  2. Microsoft has elevated its Garage project Journal, a notetaking app designed for styluses and pens, into a full-fledged product now called Microsoft Journal, the company announced Tuesday. The app offers “a delightful freeform personal notetaking experience that lets you take notes and reason through ink,” Microsoft’s Renee Malone said in a blog post. The app lets you write and draw like many other notetaking apps, but it also supports gestures like scratching out words to erase them and circling words or phrases to select them. You can use the app to mark up PDFs, which is a po[CENSORED]r thing to do, according to Malone; a pie chart in her post says that 59 percent of all page types in Journal were PDFs. Garage is Microsoft’s brand for its more experimental products. As a fully supported product, the company “has plans to address the most common requests and a backlog of new features,” Oz Solomon, principal engineering manager of the Journal team, said in the blog post. If you want to get an idea of what you can expect from Microsoft Journal, check out this video from when the app was first announced in February of 2021. If you want to try the app yourself, you can download it for free from the Microsoft Store. It’s compatible with both Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. The core of the trial focuses on whether or not Holmes defrauded investors by making unsubstantiated claims about her revolutionary Edison machine...which didn’t quite exist as it was promised. But other companies are paving the way in the diagnostics world that can do more with smaller volumes of blood. https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/5/23012164/microsoft-journal-garage-pen-first-notetaking-fully-supported-app
  3. Air travelers may see faster, safer security checkpoints—no need to open bags or remove liquids or shoes—thanks to the award-winning work of Sandia and their partners who have developed an open architecture for airport screening systems. The Open Threat Assessment Platform, developed with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, NASA and industry partners for the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate and the Transportation Security Administration, will allow officials to respond more quickly and easily to rapidly changing threats to air travel safety. The TSA's current screening systems, such as X-ray machines and body scanners, are proprietary systems that scan, annotate and report in different ways, without communicating with each other. "Only existing vendors can develop ways to address new threats, which have limited the TSA's flexibility to innovate," said project lead Andrew Cox, a Sandia research and development systems analyst previously at the TSA. "When we wanted to change how we screen in response to new threats, the technology was too rigid. The TSA compensated by adding procedures. There's a shoe bomber and you have to take your shoes off; liquid explosives arrived, and the TSA had to limit liquids and gels," Andrew said. Sandia partnered with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which developed a new high-definition body scanner, and industry partners like Stratovan to create the Open Platform Software Library, which will allow the TSA to work with any vendor for a needed algorithm. Austin Silva, a Sandia cognitive scientist who oversees development of the library, said the open architecture will provide a common set of interfaces to develop against. A wider variety of vendors will more quickly and reliably be able to create security upgrades with new algorithms that integrate into existing screening—seamlessly for travelers. "Like LEGOs, you'll be able to rapidly introduce new pieces," Austin said. The system may also be able to use different algorithms at different times based on threat level. Better data collection means safer, more seamless travel Faster innovation in detection will make air travel safer, said Ed Jimenez, an optical engineer at Sandia. The TSA will be able to collect data continuously and improve algorithms every few months. Standardizing and modularizing design with an open architecture should benefit industry. Once the TSA approves them for access, companies will be able to collaborate. Improved scanners will also improve passenger experience. "When you put an object in your bag that's mistakenly flagged as a threat, the enhanced algorithm has the potential to not ring as a false positive alarm," Ed said. "You won't have to open the bag and slow down the line." Now in its seventh year, the Open Threat Assessment Platform project has involved almost a dozen industry partners, including algorithm developers, X-ray vendors and software specialists. It's part of a worldwide push to open software architecture. Once deployed in the field, the platform will "change the safety profile of airports rapidly," Austin said. "We'll be able to say, we've seen this emerging threat; can anyone in the community develop this algorithm? From there, we'll be able to manage updates across the aviation security infrastructure." While the Open Threat Assessment Platform is likely to save the TSA money and provide revenue to industry, Sandia's involvement benefits the project because, Andrew said, "if you're going to develop a standard for one open architecture, you want it to be market-neutral. We're not going to be playing favorites with any vendor. Everything we or our subcontractors develop would be government owned. We were one of few with the technical expertise to oversee it, and we could implement contracts and partnerships to test out these ideas quickly and effectively." The Open Platform Software Library's main code was primarily developed by Stratovan; Sandia continues to contribute cybersecurity expertise for analysis. "We can be the neutral party to evaluate code, then share our results in ways that are actively changing some of their design principles," Austin said. "We have been able to build cybersecurity into the design process." Sandia also built a prototype TSA checkpoint at Kirtland Air Force Base to rapidly gather data on detection of live explosives in bags. "These systems are locked down in an airport," Ed said, "but we were able to procure an X-ray machine, stand up a checkpoint at an explosive range and collect data from real explosives scanned in suitcases. It increased our data acquisition; something that would take a full day took only hours." https://techxplore.com/news/2022-01-architecture-air-safer-easier.html
  4. Steam recently surveyed its users and has posted its updated results on the hardware used by gamers on the platform. The results show that hexa-core chips have increased in use, replacing quad-core technology as more widely used. Also, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 reaches a higher ranking, stepping into third place in the most recent results. Gamers show hexa-core CPUs are highly used on Steam in new survey results The recent Steam Hardware Survey shows that more users prefer hexa-core CPUs than the previous quad-core processors. Still, the data also reveals that users select processors with six or more physical cores (34.22% of users), while 33.74% use four cores in their gaming setups. Steam users widely used Quad-core processors, showing that 41.61% of users utilize those specific CPU designs. Additionally, octa-core processors have recently seen a surge in numbers, except for the 11 core CPU-based processors, which are more of a specialty configuration. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 shows wide use in Steam users, maintaining its 8.18% grasp of the market. The speculation behind why the GeForce RTX 2060 remains behind the company's predecessor GPU is possibly due to shortages of semiconductor chips, along with the effects of COVID-19. Scalpers and crypto mining are also probable to the data, ensuring that gamers and casual users were remaining out of reach of GPU sales. However, this last month, the GeForce RTX 2060 did overtake third in the user rankings, succeeding the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti in the tabulated data results. In March, NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3060 also increased, allowing more Ampere-based GPUs to overtake the top spots. With the costs of graphics cards declining over the next several months, allowing more users and gamers to access harder-to-find GPUs, we may see that the GeForce GTX 1060 finally be dethroned in its current spot by a newer generation of graphics cards. https://wccftech.com/steam-hardware-survey-results-show-hexa-core-cpus-are-most-po[CENSORED]r-among-gamers/

  6. There’s a whole batch of new content for breakout hit roguelike game Vampire Survivors out today in a new Early Access patch. The update, dubbed patch 0.4.2, adds a brand new stage called the tower. There are seven new achievements to unlock, which means you can expect a new weapon, a new weapon evolution, and more. The new stage is Vampire Survivors’ spookiest level yet, with gothic skull statues, a deep blue tiled floor, and vampire-friendly red carpeting accenting the staircases and traps littered around the floor. It features a new set of enemies and special events, and if you’ve been following along since last time, it’ll mark another step toward your ultimate goal of finding the resting place of the vampire himself. If you want to work out how to acquire all of this new stuff yourself, you may want to stop reading here. Part of the fun in Vampire Survivors is experimenting with new builds and discovering the new synergies yourself, so we completely understand if you want to go in blind. However, if you’d like to get going on the new level right away, you’ll want to spend some time on the last new level, the Dairy Factory. It’s noticeably harder than the previous stages, but you’ll have to make it to level 60 with any character in order to unlock the new Tower stage. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to unlock another new character, who has a new weapon. If you find the relic on the new stage, you’ll also unlock a new gameplay option. This is called ‘Hurry,’ and it makes the wave timer go twice as fast – so yeah, ‘hurry’ is the right word for it. Developer Poncle says that “Arcanas are coming soon” in the patch notes, so we’re sure to see some more exciting new stuff in Vampire Survivors before too long. https://www.pcgamesn.com/vampire-survivors/tower-patch-new-hero
  7. Here’s a not-so-quick question: if the rebellious daughter of a famous singer, the heiress to a fashion empire, a poor girl that dreams of becoming a doctor, the Draco Malfoy-esque child of a powerful politician, the son of two new rich butchers ashamed of his parentage, and a young man fresh out of high school looking for his father’s murderer ever got together, what would they do? If your answer was “start a band and release a series of international hits”, then you are probably one of the many people swept away by the Rebelde phenomenon in the second half of the 2000s. The iconic Mexican telenovela first hit screens in 2004, soon giving birth to a real life pop group that released a total of nine studio albums in three different languages before the end of the decade. Now, Netflix is about to take its chances with this cultural juggernaut with the release of a sequel series also titled Rebelde, on January 5, 2022. Set years after the end of its predecessor, the 2022 Rebelde follows a new group of musically talented kids at Elite Way School. And if you were a fan of the telenovela, God knows just how anxious you must be for the show to drop.
  8. (CNN)Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger is sick and tired of what he is hearing -- and not hearing -- from some of his Republican colleagues when it comes to Russia and authoritarian ruler Vladimir Putin. In a two-minute video posted to Twitter on Tuesday -- which had already garnered more than 400,000 views by midafternoon -- Kinzinger sharply criticizes members of his party for what he sees as their unwillingness to speak out against the crisis in Ukraine. "We are being governed by a bunch of children," says Kinzinger. "By a bunch of people that are not serious about running the United States of America and truly don't understand the threat that's out there from Vladimir Putin, from China and from some of these actors in the world that want to destroy our place here." Kinzinger mentions only House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Fox host Tucker Carlson by name in the video. But his indictment of the lack of focus on Ukraine -- and the obsession with "some woke thing on Disney or whatever it is" -- covers a decent-sized chunk of the House GOP, many of whom take their marching orders directly from the Fox airwaves. (Fox has been covering Disney's opposition to what critics have dubbed the "don't say gay" bill in Florida relentlessly of late.) Kinzinger is issuing a call to action for his party to get serious -- and castigating it for so far refusing to do so. "The world order is being challenged for the first time since World War II and they're sitting around thinking today about how we can win our next election, what the newest outrage is, what's the next thing we can do to get people angry and upset and get their money from them for our reelection," he says in the video. Will Kinzinger's impassioned message change many -- or any -- minds among the Republican base? Likely not. Around the same time Kinzinger was posting his video, Michigan Rep. Fred Upton -- who, like Kinzinger, was one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump last year -- was announcing his retirement in the wake of the former President endorsing his primary opponent. (Kinzinger has already said he isn't running again.) Given that, Kinzinger's voice -- and his warning to his party -- seems doomed to fall on deaf ears. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/05/politics/kinzinger-republican-party-comments/index.html
  9. Soft, clean, and adorable may not be a phrase you would expect to describe a rodent, but it’s the perfect description for the chinchilla, a rodent native to the Andes mountains in South America. Chinchillas are best-known for their extremely soft, extremely dense blue-gray fur. Their fur offers them warmth and protection. A predator may end up with a mouthful of fur while the chinchilla escapes. Other distinguishing features include their large dark eyes and large upright ears. They also have cat-like whiskers. These adaptations help them navigate at night when they are foraging for food. Chinchillas can be nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk). Larger than a guinea pig, but smaller than a cat, chinchillas are about 30 cm (12 in.) in length with a fluffy 12 cm (5 in.) tail on average. There are two types of chinchilla: the long-tail and the short-tail. Chinchillas eat grass and other plants. They get enough water from the plants they eat but may supplement it as needed with morning dew. They have been known to occasionally eat insects as well. The regular chewing of plants helps keep their teeth, which grow constantly, from growing too much. Another interesting fact about chinchillas is that they actually eat their food twice! After they eat plants, chinchillas produce a special kind of droppings, called cecotrophs, which they eat and re-digest. These cecotrophs contain undigested nutrients. hinchillas live together in large colonies and are highly social. Over 100 chinchillas can live together in a herd. One benefit of this is safety. When they venture out to forage, at least one chinchilla will act as a lookout. The lookout will call out an alarm if danger approaches. Predators of chinchillas include hawks, owls, foxes, and snakes. Another benefit of their large colonies comes in raising young. Within their herds, groups of chinchillas are separated into families. Both the male and female help raise the young. They mate for life and produce 2 litters of 2-3 babies, called kits, each year. The females get aggressive during breeding season (May to November), but later they will help nurse the kits from other families. Kits are born with fur and nurse for up to eight weeks. In the wild, chinchillas live around 8-10 years. Conservation Status Chinchillas are endangered in the wild, even though you can probably see them at zoos or even pet stores. They are at risk because of habitat loss due to ranching, farming, and mining. They have also been trapped for their fur, which is used to make luxury items, like coats. https://animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/chinchilla/
  10. Mercedes has unveiled the 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680 by Virgil Abloh, the “final chapter” in a collaboration with the late fashion designer. The limited-edition model features the same black and tan two-tone look seen on the Project Maybach concept car that Abloh helped design, revealed by Mercedes last fall. Mercedes will build only 150 units of the model globally when it arrives later this year. When iconic fashion designer Virgil Abloh died last November, Mercedes-Benz honored him by unveiling the Project Maybach. The magnificent off-road luxury coupe concept was a collaboration between Abloh and Mercedes’s chief design officer Gorden Wagener. Now Mercedes has revealed what it calls the “final chapter” of Abloh and Wagener’s partnership, the 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680 by Virgil Abloh, the design of which was finalized prior to Abloh’s passing. Essentially a highly customized Mercedes-Maybach S680, Abloh and Wagener’s creation is finished with a two-tone paint job akin to the one found on the Project Maybach concept car. The upper section is painted Obsidian Black while the bottom of the car, including the monoblock wheels, is coated in a tan shade. The same two-tone scheme appears inside, with sand-colored Nappa leather accented by black trim on the doors, center console, and steering wheel. Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logos adorn the center console, rear cushions, headrests, and door sills. Mercedes even says that the infotainment system has been customized—the home button has a matching tan color and a logo marking the limited edition. There are also available profile pictures for the screen featuring fashion accessories. The 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S680 by Virgil Abloh will be available in the U.S. later this year, with only 150 units produced globally. Customers will also get a 1/18 scale replica of the car inside a custom-made wooden box wrapped in tan Nappa leather, along with a special car cover with the Maybach and Abloh logo. There's no word yet on price, either for this special edition or for the standard-issue, V-12–powered Maybach S680, but both are likely to command well over $200,000. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a39641958/mercedes-maybach-s680-virgil-abloh/
  11. Pakistan staged a resounding fightback in the ODI series, taking it 2-1 after Australia had won the Test series and white-ball opener; and a passionate home crowd now awaits the requital of the T20 World Cup semi-final defeat in the tour-ending T20I. After Australia's gritty 1-0 win in the Test series, Pakistan bounced back strongly in the ODIs, registering their first bilateral series win over the opponents in a staggering two decades. And now, as the two teams gear up for the final game of the tour - the lone T20I at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium - memories of their last face-off in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 semi-final are still fresh, despite the next edition being just six-and-a-half months away. Australia’s young, new-look squad means that only three of their winning T20 World Cup XI are available to take the field. The most experienced of the lot, skipper Aaron Finch, has another chance to rediscover his best, after having registered scores of 23, 0 and 0 in the ODI series. Travis Head and Ben McDermott’s recent form lends plenty of positivity to the side, with Marcus Stoinis expected to shoulder additional responsibility in the middle order in absence of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh. Adam Zampa, the sixth-ranked T20I bowler could be the x-factor against a star-studded Pakistan line-up. The hosts’ have been in red-hot T20I form of late, having swept aside Bangladesh and West Indies 3-0 each post the T20 World Cup. Skipper Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan, the top-two ranked batters in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Rankings form the backbone of the line-up that features seasoned power-hitters in Fakhar Zaman, Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah. Shaheen Shah Afridi leads the bowling unit, to go with Haris Rauf’s raw pace and the skilled spin-bowling expertise of Shadab Khan, who could return after injury kept him out of the ODI leg. The last T20I clash between the two teams - the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 semifinal in Dubai - was an all-time classic, culminating in a thrilling finish. Unbeaten till that point in the competition, Pakistan put up 176/4 after being put in to bat, with Rizwan (67 off 52), Zaman (55* off 32) and Babar (39 off 34) being the chief contributors. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh got the chase going after Finch fell for a first-ball duck, before Shadab spun a web to reduce Australia to 96/5 in the 13th over, leaving 81 required off 46. Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade brought it down to 20 off 10 with some quality-ball striking, before the latter was shelled by Hasan Ali at deep midwicket to add to the drama. Wade struck three sixes in a row to seal the deal for Australia - a blitz reminiscent of Michael Hussey’s in the 2009 edition semifinal in St. Lucia. Three days later, Australia defeated New Zealand at the same venue to lift their maiden T20 World Cup title. What they said: Babar Azam (Pakistan captain): “You need confidence after losing the first game. The credit goes to the players as they took responsibility and showed good efforts with the ball and the bat. There is pressure but you should back your game. I try to take most of the pressure and back my boys.” Aaron Finch (Australia captain): “I thought there were a lot more positives than negatives (in the ODI series). It was just that we were on the receiving end of a couple of great knocks from Babar and Imam. It's been amazing to play here in Pakistan in front of some great fans. They've been supportive of great cricket regardless of whether it's Australia playing well or Pakistan. So we're very thankful for that." Squads Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan (vc), Asif Afridi, Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usman Qadir. 12. One of Bollywood’s most beloved couples, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor are all set to tie the knot on the April 14 this year, according to Filmfare. The outlet’s sources have confirmed that the couple will be getting married in an intimate ceremony at Ranbir’s home, surrounded by close family and friends. As per an earlier report in India Today, a source close to both the celebs spoke about Ranbir's "tight" shooting schedule, provided the actor had a gap of seven or eight days from April 13 to April 20 between film shootings of Luv Ranjan and Animal to host the nuptials. Alia, too, left the same dates empty in her schedule to accommodate the wedding. According to India Today, the much-awaited wedding will be attended by the couple's friends from the media fraternity including Varun Dhawan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The outlet reported, "Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Rohit Dhawan, Ayan Mukerji, Arjun Kapoor, Manish Malhotra, Akansha Ranjan, and Anushka Ranjan have all been invited" to the ceremony. A Pinkvilla report also suggested that Alia and Ranbir’s wedding is set to take place in the second week of April, taking into consideration their work commitments and a consultation with the family pandit -– making it all the more probable for the latest Filmfare report to be true. The duo, who have been discreet about their relationship, started opening up about it in recent times. Their PDA was on full display during the motion picture launch for Brahmastra which took place in Delhi. Speculations about Alia and Ranbir’s impending nuptials have been doing the rounds for years now and they are finally about to take place in a matter of two weeks. Alia was last seen in Gangubai Kathiawadi and the two of them will be seen next in Brahmastra which is being directed by Ayan Mukerji. The film is set to release on September 9 this year. https://tribune.com.pk/story/2351096/alia-bhatt-ranbir-kapoor-to-tie-the-knot-on-april-14-report
  13. Volodymyr Abramov was desperately trying to put out the fire in his home, in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, and calling out for his son-in-law to help. Russia troops had smashed through the front gates of Volodymyr's home, opened fire at the house, and dragged Volodymyr, 72, his daughter Iryna, 48, and her husband Oleg, 40, out into the yard. The soldiers took Oleg out beyond the gate onto the pavement, Volodymyr said, and threw a grenade in through the front door of the house that exploded with a deafening bang and set the house on fire. Volodymyr grabbed a small fire extinguisher and tried in vain to extinguish the flames. "Where is Oleg? Oleg will help!" he shouted to his daughter. But the reply came from one of the Chechen soldiers, he said. "Oleg will not help you anymore." They found Oleg on the pavement outside the gate, and it was clear from the way he was lying that he had been forced to kneel and shot in the head at point blank range, Iryna said. He was a welder who lived a quiet life on the corner of Yablonska Street in Bucha, who was taken out of his home and killed in an apparent execution. The killing is one of scores - if not hundreds - being uncovered in Bucha after Russian troops withdrew from the Kyiv suburb recently. The mayor, Anatoliy Fedoruk, said on Monday that at least 300 civilians had been killed. There is no official tally yet. Russia has denied any involvement in the atrocities. But its burned-out tanks litter the city. On the grounds of a church, there is an open mass grave with the dead still inside, some in black body bags, some loose in the sand. On the roads, there are bullet-riddled civilian cars - at least one with a body still inside. Houses are caved in by shelling, their driveways ploughed over by tanks. Residents have described Russian soldiers shooting civilians outside their homes with no provocation, and satellite imagery shows that bodies were in the lying in the streets while the Russians were still in control. The Russian soldiers who killed Oleg Abramov "did not ask him anything", his wife Iryna said. "They didn't ask anything or say anything, they just killed him," she said. "They only told him to take off his shirt, kneel down, and they shot him." She wept on Tuesday as she stood on the spot where he was killed, where a dark patch of blood was still visible on the street. When she ran out and found his disfigured body, the four Russian soldiers who dragged him out were standing casually drinking water, she said. She screamed at them to shoot her, and one raised his gun, then lowered it, then raised it again, and lowered it, until Volodymyr dragged her back inside the gate. "Those soldiers told us we had three minutes to leave and they forced us to run in our slippers," Volodymyr said. "Bucha was like an apocalypse - dead bodies everywhere, the streets full of smoke." Volodymyr and Iryna had no choice but to leave Oleg's body lying on the street and it lay there for nearly a month while they sheltered at a relative's house nearby. When it was safe to return, Volodymyr tried to bury his son-in-law on a rough patch of earth by the pavement, and the half-dug hole was still visible there on Tuesday. But exhausted by the effort, and afraid of Russian soldiers, Volodymyr carried Oleg back inside the yard and laid him there. Later, Ukrainian soldiers loaded the body into a van, Volodymyr said, and took it away. "I have no idea how we are going to find it now," he said. Ukrainian authorities have now cleared the bodies off the streets of Bucha but there are fears more will be found in the basements and yards of private homes. Officials have only just begun the process of cataloguing the horrors. And so great is the damage in Bucha, it is hard to imagine the scale of the reconstruction needed to restore it to the attractive suburb it once was. Along one road through the town on Tuesday, where burned-out tanks were piled up and almost every house was destroyed, 84-year-old Hryhoriy Zamohylnyi was sweeping the street, as if oblivious to the total destruction around him. Somehow, his home was intact - the only building left undamaged along the whole stretch of road. "I saw the war with the Germans and now this war with the Russians," said Zamohylnyi, a former engineer, born and raised in Bucha. "What you see here is animal cruelty," he said. Addressing the UN security council on Tuesday, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, accused the Russians of committing the worst crimes since World War Two, and called for those responsible to be tried as the Nazis were in Nuremberg. "The Russian military searched for and purposefully killed anyone who served our country," he said. "They killed entire families, adults and children, and they tried to burn the bodies." Ukraine has begun a war crimes investigation into Russia's actions in Bucha and nearby Irpin. It says 410 bodies have been found across the two suburbs so far. There are fears now that more atrocities will be found as the Russians retreat further and more suburbs are opened up - more bodies in the streets, more mass graves. Volodymyr and Iryna Abramov are only looking for one body, and their fear is that they will never find it. "He was just a peaceful man, a family man, a welder, who struggled with a spine fracture and was disabled all his life," Volodymyr said. "Just before he died, while I was in the yard, I saw him briefly through the open gate, on his knees, and he said his final words. He asked them why." Rodion Miroshynk contributed to this report. 14. As Russia’s war with Ukraine continues, horrific images are starting to emerge of the civilian casualties of President Vladimir Putin’s invasion. Images of bodies lying in the streets or inside shelled-out homes have been widely shared on Twitter, in addition to being published in major news outlets. When shared sensitively, such images can shed new light on the horrors of war and galvanize support for the people who need it. They can also provide important contributions toward documenting what’s happening in conflict areas. But as fact-checking and open-source intelligence group Bellingcat notes, repeated exposure to such graphic imagery can contribute to a sense of secondary trauma. Poynter argues these images should be shared with care, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists previously described the decision of The Associated Press to share a sensitive image via its Twitter feed as “exploitative and dehumanizing.” One compromise is to use a recently released Twitter feature that allows you to tag sensitive imagery, which hides it behind a warning about its content. Here’s how to use it: Add a photo or video as you would normally. On mobile, tap anywhere on the photo or video to open its editing menu. The paintbrush icon on the bottom right does the same thing. On the web, you can use the edit button on the bottom right of an image. From this editing menu, tap the flag icon on the bottom right on mobile or top right on the web. Select which content warning best describes the imagery: Nudity, Violence, or Sensitive. Twitter allows you to select more than one category at a time. Select Done on mobile. Select Save from the top right of the editing menu. Publish the tweet. There’s no simple answer for how and when images depicting the horrors of war should be used. But content warnings like these — which have long been used in other mediums like TV to warn when reports contain upsetting content — can help viewers prepare themselves for what they’re about to see. Please note that there’s also some imagery that Twitter deems too extreme to be allowed on its platform at all. Its support page notes that it doesn’t allow “images or videos where a reasonably identifiable person is clearly deceased.” It also prohibits the sharing of images or videos where people are shown dying or where images are shared for “sadistic purposes.” https://www.theverge.com/23009802/twitter-content-warning-violence-sensitive-content-nudity-how-to
  15. At the heart of much Buddhist practice is the notion that meeting with other people and practicing together in real life are the most beneficial approaches. However, individually art can be used for mindfulness and meditation. Indeed, paintings and sculptures have helped individuals and in the modern era digital media and technology can offer something to practitioners too. Writing in the International Journal of Arts and Technology, a team from Silpakorn University, Thailand discuss how virtual reality might be a useful and innovative tool in Buddhist teaching. Gomesh Karnchanapayap and Atithep Chaetnalao explain how they have developed what they refer to as a ground-breaking tool by bringing together artworks and virtual reality. They suggest that this approach to teaching enables a multi-level learning experience for students. The team explains that the experience within a virtual reality environment can encourage better memory in students. Moreover, it allows the user to "experience" an environment in safety allowing them to "know" events indirectly but with greater authenticity than is possible with conventional photographs or movies. They add that by purposefully creating an appropriate virtual world it might be possible to imbue a better understanding of the core philosophy of the given artworks. "This learning innovation is not only an effective learning tool but also suitable for new generations as a new medium to pass on the faith of Buddhism," the team writes. Indeed, the researchers have evaluated their new VR tool with student evaluation of their learning undertaken with the system and found it to provide a positive experience in terms of test scores. Test results before students were offered the VR experience were commonly around 50 percent but rose to almost 80 percent in some cases after training with the VR system. Of course, it is important to recognize that virtual reality is, like any other technology or indeed more traditional teaching approaches that rely on imagery, simply a tool. It should form part of a broader learning experience in this context for the students just as it would in any other realm. It is the teaching and the learning, not the technology that is the important part of the process. https://techxplore.com/news/2022-02-zen-art-virtual-reality-maintenance.html
  16. AMD Radeon RX 6400 Graphics Card Enters The DIY Market, An Entry-Level & Low-Power Design For Budget Users The AMD Radeon RX 6400 has so far been an OEM-only variant but there were reports that it could enter the DIY market rather soon. Now the graphics card is being listed by various retailers around the globe. As expected, the AMD Radeon RX 6400 is based on the Navi 24 GPU core and based on the TSMC 6nm process node. It features 5.4 Billion transistors within a 107mm2 die size and features a total of 768 stream processors within 12 RDNA 2 Compute Units. The card will come in reference-only clock speeds with the base clock reported at 2039 MHz and the boost clock reported at 2321 MHz which gives us 3.5 TFLOPs of horsepower to work with. There's also 4 GB of GDDR6 memory that's operating at 1750 MHz (14 Gbps) across a 64-bit bus interface. This gives us a total of 112 GB/s of bandwidth. The whole AMD Radeon RX 6400 graphics card has a TBP rated at around 54W and as such, it doesn't require any external power connectors. Now the card has been spotted in retail stores in various regions including APAC and South America. Variants such as the MSI Radeon RX 6400 AERO ITX are listed for up to $51,500 and that converts to $460 US in Argentina. As for the Chinese listing, the graphics card from AIB TUL is listed for 1500 RMB or $235 USD. Now both of these prices are higher than the $199 US MSRP of the RX 6500 XT which is a better card but once again, these are preliminary listings so it is likely that we can see some adjustments happen in the coming days. The AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT is mostly available around its MSRP with just a 1-2% price hike in various regions so in no way or form should the Radeon RX 6400 cost twice as much as the MSRP of the 6500 XT. The new card is expected to be formally announced on either 20th April or 10th May so it is advisable to not purchase these cards prior to their launch. https://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-rx-6400-hits-retail-shelves-an-entry-level-low-power-budget-graphics-card-for-diy-segment/

  18. A group of fans is making a Terraria mod that ought to scratch the itch of any Pokémon fan who fancies some creature catching on our native platform. We may never get an official Pokémon game for PC with all the typical bells and whistles you’ll see in Scarlet or Violet, but that’s not stopping modders from filling the void. Terramon is an upcoming mod for Terraria that’ll feature plenty of pocket pals, catching, and battling. One of the developers tells me that it’s been in development since 2019, though work is on and off. “It’s not my main focus which is why even now, in 2022, it’s barely completely finished,” Jamz tells us. “It’s more of a passion project I work on when I have time. Sometimes when I have bursts of energy I’ll work on it for longer.” The mod’s conception arrived as another project went awry, with Jamz believing that a mashup of Pokémon and Terraria would “just fit well together”. You can currently play a work-in-progress version of the mod, though Jamz says it’s essentially just a “pets mod with some unique features like a catching mechanic and advanced user interfaces”. Once you download the mod, a Trainer NPC will be available to join your base. They’ll provide Pokéballs and evolve your ‘mons when they’re ready. You’ve currently got all the Pokémon from the Kanto region aside from legendaries, though there are some foreign Pokémon that are only catchable during the holidays. There are plenty of neat features on the way, too. “Alongside battling, we plan to add an interactive Pokédex, berries, and eggs alongside breeding, trading, and world-generated Pokémon Centres,” Jamz says. The modder also confirms that you can battle both NPCs and players. Terramon is due to release this Summer, though you can closely follow the mod’s progress on Discord. “We’ve had people waiting for a long, long time,” Jamz says. “I think people are really sleeping on this mod and its potential to be among the most po[CENSORED]r ones like Calamity & Thorium one day.” https://www.pcgamesn.com/terraria/mod-pokemon
  19. I HAVE A hard time recommending science fiction TV shows to anyone. Not because I don’t watch and enjoy an inordinate amount of sci-fi (I do), but because when it comes to television, I’m John Wick levels of cursed. Everything I love—the stuff that’s weird and complicated and doesn’t just export Earth’s injustices into space—is doomed. Today, though? Today is a bright spot for the fans still wallpapering the internet with GIFs of Firefly, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and all other genre shows cancelled but not forgotten. The Wachowski siblings' Sense8, a sci-fi drama that Netflix canceled last summer after two seasons, is returning today with a two-hour finale.
  20. (CNN)Over the weekend, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a Republican, spoke at the Gridiron dinner, an annual gathering of Washington media and political types. And he let 'er rip on Donald Trump. "He's f---ing crazy!" Sununu said, according to Politico. "The press often will ask me if I think Donald Trump is crazy. And I'll say it this way: I don't think he's so crazy that you could put him in a mental institution. But I think if he were in one, he ain't getting out!" Now, the Gridiron is a roast of sorts -- a usually polite send-up of Washington's political culture. So, yes, Sununu was "joking." But like all good humor, there's a kernel of truth in what he had to say. Time after time over the last several years, when the topic of Trump comes up, I have had influential Republicans -- including some former elected officials -- raise questions about what motivates the former President and, well, what exactly he is thinking when it comes to what he says and does. Chatter about Trump's mental state has, in fact, been an ongoing component of his time at the top of the Republican Party. "Peril," Bob Woodward and Robert Costa's book about the final months of the Trump presidency, is larded with questions about Trump's mental state. This is in reference to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley, who was the highest ranking general in the administration, about the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol: "[He] was certain that Trump had gone into a serious mental decline in the aftermath of the election, with Trump now all but manic, screaming at officials and constructing his own alternate reality about endless election conspiracies," Woodward and Costa write. The book also cites this from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, in a call to Trump on the eve of Joe Biden's inauguration: "I don't know what's happened to you in the last two months. ... You're not the same as you were for the last four years." If anything, the intervening months have seen Trump go deeper into his election fraud fantasies -- growing more and more disconnected from actual facts. Just last week, Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to release negative information he may have about Hunter Biden, the son of the current President. This is not an academic discussion. Trump is, without question, the frontrunner to be the Republican presidential nominee in 2024. He is giving every indication that he is going to run again. And polling suggests that if the election were held today, Trump would at least be competitive with Biden. In short: While Sununu was, ostensibly, joking, it's not really a laughing matter. There are lots and lots of Republicans -- including many who are publicly supportive of Trump -- who privately wonder about his mental state and what it means for the party going forward. We should all be worried about what it means for the country going forward. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/04/politics/chris-sununu-trump-comments/index.html
