The Parker Solar Probe will fly within 3.9 million miles of the sun's surface and will "touch the sun", according to NASA. NASA is close to launching a spacecraft on a voyage to the sun that will give scientists their closest-ever view of the star. As the probe orbits the sun, it will experience extreme radiation with temperatures expected to reach 1,377C (2,510F), which is close to the melting point of steel. In order to combat the intense temperatures, the probe has been covered with a carbon composite coated ceramic capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1,650C (3,002F). After it launches, the probe will travel at a record-breaking 430,000 miles per hour, the fastest speed ever achieved by a spacecraft. It will take six years for the probe to make to reach its closest point to the sun, in 2024, by using Venus' gravity to bring itself nearer and nearer to the star. The craft's mission is to help scientists understand more about the nature of the sun by taking measurements of solar winds, a flow of ionised gases. If scientists understand more about solar activity, they could use it to predict large solar eruptions that pose a threat to satellites orbiting the Earth. Scientists also hope the probe can help them to answer why the corona, the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, is 300 times hotter than its surface.

A tanker reportedly carrying liquefied petroleum gas drives into the back of another lorry near Bologna, causing a huge fireball. At least two people have died and up to 70 been injured after a tanker drove into the back of another lorry on a motorway in Italy, causing two massive fireballs. Video released by police shows the tanker driving along a motorway near Bologna. Another truck stops in front of it but the tanker keeps going, turning sideways as it hits the other vehicle. After only a second or two a powerful fireball erupts, sending flames and thick, dark acrid smoke billowing into the sky. The tanker was carrying liquefied petroleum gas, news agency ANSA reported. Later footage is even more shocking. By this time the carriageway is almost empty of vehicles but the fire is still producing a tower of smoke. A second explosion erupts, much more powerful than the first, filling the sky with flames and spreading either side of the carriageway. Video footage filmed from a car which had stopped a short distance away also shows the huge plume of dense black smoke - followed by a thunderous explosion which rocks the car. Other footage shows a huge crater in the motorway and debris strewn around the charred carriageway. The crash, near Bologna airport, caused part of an elevated section of the motorway to collapse, with several vehicles in a car park below it catching fire and exploding. It took three hours to extinguish the flames, firefighters said. More than a dozen people were seriously injured, local media said, including police officers and carabinieri (military police). Some are said to be suffering serious burns. Many were apparently hit by debris and shattered glass. Several car dealerships were said to be in flames, and the windows of houses blown out. Firefighters sent multiple teams to the scene, including an urban search and rescue squad.
