  1. “It is what it is. I took a mug shot," Trump said Thursday night. Former President Donald Trump was booked at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta on Thursday. ATLANTA — From the moment it was snapped in the Fulton County Jail on Thursday, Donald Trump's mug shot secured a place as an artifact of American history — a defiant-looking man, once one of the most powerful on Earth, now glowering in a red tie and a blue suit before a drab backdrop and under the stark glow of a flashbulb. The booking photo ricocheted across the internet, sliding into text messages, bursting across social media and appearing on fundraising appeals and T-shirts and across news sites and cable networks. One Trump adviser joked that he might buy a T-shirt company. Trump's opponents seized with delight: There, after all the years of accusations he was a criminal and only on the fourth arrest, was proof of his prosecution in the form of a watermarked booking picture. The image is sure to fuel campaign fodder for elections to come and be reprised by Democrats who will argue it is evidence that Trump is unfit to hold office. But there may have been no more delight than among the former president's allies — who quickly saw the picture not as a liability but as an asset, the kind of rallying cry that will help Trump lock up his party's support and recapture the White House. Ford O’Connell, a Republican consultant, said the booking photo was unnecessary — Trump is one of the most photographed and recognizable people in the world — and warned it ultimately could work against those who seemed to be delighting at seeing it. “The Democrats are likely going to regret the Trump mug shot politically,” O’Connell said. “It’s over the top.” Trump, for his part, downplayed the significance. “It is what it is,” he said in an interview with Newsmax later in the evening. “I took a mug shot.” 'A tale of woe' Trump's campaign, however, didn’t let the moment pass by. His campaign became instantly protective of it. "If you are a campaign, PAC, scammer and you try raising money off the mugshot," a senior adviser, Chris LaCivita, wrote on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, continuing, "and you have not received prior permission …WE ARE COMING AFTER YOU you will NOT SCAM DONORS." Craig Shirley, a presidential historian and biographer of Ronald Reagan, said Trump’s mug shot would throw gasoline on the Republican front-runner’s surging lead as he casts the latest in an unprecedented series of indictments against him as the work of an overzealous district attorney intent on carving out a political future of her own. Trump, who came to office on a surge of populist sentiment, has repeatedly sought to present himself as the victim of a rigged justice system as the criminal charges against him pile up. “On a political level, this only strengthens Donald Trump’s hand,” Shirley said. “The Fulton County DA represents the establishment. Joe Biden represents the establishment. Merrick Garland” — Biden’s attorney general — “represents the establishment. All of these establishment forces have been arrayed against Donald Trump, who is the epitome of the anti-establishment.” Shirley said the image could reinforce the notion that Trump faces an unprecedented force of federal and state officials intent on keeping him from office. “Everyone has a tale of woe about their run-ins with some form of government,” he added. “There’s no downside for Donald Trump. He’ll laugh all the way to the White House.” Trump wasted no time using the picture to boost his campaign coffers, sharing it alongside a link to his website in a post to X — his first on the platform formerly known as Twitter since he was booted in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Atlanta trial attorney Craig Timmons, a former federal prosecutor, said two competing trials are underway in which the defense and the prosecution will both seek to capitalize on the optics of Trump’s surrender. There’s the trial in the court of public opinion “and the trial going on in the court,” Timmons said. “What they care about is public opinion,” he said of Trump and his more than a dozen co-defendants. Timmons said that booking pictures can color the optics of a trial and that prosecutors use them to drive their legal case. “You want to have a presentable mug shot, because you’ll often see it in the state’s closing argument,” he said. “If you have a mug shot that makes you look like a gangster, then the case is not going to go well.” Defendants could see their faces emblazoned onscreen for the jury, pitched alongside that of the alleged criminal. “If I was a prosecutor, I’d have Rudy’s up there, then list the charges,” he added, referring to Trump’s former attorney Rudy Giuliani. He said one of the defendants who smiled at the camera, Jenna Ellis, a former lawyer for Trump, made the right call. “Some people look at it and think it’s flippant, but it’s smart,” Timmons said, adding, “She’s a lawyer.” 'The stakes of Donald Trump’s indictment' Allies of Trump began sharing his mug shot online almost immediately after its release, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., writing on X, “This is the photo that will win the 2024 Presidential election.” Another captioned the image, “My President. Trump 2024.” A Republican senator began fundraising off it. Amy Kremer, who helped organize the rally near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, digitally altered a version of her own mug shot and shared it online — even though she hasn't been charged and wasn't arrested. David Greenberg, a professor of history at Rutgers University, said Trump’s booking photograph had the power to drive a sweeping political narrative that could carry through the 2024 presidential election. “They capture so much of the different feelings: anger, resentment, victimization, criminality — carries a lot of different meanings at once. And so they become very useful symbols in our political discourse,” Greenberg said. “It brings home in a very powerful, visceral, visual way the stakes of Donald Trump’s indictments and, simultaneously, his bid for re-election.” Greenberg recalled an infamous image from the Watergate trial: “a checkerboard-style image of one Watergate felon after another, like on an FBI Most Wanted picture.” “And Nixon, who was never indicted himself, he’s there with them,” Greenberg said. "It’s the idea that criminal racket was being run out of the White House.” Link: Click
  2. Heineken has finally sold off its Russian business for €1 - or 86p - nearly a year and a half after first pledging to do so. The Dutch brewer said it will take a loss of €300m on the division, which is being offloaded to Russia's Arnest, which makes aerosol cans. Many Western firms jettisoned their Russian operations when the country invaded Ukraine last February. Heineken's Dolf van den Brink said: "It took much longer than we had hoped." The chief executive and chairman added: "[But] this transaction secures the livelihoods of our employees and allows us to exit the country in a responsible manner." For €1, Arnest will buy seven breweries and take on 1,800 workers with guarantees to employ them for the next three years. The manufacture of the Amstel beer brand will be phased out over six months, joining Heineken lager which the company said was removed in 2022. "Recent developments demonstrate the significant challenges faced by large manufacturing companies in exiting Russia," Mr van den Brink said. Last month, President Vladimir Putin seized Russian assets owned by Carlsberg and French yoghurt-maker Danone. Earlier this week, the franchise owner of Domino's Pizza signalled it would shut its Russian shops and put the business into bankruptcy. DP Eurasia said it would no longer try to sell the operation because of an "increasingly challenging environment". Russia has been targeted by a number of economic sanctions since its tanks rolled into Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Many household names decided to close their operations in the immediate aftermath of the invasion. Others, such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola, faced pressure to exit Russia. There has also been ongoing criticism for the ones that have continued business. Yale University's School of Management has been tracking which firms have exited and which have stayed. Those that remain include the likes of UK telecoms firm BT Group, and Lacoste, the upmarket French sportswear brand. Link: Click

  4. Volvo has denied us Brits its saloons and estates, and it doesn’t look like we’ll get the MPV either Big news! Volvo has announced that its first ever MPV is coming soon, and this is the very first picture of it. It’ll be called the EM90 and it’s described as a “fully electric premium MPV” that has been designed to feel “like a Scandinavian living room on the move". A bit like IKEA on wheels. Probably. But wait, Volvo has already canned all of its saloons and estates for the UK, so will we get the first people carrier? Unlikely. “Initially, this model will be offered only in mainland China,” said a Volvo spokesperson. “There are currently no plans to offer this vehicle in the UK.” Shame. It looks like the EM90 will be based on a fellow Geely product – the Zeekr 009 – which claims a range of 511 miles from its giant 140kWh battery and a frankly ludicrous 536bhp from its twin-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain. Expect the Scandi variation to make do with a little less grille though, and of course you’ll get the classic Thor’s hammer lighting. That’s about all we know so far, but the full reveal is scheduled for November, and pre-orders will start for Chinese customers on the very same day. Link: Click

  6. The indictment alleges Giuliani was a key part of a criminal conspiracy, pressing election officials to act on voting fraud claims he was repeatedly told were false. Rudy Giuliani, a Trump lawyer who championed the former president’s bogus election fraud claims, turned himself in to authorities in Georgia on Wednesday to face racketeering charges alleging he meddled in the state’s 2020 presidential election. He was booked at the Fulton County Jail, where he had his mug shot taken, in the midafternoon. A judge signed off on a $150,000 bond agreement Giuliani's lawyers worked out with prosecutors. Giuliani was indignant about the charges as he left the jail, telling a crush of reporters that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis “will go down in American history as having conducted one of the worst attacks on the American Constitution ever when this case is dismissed.” His arraignment is expected in the next week or two, and it could take place virtually. Giuliani and Trump both face 13 counts, more than the 17 other defendants in the case. Trump has said he will surrender at the Atlanta jail Thursday. Giuliani has maintained his innocence, claiming the only thing he’s guilty of was zealously advocating for his client. "I am being indicted because I'm a lawyer," Giuliani told reporters after he was booked at the Fulton County Jail. The sheriff's office released a mug shot after his booking. “I get photographed, isn’t that nice? A mug shot for the mayor who probably put the worst criminal of the 20th century in jail,” Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, complained to reporters when he left his apartment to travel to Atlanta. The indictment alleges that Giuliani was a key part of a criminal conspiracy, pressing election officials in Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania to act on voting fraud claims he was repeatedly told were false. Giuliani was also charged with promoting false claims that voting machines were rigged and making false claims in sworn legal filings. In addition, the indictment singles out false claims Giuliani made about Georgia election worker Ruby Freeman, who was targeted with death threats and harassed as a result of the phony allegations. Giuliani is being represented by New York-based attorney John Esposito, a former Manhattan assistant district attorney. The main charge against Giuliani — racketeering — is similar to a federal law he used with great success when he was U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. Giuliani predicted Wednesday that he will be vindicated. “This will be proven to be like all the rest, a complete hoax and a lie,” he said. Giuliani appears to be one of the six alleged co-conspirators in special counsel Jack Smith’s federal criminal case against Trump. At his arraignment in that case, Trump pleaded not guilty. Giuliani, who hasn’t been charged, has denied any wrongdoing. Link: Click Here
  7. Soon after the touchdown, Isro released an image of the Chandrayaan-3 landing site with one of the four legs of the lander on the right India's Moon rover has taken first steps on the lunar surface a day after the country made history by becoming the first to land near the south pole. Chandrayaan-3's rover "ramped down" from the lander and "India took a walk on the Moon!", the space agency said. The Vikram lander successfully touched down as planned on Wednesday evening. With this, India joins an elite club of countries to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the US, the former Soviet Union and China. The 26kg rover called Pragyaan (the Sanskrit word for wisdom) was carried to the Moon in the Vikram lander's belly. After the dust raised by last evening's landing had settled, panels on one side of Vikram opened to deploy a ramp to enable Pragyaan to slide down to the lunar surface. It will now roam around the rocks and craters, gathering crucial data and images to be sent back to Earth for analysis. Pragyaan is carrying two scientific instruments which will try to find out what minerals are present on the lunar surface and study the chemical composition of the soil. Pragyaan will communicate only with the lander which will send the information to the orbiter from Chandrayaan-2 - which is still circling the Moon - to pass it on to the Earth for analysis. The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has said that the rover will move at a speed of 1cm per second - with each step it will also leave on the Moon's surface the imprint of Isro's logo and emblem embossed on its six wheels. India makes historic landing near Moon's south pole The race to unravel the mysteries of Moon's south pole The landing coincides with the start of a lunar day - a day on the Moon equals a little over four weeks on Earth and this will mean the lander and rover will have 14 days of sunlight to charge their batteries. Once night falls, they will discharge and stop working. It is not yet clear whether they will come back to life when the next lunar day starts. The lander is also carrying several scientific instruments which will help find out what goes on the Moon's surface and above and below it. Moon is thought to hold important minerals but one of the major goals of Chandrayaan-3 is to hunt for water - scientists say the huge craters in the south pole region which are permanently in shadow hold ice which could support human habitation on the Moon in future. It could also be used for supplying propellant for spacecraft headed to Mars and other distant destinations. On Wednesday, tense moments preceded the touchdown as the lander began its precarious descent. The lander's speed was gradually reduced from 1.68km per second to almost zero, enabling it to make a soft landing on the lunar surface. The historic moment was greeted with celebrations across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying "India is now on the Moon" and that "we have reached where no other country could". The landing came just days after Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft spun out of control and crashed into the Moon. The crash also put the spotlight on the difficult terrain of the south pole region where the surface is "very uneven" and "full of craters and boulders". India's latest Moon mission sends first photos India's second lunar mission, which also attempted to soft-land there in 2019, was unsuccessful - its lander and rover were destroyed, though its orbiter survived. Its continues to circle the Moon even today and is helping the Vikram lander send images and data to Earth for analysis. India is not the only country with an eye on the Moon - there's a growing global interest in it, with many other missions headed to the lunar surface in the near future. And scientists say there is still much to understand about the Moon that's often described as a gateway to deep space. Link: Click here

  11. The Rio subcompact sedan and hatchback, which started at $17,875, won't continue in the U.S. past the 2023 model year. -Kia is discontinuing the Rio in the U.S. after the 2023 model year, as reported by Automotive News. -The Rio subcompact was offered as a sedan and a hatchback, with both starting under $20,000. -It's possible that the new Kia K3 will serve as a replacement for the Rio, but it will surely be more expensive. The Kia Rio is the latest victim in the string of affordable small-car discontinuations in the U.S. The subcompact sedan and hatchback reportedly won't return for the 2024 model year. A Kia U.S. representative declined to confirm the news to C/D. The Rio was one of just three remaining sub-$20,000 new cars available in the U.S. for the 2023 model year. With the impending cancellation of the Mitsubishi Mirage, this will leave only the Nissan Versa as a member of this club going forward, although Nissan has not yet announced 2024 Versa information. Through July of this year, Kia has sold 16,554 units of the Rio, a 2 percent decline compared with last year. But the Rio has never been among Kia's bestselling models, and its low prices likely mean slim profit margins. The compact Forte sedan will now be the cheapest model in the Kia lineup. It started at $20,815 for the 2023 model year; 2024 pricing hasn't yet been announced. Kia also recently revealed a new small sedan called the K3. We expect it to serve as a replacement for both the Rio and the Forte going forward, but it's not likely to carry a sub-$20,000 starting price. Look for more information on this new model to come later this year, as it could arrive in the U.S. for the 2025 model year. Link: Click Here
  12. There are many health benefits of owning a pet. They can increase opportunities to exercise, get outside, and socialize. Regular walking or playing with pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pets can help manage loneliness and depression by giving us companionship. Most households in the United States have at least one pet. Studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets is linked to several health benefits, including: Decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD. Increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities; better cognitive function in older adults; and more opportunities to socialize Pick the Right Pet Before adopting a new pet, make sure that it is the right one for you and your family. Do some research beforehand about the specific needs of the animal. Ask yourself these questions before getting a pet: How long will this animal live? What does the pet eat? How much exercise does the pet need? How large will it become? How much will veterinary care cost? Do I have enough time to properly care for and clean up after the pet? What type of habitat does this pet need to be healthy? What type of exercise does this pet need? Are pets allowed in my house, apartment, or condominium? Are there young children, older people, or people with weak immune systems who will care for or be around the pet? Some people are at higher risk for diseases animals can carry Children younger than 5 years old, people with weakened immune systems, and people 65 years of age and older are more likely to get diseases spread between animals and people (also known as zoonotic diseases). People who are pregnant are also at a higher risk for certain animal-related diseases. Before getting a new pet, keep the following in mind: Households with children younger than 5 years old should not have pet reptiles (turtles, lizards, snakes), amphibians (frogs, toads), or backyard poultry because of the risk of serious illness from harmful germs spread between these animals and young children. People with weakened immune systems should take extra precautions when choosing and handling pets. Talk to a veterinarian for help picking the best pet. People who are pregnant should avoid adopting a new cat or handling stray cats, especially kittens. Cats can carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis—a disease that can cause birth defects. If you are pregnant, you do not need to give up your current cat, but you should avoid handling cat litter. People who are pregnant should avoid contact with pet rodents to prevent exposure to lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, which can cause birth defects. If you’re pregnant and have a pet rodent, avoid direct contact and have someone else clean its habitat. Link: Click Here
  13. It's extremely unlikely that a single violation of his release conditions, unless it’s especially egregious, would land Trump in pretrial detention, Georgia legal experts told NBC News. Former President Donald Trump speaks at the South Carolina Republican Party's Silver Elephant Dinner in Columbia on Aug. 5. After Donald Trump surrenders to Fulton County authorities Thursday, the former president will be released from custody in Georgia under an already agreed-upon set of conditions, including a $200,000 bond. As part of the conditions, Trump will be prohibited from doing anything a judge could interpret as an effort to intimidate co-defendants or witnesses or “otherwise obstruct the administration of justice.” More specifically, Trump “shall make no direct or indirect threat of any nature” against any co-defendant, witness or victim, the community or property in the community. “The above shall include, but are not limited to, posts on social media or reposts of posts made by another individual on social media,” reads the bond order, entered Monday by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee. So what happens if Trump, who has previously lashed out at efforts to restrict his comments on social media, violates the order? The practical difficulties of imprisoning a former president and the leading candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination in the Fulton County Jail make it extremely unlikely that a single violation of his release conditions, unless it’s especially egregious, would land Trump in pretrial detention, Georgia legal experts say. “Donald Trump isn’t the kind of person you can just throw in the slammer,” Georgia State University law professor Caren Morrison said. “He’s got to have his security guys, his Secret Service, with him, and they can’t do anything that would possibly jeopardize his personal safety. So I think it would be extremely difficult to do.” Judges have a variety of options to ensure a defendant’s compliance with a bond order short of issuing an arrest warrant, and they usually don’t like to send defendants to jail after they’ve already posted bond, Morrison said. “They’re not necessarily jail-happy,” she said. “I think they do try to give people a chance to straighten themselves out rather than getting remanded. But if the behavior continues or is repeated, then yeah, that’s what you’re looking at at the end of the road.” If Trump makes social media posts that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis considers threatening, he could be ordered to attend a hearing at which McAfee would review his conduct and determine whether it really violated the conditions of his release. If McAfee were to rule that Trump did violate the conditions, he would decide the appropriate punishment. Alternatives to revoking Trump’s bond could include simply warning him against future violations, holding him civil contempt and fining him daily until the posts are deleted or allowing him to remain free but imposing stricter restrictions on his speech. “The court’s power to ensure that its order is enforced will really depend on the manner in which the accused person has violated that order,” said state Rep. Tanya Miller, a former prosecutor in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. “The remedy can be fashioned to get at that violation, and it can mean revoking a bond, it can mean just adding additional conditions.” However, even if a post from Trump appears to violate the conditions of his release, that’s no guarantee that Willis will alert McAfee of the violation or ask for Trump’s bond to be revoked. “I would think that if it’s a close call, the state may decide to not be so heavy-handed, just to keep their case clean and moving forward,” Miller said. “But if there is a clear violation on all fours, for example someone has some audiotape of one of the defendants actively engaging in threats or actively trying to influence a witness, then I think the state has an obligation to ensure the integrity of the case and the integrity of the trial.” Link:Here
  14. A building in central Moscow was reportedly hit A drone has hit a building in central Moscow that was under construction, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said. Air defences also shot down two drones in the Mozhaisk and Khimki districts of the Moscow region, the defence ministry added. There are no reports of casualties and it is not clear who carried out the attack. Russian officials described it as "another attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack". Ukraine does not usually comment on who is behind attacks inside Russian territory. All flights were suspended to and from Moscow's airports early on Wednesday, a measure that has been taken repeatedly in recent days. It was the sixth consecutive night of aerial attacks on Russia's capital region, AFP news agency reported. The drone that hit the building under construction at the Moscow City complex had been "suppressed by electronic warfare", the defence ministry said. It lost control and collided with the building, it added. In response to reports of the downed drones, the US State Department said Washington did not encourage drone attacks in Russia. US officials added it was up to Ukraine to decide how to defend itself, and that Russia could end the war at any time by withdrawing from its neighbour. Also overnight, three elderly people were killed in Russian shelling near the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman, officials said. Link: Here
