Israeli voters are about to head to the polls for the fourth time in two years. And, once again, the issue of Palestine has been almost completely absent from debate during the campaign. Once upon a time this would have been unimaginable. In 1992, Yizhak Rabin’s Labor Party won because of his willingness to strike a deal with Yasser Arafat’s PLO on the basis of land in exchange for peace. In 2001, the Labor party under prime minister Ehud Barak lost to Ariel Sharon’s Likud after the Oslo peace process had been derailed by the Al-Aqsa Intifada, which Sharon exploited by calling for a hardline military response. In 2006, Sharon’s new centrist Kadima party defeated Likud on the basis of a security agenda which combined unilateral disengagement with the establishment of security walls between Israeli territory and Palestinian land in Gaza and the West Bank. Kadima won again in 2009, but the party’s victory over Likud was narrow, too narrow to keep its leader Benjamin Netanyahu from returning to the office of prime minister. He had successfully sold himself as the candidate more likely to counter what voters saw as a growing threat from Hamas in Gaza than his opponent, Kadima leader Tzipi Livni. But what used to be a political law of nature is now increasingly becoming a thing of the past. In the three most recent election campaigns, in April and September 2019 and in February 2020, Palestine did not feature prominently in debates. And the issue has been ignored completely in the current election campaign, which ends when Israelis vote on March 23. Neither Netanyahu’s Likud, nor Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid, Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope nor any other party representing the mainstream of the Israeli public has addressed the conflict. Partly this is to do with the COVID pandemic and the resulting economic crisis facing Israel. But even before the pandemic struck last year, the prominence of Palestine as an election issue was already waning. A more substantial explanation for this is that, slowly but surely, Palestine’s status as Israel’s number one perceived security threat has been overtaken by Iran due to its nuclear program and its quest for regional hegemony. This change in attitude among voters is supported by regular opinion polls as well as campaign rhetoric, especially from Netanyahu. But it’s fair to say Iran itself has had a hand in Israel’s changing security focus. When in February an Israeli-owned cargo ship was hit by an explosion in the Gulf of Oman, Netanyahu was quick to point an accusing finger in the direction of Iran. He told the Israeli public broadcaster Kan that the incident “was indeed an act by Iran, that is clear”, adding: “Iran is the greatest enemy of Israel. I am determined to halt it. We are hitting it in the entire region.” Referendum on Netanyahu But the silence from Israeli politicians on the Palestinian issue during the past few campaigns is not only a consequence of changing power relations in the Middle East but also of internal political developments. The growing criticism of Netanyahu’s controversial leadership has been coupled with ongoing accusations of bribery and fraud. This time around, the question of whether Israel’s longest-serving prime minister has abused his office has reduced the current campaign to another referendum on his person. Netanyahu is not only being attacked from the centre and the left but also from the right. Gideon Sa'ar, a high-profile former Likud minister quit the party in December to form his own group to challenge Netanyahu. Israel’s shift to the right Another important factor in the disappearance of the Palestinian issue from election debates is the Israeli electorate’s shift to the right. Labor, traditionally the strongest opponent to Likud, hit a historic low of six seats after the 2019 elections, replaced by right-wing and centre-right parties who have been gaining support for years. These parties either support Likud’s Greater Israel plan or have no strong views on the ongoing occupation and further colonisation of the West Bank. The Israeli electorate’s shift to the right is a result of the country’s changing demographic structure. Over the past few decades there has been a strong increase in the number of Arab (Mizrahi) Jews, as well as an increased influx of Russian Jews following the end of the cold war. There has also been an explosive growth of ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi Jews and an ever-expanding number of ultra-nationalist and nationalist-religious Jews settling in the West Bank. Especially for the Mizrahi Jews, Labor as Israel’s founding party was never an option because they felt not being represented by Israel’s founding party that had been established by mainly European (Ashkenazi) Jews. Moreover, all of these groups struggled to identify with Labor’s moderate Zionist worldview that, different from Likud’s more aggressive neo-revisionist Zionism, was not necessarily based on territorial maximalisation. Rightist Israeli politicians have wilfully nurtured this shift by successfully selling the idea of Israel as a small and isolated nation surrounded by powerful and hostile enemies. As such, the argument runs, it has no other option than to defend itself and consolidate new territory for security reasons. In shaping and reinforcing this siege mentality, the rightist political establishment has not only been assisted by the military establishment and a largely biased media but also by the security fences. These have not only been effective in keeping the Palestinians out but have also helped reduce how much of a threat Israelis perceive them to be. More than 82 per cent of laptop distresses are hardware-related compared to just 18 per cent of software related, a new study said on Tuesday. According to a new white paper released by Onsitego, a leading brand in after-sales services of devices and appliance the pandemic has led to an uptake in the use of laptops and also the troubles related to it. ''The over usage of laptops and not being aware of how to correctly maintain them has led to a spike in the number of laptop problems reported by consumers. This white paper gives us interesting insights into some of the most common laptop problems that consumers face today,'' Kunal Mahipal, CEO, Onsitego said in a statement. Within hardware, while display and keyboard related problems were expected to be the topmost, surprisingly Wi-Fi connectivity emerged as the highest that stood at 27 per cent of all laptop service requests. 18 per cent accounted for keyboard and the trackpad related issues followed by display at 15 per cent and battery and charging related glitches at 8 per cent. All other hindrances, such as audio, bluetooth, exhaust fans, hard disk, overheating, physical damage, power button, and webcam, accounted for around just 2 per cent of laptops serviced. In the software category, the primary concerns are around resource-hungry applications that accounted almost half (50 per cent) of all laptop service requests. This is followed by whopping 41 per cent reporting their laptop getting hung in the middle of their usage due to inefficient background apps, malware or viruses and lastly the issues faced due to windows updates stood at a minimal 4 per cent. But getting a laptop priced above Rs 50,000 can cost anywhere between 40 per cent and 90 per cent of the laptop's price. The report also finds that typically, customers spending more than Rs 50,000 tend to opt for laptops from Apple, and if opting for laptops below Rs 50,000, they prefer laptops sold by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

When it comes to productive business communications – solid endpoints are no less important than reliable UC platforms. And one of the most important things when it comes to choosing endpoints – especially with large rollouts including employees in different levels of technical expertise – is ease of use. The folks at Yamaha seem to know this very well, which is why Yamaha UC has made sure to include software-agnostic Plug and Play products in its product range from the get-go. “We have software-agnostic, Plug and Play products for both audio and video conferencing,” shares Reece Stead, Business Development Manager for Yamaha Unified Communications in the UK. “It was always on our agenda to maintain a BYOD functionality and make sure our products are nice and easy to use.” Simplicity is Key This is how it works: Yamaha’s Plug and Play products – whether it’s their speakerphones or video collaboration soundbar – are simply recognised by the computer as an external audio and/or video device, and start operating straight out of the box. “It takes away the requirement to download specific drivers, which means that anybody can use our UC products relatively easily,” explains Stead. This also makes things much easier from an IT management support perspective. “Rather than having users on the phone asking: Which drivers do we need to download? Where’s the file gone? Can you give me the admin password? – you plug it in, and it works.” When it comes to large rollouts, this is a major advantage. “We’re starting to see customised software built into things like Hardwar-as-a-Service rollouts as well. This means that a specific software certification isn’t required – there’s a built-in back end software, which is customised and sits in the background, handling all the updates for you.“ Communicating Remotely When the pandemic hit, Yamaha found their products’ Plug and Play capability to be even more of an advantage. “It’s always been important, even prior to COVID, but I think it’s become more important,” notes Stead. “Before, you had John at the IT desk that is only two floors up. Now, it’s a lot harder to manage people who are spread out across a wide area, all working from different locations.“ According to Stead, this challenge will remain topical for at least the current year. “Both corporate spaces and educational users will have to make decisions as to what they’re going to do: Will they be returning staff to the office? Are some of them going to continue working remotely? And if they are going to work remotely, what infrastructure do they need to put in place? Ultimately, the easier it is for that infrastructure to work for the end-user, the better.” Diverse Product Range Yamaha have seen their Plug and Play products gaining even more po[CENSORED]rity as a result of the new reality, as people are forced to communicate remotely or move to larger workspaces. “We’ve seen our YVC–200 portable speakerphone becoming quite po[CENSORED]r among people working from home, seeking a high-quality audio solution which doesn’t require wearing a headset,” says Stead. “We’ve also seen this with our YVC–330, even though it was originally made for huddle room spaces. People seem to like it for home working, since it’s both USB-powered, and has SoundCap technology – which creates a bubble around you. This means that if you’ve got kids running around in the background, or a dog barking – it cuts all of that out.” Yamaha’s YVC-1000 speakerphone was initially built for office use, but this product has also been gaining more po[CENSORED]rity while being repurposed for COVID-inspired needs. “What we’ve seen is: some situations, which normally would take place in a small meeting room, now have to go into a much larger space, Stead explains. “For example, housing associations who might want to meet – they need something that will work out of the box, so they can bring their members in virtually; but will also have the reach to be able to pick up a large area. The YVC-1000 ticks both those boxes.” The company’s video collaboration soundbar, the CS–700, has also been getting some more attention.
