For a smartphone company that has been focused on the budget and mid-range segment since its inception, it was a big surprise when Tecno went all-in and unveiled its first folding smartphone during MWC 2023. Dubbed the Phantom V Fold 5G, this horizontal folding smartphone is a direct competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series, and will be made entirely in India. This could be one of the reasons for its highly aggressive price of Rs. 88,888, which is around where we usually find vertically folding or flip smartphones. Tecno recently launched this phone in India, and we got to spend some time with it. Here's what we think. It is only natural to draw comparisons with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, and looking at its specs, the new Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G is pretty well-equipped. From its flagship-grade 4nm SoC and up to 512GB of storage, to its massive 7.85-inch LTPO AMOLED display, it checks all the important boxes. The phone itself is bulky, just like any other folding phone of this type, and is meant to be used with two hands. It is on the heavier side too. When folded, there's virtually no visible gap between the two halves, which I quite like. At its thickest point (near the hinge), the Phantom V Fold 5G is still slimmer than the competition at 14.5mm. The Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G has an aluminium frame. The company has developed a proprietary hinge which it says minimises the crease. This can still be felt if you run your finger across the centre of the folding screen, but it's is only visible at extreme angles. The outer display also has a gentle curve on one side which is an interesting design choice. The ports and buttons are where you'd expect them to be, and the power button also houses the fingerprint sensor. In my brief time with this phone, its build quality seemed to be decent, although I did notice a bit of play in the hinge when the phone was folded. The back panel of the Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G's black variant is made from recycled plastic waste, while the white variant uses an “organic silicon leather” material. There's a distinctive camera module on the back which includes a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera capable of 2X optical zoom. The selfie camera on the outer screen is a 32-megapixel sensor, while the folding screen gets a 16-megapixel sensor in a hole-punch cutout. The camera app has a lot of extra features to take advantage of the folding screen and we'll explore all of them in the full review. The Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G runs HiOS 13 Fold, which is based on Android 13. Tecno says that over 1,000 apps have been optimised to take advantage of the folding display and should work in split-screen and multi-window modes. While the display can stay unfolded at about 90 degrees, I found that it doesn't hold its position very well if you try to leave it open it at other angles. I'm curious to see how this will affect day to day use and productivity. The Phantom V Fold lacks wireless charging, but makes up for that with a large 5,000mAh battery and 45W wired charging. According to Tecno, the Phantom V Fold 5G should be able to charge completely in under an hour. Its outer display is a 6.42-inch full-HD+ AMOLED panel, while the inside gets a 7.85-inch AMOLED display with a 2K resolution. The Phantom V Fold 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ SoC. The Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G is the most affordable folding phone of its kind in India at the moment, and that by itself should pique the interest of many who are looking to get their first foldable. The advantages of a horizontal folding phone versus a vertical one are undeniable, and worth considering now that you can get either type for roughly the same price. However, this is Tecno's first stab at the premium smartphone market in India and it'll be interesting to see how buyers respond to the Phantom V Fold 5G. What was once a feature of dedicated tablets and 2-in-1 convertibles has slowly encroached into the traditional laptop space. We’re talking about touch screens, of course, and many manufacturers include them on their devices as a value-add to help differentiate their products in an increasingly crowded market. However, while touch screen technology makes sense in tablets and convertibles, laptop users might not see the benefits in reaching their arms across the keyboard to tap on the screen when the integrated touchpad or an external mouse can do the job just fine. So while you can simply not bother touching the screen if you don’t want to use your fingers and get the screen all smudgy, you can also disable this functionality. For those folks, Microsoft makes it relatively easy to disable the touch screen in Windows 10 or Windows 11. 1. Type Device Manager in the Windows 11 search box in the taskbar and click on the app. Alternatively, you can right-click on the Start button and click “Device Manager” from the application list in Windows 10 or Windows 11. 2. Once in Device Manager, scroll down to Human Interface Devices and expand the listing. You should see entries for things like your laptop’s trackpad and an entry that says HID-compliant touch screen. 3. Right-click on the HID-compliant touch screen and click Disable device. 4. Click Yes when prompted. And that’s it; your touch screen should now be disabled. To verify the changes, attempt to touch the screen with your finger to see if it responds. If you can’t make inputs on the screen, then your quick jaunt through the Device Manager was successful. If you want to re-enable the touch screen on your laptop in the future, you can just go through the above steps again and click “Enable device” during step three.

Apple is trying something new with the latest beta version of tvOS 16.5: the option to watch up to four simultaneous streams at once. Right now it's limited to live sports streamed through the Apple TV app, specifically MLB Friday Night Baseball and the MLS Season Pass. A multi-view option was spotted in the tvOS software last month, but the code was hidden and not enabled. MacRumors(opens in new tab) reported that the feature would be enabled this weekend, and beta testers have since been able to use it. As yet multi-view hasn't been officially announced by Apple, but it's expected that tvOS 16.5 is going to be pushed out in its final form within the next month or so. WWDC 2023 is around the corner as well, when we should be hearing about the next major updates for Apple's various operating systems – including tvOS 17. How it works Over at 9to5Mac(opens in new tab) there's a hands-on demonstrating how the multi-view feature works, and it's pretty much as you would expect. It becomes available when multiple live games are available through a sports service inside the TV app. When that's the case and you're watching one live game, a grid icon appears above the playback scrubber when you bring up the controls toolbar. Select this grid icon, and you're able to select a second, third, and fourth game to watch. You can only hear audio from one stream at a time, and the Siri remote is used to switch between the audio tracks. A variety of layout options are available: you can keep one stream in a larger window than the others, or have all the windows the same size. Analysis: Apple could be betting big on sports The prevailing thinking is that all of our attention spans are shrinking year on year, but you wouldn't really want to watch four movies simultaneously, or four episodes of the same television show. Where this really makes sense is with sports streams. Of course you can't exactly partition up your brain to concentrate on four games at once, but a feature like this means you're able to keep checking up on what's happening in multiple locations – very handy if you want to know how rival teams are getting on. This is really restricted for now: not only do you need beta software, there's only the baseball and the soccer in the US that you can watch. However, it might be a sign that Apple is planning to invest more heavily in sports programming in the future. There have been rumors that Apple is looking to secure rights to show Premier League soccer from the UK – although it's worth bearing in mind that those rights might not include the option to broadcast multiple games simultaneously.

Apple is expected to launch the iOS 17 update soon. Many leaks and reports previously have suggested that the Cupertino-based tech giant may announce the new operating system at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023, which will be hosted from June 5 to June 9. Apple's iOS 16 update was announced at last year's WWDC. The company, which recently rolled out the iOS 16.4 update, has been long reported to be working on the upcoming, newer and improved OS. A tipster now suggests some of the features that could be part of the iOS 17 update. According to a tweet thread by Twitter user941 (@analyst941), who is known to have a good track record with leaks, iOS 17 will be supported on all iPhone models supporting iOS 16 including Apple A11 Bionic chipset-powered handsets like the iPhone 8, and iPhone X, corroborating a previous report. The tipster adds that iOS 17 will come with improved performance, efficiency, stability and long-term support for older devices, like standard iPad, iPhone 8, and the iPhone X series even though the first few beta cycles may seem rough for 3GB RAM handsets. Camera app changes reportedly initially planned for the iPhone 14 Pro series, are likely to be only implemented on to the iPhone 15 lineup, instead of all iOS 17 compatible handsets, as per the tipster. Apple Continuously Expanding Business Operations in India: Piyush Goyal Control Center could witness major changes in terms of user interface and customisations with the iOS 17 update, the tipster suggests, and also adds that there will be improvements on the existing Dynamic Island feature, which according to the tipster is a push from Apple's marketing department towards the development team, presumably aimed at increasing sales of the standard iPhone 15 models. The iOS 17 update, as suggested by the tipster, will likely feature an improved always-on display, Focus Mode filters, Notification changes, and additional options in the Settings app including a Custom Accessibility setting that would enable total control over the UI and layout for older persons or younger children to users. Suggested in the leak is also the information that Apple may be testing active, dynamic widgets, but it is not confirmed. Active widgets may include one-tap buttons, sliders and more, according to the tipster. He adds that iOS 17 will bring more Car implementations into the Wallet app and launch with CarKey improvements. Microsoft SwiftKey for Android and iOS Gets Bing Chat Integration The Health app will also likely see UI changes with the new OS, especially with regard to the ‘Favorites' feature in Health. The Search/Spotlight feature on iOS 17 devices will also be significantly improved with the update, the tipster suggests. It is also expected to come with “an absolute behemoth of ARKit API's/frameworks,” the leak reads, adding that there will be “a metric ton of them.” Contrary to recent reports, the leak adds that the iPhone 15 Pro models, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, are still expected to feature capacitive/haptic volume, ‘action', and power buttons.

To get good output from ChatGPT or another LLM, you usually have to feed it several prompts. But what if you could just give your AI bot a set of fairly broad goals at the start of a session and then sit back while it generates its own set of tasks to fulfill those goals? That’s the idea behind Auto-GPT, a new open-source tool that uses the OpenAI API (same LLM as ChatGPT) to prompt itself, based on your initial input. We’ve already seen a number of Twitter users talk about how they are using Auto-GPT for everything from creating marketing plans to analyzing market data for investments to preparing topics for a podcast. Based on our hands-on experience, we can’t say that it always works well (we asked it to write a Windows 11 how-to and the result was awful), but it’s early days and some tasks may work better than others. If you want to try Auto-GPT on your computer, it is easy to install, and while there are a few sticky points in the process, we’ve found ways to work with them, or around them to write this condensed guide on how to create your own Auto-GPT AI to help you in your goals. For This Project You WIll Need A Windows 10 or 11 PC An OpenAI API Account. You can get a few dollars of credit for free, but then will have to pay for additional tokens. Creating an Auto-GPT AI Agent 1. Download and install git. When prompted to select a text editor, select the most appropriate editor. I chose to use Notepad++. Windows 11 has witnessed the debut of a much-anticipated feature for File Explorer, namely an integrated photo gallery. Build 23435 for the Dev channel introduces this new piece of functionality, which represents a large piece in a bigger puzzle Microsoft is busy solving – that of how to make File Explorer better with a full revamp. File Explorer is the very folders you open on the desktop, no doubt on a daily basis, so it’s very much a core part of the Windows 11 interface. And in this case, the addition of a Gallery gives you an easy way to browse through your photos, right there when using File Explorer. Clicking on ‘Gallery’ presents a chronological photo gallery, with the most recent images at the top, and a timeline to the right, allowing for swift scrolling back into the past if required. As Microsoft points out in the blog post(opens in new tab) for build 23435, the Gallery takes the same form as the ‘All Photos’ view in the Photos app. It’s possible to decide which images get included in the new Gallery via a dropdown menu that lets you add folders. Also, Gallery will show up in the ‘file picker dialog’, which is the panel that pops up to choose a file, for example, when you’re attaching something to an email (so if that something is a pic, you can browse via the Gallery). Analysis: gauging the reaction to Gallery This is a major addition to File Explorer, but not one that’s a surprise. Mainly because we’ve seen the File Explorer photo gallery already, thanks to intrepid Windows 11 testers who’ve dug under the hood of the OS. In short, Gallery has been present in preview builds for some time, and has previously been enabled using configuration tools, so we’ve already had a couple of decent peeks at the new Windows 11 feature. Still, it’s great to see Gallery up and rocking in its full form, finally, and to discover more about the nuances of how it works. Albeit there’s a caveat here – not all Windows 11 testers will see this right now, as Microsoft is taking it slowly with the Gallery rollout. The software giant notes that it will monitor feedback on the feature to “see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone”, and that currently, we’re at the start of the rollout. So, reading between the lines, you might have to get rather lucky to see the photo gallery in File Explorer with build 23435, but we’d imagine it’ll be coming to a good deal more testers pretty soon. Speaking of expected timelines, when might Microsoft’s big overhaul of File Explorer, complete with Gallery, actually arrive in the release version of Windows 11? That’s still a good way off, and we’re likely looking at the big annual update for Windows 11 later in 2023 (known as 23H2).

Asus is now the only company still selling bulky, powerful, dedicated gaming phones in India. The ROG Phone 7 series arrives right on time, with the latest flagship Qualcomm SoC, showing that the Taiwanese giant is still committed to making improvements even as its competitors have fallen back. However, is a gaming phone still relevant in 2023, and would you be happier with a more mainstream phone that's a little less powerful but a lot more affordable and easier to carry? If you're familiar with any of the previous Asus ROG Phone models, you'll see that the company has kept to its formula in terms of design and features. There's nothing completely new or disruptive here. Two versions have been launched – the standard ROG Phone 7, and the ROG 7 Ultimate which has more RAM and storage, a small PMOLED display on the back and a vent that can physically open for better cooling (more on this later). The Ultimate unit comes in a more elaborate box, and the AeroActive Cooler 7 is included. It's also available only in a silvery-white matte glass finish, while the standard ROG Phone 7 comes in Storm White and Phantom Black. While the base Asus ROG Phone 7 model is priced at Rs. 74,999 in India, the Ultimate version costs a whopping Rs. 99,999. The AeroActive Cooler 7 on its own will cost Rs. 6,999. Buyers can register their interest starting today, though units will only go on sale on an unspecified date in May 2023. Both versions have the same core specifications and dimensions. At 239g, the ROG Phone 7 is bulky, but surprisingly a hair lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max and just 5g heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, so it's in the same ballpark as other flagship phones. The 10.4mm thickness is also within reason. However, you might not find either of these variants as comfortable in day-to-day-use. Having spent time with multiple previous ROG Phone models, I can tell you that they aren't very convenient to carry around in a pocket and even just reading or typing for an extended period can get fatiguing. The borders around the screen are quite thick by today's mainstream standards but this means that there's no notch or hole for the front camera, and you get dual front-firing speakers for balanced stereo sound. Just like last year's versions, the ROG Phone 7 series all have 6.78-inch screens with a 1080x2448-pixel resolution, 165Hz maximum refresh rate and 720Hz maximum touch sampling rate. What's new is a 1500nit peak brightness and auto HDR conversion. As expected, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with its integrated Adreno 740 GPU is the SoC that powers the ROG Phone 7 series, and if you're paying this much for a gaming phone you'd expect the latest and greatest. The standard ROG Phone 7 has 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, while the Ultimate version has 16GB and 512GB respectively. There are two 3000mAh battery units, which Asus says makes for quicker charging and improved heat dissipation. 65W USB-PD fast charging is supported, though for some reason you only get a 30W charger in the box. There's no wireless charging. For connectivity, Wi-Fi 7 is supported. There's Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and Gorilla Glass 3 on the back. Both ROG Phone 7 models have the same IP54 rating but that doesn't apply for the Ultimate when the cooling vent on the back is open. That vent is meant to allow the AeroActive Cooler 7, a rather large clip-on fan attachment, to interface physically with the phone's cooling system to conduct heat out of its body. Using it is said to drop the rear panel temperature by up to 25 percent, that too quite rapidly. The attachment also has a bunch of RGB LEDs, a small subwoofer, and four physical trigger buttons. So what sets the ROG Phone 7 apart from other devices with the same high-end hardware? For one, it's the gamer-centric design, which prioritises things like front-firing speakers and highly effective cooling over reducing weight. You also get dedicated “AirTrigger” sensors on the frame which line up with your forefingers, to act as physical controls in games. Like with its predecessors, there's a second USB Type-C port on one side so you can charge your phone while gaming. Moreover, there are plenty of software tweaks, letting you do things like program the AirTriggers and create macros, apply game-specific UI themes, choose a performance preset, and fine-tune graphics and other hardware parameters. An overlay can show you performance stats as well as estimated battery life. The ROG Phone 7 series introduces vibration mapping and automatic clip recording when certain input sequences are detected. On the downside, Asus can't promise that the ROG Phone 7's cameras will match those of today's more common premium Android phones at this price. The main camera is based on a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor, and you get only basic 13-megapixel ultra-wide and 8-megapixel macro cameras. There's a 32-megapixel front camera. The ROG Phone 7 models really aren't for everyone. They only make sense for those who value gaming performance above all else. If you're extremely competitive, like being able to play games comfortably for long hours, and if you will use the triggers and software tweaks, you are Asus' target audience. At these prices, you could buy a very capable and slick modern flagship Android device or even an iPhone. However, if you're the type to spend a few lakhs on a good gaming laptop and upgrade your desktop PC every few years, the ROG Phone 7's price won't feel like such a stretch. AMD is firing back at Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4070 launch today, with some serious discounts on its mid-range and top-end RX 6000 series graphics cards. RX 6000 series GPUs, which compete favorably with the RTX 4070 in terms of performance have been discounted up to $110 below MSRP. These new price discounts come hot off the heels after AMD's attack on Nvidia's stingy VRAM, which was released shortly before RTX 4070 reviews went live yesterday. Now, AMD has added additional discounts on top of its RX 6800 series graphics cards to compete with the RTX 4070. AMD's discounts represent some serious competition for Nvidia's RTX 4070. Both the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT have seen $30 to $50 discounts with various AIB partner cards, to the point where the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT are now selling for $110 below MSRP. This means the RX 6800 XT can now be had for just $539(opens in new tab), and the RX 6800 for $469(opens in new tab). As the cherry on top, AMD is also still selling its previous-generation flagship RX 6950XT for just $9(opens in new tab) over the 4070's MSRP, with superior rasterized gaming performance. AMD's price cuts are strategically applied to the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT exclusively. Both GPUs sit right next to the RTX 4070 in terms of performance, offering very similar frame rates at 1440P when ray tracing is not being used based on our review of the 4070. The RX 6800 XT in particular, sits closest to the RTX 4070 offering nearly identical frame rates. The RX 6800 is a bit slower, but not by that much, a hefty overclock could bring its performance in line with a 4070. In terms of value, the RX 6800 XT at $539 will offer you RTX 4070 performance at 90% of the price. The RX 6800 will offer you 90% of the RTX 4070's performance but at 72.2% of the price - or a 28% discount. At these price points, AMD's previous-generation RX 6800 series cards may be an excellent alternative to the RTX 4070 for gamers who don't care about having bleeding-edge hardware.

The next generation of AMD’s CPUs with Zen 5 architecture aren't expected until 2024, but a new benchmark leak suggests they'll be well worth waiting for. According to a report from Moore's Law is Dead(opens in new tab) (and reported on by Kitguru(opens in new tab)), an engineering sample of a dual AMD Zen 5 CPU system has managed an impressive score of 123,000 on the po[CENSORED]r Cinebench R23 multi-threaded benchmark. To compare, a dual AMD Zen 4 setup scored 108K on the same test, which is a 12% difference between the two. The sample was shown clocked up to 3.85 GHz (no confirmation whether that’s maxed out or the average), and the CPU apparently has 128 cores and 256 threads, with eight CCDs and each having eight cores. A screenshot shown in the report indicates that the Zen 5 chip would have 10MB of L1 cache, or 80KB per core. It was also mentioned that a variant of the CPU called Turin-Dense would have 16 cores per chiplet. We don't know for sure that the screenshots are accurate, but if they are there's good reason to be excited about the CPU's performance potential - especially given that this supposedly dual Zen 5 setup is only an engineering sample. In short, we could be looking at some significant gains in future AMD CPUs that use Zen 5 architecture. Zen 5 could make for some serious competition for Team Blue Given that Zen 5 isn’t due until at least 2024, based on AMD confirmation in 2022, we only know so much about the chip and its architecture. We do know that it’ll include AI-related optimizations, which would be a huge potential benefit for the rumored AI-enhanced FSR 3.0 frame-rate booster. While FSR is a GPU technology, rather than a CPU-driven one, Zen 5’s AI optimizations should definitely partner with AMD GPUs to improve the quality of FSR 3.0 substantially. This would put it right on the path of Nvidia DLSS - and considering that tech makes 8K gaming much more than a pipe dream, that's something Team Red needs to consider to stay competitive. The next question is, what would Zen 5 be competing against once it does make its debut? Depending on when in 2024 the Zen 5 chips will launch, AMD could be seeing competition from two different Intel chip generations. An earlier release would pit it against Intel’s Meteor Lake, which is set to release in late 2023 and which will be introducing 7nm process technology. This would be the ideal release window, as competition would be tight and AMD would have a strong chance of coming out on top in terms of performance. However, if Zen 5 makes its debut in late 2024, then according to what we know from Intel’s existing roadmap, it’ll be going against Intel’s 15th-gen Arrow Lake processors. Considering that Arrow Lake is expected to bring about a massive leap in integrated graphics performance, that could leave Team Red lagging behind. Of course, all of this is mere conjecture at this point, but you can be sure that when we get official word on the new CPU we'll report it here. Chinese manufacturer BYD has confirmed that it will bring a new small electric car to the UK this year. At 4290mm long, the new BYD Dolphin sits in between the Peugeot e-208 and Volkswagen ID 3 in size. Based on the same E-Platform 3.0 as the BYD Atto 3 family hatchback with which the brand launched its UK offensive earlier this year, the electric-only Dolphin will arrive with a 60kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) ‘Blade’ battery capable of delivering an official combined WLTP range of up to 265 miles. Power will be sent to the front-wheels via a 201bhp electric motor that’s good for a 0-62mph time of 7.1sec. Rapid charging rates peak at 88kW. UK prices are yet to be confirmed, but will likely start from around £32,000. A smaller-battery version of the Dolphin will follow, and while specifics haven’t been confirmed it's probable that it will use the 44kWh pack already used in the Chinese market version of the Dolphin. The interior of the Dolphin is a more conventional-looking affair than the wildly styled interior of the Atto 3, but the Dolphin still gets some aquatic-themed details including what one company source describes as “dolphin-shaped interior door handles that will bring a joyful twist". The Dolphin will be offered in four trim levels and with a variety of different finishes. A rotating, 12.3in touchscreen interface is standard across the range, as is a heat pump. There will be a wide range of exterior finishes to choose from, including optional dual-tone paint and a panoramic glass roof, in keeping with the brand’s efforts to pitch itself as a semi-premium offering on a par with the likes of Kia and Hyundai. A comparably spacious three-person rear bench and a 345-litre boot also make the BYD Dolphin an interesting small family car option, straddling the traditional B- and C-segment hatchback classes. Banknote maker De La Rue has said that demand for banknotes around the world is at its lowest level in 20 years. The company, which designs a third of banknotes globally, said demand for cash had fallen since the pandemic when central banks stocked up on currency. It said the downturn would hit its full-year profits, which are set to fall short of expectations. The firm is having to renegotiate its loan agreements with its banks due to the tougher trading conditions. "The demand for banknotes has been at the lowest levels for over 20 years, resulting in a low order book going into fiscal year 2024," De La Rue said in a trading update. Its boss, Clive Vacher, told the BBC that central banks had stepped up orders for bank notes during Covid as they always did in economic crises. But they were now delaying new orders as they ran through their stock. De La Rue said there are signs of recovery but is not sure when that will happen. The 200 year-old firm said it was in talks with its banks over its loan agreements because of lower profits and higher interest rates, following a succession of rises by the Bank of England. De La Rue now expects its full-year profit to be in the "low £20m range" while the interest costs on its loans has risen. It said it is "in discussions with its lending banks in relation to seeking an amendment to its banking covenants, reflecting the revised outlook and also reflecting the increase in the company's funding costs resulting from higher Bank of England base rates". De La Rue employs 1,800 people globally and works with 140 countries. All current Bank of England banknotes are printed by the firm at a site in Debden, Essex. Rabat - OCP Group, the world’s largest phosphate-based fertilizer producer announced today a partnership with the International Financial Cooperation (IFC) to build four solar plants to power OCP's Moroccan operations, reduce the company’s carbon footprint and make fertilizer production greener. The two entities announced the partnership during this week’s “Spring Meetings” of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington DC. Under the agreement, the IFC will provide a landmark green loan of €100 million to build solar plants in the mining towns of Benguerir and Khouribga, according to a statement from OCP. The two cities are home to some of Morocco’s vast phosphate reserves. A “green loan” is a form of financing intended for environmental projects where benefits are assessed and measured against agreed-upon targets. The four solar plants will have a combined peak capacity of 202-megawatt (MWp) and will supply green energy to power OCP’s operations. The project is set to be implemented by OCP Group Energy, an OCP Group subsidiary established in 2022 to oversee the group’s green transition. The project is part of OCP's ambitious green investment program. This year, the fertilizer manufacturer unveiled its $13 billion Green Investment Program, which aims to increase green fertilizer production and transition the company’s operational energy use to green energy by 2030. The plan aims to replace OCP’s electricity consumption with green energy, averting about 285,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) of annual emissions. Commenting on the partnership, OCP Group Chairman and CEO Mostafa Terrab described the deal as “ground-breaking,” adding that it underlines the company’s commitment to the global agricultural transition. “Investing in reliable and competitive renewable energy is a key pillar of OCP's investment plan towards our ambitious targets for sustainable green fertilizers,” he explained. Terrab further added that securing this loan is “testimony to the partnership we are building with IFC and the alignment of our institutions addressing the global challenges of food security and climate change simultaneously.” On his part, IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop said that the IFC is “proud to support OCP's efforts to reduce emissions and green fertilizer production in Africa.” Noting the relevance of the deal, Diop explained that “Climate change and food security are deeply intertwined. With this investment, we are helping build a food system for Africa and the world that is both more sustainable and more secure.” The plants are expected to provide a cost-efficient source of energy while boosting OCP’s competitiveness by increasing the production of low-carbon fertilizers. The project will bring the Moroccan company closer to reaching its target of sourcing 100% of its electricity needs from wind, solar, and cogeneration. The project will also support the resilience of Morocco's electricity-generating sector. The project is part of IFC's mandate to help developing countries access capital to implement climate-friendly projects, decarbonize economies, and address the rising threat of climate change. In a statement, the IFC stressed that it is “committed to growing its climate-related investments to an annual average of 35 percent of its own-account long-term commitment volume between 2021 and 2025.” IFC further added that it is working with financial institutions to finance projects that support climate change mitigation and adaptation The partnership with OCP “aligns with IFC's Global Food Security Platform, a $6 billion financing facility launched in 2022 to strengthen the private sector's ability to respond to the food crisis and help support the sustainable production of food.” The project will draw on the expertise of INNOV'X, an innovation engine affiliated with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), an institution dedicated to building innovative and sustainable businesses and ecosystems with strong local impact. This is not the first time OCP Group partners with the IFC. In 2021, the IFC provided OCP with a $100 million loan to finance its subsidiary, OCP Africa, to make fertilizers more available, and provide training on practices relating to local soils and crops in Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and Tanzania.
