  1. Bugatti's arresting Vision GT Concept started life as a digital design intended to appear in the Gran Turismo 6 video game, but has also appeared in physical form at IAA 2015. Based on the Le Mans-winning Type 57 heritage model, the Vision GT Concept brings with it several clues as to the design direction Bugatti will take with the upcoming successor to the Veyron. The Vision GT is designed for outright performance, eschewing the understated luxury for which Bugatti is famed. Luxury accoutrements, safety systems and anything designed to promote comfort have been eliminated in a bid to decrease weight and increase performance.

  3. Current methods for investigating UTIs rely on culturing bacteria Urinary tract infections can be treated more quickly using a new DNA sequencing device, according to research. Scientists from the University of East Anglia (UEA) say the device - the size of a USB stick - can detect bacteria directly from urine samples four times more quickly than traditional methods. The technology could lead to faster treatment and better use of antibiotics, they say. The findings were unveiled at a medical conference in San Diego. Prof David Livermore, from UEA's Norwich Medical School, said there was a need to move beyond the current "carpet-bombing" approach to treating urinary tract infections (UTIs). "The way to do so lies in accelerating laboratory investigation, so that treatment can be refined earlier, benefitting the patient, who gets an effective antibiotic, and society, whose diminishing stock of antibiotics is better managed," he said. The device can also detect resistance to antibiotics, said Dr Justin O'Grady, also from UEA's Norwich Medical School. "Swift results like these will make it possible to refine a patient's treatment much earlier - and that's good for the patient, who gets the 'right' antibiotic, and for society - which can better manage or 'steward' its limited supply of antibiotics," he said. There were still challenges to overcome as the technique only works on heavily infected urine, he added. Superbugs are now a major global health threat with multi-drug resistant bacteria causing around 400,000 infections and 25,000 deaths in Europe every year.
  4. Standing in the symbolic heart of political Cuba, Pope Francis on Sunday began his first full day in the island nation with an outdoor Mass at Revolution Plaza attended by President Raúl Castro and other leaders, even as it was unclear whether the pontiff would later meet with the country’s former leader, Fidel Castro. At Revolution Plaza, Francis arrived at about 8:30 a.m. in his familiar open-air popemobile, which moved through the crowd of thousands of people before delivering him to a covered stage for the service. Francis praised the vibrancy of the Cuban people and urged them to pursue a Christian model of selfless service. “Whatever wishes to be great must serve others, not be served by others,” Francis said during his homily. The scene blended faith, politics and revolution: Huge portraits of two revolutionary heroes, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, overlook the square, which also had large banners of Jesus and Mother Teresa. Francis was scheduled for a private meeting later in the day with President Castro — and possibly a meeting with Fidel, too. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, president of Francis’ native Argentina, also was in attendance. In such a political setting, Francis made his most directly political remarks not about Cuba but on the Colombia peace talks underway here in Havana. Francis urged negotiators for the Colombian government and the FARC rebels to find a solution and end the decades-old conflict in their country. “We do not have the right to allow ourselves yet another failure on this path of peace and reconciliation,” Francis said at the end of the Mass. Francis’s trip through Cuba offers a telling look at unique challenges, and influence, that the first Latin American pontiff has obtained in his native region. He is part rock star, part diplomat and part politician — even as his overriding priority is spiritual, and focused here on the Cuban church. His outsized profile has also lifted expectations and pressures that he takes public positions on charged issues, like political and religious freedom. Cuban dissidents are pushing for the pope to meet them. At the outdoor Mass, Francis cited the biblical story of the disciples quarreling over their importance — and Jesus’ rebuke of them — as an object lesson against “those who would be chosen for privileges, who would be above the common law, the general norm, in order to stand out in their quest for superiority over others.” A spectrum of Cubans, from the devout to the secular, turned out to see the Mass, filling the entire plaza. Waves of people cheered and snapped photographs as he passed. Whether religious or not, many Cubans cited the pope as the main force behind the recent rapprochement between their country and the United States. Andy Peraza Gonzalez, 34, a Roman Catholic, had come with his family. “I think he is a great man. A person who focuses on the real problems of the world. He’s been a great help to our country,” Mr. Gonzalez said. “The relation between Cuba and the United States gives all Cubans more hope,” he added. Several 17-year-olds said they had been instructed by their company, which makes backpacks, to attend the Mass. Like many Cubans, they admitted they were not religious but they allowed that they believed in God. One of them, Brayam Roche Barrera, said he and a friend had left home at 4 a.m. to arrive at the plaza well in advance of the crowds who had gathered for the Mass. Though the young men had been compelled to be there, all said they felt an affinity for the pope. “I mean in reality he is the most beloved man in the world.” Mr. Roche said. Like many Cubans, they could not say what, if any, profound changes might result from the papal visit, only that there seemed to be a promise of something better, including improved economic opportunities as the renewed relationship with the United States grows stronger. “It’s a year of peace between the U.S. and Cuba and we have a lot of hope,” said Yosbany Alvarez Benítez. But will things change? I don’t know.”
  5. Germany’s plan to jump-start Web-linked factories faces competition. For your job to be taken seriously in Germany, goes the joke, it should start with an “e-” and end in “-ngineering.” Yet German officials fret that for all their country’s hardware know-how, the economy is at risk in a world where software is king and factories are increasingly linked by the Internet. Worse, an effort to give German companies an edge in building the factories of the [CENSORED]ure is under threat from a similar initiative sponsored by U.S. tech companies. “There’s great concern that a Google or an Apple might master the manufacturing world,” says Heinz-Jürgen Prokop, head of development at Trumpf, a family-owned maker of metalworking machinery that’s participating in a program called Industrie 4.0. “It’s important that we try to do it ourselves while we still have the opportunity.” Industrie 4.0’s alliance of companies, academics, and political leaders was launched by the German government two years ago. The idea was to encourage the small enterprises at the heart of the economy—what Germans call the Mittelstand—to embrace new technologies. Then last year, AT&T, Cisco Systems, General Electric, Intel, and IBM set up a similar initiative called the Industrial Internet Consortium, or IIC. Both groups aim to make it easier for machines in factories throughout companies’ supply chains to communicate with one another. The goal: to reduce downtime by anticipating when a factory will have spare capacity or need replacement parts, for example. Built-in sensors will collect all manner of data to better allocate resources, helping manufacturers cut energy use by as much as 20 percent and labor costs by 25 percent, according to consultant McKinsey. At stake is the health of German manufacturing, which employs 15 million people, about a third of the workforce. By 2020, Industrie 4.0-related projects will account for half of capital investment by German manufacturers, or some $45 billion, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Globally, investment in the industrial Internet will top $500 billion a year in 2020, up from $20 billion in 2012, researcher Wikibon estimates. To avoid falling behind, the “Mittelstand must maintain contact with the customer and not lose out” to software companies that might end up with valuable market data, says Volker Treier, deputy head of the German Chambers of Commerce & Industry. “There’s great concern that a Google or an Apple might master the manufacturing world.” —Heinz-Jürgen Prokop, Trumpf development head Germany was slower than Britain to capitalize on the 18th century industrial revolution, when mechanized production was driven by steam. In what the Germans call the second industrial revolution, around the turn of the 20th century, assembly lines powered by electricity became the norm, and Germany was a trailblazer, led by companies such as Siemens. A third phase began midcentury with computer-regulated production, and the name Industrie 4.0 refers to what Germany sees as the next wave—machines talking to one another. The Germans have some advantages as that market takes off. Unlike in computing, with its standardized suite of keyboards and USB connectors, there are no dominant standards in industrial equipment. That gives the hardware makers of today—even small fry like Trumpf—an edge over giants like Google or Apple. To seize that opportunity, Trumpf last year quadrupled its coding staff, to about 25. “We recognized that we needed far greater IT expertise,” Prokop says. “We needed to be able to analyze data.” For all of Germany’s concern about maintaining its edge in the new industrial economy, Industrie 4.0 acts primarily as a cheerleader and offers little in the way of financial help. Politicians and labor representatives have a strong hand in setting the group’s agenda, which focuses mostly on sponsoring research at top universities. $500b Projected global investment in the industrial Internet in 2020, up from $20 billion in 2012 The U.S.-dominated IIC, by contrast, coordinates trials of new technologies. It says it has launched 11 experiments, such as a system to track handheld tools to ensure they’re used effectively and a 100-gigabit-per-second network to connect machinery. Although the group hasn’t tallied total investment, GE alone says it’s spent $1 billion on industrial Internet projects in the past four years. IIC, which has grown to 200 members, including Japan’s Hitachi and even Germany’s SAP and Siemens, then shares its results. “The big difference is that Industrie 4.0 is driven by the government and is unmistakably part of industrial policy,” says Krzysztof Bledowski, director of economic studies at the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity & Innovation in Arlington, Va. The IIC “is already getting together to do joint experiments.” While the IIC appears to be out in front, Germany’s approach could lead to greater progress down the line as the adoption of greater connectivity in manufacturing could take decades, says Rainer Glatz, who leads Industrie 4.0 projects at the VDMA German machine makers’ association. “In the U.S. they want to make lots of small steps as quickly as possible,” Glatz says. “In Germany, the effort is far more theoretical: Find the model first and then move toward implementation.” The bottom line: A German program to bolster its manufacturers is at risk of being eclipsed by a similar U.S.-led initiative.

  11. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI6L2xy8WIc Mission E concept accelerates faster than the 911 sports car Porsche concept car features gesture control, holograms Porsche unveiled a four-seat sports car that accelerates faster than the 911 and charges in just 15 minutes, challenging Tesla Motors Inc. to keep pace. The Mission E concept reaches 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour in 3.5 seconds, beating the 4.2 seconds for the new generation of the 911. The 600-horsepower electric car has a range of more than 500 kilometers and can recharge the battery to 80 percent capacity in about 15 minutes, Matthias Mueller, head of the Volkswagen AG unit, said at the International Auto Show in Frankfurt. Tesla’s Supercharger needs about 30 minutes to recharge the Model S to about 270 kilometers of range. A Porsche Mission E hybrid automobile. Porsche and sister unit Audi are among the elite car brands shifting into battery-powered models as Tesla develops into a viable competitor. Deliveries of the U.S. electric-car maker’s second vehicle, the Model X crossover, will start later this month, and a more affordable auto is also on its way. The company run by billionaire Elon Musk received glowing reviews for the acceleration and handling of the Model S, a blow to traditional high-end brands. Porsche’s electric car, which is due to reach the market within five years, will be “better than a Tesla,” Mueller said in an interview on Tuesday. “We respect all competitors, also Tesla, and that is the reason why we have taken a close look at the Model S as well as at every BMW, Mercedes or something else,” said Mueller. Tesla “did a very good job, especially in terms of connectivity. Some things about the car itself could be better, but OK. That is our competition.” HologramsThe Mission E concept uses an 800-volt electric system, double the voltage of other vehicles. That helps reduce charging times and lowers weight, Porsche said. To assist in operating the vehicle, the car features eye-tracking and gesture-control functions, which include holograms that allow the driver to grab apps out of the air, according to the carmaker. While the new electric vehicle would be Porsche’s seventh model line, the Stuttgart, Germany-based manufacturer isn’t abandoning its roots. At the Frankfurt auto show, Porsche introduced a new generation of the 911 sports car. The model features bi-turbo engines that generate at least 370 horsepower. Porsche plans to sell more than 200,000 vehicles for the first time this year, driven by demand for the $52,600 Macan compact SUV. Tesla targets 50,000 to 55,000 deliveries in 2015.

  13. Smokers who quit could lower their risk of type 2 diabetes in the long term, research suggests. The data, from almost six million people, adds to growing evidence that smoking and type 2 diabetes are linked. If the link is proven, efforts to reduce smoking could have a big impact on tackling diabetes worldwide, say researchers. An international team pulled together data from 88 studies on smoking risk and type 2 diabetes. They found that current smokers had about 1.4 times the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with non-smokers. Although the risk of diabetes went up slightly (to about 1.5 times) for several years after quitting smoking, it fell to about 1.2 times after five years of not smoking. Commenting on the research, published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal, Prof Naveed Sattar, of the University of Glasgow, called on doctors to mention smoking as a risk factor for diabetes. "They should mention that, as well as being a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and many cancers, smoking should also be regarded as a risk factor for diabetes (albeit with a small effect relative to, for example, lung cancer)," he said. No causal linkThe research adds to evidence of a link between smoking and type 2 diabetes, but does not prove that smoking directly causes it. The experts estimate that 12% of global diabetes cases in men and 2% in women could be due to cigarette smoking, if a causal link were proven. Dr Richard Elliott, of the charity Diabetes Research UK, said it was important to stress that people with diabetes were at increased risk of cardiovascular complications, so smoking was even more harmful for people with diabetes than for people without the condition. "So the strong advice is that if you smoke, whether or not you have diabetes, giving up is the single most important thing you can do for your [CENSORED]ure health," he said.
  14. PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Taliban militants shot and killed 16 people in a mosque at an air force base near this city in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, military officials said, in the first major assault on a Pakistani military installation this year. At least 13 attackers were killed in an intense firefight at the base, said Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa, a spokesman for the Pakistani Army. Several people were wounded in the mosque attack, and an army captain was killed fighting the militants, he said. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the dawn attack at the sprawling Badhaber air base, saying that 14 militants had taken part. A video released by the group showed a Taliban commander, Omar Mansoor, saying goodbye to fighters said to have been the ones who stormed the base. The commander is believed to have been behind the massacre of more than 140 people, most of them children, at an army school in Peshawar in December. The attack Friday was the first major Taliban assault on a Pakistani military base since then. The Badhaber base, about four miles west of Peshawar, was built by the United States in the late 1950s to intercept Soviet communications and as a base for reconnaissance flights, but it is now a training and residential facility, according to a security official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the news media. “There are residential quarters and a mess for the airmen and a school,” the official said. General Bajwa, the army spokesman, had said in an earlier statement that seven or eight militants had tried to break into the Badhaber base and that they had been “contained and surrounded.” But the military later said that 13 attackers had been killed. It released photos of five militants lying in pools of blood within the base. Rescue workers said that 20 people had been wounded and taken to hospitals in Peshawar. “We are collecting details,” said Riaz Khan Mahsud, a local official.
