  3. Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes says England can deal with "extreme spin" if the rest of the series in India is played on pitches offering excessive turn. England are 1-0 up in the five-match series after winning an astonishing first Test by 28 runs in Hyderabad. They were in the same position three years ago, only to lose the next three Tests on pitches that turned sharply. "Quite a few of the lads have a gameplan that will do well on those pitches," said Surrey gloveman Foakes. England's win in the first Test was only India's fourth defeat in 47 home matches. On a pitch that turned, but rarely dramatically, the tourists overturned a 190-run first-innings deficit thanks mainly to Ollie Pope's epic 196 and 7-62 by debutant spinner Tom Hartley. In 2021, England comfortably defeated India in the first Test on an incredibly flat pitch in Chennai. With vastly different surfaces prepared for the remainder of the series, England struggled against India's spinners and did not manage a total above 205 in any of the last three Tests. "That first Test was played on a flat wicket and then they went to raging 'bunsens'," said 30-year-old Foakes. "All three were probably the worst pitches I've batted on." Even though England still lost 14 wickets to spin in Hyderabad, the tourists were able to put the home attack under huge pressure. With the likes of Pope and Ben Duckett utilising all manner of sweeps and reverse-sweeps, the second innings was the first time in four years that both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who will miss the second Test through injury, conceded more than 100 runs. And Foakes says England, under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, have a much different approach to tackling India's skilful spinners than 2021. The second Test in Visakhapatnam, starting on Friday, could be played on a pitch that spins more than the first Test. "It's more of a mindset shift of how to go about it, because in those conditions the bowler is massive favourite to win the contest," said Foakes. "It's how many blows you can put in. "Before there was a fear of getting out and that put us in our shells. Now it's not worrying that you are getting out and accepting that you probably are on those sorts of surfaces. You can actually go and dominate at times as well." Foakes returned to the England XI in Hyderabad for the first time since February. In the home summer, Jonny Bairstow kept wicket as England looked to pack their batting line-up during the Ashes. However, with Harry Brook missing for personal reasons, Bairstow is playing as a specialist batter and Foakes has returned behind the stumps. "I obviously found missing the Ashes difficult," said Foakes, who has played 21 Tests for England. "With my career in England being in and out a lot it wasn't as if I was shocked. It sucks getting dropped, but I have come back a few times. I've proved I can come in and out so I definitely don't think that as much now." Link
  4. While shark sightings along Sydney’s ocean-facing beaches are common, attacks in its iconic harbor are rare. SYDNEY, Australia — A female swimmer was seriously injured in a shark attack in Sydney Harbor and taken to the hospital in stable condition, authorities said Tuesday. The Sydney harbor shore on Oct. 1, 2023. Emergency services were called to a private wharf in Elizabeth Bay on Monday evening and found a woman, believed to be in her 20s, with “a serious injury” to her right leg, police in the state of New South Wales said in a statement. Police said they had been told the woman was swimming off the wharf when the shark attacked her. The incident happened about 60 feet from the jetty, media reported, citing residents. While shark sightings along Sydney’s ocean-facing beaches are common, attacks in its iconic harbor are rare. The incident on Monday took place near the Opera House and Harbor Bridge. “Shark bites are really rare ... the last incident that occurred in Sydney Harbor was in 2009,” Amy Smoothey, senior shark scientist at the New South Wales department of primary industries, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Based on the bite patterns and images provided, the woman was most likely attacked by a bull shark, Smoothey said. Link
  5. The impending 600bhp behemoth gets a three-screen digital dash and plenty of swanky materials Following on from the initial reveal of its really slow, all-electric Wagoneer S SUV, Jeep has now released several interior shots and, gods be good, we’re impressed. The first thing you’ll notice is the digitalised dash, which has been divided into three subsections: the driver’s display shows, er, driving information, the mid-section acts as the infotainment hub, and the far passenger side corner seems to be a secondary entertainment screen. That won’t get at all annoying when your kids keep ordering stuff from Amazon. An ambience strip runs beneath and further segments the dash from the lower sections of the interior, where a fourth (crikey) screen can be seen between the strip and the centre console. This’ll be used to access the Wagoneer’s air con, and likely any other seating and temperature controls. The centre console itself has a funky cross-stitched design to it and is where you’ll find the gear selector and corresponding driving modes, including one for sand and snow. But not one specifically titled ‘that annoying stretch of the M25 where your tyres constantly feel like they’re about to burst’, unfortunately. Physical buttons are also non-existent - barring those found on the steering wheel - but Jeep seems to have done a good job of making the cabin still at least look intuitive. Other details include a 19-speaker audio system from McIntosh and a dual-pane panoramic roof as standard. We’ve also been treated to a few more exterior images, finally giving us a wider glance over the solitary front-facing shot. The sheer length of the big Jeep can now be seen, but it isn’t entirely surprising given that the Wagoneer S is built upon Stellantis’ BEV-dedicated large platform. It will also be interesting (and entertaining) to see this behemoth get from a claimed 0 to 62mph in 3.5s, courtesy of a 600bhp electric motor and four-wheel drive. Further details are expected in due course. What else you wanna know? Link
  6. The Missouri Democrat confirmed the investigation, denying any wrongdoing and saying that her campaign is "fully cooperating." WASHINGTON — Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., is being investigated by the Justice Department for her campaign's spending on security services, she confirmed in a statement Tuesday. “We are fully cooperating in this investigation,” Bush said, denying any wrongdoing. As a former Black Lives Matter organizer and high-profile progressive on Capitol Hill, Bush has faced what she called “relentless threats to my physical safety and life” since her election in 2020. "As a rank-and-file member of Congress I am not entitled to personal protection by the House, and instead have used campaign funds as permissible to retain security services," Bush continued in her statement. "I have not used any federal tax dollars for personal security services. Any reporting that I have used federal funds for personal security is simply false." The Justice Department declined to comment. DOJ had recently issued a grand jury subpoena to the House sergeant at arms for documents, a development that was made public on the House floor on Monday. But the focus of the federal probe was not revealed at that time. Bush said her campaign is cooperating with the DOJ probe. Two sources confirmed Monday night that DOJ was probing a Democratic lawmaker's use of security funds, but the member remained unidentified. PunchBowl News first reported Tuesday that Bush, who represents St. Louis, is the Democrat under investigation. Bush, who ousted longtime Rep. Lacy Clay in the 2020 Democratic primary, came under scrutiny last February when she married her security guard, Cortney Merritts, then kept him on her campaign payroll for providing security services, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Conservative watchdog groups filed at least two complaints against Bush with the Federal Election Commission. While federal law bars lawmakers from paying family members to work in their official offices, they are allowed to pay relatives for campaign work so long as “the family member is providing bona fide services to the campaign.” However, payments "in excess of fair market value" are prohibited, the law states. Bush, in her statement Tuesday, acknowledged that she retained her husband as part of her security team “because he has had extensive experience in this area, and is able to provide the necessary services at or below a fair market rate.” An NBC News review of Bush's campaign expenditures found that she has spent $756,748.42 on security since her first run for Congress in the 2018 cycle. The congresswoman accused "right-wing" opponents of lodging "baseless complaints against me," and noted that the independent Office of Congressional Ethics had investigated the matter and unanimously voted to dismiss it. However, the bipartisan House Ethics Committee has not closed the case. “I am under no illusion that these right-wing organizations will stop politicizing and pursuing efforts to attack me and the work that the people of St. Louis sent me to Congress to do: to lead boldly, to legislate change my constituents can feel, and to save lives," Bush said. The clerk publicly informed lawmakers of the subpoena request when the House opened its session Monday, but few details were provided. “This is to notify you formally pursuant to rule 8 of the rules of the House of Representatives that the office of the sergeant at arms for the House of Representatives has been served with a grand jury subpoena for documents issued by the U.S. Department of Justice,” House Reading Clerk Susan Cole said, reading a notification from House Sergeant at Arms William McFarland. “After consulting with the House General Counsel I have determined that compliance with the subpoena is consistent with the rights and privileges of the House,” McFarland's statement, read by Cole, continued. Representatives of both Republican and Democratic leaders in the House declined to comment. Asked about Bush at a leadership news conference, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., said Tuesday he had no comment and called it "something for the Justice Department." "I haven't talked to her," Aguilar said. Link
  7. One of Broadway's most celebrated stars, Chita Rivera, has died at the age of 91, her daughter said in a statement. Daughter Lisa Mordente said Rivera died peacefully in New York from a brief illness. The Tony-award winning entertainer is known for her successful theatre career spanning nearly seven decades. Some of her most notable roles include Anita in West Side Story and Rose in Bye Bye Birdie. Rivera was born in 1933 in Washington DC to a Puerto Rican father and a mother of Scottish and Irish heritage. She began her Broadway career in the 1950s, landing roles in productions like Can-Can and Mr Wonderful. In 1957, she was part of the original West Side Story cast where she played the role of Anita - a performance that paved her way to Broadway stardom. Soon after, Rivera was nominated for a Tony Award her portrayal of Rose in the musical Bye Bye Birdie alongside Dick Van Dyke. A few decades later, she starred in another iconic role: vaudeville performer Velma Kelly in Chicago. She is celebrated for being a "triple-threat" - singing, dancing and acting in numerous Broadway hits throughout the years, as well as being a trailblazer for Latina women. In 2018, Rivera was given a lifetime Tony award. She is also a recipient of a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the US, given to her by former President Barack Obama. Link
