  2. Secretary of Army nominee Vincent Viola sold the property to the actor for $23 million Serial real estate investor Leonardo DiCaprio has paid one of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks $23 million for a nearly barren 1.8-acre Malibu beachfront lot, property records show. The land on Pacific Coast Highway is located in an exclusive neighborhood of celebrity-owned mansions, wedged directly between "Friends" star Courteney Cox and TV producer Mark Burnett, according to property records. But unlike their impressive beachfront homes, "The Revenant" star’s new digs consist of a one-bedroom, cliff-side bungalow the size of a modest Manhattan apartment. From the highway, a thick of trees and overgrown brush cover the property, guardedby abasicchain-link fence. But beyond the fence, along an unkempt gravel road, is what looks like an impressive and unobscured cliffside vista. As stars do, Mr. DiCaprio, 42, bought the property under an obscure limited liability company called Jinpar 1031 at the end of November, according to the deed, which lists the mailing address of Mr. DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way. The seller was none other than Mr. Trump’s pick for Army secretary, Vincent Viola, a billionaire investor, who bought the home back in 2006 from English film director Sir Ridley Scott for $11 million, according to property records. Mr. Viola’s son, Michael Viola, signed the home over Mr. DiCaprio'sLLC, according to the deed. Mr. Viola is no stranger to the real estate spotlight. He and his wife, Teresa, made headlines in in 2013 when they listed their restored 19th Century Upper East Side townhouse for $114 million. Before this off-market deal came along, Mr. Viola briefly tried to sell the Malibu property in the summer of 2012 for $15 million, but then pulled it off the market, listing records show.At the time, the listing marketed the mostly undeveloped plot as an "opportunity to create your own private sanctuary on the bluffs overlooking Paradise Cove." It’s unlikely Mr. DiCaprio is joining the tiny house movement. Ahead of the sale, a property manager for Mr. Viola got approval from the city to raze the guest house and build a new, two-story residence with a swimming pool, cliffside deck, onsite wastewater treatment and a private beach, according to Malibu records. Mr. DiCaprio’s purchase comes amida flurry of sales and listings by the actor. Last year, he sold his Studio City house for $2.237 million and his condo in Greenwich Village for $8 million. The "Titanic" star is still trying to sell a different Malibu pad for $10.95 million, about seven times what he paid for it. A publicist for Mr. DiCaprio did not immediately return a request for comment.
  3. The next-generation Fiesta is going to hit the 2019 market in two versions when it comes to body style – as a two-door and a four-door hatchback. But, it has not been clear yet which one will be available in the USA market. Generally, the car will share the same platform with its predecessor, so the chassis will not undergo any drastic changes. However, it will appear larger in dimensions, especially wider. You can expect a wider front and the rear part of this vehicle as well as wider wheelbase. The new Fiesta will probably stand on 17-inch aluminum wheels. As far as we have been informed, probably four trims will be available in Europe. The Titanium trim will most likely be offered in the American market, too, but the other options have still been a mystery. Although the new Fiesta will largely resemble the current model, you will still notice some improvements. In the front fascia, we have spotted a recognizable oval grille that many would compare to the one seen on the latest 2019 Fusion. In the back part, you can expect flatter and more modern taillights and a roof spoiler. We hope that we will get more information about the exterior of the new Fiesta soon. INTERIOR The interior of the 2019 Ford Fiesta will definitely follow the trends of the next-generation vehicles. You will find a modern and more spacious cabin. Even the rear passengers will get more space. Also, the cabin of the new Fiesta will be quieter, so you can expect the outside noise and vibrations to be reduced. When it comes to technology, Ford will really upgrade the interior features. The driver will get an 8.0-inch touch-screen display with the latest Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system and numerous options. Also, it will include safety systems and driver assist features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, park assist, pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning and lane-keeping assist. ENGINE We can say that definitely more than one option will be offered when we talk about the engine of the 2019 Ford Fiesta. The two of them will most likely be available in the US market. One comes with a 1.0-liter Eco Boost three-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers up to 138 horsepower. It will offer the choice of a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. The other one, found in the current Fiesta, uses a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. 2019 FORD FIESTA RELEASE DATE AND PRICE The release date of the 2019 Ford Fiesta has not been confirmed yet. The estimated price range starts at $14,000 and goes up to $19,000, depending on the trim and the equipment you choose.
  4. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says it will be a "miracle" if his side finish in the Premier League top four. They are seventh and eight points off a Champions League place after Saturday's 2-2 draw at Southampton. United, whose last league win was on 3 November, host fourth-placed Arsenal on Wednesday. Before the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on 24 November, Mourinho said United could break into the top four by the end of December. But speaking to Brazilian television network RedeTV about the club's ambitions after the Saints result, the Portuguese said: "Try to win as many points as possible and try almost the miracle to end in fourth." There were reports that Mourinho criticised midfielder Paul Pogba after Saturday's draw, calling him a "virus". Former England striker Chris Sutton says Mourinho is acting like he wants to be sacked. "Mourinho does more point-scoring off the pitch than his team does on it," Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 live. "It's not a happy camp, this started in pre-season. They finished second last season, look where they are now. What's going to happen in January? Can he be trusted with a pot of money in January? This is a United team that is falling at an alarming rate. "I think he wants the sack. why would you behave in that manner? "His signings have been a disaster and he wants more money. How can they trust him with the performances the way they have been? What is good about United this season? And it all comes from the manager, who is blaming everyone else."
  5. The chief of MI6 has raised questions over Chinese technology companies being involved in the UK's communications infrastructure. Australia has already blocked Chinese company Huawei from supplying equipment for its 5G mobile network, and New Zealand has said it will consult before a final decision. MI6 boss Alex Younger said Britain needs to decide how comfortable it is "with Chinese ownership of these technologies". In a rare speech, he also said British intelligence needs to innovate faster than its adversaries to cope with threats the country faces. Russia posed a threat through hybrid warfare - including cyber attacks, he said, but warned that Moscow should not underestimate the UK's capabilities. MI6 will continue to strengthen ties in Europe, he said, and it had been involved in disrupting terrorist attacks against France and Germany. In a wide-ranging speech and discussion, Mr Younger said the UK's adversaries had been probing its institutions and defences in ways that fall short of traditional warfare. These adversaries regarded themselves as in "a state of perpetual confrontation" with the UK. Russia 'must not underestimate us' Russia's actions included the poisoning of Sergei Skripal with a nerve agent in Salisbury in March this year. The former Russian spy had come to the UK in a spy swap after being pardoned by Russia. "To the extent that we assumed that had meaning, that is not an assumption we will make again," Mr Younger said. The aim of the UK's response to that poisoning had been to make the Russian state conclude its activities were not worth the risk. The expulsion of Russian intelligence officers by the UK and allies had significantly degraded Russian intelligence capability, he said. He urged Russia "not to underestimate our determination or capabilities, or those of our allies. We can do this to any opponent at any time." He said that even though the Russian state sought to destabilise the UK, 'we do not seek to destabilise Russia.' If that country responds positively, then so would the UK. "We do not seek an escalation," he said. Since his last speech two years ago, Mr Young said MI6 and its sister agencies disrupted multiple attack plans linked to so-called Islamic State (ISIS). MI6 "will always work with our sister agencies to strengthen our indispensable security ties with Europe". UK intelligence agencies, he said, have played "an important contribution" in helping European countries, particularly France and Germany, prevent terrorist attacks in their countries or against their citizens. On the killing of Jamal Khashoggi Mr Younger said: "It was an appalling attack - shocking. "We have made it very clear to the Saudis that we expect to see a transparent effective investigation. And much will hang on the results of that investigation." The MI6 chief - known as "C" - was speaking at St Andrews University, where he studied economics and computer science as an undergraduate. It was only his second public lecture since he arrived. In the speech, Mr Younger revealed details of his own career and background that had not been publicly known before. After graduating from St Andrews he said he joined the Scots Guards Regiment and then MI6. His first job was penetrating an organisation "intent on genocide" in the Balkans in the mid-1990s. He said carrying out that mission involved travelling under a false identity and "many nights drinking obscure homemade alcohol" to create the relationships needed to provide intelligence. Certain aspects of the intelligence world had not changed and would not change, he said, with MI6 still trying to understand the motivations, intentions and aspiration of people in other countries. "Even in the era of artificial intelligence you need human intelligence," he said. But there had been significant changes. The impact of technology was a major focus of his remarks. MI6 was "pioneering a fourth generation of espionage" to make sure technology worked to its advantage. Data analytics has made the world more transparent with implications for spies. That was evident by the way that a non-governmental investigative group - Bellingcat - was able to expose the Russian military intelligence officers involved in the Salisbury attack. That was a sign that the traditional "cover" used by spies - travelling around the world under false identities - does not stand up to scrutiny in a way it did in the past. The data age posed a potentially "existential challenge" to traditional ways of operating. "Our task now is to master covert action in the data age," he said. China's role in 5G Mr Younger was asked about the role of China in building new 5G communications networks. There have been concerns that this could open the way for some kind of intercepting of communications or even sabotage. New Zealand has just announced it would not allow the Chinese company Huawei to be involved. Huawei has been involved in previous UK communications infrastructure projects. "We have got some decisions to take here," Mr Younger said. "We need to decide the extent to which we are going to be comfortable with Chinese ownership of these technologies and these platforms in an environment where some of our allies have taken a quite definite position. "We need to have a conversation. It's not wholly straightforward." Why has the UK not blocked Huawei? Cyber was now the fastest growing directorate of MI6, he said, and the service was increasingly working with the private sector tech community. Mr Younger stressed that a priority was ensuring the broadest possible range of people considered coming to work for MI6 including those who had never thought about it in the past. "If you think you can spot an MI6 officer, you are mistaken".
  6. The French government will suspend a fuel tax rise which has led to weeks of violent protests, local media report. The protests have hit major French cities causing considerable damage for the past three weekends. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe sought compromise with the protesters, but they called off talks citing death threats from extremists in their ranks. The "gilets jaunes" (yellow vests) protests have now grown to reflect more widespread anger at the government. Three people have died since the unrest began and the resulting violence and vandalism - notably when statues were smashed at the Arc de Triomphe last Saturday - have been widely condemned. "Yellow vests" are so called because they have taken to the streets wearing the high-visibility yellow clothing that is required to be carried in every vehicle by French law. The movement has grown via social media and has supporters across the political spectrum. President Emmanuel Macron was elected two years ago with an overwhelming mandate for sweeping reform, but his po[CENSORED]rity has fallen sharply in recent months. Mr Macron has accused his political opponents of hijacking the movement in order to block the reforms. Macron's difficulty By Hugh Schofield, BBC News, Paris The protesters have been waiting for the president to enact the next step in the elaborate pas-de-deux which is French social negotiation. What the ritual requires now is a gesture from the government that shows that it has not just listened, but that it is prepared to appease. That is how, since time immemorial, French social conflicts have been resolved. The difficulty for Emmanuel Macron is that this is exactly the kind of capitulation to the street that he has vowed to stop. There will be no change of direction, he repeats to all who will hear, because that would only store up worse problems for the future. What has the government been doing? Mr Macron held an urgent security meeting on Monday. Ministers said that while no options had been ruled out, imposing a state of emergency had not been discussed during the talks. He has also cancelled a planned trip to Serbia to concentrate on the crisis. Mr Philippe, meanwhile, spoke to leaders of the opposition on Monday. He is due to meet MPs from the ruling party, La Republique en Marche, later on Tuesday. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire met business representatives to assess the damage caused to businesses over the weekend. Some retailers had seen sales drop by around 20-40% during the demonstrations, while some restaurants had lost 20-50% of their takings, he added. Who are the protesters? The "gilets jaunes" movement began as a protest against a rise in duties on diesel - which is widely used by French motorists and has long been less heavily taxed than other types of fuel. Mr Macron says his motivation for the increase is environmental, but protesters call him out of touch - particularly with non-city dwellers who rely on their cars. The movement later grew to reflect a range of grievances, including the marginalisation of rural areas, high living costs, and general anger at President Macron's economic policies. The protests have no identifiable leadership and gained momentum via social media, encompassing a whole range of participants from the anarchist far left to the nationalist far right, and plenty of moderates in-between. Nearly 300,000 people took part in the first countrywide demonstration. There were more than 106,000 a week later, and 136,000 people last Saturday. Do the protests show any sign of stopping? Protests continued into Monday. About 50 "yellow vests" blocked access to a major fuel depot in the port of Fos-sur-Mer, near Marseille, and petrol stations across the country have run out of fuel. Students in about 100 secondary schools across the country held demonstrations against educational and exam reforms. Changes affecting ambulance drivers are also part of a raft of reforms by President Macron. Private ambulance drivers staged further demonstrations on Monday against a range of social security and healthcare reforms they say could affect their services. One protester told the Reuters news agency: "[The reforms] will bludgeon us financially and destroy our companies. We're going to have to fire people, that's for sure." It is unclear whether the groups of students and health workers have directly aligned themselves with the "yellow vests". One member of the movement, a man in his 20s, is in a critical condition in hospital in Toulouse. He was injured in a clash with police.

  10. Google staff have pledged $200,000 (£157,000) to engineers if they go on strike over the firm's work on a censored search engine for China. A prominent Google engineer started the fund after reports suggested it would avoid standard internal checks. The Intercept news site claimed that project Dragonfly was being developed without the oversight of privacy and security teams. Google said the project had undergone checks and would face more later. Final launch According to The Intercept, senior staff at Google involved with Dragonfly are worried about its development. It claims that Google ignored human rights worries voiced during early meetings and that standard checks on the development were being avoided. Google has not released many details about Dragonfly, but it is believed to be a censored or restricted search engine created with the co-operation of the Chinese government. China uses lots of technical measures to restrict and censor what its citizens can say and see online. In response to the article, senior Google engineer Liz Fong-Jones called for the creation of a fund to support any staff who went on strike over Dragonfly. Ms Fong-Jones said she would match funds up to a total of $100,000. Within hours, other Google staff had met her offer. The funding drive comes soon after a large group of Google workers signed a letter calling on the search giant to drop Dragonfly. In early November, thousands of staff walked out in protest at the way Google handled reports of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behaviour by senior managers. In response to The Intercept story, Google said: "This is an exploratory project and no decision has been made about whether we could or would launch." It added that privacy and security engineers had been consulted during Dragonfly's development. "For any product, final launch is contingent on a full, final privacy review but we've never gotten to that point in development," it said. "Privacy reviews at Google are non-negotiable and we never short-circuit the process." Heather Adkins, director of security and privacy at Google, also said Dragonfly had been reviewed. In a tweet, she said the story in The Intercept did not "represent my experience working on security and privacy for Dragonfly, which were positive and thoughtful. I saw no sidelining whatsoever."
  11. Arsenal laid down a marker and leapfrogged Tottenham into the Premier League's top four with an outstanding display, their finest under manager Unai Emery, to deservedly win the north London derby at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners' unbeaten run stretches to 19 games after the 4-2 win and this was their most significant of the season. So how has Emery transformed Arsenal - and how far can they go? Arsenal and Emery make biggest statement As Arsenal's season kicked into gear in the weeks after their opening home loss to Manchester City and defeat at Chelsea in August, one question remained for manager Unai Emery and his players. Yes, the winning run was very impressive - but how would Emery's bold, attacking style and fearless tactical approach fare when they faced their biggest rivals? Arsenal produced evidence to suggest they could answer that question positively with an impressive performance in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool, when Emery's side refused to take a backward step. This, however, was on another level and you could feel the renewed optimism on and off the pitch. Spurs arrived at Emirates Stadium at the end of a testing week which saw them beat Chelsea, then overcome Inter Milan in the Champions League at Wembley. Arsenal, albeit with a weakened team, were in Ukraine on Thursday but their energy, dynamism and potency was simply too much for Spurs, as Mauricio Pochettino's side suffered the rare experience of being overpowered. The Emirates is alive again after the toxic final Arsene Wenger months. The chants of "We've Got Our Arsenal Back" may be harsh on the former manager who achieved so much, but they carry meaning. Emery has blown the winds of change through Arsenal like a hurricane. It is, quite simply, like watching a different team in a different stadium. This place was accused, with justification, of being like a library in the past. This was more like a bearpit and how Emery's Arsenal revelled in it. The demanding Spaniard insists on front-foot football and is a front-foot manager, a blur of perpetual motion on the touchline and a courageous strategist, as proved by his double half-time introduction of Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey that gave Arsenal renewed impetus. Arsenal have a genuine revivalist feel about them but needed big results and a big performance to back it up. This was a win against their fiercest rivals that delivered on every level. Emery injects steel into Arsenal Arsenal's so-called soft centre was probed relentlessly under Wenger, with opponents believing they could profit from exerting their physical will on his teams. Emery's Arsenal show resilience and steel in many forms, not least in stringing together an unbeaten 12-game league run despite not leading at half-time in any of those matches. And here they picked up a physical and footballing momentum that ultimately Spurs could not cope with. It was summed up in one sequence in the closing stages when Spurs, penned in their own corner, were subdued by a succession of shuddering challenges, much to the delight of Arsenal's fans. Other statistics back up the growing belief there is a new toughness about Arsenal. Arsenal last won a north London derby in the Premier League after trailing at half-time 11 years ago, while they have scored more goals in the second half (24) than any other side in the Premier League. And it is a tribute to their determination and staying power that, if Premier League matches finished at half-time, Arsenal would be 19th in the table. How different it looks after 90 minutes. Arsenal showed greater desire than Spurs. This, as well as the result, will be a source of huge satisfaction. It all adds up to the surge of belief that swept around this stadium once Arsenal drew level and continued long after the final whistle. Can Arsenal stay in the top four? Arsenal were 12 points adrift of Liverpool in fourth place last season, the Champions League places never seriously threatened. They are in the top four now after this landmark win and they will have every right to believe they can be in the shake-up as the season goes on. When Emery arrived, behind the scenes they might have settled for that as an opening campaign but the instant impact of his workaholic style and meticulous attention to detail has already elevated expectations. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno still looks vulnerable on occasion, but elsewhere Arsenal have strength in all areas, coping comfortably here without Mesut Ozil after his latest back spasm. Rob Holding is maturing in defence, while the signing of Lucas Torreira, looking a snip at £26m, has also re-invigorated Granit Xhaka. It is the drive and positivity that impresses most and to top it off are two strikers who provide the "X Factor" that can change games. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a striker of the highest class and it was his brilliant, instinctive finish - struck instantly from the edge of the area - that restored equality after Spurs had led against the run of play at half-time. He is the first player to score with 10 consecutive shots on target since Blackburn Rovers' Benni McCarthy in October 2007 and, since his debut, only Liverpool's Mo Salah has scored as many goals in the Premier League as Aubameyang's 20. Emery is also finding ways to get his two most potent forces on the pitch together, with Lacazette playing his part with another goal, as he did to get a point against Liverpool. Big games. Big goals. There will be stern tests ahead for an Arsenal side still in transition under Emery - but his body of work so far suggests the Gunners must consider themselves top-four contenders.

  14. England have avoided Germany in Euro 2020 qualifying but Northern Ireland must face the three-time winners and the Netherlands in Group C. At 42 in the world, the Czech Republic are the next highest ranked team in England's group, which is completed by Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo. Germany dropped into pot two for the draw after suffering relegation in the Uefa Nations League, and as well as they and the Dutch, Northern Ireland will face Estonia and Belarus. The Republic of Ireland had initially been drawn in Group C but were handed a reprieve as the group already contained two of the 12 host nations for Euro 2020. They were therefore placed in Group D instead, along with Switzerland, Denmark, Georgia and Gibraltar. Fellow hosts Scotland joined Belgium, Russia, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and San Marino, while Wales will meet World Cup finalists Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan. The Euro 2020 qualifiers will take place between March and November 2019, with the winner and runner-up of each group going through directly. The qualifying process is condensed because of this year's Nations League group games, with England and Scotland guaranteed a Euro 2020 play-off place - should they fail to qualify via their regular qualifying group - after winning their Nations League section. Wembley will stage both the semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020, as well as three group games and a last-16 match. Glasgow's Hampden Park and Dublin's Aviva Stadium will each host three group games and a last-16 match. England had to be placed in a five-team group, as did Portugal, the Netherlands and Switzerland, to ensure they have free dates for the Nations League finals in June 2019. Nations League finals draw on Monday: All you need to know Group A: England, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Kosovo. Group B: Portugal, Ukraine, Serbia, Lithuania, Luxembourg. Group ? Netherlands, Germany, Northern Ireland, Estonia, Belarus. Group ? Switzerland, Denmark, Republic of Ireland, Georgia, Gibraltar. Group E: Croatia, Wales, Slovakia, Hungary, Azerbaijan. Group F: Spain, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Faroe Islands, Malta. Group G: Poland, Austria, Israel, Slovenia, Macedonia, Latvia. Group H: France, Iceland, Turkey, Albania, Moldova, Andorra. 15. The body of former US President George HW Bush is to lie in state next week ahead of a day of national mourning. An arrival ceremony will be held for Bush Snr on Monday evening at the US Capitol. The public will be invited to pay their respects. Bush served as the 41st US president between 1989 and 1993, and died late on Friday. A funeral service will be held at a later date at the National Cathedral in Washington DC. The former president had been receiving treatment for a form of Parkinson's disease and had been admitted to hospital with a blood infection in April. He died aged 94 in Houston, Texas. What are the funeral plans? The presidential plane will be flown to Houston to bring the former president's body to Washington DC. His body will lie in state in the US Capitol until 07:00 EST (12:00 GMT) on Wednesday, where the public will be able to pay tribute. He will be buried at the presidential library in Texas, alongside his wife, Barbara Bush, who died seven months ago. The Bush family said they would announce additional details about funeral arrangements "as soon as is practical". A statement from a joint military task force supporting events around the state funeral promised a "nothing less than a first-class tribute". The White House said President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump would attend, despite not being at the funeral of former First Lady Barbara Bush. Dozens of other world leaders are also expected to be in attendance. Although US President Donald Trump has had difficult relations with the Bush family, he has declared Wednesday, 5 December, a national day of mourning. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed on Wednesday in his honor. Mr Trump also called off a press conference planned at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires as a mark of respect for Bush. Speaking in Buenos Aires, the U.S. President called Bush "a high-quality man." He was a terrific guy and he'll be missed. He led a full life, and a very exemplary life, too," he told reporters. George Herbert Walker Bush was born in Massachusetts in June 1924 and grew up in Connecticut. He entered politics in 1964 after starting a Texan oil business and becoming a millionaire by the age of 40. During World War Two, he was an aviator before being shot down by the Japanese in September 1944 while on a bombing raid. In 1945, Bush married 18-year-old Barbara Pierce, with whom he went on to have six children. His single presidential term in office was defined by the end of the Cold War and the first Iraq war against Saddam Hussein. In 2001, his son George W Bush followed him into the White House, serving two terms.
