  1. Floods hit 54 areas throughout the capital city on Tuesday, disrupting traffic and the operation of public transportation. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that thousands of houses were inundated by floodwaters reaching various levels, ranging from 10 centimeters to 150 centimeters. “The floods occur because the city’s drainage system cannot accommodate the overflowing water,” BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press release. Sutopo said the 54 areas were located in South Jakarta, East Jakarta and North Jakarta. The floods have also affected the operation of public transportation. Rail operator PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek spokesperson Eva Chairunisa said, however, that the floodwaters that had affected several stations across the city had begun to recede, and normal services could resume shortly. “However, we still have long queues at Jatinegara Station in East Jakarta due to signal disruption as a result of the inundation,” she said. Besides the capital city, Tangerang and Bekasi have also been affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.

  3. Update: iOS 10 is about to become iOS 10.3, with the new public beta 2 already in the hands of testers. We're also getting very close to iOS 11, and even have a likely beta launch date for that. Apple's iOS 10 and iOS 10.3 updates for your iPhone and iPad really live up to the milestone software version number, bringing major changes to your daily phone and tablet routine. You won't even recognize portions of the interface; that's how different things are. But don't worry, almost all of the new iOS 10 features are for the best – and absolutely free to download today. iOS 10 launched alongside watchOS 3 for the Apple Watch in September, and just before macOS for MacBook Pro 2016 in October, after they all made their big debut at WWDC 2016 in June. We've been playing with the new iPhone and iPad software since the iOS 10 beta stage, and we're still discovering new features with the new iOS 10.3 beta 1. You'll need some time to wrap your head around the new functionality of this mobile operating system, so we went ahead of broke it down for you. Here's what we've learned about iOS 10 through iOS 10.3.

Dr. Peter McGough, medical director at the University of Washington health clinic in the United States, said, as quote by the Seattle Times, that “if you have a fever over 38 degrees Celsius, or if you’re aching all over, it is a good sign to stay home”. Going to the office when you are sick is called “contagious presenteeism”, and, according to Bloomberg, it makes “the modern open office plan a breeding ground for catching illnesses”. Dr. McGough further says that workers experiencing acute symptoms of flu or any other illness need to stay at home because viruses are most contagious at their preliminary stage. However, he also said that “If they cover their mouth and wash their hands, it may be okay.” Whether you’ve caught the common cold, a burning fever or the occasional sore throat, it is better to skip work rather than infect your co-workers with germs. Dr. McGough believes that those who choose to go to work when they are ill tend to be people with “limited or unpaid sick days,” or people who feel like they will be disappointing their respective coworkers and bosses if they call in sick. Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer for Public Health in Seattle and King County in the state of Washington, also recommends self-quarantine during periods of illness and emphasizes the importance of the flu vaccine. “There are multiple respiratory viruses circulating and your current misery may be due to one of the non-influenza viruses, with the real flu still to come," he added.

  6. The police have named three suspects for allegedly slaughtering, cooking and eating an orangutan after the endangered species was caught wandering around in an oil palm concession in Kapuas regency, Central Kalimantan. Kapuas Police chief Sr. Comr. Jukiman Situmorang said on Friday that after 10 people had been taken in for questioning on Tuesday, investigators had decided to name three plantation workers, identified by their initials AY, 30, EMS, 39 and ER, 23, suspects. “They [allegedly] killed the orangutan just to consume its flesh,” said Jukiman, adding that the police would not detain the suspects because the maximum penalty for the offense was not more than five years. The case is believed to have occurred at an oil palm concession owned by PT Susantri Permai, part of Malaysian conglomerate Genting Group, in Tumbang Puroh village, on Jan. 28. The incident reportedly began when a worker was harvesting fruit before encountering and being chased by an agitated orangutan. The worker later told the story to AY who then went out to hunt down the animal, where he purportedly killed it with an air rifle and machete. The animal was then taken by AY and his two colleagues EMS and ER to a nearby camp to be dined on. “They’re just like pigs or deer, the orangutan was skinned, chopped up and cooked,” said an eyewitness who works at the plantation as a fruit harvester but refused to be named for safety reasons, on Tuesday. Jukiman said the perpetrators could face up to five years in prison if found guilty under the law on biodiversity conservation. Orangutans are under grave threat from their shrinking rainforest habitat due to illegal logging, land conversion and forest fires, as well as from poaching and climate change. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has adjusted its status for the species from “endangered” to “critically endangered”—one category before extinction. The IUCN estimates that the number of Bornean orangutans has dropped by nearly two-thirds since the early 1970s and will further decline to 47,000 by 2025. As orangutans keep losing their habitat, they are forced to roam into plantation areas in search of food, which can lead to them being killed. “That’s why orangutans enter oil palm plantations [because these areas] used to be part of their habitat,” said Yaya Rayadin, an orangutan researcher at Mulawarman University in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday. Orangutans are often deemed disruptive by palm oil companies as they like to eat leaves and young palm fruit bunches. According to research in 2006, an orangutan can destroy 30 to 50 oil palms in a day. “They are forced to eat [the fruit bunches] because they have no other options,” said Yatim, an environmental activist from Muara Wahau, East Kalimantan. Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar was said to be enraged upon receiving the report and said the ministry would work closely with the police to ensure the perpetrators faced justice.

  8. A recent study in the Circulation journal by the American Heart Association suggests that a simple ingredient on your kitchen countertop can significantly benefit your heart. The one-year study carried out on 300 people with a high risk of cardiovascular complications showed that a Mediterranean diet can catalyze the effect that HDL has on the body. HDL, defined as the good cholesterol in our body, can offset LDL—which is considered a bad cholesterol capable of causing heart disease. Doctors advise people to curb the intake of red meats, processed food and fried snacks that consist of LDL, because once the cholesterol accumulates on the walls of blood vessels, the chances of a cardiac arrest multiplies. Due to this, they believe that increasing the amount of HDL in the body is ideal. In the investigation led by Montserrat Fito from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona, participants were randomly selected to consume either a diet with a small portion of red meat and lots of vegetables and fruit or follow a Mediterranean diet that was either olive oil or nut oriented. After comparing their blood cholesterol levels before and after the experiment, researchers discovered that participants who indulged in non-Mediterranean nutrition decreased their total LDL cholesterol; however, the people who followed the two Mediterranean diets improved the functioning of their HDL. The section of people that complied with a Mediterranean diet of olive oil specifically had immensely better-working HDL. This improvement in HDL removed a greater level of LDL in their heart vessels and served as antioxidants that could cure inflammatory damage in the body that would have otherwise caused a stroke. Furthermore, the HDL could maintain the elasticity of the blood vessels, thereby reducing their sensitivity to damage. Fito states, “Our hypothesis is that all the antioxidant compounds in olive oil bind to the HDL particle and preserve [it] from oxidative stress, and that maintains the HDL in better quality”, Aside from an olive-oil based Mediterranean diet, experts also emphasize that exercise can also do the trick. But, because there are no drugs available to increase HDL levels, scientists are finding more and more natural ways to decrease chances of cardiac issues in heart patients.
  9. There are a number of unique virtual reality accessories out there. Sure, there’s your standard ones like the Oculus Touch and Vive Tracker which have very obvious applications in VR. But then you have some more nebulous products like, for example, the Kortex. The device popped up on IndieGoGo and claims to help fight anxiety, manage stress and help you sleep better after using it for 20 minutes during your next VR gameplay session. The Kortex straps onto any VR headset including the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, though it looks like the Samsung Gear VR is where it will find the most success thanks to its low-cost ticket to entry. Back the device while it’s still on IndieGoGo and you’ll receive a discounted price and a copy of the game Land’s End. We’ll let you watch the video for more specifics, but the idea here is that the Kortex uses alternating current via an electrode strapped to your temple to stimulate the production of serotonin and reduce cortisol in the brain. Two 20-minute sessions a day and its creators, a medical technology company called Fisher Wallace Labs, say you’ll be sleeping better. While we don’t put a ton of stock in faux-medical devices, there are some potentially exciting applications here – either to enhance your mood while you play games or to help you wind down and relax when you’re feeling a bit too stressed out. Less anxiety and a free copy of a game? Sign us up.

  12. Ready for a solid helping of iOS 11, Watch OS 4 and macOS update news? Then pencil in June 5 through 9, as those are the dates Apple has just confirmed for the WWDC 2017 event. The developer-focussed showcase has long been the conference at which Apple details its major software plans for the next 12 months, though sometimes it's also offered the odd hardware surprise too. Apple's invite for the 28th annual event confirms this year's WWDC will be held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, with developers able to pick up tickets form March 27 at developer.apple.com/wwdc. It's the first time in 15 years that the company has held its event at the San Jose venue, having set up shop in San Francisco's Moscone West in recent years. Developers According to Apple's press release, the event will "inspire developers from all walks of life to turn their passions into the next great innovations," with the Cupertino company specifically calling out iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Mac devices, suggesting we'll get some fresh features for each of their respective software platforms. With Apple facing increasing competition in the home tech sector from Amazon and Google with their respective Echo and Home devices, Apple will likely be pushing their HomeKit and SiriKit developer kits hard, for fear of losing ground on its quickly advancing competition.
  13. A high-profile transnational murder case in Malaysia has taken a surprising twist after local authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of two suspects, including an Indonesian woman. Malaysian authorities announced two more arrests on Thursday in connection with the death of Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, whose assassination on Monday was said to be a contract killing in broad daylight by two female assailants. Investigators are still piecing together the details of the case, including the widespread assumption that Kim Jong-un dispatched a hit squad to kill his half brother, just days after the isolated country successfully launched an allegedly nuclear-ready missile. Kim Jong-nam had lived away from North Korea for years, and was recently residing in Macau. Three suspects — two women and a man — were arrested separately on Wednesday and Thursday. The women were identified using surveillance video from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), where the victim Kim, who was 45 or 46, suddenly fell ill. Malaysian officials said he died on the way to the hospital after telling airport medical workers that he had been sprayed with a chemical, Associated Press reported. South Korean media reports, citing unidentified sources, said two women believed to be North Korean agents killed him with toxic spray before fleeing in a taxi. One female suspect had Vietnamese travel documents and was picked up on Wednesday at the KLIA budget terminal. The Royal Malaysian Police circulated press statements identifying the suspects, including 25-yearold Indonesian Siti Aisyah from Serang, Banten, and 26 year-old Muhammad Farid bin Jalaluddin, a Malaysian man that authorities identified as “the boyfriend of the second female suspect.” Siti and Farid were arrested on Thursday and will remain in custody to assist with the investigation, according to the statements. Several Indonesian officials confirmed the former’s nationality and that her documents were listed in the database of the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, but refused to say whether she had been detained for her involvement in the murder case. “The ministry never confirmed [her] involvement in the alleged assassination, as it is the sole authority of Malaysian law enforcers after they conclude the investigation,” said Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, director for the protection of Indonesian nationals and entities abroad. Iqbal added that a team from the Kuala Lumpur mission had arrived in Selangor state on Thursday evening to verify the woman’s identity. The Indonesian government has not explicitly named Siti, choosing to identify her with the acronym SI, as the legal process has yet to conclude. Meanwhile, medical workers have completed an autopsy on Kim Jong-nam, but the results have not been released. The findings could reveal whether he was indeed poisoned. North Korea had objected to the autopsy but Malaysia went ahead with it because no formal protest was submitted, said Selangor Police chief Abdul Samah Mat. Kim Jong-nam, the son of Kim Jong-il, North Korea’s previous leader who died in 2011, reportedly fell out of favor after he was caught trying to enter Japan on a false passport in 2001, saying he wanted to visit Tokyo Disneyland. He complained that Kim Jongun, the country’s new leader, had failed to treat him with respect and send him enough money, according to Cheong Seong-chang, an analyst at South Korea’s Sejong Institute. However, Kim Jong-nam refrained from openly criticizing the North and kept a low profile after Kim Jong-un ordered the execution of his uncle and former protector Jang Song-thaek, once considered the country’s secondmost powerful person, in 2013.
  14. SUVs were not originally built with elegance in mind, but Mercedes-Benz redefined the game with its G-Class cars in the early 1970s. On Monday, the German automaker announced the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet, its latest in the G-Class. Under the hood is a V12 Biturbo engine that puts out 630 horsepower, but the real luxury is inside. Mercedes has stretched the wheelbase of the previous G-Class by about 60 centimeters, then replaced the usual back seats in favor of two of the “first class” seats from its S-Class. Backseat passengers can fully recline their leather seats and keep their coffee hot and bottled water cool in thermal cup holders. Seats also include massage functions and a fully adjustable calf rest, while lighting and individual 10-inch displays can be controlled from the back. Getting into the SUV won’t be a challenge for those who have struggled before, as an electronically extending step makes getting in and out all the more simple. For more private circumstances, a partition can be raised between the front and back seats and toggled between transparent and opaque. The soft canvas top can be pulled up and over the backseat with a press of a button. Mercedes will build just 99 of the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulets, and while they have yet to announce how much they will be going for exactly, it is estimated to be at a phenomenal cost.
  15. Many Jakarta residents took advantage of special election-themed restaurant discounts after voting on Wednesday morning, although they said the cheaper food and beverages were not the main reason for them voting. Caroline, a 19-year-old student, said on Wednesday that she enjoyed free ice cream offered by a shop in Kota Kasablanka mall, South Jakarta, although she did not know about the promotion at first. "I just knew about it from my older sibling after I went to the polling station," Caroline said. Other people, like Nicholas, a 30-year-old programmer, intentionally went to the mall with his mother to enjoy the election-day holiday after casting their votes in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta. However, Nicholas said the promos were not the main reason they cast their votes. "It would be silly to vote just for free food and beverages," Nicholas said. The same thought was also shared by Mustofa, 50, from Kalibata, South Jakarta who took his family for lunch. "For us, these promotions are just complementary. We took them while they were offered. If there weren’t any promos, it would still be fine with us," Mustofa said. Meanwhile, Sundi, a 21-year-old student who was enjoying a free coffee, thought the promotions were beneficial for the election itself. "We have to show our inked fingers to get the deal. In some ways, it encourages people to cast their votes," Suni said.
  16. A recently published patent from Sony indicates the electronics giant is looking into sensors that could track its PlayStation VR headset more like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The system proposed in the patent would track the wearer's movements and location with a similar technology used in higher-end headsets, which come with projectors that 'sense' the user's location in a designated space, according to CG Mag. Currently, the PS VR utilizes a PlayStation Camera peripheral to visually track the user's head position using lights on the front of the headset. While PS VR's solution works just fine (as well as keep costs down to half that of a Vive), room-scale motion tracking would afford a more immersive experience for users and open up possibilities for what kind of games can be developed for Sony's headset. Like most patents, this is not confirmation of Sony releasing a new add-on to its VR headset. It was also not clarified if this would function as an accessory or part of some kind of successor to the original PS VR headset. That said, it's assuring to know the PlayStation purveyor isn't done coming up with ideas for the system and won't be leaving VR to wither on the vine just yet. Should PlayStation VR have any new tricks up its sleeve, we wouldn't be surprised if Sony holds off making announcements until its upcoming E3 press event. They won't be alone, either, as competitor Microsoft already has some hardware news of its own in store this summer.
  17. Those who plan to tie the knot may want to visit 2017 Bridestory Fair. Hosted by online wedding vendor directory Bridestory, the exhibition runs until Feb 12 in Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel, South Jakarta. Similar to the previous year, the 2017 Bridestory Fair features a plethora of wedding vendors, such as Svarna by Ikat Indonesia, Mel Ahyar Bride, Suryanto Decoration, Gordon Blue Wedding Cakes, Atipattra wedding photography and more. The event’s lead project coordinator, Nathalia Isadora, told The Jakarta Post that, unlike other wedding exhibitions, the 2017 Bridestory Fair was developed based on research. “We conducted research prior to the event and found what is in vogue,” she said, adding that the exhibition's green botanical theme was chosen according to the survey. The survey found that couples nowadays prefer minimalist, effortless and modern styles, leading the fair to showcase vendors that meet these preferences. “Only invited wedding vendors are allowed [participate in] the fair. We are the only curated wedding fair in Indonesia,” said Nathalia. In addition to po[CENSORED]r wedding vendors, the 2017 Bridestory Fair is also showcasing newcomers, such as Litany Handmade Jewelry, Orchid Decoration and Brownfox Stationery. “Litany is a handmade jewelry brand offering a nature-inspired collection and Orchid Decoration is still pretty new in the industry,” said Nathalia. On another note, Brownfox Stationery is showcasing because there is a demand for well-designed wedding stationery
  18. Flash floods that took place in several parts of Sambelia district in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, over the weekend have inundated residential areas and displaced around 500 people. High-intensity rainfall on Lombok Island from Friday to Saturday caused floods that cut access to some locations, the head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency's (BPBD) West Nusa Tenggara office Muhammad Rum said. BPBD data show that up to Tuesday, there were residents taking shelter in three villages in the district, namely Kolah, Darakunci and Menanga Reak. "The three locations were isolated because the bridge heading there was destroyed due to the floods," Rum said on Tuesday. Besides displacing people, the floods in Sambelia district had also damaged houses and a bridge, which cut road access. Floods had also caused a bridge to collapse in Sambelia village, while in Sugian village, a section of an embankment in the Kokok Pendek River collapsed, preventing road access, damaging an elementary school building and causing minor damages to at least 75 houses. Rum said the local stakeholders were working to manage the floods. BPBD along with the Indonesian Military (TNI), the police and the National Search and Rescue Agency had begun efforts to build emergency roads and emergency staircases for the affected areas to help facilitate aid distribution. "The joint team had also evacuated people to several shelters and established soup kitchens," he said, adding that the team had also sent out logistics aid in the form of mineral water, food, blankets, mattresses, medicine and clothes.
  19. Introduction Abundance of choice is one of the biggest challenges faced by all Linux users, particularly those dipping their toe in the water for the first time. Choosing your first Linux distro can be incredibly daunting, especially when you don't even know what you're looking for. In Linux's early days, choosing a distro was simple: you went with the one you had heard about, or the one that someone you knew had experience with, or the one with some degree of documentation. Naturally, then, you were limited in choice to the likes of RedHat, Debian, or Slackware. While you can still make a choice based on those criteria, the sheer number of Linux distros available now, and their vocal fan bases, makes it difficult to settle on one and get started. So let's ignore those voices altogether, and add one of our own. We've deliberately shied away from the mainstream distros here, as we didn't just want easy-to-use distros. Instead, we've selected four that we believe are ideal starting points. You'll note the absence of Ubuntu – yes, it has long been a Linux distribution, and one which is quite welcoming, but it isn't exactly right for beginners in our opinion. However, it can be with the right changes, which is why three of the four distros in our list are Ubuntu-based. We've also picked one that's specifically aimed at those switching from Windows – in previous years, we were also able to feature a distro that was specifically aimed at macOS users too, but it (Pear Linux) has sadly been discontinued. However, both Pinguy and Elementary contain elements that will definitely appeal to Mac switchers – Elementary, in particular, has a macOS feel. How we tested... All distros were tested on the same dual-core machine with 4GB RAM. We've selected the latest 64-bit stable releases for all the distros. The distribution also needs to be easy to install. Since most users of these distros have probably never installed Linux before, this is a very important consideration. Just as important is software management and the kind of apps that are included in the distro. Apart from these major points, the distro also needs to be easy to use for day-to-day activities. The ideal distro for newbies is one that does all of the above and also makes it easy for them to tweak some settings.

  21. The best free PC backup software Regular backups are an essential part of PC housekeeping, but one that's easy to ignore or forget. Windows includes its own backup tools, but they're not all in one convenient place, their scheduling options are limited, and they don't offer encryption or optimization. For hassle-free backups, it's worth installing a third-party program. Before we begin, it's worth understanding the different types of backups. An image is an exact copy of an entire drive or partition, including all installed programs and system files. If you need to reinstall Windows, you can boot from the image file and avoid having to reinstall all your programs and reconfigure your Windows settings. Note that you can't use an image to restore your system on a different PC. Images are very large and take a long time to create, so you won't want to make one every day. For everyday backups, you'll only want to copy the most important data on your PC – your documents, photos and music, for example. There are several types of regular backup: Full backup: a copy of all selected data. Differential backup: a copy of the data that has changed or been added since the last full backup. Incremental backup: a copy of the data that has changed since the last backup, whether that was full backup or incremental. Each differential backup will be larger than the last, but to restore your system you'll only need the full backup and the latest differential one. Incremental backup files are smaller, but to restore your system you'll need your full backup as well as all subsequent incremental ones, which takes longer. With that in mind, here's our pick of the best free backup software available to download today. 1. Easeus Todo Backup Free Easeus Todo Backup Free is a full backup suite offering both imaging (with optional creation of a Linux-based boot disc) and file backup (full, differential or incremental). It's intuitively designed and packed with advanced features, making it our backup software of choice. When you start Easeus Todo Backup Free, its Smart Backup function kicks into gear, immediately backing up your Documents directory, the favorites from your web browser and any files on your desktop. It makes a full backup once a week by default, with differential backups every half an hour if changes are detected. It's an ingenious feature that immediately takes some of the hassle out of protecting your data, and you can customize it later to back up other files if you like. It's easy to make and schedule your own custom file backups too (full, differential or incremental). Easeus has included some brilliant extra options, such as the ability to run a backup immediately on startup if one was missed while your PC was powered off, and wake it from sleep if necessary. Full system images are easy to create, and can be encrypted for extra security. You can choose a compression level (high compression takes longer, but uses less space) and split the image into chunks rather than one huge file. The Image Reserve option lets you choose when old images should be deleted or merged – another very helpful function that helps conserve drive space. There's also a superb drive-cloning tool with optional SSD optimization – brilliant if you're planning an upgrade. Easeus Todo Backup Free has a couple of limitations compared to the paid-for version: backups can't be triggered by events like logoff and shutdown, and the software won't back up and restore Outlook emails. In all other respects it's superb, and is our number one choice for protecting your system. 2. Comodo BackUp Comodo BackUp's main draw is its flexibility – you can store your backups on local or network-attached drives, an FTP server or the company's own Comodo Cloud server. The free edition comes with 10GB online storage which is free for 90 days. If you fancy keeping the cloud storage, prices start at US$7.99 (about £6, AU$11) per month for 100GB once the trial is over. The software itself is completely free if you're happy to store your data locally, though. Creating a full drive image and emergency rescue media is a simple process, though it's strange that this feature is accessed via the Settings menu rather than the dashboard. You'll need the Windows Automated Installation Kit to make an image, so make sure you've installed it first, but once that's done the process is effortless. It's strange that Comodo BackUp doesn't come with this tool already included, and that it doesn't run with admin privileges by default (essential for creating system backups). Comodo BackUp offers full, differential and incremental backups of files, directories, partitions and drives. It doesn't automatically suggest particular file types or locations to back up, instead letting you take your pick from files and directories, disks and partitions, registry files and registry entries. It's fine for users who know precisely what they should keep, but not the most intuitive system for new users. Backups can be scheduled for regular intervals and, like Easeus Todo Backup Free, Comodo BackUp lets you choose what should happen if it misses a backup. There's also support for file compression and splitting, encryption and email notifications. Interestingly, there's also a hidden tool that lets you scan for junk and malware before backing up – presumably a little add-on originating from Comodo's Internet Security suite. Comodo BackUp uses Windows' Volume Shadow Copy function to make backups while files are in use, enabling it to run quietly in the background. It's undoubtedly a powerful backup tool packed with useful functions for protecting your data, but its slightly awkward interface and lack of guidance for new users put it just behind Easeus. 3. AOMEI Backupper Standard AOMEI Backupper Standard includes a simple wizard that makes creating images straightforward, even for complete beginners. It suggests which drives to back up and where to store the resulting image – whether it's a local drive, an optical disc or network attached storage. Give the image a name (ideally including the date) so you can find it easily later, create a schedule so the process is repeated at regular intervals, and click 'Start backup'. This can take a long time, depending on the amount of data on your drive, so the option to shut down the PC automatically once it's complete it a thoughtful touch. You can then restore your system from within Windows, or by booting from the image. For day-to-day backups, AOMEI Backupper Standard lets you save whole partitions or selected directories, with a simple drop-down menu enabling you choose between full, differential or incremental backups. Again, these can be scheduled to take place at regular intervals, making it a simple set-and-forget affair. The process is incredibly straightforward, and there are also a few handy extras including password-protection and encryption to secure your data, but not as many as you'll find in Easeus and Comodo's backup software. 4. Personal Backup One-man project Personal Backup is small and easy to use, but only creates regular data backups – not images. As an indie passion-project it lacks the gloss of its commercially-driven competitors, but is nevertheless great for saving copies of your most important data. Personal Backup offers both a straightforward wizard and manual options for more advanced users. The wizard begins by asking you to select a destination for the backups. This can be local or network-attached storage, or an FTP server. The latter option is ideal for off-site backups. Next, you're prompted to select the data to be backed up, whether it should be compressed, and whether to apply encryption. It's advisable to select the option to verify your completed backups. Backups can be scheduled to take place daily, weekly, or when an event is triggered (such as logon or shutdown). The advanced tool is where things get really interesting – you can create a desktop shortcut for a backup task, enabling you to run it with a simple double-click whenever you like, decide which file types should be compressed, set filters so only files containing a certain string are backed up, and decide whether backups are full, incremental or differential. The restore options are equally detailed; you can select the type of files to be overwritten or kept, whether to keep file permissions intact, and the age of files to be restored. 5. Genie Timeline Free If you're a little daunted by the prospect of making your own backups, Genie Timeline Free is as user-friendly as they come. Its wizard (there's no manual mode for fine-tuning your backups) takes you by the hand, suggesting the drive to be used for storage and making a folder for you automatically, then showing you various file types that can be stored (emails, pictures, videos, documents, music and the contents of your desktop are selected by default). Sneakily, Genie Timeline Free lists drive images among the file types it can back up, but you can only create them using the premium version of the software. Compression and encryption are also unavailable unless you open your wallet, which pushes this otherwise great backup tool down to fifth place. Genie Timeline Free backs up your files quietly in the background – an unobtrusive approach that's welcome, but wouldn't be possible if it was creating an image. It's not mentioned in the interface, but all backups are incremental, making them as fast as possible. The restore tool is similarly straightforward – simply select the backed-up files to restore, choose where to restore them to (and whether to overwrite existing files with the same name) and click 'OK'. Uniquely, Genie Timeline Free has its own iOS app, which provides status updates on your scheduled backups. It would be handy to be able to start backups manually via the app as well, but it's a welcome addition for those of an anxious disposition, and a modern alternative to the email notifications offered by some other backup tools.
