The dog looks up at Mark with pitiful eyes, as if he was abandoned. Mark decides to walk with the dog. As they walk, the dog barks at a bush nearby. Mark was wary of what he might find in the bushes. He was sure that it was something dangerous, which was why the animal had been so aggressive. As he neared the bush, he caught a glimpse of what was inside and quickly ripped it open. He was surprised at first the he understood why the dog brought him to the bush. The snowfall had caused a great deal of disruption to the city, and Mark had been fortunate enough to have his work within walking distance. No one should be out in the cold, yet Mark was about to encounter an unfortunate creature that had been out. It was late afternoon and he was coming home from work. The wind was really cold and he was in a lot of pain. He hadn’t been out in a while and was thinking about calling in sick for the week. Just as he was about to hide behind a big tree, he saw something move in the snow – it was still too far away for him to make out what it was, but it was definitely not a person. It wasn’t until it came closer that he realized it was a small dog, and his heart sank. https://thefamilybreeze.com/categories/en/snow-dog/2/

It is almost 12 months since Jack Grealish stood at the front of the Manchester City bus in the pouring rain, arms out, top off, taking in the adulation of the fans who turned out to hail their Treble-winning heroes. Grealish was the star of the show, taking to the microphone as he stood with his team-mates on stage to admit he hadn’t slept for 24 hours, in the gap between conquering Europe in Istanbul and getting soaked in front of thousands in Manchester. It was entertaining to see Kalvin Phillips pour liquid from a bottle straight into his mouth, Gazza-style, as the party began. Grealish had earned this frivolity. As City closed in on a historic Treble, the 28-year-old, who became the most expensive player in English football history when City signed him from Aston Villa for £100m in 2021, had played a central role. He had started the crucial Premier League game against Arsenal on 28 April, played every minute as City destroyed Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, 89 out of 90 minutes in the FA Cup final success against Manchester United and finally, the entire match as City beat Inter Milan to lift the Champions League for the first time. Grealish was at the top of his game, justifying City's spend on him and why coaches at Manchester United had wanted the England international themselves. Grealish was centre stage in another City parade last month, almost tripping up at the front of the bus, which could have had disastrous consequences. Yet somehow, it doesn’t seem quite so amusing - not now that Grealish has missed out on selection for the Euros, to the benefit of West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and young trio Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze. It is possibly no surprise - if City boss Pep Guardiola wasn’t picking Grealish, why should England manager Gareth Southgate? Grealish featured for 10 minutes for City in May against Wolves, when he came on with his team already 4-1 up. He remained on the bench as City beat Tottenham and West Ham to become the first team in England to win the title in four successive seasons and, when Guardiola needed someone to try to turn the FA Cup final around at Wembley, the attacking players he brought on were Jeremy Doku and Julian Alvarez. Grealish got no further than a warm-up. “Devastated” was Southgate’s assessment of how Grealish was when he gave him the bad news. “Gutted” was long-time team-mate and close friend Declan Rice’s view. Rice sensed something was wrong when he saw Grealish on the phone as he was getting treatment. “He told me over lunch he had been left out,” the Arsenal midfielder told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I am gutted. We are best friends. He is like a brother, someone you sit with every day, go in the hot tub with and now they are gone.” Southgate didn’t want to go into a detailed assessment of what has gone wrong for Grealish this season, stating firmly "it wouldn’t be fair" to talk about the bigger picture. But two aspects did shine through. Firstly, he sensed the shock his choice would create. “It is a tough call. You go over and over and over to try to be sure,” he said. “You deliberate and ask all the questions. We could have gone a different route. All players believe they should be in, that is why they are top players. They are big characters and it is sad to have to deliver the news.” But in the brutal world of football management, Grealish’s massive transfer fee and 36 caps counts for nothing. “Other players had a stronger end to the season,” Southgate added. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c2xxpkk3gvxo

What an extraordinary own goal. Like so many of the clearest, most stark stories, two pictures do almost all of the talking. For days, the leaders' teams for the Conservatives and Labour had been telling me things would be different on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Politics would take a backseat, the focus would be on the D-Day commemorations. It did, and it was. Until that is, it wasn’t. Rishi Sunak’s decision to leave the most photographed, remarked upon and most poignant event in Europe early was always likely to be spotted. And so it was, with the bloke who did his job eight years ago, Lord Cameron, playing 'I’m not a leader' gooseberry in a photo with three actual leaders - the presidents of the United States, and France and the Chancellor of Germany. Rishi Sunak was instead hurtling back to the UK to get stuck back into campaigning - recording a lengthy interview with ITV. We know that because ITV released an extract of it last night, in which the prime minister insisted he hadn’t lied about Labour’s tax plans. Yes, that’s right - the prime minister left D-Day events early in order not to apologise for misleading claims about his opponents, only to apologise for leaving early in the first place. Labour, inevitably, are leaping on this, and pointing out Sir Keir Starmer stayed until the end. And the details matter here because Rishi Sunak was involved in the vast majority of the commemorations. Alongside the King and Sir Keir, Mr Sunak was at the British event at Ver Sur Mer. But he wasn’t at the event later at Omaha Beach. That is where Sir Keir was pictured with the Ukrainian President Zelensky. A Labour source told me: "What does it say about his judgement that he got this one so badly wrong? It should have been blatantly obvious there was only one place to be yesterday," adding: "It’s just more desperate stuff. Shows the chaos they’re in." Of course, they would say that wouldn’t they? But about-turns and unequivocal apologies like this are very rare - particularly in election campaigns. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4nnz0w41kvo

Gunmen have killed the female mayor of a town in Mexico just hours after the country celebrated the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the nation's first woman president. Yolanda Sánchez was shot in the town of Cotija, which she had governed since September 2021. She was the first woman to be elected to the post. Widespread violence against politicians has overshadowed Mexico's general election, which saw two women run for the presidency. Yolanda Sánchez was ambushed by gunmen in the centre of Cotija, Michoacán, on Monday. Local media say she was shot 19 times and died in hospital shortly after the attack. Her bodyguard was also killed in the gun battle. No arrests have been made so far in connection with the attack but it is widely thought that the gunmen belonged to an organised crime group. Ms Sánchez had reported receiving death threats after taking up office in September 2021. She was held for three days by armed men who had seized her at gunpoint during a visit to the neighbouring state of Jalisco in 2023. The politician said that her kidnappers had made "demands" and inflicted "psychological terror" before releasing her. While she said that she did not know what criminal group they belonged to, local newspapers said the most likely culprits where the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG). The CJNG engages in drug trafficking as well as kidnapping for ransom and extortion. It is also infamous for targeting public officials who refuse to do its bidding. Ms Sánchez had said that the men who had threatened her after she had taken office had demanded that she hand the security of the town over to state police officers in the pay of organised crime groups. She refused and asked for the military to reinforce the town. The mayor was also provided with armed bodyguards after the incident. Her murder on Monday came less than a day after a general election that was overshadowed by the murder of local candidates. More than 20 people running for office have been killed since September according to official figures, but independent surveys have put the number closer to 40. The presidential race was won by Claudia Sheinbaum, who will be sworn in on 1 October as the first woman to hold the top office in Mexico. Ms Sheinbaum's defeated rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, has been critical of the violence which marred the campaign. Ms Gálvez said that when she called Ms Sheinbaum on Monday, she told her that "I saw a Mexico with a lot of pain and violence. I wished that she could solve the severe problems our people have”. While Ms Gálvez conceded defeat after Ms Sheinbaum's unassailable lead in the polls was announced, she has since described the campaign for the presidency as an "unequal competition against the entire state apparatus dedicated to favouring its candidate". She also said that she would challenge Ms Sheinbaum's win without specifying how she would do that. With more than 95% of the votes tallied in the preliminary count, Ms Sheinbaum had a lead of over 31 percentage points over Ms Gálvez. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c166n3p6r49o

Toyota is recalling 102,000 vehicles, with both the Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX affected for the 2022 and 2023 model years. The recall stems from machining debris left in the engine during the manufacturing process, which can cause crankshaft main bearing failure. This in turn can cause engine knocking, an inability to start, or loss of power while driving. Toyota is recalling approximately 102,000 vehicles for potential engine failure, with the recall affecting both the Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX from the 2022 and 2023 model years. The recall is only for the purely gas-powered models and does not affect the hybrid powertrains. Detritus in the engine can lead to a loss of power for the engine, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall affects vehicles equipped with the V35A engine, a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 that is offered with varying power outputs across the Tundra and LX lineups. The NHTSA documents explain that engine machining debris might not have been removed from the engine during the production process. In affected vehicles, if the debris adheres to the crankshaft main bearings and "operation of the eyeing continues at higher loads over time," the bearings can fail. This can lead to engine knocking, rough running, an inability to start, or a loss of power. Losing power at higher speeds "can increase the risk of a crash." The Tundra is also offered with a hybrid powertrain that uses the V35A V-6 engine, but the hybrid model is not included in this recall. NHTSA notes that if a hybrid vehicle experiences an engine failure, it will still have "some motive power for limited distances" and the driver will be warned with audio and visual messages. Toyota says it is currently working on a solution for the issue and that it will notify owners of affected vehicles by late July. All owners will be provided a repair at no cost under warranty, and owners can also check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is affected. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60992514/toyota-tundra-lexus-lx-engine-recall/

Tottenham have agreed a deal to extend Timo Werner's spell from RB Leipzig until the end of next season. The Germany forward made 14 appearances in all competitions and scored twice for Spurs after joining them on a temporary basis from the Bundesliga side in January. Under that arrangement Tottenham had the option to sign the 28-year-old permanently for £15m this summer, however, the new agreement will contain an £8.5m option to buy. Werner proved a useful addition to the Tottenham squad last term, bolstering manager Ange Postecoglou's attacking choices until a hamstring injury ruled him out of the final five Premier League matches of the campaign. Spurs eventually finished fifth and will compete in the Europa League next season. Werner has 24 goals from his 57 Germany caps, but last played for his country in a friendly defeat by Belgium in March 2023. He also scored 23 goals in 89 appearances during a two-year spell at Chelsea, winning the Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup, before rejoining Leipzig in 2022. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c1vvr74y9veo

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have squared off in their first televised encounter of the general election campaign so far. Here’s what you need to know from the hour-long debate on ITV. 1. The prime minister went on the attack Rishi Sunak has been in office for over a year and a half, and his party has been in power for 14 years. But at times Mr Sunak sounded like the man in opposition, repeatedly challenging his Labour counterpart for answers over how he would enact his policies. This included questions about how Sir Keir would resolve the NHS junior doctors' strike and lower levels of illegal migration. At times it got quite heated, with the prime minister speaking over Julie Etchingham, the ITV host, to ask his own questions of his opponent. 2. Starmer invoked Liz Truss to hit back In response, the Labour leader tried to pull the focus back to the Tory record in government, adding Mr Sunak was "ashamed of the last 14 years". He was also very keen to talk about someone not in the studio: Mr Sunak's immediate predecessor in No 10, Liz Truss. The Labour leader brought up the former PM's ill-fated 49-day premiership just seven minutes in, and made regular references to it as the debate continued. This included talking about her during a section of the debate when he was asked how he would resolve the long-running NHS doctors' strike. But Sir Keir also sought to highlight frozen tax thresholds under the current government, branding the prime minister the "British expert on tax rises”. 3. They embraced the personal The two leaders traded barbs over what they did before politics - with Sir Keir attacking the PM's former career at a hedge fund, and Mr Sunak responding in kind with a dig over the Labour leader's time as a lawyer. But they were also keen to talk about their own backstories, as they tried to empathise with members of the audience and strike a chord with viewers at home. Mr Sunak talked about the fact his dad was a GP and his mum a pharmacist during a section on the NHS. The Labour leader also brought up the fact his mum was a nurse. Sir Keir also deployed his background when asked about the cost of living, talking about how the phone in his home was cut off when he was young. And there was also a reference to the prime minister's wealth - telling the audience at one point he “lives in a different world”. A notable moment of difference came when both leaders were asked whether they would use private healthcare if a loved one were on a long waiting list for surgery. Mr Sunak said he would, but Sir Keir said he wouldn't. And the Labour leader again talked about his family to illustrate the point. "I don't use private health. I use the NHS. That's where my wife works, in one of the big hospitals; as I said it runs through my DNA," he added. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cz55pm66lgko
