb, it just causes chaos and havoc and civilian casualties. It is not a weapon that you can use in line with the laws of war. "Every state matters here. The more states that sign and ratify this treaty the stronger the norm is going to get. They're not moving towards disarmament fast enough." The Nobel prize citation read: "Some states are modernising their nuclear arsenals, and there is a real danger that more countries will try to procure nuclear weapons, as exemplified by North Korea." North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has launched a series of rockets and a nuclear test this year, leading to an escalating war of words with US President Donald Trump. Mr Trump, who commands one of the world's most powerful nuclear arsenals, threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if his country is forced to defend itself or its allies. What did N Korea's nuclear tests achieve? Last year's winner, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, said the peace prize was "like a gift from heaven" as his government tried to negotiate a deal with the main rebel group, the Farc. The alternative approach to nuclear weapons Analysis by the BBC's Jonathan Marcus The Nobel Committee's decision provides a powerful and timely reinforcement of the opprobrium and concern attached to nuclear weapons. It comes at a moment when North Korea is actively developing its nuclear programme, the fate of the Iran nuclear deal is in the balance, and the US and Russia are both actively seeking to modernise their nuclear forces. There is of course already the Non-Proliferation Treaty under which most countries agreed never to develop nuclear weapons and those that already had them agreed progressively to disarm. But campaigners have long been unsatisfied with this process insisting that the nuclear "haves" have no intention of giving up their arsenals. So ICAN set about an alternative approach - to raise po[CENSORED]r awareness of the issue and to pressure governments to open up a new treaty for signature earlier this year that would seek an outright ban on nuclear weapons. Who are Ican? a coalition group supported by hundreds of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in over 100 countries across the world formed in 2007, inspired by a similar campaign to ban the use of landmines worldwide supporters include actor Michael Sheen, artist Ai Weiwei and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon its lobbying encouraged the UN to adopt the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons earlier this year which has been signed by 53 countries so far How the prize is decided Eligible nominators from around the world can put forward candidates up to 1 February of the award year, while Nobel Committee members have more time All nominations are reviewed by the committee - whose five members are chosen by the Norwegian parliament - before a shortlist of 20-30 candidates are selected A group of Norwegian and international advisers write individual reports on the shortlisted candidates. Using these and further reports, the committee narrows the selection down to a handful A decision is reached in the last meeting of the committee, usually in late September or early October, before the prize is announced If a unanimous decision cannot be reached, a simple majority vote is used After the announcement, the award ceremony takes place on 10 December, the date of Alfred Nobel's death

LAS VEGAS — Days after this week’s shooting, students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas said something still did not feel right on campus. “There’s a little bit less energy because of what has happened and people are still processing as to why it happened,” Angela Borro, a first year biology student and immigrant from the Philippines, said. A memorial of flowers and candles has been set up in the plaza outside the Student Union building on campus to show solidarity and support for the victims of the shooting and their families. Students stop by and pray. Others take photos and reflect on the tragedy. Route 91 Festival goers, tourists and residents of Las Vegas placed candles, flowers, banners and photos of their loved ones at the shrine on the median just across the street from shooting site at the country music festival. Reality shifts for some Borro who also works at a store on the Las Vegas Strip said she will not avoid it because of what happened. “No, because if I’m afraid then that just shows that whoever did this is winning, and I don’t want to show them that I’m afraid of all this violence,” she said. However, for students such as Rodrigo Martinez, reality changed overnight. “We question now if we’re even safe at school,” Martinez, a third year construction management student, said. When not at school, Martinez works for a food delivery service. He said he has to go to the casinos for his job, and he approaches the Las Vegas Strip differently now. “Very cautious going to casinos and the Strip. Don’t want to be there too long now,” Martinez said. “I’ve completely avoided the strip since then (the shooting),” said Daniel Shin, a Korean-American who is studying hospitality. “Seeing all this senseless violence happening does take a toll on you, but the American people are strong, and this is just a trial for them,” Borro said. Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, demonstrates how a little-known device called a "bump stock" is attached to a semi-automatic rifle at the Gun Vault store and shooting range, Oct. 4, 2017, in South Jordan, Utah. Could violence be avoided? Many foreign students and long-time Las Vegas residents believe the violence could have been avoided. “In America, it’s very easy to purchase firearms, and because of that the number of casualties can climb real quick in a number of hours,” architecture student Chozen Takei from Vietnam said. “I think the government should definitely change some of the laws about gun control because I don’t think individuals should own any type of assault weapon like a rifle, shotgun. Those weapons are made for wars. It’s not something individuals should have in their house. You don’t need an AK-47 to defend yourself. All you need is a handgun,” architecture student Richard Li from China said. Michael Degen works as a food and linens subcontractor on campus and is a gun owner. He said there should be tougher gun laws and more security on the Vegas Strip. “I feel that the hotels and casinos may have to make changes now on how they’re checking in their baggage,” Degen said. In the midst of this tragedy, the students said they are appreciating the important things in life. “I’m just thankful to God that I’m alive,” Martinez said.
