There have been more than a few Pokémon-like indie games over the years, but Coromon has had us charmed since we got to play an early version last year. Now it’s available on Steam, and it looks to be charming everyday players, too – it’s hit SteamDB‘s trending games list, and is enjoying a warm reception from early player reviews. The devs bill Coromon as a “modern take on the classic monster-taming genre” and a “tribute to the classics of this RPG sub-genre”. Which, uh, yes. That definitely means it’s a Pokémon game. This is a top-down JRPG where you collect monsters as you adventure through a lengthy single-player story, and can then build a powerful team to challenge your friends with. Coromon has features like randomisers and a Nuzlocke mode built in to please hardcore Pokémon fans, as well as a variety of difficulty options to tailor the experience however you like. It launched just yesterday, but it’s already enjoying a ‘very positive’ rating from early Steam user reviews, which compare it favourably against its more famous Nintendo-published big brother. Coromon is available now on Steam at a 20% launch discount, bringing the price down to $15.99 / £12.39 / €13.43. It was previously intended to launch on Nintendo Switch at the same time, but that version has been pushed back to sometime later this year. If you’re craving more Pokémon PC games, you can follow that link for our rundown of the best alternatives. https://www.pcgamesn.com/coromon/pokemon-indie-game

(CNN)Ron DeSantis is going to war with Disney. On Thursday, he signaled a willingness to rescind a more than 5-decade-old provision that allows the entertainment giant to operate as an independent government around its massive park in Orlando. "Disney has alienated a lot of people now," DeSantis said. "And so the political influence they're used to wielding, I think has dissipated. And so the question is, why would you want to have special privileges in the law at all? And I don't think that that we should." What set DeSantis off is the Mouse's reaction to what critics call the "Don't Say Gay" bill, which bans schools form teaching kids about sexual orientation or gender identity and which the Florida Republican governor signed into law earlier this week. (After initially voicing lukewarm opposition to the measure, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said that it was "not what many of us were hoping for, especially our LGBTQ+ employees." He later wrote that the company's "goal" will be to get the law repealed.) DeSantis' decision to seize on the issue comes after wall-to-wall coverage of Disney's opposition to the law. Primetime hosts like Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham dedicated portions of their shows to blasting Disney for allegedly giving in to the "woke" forces in the country. It's just the latest example of DeSantis taking cues -- and marching orders -- from Fox News. On everything from Covid-19 mitigation measures (or a lack thereof) to critical race theory to the mental acuity of President Joe Biden, DeSantis has used Fox as both a guidepost and an amplifier of where to stand on these issues. DeSantis understood, rightly, that the vast majority of conservatives in the country get their news from -- and solely from -- Fox. (In a 2020 Pew poll, 65% of Republicans said they trust Fox for political coverage -- 30 points higher than any other network; 6 in 10 Republicans said they got their politics and election news from Fox.) You can see the results of DeSantis' aping of Fox talking points. Aside from former President Donald Trump, he is, by far, the best known and liked Republican in the party -- regularly winning 2024 straw polls that don't include Trump.) There's also this: Trump soured on Fox in the wake of the 2020 election as, in the main, it refused to vouch for his false claims about election fraud. "Very sad to watch this happen, but they forgot what made them successful, what got them there," Trump tweeted shortly after the 2020 election. "They forgot the Golden Goose. The biggest difference between the 2016 Election, and 2020, was @FoxNews!" Knowing this -- and perhaps seeking to amplify the rift -- DeSantis has moved into the position of Fox's #1 mouthpiece in Republican politics. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/01/politics/ron-desantis-fox-news-candidate/index.html

The brown-throated three-toed sloth is a truly unique animal that inhabits the rainforest canopies of Central and South America. The term sloth is synonymous with the word slow, and sloths certainly live up to that definition. Sloths evolved to expend very little energy because their diet does not provide them with a lot of calories and nutrition. Brown-throated sloths primarily eat tough, rubbery rainforest leaves. These leaves are also full of toxins (a form of protection for the rainforest trees). But sloths have developed a digestive system to handle these highly indigestible leaves. Their stomachs are multi-chambered, similar to a cow’s stomach, and house a mix of bacteria which helps to slowly break down the leaves. It takes two weeks for a sloth to digest one meal — the slowest digestion time of any mammal! Sloths are specially adapted to live among the treetops. Their fur hangs upside down, running from their stomachs to their backs. This is because sloths themselves usually hang upside down. The orientation of their fur helps the rain water flow away from their body. In addition, sloths have large curved claws to help them effortlessly grasp branches and vines, and hang comfortably while they eat and sleep. Brown-throated three-toed sloths, as you may have guessed, have three toes and three claws per foot. But interestingly, even two-toed sloths have three toes per foot! The difference is that they only have two claws on each. Brown-throated sloths have the ability to rotate their heads like owls. They can turn their heads up to 300 degrees due to their unique neck structure. They have nine cervical vertebrae (the bones in the spine that support the head), as opposed to the seven that most mammals have. This allows for greater rotation, which helps the sloth scan for predators like spectacled owls, harpy eagles and snakes. Once a week, brown-throated three-toed sloths descend from the rainforest canopy to urinate and defecate. Although their large curved claws help them immensely in the treetops, they make traveling on the ground very difficult. Sloths crawl very awkwardly and slowly on the ground, making them easy targets for predators like ocelots. But sloths take the risk to climb down to the ground because of a symbiotic relationship they have with the flora living in their fur. Sloth fur is rife with macro- and microorganisms like algae, fungi and moths. While these organisms benefit from having a sheltered place to live among the long coarse hairs, the sloth also gains from the relationship. The algae provides supplemental nutrition for the sloth and tints the fur green, which helps camouflage the sloth among the leaves. The fungi helps fend off parasites known to cause diseases like malaria and Chagas disease. The moths provide fertilizer for the algae. When sloths descend from the canopy, they come in contact with the beneficial fungal spores in the soil. In addition, the moths have a chance to lay their eggs in the sloth’s dung. In this way, a complete ecosystem thrives between the sloth and the organisms living in its fur. Another unique trait of sloths is that they rely on solar energy to regulate their body temperature. With such a slow metabolism, sloths must sunbathe in order to keep their body temperature up. In this way, sloths are similar to reptiles. Male brown-throated three-toed sloths can be easily distinguished from females because they have a bright orange patch with a black stripe on their backs. This patch has scent marking glands that attracts female sloths. Alpha males have a larger patches than other males. The mating season for brown-throated sloths is in the spring, which is July-November in South America and February-May in Central America. Female sloths give birth to one infant at a time. The baby sloth spends 5-10 months attached to its mother, using her body like a jungle gym. This helps prepare the baby for life hanging in the treetops. Conservation Status The brown-throated sloth is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN because it has a wide distribution in the Amazon forest. But the sloth faces many ongoing threats. Due to deforestation and development, sloths are losing critical habitat. They are forced out of the trees in search of new territory, often getting hit by cars when they cross roads. Sloths are also sold as pets on the black market to tourists. The poachers take baby sloths from their mothers and cut off their teeth and claws. These infants usually do not survive long. What You Can Do to Help To help three-toed sloths, you can help protect their habitat. Donate to organizations like the World Land Trust or WWF. You can also support sloth rehabilitation centers like Sloth Sanctuary or APPC. https://animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/brown-throated-three-toed-sloth/

Some of the opportunities that come MotorTrend's way sound better than they turn out to be. We weren't considering that fact when we accepted Porsche's invitation to be one of the first to sample its Cosmic Chase virtual-reality video game at the company's Carson, California-based Porsche Experience Center. But a few days later as we drove to the PEC to try it out, we began to think it sounded like a recipe for boredom, disaster (of the motion-sickness kind), or both. Frankly, we were unclear what we were even in for, but the agenda turned out to include nothing but quick and easy fun. It's understandable if the idea of playing a first-person-shooter video game with a VR headset strapped over your face—while sitting in the backseat of a moving Cayenne S SUV as an instructor drives it around the PEC road course—sounds to you like nothing but a rolling barf bag. The fact that it isn't is notable, and it has potentially large implications for near-future in-car entertainment tech. "The breakthrough was basically taking software that picks up the motions of the car and anticipates how it's moving and modifying this for [entertainment]-content purposes. So that's why you have a very, very low latency because it's reacting super quick to what happens in the car, in the central computing entity of the car. Signals are sent [from the car], and our software reacts immediately, so almost in real time," says Nils Wollny, CEO and co-founder of Munich-based startup Holoride, the company behind the underlying technology. What exactly is Cosmic Chase? Think of it as a similar experience to some of the movie-themed rides at amusement parks like Universal Studios. It's a simple game: You find yourself as an Earth Alliance fighter pilot, dogfighting to save humankind from an attacking alien force called the Cymex. Rather than riding in a roller-coaster-style car along a track as the action unfolds around you (Transformers: The Ride 3D is a prime example), the moving Cayenne takes on the role of coaster car. The VR headset offers a near-full field of view as you wield a controller, and you might legitimately believe you're flying through space. If the Cayenne turns left on the racetrack (actual rolling speeds are quite low, and you won't hear any tire squeal), your virtual ship matches the motion perfectly in the game, banking in the same direction past asteroids and charting a course through the expansive battlefield. Using your head and eyes to aim your sights at the enemy force, pull the trigger on your controller to unleash your arsenal and destroy as many Cymex ships as you can. The more points you rack up, the higher you'll rank you on the game's leaderboard displayed inside the Porsche Experience Center. One play/ride of Cosmic Chase takes about 10 minutes to complete and costs $49. Developed in conjunction with Pittsburgh-based Schell Games, the brilliance of the tech behind Cosmic Chase is, as Holoride boss Wollny noted, the near-instant real-time coordination between the game's software and the live vehicle data such as steering, acceleration, and braking it relies upon to produce a seamless player experience that feels almost real. This is also why, according to Holoride, motion sickness is no more of a concern using this platform than it is with any other amusement-park ride experience. Once we experienced it firsthand, it all made perfect sense and exposed our initial misgivings as laughably unfounded. What does blasting imaginary aliens have to do with Porsche, though? For now, Cosmic Chase is a fun offering the company hopes will entice more families and younger people to visit its Los Angeles Experience Center, where they might also learn about the marque and take a newfound interest in the brand. If Porsche deems the attraction a success, it might very well introduce it at its other PECs around the world. In the bigger picture, Holoride is working toward integrating its tech into various manufacturers' road cars, including Porsche, and working with gaming and entertainment studios to develop software with the potential to revolutionize in-car passenger entertainment, wellness, and perhaps even mobile workplace solutions, be it via VR headsets or their personal mobile devices. We expect to hear more from Holoride soon, but for now, if you're in the Los Angeles area and looking for a fun, unique Porsche experience that doesn't cost a fortune, we recommend taking your shot at Cosmic Chase. Both adults and teens (riders must be at least 13 years old), especially gamers, will love it—we sure did. You can book your session(s) by emailing PECLAinfo@porsche.us or calling 888-204-7474. https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/porsche-cosmic-chase-vr-video-game-experience-review/

Pakistan cricket team created history last night in the second ODI against Australia by chasing a target of 349, their highest chase ever. The chase was led by Babar Azam (114) and Imam-ul-Haq (106). They played an instrumental role in the chase. Whereas Fakhar Zaman gave a solid opening stand of 118 runs along with Imam, the game was finished swiftly by Khushdil Shah (27*). Pakistan chased the total with six balls to spare and won the match by six wickets. Pakistan captain Babar Azam, was delighted with the team’s performance and praised Australia for their efforts. “The Australian bowling line is outstanding. They proved it in the last match. Of course, chasing a huge total of 350 gives us a lot of confidence as a team, and as a player, it boosts our morale. We will try to continue with the same momentum.” Babar said during a virtual press conference. Pakistan was unable to chase a target of 314 in the first ODI, where Australia bowled well despite the dew factor and restricted Pakistan to 225 and defeated them by 88 runs. “There was less dew in this match compared to the previous game. The wicket played very well throughout the match in both innings and supported the batters and bowlers. We have to perform well in both departments and be consistent with the bat and ball that gives you a boost.” Babar added. “We had a plan to take the game deep. Partnerships are vital, and with wickets in hand, you have control, and the way Khushdil and Iftikhar finished the game, in the end, was brilliant.” Babar stated. The skipper of Pakistan spoke about their mistakes while bowling and areas that they should work upon for the upcoming matches. He appreciated the team effort of the boys and revealed the plans for the chase. “Fakhar and Imam gave us a wonderful start. A hundred run stand at the top helps team gain momentum, and we continued the same momentum.” Babar added. “I was discussing with Imam in the middle that we have to take the game deep. Wickets in hand give you great confidence and believe that we can do it. Ups and downs are part of the game, but we always believe in winning.” Babar said. Pakistan failed to chase in the first ODI despite a wonderful century by Imam-ul-Haq. After his dismissal, Babar Azam spoke about his conversation with Imam and appreciated Australia for its challenging performance. “I was telling Imam in the last game after he got dismissed that you had to take the match deep, and even today, we had the same conversation that takes the match as deep as possible, it will be more beneficial for us,” Babar added. The right-handed batter mentioned the importance of such a high chase victory and its impact on the team. He further opened up about the mindset and approach of the Pakistan cricket team. “Past performances give you confidence, and as a team, you believe that we can win from any situation after chasing 350+ in the past,” Babar added. “Our plan is to play aggressive and positive cricket, and there are some ups and down at times. After eight months, we played ODI cricket, so it takes time to adjust. The way boys played today was outstanding.” Babar stated.” Babar also commented on the critics and revealed the reason for the harmony of the dressing room that is being witnessed. “People always have opinions. We don’t focus much on what people say, and we try to keep the negative things away from the team.” Babar concluded. https://cricketpakistan.com.pk/en/news/detail/our-mindset-is-always-to-play-positive-and-aggressive-cricket-says-bab

The battle-scarred town of Irpin now stands as an example of Ukrainian resistance, and of Russian defeat. President Putin's forces managed to enter the town but didn't manage to push through it. If they had, Kyiv would have been their next stop - the capital is just a short drive away, 13 miles (21km) down the road. Blocking the Russian advance here was critical. We reached the city centre under armed escort, driving through streets strewn with rubble and downed power lines - and devoid of life. Ukrainian forces gave us a careful tour - avoiding some main roads. We were told Russian forces might be present in the forests on the outskirts, though the Mayor, Oleksandr Markushyn, insists the town itself is completely under Ukrainian control. Troops proudly showed us a Russian armoured personnel carrier which had been torn to shreds, its turret upturned. Another burnt out Russian vehicle was just down the road. But we were moved quickly from place to place because of the ongoing risk of Russian shelling. Most of the 70,000 people who used to live in this middle class commuter city fled over the past month - darting out of basements, running the gauntlet of relentless Russian shelling. Many may have little left to come back to. President Putin claims he is not targeting civilian areas, but the destroyed homes of Irpin give the lie to that. We saw extensive damage in residential areas, including one high-rise block where a shell had punched a neat hole right through a corner apartment. There was a child's red toy car on the ground, close to a forsaken playground. There were cars with bullet-riddled windscreens, and charred houses where the roofs have been ripped off. Some of the dead still lie beneath the rubble. Others were buried hastily in courtyards and parks because a proper funeral was impossible. The mayor estimates that between 200-300 civilians were killed here, some directly targeted as they fled. The final death toll is likely to be higher. The Russians had held 20-30% of the city, but the resistance here was dogged. Ukraine's defence ministry has recognised "the mass heroism and resilience of the residents and the defenders" with the honorary title "Hero City of Ukraine". The title dates from World War Two when it was awarded by the Soviet Union to several cities. Inside the city, as heavily armed police and troops kept watch, there was a palpable layer of tension. This victory was hard-fought, but troops we spoke to conceded that the Russians could be back at some point. "Yes, I believe that," said Serhiy Smalchuk, whose day job is TV presenting. "They need Kyiv, right, because Putin will lose if he doesn't take over Kyiv. So, perhaps they will try but we are prepared in case they come back, and we will defeat them." "We don't know what they are thinking," said Ivan Kolehin, a young territorial defence recruit. "I don't think they will try again any time soon. Their ground forces have been removed but their artillery can still hit us." Ivan had a day job in marketing before he took up arms. He seemed to be struggling to process the battle for Irpin, and the fact that he is still alive. "I never thought I would live," he said. "On our third day we heard a whistle and they started to bomb us directly. We sat in the basement and the ceiling started to crumble. We were pretty scared." Now he worries for the future of the city. "It's still not safe here, but in due time we will rebuild," he said. "Probably it will take years, considering the damage. I am trying not to think about the fact that every house that was destroyed was built by someone, sometimes with their own hands." He had Russian friends in the past, but not anymore. "I hate the Russians from the depths of my heart," he said. "There are no excuses for this." Moscow now says it will drastically reduce its attacks around the capital, and focus on the eastern Donbas region. In reality the Kremlin had little choice, as its offensives around the capital had ground to a halt. But in time Russian forces may regroup and target the capital again. If they do, the "hero city" will once again be in their path, and in the line of fire. As we left Irpin a trickle of civilians were evacuating on foot, crossing a river bed on planks of wood balanced precariously on rubble and boulders. This is the wreckage of a bridge, blown up by Ukrainian forces to block the Russian advance - another sacrifice made by Irpin. An ambulance was waiting for two elderly women, carried up the river-bank on stretchers - survivors of a merciless and failed Russian assault. Further up the road a departing column of Ukrainian troops - with the swagger of victory - broke into an obscene chant about President Putin. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60959667

A team of UTSA researchers is exploring how a new automated approach could prevent software security vulnerabilities. The team—made up of Ram Krishnan, associate professor in the UTSA Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Yufei Huang, professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering; Jianwei Niu, professor in Computer Science; Ravi Sandhu, professor and Lutcher Brown Distinguished Chair in Cyber Security; and John Heaps, a postdoctoral researcher in the UTSA Institute for Cyber Security—sought to develop a deep learning model that could teach software how to extract security policies automatically. Unlike traditional software models, the agile software development process is meant to produce software at a faster pace, eliminating the need to spend time on comprehensive documents and changing software requirements. User stories, the specifications that define the software's requirements, are the only required documentation. However, the practices innate to this process, such as constant changes in code, limit the ability to conduct security assurance reviews. "The basic idea of addressing this disconnect between security policies and agile software development came from happenstance conversation with software leaders in the industry," Krishnan said. "We were able to assemble a team of faculty and students with expertise in cybersecurity, software engineering and machine learning to start investigating this problem and develop a practical solution." The researchers looked at different machine learning approaches before settling on a deep learning approach, which can handle several formats of user stories. The model consists of three pieces to perform the prediction: Access control classifications, named entity recognition and access type classification. Access control classification helps the software decide if user stories contain access control information. Named entity identifies the actors and data objects in the story. The access type classification determines the relationship between the two. The team took a data set of 21 web applications, each consisting of 50-130 user stories, or 1,600 total, to test their approach. "With a dataset of 1,600 user stories, we developed a learning model based on transformers, a powerful machine learning technique," Krishnan said. "We were able to extract security policies with good accuracy and visualize the results to help stakeholders better refine user stories and maintain an overview of the system's access control." This innovative new approach will serve as a valuable tool in the modern agile software development life cycle, Krishnan said. "Since agile software development focuses on incremental changes to code, a manual process of extracting security policies would be error-prone and burdensome," he added. "This is yet another area where machine learning/artificial intelligence shows to be a powerful approach." Krishnan said the team still has several directions they would like to take the project. "We recognize that there is little additional information about access control that can be extracted or determined directly from user stories in a fully automated approach," Krishnan said. "That means it is difficult, or impossible, to determine a software's exact access control from user stories without human involvement. We plan to extend our approach to make it interactive with stakeholders so that they can help refine the access control information." https://techxplore.com/news/2022-01-automated-approach-policies-software.html

In 2021, Moore Threads, a new GPU manufacturer out of Beijing, revealed that the company is creating a graphics processor that would be constructed from its technology. The company's two flagship GPUs are displayed to the public — the MTT S60 and the MTT S2000 desktop GPUs. Moore Threads introduces the MTT graphics card series with MUSA architecture and the absence of Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD technology Moore Thread Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd. is not a household name here in the States and is not a well-known company in its home territory of Beijing. Moore Thread is a newly integrated circuit company primarily concentrating on GPU chip structure. Led by Zhang Jianzhong, former global vice president and general manager for NVIDIA, the company's focus on research and development of full-featured GPU chips and related products are shown to provide powerful computing acceleration abilities for the company's Chinese scientific and technological ecological partners. The company is still in its early stages, only founded 18 months ago in October of 2020. The company is dedicated to ushering new technology advances to a new era of graphics cards for meta-computing software and applications, constructing an exhaustive computing platform. This new platform will incorporate computing for visual, 3D graphics, scientific, and artificial intelligence while also designating an ecosystem established on cloud-native GPU computing. The MTT S60 and MTT S2000 desktop GPUs are created utilizing 12 nm process technology and are devised using Moore Thread Unified System Architecture, or MUSA. The MTT S60 delivers 6 TFLOPs of power and is fitted with 8GB of LPGDDR4X memory. On the other hand, the MTT S2000 presents 12 TFLOPS and accesses 32 GB of an unknown memory class. During the company's recent spring news conference, Moore Threads showed that the MUSA architecture sustains DirectX Runtime, a feature absent from formerly revealed and displayed Chinese graphics cards and OpenCL, OpenGL Vulkan, and NVIDIA's CUDA. The new MUSA GPUs include support for both encoding and decoding for AV1, as well as the following formats — for encoding, the new GPUs will support H.264, H.265, and AV1, while for decoding, the GPUs will support the same structures, with the addition of VP8 and VP9 decoding. Intel's new ARC DG2 GPUs announced today also support AV1. Showing the power of Moore Thread's MTT S60 graphics card, the company showcased the game League of Legends, running at a smooth 1080p resolution. While the game is not incredibly graphics mandating, the company did not reveal further details to the public. However, the recommended specifications for League of Legends is to use the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 or AMD Radeon HD 6950. The MTT S2000 did raise some eyebrows in that it utilizes AlphaCore physics simulation technology. During the company's recent spring news conference, Moore Threads showed that the MUSA architecture sustains DirectX Runtime, a feature absent from formerly revealed and displayed Chinese graphics cards and OpenCL, OpenGL Vulkan, and NVIDIA's CUDA. Moore Threads states that the company designed the graphics card to operate entirely with design software and game engines, like Unreal Engine, Unity, Houdini, and D5. https://wccftech.com/china-moore-threads-mtt-s60-gpu-supports-directx-and-can-run-league-of-legends/

A new Lost Ark update is now live after some server downtime this morning. It’s just a minor one this week, with a few slight updates and bug fixes. First and foremost, it addresses an issue where players in the Competitive Proving Grounds were starting at Bronze Rank (1,250 MMR) instead of the intended Silver Rank (1,500 MMR). Those players who had already begun their seasonal progress in Competitive Proving Grounds will see their MMR adjusted upwards by 250 to compensate, while anyone just starting out after the update should already begin at the correct 1,500 MMR ranking. In addition to this, the weekly Battle Item Bundle has been adjusted slightly, allowing players to select their preferred battle item chests from a list rather than receiving a randomly-selected one upon opening them. Other bug fixes include an issue causing the overtime timer to appear during PvP matches and an issue allowing chat text to be “unsuitably altered or displayed outside of the chat box.” The team also states that they are aware that server time is being displayed incorrectly in certain European regions observing DST, but doesn’t say when this is likely to be resolved. If you’re just starting out your journey in Lost Ark, be sure to check out our Lost Ark classes guide and list of Mokoko Seed locations to get you off on the right foot. (CNN)Utah GOP Sen. Mitt Romney said Thursday that Republicans have struck an "agreement in principle" with Democrats on a $10 billion package to help US efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, a breakthrough that could pave the way for new funds to help the United States' response efforts amid growing fears that critical resources are being depleted. Romney, the lead GOP negotiator, told reporters the plan is "entirely balanced by offsets." He said the bill text still needs to be drafted and there needs to be a cost estimate from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office before the Senate can vote on the matter. The Senate, as a result, is expected to scrap Thursday afternoon's procedural vote on the issue -- in order to give time for the bill's text to be drafted and for an official CBO score. The goal is to pass the bill next week, Romney said. The $10 billion price tag overall is less than half of what the White House was seeking. It's also less than the $15.6 billion that had been included in the government funding bill earlier this month, but had to be scrapped after a number of House Democrats opposed the way the money had been offset. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, a member of GOP leadership, expressed skepticism that the package could be finished by next week. "If there was a deal we would be voting on it ... People want to see scores and top lines and what's in it," Thune said. Romney said the bill would be paid for "almost exclusively" by redirecting money from the American Rescue Plan -- the law that Democrats pushed through last year. As part of the offsets, he said that they are pulling money that would have gone to states to provide grants for local businesses. Sen. Roy Blunt, a Republican from Missouri, told reporters additional offsets would include taking money from a fund that had been intended to go to shuttered concert venues and theaters during the pandemic. He estimated there was still about $2.2 billion from that account Democrats and Republicans could re-purpose. He also said there was aviation manufacturing money from past legislation that totaled around $2 billion that could also be used. The money is expected to go half toward therapeutics, Blunt said. He added the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services would then have "a lot of discretion" on how to best use the other half of the funding. Romney said there "may be $1 billion" of money to deal with global Covid response efforts, even as Democrats were pushing for $5 billion in global aid. Romney and Blunt predicted there would be "a lot more than 10" Republicans who would back it. "I believe we get more than 10 Republicans maybe even significantly more," Blunt said. The announcement comes after President Joe Biden made a desperate appeal Wednesday for Congress to pass additional funding and fast. "Congress has to provide the funding America needs to continue to fight Covid-19. We're already seeing the consequences of congressional inaction," Biden said Wednesday, adding that the administration already did not have money to purchase monoclonal antibody therapies, vaccines, and more tests. The White House has spent weeks warning lawmakers that if Congress didn't act soon they would expire money for vaccinations, to reimburse providers and insurers for out-of-network treatment, underwrite Covid testing and supply personal protective equipment. "Congress, we need to secure additional supply now, now. We can't wait until we find ourselves in the midst of another surge to act. It will be too late. And we also need this funding to continue our efforts to vaccinate the world," Biden said. Asked about the tentative deal Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would only say: "We're working on it, we will get there." https://edition.cnn.com/2022/03/31/politics/covid-relief-negotiations-congress-mitt-romney/index.html

Black-tailed Prairie Dog Although they stand at only 30 cm (12 in.) high and weigh about 1 kg (1-3 lb.), black-tailed prairie dogs make a substantial impact on the ecosystem of the North American plains. Prairie dogs reside in complex burrow systems. Entrances are easily spotted by the raised mounds of loose soil. These mounds allow a higher vantage point for sentries, or lookouts, to spot predators. Small close-knit families called coteries compose the base of prairie dog social structure. Coteries consist of an adult male, one or more adult females, and their young offspring. Groups of neighboring coteries form a prairie dog colony. Prairie dogs mate in March, and give birth to three or four pups in April or May. For 1-2 months, the mother will nurse and care for the pups underground. Once they emerge, the pups are nursed communally by other group members. Not only do prairie dogs rely heavily on a social network for raising young, they also use it to escape from predators. When a predator is near, communication among the colony is vital. Using a repetitive series of warning barks, prairie dogs can provide detailed descriptions of a predator by varying the frequency and pitch of their barks. For example, prairie dogs can communicate not just that the predator is a human, but also whether the human is short, fat, skinny, or tall. Their barks also indicate the location of the predator. All members of the colony remain outside the burrow to keep an eye on the threat. If they were to all retreat into the burrow, the predator would simply attack when a prairie dog poked its head of out the entrance to check if the coast was clear. In this way, their system of warning barks has proven to be most successful. Prairie dogs also perform jump-yip calls, in which they stand on the mound, throw their head back, and let out a high-pitched bark, sometimes evening toppling onto their backs due to the exertion. Black-tailed prairie dogs are a keystone species; they play an integral role in promoting animal and plant diversity in the Great Plains. Without them, life on the plains would be vastly different. Feeding on grasses, sedges, forbs (broad-leafed vegetation), roots, and seeds, prairie dogs keep vegetation short, fast-growing, and full of nutrition. Their digging action churns up soil like a plow, allowing for more fertile plant life. This in turn draws other wildlife like pronghorns, bison, and rabbits to the area to graze. Prairie dog colonies also make suitable habitats for other animals. Their burrows sometimes become homes for rabbits, salamanders, snakes, and burrowing owls. In addition, mountain plovers prefer the areas of clipped grass for nesting. Finally, prairie dogs provide an ample food source for golden eagles, hawks, swift foxes, coyotes, badgers, and endangered black-footed ferrets. Conservation Status Although they once numbered in the hundreds of millions, prairie dog po[CENSORED]tions are now estimated at around 10-20 million. Their numbers have decreased as a result of habitat destruction due to development and agriculture. Additionally, many farmers poison or shoot prairie dogs because they believe the animals interfere with cattle grazing. Finally, prairie dog po[CENSORED]tions have been largely affected by the sylvatic plague. In 2000, the US Fish and Wildlife Service added the black-tailed prairie dog as a threatened species candidate for the Endangered Species Act. After further investigation, they determined that prairie dogs were not likely to become endangered in the near future and removed them as candidates in 2004. The IUCN Red List classifies the black-tailed prairie dog as a species of least concern of becoming extinct due to the slow rate of their po[CENSORED]tion decline. What You Can Do to Help If you would like to help the black-tailed prairie dog, there are several things you can do. You can contact government officials at the local, state, and federal levels advocating further protection for black-tailed prairie dogs. You can also make donations to charities trying to save the Great Plains and its wildlife like Defenders of Wildlife, American Prairie Foundation, or Southern Plains Land Trust. https://animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/black-tailed-prairie-dog/

A new squad member is coming to the law enforcement fleet: Meet the 2023 Chevy Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle, the first-ever Silverado called to duty. The base pickup truck is a crew cab with a short bed sporting the Z71 package, which adds performance shocks, a locking rear differential, and a skid plate. Other suitable upgrades for patrolling the streets also make their way onto the police truck. Under the hood, the Silverado PPV houses a 3.5-liter V-8 producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque routed to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Upgraded parts include a heavy-duty air filter to optimize engine performance and six-piston Brembo brake calipers with 16-inch rotors in the front. It rides on 20-inch steel wheels wrapped in Goodyear all-terrain speed-rated tires. For a quick refresher, this pickup has 46.9 feet turning radius and can tow up to 9,300 pounds. Should an emergency demand for driving on rugged terrain, a two-inch lifted suspension is available and offers 11.35 inches of ground clearance and a 25.0-degree approach angle. With the knowledge that police trucks will be upfitted with aftermarket parts by law enforcement agencies, Chevrolet offers several options to accommodate specialty equipment. They include auxiliary wiring, a surveillance mode circuit, LED spotlights, and a front-middle seat delete. What's more, the headlights and taillights get standard flashers to help reduce installation costs down the road. In terms of the interior, there are optional power-adjustable cloth seats and both heavy-duty vinyl flooring and rear seats. Keyless entry, engine push start/stop, and a column shifter are standard, and with 129.8 cubic feet, there are many ways to configure storage space. The automaker throws in a 220-amp alternator and two 120-volt outlets at no extra cost. For emergency equipment, a switch bank with 30-amp and 20-amp circuits is also available. Chevrolet offers a tri-fold hardened and waterproof tonneau cover to further protect items in tow, and there's also the optional multi-flex tailgate for easier access. Furthermore, the Chevy Silverado PPV comes standard with a suite of safety features, including lane-keeping assistance with departure warning, forward collision alert, and emergency braking. As most of you may recall, before the Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle debuted in 1997, law enforcement's choice of wheels was the Impala and Caprice. The newest PPV hits the road in the U.S. and Canada beginning later this summer. https://www.motortrend.com/news/2023-chevy-silverado-police-pursuit-vehicle/

Azam hit an 83-ball 114 and Haq notched a 97-ball 106 as Pakistan chased down a stiff 349-run target with six balls to spare to level the three-match series at 1-1. Ben McDermott cracked a maiden ODI hundred in Australia's imposing total of 348-8 on a flat Gaddafi Stadium pitch. The victory is Pakistan's first over Australia since Melbourne in January 2017. In between, they had lost 10 consecutive one-day internationals. Pakistan's win sets up an intriguing final match at the same venue on Saturday. Australia won the first match by 88 runs on Tuesday, also in Lahore. Haq, who hit six boundaries and three sixes, put on a robust 118-run opening stand with Fakhar Zaman (67) off 111 balls to set the platform for the chase. Zaman smashed seven boundaries and two sixes during his 64-ball knock before he was bowled by Marcus Stoinis. Undeterred, Haq completed his ninth hundred off 90 balls before he holed out at long-off in spinner Adam Zampa's 35th over. Haq added 111 for the second wicket with Azam off 92 balls. Azam reached his 15th ODI century with a single off Cameron Green, reaching the mark off 73 balls. He added 80 for the third wicket with Mohammad Rizwan before he was caught off Nathan Ellis with 40 needed off 34 balls. When Rizwan fell for 23, Pakistan still needed 32 but Khushdil Shah cracked 27 not out with two fours and as many sixes and Iftikhar (eight not out) saw off the target in 49 overs. Pakistan's previous highest ODI chase was 327 achieved against Bangladesh at Mirpur in 2014. All-rounder Stoinis added the finishing touch with a quickfire 49, with five boundaries and a six. Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi — who missed Pakistan's 88-run defeat in the first ODI with a knee injury — gave the home side a breakthrough off the third ball of the innings when he trapped Aaron Finch leg-before without scoring. But Australia scored at will after that with McDermott and Head adding 162 off 144 balls for the second wicket, hitting boundaries with ease. Head, who scored 101 on Tuesday, smashed five sixes and six fours before miscuing a sweep off leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood, being caught by Shaheen at short fine-leg. McDermott added another 74 with Labuschagne, and during that stand hit spinner Khushdil over long-off boundary for six to complete a century off 102 balls. He was finally caught off pacer Mohammad Wasim. Despite Alex Carey and Cameron Green falling for five each, Sean Abbott chipped in with a 16-ball 28 to boost the total. Shaheen finished with 4-63 and Wasim took 2-56, but Pakistan's Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil conceded 95 runs in ten overs between them.
