Fatal Accident. Jenalyn Estenzo and her four-year-old son Jay were run over by a dump truck in Maguikay, Mandaue City yesterday morning. They died on the spot. Their bodies were brought to the Mandaue City Hospital where Jenalyn’s husband Agustin and daughter Roda identified them. (Sun.Star Foto/Allan Cuizon) A MOTHER and her four-year-old son were fatally run over by a 10-wheel truck while crossing a national highway in Mandaue City yesterday morning. Jenalyn Estenzo, 35, and her son Jay were pinned under the rear wheels of the truck on M.L. Quezon St. Jenalyn and Jay were together selling lanzones when the accident happened at 10:45 a.m. about 50 meters from the Maguikay flyover. Truck driver Anastacio Hermida, 49, who was arrested, said he didn’t see the two crossing the road. He had just moved after he stopped to give way to a van coming out of a department store’s driveway when he felt the truck (ABF 6468) ran over something. “Mao lang gyu’y pag-abante nako ato (It happened just when I continued driving),” he said in an interview inside the Traffic Management Unit of the Mandaue City Police Office where he was detained. He was bound for Naga City after delivering sand to Barangay Tingub, Mandaue City. After stopping, he locked the doors as some bystanders began to climb the truck to maul him, he said. Agustin Estenzo, 37, rushed from work to the City Hospital only to see his wife and son covered in blood-stained white cloth inside the morgue. Jay, the youngest of his four children, usually was with his mother as she sold lanzones on the sidewalk. “Magpuyo ra man to siya (He didn’t like moving around),” Agustin said. Some witnesses said Jenalyn was running after the boy when the accident happened. The couple’s three other children attend school. The eldest, aged 12 years old, studies in Catmon, Cebu. Agustin said his wife and Jay were still in the house in Sitio Calderohan, Barangay Maguikay when he left for work past 8 a.m. He is a machine operator in a food factory located in the same barangay. He said Jenalyn usually left the house with Jay around 8:45 a.m. He and Jenalyn, who came from Negros Occidental, had been married for 12 years. Asked whether he will press charges against the driver, Agustin said he will talk with him first. PO2 Ruben Dayon said Hermida, a resident of Naga City, Cebu, can be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide. Agustin, interviewed by reporters, said his employer promised to help settle the case with the Estenzo family. His 20-year-old son was with him when the accident happened. He said he has five children. Agustin said he only started working for his current employer less than two weeks ago. Before returning to Cebu last October, he drove a truck in Mindanao. He said it was his first time to meet an accident on the road in his 27 years of driving a truck. Glenn Antigua, operations chief of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue, advised pedestrians, including street vendors, to seek help from a traffic enforcer when crossing a highway. A traffic enforcer, he said, is assigned near the accident area. Antigua said putting a pedestrian lane in the area requires permission from the Department of Public Works and Highways as M.L. Quezon St. is a national road.

Lucy Philips-Roberts ’16 / Emertainment Monthly Contributor Whenever Survivor cranks out a two hour episode it is generally some of the worst content smushed together to fill a time slot. Or perhaps an hour of “extra footage” which is essentially a recap of what viewers have already seen thus far. Not this time. This time fans got a whole lot for one week of Survivor. The first hour featured a sample of pissy Joe Anglim; he’s so pissed his buddy Kelly Wiglesworth was voted off, and he’s threatening to strategize. And sure he’d been gunning for Stephen Fishbach for a long time, but now he means business? Maybe? But the narrative of this episode was not so much Joe vs. Stephen, but everyone vs. the rain. In an episode that hearkens back to the days of Survivor: Samoa, the tribe finds themselves not only stuck in the shelter, but also devastated by the inclement weather. This really stirred the contestant’s emotions, which, in turn, pulled at the heartstrings of everyone at home. Stephen had a particularly rough time by experiencing a physical reaction to the stress of the game, as he put it, gastrointestinal distress. It’s these really painstaking episodes where viewers get to see the toll the game has on the castaways. The reward challenge — a splashy basketball game —gave the survivors a chance to win time away from the rain to dry off and strategize, thus allowing Ciera Eastin to talk people into her agenda once again. This also left the others, including the especially damaged Stephen —dubbed “Poopy Pants” by Abi-Maria Gomes— to brave the rain a touch longer. Once at the immunity challenge, Jeff Probst prompted each player to take a black rock and a white rock from a bag. Almost never a good sign. But Jeff tells the tribe that if five people give up their chance at immunity, a construction crew will build a fancy new shelter that will block the rain. For many, the choice is a no-brainer. Though this twist was interesting, the rain was over by the time they got there. And though, yes the survivors still have fifteen days, many times they have one horrible stretch of rain and that’s it. And for some, they would be helping others win, considering that the majority would end up on the jury. The most important thing in terms of survival is fire. This new shelter guards the fire. Is that really something the players want to guarantee to their opponents? Looks like none of them are pulling out the strategy of Russell Hantz (Survivor: Samoa) to make life hell for everyone else. In the end all but Keith Nale and golden boy, Joe, were the only two who did participate in the challenge. Huzzah…? Joe won. Viewers get it. They were greeted by a cool shelter. Okay. Cookies? Did Angie Layton from Survivor: Philippines pitch in on this one? And while all of this is great and dandy, it takes away from the actual surviving aspect of Survivor. It brings back awful memories from Survivor: Fiji, which had the polarizing “Haves vs. Have-Nots” twist. If they have food and a great shelter, are they really playing Survivor? Going into tribal council, Jeremy Collins was gunning for Ciera in order to protect Stephen, and pretty much everyone else was going after Stephen. At tribal, they all harped on the sensation of voting blocks once again, which at this point is pretty repetitive. But what was interesting was a discussion of each person’s decision to give up their shot at immunity, which at that point Tasha Fox threw Joe under the bus as selfish. Cue eye rolls from Joe and a snippy retort about his life in the game. When the votes are cast, Jeremy plays one of his two idols for Stephen, saving him from a whopping five votes, which would have put him out of the game. Probably one of the most pathetic and endearing reactions came from Stephen who was completely unaware that he was in jeopardy, nor that Jeremy had an idol. In the end it was Ciera’s time to go, and with only three votes, she was gone. Hour two: coming back from a crazy and revealing tribal council, all Stephen can do to repay Jeremy is thank him and make wild promises. Though he is glad to have a second life in the game, Stephen was really blindsided by his own obliviousness. He admitted in a vulnerable moment that he may no longer be the knowing-est “Know-it-All.” At the reward challenge, Jeff introduces a survivor favorite, Survivor Folklore. Jeff tells the survivors a story about Cambodian culture, and they must run through the forest and answer questions about the story, bringing back a token to add to their collection of five. A very fast- paced challenge and one that dates all the way back to Survivor: Borneo. To top it off, the reward is a big, luxurious meal and trip to a Cambodian resort. Stephen, being the smart guy he is, tricked Abi into taking the wrong answer in the simplest way possible, which was hilarious. This challenge also gave Kelley Wentworth another idol clue, just by the luck of the draw. It came down, once again, to Stephen and Spencer Bledsoe, but Stephen took it home, inviting Tasha and Jeremy on the reward. Nothing is funnier than seeing the disgusting castaways at a fancy resort or in a helicopter. Back at camp, Kelley was able to somehow get the shelter to herself long enough to retrieve the hidden idol from under the bed. Imagine the stress of having about five seconds to climb under and out and untie the idol in the process. She just barely did it. And the fear was very real. At the immunity challenge, the overall consensus was just to not let Joe win. This challenge had the survivors stacking blocks in a certain pattern using only their feet. Foot fetishists rejoice! But alas, Joe was unable to beat Spencer, breaking his four win streak. So with Spencer winning immunity, it would seem the Joe would certainly be going home. No question right? That’s where the show is somewhat predictable, viewers know there’s no way it’s that easy. But that’s what’s great about this season — it’s challenging all these preconceptions. In any other season, the challenge threat is voted out ASAP, but in this case he’s a good ally and not a big strategist thus far. But since Kelley has Joe as an ally, she is now inclined to keep him around. Since he is solely a challenge threat, she might as well keep him on her side since he’s probably not going to win the title. But truth be told, the tribe had their sights set on Stephen. Once again at tribal, Tasha has a vendetta against voting blocks, denying their very importance, instead insisting on the return of trust and alliances. And since, according to an interview post filming, Stephen was concerned that Joe had an idol, he split the votes. Stephen also decided to use his advantage. And with all the drama and excitement with this advantage, like Dan Foley last season, Stephen played the extra vote, and was still ousted from the game.

TOKYO — If you love Japan, chances are you’d love to be fluent in Japanese (if you aren’t already). Think of all the friends you could make, and all the anime, manga and video games you could enjoy as their creators intended. But the road to fluency is long, arduous, and full of pitfalls. Japanese is considered a Category-5 language, which means that roughly 88 weeks or 2,200 hours of study is needed for the average native English-speaker to achieve everyday competency. In comparison, a Category-1 language like French requires only 24 weeks or 600 hours of study time for the average English speaker to get to grips with. Japanese also has two different syllabaries to learn, along with at least 1,945 jouyou (regular use) kanji, or Chinese characters, most of which have more than one possible pronunciation. In short, learning Japanese a pretty daunting task for your average English speaker. But just because there’s a lot to learn, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try! Even if you don’t have a natural talent for languages, haven’t been raised in a multilingual environment, or don’t have access to Japanese classes, anyone can learn to speak, read and write Japanese as long as they can put in the effort. Since most of us here at RocketNews24’s English site learned Japanese as a second language, we reckon we might have a few tips to share for those who are looking for a little kick up the booty when it comes to getting serious about learning. So, let’s get started! (Note, the following is a basic primer for some of the things that have helped us to study Japanese in a general sense. If you’re looking for specific study resources, this post has got you covered. Tip #1: Immerse yourself If you’re really serious about learning Japanese, you’re going to have to put in a lot of hours of studying. But simply cracking the books isn’t going to make you a well-rounded speaker, or listener for that matter. Believe it or not, it’s totally possible for someone to pass the highest level of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) without uttering a single spoken sentence. And although they’ll definitely help, passing those tests doesn’t mean you’ll be able to communicate well. In real life, fluency comes from practical use, which requires immersion. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to get lots of Japanese into your day no matter where you live (as long as you have an internet connection, which covers just about everybody). Love playing video games? Great! Play Japanese games. Love watching anime? Ditch the dubbed stuff and break out the subtitled versions. Like to read manga? Look for bilingual versions. Need some background music? How about some J-pop? By making sure each and every day has some exposure to Japanese language material, you can create an immersion environment for yourself wherever you are. The bonus part is that it’s fun, too. Tip #2: Structure your studies People who are self-taught in Japanese do exist, but sometimes they can find themselves getting into bad habits. Read enough manga and watch enough anime and you can definitely pick up enough to get by if you’re an observant type with a good ear, but there’s really no substitute for organized, structured studying. The absolute best thing to do is probably to study Japanese in college or at a dedicated language school, but if that’s not an option, try to check out shorter courses or perhaps find yourself a tutor. Even if you can’t get access to any Japanese tuition, pick up some textbooks and work your way through them with your own study plan. Working your way through the prep books for the JLPT is an excellent way to teach yourself everything you should be studying. In fact, prepping for and sitting the JLPT at each level is an excellent way for otherwise self-taught students to continuously “level up” and meet study goals. A combination of points 1 and 2 should be the foundation upon which you base your language learning. Book smarts will only get you so far without any of the more practical stuff, and daily exposure to Japanese won’t get you where you need to go without a solid basis in structured studying. Tip #3: Build your vocabulary naturally Rather than studying dry lists of vocabulary, a handy trick is to buy yourself a little notebook and write down a new Japanese word (along with its written form and definition) every time you hear it while you’re immersing yourself (see hint #1). Doing it this way will help your brain to make connections between the word and the situation in which it’s used, and will ensure that the vocabulary “sticks” more firmly than it would if you had simply come across it on a vocab list in a textbook. I started learning Japanese around nine years ago and I’ve filled countless notebooks like this, and continue to practice this little trick to this day. Tip #4: Learn the patterns One thing you might not initially have noticed while studying is that Japanese tends to follow a series of sentence patterns. Along with the variety of situational phrases like “itadakimasu,” “otsukaresama,” and so on, which don’t appear in English, Japanese people also tend to say certain things in ways we just don’t in English. One pitfall English speaking learners of Japanese fall into is attempting to memorise Japanese vocabulary and then trying to use those words to express what they want to say in the exact same way they would in English. In reality, Japanese and English are very different languages and simply swapping words about is going to make you sound like something Google translate might spit out. Memorising a bunch of sentence patterns and adapting them to fit your conversational needs is going to get you a lot further than trying to take the English thought in your head and verbalise it the same way using Japanese words. Tip #5: Make mistakes Perfection is the enemy of good, and being afraid to make mistakes when it comes to learning a language is only going to hinder your progress. Our brains tend to remember unpleasant memories a little more clearly than pleasant ones (grr!) so making an embarrassing Japanese snafu is in actuality an excellent way to make sure you’ll never repeat the same error. And if you’re not making any mistakes at all, then you’re clearly not studying hard enough. The person who dives into a conversation head-first, making tons of errors yet doing their best to communicate is going to become a better speaker much, much faster than the person who buries their head in a book and hesitantly regurgitates only those nuggets of language information they’ve already completely mastered. Tip #6: Stay humble Japanese is such an awesome language, full of interesting turns of phrase and exciting little squiggly characters to draw. It’s also got that “cool” factor that sometimes tempts people to brag about how awesome they are for being able to speak some Japanese. But it’s really important to stay humble when learning any language. Start thinking your Japanese is the cat’s whiskers (plastic sensei, much?), and you’re going to get complacent and stop improving. Of course, it’s completely your choice how much Japanese you want to learn, and everyone has different needs and goals when it comes to learning another language. Most people who’ve studied Japanese as a second language in a group or school setting, however, can name at least one person who tries to undermine the confidence of others with one-upmanship. The best thing is to stick to the pace that works for you, and ignore what everyone else around you is doing. Learn with friends, make mistakes together, pool your knowledge and be open to criticism.

They left no manifesto. The hard drive was gone from their computer. And their new cell phones were apparently smashed. Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik did their best to fly under the radar. Neither got into trouble with the law. And neither one was on any list of potentially radicalized people. So, a day after one of the deadliest mass shooting in the United States, authorities are still left wondering what motivated the couple to mow down dozens of people at a holiday luncheon in San Bernardino, California. Fourteen people died and 21 were injured. Officials say part of the reason may have been Farook's apparent radicalization. Part of it may have stemmed from workplace tensions. But nothing concrete has surfaced. "It would be irresponsible and premature for me to call this terrorism," said FBI official David Bodwich on Thursday. "The FBI defines terrorism very specifically, and that is the big question for us: What is the motivation for this?" Was he radicalized? One avenue investigators are exploring are Farook's communications with at least one person who was being investigated for possible terror connections. Some were by phone, some conducted on social media. "These appear to be soft connections," an official said, meaning they were not frequent contacts. Farook's last communication with the contacts was months ago. The FBI wants to interview some of them to learn more about their conversations with Farook. A federal official said Farook has "overseas communications and associations" but it's not yet clear how relevant they are to the shootings. "We don't know yet what they mean," the official said. There are no clear ties to overseas terrorists groups so far.

The trail for the eighth Paris attacker, Salah Abdeslam, has gone cold, a senior European counterterrorism official told CNN late Thursday, who also said intelligence indicates ISIS wishes to strike the United Kingdom as a followup to its recent attack in France. European security agencies have had no trace of Abdeslam since he was dropped off by a friend in the Brussels district of Schaerbeek on November 14, the day after the attacks. The official said late Thursday investigators now believe he developed cold feet about blowing himself up in Paris. "He was freaking out, he was scared when he called his friends in Brussels to come and pick him up that night from Paris," the official told CNN. The official said he believed ISIS might not welcome him back into the fold, even if he was able to reach Syria. Salah Abdeslam: The mystery of France's most-wanted man Intel: United Kingdom is next ISIS target Meanwhile, intelligence obtained by European security agencies indicates that ISIS is aiming to attack the United Kingdom in a follow-up to its Paris operation, the official said. The intelligence suggests British ISIS fighters have been tasked by senior ISIS operatives in the so-called caliphate to return home and carry out an attack. It's not clear how imminent the threat is nor the specific location. However, the official said the concerns have been compounded by the vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday to authorize British airstrikes against ISIS in Syria. The official did not say whether one factor in the intelligence warning was the arrest of a British ISIS operative linked to "Jihadi John" in Turkey in November. Aine Lesley Davis, a British ISIS operative, was arrested in Istanbul the same day as the Paris attacks as he planned to travel to Europe to deliver orders on planned terror attacks, a Turkish official told CNN last month. The information was first reported by the leading Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, whose account a Turkish official confirmed to CNN. Davis was arrested after Turkish intelligence worked with Britain's MI6 service to monitor the movements of a messenger linked to Jihadi John inside the Syrian city of Raqqa, Hurriyet said. Intelligence on possible locations in Syria for Davis' colleague, ISIS militant Jihadi John, were also shared by Turkish National Intelligence to the CIA and MI6. The airstrikes in Raqqa that U.S. officials say killed Jihadi John, real name Mohammed Emwazi, on November 12 followed hours later, the paper said. A Tunisian connection The senior official also told CNN that intelligence suggests one of the most senior figures in ISIS's external operations unit is a Tunisian ISIS operative, who is believed to have been one of the brains behind the Paris attacks and continues to be involved in plans to attack the West. They said Western intelligence agencies are aware of his identity and that the Tunisian was working with several French ISIS fighters in and around Raqqa, the de facto ISIS capital in Syria. The official said it was possible the external operations cell reports up to Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, the top ISIS leader in Syria, who has repeatedly issued fatwas calling for attacks against Western countries involved in airstrikes against ISIS. CNN's Barbara Starr has previously reported Adnani is the head of ISIS's external operations, according to U.S. officials.

Electronic Arts oferă titlul Martial Arts RPG Jade Empire gratuit, în cadrul celei mai recente promoții On The House.

Title: Batman™: Arkham Knight - Catwoman's Revenge Genre: Action, Adventure Developer: Rocksteady Studios For Catwoman, revenge is swift. Very swift - this Batman: Arkham Knight DLC took me only a half hour to complete. Catwoman’s Revenge is a mostly fun, self-contained story set in a toy store that The Riddler has converted into a robot factory, and the dark, moody Arkham take on ‘toys’ - if you can call these monstrous figures that - is a genuine delight. It is however, a very slight experience that brings nothing new to Arkham’s world. If you’ve played Arkham Knight and its predecessors, you’ll know Catwoman’s set of skills by now. She can crawl along designated parts of the ceiling, use a whip, and generally move a little faster than Batman in combat. Catwoman’s Revenge makes good use of each, though I wish I’d been able to let her loose in a less confining environment. With its dark, twisting corridors, dusty teddy bears and sad model planes, ‘Winslow’s Toy Shop’ is a wonderfully twisted, Tim Burton-esque place to look at. It’s just a very small space, made to feel only slightly larger by plenty of underground spots to hide and lots of climbable ceilings. Consequently the first section, which requires Catwoman to stealthily pick off guards, took me no time at all. I was there just long enough to appreciate the gag-heavy NPC dialogue: hired goons in the Arkham games have never been so comically dumb. Once you’re done sneaking around, Catwoman’s Revenge switches gears into more traditional Arkham Knight rhythms, as the Riddler throws wave after wave of robots at you in an electrified arena. The sheer volume of them made this quite a difficult fight at first, but that means it creates lots of opportunity for stringing some fun combos. It’s a shame that outside of this fight, there’s very little to do in Riddler’s secret factory. There are a handful of collectables and a half-baked puzzle I quickly solved through trial and error, but otherwise it’s disappointingly devoid of Nigma’s usual mind-meddling finesse. The life of Catwoman’s Revenge is extended somewhat through a couple of new AR maps. Though they virtually rehash the beats of its campaign - sneak, then fight on an electrified floor - I had fun fighting against tougher enemies and sentry guns. It's a delight to put Catwoman's skills to use against Arkham's more formidable foes, but the tantalizing taste I was given here just left me hungry for more.

(HealthDay News) -- American women are catching up to men when it comes to using and abusing alcohol, a new government report shows. The researchers analyzed data from 2002 to 2012 and found that reported alcohol consumption in the previous 30 days rose among women, from almost 45 percent to more than 48 percent, while it fell among men, from slightly more than 57 percent to just over 56 percent. "We found that over that period of time, differences in measures such as current drinking, number of drinking days per month, reaching criteria for an alcohol use disorder, and driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year, all narrowed for females and males," study leader Aaron White, senior scientific advisor to the director of the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), said in an institute news release. "Males still consume more alcohol, but the differences between men and women are diminishing," he added. The investigators found that the average number of drinking days in the past month also increased among women, from 6.8 to 7.3 days, but fell among men, from 9.9 to 9.5 days. Binge drinking among college students aged 18 to 25 did not change during the study period. However, among those aged 18 to 25 who weren't in college, there was a large increase in binge drinking among women but a significant decrease among men. Binge drinking in men is defined as having five or more drinks on a given occasion; in women it's four or more drinks. There was only one area of drinking where the difference between women and men increased during the study period. "The prevalence of combining alcohol with marijuana during the last drinking occasion among 18- to 25-year-old male drinkers increased from 15 percent to 19 percent, while the prevalence of combining alcohol with marijuana during the last drinking occasion among 18- to 25-year-old female drinkers remained steady at about 10 percent," White said. The study was published online Nov. 23 in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. The reasons for the narrowing gap in alcohol use between women and men aren't clear and don't seem to be associated with factors such as employment, pregnancy or marital status, the researchers said. They called for more studies to identify the reasons for the trend, and how that might affect prevention and treatment efforts. "This study confirms what other recent reports have suggested about changing patterns of alcohol use by men and women in the U.S.," NIAAA Director George Koob said in the news release. Increasing alcohol use by women is a cause for concern because they are at greater risk than men for a number of alcohol-related health problems, including liver inflammation, heart disease, neurotoxicity and cancer, Koob said

A team of neuroscientists has discovered the way in which the illness destroys the ability for brain cells to “talk” to each other. They believe the key finding can enable them to develop treatments to spot the devastating illness as early as possible. The wide-ranging study found that synapses, the links between brain cells, are destroyed in the very early stages of the degenerative condition. As a result, changes in the brain can start to occur years before a person starts to show any symptoms which begin mildly and gradually worsen over time. Neuroscientist Dr Vladimir Sytnyk, who led the research at the University of New South Wales in Australia and published yesterday in the journal Nature Communications, said the discovery could lead to considerably more effective treatment of a condition which still has no cure. Dr Sytnyk said: “One of the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of synapses. “In Alzheimer’s disease, this loss of synapses occurs very early on, when people still only have mild cognitive impairment and long before the nerve cells themselves die. “We have identified a new molecular mechanism which directly contributes to this synapse loss – a discovery we hope could eventually lead to earlier diagnosis of the disease and new treatments.” Dr Emma O’Brien, from Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Everything we do, say or think is the result of signals sent between nerve cells in the brain. “In Alzheimer’s disease, nerve cell communication points begin to break down, leading to symptoms like confusion and memory loss. “This study sheds light on one of the molecular chain of events that could be driving the loss of nerve cell communication points in Alzheimer’s, but it is too soon to conclude whether this could be targeted to develop new treatments or to improve diagnosis. “The ability to accurately identify Alzheimer’s at the earliest stages would be a crucial step forward for research, as it’s likely that new treatments will have the best chance of success if given early. It’s vitally important we invest in research to help the half a million people living with Alzheimer’s in the UK.” The battle to combat dementia in the UK was given a huge boost this week when Chancellor George Osborne unveiled plans for a new £150million research institute into the condition. The national centre is expected to be in place by 2020, Alzheimer’s Research UK said.

ISIS says it's behind a deadly attack on a Shiite mosque in Bangladesh -- a claim that, if true, shows the terrorist group's reach into the South Asian nation. About 20 people were conducting their evening prayers inside a mosque in Bogra, a district in northern Bangladesh about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Dhaka, when gunmen burst in Thursday. At least one person died and three more were wounded before the assailants fled, Bogra police Superintendent Mohammad Asaduzzaman said. ISIS -- a Sunni extremist group that's taken over vast swaths of Syria and Iraq and has been tied to terror attacks across Asia, Africa and Europe -- claimed credit for the attack in a statement distributed online by supporters. Asaduzzaman said authorities knew of the claim but couldn't immediately verify it. Regardless, Thursday's mosque attack is the latest example in which ISIS has boasted about carrying out violence in Bangladesh. One such instance came in September, when 51-year-old Italian national Cesare Tavella was shot dead while jogging home in Dhaka after swimming in the American International School's pool. A statement from ISIS asserted then that "the soldiers of the Caliphate in Bangladesh" tracked Tavella and then shot him, according to Flashpoint Global Partners, a group that tracks jihadist activity. "We say to all citizens of the Crusader coalition, you will not be safe in the Muslim lands," ISIS warned, "and this is just the beginning." Weeks later, though, police in the Bangladeshi capital said four Bangladeshi citizens had been arrested in Tavella's killing. Dhaka police commissioner Muntashirul Islam described these suspects as contract killers hired by a person known as "Big Brother" to kill a foreigner, preferably with "white skin." None of these four arrested men or "Big Brother," who hadn't been caught as of late October, was believed to have any ties to ISIS, according to Islam.
