  1. The Australian scare over needles found in strawberries has spread to New Zealand after needles were found in a punnet of the fruit in an Auckland supermarket. The Countdown supermarket chain said it had taken a brand of Australian strawberries off the shelves. There have been over 100 reports of needles being found in supermarket fruit in Australia. Many are thought to be copycat cases or social media jokes, however. The strawberries in Auckland, originally from Western Australia state, were sold in New Zealand Countdown stores nationwide last week. The statement said there had been no reports of any illness or injury in New Zealand, but the chain advised customers to cut up any Australian strawberries before eating them. It added that the brand of strawberries affected by this withdrawal "have not previously had any issues of this nature reported and had not been withdrawn from sale in Australia". It has been nearly a week since the first needle was found in a punnet of strawberries bought in Queensland. The Australian government last week raised the maximum prison sentence for fruit tampering from 10 to 15 years, and there is a reward of A$100,000 (£55,000; $72,000) for anyone able to offer information. Growers have had to dump tonnes of unwanted fruit. They fear the scare, which has come during the peak of production, will damage sales in an industry worth about A$130m a year. On Monday, New Zealand's two largest food distributors - Countdown and Foodstuffs - said they had stopped importing Australian strawberries due to the scare.

  3. Mohamed Salah broke a three-game goalless run for Liverpool as they brushed Southampton aside 3-0 at Anfield to win their opening six games for the first time in a Premier League season. After Roberto Firmino's last-gasp strike against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Liverpool have won all seven matches in a flying start to 2018-19 that leaves them two points clear of champions Manchester City. Xherdan Shaqiri's shot deflected in off Wesley Hoedt for an early opener, with Joel Matip then heading in his first Anfield goal for Liverpool in a comfortable first half for Jurgen Klopp's side. And the points were sealed shortly before the break when Salah tapped in after Shaqiri's free-kick hit the woodwork, although Virgil van Dijk's injury after the break marred the win for Klopp. Shaqiri was making his first Liverpool start and the Switzerland star was involved in the opening goal in the 10th minute. After a corner was cleared, Sadio Mane threaded a pass through to Shaqiri on the left wing and after he cut inside to shoot, his effort deflected in off first Shane Long and then Hoedt. The lead was soon doubled, Matip rising at the back post to head home a right-wing Trent Alexander-Arnold corner won when Cedric Soares made a brilliant challenge to deny Salah. Salah's form had been questioned in a rare dry spell but he poked in the third from point-blank range after Shaqiri's free-kick crashed against the underside of the crossbar. Van Dijk was substituted shortly after the break, the world's most expensive defender holding his ribs, with Liverpool seemingly settling for three goals in a low-tempo second period, although Salah was denied a late second by the offside flag. It may be too early to talk about title races but Liverpool's form is ominous. A seventh straight win in all competitions has shown their development from last term, but two meetings with Chelsea within the next week will offer a better indication of their progress than Southampton, who offered little. They are entrenched in the bottom half and will need to perform better than this flat showing to avoid a relegation battle. A home game with Southampton was the ideal opportunity to hand Shaqiri his first start and he thrived in a lively opening 45 minutes. Involvement in two goals from a number 10 role showed the versatile former Stoke City man can be an asset for Liverpool, especially in the latter stages of the season when games mount up. Fans will hope his withdrawal at half-time was not due to injury. Southampton contrived to throw away a two-goal lead at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday but their tactical plan at Anfield gave them little chance of getting even a point. Selecting Shane Long - who has scored twice since the start of last season - as a lone striker was a strange call from Mark Hughes when he had Charlie Austin on the bench. Southampton have failed to score in five Premier League games against Liverpool and they hardly created a chance, although not being able to pick in-form on-loan Liverpool striker Danny Ings restricted Hughes' attacking options.

  6. At least 136 people have died after a ferry carrying hundreds of people capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, officials say. Many are missing and it is feared that more than 200 people in total may have drowned. Rescue efforts resumed on Friday after being halted overnight. he MV Nyerere ferry overturned near Ukara island on its way from Bugorora. It is thought the overloaded vessel tipped over when crowds on board moved to one side as it docked. Rescue operations on Africa's biggest lake have involved police and army divers, as well as small private boats and local fishermen. The BBC's Aboubakar Famau in Tanzania says fear has gripped residents of the Mwanza region as they wait to hear the fate of relatives who travelled on the MV Nyerere on Thursday. "I received a call telling me that I have lost my aunt, father and my younger brother," says Editha Josephat Magesa, a local resident. "We are really saddened and urge the government to provide a new ferry because the old one was small and the po[CENSORED]tion is big." Our reporter says the ferry's engines were recently replaced after local MP Joseph Mkundi complained about the previous ones. Local media say the ferry's official capacity was 100 people, but officials say the vessel was carrying more than 400 passengers when it capsized. It operates on a busy route, crossing eight times a day between the islands of Ukara and Ukwerewe, which are close to Tanzania's second-largest city of Mwanza. The ferry was said to have been particularly busy because it was market day in Bugorora, on Ukerewe island. The vessel was also carrying cargo, including bags of cement and maize, when it capsized around 50 metres from the shore. It is thought that many of the passengers would not have been able to swim. Tanzania's police chief Simon Sirro Mwanza, who has travelled to the area, confirmed the new death toll. So far, 40 people have been rescued and are in critical condition, according to Mwanza Regional Commissioner John Mongella. Local officials initially reported on Thursday that 100 people had been rescued. Exact figures, though, are yet to be confirmed - Reuters said the person who dispensed tickets for the journey also died, with the machine recording the data lost. Tanzania has seen a number of nautical disasters, with overcrowding often playing a role. In 2012, at least 145 people died when a packed ferry sank while transporting people to the island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. The year before, almost 200 people died in another major incident off the coast of Zanzibar. Hundreds survived, some found clinging to mattresses and fridges. In 1996, more than 800 people died when the MV Bukoba capsized on Lake Victoria. It was one of the the worst ferry disasters of the last century.
  7. Lamborghini will launch a revised Huracán and Huracán Spyder next year, with tweaked styling and more power from the V10 on the cards Lamborghini is set to follow up the range-topping Huracán Performante with a raft of revisions for the entire model range, likely to debut early next year. The Ferrari 488 rival has been on sale since 2014 with only minor changes to the base coupé and Spyder convertible variants. A more extensive update programme is planned for the 2019 car, which has been caught in prototype Spyder form testing with the usual patterned disguise. Despite the camouflage wrap, several visual changes are evident for the new model. These include a redesigned front bumper with a more intricate design for the air intakes, which could adopt active shutters or flaps to boost aerodynamics. Further visual tweaks include a new horizontal fin for the side air scoops, while more significant changes are seen at the back. Every variant in the Huracán range looks set to adopt the Performante's high-mounted centre twin exhaust system, so in turn it's reasonable to expect greater acoustics from the 5.2-litre V10. A new rear diffuser shows the car could benefit from Lamborghini's active aero tech previewed by the Aventador SVJ, while reprofiled lights surround additional rear vents to boost cooling. The Huracán will follow its facelifted Audi R8 sibling, due for a reveal later this year, and is expected to adopt the same mechanical tweaks. Both cars are expected to see power rise by around 20-30bhp, with more torque, despite a host of new particulate filtration systems necessary to meet WLTP emissions regulations. Expect fractional improvements to the 0-62mph time of the Huracán, approaching the three-second mark, and a slightly higher top speed. Lamborghini is looking to update the Huracán's cabin to ensure it keeps pace with newer supercar rivals. We're likely to see a new, Audi-inspired infotainment system, alongside uprated switchgear. Don't expect to see the amount of autonomous driver assist technology shared with other VW Group brands, as it's set to remain as pure a driver's car as it's possible to be in modern times.
  8. Cristiano Ronaldo is looking forward after he was sent off on his Champions League debut for Juventus, according to team-mate Alex Sandro. Ronaldo was dismissed in Juve's 2-0 win at Valencia on Wednesday after tangling off the ball with Jeison Murillo, appearing to pull the centre-back's hair. UEFA are yet to confirm the severity of Ronaldo's punishment, with an extended ban potentially ruling the Portugal superstar out of a reunion with former club Manchester United. Despite Ronaldo being inconsolable as he left the Mestalla pitch following his red card, Alex Sandro feels his colleague is putting the incident behind him. "I see him motivated," Alex Sandro said to Sky Sport Italia. "He has a lot of experience and he knows that what happened on Tuesday belongs to the past. "He is already looking forward, he came to help and brought quality to our group. "My understanding with him I'm learning to know him inside and outside the field. "I'm understanding his movements and how he likes to receive the ball. Slowly I will start to assist him." Ronaldo will have a chance to bounce back in Juve's next game, away to Frosinone on Sunday. Although the Portugal captain has had an uneven start to life with the Serie A champions, Juan Cuadrado hailed Ronaldo's impact. "The arrival of Cristiano certainly gave us something more," Cuadrado told Juventus TV. "We know the player he is, but I think Juventus has always been well built. "Now maybe we are even stronger because some of us have been here for a long time and they know each other well and because they have become great champions. "We hope to go far in every competition."

  12. The Spanish side, looking to win the tournament for the fourth year in a row, dominated but were frustrated until Isco curled home from 25 yards out at the end of the first half. Gareth Bale added a second when he ran onto Luka Modric's excellent through ball and slotted home. And Mariano Diaz struck late on from 20 yards for a deserved third. Last season's semi-finalists Roma were second best throughout, although Cengiz Under forced a good diving save from Keylor Navas. However, these two teams will both be favourites to progress from Group G, which also contains Czech side Viktoria Plzen and CSKA Moscow. The Russian visitors came from 2-0 down to draw their opening game 2-2. Real Madrid are unbeaten in La Liga this season after the departures of boss Zinedine Zidane and their all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who had scored or assisted exactly half their Champions League goals in his nine years at the club. The departure of Ronaldo - the central focus of their play for years - to Juventus seems to have given some Real players a new freedom. Isco and Bale were among the players to take advantage of more responsibility, with Modric playing some sublime passes in midfield. It took Julen Lopetegui's side 17 shots before they scored through Isco's wonderful free-kick, which he probably would not have been allowed to take next to Ronaldo last season. Bale, who has now scored five goals in seven games this season, looked sharp and hit the woodwork before rifling his game-clinching goal across Robin Olsen into the far corner of the net. Isco forced a good stop from close range from Olsen, who produced diving saves to deny Toni Kroos and Modric. Second-half substitute Marco Asensio almost added a spectacular showboating third when he spun in the box to lose two defenders but his no-look shot was well saved by Olsen's leg. Edin Dzeko's header was kept out by Navas, who was preferred to summer signing Thibaut Courtois in goal for Real. And 25-year-old striker Mariano - in his first game since returning to the club from Lyon for £29.7m - struck late on to give Real a scoreline that reflected their dominance.

  14. Theresa May has urged EU leaders to focus their minds on getting a Brexit deal in the next two months, saying negotiations will not be extended. At a dinner in Salzburg, she told her 27 counterparts her priorities were maintaining economic ties and ensuring promises to Northern Ireland were kept. There are suggestions the UK will put forward new ideas for regulatory checks to address the current Irish deadlock. On Thursday the other EU leaders will discuss Brexit without Mrs May present. Arriving for the second day of the gathering Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, the host, said that "away from the hard media statements, I think both sides are aware that they will only reach a solution if they move towards each other". Negotiations over the terms of the UK's exit and future relations are at a critical stage, with about six months to go before the UK is scheduled to leave on 29 March 2019. In her speech, Mrs May stressed her "serious" proposals for future co-operation between the UK and EU would ensure a "shared close relationship". The informal gathering of EU leaders in the Austrian city was the first opportunity the prime minister has had to make the case for her Chequers blueprint to other leaders collectively. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, two EU leaders said they hoped the UK would hold another referendum on Brexit, in the hope of reversing the 2016 result. Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said most of his counterparts would like the "almost impossible" to happen. Andrej Babis, the Czech Republic's prime minister, added he hoped the British people might change their minds. Campaign group People's Vote is also calling for another referendum, arguing there should be a choice for voters between leaving with, or without, a deal or staying on current terms.

  16. While some U.S. details remain to be revealed, including horsepower and an estimated range on a full charge, here are seven things beyond pricing that we did find out about the new Audi: 1. It's Not Huge Looking very Audi and a bit like a mashup of design elements from the German brand's other SUVs, the five-seat e-tron is 193 inches long on a wheelbase of 115.1 inches. That compares with a 117.7-inch wheelbase and 184.3-inch length for the compact Jaguar I-Pace. Cargo space is 28.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 57 cubic feet with it folded, both of which are a bit more than the I-Pace's 25.3 and 51 cubic feet. And like the I-Pace, there is a small front trunk (or "frunk"). With an optional tow package, it also can pull up to 4,000 pounds. 2. It's Modestly Quick Audi did not give us net U.S. horsepower or torque for the two electric motors, which it said would be announced closer to launch. It did, however, estimate zero-to-60-mph performance of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph. All-wheel drive that can predictively engage the front axle is standard, as is an adaptive air suspension that can raise or lower the vehicle up to 3 inches in response to speed, driving conditions and selection among the seven drive modes. 3. Fast Charging Is Standard All e-trons will have a 95-kilowatt-hour battery pack under the floor that has its own temperature management system to recover heat waste and help condition the cabin as well as extend range. Audi didn't specify U.S. range, but the size of the battery would suggest something north of 200 miles. The e-tron will feature standard DC fast-charging capability up to 150 kilowatts — increasingly available at public stations — that can deliver an 80 percent charge in roughly 30 minutes. Also standard is 9.6-kilowatt charging capability for a 240-volt home charger; Audi did not estimate a charge time other than to say "overnight." An Audi app provides remote charging and cabin-conditioning control, and Audi also announced a deal with Amazon to have Amazon Home Services provide a home charging installation that can be ordered online. Buyers will get 1,000 kilowatt-hours of free charging at public sites from Electrify America, the charging network being created by Volkswagen as part of its settlement for the diesel emissions scandal. 4. Don't Expect Those Video Mirrors The e-tron includes many aerodynamic features, including special 20-inch wheels and underbody panels, but one we won't see soon in the U.S. are the slim side cameras in place of conventional mirrors. The image is displayed on each side of the interior, and while they're more aerodynamic and can cut noise, they also pose other potential issues and are not yet allowed by U.S. regulators. 5. Coaster Brakes? The e-tron motor system is designed to recover energy as soon as you back off the accelerator as well as when you press the brake pedal. The motors also supplement the braking by the friction brakes, and Audi estimates that the e-tron motors will provide the deceleration in 90 percent of braking situations. Steering-wheel paddles also let the driver specify the amount of regeneration, allowing near-one-pedal operation in the most aggressive setting. 6. Audi Inside The e-tron interior will seem familiar from Audi's latest redesigned models, such as the new Q8, including a configurable instrument cluster and the new two-touchscreen multimedia and control system with 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch screens. But an e-tron detail is a hand rest above the console that incorporates a gear selector operated with your thumb and index finger. Navigation is standard, including EV-specific details such as route mapping that includes public charging stations. A panoramic moonroof and four-zone climate control are standard. An expected selection of luxury options is offered, including a selection of upholstery and trim, massaging seats, ambient lighting and Bang & Olufsen premium audio. 7. Advanced Driver Tech Optional An optional Driver Assistance Package adds an array of sophisticated safety and driver assistance technology including adaptive cruise control that includes adjusting for road conditions and curves, intersection assist, parking assist and a 360-degree camera system.
  17. Jordan Henderson was lauded by Jurgen Klopp for his display for Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Jordan Henderson after his team's win over Paris Saint-Germain, hailing the club captain for a "brilliant performance". Henderson, 28, made just his second start of the season, dominating in midfield as the Premier League side beat PSG 3-2 in a Champions League thriller at Anfield. Klopp was full of praise for Henderson, who has been eased back after his World Cup campaign with England. "It's not only that we fight a lot and I love that but we played football as well, and that looked really confident. We look now much more tuned than it maybe was in the past," he told a news conference. "We played a midfield [Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum] who played a lot of times last season together. That was the reason for that. "It was clear that Hendo would come back and what a brilliant performance of him. Physical-wise, so good, because obviously as we know that the players after the World Cup normally struggle a bit. "He is ready now and that's really important for us. We didn't learn a lot which we didn't know before, but it's nice to see that we can do it. That's it."

  20. The mobile social network, a former competitor of Facebook, on Monday said it'll be shutting down over the next two months. Starting Oct. 1, you won't be able to download the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store. Path will shut its service on Oct. 18, then customer service will close on Nov. 15. "We started Path in 2010 as a small team of passionate and experienced designers and engineers," the company wrote in a blog post. "Along our journey we have laughed and cried with you, and learned valuable lessons. And it is now inevitable to wind down the service to prioritize our work to serve you with better products and services." Before the service closes down, you can download a copy of your data from the company's website. You can also get a refund by emailing the company at service@path.com. You can read more here on how to navigate this process. Path's idea of social networking was on a smaller scale than Facebook, and it was simpler as well. The app didn't have brand pages, groups or event invitations. It limited the number of connections you could have to 150 so you could share personal moments with loved ones. The company was acquired by Daum Kakao, a South Korean messaging app maker, in 2015. Path didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
  21. After a tersely worded ultimatum was issued from the government of Greece’s North Aegean region that demanded immediate action be taken to clean up the overcrowded Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, preparations to send up to 3,000 migrants to the Greek mainland are now being put into motion. According to what an EU source told New Europe on September 17, after repeated calls for the EU executive’s “Plan B” on the evacuation of the overcrowded camp, “the European Commission, having repeatedly alerted the Greek authorities about the very challenging situation at (the) Moria (camp) has discussed and the urgent need to address this situation and, as always, ensured the availability of EU funds to help face the challenges. The Commission is also offering its support to transfer vulnerable applicants to the mainland to help ease the pressure on the island.” According to the data available, over 32,000 at-risk refugees have been transferred to the mainland with the support of the UNHCR, EU funding or own means. “More than 3,000 migrants whose geographic restrictions have been lifted are expected to leave the islands for the mainland – the Commission is hoping to accelerate this process,” the EU source told New Europe ahead of European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos’ visit to Athens later in the week. The Commissioner is expected to discuss matters concerning the implementation of the EU-Turkey statement during his meeting with the Greek authorities. Greece has born the brunt of Europe’s refugee crisis with over 60,000 migrants still stuck in refugee camps across the country. Aid organisations estimate that more than a million and a half migrants have illegally crossed into Europe since the summer of 2015, the majority of which used Greece as their entry point into the European Union.
  22. David Beckham joked that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is "really, really old" as he lauded the LA Galaxy superstar following his 500th career goal. Ibrahimovic joined Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi as the third active player to score 500 goals between club and country during the Galaxy's 5-3 loss to Toronto in MLS on Saturday. The 36-year-old striker celebrated the milestone thanks to an outrageous roundhouse finish – Ibrahimovic spinning and volleying with the outside of his foot in the first half. Former Galaxy captain Beckham, who played alongside Ibrahimovic at French champions Paris Saint-Germain, heaped praise on Sweden's all-time leading scorer. "Zlatan, I want to say congratulations," Beckham said in a video shared by the Galaxy "500 goals. What a career, what a player, what an achievement. Pleasure to play with you and against you. Pleasure to be your friend. "500 goals… that makes you really, really old. But on a serious note, congratulations mate. "One thing you need to work on. You're a little bit shy. So, work on it. You'll get better. Congratulations mate. Incredible." After starting his career at Malmo (18) in Sweden, Ibrahimovic has gone on to score goals for Dutch giants Ajax (48), Juventus (26), Inter (66), Barcelona (22), AC Milan (56), Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United (29). Ibrahimovic was PSG's top goalscorer with 156 goals before Edinson Cavani broke his record in January.
