  5. Plaintiff allegedly falsified and fabricated evidence UPDATE 8/24: Never mind -- the judge in the case has denied GM's motion to dismiss the case. Reuters reports one of the many lawsuits General Motors faces over its faulty ignition switches likely will be thrown out of a Texas courtroom. The case involves plaintiff Zachary Stevens, who lost control of his 2007 Saturn Sky in 2011 before hitting another car and killing its driver. In a strange twist, the case may be dismissed because the key in the vehicle at the time of the accident didn't actually belong to a Saturn Sky. The allegedly non-Saturn key also had various trinkets hanging off of it, which are now thought have been added to help convince jurors that the problem was a run-of-the-mill GM ignition switch failure caused by excessive weight. Stevens must have forgotten that he originally said he didn’t have much attached to his key at the time the accident occurred. GM challenged the plaintiffs for fabricating evidence and asked the judge to dismiss the case. A dismissal will likely only mean that Stevens won’t get to cash a big check; manslaughter charges were dropped after GM announced the recall in 2014. According to Reuters, so far GM has already paid out around $2 billion in settlements and penalties because of faulty ignition switches.
  6. South Korean tech giant Samsung has permanently ceased production of its high-end Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after reports of devices it had deemed safe catching fire. The firm had already reduced Galaxy Note 7 production volumes. Owners are expected to be able to return the phones for a refund or an exchange for a different Samsung phone. The firm had earlier said it would stop sales of the phone. "We recently readjusted the production volume for thorough investigation and quality control, but putting consumer safety as top priority, we have reached a final decision to halt production of Galaxy Note 7s," the company said. "For the benefit of consumers' safety, we stopped sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 and have consequently decided to stop production." Earlier, consumer tech analyst Caroline Milanesi of Creative Strategies told the BBC that Samsung should "call it a day" on production of the Galaxy Note 7 to limit long-term risk to the brand. However, South Korea's finance minister had warned that the country's exports would be hurt if the phone model was scrapped. Smoke emissions In September, Samsung recalled around 2.5 million phones after complaints of exploding batteries. It later insisted that all replaced devices were safe. However, that was followed by reports that those phones were catching fire too. A Kentucky man said he woke up to a bedroom full of smoke from a replaced Note 7, days after a domestic flight in the US was evacuated after a new device started emitting smoke in the cabin. Even as late as Monday evening, a spokeswoman insisted the phones were safe to use. But on Tuesday, the company said it would stop Galaxy Note 7 production. Authorities in the US and South Korea are investigating why even the replacement Note 7 phones that Samsung equipped with a safer battery reportedly caught fire. An official at the South Korean safety agency said the replacement phones might have a defect that was different from the problem with the original Galaxy Note 7s. 'Brand damage' Samsung could suffer "a considerable loss of consumer faith," said Greg Roh at HMC Investment Securities. "If it's once, it could be taken as a mistake. But for Samsung, the same thing happened twice with the same model," he said. "The reason consumers prefer brands like Samsung and Apple is because of product reliability. So in this case, brand damage is inevitable and it will be costly for Samsung to turn that around again." At least five fires were reported in replacement devices in the US. Samsung said it had sold about 45,000 Note 7s through pre-orders in Europe. The handset was never released for sale in the UK. Analysts are suggesting the recall and now scrapping of the Note 7 could cost Samsung in the long run, particularly coming just as rivals including Google and Apple have announced new high-end smartphones. Richard Windsor, from Edison Investment Research, said: "As a result of making a complete mess of the Galaxy Note 7 recall, Samsung is more likely to lose a large number of high-end users to other Android handsets rather than to Apple. "The real issue is brand and reputation. As long as Samsung carried out the recall smoothly and kept users very happy, the issue would eventually blow over. "Unfortunately, this is very far from the case, and the fact that Samsung appeared to still be shipping defective devices could trigger a large loss of faith in Samsung products." 7. Spare a thought for our ancient ancestors. In medieval times, bathing was seen as a form of sexual debauchery, rather than something you just do to avoid alienating yourself from the rest of society. It's fair to say that's one hell of a stigma attached to something we see as routine . Giving yourself a regular hose down is a relatively recent phenomenon, but one which perhaps ties in with our obsession with cleanliness. For example, skipping a bath or shower is the sort of thing you probably only do under extreme circumstances. But what's the worst that could happen if you skip the shower for, say, two days? A bit of dirt never hurt anybody, right? Wrong. While nothing life-threatening will happen to you, you run the risk of being scratched from several Christmas card lists. 8. Each forthcoming car, truck, and SUV is an as-yet-unrealized promise, but none emerges wholly from the ether. Clean sheets of paper are found at Staples not car companies, whose planners juggle plants, partnerships, powertrains, and platforms to feed global sales channels. This guarantees a high likelihood of product success, but often also a bland if competent uniformity. So, when something reaches off the page and slaps you in the face, when a just-launched online configurator has you rushing to check your bank balance—that’s amazing. We are celebrating that here. These are the vehicles that make news each time they shed a bit of camo or whenever a jet-lagged executive reveals a detail about a redesigned wiper stalk. Mere rumors of their existence accelerate competitors’ product cycles. The wait to drive them—one, two, sometimes even three years—is rewarded with hoped-for revelations in advanced technology, structural integrity, mass reduction, fuel economy, features, and acceleration. Fun, too. Curating this stream of information is nearly as fraught as managing the billions it takes to develop a new model. We beg and borrow insights from around the business, tap sources, and hold our bladders until after the wine glasses have been cleared from the dinner table before asking questions. This year we are even ranking them, counting down to the one that’s most worth waiting for. Let’s do this.
  9. New images show the extent of devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, with one town virtually wiped out and at least 23 people dead. The death toll is expected to rise amid concern over an area in the south-west which remains largely cut off. Images from one of the towns, Jeremie, show hundreds of flattened houses. The hurricane has gone back up to a Category Four storm, the second highest hurricane classification, as it heads for the US state of Florida. Hurricane Matthew in pictures Hurricane prompts mass exodus Haitians describe hurricane ordeal Eyewitness: 'My neighbour's house was destroyed' Hurricane Matthew is currently pounding the Bahamas, after slicing through Haiti and Cuba. It is the most powerful Caribbean storm in nearly a decade. Haiti's civil protection service has confirmed 23 fatalities, but Reuters news agency, quoting local officials, put the death toll at the much higher figure of 98. The south-western town of Jeremie was "pretty much wiped out from the seaboard all the way to the cathedral", a radio host in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince told the BBC on Thursday. He said the town had been virtually cut off from the rest of the world because of broken down communications since the hurricane. "The devastation that we are seeing is horrible...The town is really in dire straits and it's very, very bad down there." A presidential election due this weekend in Haiti has been postponed because of the hurricane, which has left destruction across the Caribbean region. Four people were also killed in the neighbouring Dominican Republic. It has intensified as it moves towards the US state of Florida, where US residents have been warned to prepare for a "direct hit". Florida Governor Rick Scott said his state could be facing its biggest evacuation ever. Matthew battered Haiti with winds of up to 230km/h (145mph) on Tuesday. The country is one of the world's poorest, with many residents living in flimsy housing in flood-prone areas. Map showing the south-western town of Jeremie in Haiti One official for aid agency Oxfam told the BBC that more than 10,000 people had been displaced in the south alone. Officials are concerned about the full extent of the damage in the Grand Anse area on the southern tip of the island - where Jeremie lies - which was directly in the storm's path. A key bridge has been destroyed, roads are impassable and phone communications have gone down. Among the damaged buildings were schools and churches due to be used as polling stations in Haiti's election. A new date for the much-delayed vote has not yet been announced. At the scene: Tony Brown, BBC News, Haiti flood We only began to see the real destructive force of Hurricane Matthew once we moved towards the south-west of the country. Trees fallen, banana crops uprooted and flattened, houses under water and men and women trying to get the debris out of the way. It was noticeable how the people we passed were coping alone. There were no army or police around to help. Even the aid agencies are struggling to move around this damaged corner of the country. Read more A man carries a woman across a river at Petit Goave where a bridge collapsed during the rains of Hurricane Matthew, south-west of Port-au-Prince, 5 OctoberImage copyrightAFP Image caption Parts of southern Haiti have suffered severe flooding Why Haiti is vulnerable to disasters Hurricane Matthew has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, but nowhere has the devastation been more severe than in Haiti. The poorest country in the Americas, Haiti has long been particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. Six years after an earthquake killed more than 200,000 people and displaced 1.5 million, tens of thousands of quake victims still live in temporary shelters. More than half of Haiti's city-dwellers live in overcrowded shantytowns that take the full force of any earthquake, hurricane, or disease outbreak. An ongoing cholera epidemic, triggered by the arrival of UN troops after the 2010 quake, has killed thousands of people. Massive deforestation has also led to soil erosion, leaving hillside huts and poorly-built houses in the capital, Port-au-Prince, dangerously exposed. The consequence in rural areas, where many depend on small plots of land for their food, is that topsoil is often washed away. Political instability and corruption have been a factor. Without effective government for decades, Haiti currently ranks 163rd out of the 188 countries on the UN Human Development Index. It spends little on storm defences. 13. The Trump campaign has acknowledged in a statement that President Obama was born in the US. The Republican candidate had been a leader of the "birther" movement that questioned Hawaii-born Mr Obama's citizenship. But his campaign now accuses his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton of introducing the "smear" during the 2008 Democratic nomination contest. There is no evidence to link Mrs Clinton to the birthers. In reaction she tweeted that President Obama's successor "cannot and will not be the man who led the racist birther movement". Does it matter where a country's leader is born? The BBC's North America Reporter Anthony Zurcher says the statement signed by senior Trump advisor Jason Miller is far from an admission of error. Instead, he says, Mr Miller laid the genesis of the birther rumours wrongfully at the feet of Hillary Clinton and her 2008 presidential campaign team. When they raised questions, Mr Miller said, it was "vicious and conniving" behaviour. By broaching the topic three years later, Mr Trump had done a "great service" to the public and president, Mr Miller said. The statement follows an interview with the Washington Post newspaper in which Mr Trump had declined to say Mr Obama had been born in the US, saying instead that he did not want to answer the question. What is the origin of the 'birther' claim? Barack ObamaImage copyrightAP The claim is a conspiracy theory that Mr Obama was actually born in Kenya and is therefore ineligible to be president. Reports in various US publications suggest it was circulated in 2008 by die-hard supporters of Mrs Clinton as it became clear that she was not going to win the Democratic nomination. However there is no evidence that Mrs Clinton or her then campaign had anything to do with it. The claim enjoyed a revival with some supporters of Republican candidate John McCain as he fell behind Mr Obama in polls, the Fact Check website reported. When did Mr Trump get involved? A tweet reads: Image copyright@REALDONALDTRUMP The billionaire became a vocal questioner of Mr Obama's citizenship as he was running for a second term as president. In April 2011, Mr Trump challenged Mr Obama to show his birth certificate, gaining approval from Republicans including former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Weeks later Mr Obama released his actual birth certificate from his native state of Hawaii. At that year's White House correspondents dinner, Mr Obama made light of the allegations, mocking Donald Trump. The 2012 Republican candidate Mitt Romney referred to the discredited theory at a campaign rally in August that year, joking that no-one had asked to see his birth certificate - drawing swift condemnation from the Obama campaign. Why has the Trump campaign now distanced itself? - by Anthony Zurcher, BBC North America reporter The words haven't been spoken by Donald Trump yet, but a press release from his campaign represents the closest we've come to the Republican nominee formally acknowledging that President Barack Obama was born on US soil. Mr Trump's turn as the lead advocate of the so-called "birther" movement has been a drag on the Republican's standings among black voters. It was also the issue that rocketed the New Yorker to fame among many conservatives, however. There's little surprise, then, that Trump team wants to settle the matter and shift the campaign back to more favourable terrain - but the candidate has yet to back down completely. What is the latest on the campaign? Mr Trump's doctor has said he is in excellent physical health, although Mr Trump said he was slightly overweight. 14. The Romanian culture is rich in complexity culture and traditions. The distinctive culture of Romania is a result of its historical evolution. The culture has been imbibed from the Dacians, who had occupied the area in the past. One way in which the people of Romania showcase their brightly coloured ornaments and costumes is during the traditional dance during the major festivals. Beautiful traditional woven carpets, wood hand carvings, pottery and clothing are just some of the elements of traditional Romanian culture. Intricately decorated Easter eggs, painted glass and Icons painted on wood substrates art are among the special folk arts of Romania. These items can also be found in many shops, street markets and vendors near tourist attractions throughout the country. The Romanian language is Latin based and has certain resemblance to Spanish, French and Italian languages . In the bigger towns and cities people can easily converse in English, while many also speak French, particularly the older generation from their Communist schooling days. Russian is also widely understood by the older generation for the same reason. The four seasons of Romania, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn are not usually in equal proportion. Summer and Winter are much more dominant than Spring and Autumn. For this reason, many say it is a 2 season climate. Romanian cuisine is influenced by the palates of the many foreign settlers who had travelled or occupied the land in the past. Such settlers include the Turks, Greeks, Hungarians, Austrians as well as the Germans. Pork is a favorite dish of most Romanians but there is also a variety of other meat products like beef, lamb and chicken dishes that are readily available. Fish dishes are typical of the Danube Delta. Generally meals are complemented by both bread and soup, or Ciorba, which is a national specialty in Romania. Some Romanians consider their meal to be incomplete without a drink of the local spirit, tuica, a plum brandy is usually enjoyed before a meal along with some appetizers. Romania is blessed with excellent wine and beer. During special occasions a variety of delicious cakes is a po[CENSORED]r necessity in Romania. A few such local dishes of Romania include: Ciorba, Mititei (also known as Mici , Tochitura, Mamaliga. The local transport of Romania is surprisingly well structured and affordable, offering a number of options. Travellers can choose to use the train, or which there are several main types: Personal (p), Accelerat (a), Rapid (r), Intercity (ic), Euro City (ec) , as well as a very competitive private train services such as Regiotrans. Also, there is an extensive network of buses, minivans, cheap taxis and in major cities, trams and an underground Metro system in the capital. Though the Romanian culture and lifestyle shares some similarities with other east European countries, it is largely unique and an enriching experience. Romanians are warm, intelligence & passionate people. Street, violent and car crime is barely visible in everyday society and is nowhere near as significant as western Europe and few cities pose problems for walking late at night. Whilst one should always take basic precautions, you are unlikely to encounter any sense of feeling unsafe in po[CENSORED]ted areas, partly because Romanian society is still a strong and cohesive community force with deep family & faith values. Confidence-tricksters posing as officials in major cities are not unheard of, although extremely rare while unregistered taxi drivers overcharging foreign travellers are to be expected, Only use recommended taxi companies that any experienced local will be able to recommend. With Google map website now carrying ratings for companies now for example, this is much easier for travellers to determine.
  15. Among the foundational differences between modern Homo sapiens and the less advantaged beasts of the world is the ability, however infrequently employed, to delay our gratification for the promise of something better. In exchange for not wielding sweet bone-crushing pincers, we can plan for the future in a way that lobsters find perplexing. This is why we don’t just storm the doctor’s office for our drugs. No, we wait, mostly patiently, listening to Burt Bacharach and leafing through a copy of Highlights or a brochure for teeth whitening. Or we glare at DMV employees while shifting uncomfortably on rock-hard surplus schoolhouse chairs. And we hold on to our used-up or otherwise unsatisfying vehicles as carmakers trudge through the process of designing, engineering, testing, and producing the automobiles that hold enough promise to make another year in the Tercel worthwhile. What we have gathered here are promissory notes on the 25 cars that make extended stays in the vehicular waiting room bearable, arranged in order of desirability. 16. The former Romanian prime minister Victor Ponta is being investigated for alleged financial corruption relating to a visit by Tony Blair in 2012. Romanian state prosecutors questioned Ponta on Tuesday about allegations that he misused his authority as leader of the Social Democratic party to persuade Blair to come to Romania. They accuse Ponta of offering Sebastian Ghita, a local businessman, a seat in parliament in exchange for paying €220,000 (£184,000) to cover the costs of a visit by a political figure. Ghita told the Mediafax news agency that this figure was Blair. Prosecutors said Ponta arranged the visit so it looked as if it had been initiated and organised by non-political groups, and that he benefited from press coverage of the visit. Blair’s office said it was contacted by the Multimedia Foundation for Local Democracy to make the speech, and that the contact came via an American thinktank, the Centre for American Progress. Blair was paid a substantial fee for giving a lecture on the future of Europe, with the money passed in its entirety to one of his charities. In exchange for sponsoring the visit, Ponta, who was prime minister from 2012 to 2015, allegedly promoted Ghita within the party to help him win a parliamentary seat and a four-year term in the chamber of deputies. Ponta and Ghita both deny wrongdoing. Read more Blair was not under investigation for any wrongdoing, a spokeswoman for the prosecutors said, and there was no suggestion that he was aware of any of the fallout from his visit. Ponta is being investigated on suspicion of using his authority to obtain money, goods or other improper benefits and being an accomplice to money laundering. Prosecutors put Ponta under judicial control – the equivalent of bail – meaning he has to report to prosecutors, needs to get permission to leave the country, cannot talk publicly about the inquiry or make public comments about prosecutors. Ponta is currently on trial in a separate case for corruption-related charges stemming from work he did as a lawyer from 2007 to 2008. He denies wrongdoing. Ponta became prime minister in 2012. 17. The PlayStation 4 has officially shrunk to become the PlayStation 4 Slim. Arrives on September 15 with a price of US $ 299, the same price as the original version currently. This console is basically the same PlayStation 4 that you know and love (or hate?) But 30 percent smaller, according to the measures taken by those who could buy the console before time. That is a significant reduction: the original PS4 has a height of 2 inches, while the Slim has a height of 1.5 inches. We will update these measures when we get the exact specifications. The prices of the new console PlayStation 4 Slim. Besides the difference in size, not much more to say about the PlayStation 4 Slim. Still plays the same game in the same way with the same internal hardware (with some minor functional differences). For example, a report suggests it is a little easier to install the hard drive now, and the DualShock 4 control that has received a slight change can be connected directly to the console through a USB cable to improve response time very intense games. According to these reports, it is already absent an optical audio input on the back of the console, and Slim runs quieter and cool way thanks to an improved cooling system and a fan redesigned. Apart from this, the only differences are cosmetic and small bands that help you find the power button, and another band at the top of the control to capture your attention. The symbols of the PlayStation are present in the lower panel, and USB 3.0 ports have a little apart. However, the PlayStation 4 Slim does not have to represent a major update, because it will replace the current PlayStation 4 in stores.
