President Joe Biden has warned Israel that the US will stop supplying some weapons if it launches a major ground operation in the Gaza city of Rafah. "If they go into Rafah, I'm not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah," he said during an interview with CNN. He added that he would "continue to make sure Israel is secure". Despite firm and vocal US opposition, Israel appears poised to mount a large-scale invasion of Rafah. The congested part of southern Gaza is Hamas's last major stronghold in the territory. US officials have warned that an operation in the city - where the po[CENSORED]tion has swelled with refugees from other parts of Gaza - could lead to extensive civilian casualties. "We're not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells," Mr Biden said in the interview, which aired on Wednesday. Israel's ambassador to the UN said the country was "very disappointed" by Mr Biden's intervention. "If Israel is restricted from entering an area as important and central as Rafah where there are thousands of terrorists, hostages and leaders of Hamas, how exactly are we supposed to achieve our goals?" he said on public radio. Mr Biden told CNN that the US did not define the current situation in Rafah as a ground operation. "They haven't gone into the po[CENSORED]tion centres. What they did is right on the border," he said. "But I've made it clear to [Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu] and the war cabinet, they're not going to get our support, if in fact they go in these po[CENSORED]tion centres Mr Biden acknowledged that US weapons had been used by Israel to kill civilians in Gaza. When asked if Israel had crossed a "red line", the US president replied "not yet". The comments amount to the president's strongest warning yet over a potential ground invasion of Rafah, and mark the first time he has said the US could stop shipments of American weapons to Israel. The US has already delayed a shipment of thousands of bombs to Israel, and has said it is reviewing future deliveries. On Wednesday, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the delay of the bomb shipment - some of the most destructive munitions in Western military arsenals - while testifying in front of the Senate. The weapons being held back by the US are related to a future delivery, so the move is unlikely to have an immediate impact. But given the rate at which Israel is bombing it will probably affect future strikes fairly soon. The Israeli military, meanwhile, has said that the two countries will resolve disagreements "behind closed doors". President Biden faces mounting domestic pressure - from some Democrats and parts of the US public - to rein in Israeli operations in Gaza amid rising civilian deaths and a worsening humanitarian situation. With November's presidential election looming, opinion polls indicate many young voters and Arab-Americans in key states such as Michigan are critical of what they see as the president's support for the Israeli war effort. US officials confirmed that no new aid supplies had been delivered in Gaza via two gates in the south since Israeli tanks rolled into southern Rafah and took control of the Palestinian side of the crossing with Egypt this week. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68980820

France striker Kylian Mbappe says he will leave Paris St-Germain at the end of the season. Mbappe, 25, announced the decision in a video released on his social media, external accounts. "I’ve always said that I would speak with you when the time comes," Mbappe said. "It's my last year at Paris St-Germain. I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks." Mbappe's contract with PSG expires in June and BBC Sport reported in February that he has agreed a deal to join Real Madrid in the summer. The World Cup winner is PSG's record goalscorer with 255 goals and will play his final home game at the Parc des Princes against Toulouse in Ligue 1 on Sunday at 20:00 BST. After that PSG have away fixtures at Nice (15 May) and Metz (19 May) before the French Cup final against Lyon at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille on 25 May. Paris-born Mbappe, who joined PSG from Monaco for £165.7m in August 2017, said the club helped "grow as a player" and "grow as a man as well". He added: "It's a lot of emotions, many years where I had the chance and the great honour to be a member of the biggest French club, one of the best in the world. "It allowed me to arrive here, to have my first experience in a club with a lot of pressure, to grow as a player of course, by being alongside some of the best in history, some of the greatest champions. "It's hard and I never thought it would be this difficult to announce that. But I think I needed this, a new challenge, after seven years." How have we got here? Mbappe was set to leave PSG on a free transfer at the end of the 2021-22 season but ultimately signed a two-year contract extension, with the option of a further year. However, after Mbappe told PSG he would not agree to the additional 12 months of the deal, he was not selected for their pre-season tour to Japan last July. He subsequently refused to meet with representatives of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who made a world record £259m offer for him. He later returned to first-team training following what PSG said were "very constructive and positive" talks. Mbappe met PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi on 13 February and told him he was leaving and joining Real. It was anticipated Mbappe would make an announcement over his future when it was no longer possible for PSG to meet Real in this season's Champions League. PSG suffered a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals earlier this week as Mbappe struggled to make an impact in both legs of the tie. Mbappe acknowledged in his video message he was "not the most demonstrative player" and "hasn't always lived up to the love" PSG fans gave him. "PSG is a club that never leaves anyone indifferent. We can love it or hate it and I made the choice of loving it and I did for seven years," Mbappe said. "I do not regret, at any moment, signing with this prestigious club. It is a club I will keep in my memory my entire life." BBC Sport understands Mbappe is set to sign a five-year deal with Real. He is set to earn £12.8m (15m euros) a season, plus a £128m (150m euros) signing-on bonus to be paid over five years. He will keep a percentage of his image rights. Real manager Carlo Ancelotti, who guided the La Liga club to this season's Champions League final at Wembley, has already thought how he will use Mbappe in his team. England midfielder Jude Bellingham playing a deeper role, Brazilian Vinicius Jr playing on the left and Mbappe playing left of centre. If Croatia midfielder Luka Modric leaves this summer, then Mbappe would inherit the number 10 shirt he wears for France. Mbappe said the PSG he is set to leave behind is in "great hands". "Despite everything that can happen on the outside, there are some real club lovers who want to protect it and make it shine and it’s great," he added. "I won’t be a player any more but I will watch every game. I tried to give the best version of myself during those seven years." Coming next week: Watch a special Mbappe documentary on iPlayer. My partner, Paul, and I are dog lovers through and through but our office jobs meant it had never been practical, or fair, to have a dog of our own. In lockdown our working situations changed, however, so we visited Oxford Animal Sanctuary and met Buddy, a labrador/border collie cross. He was nine and very reactive to other dogs. Knowing he had spent three years in and out of kennels, we couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him in what must have been an incredibly stressful environment. So on 4 July 2020 we brought him home. With us, Buddy was docile, gentle and obedient. He never barked or charged around; he was the perfect house dog. A real character, he loved waking us up by grabbing the corner of the duvet in his mouth and ripping it off. He adored playing football and always tried to join in when I attempted Yoga With Adriene or a Joe Wicks workout. But the sanctuary had warned that if he saw another dog he would become agitated and aggressive and want to charge at them. So every time we took him for a walk, Paul would have to go ahead and make sure the coast was clear. In 2022 we moved to a house with a much bigger garden, so we stopped taking Buddy for walks and he enjoyed playing there instead. It saddened me to think of all the experiences he was missing out on, but he couldn’t have been more loved. Then, in August last year, he developed a severe limp in his front left leg and the vet diagnosed arthritis and muscle wastage. He was prescribed painkillers but within a month he was in pain again. We were back and forth to the vets but by this February he was constantly in pain and every day was a struggle. We knew it wasn’t fair on him, so we made the heartbreaking decision to have him put to sleep. That’s when Paul had the idea of arranging for him to visit a pet store, where he could experience a new place filled with delicious smells, sniffs and treats. We just had to make sure there wouldn’t be any other dogs there. We contacted Pets at Home in Bicester, and they gave us a time when there was unlikely to be anyone else around, and agreed to stand guard. Paul and I were in bits on 15 February as Buddy limped through the shop doors to be greeted by a sign written in treats that said: “Hello, Buddy!” He was so excited that he almost lost his limp as he sniffed his way around, wolfing down the trail of goodies the staff had left. After about half an hour we thanked them and left but Buddy didn’t want to get in the car. We said our final goodbye the following morning. Buddy brought us so much joy that we are glad we could give him a final treat. We call it his Make a Wish event, as we know it would have been all of his wishes come true. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/25/the-pet-ill-never-forget-buddy-the-rescue-dog-whose-final-walk-brought-him-so-much-joy

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty’s rise to fame was no easy feat, despite his eventual recognition as one of the most prominent actors of his time. Gaining recognition in his debut film Mrigyaa, Chakraborty, during an appearance on Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, in 2023, reflected on the challenges he faced during the late 70s and 80s when climbing the ladder of success in Bollywood. The star disclosed that numerous female actors declined to work with him due to the influence of their male co-stars as they considered him a ‘chota star’ and ‘B-grade actor’. However, he credits the legendary Zeenat Aman for taking a chance on him, ultimately leading him to superstardom.“Kitni ladaai ek insaan lad sakta hai (How many battles can a person fight)? Koi bhi badi heroine mere sath kaam karne ko taiyaar nahin thi (no big actress was ready to work with me). They thought I was a ‘chota star’. ‘Yeh kabhi kya hero banega? (He can never become a hero). Who will make him a hero?’ Kya kya bolte they mere baare mein (They said a lot of unsavoury things about me). I don’t even want to say it. Phir dard hota hai (It only hurts me),” he recalled.Chakraborty’s journey to the top was marred by the initial reluctance of A-list actresses to collaborate with him. Opening up about his struggles as a ‘B-grade’ actor, the Disco Dancer star rued, “There was a time when I thought I wouldn’t transition from B-grade films to A-grade films. There were times when the actresses walked out even after the film was announced. There was pressure and other actors were insecure that I would make it big someday. So they may have warned those heroines, ‘Iske saath kaam karogi toh hamare saath kaam nahin kar sakti‘ (If you worked with Mithun, we don’t work with you in films).” https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/only-zeenat-aman-agreed-mithun-chakraborty-says-heroines-refused-to-work-with-him-said-b-grade-actor-9319782/

GM Energy demonstrated its EV-as-home-power-supply tech by cutting the electricity at a Beverly Hills mansion outfitted with its new bidirectional charging equipment. The lights went out momentarily while the home switched from grid power to juice supplied by a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST First Edition in the garage. The system is available now and will be joined by a GM Energy battery backup module later this year. With the exception of some reclusive cabin dwellers, it's not often that a homeowner happily cuts their domicile off from the electrical grid. And while that's not likely to be a regular occurrence, GM Energy did just that to show how one of its EVs can power a home in the event of an outage, real or otherwise. The General Motors subsidiary is now marketing a V2H (vehicle-to-home) bidirectional charging system. Similar to the one Ford offers for the F-150 Lightning electric pickup, GM Energy’s solution can automatically switch a house from grid power to EV-supplied juice—provided the EV is at home and plugged in, of course. The system works with the RST model of the Chevy Silverado EV now, and support is forthcoming for 2024 models of Chevrolet's Equinox and Blazer EVs, the GMC Sierra EV Denali, and the Cadillac Lyriq. We noticed that the first UItium-based EVs, the GMC Hummer SUV and Hummer pickup, are absent from this list. The chief engineer for the GM Energy system tells us these models could gain support at a later date through a software update, but none is promised as of yet. The system starts with the GM Energy PowerShift Charger. GM EV owners can buy this as a stand-alone unit for normal Level 2 home-to-vehicle charging; enabling V2H requires the aptly named V2H Enablement Kit, which consists of a power inverter, a home hub, and a dark start battery. (More fun with branding: If you're wondering what happened to the Ultium label these charging stations were supposed to wear, we were too. GM reps tell us the Ultium name is being reserved for the EV architecture technology, while GM Energy will be the name on its home and commercial power products.) Where Can Equipment Go? Just about Anywhere Why aren't those items packaged as one unit? We're told this is to allow for flexibility in locating each component. Because every home's layout and wiring is different, this allows the owner and installer to situate the system's parts where they make the most sense. They're all weatherproof and can be located indoors or out, and in many cases can be hidden in a utility room or somewhere they won't normally be seen. How It Works In normal circumstances when grid power is flowing, the dark start battery is trickle charging to keep itself topped up. Once the power goes out, it kicks into action, providing low-voltage power to the rest of the system, allowing them to communicate with one another and tell the EV to start shifting its power to the home. The PowerShift charging unit essentially runs in reverse, supplying power to the inverter, which then feeds the home hub with AC that it distributes to the home's circuits. When the system is installed—GM has partnered with Qmerit to handle that job—you can decide whether the whole house gets backup power or only certain circuits. The equipment can supply up to 9.6 kW of power, which is plenty to keep the essentials running in most homes—even a 10,000-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion, apparently. The changeover takes a matter of seconds from the lights going out to them coming back on again. In between, LEDs on the various components come alive thanks to the dark state battery, the clicking of relays can be heard as the hub locks out the connection to the grid and routes the supply from the EV to the home's circuits, and then you're back in business. The only hint that the home is on EV power is the near-imperceptible sound of the various components, which GM says emit less than 50 dB of noise, equivalent to the volume of a whisper. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60755806/gm-energy-ev-charging-for-home/

The US government says Israel may have breached humanitarian law in Gaza using American weapons. In a long-awaited report, the state department says it is "reasonable to assess" that US-supplied arms were used in ways "inconsistent" with Israel's obligations. But it says Israel has had to confront an "extraordinary military challenge" fighting Hamas in Gaza. The report, ordered by the White House, was submitted to Congress on Friday. The document says that the US government doesn't have "complete information" to verify its assessment. However it said that given Israel's significant reliance on US-made weapons "it is reasonable to assess" that they had been used since October 7 "in instances inconsistent with its IHL obligations or with established best practices for mitigating civilian harm". It also finds that, despite Israel not fully co-operating with US efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza in the initial months after the conflict began, it does not currently assess that Israel is prohibiting or restricting the transport of aid supplies. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68984999

You will not run out of options if you go browsing the web for wireless power banks. However, many of us are waiting for the Qi2 chargers to show up, which will bring additional features like magnetic locking and faster charging speeds. And while those have yet to arrive as power banks in India, many who require the wire-free convenience of on-the-go charging will have to go with the standard Qi chargers (and their limitations). I recently received a wireless charger made by Urbn for review. What makes it interesting is its small form factor, which is barely visible even behind a standard-sized iPhone model. However, after a few weeks of use, I discovered a number of limitations that make it hard to recommend this model when compared to other offerings available in India. Urbn 5,000mAh Compact MagTag Wireless Power Bank Review: Design and specifications The Urbn 5,000 mAh Compact MagTag Wireless Power Bank, henceforth referred to as the Urbn MagTag charger, comes with some interesting features. Key among them is its small and well-rounded pebble-like design, which has a really tiny footprint measuring just 9cm x 6.3cm, with a thickness of 1.6cm. It's also very light at just 121 grams. While its outer shell is made of plastic, its outer surface is coated with a rubber-like texture, which offers a good grip and feels solid with no unwanted gaps. However, I noticed that the area on the charging pad is a proper dust magnet and gets quite messy after some usage. The power bank has just one button on its back which is flanked by two LED indicators to display the amount of charging power left in the batteries. Unlike most other wireless power banks that I have used, the charging process does not activate upon placing a smartphone on the charging pad but only upon pressing the button. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/reviews/urbn-5000mah-compact-magtag-wireless-power-bank-review-5580368#pfrom=indepth
