  4. Google will not renew a contract to do artificial intelligence work for the US Pentagon, company sources say. The decision follows strong opposition in the technology giant's workforce. A number of Google employees resigned and thousands of others signed a protest petition against taking part in the Pentagon project, known as Maven. They feared it was the first step towards using artificial intelligence for lethal purposes. There has been no official statement from Google. According to company sources, top executive Diane Greene told staff on Friday there would be no follow-up after the current contract expired next March. But Kate Conger, a journalist for the technology news website Gizmodo, told the BBC that Google had not cancelled Project Maven and did not appear to have ruled out future work with the military. The contract is reported to be worth less than $10m (£7.5m) to Google but could potentially lead to more extensive cooperation with the Pentagon. Meet Norman, the psychopathic AI Project Maven involves using machine learning and engineering talent to distinguish people and objects in drone videos. In April up to 4,000 Google employees signed an open letter saying that by its involvement in the project the internet giant was putting users' trust at risk, as well as ignoring its "moral and ethical responsibility". A report by Gizmodo said that senior leadership at the company was deeply conflicted about the effects of the partnership with the Pentagon. Internal emails suggested that executives saw the contract as a huge opportunity while being concerned about how the company's involvement would be perceived, Gizmodo said.

  6. Fifteen people have died and dozens more have been injured in the latest protests against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, officials say. Activists say pro-government forces opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters who marched through the capital Managua on Wednesday. The government and police blamed "delinquent groups" for the violence. More than 90 people have now died in the protests, which began in April and were triggered by social welfare cuts. The cuts were later scrapped but the protests evolved into a rejection of the Ortega government and thousands of people have since taken to the streets. "The number of people killed as a product of the actions of delinquent groups who operate wearing masks is 15," deputy police director Francisco Diaz said on Thursday. He added that scores of people had been injured, in what was one of the worst days of violence since the protests began. Some of the demonstrators were reported to have thrown projectiles during Wednesday's march. The army said it was treating some of the injured, which included police officers. The country's Catholic Church condemned Wednesday's clashes as "organised and systematic aggression" and suspended talks with the government that had been scheduled for Thursday. It said it could not preside over a dialogue between the protesters and the government following the violence. Earlier this month, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) visited Nicaragua and said it had seen grave violations of human rights during the protests. It said state security forces and armed third parties had used excessive force.

  8. Archaeologists at Pompeii have uncovered the remains of an unfortunate man who was decapitated by an enormous rock while fleeing the volcano. Nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, killing many Pompeii residents and famously freezing them in place. This skeleton appears to be from a man who survived the initial explosion and was fleeing the doomed city. A leg injury, however, may have slowed him down before he was crushed by the huge stone hurtling through the air. Pompeii archaeologists say the skeleton shows signs of a bone infection in his leg, which could have made walking - much less running - very difficult. But it was not slow-moving molten lava that killed most of the people of Pompeii. Instead, a vast cloud of hot gas and fragments - called a pyroclastic flow - surged over the city, killing its inhabitants wherever they were, and burying them in ash, preserving their final moment. Archaeologists believe it was this lethal cloud which struck their newest discovery, throwing him backwards as he turned to look at it. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was found on the first floor of a building, above the layer of small stones carried by the cloud. But the force of the erupting gas and rock also picked up an enormous rock - which experts think might have been a door jamb (the vertical part of a door frame) - and hurled it at the victim, crushing his upper body near the throat and possibly removing his head, which is missing. Archaeologist Massimo Osanna said the skeleton was an "exceptional find". Apart from the "emotional impact" of these discoveries, they allow archaeologists to study the people of the city, and even how they tried to escape the eruption of Vesuvius. This latest discovery is part of fresh excavations in Pompeii undertaken using modern technology.

  10. Palestinian militants in Gaza have fired dozens of mortars at Israel in the heaviest such barrage in years. More than 30 were launched. Most were intercepted though one landed in the yard of a kindergarten, slightly wounding a worker. Israel responded with air strikes on militant positions in Gaza. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The latest flare-up follows weeks of Israel-Gaza violence which has seen more than 100 Palestinians killed. They were shot dead by Israeli snipers amid protests which saw thousands of Palestinians mass on the Gaza-Israel border in support of their refugee po[CENSORED]tion. Israel said its snipers had opened fire on attackers or people attempting to infiltrate under cover of protests, but UN and human right officials have accused Israel of using disproportionate force. 'Forceful response' Sirens warning of incoming fire rang out in Israeli communities around the Gaza Strip on and off on Monday. The Israeli military said the biggest volley of mortar shells was fired at several sites in Israel in the early hours, with most intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile defence system Some mortars landed, included one in the grounds of a kindergarten in the Eshkol region, which borders Gaza, shortly before pupils were due to arrive. More shells were launched in subsequent attacks, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli military "will respond very forcefully" to the attacks, which he blamed on Gaza's ruling Hamas movement and the smaller Gaza-based militant group Islamic Jihad. Following the barrage, Israeli aircraft struck bases belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad, local residents said. The official news agency of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, Wafa, said Israel had also fired at least 10 artillery shells at sites east of Gaza City after the first mortar attack, causing damage but no injuries. Hours earlier, machine-gun fire from Gaza hit houses and vehicles in the Israeli border town of Sderot, though without causing injuries, the IDF said. The upsurge in violence came after Israeli tank fire killed four militants in Gaza in two separate incidents at the start of the week. A member of Hamas was killed on Monday after Israeli soldiers caught a group attempting to breach the border and carry out an attack, while on Sunday three members of Islamic Jihad were killed after placing an explosive device on the border fence, the IDF said. The latest cross-border violence is some of the heaviest since a 50-day war between Israel and militants in Gaza in 2014. That followed an upsurge of rocket fire into Israel, and the killing by Israel of the commander of Hamas's military wing.

  13. Members of the UN have expressed dismay over Syria becoming president of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva. The move comes just weeks after the latest reported chemical weapons attack, in which the Syrian authorities are widely believed to have used chemical agents against civilians. "The UK deplores the fact that Syria will assume the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, given the regime's consistent and flagrant disregard of international non-proliferation and disarmament norms and agreements," said a statement by British diplomats. Meanwhile, Robert Wood, Washington's ambassador in Geneva, tweeted: "Monday, May 28 will be one of the darkest days in the history of the Conference on Disarmament with Syria beginning its four-week presidency. The Damascus regime has neither the credibility nor moral authority to preside over the CD. The international community must not be silent." In an earlier tweet, he called on Russia to ask Syria to step aside. That appeal appears to have met with no response. PR disaster? So is this is a public relations disaster for the United Nations? A sign the body is dysfunctional? UN officials have been wearily pointing out that the rotating presidency system was devised by member states, primarily to prevent more powerful countries constantly jockeying for position. Syria takes over from Switzerland simply because it follows Switzerland in the alphabetical list of member states. And the Conference on Disarmament is not even a UN body, but holds its meetings at the UN in Geneva. "Even the secretary general himself cannot change the system," said one UN official. "It has to be changed by member states." Nevertheless it was the CD which painstakingly negotiated the convention banning chemical weapons, which was signed by Syria. The prospect of Syria sitting in the president's chair, when there is widespread evidence that it has used nerve gas against its own people, is to many people shocking. Under watch So is there a way to prevent Syria taking up the presidency? Not easily, as the UK acknowledges later on in its statement, pointing out that it would "require consensus amongst all CD members, Syria included, for Syria not to take on the presidency, so we cannot stop that happening. "What we will do is ensure the Syrian presidency cannot inflict damage on the work of the Conference of Disarmament and its subsidiary bodies." Quite what action the UK, the US, or other member states are planning to take remains unclear, though it is expected that further expressions of concern will be voiced during the conference session on Tuesday. Ensuring the Syrian presidency "cannot inflict damage" on CD work will not be too difficult. The CD has been stalled on all major issues for many years now, something UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres lamented just last week, pointing out that it had "produced very little" for decades, and calling for it be "reinvigorated". But one thing the CD did produce is that convention on chemical weapons, and out of that convention came the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The OPCW is investigating Syria on numerous counts, and believes that chemical weapons were used, or were more than likely to have been used, in 14 cases so far. Every single use is a crime under international law. Widespread use, of which there is evidence in Syria, is likely a crime against humanity. So Syria may sit in the ceremonial president's chair for four weeks in Geneva, presiding over a body which has no pressing business before it, but it won't, in the words of one disarmament analyst "be let off the hook".

  15. Fiat Chrysler is recalling 4.8 million US vehicles over a defect that could prevent drivers from turning off cruise control. It warned owners, including those outside the US, not to use the function until they get software upgrades. The Italian-American car maker said no injuries or crashes were related to the large recall campaign. But it had one report of a driver of a 2017 Dodge Journey being unable to turn cruise control off. The firm said an "unlikely sequence of events" could lead to drivers being unable to cancel cruise control. Fiat Chrysler said drivers could still stop their car by continuously putting on the brakes or by shifting into neutral gear and braking. Most of the vehicles being recalled cover models built between 2014-2018. Some markets outside the US, including Canada and Mexico, are also affected, but the total number of vehicles involved globally is not known. The firm said it planned to contact affected customers. Among the vehicles being recalled are the Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Journey, Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks and Ram 3500/4500/5500 cab trucks. Some markets outside the US and Canada are also recalling certain Fiat Fremont models. The problem Fiat Chrysler said that at times its cruise control systems automatically start accelerating to help cars keep at the same speed, such as when going up a hill. If that automatic acceleration happens at the same time as a short-circuit in the car's electrical system, a driver could be unable to switch off cruise control. Fiat Chrysler said vehicles may be put in "park" once stopped, which turns cruise control off. The carmaker, which in 2015 was hit with penalties from US regulators totalling $175m (£131m) for safety lapses, did not say how much the recalls would cost.

  19. Malaysian police say they found $28.6m (£21.3m) in cash stuffed in bags during a search of several apartments linked to ousted leader Najib Razak. The raids were related to an investigation into state development fund 1MDB, from which billions of dollars were allegedly stolen. Mr Najib himself was accused of pocketed $700m, but was cleared of wrongdoing by Malaysian authorities. His political party has said the cash found by police is campaign funds. United Malays National Organisation (Umno) said it included party contributions and money left over after Mr Najib's shock election loss to his former ally Mahathir Mohammad this month. In a statement, Unmo said the funds were in the process of being transferred to the party's new leadership when they were seized. It said the party would "seek to recover" the money to help it rebuild after its defeat. Fresh investigations into the 1MDB case have begun following Mr Mahathir's election. Mr Najib has been questioned twice this week by the anti-corruption commission. 'You eat our money, we eat your chocs' Police searched three apartments in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, last week. Amar Singh, the head of the commercial crime division, told reporters on Friday that the money was found inside 35 bags, while another 37 bags contained watches and jewellery. Last week Mr Najib's lawyer Harpal Singh Grewal said his client was "very unhappy" with the raids. The ex-prime minister also complained that officers who combed his properties had helped themselves to food and chocolates - sparking an online campaign which saw social media users offer to deliver chocolates to police stations in Malaysia. "You eat our money. We eat your chocs," said one user on Twitter, a reference to allegations that Mr Najib had stolen 1MDB money. Corruption claims Mr Najib has long faced accusations of corruption and mismanagement over 1MDB, which he set up in 2009. The fund was meant to turn Kuala Lumpur into a financial hub and boost the economy through strategic investments. But it started to attract negative attention in early 2015 after it missed payments for some of the $11bn it owed to banks and bondholders. The Wall Street Journal then reported it had seen a paper trail that allegedly traced close to $700m from the fund to Mr Najib's personal bank accounts. Mr Najib has consistently denied taking money from 1MDB or any public funds. He was cleared by local authorities of all charges.
  20. The missile that downed a Malaysia Airlines flight over eastern Ukraine in 2014 belonged to a Russian brigade, international investigators say. For the first time, the Dutch-led team said the missile had come from a unit based in western Russia. All 298 people on board the Boeing 777 died when it broke apart in mid-air flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. It was hit by a missile fired from rebel-held territory in Ukraine. Russia says none of its weapons was used. But on Thursday Wilbert Paulissen, a Dutch official from the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), told reporters: "All the vehicles in a convoy carrying the missile were part of the Russian armed forces." He said that after studying all available photos and footage, investigators had been able to trace the convoy to Russia's 53rd brigade, which consists of 300 people based in the city of Kursk. What happened to MH17? The incident occurred at the height of the conflict between government troops and pro-Russian separatists. The plane left Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on 17 July 2014 and was due to arrive at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on the following day.The plane lost contact with air traffic control about 50km (30 miles) from the Russia-Ukraine border. It crashed in the Donetsk area, in territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists. Footage was later released by the Ukrainian government suggesting that a Russian-made Buk missile had been moved across the Russian border the next day. What has been said about the incident? In October 2015 the Dutch Safety Board concluded that the plane had indeed been hit by a Buk missile. September 2016, the JIT - which includes officials from the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Ukraine - reached a similar conclusion in a preliminary report. It said it had "irrefutable evidence" that the missile had been brought in from Russian territory and fired from a field controlled by pro-Russian fighters. The investigators simulated various trajectories of the warhead. They showed it had exploded metres above the aeroplane's nose, showering the aircraft with fragments. Russia has repeatedly denied that its forces were involved.

  22. Israel says its troops used live ammunition to prevent a border fence from being damaged or breached. Hundreds of Palestinians were wounded by the live ammunition that was fired. Israeli troops killed at least 58 Palestinians along the Gaza border on Monday, health ministry officials said, as demonstrators streamed to the frontier as the United States opens its embassy in Jerusalem. Amid deadly clashes, President Donald Trump's top aides and supporters are celebrating the opening of the new US embassy in Jerusalem as a campaign promised fulfilled. Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, along with US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin were leading the ceremonies. Turkish Foreign Ministry called US actions null and void in an official statement. "We strongly condemn the decision of the US Administration to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem violating international law and all relevant UN Resolutions," Ankara said. TRT World's Soraya Lennie reports from occupied East Jerusalem. Protests intensified on the 70th anniversary of Israel's founding, with loudspeakers on Gaza mosques urging Palestinians to join a "Great March of Return". Black smoke from tyres burned by demonstrators rose into the air at the border. "Today is the big day when we will cross the fence and tell Israel and the world we will not accept being occupied forever," said Gaza science teacher Ali, who declined to give his last name. "Many may get martyred today, so many, but the world will hear our message. Occupation must end," he said. Israeli troops killed 55 Palestinians on Monday, including a 12-year-old boy and a man in a wheelchair, and over 2,000 protesters were injured. The man in the wheelchair had been pictured on social media using a slingshot. TRT World's Courtney Kealy reports from the Israel-Gaza border The killings have drawn international criticism, but the United States, which has angered the Palestinians and Arab powers by relocating its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, has echoed Israel in accusing Gaza's ruling Hamas movement of instigating violence, an allegation it denies. "What a moving day for the people of Israel and the State of Israel," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Jason Greenblatt, Trump's Middle East peace envoy, said on Twitter that "taking the long-overdue step of moving our Embassy is not a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace deal. Rather, it is a necessary condition for it." But Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah said Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December and the relocation of the embassy were "blatant violations of international law". "Choosing a tragic day in Palestinian history (to open the Jerusalem embassy) shows great insensibility and disrespect for the core principles of the peace process," Hamdallah wrote. Most countries say the status of Jerusalem - a sacred city to Jews, Muslims and Christians - should be determined in a final peace settlement and that moving their embassies now would prejudge any such deal. But Guatemala, which received support from Israel in its counter-insurgency campaigns in the 1980s, plans to open an embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday. Its ambassador visited the new site, in an office building in the western part of the city, on Monday. Paraguay is to follow suit later this month In London, the British government said it had no plans to move its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and said it disagreed with the US decision to do so. The Russian government said it feared the embassy move would increase tensions across the Middle East.
