  1. 2021 Ford Bronco Cars.com photo illustration by Paul Dolan; manufacturer image Everyone is excited about the upcoming, all-new 2021 Ford Bronco two-door and four-door models — the first real head-to-head competition for the venerable Jeep Wrangler since … well, ever! Each Bronco is a convertible; each one has removable doors; each one has a standard four-wheel-drive system, just like the Wrangler. And in another nod to the Jeep brand’s habit of giving its trim levels names instead of letters (Sport, Willys, Overland, Sahara, Rubicon, High Altitude, etc.), the Bronco will be offered in six versions, plus a limited edition, in a change to the way Ford offers up its 4×4 brand. Related: No XL, XLT, Lariat and so on, here. Nope, in a nod to the great outdoors and America’s national parks, the new Bronco trim levels will have names: base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Wildtrak, Badlands and the limited First Edition. There’s also going to be a stand-alone Sasquatch Package that you can get on any model. And how you order your Bronco is going to change a little bit, too. But what do all of these trim names mean, what do they come with and how much do they cost? How does one option up a Bronco, given that it’s a little different than other Fords? Ford says that you do it like this: First, pick a trim depending on how much you want to spend and what level of off-road readiness you desire; then pick a powertrain (four-cylinder or V-6); choose a four-wheel-drive system from the two available; then choose one of three equipment packages (Mid, High or Lux — more on these later ); decide if you want the Sasquatch Package; then it’s just a matter of picking a color. Read on, and we’ll share with you how Ford is doing it differently with the new Bronco family. Note that all prices listed include a $1,495 destination fee.
  2. Life coaches and motivational speakers often treat positive thinking as the key to happiness. Self-help books tend to promote a similar message, with Norman Vincent Peale’s bestseller The Power of Positive Thinking claiming:When you expect the best, you release a magnetic force in your mind which by a law of attraction tends to bring the best to you.The idea is not merely that optimistic thinking dispels present gloom, but that it also launches a self-fulfilling prophecy whereby simply believing in success delivers it. In happiness terms, optimistic thinking seems to be a win-win strategy.Perhaps this is why unrealistic optimism – the tendency to overestimate the likelihood that good things will happen and underestimate the likelihood that bad things will happen – is one of the most pervasive human traits. Studies consistently show that a large majority of the po[CENSORED]tion (about 80% according to most estimates) display an overly optimistic outlook. But pessimism does have its advocates. Despite the fact that expecting the worst can be extremely psychological painful, pessimists are, by their nature, fairly immune to disappointment. As the English writer Thomas Hardy noted:Pessimism is, in brief, playing the sure game. You cannot lose at it; you may gain. It is the only view of life in which you can never be disappointed. Having reckoned what to do in the worst possible circumstances, when better arise, as they may, life becomes child’s play. This view receives implicit support from Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman and his late colleague, Amos Tversky. According to their concept of loss aversion, we feel twice as much pain from losses than we experience joy from equal gains. For example, the pain of an unexpected loss of £5 is twice as strong as the joy of an unexpected gain of £5. In most cases, whether a gain or a loss is perceived, depends on what was expected. Getting a pay raise of £5,000 may seem like a loss if you were expecting £10,000. Unrealistic optimists, by expecting a lot, are setting themselves up for large doses of destructive disappointment. These behavioural views of the merits of an optimistic or pessimistic mindset contrast with the perspective of mainstream economics according to which it is best to have realistic beliefs. The point is that to make good decisions, accurate, unbiased information is required.
  3. Spain is taking new measures to cut a spike in coronavirus cases, amid fears of a more widespread "second wave".Catalonia has closed its nightlife for two weeks but cities outside the north-eastern region are also seeing a surge. Norway has similar rules and France has a travel warning.France and Germany have also both seen new cases rise, as nations grapple between staving off fresh outbreaks and reopening economies. The European rises are echoed in far bigger increases across the rest of the globe, with record daily new-infection figures of around 280,000 in both of the past two days. "While no country is unaffected, this rise is driven by high transmission in large and populous countries in the Americas and South Asia," the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement on Saturday. There have been more than 15.7 million cases globally and more than 640,000 deaths,

  5. The world's most powerful production 4-cylinder motor has found its way into the 2nd-generation GLA. How good is it – good enough to justify an estimated R1.1-million asking price? International correspondent Lawrence Allan clambers aboard to give the high-rider a blast.Where once it was a bit of a niche-busting oddity, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 is now an entirely legitimate proposition within the context of the wider premium compact SUV/crossover market. Back in 2014, when the outgoing car was launched, the European SUV boom was – although firmly on the radar – in its relative infancy. Performance SUVs, particularly smaller ones, were a novelty. The GLA 45 went up against the characterful Audi RS Q3 and bar the larger, slightly-pricier Porsche Macan, not much else. Now virtually everybody is churning out a performance version of a small luxury sports utility vehicle... BMW's sporting division has given the M-lite treatment to the X2, Volkswagen has launched the T-Roc R and there are countless others. There's a clear appetite for a category that many enthusiasts continue to sneer at today.
  6. A group of Carabinieri military police have been arrested and their police station closed after investigators uncovered a raft of alleged crimes taking place in the barracks. The Carabinieri in the northern city of Piacenza are suspected of drug-trafficking, blackmail and torture. The case has shocked prosecutors and residents in the northern Italian city."We are untouchable," one of the suspects is alleged to have told a colleague on a police wiretap.Accounts of the team's exploits were front-page news in Italy on Thursday, and local prosecutor Grazia Pradella said "nothing that went on in that barracks was legal - they were out-and-out criminals".The allegations read like the pages of a crime novel, and many of the offences took place in the weeks when Italy went into pandemic lockdown, even though the police operation began in 2017.According to one wiretap, one member of the corps was heard saying they would never be caught. "I've made a criminal gang, guys! In short, we've built a pyramid. We stand on top - me you and him - we're untouchable ok?"The prosecutor said Carabinieri in the Levante barracks were suspected of drug dealing, receiving stolen property, extortion, illegal arrest, embezzlement and abuse of office. While 12 people were under investigation, five people were detained and a sixth placed under house arrest. The military prosecutor in Verona, who has jurisdiction in the case, said he had opened an investigation and was working in close contact with his colleagues in the civil judiciary. The revelations risked tarnishing the image of 110,000 men and women who did their best every day to uphold the values of the military police force, Italy's defence minister said. However, reports also emerged of a young Carabiniere who refused to join in the beatings, drugs and other alleged illegal activities. The most recent arrival at the barracks, identified in Italian reports as having the initials RB, was recorded complaining to his father about what was going on. According to Italian media, his father told him to move to a department where he would feel more comfortable

  8. BMW SA has an illustrious history with its specials and unique models. Now it plans a limited-edition 3-Series to pay tribute to one of its most iconic models, the 325iS. BMW and South Africa have a unique relationship. Our market has been privy to some special-edition vehicles over the years, with the most iconic arguably being the 325iS. The 325iS was built specifically with the intention of circuit racing in the 80s and 90s. The 325iS and 333i which came before it were loved and trying to find one is near impossible these days. The Gusheshe (as the 325iS is locally known) is an integral part of SA motoring history and word has it, Gusheshe 2.0 is on the way.BMW South Africa is well aware of the prestige and reputation of the 325iS and will be launching a limited-run 3-Series to celebrate this motoring icon. The new BMW 330is made a surprise appearance at the 2019BMW M Fest and since then there's been very little word as to its planned arrival or what would make it special. What do we know so far? Well, we know this special edition is based on a new-generation G20 BMW 330i and it will feature the M Sport cosmetic package and potentially a few hand-picked M Performance Parts too. The BMW 330is rides on 20-inch 794M M Performance wheels, which we think are gorgeous. We suspect there'll be no changes to the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder motor which currently produces a 190 kW and 400 Nm. Acceleration is rated at 5.8 seconds to 100 kph. Whether a standard 330i with some nice body parts and wheels will be enough to conjure up the emotions that a 325iS delivers will have to be seen, let's hope BMW SA has got the sentiment right or this could be a bit of a flop. When is it hitting the showroom floors? A source close to BMW SA suggested there would be news regarding the BMW 330is in the next few weeks and the local arm's website now features a page where potential customers can stay updated. From what we understand, there will be a production run of just 300 units of the BMW 330is edition.
  9. President Donald Trump says his administration will send "a surge" of federal agents to US cities in an anti-crime crackdown, Operation Legend.Speaking from the White House, Mr Trump said he had "no choice" but to deploy hundreds of federal agents to Chicago. The Republican is also sending federal officers to two other Democratic-run cities, Albuquerque and Kansas City.Federal officers are already in Portland, Oregon, where the mayor says they are making ongoing protests worse.US Attorney General William Barr, who joined Mr Trump at Wednesday's announcement, said they had sent about 200 federal agents to Kansas City, Missouri, would send a "comparable" number to Chicago, and about 35 others to Albuquerque, New Mexico.President Trump is adopting a law-and-order posture as he faces a tough re-election campaign in November. There have been protests - sometimes descending into civil disorder - in scores of US cities since May, following the death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Meanwhile, gun violence has spiked in cities including New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago and Milwaukee. On Tuesday night, federal agents fired tear gas, pepper balls and flashbangs at demonstrators in central Portland, which has seen 54 consecutive night of protests.

  12. Last week, two close friends officially postponed weddings planned for later in the year. “I know this is overdue,” wrote one in a text to me and the other bridesmaids, “but it’s given me a pit in my stomach every time I go to hit send.” Then she sent a digital version of her “Change the Date”, a replacement for the Save the Date notecard stuck to my refrigerator. For the first half of the year, the uncertainty of the pandemic’s spread has made it nearly impossible to predict whether anything will happen as we imagined it would. “I think we’re all being made keenly aware that the control we thought we had is maybe more fragile than we believed,” says Shevaun Neupert, a professor of psychology at North Carolina State University. But putting the future into a perpetual holding pattern is tough on mental health. Studies have shown strong ties between an unclear future and anxiety, and intolerance of uncertainty has been shown to correlate strongly with depression. We’re the only species that spends this much brain power planning ahead – Shevaun NeupertThat’s why, according to a recent study Neupert co-authored, it’s important to keep making plans – even if they turn out to be futile. Doing so can help you stay in a positive mindset and keep you from being overwhelmed by stress. After all, planning’s in our nature. “As humans, we’re uniquely capable of thinking about the future,” explains Neupert. “We’re the only species that spends this much brain power planning ahead.” Planning as a coping mechanism Scheduling things can help thwart stress before it happens through a cognitive process called ‘proactive coping’. “It has behavioural components and thinking components,” says Neupert. “A behavioural example is like starting an emergency fund. The thinking component is making plans.” In her study, Neupert tracked more than 200 participants over nine days, monitoring the way they navigated daily stress. Those who engaged in proactive coping – meaning their thinking was future oriented, and they anticipated and made plans for how to handle potential hardships – were less reactive to stress. The study only lasted a little more than a week, but Neupert says the principles of her findings can apply to much lengthier periods of stress. “Planning can be a powerful form of proactive coping,” she explains. Scheduling future events is an acknowledgement that there will be a future and that when it arrives, you’ll be able to do the things you want to do. Neupert suggests choosing things “that feel like a return to yourself”. That might mean scheduling a haircut or manicure, for example, for a random day a month or two out, even if you’re not sure you’ll be able to keep the appointment. “These can be very personalised planning experiences,” she says. “Going to the salon, or even just planning to go to the salon, is very much self-care.”

  14. CDC’s coronavirus quarantine order is first in more than 50 years From CNN Health’s Jamie Gumbrecht, Michael Nedelman and Jen Christensen The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s mandatory 14-day quarantine for nearly 200 Americans who returned from Wuhan, China, is the first such order in more than 50 years. The 195 Americans, many of them diplomats and their families, flew from Wuhan to California on Wednesday. They’ve been staying at March Air Reserve Base since then under a three-day voluntary quarantine. “We believe that this approach of having a quarantine for the incubation period offers the greatest level of protection for the American public in preventing introduction and spread,” Cetron said. “That is our primary concern.” CDC officials thanked quarantined individuals for their flexibility. Cetron said most of the passengers were “exuberant and elated to be out of harm’s way” during their journey from Wuhan, and they understand the need for a longer quarantine. Cetron noted there are cons to quarantine – if they aren’t done properly, if there’s fear and stigma or if people aren’t treated with respect. “We’re taking every measure possible to ensure these people are treated with dignity and respect,” Cetron said. One quarantined individual had previously tried to leave the base. CDC officials declined to offer more information about that person. There are currently six confirmed cases of Wuhan coronavirus in the US – one in Arizona, two in California, two in Illinois and one in Washington. Some historical context: A quarantine order like this was last used in the 1960s for smallpox evaluation, Dr. Marti Cetron, director of CDC’s Division of Global Migration and Quarantine, said Friday during a telebriefing with reporters.

  17. Novak Djokovic cries as he pays tribute to Kobe Bryant at the Australian Open. Djokovic, the defending champion who next faces Roger Federer in the semifinals, also posted a heartfelt tribute to the NBA great on social media earlier this week. He signed a TV camera lens with the names of Bryant of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna as he left the court. Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios also paid tribute to Bryant during their fourth-round match Monday. Kyrgios, a huge basketball fan, wore a Lakers jersey during his warmup and in the post-match press conference, while Nadal hailed him as "one of the greatest sportsmen in history."
  18. ommuters arriving in Hong Kong wear facemasks as they pass the cross boundary restricted area inside the high-speed train station connecting Hong Kong to mainland China. Anthony Wallace/AFP/Getty Images A trade union representing medical workers in Hong Kong is demanding the government shut down its border with China to prevent the spread of Wuhan coronavirus. In a statement, the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance said while it agrees with the measures announced by Chief Executive Carrie Lam, it demands a refusal of all entries to Hong Kong via China. The group also called for the government to publish numbers of passenger flows entering Hong Kong via China. The trade union, which says it represents 6,000 medical workers in Hong Kong, is threatening to strike if the government does not shut its border with China to prevent the spread of the virus. What Lam said earlier: Lam on Tuesday said that the government will "temporarily" close some of its borders with mainland China and travel permits to mainland Chinese tourists will stop being issued.
