Iran’s supreme leader has presided over a funeral for the country’s late president, foreign minister and others killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers at Tehran University, where caskets carrying the dead were draped in Iranian flags. President Ebrahim Raisi died alongside Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others in a helicopter crash near the border with Azerbaijan. Authorities had warned against demonstrations against the funeral procession and insults posted online. “Oh Allah, we didn’t see anything but good from him,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in the standard prayer for the dead in Arabic. Iran’s acting president, Mohammad Mokhber, stood nearby and openly wept during the service. People then carried the coffins out on their shoulders, with chants of “Death to America” heard outside. They loaded them onto a trailer for a procession through downtown Tehran to Azadi Square, where Mr Raisi gave speeches in the past. In attendance were top leaders of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, one of the country’s major power centres. Also on hand was Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, the militant group that Iran has armed and supported during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Haniyeh is widely considered Hamas's overall leader and has been a prominent member of the movement since 1980. The US Department of State designated him a terrorist in 2018. “I come in the name of the Palestinian people, in the name of the resistance factions of Gaza...to express our condolences,” Mr Haniyeh said. He also described meeting Raisi in Tehran during Ramadan, the holy Muslim fasting month. He said he heard the president say that "the Palestinian issue" remains the key one of the Muslim world, which "must fulfil their obligations to the Palestinians to liberate their land". He also claimed that Raisi called Hamas' October 7 attack in Israel, which saw 1,200 people killed and 250 others taken hostage, an "earthquake in the heart of the Zionist entity". Also expected to attend services in Tehran were Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a delegation from the Taliban of Afghanistan, which included their Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaqqi. Iran’s theocracy declared five days of mourning over Sunday’s crash, encouraging people to attend the public mourning sessions. Typically, government employees and schoolchildren attend such events en masse, while others take part out of patriotism, curiosity or to witness historic events. For Iran’s Shiite theocracy, mass demonstrations have been crucial to demonstrating the legitimacy of their leadership since millions thronged the streets of Tehran to welcome Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution, and also attended his funeral 10 years later. An estimated one million turned out in 2020 for processions for the late Revolutionary Guard General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad. Across the capital, large banners were raised hailing Raisi as "the martyr of service", while others bade "farewell to the servant of the disadvantaged". Some residents in Tehran received texts urging them to attend Wednesday's ceremonies, the AFP news agency reported. Footage carried by state TV showed streets filled with mourners, many of whom were carrying pictures of Mr Raisi or the Iranian flag. Funeral rites for the men began on Tuesday in the city of Tabriz and the Shiite clerical centre of Qom, where thousands of mourners attended ceremonies. After Wednesday's procession in the capital, Raisi's remains will be moved to South Khorasan province, before being transferred to his home city of Mashhad in the northeast. He will then be buried on Thursday evening in the city after funeral rites at the Imam Reza shrine. Raisi, a hardline cleric, was a highly divisive figure in Iran. In the 1980s, he oversaw the execution of scores of opposition activists while working as a prosecutor. He unleashed a brutal crackdown against demonstrators angered by the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in 2022. She died three days after she was detained by morality police in the capital for allegedly violating Iran's strict rules requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab, or headscarf. But his ultra-conservative outlook won favour with supporters of the regime, and Mr Raisi was viewed as a possible successor to Ayatollah Khamenei. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c7223epn3jdo

Alpine's assault on the U.S. market will include an electric successor to the A110 sports car. An electric A310 four-door will also do battle with the Porsche Taycan, and there will be a pair of SUVs. Alpine is also exploring hydrogen combustion, most recently with the four-cylinder Alpenglow Hy4 concept. Last year, French sports-car brand Alpine—which is owned by Renault—announced that it would enter the U.S. market in 2027 and outlined an array of electric vehicles on the horizon. Now Alpine has revealed a more specific road map for the United States, and the brand's stateside foray will be led by an electric coupe and convertible. Alpine's future was revealed by Renault CEO Luca de Meo at the company's 2024 Annual General Meeting, as reported by Carbuzz. Seven EVs are en route and are geared to help give the brand a global reach, with the goal of having 50 percent of Alpine sales occur outside Europe by 2030. The flagship will be an electric sports car that will serve as a successor to the gas-powered A110, set to be discontinued soon, and is confirmed for the United States. The A110 EV should arrive starting in 2026 and will face off against the upcoming Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster EVs. Alpine will also revive the A310 name, and rumors suggest it will emerge as a slinky four-door to face off against the Porsche Taycan in 2028. But the bread and butter of Alpine in the United States will be two SUVs. A compact model, reportedly called the A390, will likely share its platform with the Nissan Ariya when it arrives in 2027, while the larger A490 is rumored to take on a more wagon-like shape like that of the Taycan Cross Turismo. Alpine is also exploring hydrogen-powered cars and recently revealed the Alpenglow Hy4 concept, a dramatic Le Mans–inspired racer. It's powered by a 340-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that combusts hydrogen instead of gasoline. A larger V-6 is reportedly in development, and Alpine has hinted that the Alpenglow could reach limited production, according to Autocar. Alpine is poised to reveal the electric A290 hot hatch this summer, previewed by an eye-catching concept, but this will not come to America. Still, the brand will have a diverse lineup as it tries to break into the U.S. market later this decade. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60861160/alpine-electric-a110-america/

Sold-out assuré. https://www.vogue.fr/article/bella-hadid-tendance-bikini-ete-2024-with-jean#intcid=_vogue-fr-right-rail_c51c39ca-0075-4c11-9a5a-cb6aade933b8_po[CENSORED]r4-1

Success consists of going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm. So goes the aphorism attributed (probably wrongly) to Winston Churchill. Whatever the provenance of the quote, these organisms have taken the message to heart. They’ve surmounted disease, starvation, predation, and human intervention to become the most populous species of their respective taxonomic categories, evincing an unwavering enthusiasm for reproduction and a terrifying degree of fecundity. Of course, it is impossible to obtain exact po[CENSORED]tion counts for many creatures, especially those with secretive or nocturnal lifestyles or those that are almost ubiquituous. So, some of these are merely inferences based on the breadth of a particular species’ range or on other extrapolations from the best available information. I’ve ignored invasive species, and, especially, domesticated species, some of which number well into the billions. It hardly comes as a surprise that ants are the most numerous insect in the world. These colonial hymenopterans may number from 10-100,000 trillion individuals globally; there are more than 10,000 species. The springtails, or Collembola, used to hold the title, but they are no longer officially insects, but rather part of a larger subphylum that includes insects and several related creatures. Though a few species are considered pests, ants are hugely benefical in most environments, spreading seeds and disposing of detritus as they forage for food. https://www.britannica.com/list/abundant-animals-the-most-numerous-organisms-in-the-world

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent after one season at Stamford Bridge. Pochettino, 52, took charge of Chelsea on 1 July, signing a two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. The Argentine was under pressure after an underwhelming first half of the season but a run of five successive wins to end the season ensured they finished sixth in the Premier League. Chelsea were also runners-up in the Carabao Cup and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. "Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity," Pochettino said. "The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come." Chelsea will now search for a successor and have expressed recent interest in Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim and Burnley’s Vincent Kompany. A return for former managers Jose Mourinho or Thomas Tuchel is not on the cards as the club targets a young head coach. Pochettino was Chelsea's sixth permanent manager in five years, following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, which led to Frank Lampard taking charge on a temporary basis at the end of the 2022-23 season. "On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season," sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said. "He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career." Coaches Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez and Sebastiano Pochettino have also left. Pochettino, whose tenure ended just short of 12 months, is understood to have departed on very amicable terms; he felt leaving was the right decision following discussions with senior club officials. He had been seen as the man to mould Chelsea into credible title contenders again after their £747m expenditure on transfers during the 2022-23 campaign. The Argentine also enjoyed a significant budget, with a further £400m-plus spent on players, including Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Moises Caicedo and Christopher Nkunku. Chelsea have spent more than £1bn on transfers since Todd Boehly's takeover in May 2022, and were described by Sky Sports pundit and former England defender Gary Neville as "billion-pound bottle-jobs" after losing the Carabao Cup final against a weakened Liverpool side. In March, Pochettino, who led Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2018-19, addressed booing from some sections of the Stamford Bridge crowd, who chanted the name of former manager Jose Mourinho during a 2-2 draw with Brentford. He said: "Maybe if I was a fan, I'd be the same because we are not matching the expectation." He appeared to win back some support following a 6-0 thrashing of Everton in April and a 5-0 victory against West Ham in May, although Chelsea did fall to a 5-0 loss at Arsenal in between those two results. While there will be shock among some fans, Pochettino was booed on several occasions this season. There will not be any mutiny at another managerial change. Pochettino struggled to win over supporters, with positive comments about his former club Tottenham, his calm demeanour and mixed results all contributing to an indifferent atmosphere among fans, with many disliking the Argentine. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c1ww8xw8nywo

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has suggested he will work with lawmakers on potential sanctions against the International Criminal Court as its prosecutor seeks arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials. Mr Blinken told a congressional hearing he was "committed" to taking action against the "profoundly wrong-headed decision". His comments come amid a Republican push to impose sanctions on ICC officials, which may see a vote as soon as this week. The United States is not a member of the court but has backed previous prosecutions, including the ICC's arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine. At a Tuesday hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, James Risch, its top Republican, asked whether Mr Blinken would support legislation to address the ICC "sticking its nose in the business of countries that have an independent, legitimate, democratic judicial system". "We want to work with you on a bipartisan basis to find an appropriate response. I'm committed to doing that," the secretary of state said. Mr Blinken said "there's no question we have to look at the appropriate steps to take to deal with, again, what is a profoundly wrong-headed decision". The ICC's chief prosecutor Karim Khan announced on Monday that he had applied for arrest warrants against Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Mr Khan is also seeking arrest warrants for three Hamas officials - Yahya Sinwar, its leader in Gaza, Mohammed Deif, the commander of its Qassam Brigades military wing, and Ismail Haniyeh, the head of its political bureau. US President Joe Biden said on Monday it was "outrageous" to apply for arrest warrants. There was "no equivalence - none - between Israel and Hamas", he added. Mr Blinken's remarks echoed the broader pushback in Washington over the court's decision. At least two measures imposing sanctions on the ICC had already been introduced in Congress as the court ramped up its inquiry into Israel's handling of the war in Gaza. Support on Capitol Hill appears to be coalescing around a bill launched earlier this month by Texas Republican Chip Roy. The Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act would target ICC officials involved with the case by blocking their entry to the US, revoking any current US visas they hold, and prohibiting them from any property transactions within the country - unless the court ceases its cases against "protected persons of the United States and its allies". At least 37 lawmakers in the Republican-led House are now co-sponsoring the legislation, including Elise Stefanik, the chamber's third highest-ranking Republican. Ms Stefanik is fresh off a visit to Israel, where she met with Mr Netanyahu, spoke at the Knesset and met with the families of hostages trapped in Gaza. The court "equivocates a peaceful nation protecting its right to exist with radical terror groups that commit genocide", she told the BBC in a statement. Andy Barr of Kentucky, another Republican supporting the bill, said further pursuit of the ICC's case against Israel must "be met with the full force of our sanctions". Less clear, however, is whether Democratic lawmakers will get behind the effort. The party's moderate and liberal wings have grappled with Mr Biden's Israel policy for months, as young progressive voters have pushed the president to more sharply criticise the Netanyahu government's operations in Gaza. Ohio's Greg Landsman, one of a few Democrats who voted last week to reverse Mr Biden's pause on a weapons shipment to Israel, told the BBC he hopes Congress will issue a bipartisan rebuke of the ICC "to send the strongest message possible". "The decision [to seek arrest warrants] will only further inflame tensions and divisions, embolden anti-Israel conspiracies, and ultimately, it will undermine the credibility of the ICC," he said in a statement. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson urged Chuck Schumer, the Senate's top Democrat, to sign a letter on Tuesday inviting Mr Netanyahu to address a joint meeting of Congress. In March, Mr Schumer called for new elections in Israel but he described the ICC's case on Monday as "reprehensible". Sen Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told the BBC that he was unsure about moves to sanction ICC officials. "I'm not there yet imposing sanctions on the ICC, as opposed to looking to see whether the off ramp of a ruling by the judges of the ICC that they're not going to proceed with warrants is something I think may come in the next couple of days," the Democrat said. But Mr Coons added that he is discussing taking action with his committee colleagues from both parties. But some left-wing Democrats have expressed their support for the ICC's actions. Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar said the court's allegations are "significant" and the US must support its work as it has done on past occasions, including in the case of Libya. "The application for arrest warrants is merely the beginning of a judicial process," she wrote in a statement on Monday. "The ICC has been a functioning court – it has seen convictions, acquittals, and dismissals, as we would expect from an impartial and non-political judicial body." It remains unclear whether any sanction efforts have yet gathered the support needed to advance through either the Republican-led House or the Democrat-controlled Senate. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday that administration officials were discussing "next steps" with lawmakers. Watching from across the world in Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that its adversary's "attitude and willingness to use sanctions methods even against the ICC" was "more than curious". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp66e6ppzd0o
