  5. If I learned anything from Lena Kaligaris, my favorite character in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, it's that a single trip can majorly change your life. Time and again in my personal experience this has proven true in a tangible way - perhaps most profoundly when it comes to romantic relationships. Travel has a way of bringing out the extremes in people, from the worst parts of their character to the absolute best. For this reason, traveling as a couple can be the ultimate test of a relationship; it helps couples discover the realest aspects of one another. Here are 13 other reasons why traveling as a couple should be a major priority in romantic relationships: If you're traveling somewhere new to both of you, the experience becomes extremely immersive. Sure, you can learn a lot about a boyfriend when he shows you around his hometown, but the true discoveries about his character will come when you're each out of your element! Whether it's a language barrier that you have to tackle together, a missed train in a foreign country, or a declined credit card when you're trying to make your way home, the challenges you'll experience together will be an amazing bonding experience. Long drives in the car, airplane trips, train rides, hikes, and sailing excursions are a wonderful time to have deep discussions. Don't be afraid to ask him about his childhood, [CENSORED]ure goals, or past girlfriends during these moments! Planning trips can be a polarizing experience; for example, you might discover that your boyfriend has a serious love of history museums that doesn't really allow for your desire to explore every used bookstore in the city. When situations like this arise, it's important that you and your significant other find a compromise that pleases both of you. It might mean skipping the museums and bookstores altogether for a riverboat ride, or perhaps mapping out a couple of bookstores to visit on the walk to the museum he's dying to see. Observing your boyfriend as he plans, packs, and saves money for your trip together can give you a major peek into the way he handles important undertakings. If organizing a trip to the Grand Canyon is enough to make him frantic and irritable, how will he handle awedding? There's nothing quite like the realization that your boyfriend doesn't allow food in his new car, enjoys tuning in to political talk radio on long stretches of road, and gets terrible indigestion after eating Taco Bell. Ask any flight attendant, and they'll agree: traveling can bring out some people's shocking personality traits. The combination of exhausting jet-setting and culture shock can bring out some deeply hidden character flaws, so pay close attention to how he acts toward waiters, flight attendants, hotel guest service representatives, and other service personnel during your time on the road together. You may have visited Tahiti with your ex, but the disastrous breakup definitely spoiled that memory. Traveling with your new significant other is a great way to leave negative experiences in the past and create new memories. If things are serious with your partner, traveling can be a wonderful way to practice the type of financial cooperation that is necessary for marriage and/or cohabitation. Setting a budget and sticking to it can be quite tough, so let this trip be a practice run for your life together! It can be easy to get into a regular routine with your significant other, whether it's grabbing takeout every Wednesday or deciding on a Netflix movie every night. This has its benefits, but it's always healthy to break out of such routines every so often! Let travel be the game-changer, allowing you both a break from the everyday monotony that can become stifling at home. Did you know that your boyfriend speaks conversational Mandarin, or that he is well-versed in Thai folklore? These are the types of fun discoveries that can happen while abroad with your partner, and make traveling that much more exciting. You and your significant other may find that travel is something you deeply enjoy and that you want to do more of it together. If that's the case, it is important to discuss life decisions that may hinder your travel goals, such as having kids or adopting a fourth cat. As awesome is traveling with a companion can be, it also has the potential to drive you crazy. You and your significant other may find yourselves griping during the trip, but you can use it as practice in problem-solving, communication, apologizing, and giving personal space! The very best part of traveling with your partner is, of course, the incredible amounts of fun that you can have together. Seeing the world as a couple is an indescribable experience that can bond you unlike anything else, which is one of the most important reasons for you to travel with your significant other.

  6. "Although the size of our sample was small, the effects and results we found were still profound," said study first author Robert Restaino, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Mo. The findings were published recently in the journal Experimental Physiology. "The obvious take-home is that uninterrupted sitting and inactivity leads to microvascular dysfunction, and therefore is unhealthy," said Dr. William Gray, director of endovascular services at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center, in New York City. Gray noted that sitting for a long time has previously been linked to heart disease. Restaino said the goal of his study was to "tease apart the impairments elicited by prolonged sitting." To isolate the effects of lengthy stretches of sitting, Restaino and his colleagues had 11 young men engage in some "acute sitting" for six hours. The researchers measured the men's blood flow and a couple of other heart factors both before the sitting session and afterward. To keep food from affecting the results, all of the men ate the same breakfast -- a quesadilla with pineapple juice -- two hours before their sitting episode. They had another meal four hours into the sitting. The study participants were not supposed to move their legs while they sat, and they were seated so their legs hung above the floor. They were allowed to read or use a computer. Once their six-hour sitting ended and blood flow and other measurements were completed, the men each took a 10-minute walk. Then, the investigators again performed all of the same measurements. The researchers found that sitting was bad. It reduced blood flow in two major leg arteries and the men's calves swelled by almost an inch, on average. After the stroll -- which, based on step counters, was about 1,100 steps in 10 minutes -- blood flow and other measures returned to pre-sitting levels, the findings showed. Noting that this group of 11 men represented "healthy individuals," Restaino said that in other groups of people, such as the elderly or those with previous heart problems, "I would imagine the impairments would be more exaggerated." For people who are less healthy, he added, the ability of blood flow and other measures to rebound to normal might require longer, more intense exercise. But "this is purely speculative" for now, Restaino said. Gray said: "We know that [blood flow] dysfunction is associated with worse cardiovascular [heart] outcomes in the elderly. But we don't know if age or duration of the activity required would affect the magnitude of the effects seen here." Gray said the small size of the study was "OK" because the authors measured objective endpoints and found big differences with walking. How long the effects of a short walk will last is unclear. The direct effect of exercise, according to Gray, appears to be increased levels of nitric oxide, a molecule that triggers blood vessels to open up. That reduces friction on the blood and allows it to flow more easily. Restaino said another factor is likely the contraction of the muscles that happens while walking, which helps boost circulation. The bottom line, said Restaino, is that "cumulatively, these effects of a short walk are all playing important roles in improving impairments seen during a prolonged bout of sitting." 7. It turns out eating carrots is really good for your eye Pigments called carotenoids, which give vegetables such as carrots, peppers and spinach their colours, can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), researchers claim. The condition, which is one of the most common causes of vision loss in older people, affects 600,000 people in the UK. The Harvard University-led study used data from a survey that tracked more than 100,000 over-50s for 25 years. RELATED ARTICLES It found that those who consumed the highest levels of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing the advanced form of the condition than those who ingested the least. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in high concentrations in the macula, part of the inner eye. They are known as the macular pigment. The pigment protects the macula by preventing cell damage and filtering out damaging blue light. Good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin are dark, leafy vegetables and eggs. Carrots can can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneratio (AMD) The condition, AMD, affects 600,000 people in the UK. Eating healthy with lots of green leafy vegetables can help reduce risk Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society The study also found that those who consumed the highest levels of some of the other forms of carotenoids – alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin – had a 25 per cent to 35 per cent lower risk of advanced AMD. Carrots and sweet potato are good sources of alpha and beta-carotene, while beta-cryptoxanthin is found in oranges and peaches. The researchers did not find any link between carotenoids and the intermediate form of AMD, However, they concluded in the journal JAMA Opthalmology: “This study suggests that carotenoids may slow worsening of AMD once it occurs.” As of now, there is still no cure for AMD AMD causes the loss of central vision, usually in both eyes. According to experts at NHS Choices the sight loss usually happens gradually over time, although it can sometimes be rapid. Reading becomes difficult, colours appear less vibrant and people’s faces are difficult to recognise. There is currently no cure for AMD. It does not affect peripheral, or side, vision, which means it will not cause complete blindness. Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “Eating healthy with lots of green leafy vegetables can help reduce risk.”
  8. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed Saturday that he is prepared to wage war against the United States if necessary, using as a backdrop a massive display of firepower in the form of troop columns, missile launchers, tanks and other military hardware during a choreographed parade in the capital of Pyongyang. "Our military force is ready to respond to any kind of war the American imperialists want," Kim said in his speech marking the 70th anniversary of party rule, according to the Associated Press. The heavily rehearsed event played out in the city's central Kim Il Sung Square, named after Kim's grandfather and founding leader of the North Korean state. Tens of thousands of onlookers rhythmically waved pink and red artificial flowers as throngs of goose-stepping soldiers paraded and Kim, wearing his signature dark Maoist suit, saluted as he overlooked the spectacle. Military aircraft flew in a formation overhead spelling out the hammer, brush and sickle symbol of North Korea and the number 70. Amid the tanks, drones and armored vehicles in the parade, were what appeared to be North Korea's first intercontinental ballistic missile, the KN-08, carried on a 16-wheeled vehicle, according to media reports. While North Korea has nuclear weapons, it remains unclear whether its scientists have developed a means of delivering the bombs on long-range missiles. After the show of military might, the 30-something leader delivered 25 minutes of tough-worded remarks reiterating the United States as North Korea's chief adversary. “Through the line of Songun (military-first) politics, our Korean People’s Army has become the strongest revolutionary force and our country has become an impenetrable fortress and a global military power,” he said, according to AP. Standing beside Kim was a visiting dignitary from the isolated nation's primary ally and trade partner, China. Liu Yunshan, a fifth-ranked member of Chinese Communist Party, arrived with a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping urging the continuation of close ties between the countries. In this image made from video, North Korean military vehicles parade at the Kim Il Sung Square during the ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the country's ruling party in Pyongyang. (Photo: AP) I But Liu has also urged during his visit that North Korea resume six-party talks that are aimed at pushing Pyongyang to abandon nuclear weapons in exchange for economic assistance, according to Xinhua, the official Chinese-run news agency. The negotiations would also involve the United States. North Korea uncharacteristically invited large numbers of foreign media and delegations to Pyongyang for the showy 70th celebration. Satellite imagery during large-scale rehearsals for the parade captured troops marching through a mock-up of the Kim Il Sung Square, according to AP. Large crowds of civilians had also been practicing their roles.
  9. A Chinese woman nicknamed the "Queen of Ivory" has been arrested in Tanzania and charged with smuggling at least 706 elephant tusks that authorities say are worth about $2.5 million. Yang Feng Glan, 66, is thought to be the most notorious ivory trafficker arrested in East Africa in the last decade. She ran a sophisticated supply chain between East Africa and China for about 10 years, Tanzanian authorities say. Many of her suppliers were also arrested. "Across Africa, they keep arresting small fish here and there," said Andrea Costa, a spokesman for the Elephant Action League, a nonprofit group that fights crime against wildlife. "They have finally caught a big fish." Yang Feng Glan Glan is thought to have come to Tanzania as a Swahili-Chinese translator in 1975, when China began to build a railway in the East African nation, according to Elephant Action League. Tanzanian law enforcement says she began trafficking ivory as far back as 2006. Described as "extremely wealthy and extremely connected" in China and Tanzania, Glan owned businesses, including a large restaurant, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, and she was even serving as the secretary general of the Tanzania-China Africa Business Council. A source close to the investigation told CNN that Glan was under surveillance when, on September 28, an elite police task force swooped in on her in Dar es Salaam. After a brief car chase, she was apprehended. She appeared before Tanzania's High Court on Thursday and was denied bail. This counts as a major success for Tanzania, which is referred to by some as ground zero of elephant poaching in Africa. The East African nation has lost almost two-thirds of its elephants in the last decade, the Environmental Investigation Agency, a UK-based nongovernmental organization, said in a report last year. The arrest was carried out through a new specialized wildlife trafficking unit, part of a larger task force on serious crimes known as the Tanzanian National and Transnational Serious Crimes Investigation Unit. Sources say the unit has arrested at least one wildlife trafficker per day since its inception. Government spokesman Assah Mwambene says the government, through the elite unit, has "stepped up Tanzania's war on poaching." Many say the issue is with demand, and China has long been cast as the source of the problem as the largest ivory importer in the world. "The elephant species is in the hands of the Chinese President," Costa said. "Once the President decides to close down the legal market of ivory and elephant in China, the poaching of elephants will end." The Chinese government has recently made strides to reduce the ivory trade in the country. In September, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama made history by announcing that the two countries would protect elephants from the poaching crisis with nearly complete bans on ivory imports and exports, promising "significant and timely steps to halt the domestic commercial trade of ivory."
  10. For several years we have watched the Mediterranean Sea become a huge human cemetery as desperate people fleeing from Syria and Africa crowd onto rickety boats and drown by the hundreds within sight of the Italian coast. We think, “How terrible!” Then we read the next news story. Now there is a new swell of arrivals on the Greek island of Lesbos. People on unsafe boats are crossing from Turkey by the thousands and huddle on a small beach totally unequipped to receive them. Again we read, we watch on our screens and we think. “Poor people!” And we move on and go on with our lives. Then one day a picture that appears in all the papers and on all our screens hits home. Aylan Kurdi is 3 years old. He is lying face down on a Turkish beach, his head in the water. He is from Kobani. Someone had lovingly dressed him in a red T-shirt and navy shorts. We know he will never get up and run in the sand. We know he will never reach safety on the other shore. The people who arrive on Lesbos have an itinerary and destinations. They have researched the best routes and methods and shared information and advice using social media. They have hired guides and smugglers and paid them well to take them across to Greece, their entry point into Europe. Greece, which has its own problems and is the weakest link in the European Union, suddenly finds itself overrun and having to “process” thousands of fleeing people. But that is only the beginning of the nightmare for the refugees. They have to rush across Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary where they face various walls, barriers and hostility on the part of the locals. Hungary is blocking them with fences topped with razor wire strands. Many families get separated. Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia are barricading themselves against these hordes of aliens forgetting what they themselves had to endure when they were occupied by the Soviet Union. Misfortune has not taught them compassion. In Hungary people are crowded into pen-like enclosures, food being thrown at them as though they were animals. Elsewhere they face hostile police with tear gas and water cannons. Did the Hungarians forget that Austria opened its borders to them when they were fleeing from Russian tanks rolling through Budapest in 1956? Hungary may be the main villain here but the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Estonia are similarly hostile. In Bratislava (Slovakia) they proclaim loudly that they will only accept a few hundred Christian Syrians. They want no Muslims; they have no mosques, they say. Many are afraid of Jihadist infiltration. There is definitely an Old Europe/New Europe schism operating here. Most of the newly accepted countries have right-wing regimes, hostile to immigration. Germany, Austria, Sweden, old, established democracies, have shown empathy and understanding. In Germany, with an aging po[CENSORED]tion, young workers are needed. But there is also some residual guilt about Hitler’s crimes. Most of the refugees are heading for these countries which have extended a welcome to them. But no one really expected this melting glacier of refugees sliding inexorably across Europe. Cracks, fissures and splinters are appearing everywhere and the whole threatens to break apart. The Schengen Agreement providing free circulation across European borders has already given way. Chancellor Merkel has been in the forefront of the humanitarian effort, saying refugees are entitled to asylum. The German po[CENSORED]tion as a whole is sympathetic and there are many volunteers spontaneously offering help, but it may have unwittingly created this onslaught of arrivals that threatens the whole continent. Denmark and Norway are dissuading people from coming. France, Britain and Italy are reluctantly offering some hospitality. Recently the scale of the refugee crisis has reached catastrophic proportions.Water, food and sanitation problems are worsening. The UN humanitarian agencies are on the verge of bankruptcy Even Germany had to institute border controls along all its frontiers. Europe has lost control of this tsunami of gigantic proportions. There has been no solidarity, no sharing of the burden, and moral responsibility has been sadly lacking. But what about the rest of us? This is not only a a European problem. There have been more than 7 million Syrian refugees displaced so far. In Turkey, which is their first destination, many live in refugee camps. Others are in Lebanon, which faces its own problems and has no functioning government. Jordan already has a huge number of Palestinian refugees . None have been integrated or resettled. The Gulf countries, except for the United Arab Emirates have accepted no Syrians. Some Latin American countries have taken in a modest number. But where is the United States in all of this? Where is the Lady on the pedestal? Has she closed the golden door to the tired and the poor? Has she extinguished the lamp that guided the homeless and the tempest-tossed? We are vacillating. Some of us say it is not our problem. Others think there might be terrorists among the refugees. As a result we are piously proclaiming that we will accept a few thousand of them. (And maybe more in 2017.) Are we going to repeat the mistakes of the past when we could not distinguish between the culprits and the victims? When we imprisoned Japanese-Americans because they might be enemy sympathizers? Don’t we remember that we refused entry to Jewish refugees during World War II who then went back to perish in extermination camps? It is time to wake up and acknowledge that this is now a global problem and that we have a common duty to participate. We cannot shirk our responsibility any longer.
  11. Allegations of war crimes are quick to surface when civilians are killed in conflicts, but more often than not, these accusations lead nowhere. Fires burn in part of the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan after it was hit by a U.S. air strike Last Saturday, a U.S. airstrike hit a Doctors Without Borders hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz, killing 22 among staff members and patients. The attack garnered widespread criticism of American tactics in the region and prompted the aid group to call for an independent war crimes investigation against the United States. Until now, Washington has rejected such a move, insisting on a probe by the Pentagon, NATO and Afghanistan. The bombing, only one in many recent incidents of civilians being targeted during military conflicts, is a reminder of the horrifying consequences of modern warfare. However, the attack and its seemingly tepid aftermath also highlight how the “war crimes” accusation – once the most damning indictment of a country’s behavior – now is launched with increasing ease and frequency, only to fall mostly flat when it comes to bringing to justice the alleged perpetrators. While the United Nations and international bodies have had some success in pursuing war crimes charges, those cases don’t seem to act as a deterrent. Since 2009, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges including genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. But Bashir, who rejects the court’s authority, remains free and is largely able to travel thanks to support from African and Arab states. In what is possibly the most notorious recent case, forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad have been accused of war crimes such as the abduction and torture of opposition members, as well as targeting civilian po[CENSORED]tions during the course of the four-year civil war that is ravaging the country. Assad has been accused of using chemical weapons against civilians, leading to a deal that enabled the UN’s chemical weapons watchdog to disarm the regime of all of its known stockpiles of such armaments. Beyond these measures, the international community also seemed determined to bring Assad himself before the ICC - formed in 2002 to aid the prosecution of those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. But despite what UN officials and Western leaders claim is overwhelming evidence of Assad’s wrongdoing, he continues to act freely, with allies China and Russia vetoing a 2013 UN Security Council attempt to refer his case to the ICC. Probe killings in Yemen? No thanks Another more recent case of alleged war crimes that is so far flying under the radar of international prosecutors is the conflict between the Saudi Arabia-led coalition and the Yemen rebels, allegedly backed by Iran. According to figures provided by the UN human rights office in Geneva the campaign has claimed the lives of at least 2,355 civilians out of the 4,500 people killed since the end of March. Despite these figures, and accusations by NGOs such as Amnesty International of possible war crimes being perpetrated by Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners, a formal investigation has yet to be launched. Initially, the Netherlands, backed by several Western countries, had drawn up a draft resolution instructing the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights to send experts to Yemen to investigate the allegations. However, opposition from Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners led to that initiative to be dropped last week, with Western governments instead accepting a resolution to support an inquiry set up by the Yemeni government. Another major focus for possible war crimes investigations has been Israel and the Palestinian Territories, especially after last year’s conflict in Gaza. Both sides in the month-long war have accused each other of perpetrating war crimes, leading to the launch of an investigation by the UN Human Rights Council. Releasing its findings in June, the investigative commission found evidence that both Israel and Hamas had committed war crimes during the conflict, calling the devastation caused in the Gaza Strip “unprecedented.” The commission hinted in its report that the upper levels of the Israeli political echelon were responsible for the policies that led to some of the violations. The chairwoman of the commission urged the international community to act on the conclusions of the report, primarily by supporting an investigation by the ICC into the status of the occupied Palestinian territories. While Israel is not a party to the ICC, the Palestinian Authority was welcomed as a member this year, and the court’s prosecutor has opened a preliminary probe into possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories, possibly committed by both Israel and the Palestinians. What comes of any of these investigations, however, still remains to be seen.
