As such, their OEM partners which include ASUS & ACER will also be showcasing next-gen designs that will feature the new product stack. ASUS is already working on a range of laptops within its ROG lineup while ACER will be offering top of the line Nitro series with Zen 3 and Ampere action! SUS ROG STRIX Laptops With AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX 8 Core CPU & NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU The ASUS ROG STRIX 2021 lineup will be featuring AMD CPUs as high up as the Ryzen 9 5900HX. There will also be laptops featuring other Ryzen 9 5900H and Ryzen 7 5800H CPUs but this is the most high-end configuration you will be able to get hands-on. Coming to the specifications, the laptop will rock the Ryzen 9 5900HX which is brand new Zen 3 cores that we have seen on the desktop Ryzen 5000 lineup and as such, we can expect some huge gains in single-thread processor performance. Specifications wise, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX will be offering 8 cores and 16 threads. The chip will feature 16 MB of L3 cache and 4 MB of L2 cache. The base clock for the chip is rated at 3.30 GHz & the boost clock is rated at 4.70 GHz. A detailed log of the benchmark run shows that all cores were hitting 4.70 GHz during the test. Other features of the chip include an enhanced Vega GPU and also overclocking support which would be a first for AMD on the notebook segment. The graphics side will include NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 3080 mobility graphics card. This card is actually based on the GA104 GPU and while the exact configuration remains unknown, we know that the chip will feature up to 16 GB of GDDR6 memory while standard configurations will adopt 8 GB GDDR6 memory. The ROG STRIX laptops can also be configured with RTX 3060 & 3070 GPUs. A list of other specifications is also listed such as up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory and 1 TB of storage (SSD). ACER Nitro 5 Laptops With AMD Ryzen 7 5800H 8 Core CPU & NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU Moving on to the ACER Nitro series, the ACER Nitro 5 was recently listed by a German retailer for a price of 1950 Euros. The configuration included an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 discrete graphics card, 32 GB DDR4 memory, and 1 TB of SSD storage. The laptop will get the 8 GB RTX 3080. Other specifications listed include a 180W power supply which might indicate that this specific model is running the NVIDIA Max-Q configuration and not the Max-P which offers higher clocks, allowing for more performance. This is because the CPU alone has a base TDP of 45W with the graphics chip rocking around a 100-120W TDP.
  3. Game Information Initial release date: March 13, 2019 Designer: Arvi Teikari Engine: Multimedia Fusion 2 Developers: Hempuli Oy, Arvi Teikari, MP2 Games Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Classic Mac OS, Linux, Microsoft Windows Publishers: Hempuli Oy, Arvi Teikari I know, it’s a doozy. We can work through this one together slowly. In the first stage, we see a white rabbit — the baba — and a yellow flag. They are separated by three rocks and sandwiched between two stone walls. Also on the stage are its rules: Baba Is You, Flag Is Win, Wall Is Stop, Rock Is Push. Since “Baba Is You,” I can control the bunny. Since Rock Is Push, the bunny can push aside the rocks. And since the Flag Is Win, I can touch the flag to complete the stage. Or I can modify the rules written on the stage to complete the puzzle another way entirely. Every word on the screen is a movable tile. So, as the Baba, I can push the “Win” tile around the stage, changing “Rock Is Push” to “Rock Is Win.” Now I can complete the puzzle by touching the rock. Or, I can change “Wall Is Stop” to simply “Wall Is” by pushing “Stop” out of the sentence. Now the two stone walls can’t stop me, so my baba is free to walk through them. Or, I can swap the “Baba” and “Flag” tiles to become the flag, since the statement would then read “Flag is You.” And, as the flag, I can move around the puzzle, shifting the tiles to say “Baba Is Win.” I can then touch the immobile baba to complete the stage. Here’s a made-up example using the game’s language: Say that a deadly river separates me from the victory flag. On my side of the river are the words “Water Is Sink” and “Rock Is Push And Float.” I can’t push the rock because it’s literally floating in the air. That’s OK; I don’t need the rock. I need the rules that apply to the rock. If I rearrange the stage’s rules to read “Water Is Sink And Float,” the deadly river will float above my head, allowing me to scamper beneath it to the flag on the other side. System Requirements OS: Windows 7 Processor: 2.0 GHz+, 32-bit Memory: 1 GB RAM Graphics: ATI Radeon X1300/NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT/Intel HD 3000 or better Storage: 200 MB available space Sound Card: Intel High Definition Audio.
  4. The lightweight M5 “Competition Sport” is coming soon with an even more powerful twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. BMW has announced specifications for the upcoming 2021 M5 CS. It'll make 626 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. The CS will be 154 pounds lighter than the 617-hp M5 Competition, and it'll be revealed next month. The 2021 BMW M5 sedan is getting a more powerful lightweight CS or "Competition Sport" model based on the 617-hp M5 Competition that will join the existing M2, M3, and M4 CS in the Competition Sport lineup. It'll be 154 pounds lighter and the most powerful M5 to date, producing 626 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged V-8. BMW hasn't shared full details on the car yet—more info is coming next month—but we now know it'll have bronze trim on the grille, wheels, and badging as well as motorsport-inspired yellow headlights. Carbon-fiber bucket seats from the new M3 and M4 are also on board. The CS will come standard equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes with red calipers, and the bronze wheels will be wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber in a staggered setup with 275-width front tires and 285-width rear tires. The M5 CS will be the most powerful 5-series of all time, producing 626 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. We assume the M5 CS will have the same standard all-wheel-drive system with a rear-wheel-drive drift mode and eight-speed automatic transmission as in other models. In our testing, a 2019 M5 Competition launched to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds on its way to a 10.9-second quarter mile at 130 mph, making it one of the quickest sedans we've ever tested. We'll know more details about the most powerful M5 next month, and it should arrive in the U.S. by the end of 2021. BMW is updating the M5 and M5 Competition for the 2021 model year, and they'll get the same recent changes as the 2021 5-series sedan. The 2021 M5 and M5 Competition are powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 that produces 600 horsepower in the standard M5 and 617 horsepower in the M5 Competition. Pricing starts at $104,495 for the standard M5, while the Competition model costs $111,095. They'll arrive to U.S. dealerships in August. When it comes to four-door sedans with supercar performance, we think of the BMW M5 as the segment's godfather. Launched in the mid-1980s, the original E28 M5 shoehorned the M1 engine into a regular 5-series for a top speed exceeding 150 mph. Now in its sixth generation, the current M5 enters the second half of its life cycle. For the 2021 model year, the M5, and the even more powerful M5 Competition, mirror the changes to the standard 5-series sedan—and add a few performance upgrades, too. There is a new and larger 12.3-inch touchscreen display to the right of the instrument cluster, the cloud-based navigation system works faster and better, and the infotainment system now features Android Auto capability while also keeping Apple CarPlay functionality.
  5. (CNN)Nearly half a million residents in the Chinese city where the novel coronavirus first emerged may have been infected with Covid-19 -- almost 10 times its official number of confirmed cases, according to a study by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study used a sample of 34,000 people in the general po[CENSORED]tion in Wuhan -- the original epicenter of the pandemic -- and other cities in Hubei province, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, and the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangsu, Sichuan and Liaoning to estimate Covid-19 infection rates. The researchers found an antibody prevalence rate of 4.43% for Covid-19 among residents in Wuhan, a metropolis of 11 million people. As of Sunday, Wuhan had reported a total of 50,354 confirmed cases of Covid-19, according to the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission. The study aimed to estimate the scale of past infections in a po[CENSORED]tion by testing blood serum samples from a pool of people for coronavirus antibodies. Its findings are not taken to be final statistics of how many people in a given area have been exposed to the virus. The Chinese CDC said the study was conducted a month after China "contained the first wave of the Covid-19 epidemic." The prevalence rate outside of Wuhan is significantly lower, the study showed. In other cities in Hubei, only 0.44% of residents surveyed were found to have coronavirus antibodies. Outside the province, antibodies were only detected in two people among the more than 12,000 residents surveyed. The results of the study were revealed in a Chinese CDC post on social media Monday. It did not mention whether the study has been published in academic journals. Underreported coronavirus infections Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the study points to a problem of underreporting in infections during the height of the outbreak in Wuhan, partly due to the chaos at the time and a failure to include asymptomatic cases in the official count of confirmed cases. In January and February, patients with fevers flooded Wuhan's hospitals, which lacked the manpower, testing kits and medical resources to diagnose and treat them. Instead, many were told to go home and self-isolate -- some ended up infecting other family members, while others died at home without being recorded in the Covid-19 death tolls. Underreporting is a problem faced by health authorities in many countries, often due to a lack of capacity and resources. Antibody studies conducted by researchers in other parts of the world also show the coronavirus was much more prevalent than official numbers suggest. A study sponsored by the New York State Department of Health, for example, showed that by the end of March, one in seven New York adults had Covid-19 -- about 10 times higher than the official account. In August, another study found coronavirus antibodies in more than 27% of the 1.5 million New York City residents tested. But in China, there is also the question of transparency, as officials gave the public more optimistic data than they had access to internally. Since February 12, Hubei health authorities started to include "clinically diagnosed cases" in the count of confirmed infections. On that day, some 13,000 previously undisclosed "clinically diagnosed cases" in the province were added to new confirmed infections, resulting in a nine-fold increase in daily cases from the previous day. Leaked documents from the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention presented earlier to CNN by a whistleblower showed prior to that day, authorities had reported "clinically diagnosed cases" internally, but did not reveal them to the public. Hubei authorities also publicly reported a lower count of confirmed cases and deaths on February 10 and March 7 than they recorded internally, the documents showed. Authorities have also cracked down on citizen journalists who reported on the harsh reality of overflowing hospitals in Wuhan. On Monday, Zhang Zhan, a former lawyer who documented the outbreak at its height in Wuhan, was sentenced to four years in jail for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble." Two other independent journalists -- Li Zehua and Fang Bin -- were also detained following their coverage of the outbreak. Effective containment in Wuhan The study highlights a huge contrast between the coronavirus antibody prevalence rates inside and outside of Wuhan. Huang said the significantly lower rates in other Chinese cities suggest "Chinese containment efforts were indeed speedy and effective, especially compared to cities like New York." In an unprecedented bid to contain the rapidly spreading virus, Wuhan was sealed off from the outside world on January 23, with all flights, trains and buses canceled, and highway entrances blocked. Inside the city, the government imposed a draconian lockdown. For more than two months, public transport in Wuhan was suspended, businesses were shut and millions of residents were confined to their homes and residential communities -- not even allowed to go outside for grocery shopping. However the 76-day lockdown came at a huge cost to residents, especially those who needed to go to the hospital, as all public transport was suspended and there weren't enough taxis available to patients. Nevertheless, the sweeping measures have been heralded by the Chinese government as having allowed the country to turn a corner in its fight against the outbreak. The Chinese CDC, meanwhile, also highlighted China's victory in containing the virus when releasing the antibody study results on Monday. "The results of the study show that our country's po[CENSORED]tion has a low infection rate. It indicates that China has succeeded in controlling the epidemic with Wuhan as the main battlefield, and effectively controlled the large-scale spread of the epidemic," the agency said.
  6. While talking about beaches, most people probably imagine themselves roasting in the sun, splashing about in the water or sipping a cocktail at a bar. But the beach has more to it than the usual fun-and-sun related activities. Did you know that… #1 Brazil boasts the longest uninterrupted sandy beach in the world. The southernmost beach — Praia do Cassino — runs for 212 kilometers (132 mi) to 254 kilometers (158 mi), depending on different sources. #2 Australia’s Whitehaven Beach is the world’s most po[CENSORED]r and Instagrammed beach spot at the moment. However, this sandy beauty is only accessible by helicopter, seaplane or a boat. #3 The white sand that almost always invites you to kick your shoes off and let it run through your toes is actually just fish excrement. It’s produced by parrotfish by nibbling on coral. It’s not able to metabolize the coral and it then ends up back in the sea. Surprisingly, one parrotfish can produce up to 100 kg of sand a year. #4 After several failed attempts, an international team of sculptors and technicians finished the world’s biggest sandcastle in June 2019 in Binz, Germany. The completion of the castle required some 11,000 tons of sand but the team managed without using any internal structural support. With its 17.65 m (57 ft 1 1 in) and 26 meters in diameter, the castle has made earned its place as the tallest sandcastle in the Guinness World Records. #5 Thinking back to times of ships still conquering the world, a beach was hardly a fun place to be. A real change came in about the 18th century when people started appreciating the healing powers of fresh air and sea bathing. During the Industrial Revolution in Britain, for example, factory workers were seen as strong while the upper class of society was regarded as rather fragile. Therefore, doctors would often prescribe visiting the beach to cure many ailments. #6 Surfing was reportedly first observed by Europeans on a ship in Tahiti. It dates back to ancient Polynesian cultures of which it was an important part rather than just a hobby. The best riders would gain the most respect in their respective communities. #7 A way of not getting your smartphone wet when visiting the beach would be to opt for a message in a bottle. You might have to wait quite long for a reply, though. In some cases, even a few centuries long. In 1784, seaman Chunosuke Matsuyama dropped one such bottle on an island in the Pacific. It was only found in 1935, or 151 years later, in Japan. #8 Allegedly, every one in three people who visit a beach can’t swim. #9 It’s hardly a surprise that Australia has the largest number of beaches — over 10,000 of them! But to be fair, Russia has the largest coastline but most of it faces the Arctic so not much chance of enjoying a sunny day at the beach there.

  11. Symptoms and severity Will most people who get COVID-19 get very sick or die? FACT: Most people who get COVID-19 will have a mild form of the illness and recover without needing professional medical care. Around eight out of every 10 people with COVID-19 will have mild symptoms. Around one in six people will become severely ill and need hospital care. Scientific modelling suggests that around 1 in 100 people who get COVID-19 will die. Can you always tell if someone has COVID-19? FACT: No The virus can be in someone’s body for up to 14 days before they get symptoms, and some people will have such a mild case of COVID-19 that they might not notice that anything is wrong. That’s why it’s important that everyone follows government advice – including hand washing, using tissues to catch coughs and sneezes, and avoiding crowds – to stop the spread of the virus, even if they feel healthy. Who’s at risk? Can Black and African people get COVID-19? FACT: Anyone can get COVID-19, regardless of race or skin colour. Older people and people with other health conditions, such as asthma, heart diseases and diabetes, are more at risk of getting seriously ill. Does COVID-19 only affect old people, meaning young people don’t have to worry? FACT: While COVID-19 can be more dangerous in older people, anyone can get it including young people, some of whom become seriously ill. While we don’t yet fully understand why some people get more serious symptoms, we do know that young people are more likely to develop serious symptoms if they have certain underlying health conditions, for example asthma, heart conditions or untreated HIV. Are people living with HIV more likely to get seriously ill? FACT: If you are living with HIV and on effective treatment there's no evidence that you are at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 symptoms. This is because your treatment will be keeping your immune system strong and your body able to deal with infections. If you are worried that you might have HIV, now is a good time to get tested so you can start treatment if you need it. Prevention, treatment and cure Will antiretroviral treatment (ART) for HIV stop me getting COVID-19? FACT: There is no evidence that taking anti-HIV drugs will stop you getting COVID-19. Although some ART drugs are being trialled for use to treat COVID-19, there is no evidence yet that they are effective for this purpose. If you are living with HIV and taking treatment it’s important that you follow the general advice to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Keep taking your treatment to ensure your immune system stays strong. You shouldn’t share your HIV drugs with anyone else who has COVID-19 or is worried about getting it. These should only be taken if prescribed by a doctor. Can COVID-19 spread in warm sunny weather? FACT: COVID-19 can survive temperatures higher than 25C. You can catch it no matter how sunny and warm it is. So, whatever the weather you should follow the official advice to protect yourself from the virus. Getting out into the sunshine, if you can, is still a good idea as this helps your body produce vitamin D which is important for your immune system. Will drinking lots of hot drinks stop COVID-19? FACT: There is no drink hot or cold that will protect you from COVID-19 or cure the illness. So far, there’s no proven cure for COVID-19 but most people recover by themselves. Taking paracetamol, drinking lots of liquids, and getting enough rest can help you manage your symptoms. Should I use a strong disinfectant to clean my hands and body to protect myself from COVID-19? FACT: You shouldn’t use strong disinfectant to clean your body. Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water or rubbing an alcohol-based sanitizer on them will stop the virus spreading. Using stronger chemicals on your skin can be dangerous. Never drink disinfectant or hand sanitizer as this can do serious damage. Can Chloroquine cure COVID-19? FACT: At the moment there is no proven cure for COVID-19, but most people will recover on their own without needing professional medical care. If you think you have COVID-19 and are having difficulty breathing, contact your local health facility as you will need professional medical care. As scientists and doctors continue their work to understand and treat COVID-19 our knowledge of, and ability to treat and prevent the virus will improve. For now, it’s important to follow official government advice and get information only from reliable sources like Avert.org, the World Health Organization (WHO) or your government’s health department.
  12. (CNN)President Donald Trump's dark mood is worsening -- and the country is suffering his wrath. Furious at Senate Republican leaders for acknowledging he lost to President-elect Joe Biden, Trump has so far rejected the coronavirus stimulus package they negotiated with Democrats and his own administration, leaving jobless benefits to lapse for millions of Americans and embarrassing his onetime political allies. Convinced social media companies helped rig the election against him, he vetoed an unrelated defense bill because it didn't repeal those companies' liability protections. Insistent his own government is working against him by ignoring false claims of voter fraud, he's dangling the prospect of shutting it down as he enjoys a winter holiday in South Florida and the country records its deadliest month since the pandemic's start with more than 63,000 Americans having died from Covid-19 in December so far. Eager to help discredit investigations into his own behavior and that of his allies, he's using his wide-reaching clemency powers to wipe away convictions brought by special counsel Robert Mueller, undermining a system of law and order in the process. Long driven by grievance, Trump seems to be ensuring no grudge goes unpunished before he leaves office. He is using his remaining days as President to settle scores, even if those left to suffer have nothing to do with his baroque conspiracies or his wounded ego. Because Trump refused to sign the Covid-19 relief bill -- that his own aides helped write -- by Saturday night, millions of Americans who were facing their last payment are left without certainty of if or when they'll receive more assistance. An estimated 12 million Americans who have been laid off are set to receive their final unemployment payment for the week ending this weekend, according to The Century Foundation. The legislation that Trump refuses to sign would extend the number of weeks people can stay on two key pandemic unemployment programs and increase weekly benefits by $300 for all through mid-March. Trump this weekend continued to demand direct payment checks be increased from $600 to $2,000 -- a figure Democrats support but that came a day after the bill passed and Congress left town, leaving jobless Americans in limbo. That Trump did not make his demands known ahead of time suggests both that he was paying little attention to how the legislation was proceeding and that lines of communication with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill have degraded after they acknowledged Biden's win. "It wasn't clear that the President really was paying attention because he had a lot of other things going on," Rep. Don Beyer, a Virginia Democrat, said on CNN's "Newsroom" Saturday. Those other things have primarily focused on his unsuccessful attempts to overturn the election, which have gained little traction. Initially supportive of Trump's efforts to challenge the results in court, Senate Republican leaders have mostly moved on to congratulate Biden on his win, enraging Trump and sending him looking for ways to exact revenge. His refusal thus far to sign the stimulus package has been viewed by at least some Republican officials as doing just that, jabbing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as stingy for not providing adequate checks to Americans, even though Trump's own negotiators initially proposed the $600 checks during talks. On Saturday, Trump lashed out at McConnell, writing on Twitter that Senate Republicans "do NOTHING" to help bolster his baseless fraud allegations. He referred to the Senate majority leader simply as "Mitch" and did little to counteract the impression his fixation on the election is clouding any real attempt at governing. In another tweet, he made a reference to large protests expected in Washington on January 6 surrounding formal ratification in Congress of Biden's electoral victory, an event Trump is convinced can be stopped with help from conservatives and his vice president. Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Sunday deemed that idea "a scam." The Illinois Republican told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" that he expects when Congress meets to affirm Biden's Electoral College win that "it is going to disappoint the people that believe this election was stolen -- that think this is an opportunity to change it." And Kinzinger told Bash that if Trump wanted $2,000 stimulus checks included in the relief bill he should "negotiate that from the beginning." "Let's have the discussion after this bill is signed, because, right now, we're at a point where people are left out in the dark. But to play this old switcheroo game, which is just kind of like, I don't get the point," he continued. "I don't understand what's being done, why, unless it's just to create chaos and show power and be upset because you lost the election. Otherwise, I don't understand it, because this just has to get done. Too many people are relying on this. We have worked hard. We should have had this done a lot earlier. And now to be put in a lurch, after the President's own person negotiated something that the President doesn't want, it's just -- it's surprising." Pardon power Trump has now pardoned four associates -- including friend Roger Stone and onetime campaign chairman Paul Manafort -- who were brought down by the Mueller investigation, which Trump has complained was an illegal effort to delegitimize his presidency. His other pardons last week, including for four Blackwater security guards convicted of massacring civilians in Iraq, also appear designed to undercut a system of justice that Trump believes has failed him. The damage for both those who investigated and prosecuted the cases, as well as those who risked everything to testify in them, is great. "It's crushing. There's no other way to describe it," said Andrew McCabe, the former deputy FBI director who has been attacked by Trump and is now a CNN contributor, on Saturday, singling out the Blackwater case in particular.

While a certain crime-fighting superhero might enjoy a Bentayga Batmobile by Mulliner for a spot of luxury, instead of a customised SUV, Bentley is installing bird and bat boxes for these crucial residents of the British countryside to live in around the fringes of its Crewe factory. Since Autocar figured building a bat box would prove marginally easier than making a luxury grand tourer, and to find out why a car firm was branching out into wildlife accommodation, we headed to the factory to help out. Spoiler alert: we weren’t much help. The idea for the bird and bat boxes came from Andrew Robertson, Bentley’s long-time head of site planning. A motor industry veteran, Robertson has driven Bentley’s push to increase sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of its Crewe plant. But while it seems every car firm is trumpeting just that in 2020, it’s something he’s been pursuing for more than two decades. That’s demonstrated by the certificates hanging on the factory walls to show the plant has achieved catchily titled ISO 14001 and 50001 environmental standards and a PAS 2060 carbon-neutral certification (for those without an intimate knowledge of such things, these two are pretty good, apparently), and by the various measures around the site designed to make building luxury cars as green as it can realistically be. Bentley has made Crewe CO2-neutral – meaning any CO2 produced is reduced and offset – thanks to the efforts of Robertson and his team. These include switching the factory to a green energy mix, the use of biogas and the installation of 30,000 solar panels – 20,000 on the factory roof and 10,000 in the car park, giving a capacity of 7.7MW. He’s recently started rainwater harvesting and is finding ways to use food waste from the staff canteen. Even so, Robertson wanted to do more. “We started looking into biodiversity,” he says. “We’re a semi-industrial site, and there’s a limit to what we can do, but we felt supporting wildlife was important.” That meant more bird boxes – with a decision to place them closer to the more po[CENSORED]ted areas of the site in the hope more people could see them – and the expansion into bat boxes. For those wondering, a bat box is similar to the bird-based version, except instead of having a small round hole in the front big enough for a tit to squeeze through, they’re accessed by slots in the bottom, while inside, at the top, there’s a handy pole from which the bats can hang. This is where Autocar wanted to get involved with a bit of bat box building. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that for two reasons. The first is that Bentley currently buys in its bird and bat boxes, with only limited assembly required. Yes, in true car industry fashion, platform sharing exists even within the world of artificial roosts. But, of course, Bentley isn’t satisfied with that, so the boxes pass through its wood shop for a touch-up from expert carpenters who spend most of their time honing exquisite dashboards and other items for the interior of grand tourers.

  15. Here's what you need to know about the coronavirus right now: Singapore confirms first case of new coronavirus variant Singapore confirmed its first case of the new coronavirus variant found in the United Kingdom, while 11 other people who were already in quarantine returned preliminarily positive results for the new strain. Singapore has been conducting viral genomic sequencing for recently arrived confirmed COVID-19 cases from Europe. The patient with the new variant came to Singapore from the UK on Dec. 6, had been quarantined on arrival and tested positive on Dec. 8. All her close contacts had been placed in quarantine, and had tested negative at the end of their quarantine period. The health ministry said it had been able to ringfence the case so that there was no further transmission. Early success leaves South Korea scrambling After a summer of touting South Korea's approach as a model for the world, officials acknowledge the success of earlier efforts helped fuel over-confidence that left them straining to contain a third wave and scrambling to defend a cautious vaccine timeline. Frontline fighters in South Korea's war against the virus outlined what they say were critical mistakes by the government, including not investing in enough manpower and training for the tracing programme, not mobilising private hospitals fast enough to free up more beds, indecisive social distancing policies, and adopting a slow approach to securing and rolling out vaccines. Lim Seung-kwan, chief of Gyeonggi Province's COVID-19 emergency response task force, said it was time to consider dropping mass tracing in favour of more targeted epidemiological surveys that seek to better understand specific patterns of the virus' spread while freeing up trained medical personnel to provide patient care. U.S. vaccine rollout slow, could hit snags Millions of COVID-19 vaccines are sitting unused in U.S. hospitals and elsewhere a week into the massive inoculation campaign, putting the government's target for 20 million vaccinations this month in doubt. That's nine days to give out nearly 19 million shots or over 2 million people vaccinated a day including on Christmas Day. Hospitals said the first COVID-19 vaccinations started slowly last Monday as they navigated preparing the previously frozen shots for use, finding employees to run the vaccination clinics, and ensuring proper social distancing both before and after vaccination. Some said they did only about 100 shots the first day. Beginning in January or February, Americans employed in a range of industries will be eligible for inoculation, provided they are essential frontline workers. The absence of a plan to verify vaccine candidates' jobs and confusion over who qualifies as essential raise the risks of fraud and disorganization. COVID-19 death rates improving in U.S. hospitals The U.S. health care system is getting better at caring for COVID-19 patients, according to a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine on Tuesday. When researchers analyzed insurance claims of COVID-19 patients in nearly 400 hospitals, they found the average death rate had fallen to 9.3% in the May-June period, from 16.6% in the January-April period. "The strongest determinant of improvements in hospital-level outcome was a decline in community rates of infection," the researchers wrote, adding that the association between community COVID-19 case loads and death rates "suggests hospitals do worse when they are burdened with cases and is consistent with imperatives to flatten the curve." (Compiled by Karishma Singh; editing by Richard Pullin) What do we know about the new UK variant so far? B.1.1.7, as it is known, has 17 mutations compared with the original SARS-CoV-2 virus first discovered in Wuhan, China, including eight that may change the shape of the outer spike protein. Many of these mutations have been found before, but to have so many in a single virus is unusual. It was first sequenced in the UK on 20 September, but only caught the attention of scientists on 8 December, when they were looking for reasons for the rapid growth of cases in south-east England. On 14 December, the UK’s health minister, Matt Hancock, told parliament that a new variant that seems to spread faster had been identifie The latest estimate is that it was 50 per cent more transmissible than other circulating strains during England’s latest lockdown, according to Neil Ferguson at Imperial College London, another committee member. However, it isn’t clear if this figure is true more generally, he says. B.1.1.7 is already responsible for 80 per cent of infections in London.
