  5. Game Informations: Developer & Publisher: Days of Wonder Genre: Occasionnel, Stratégie Platforms: Windows Release date: 27 Nov.2019 MSRP : 6,99$ Thrift Treasure: Gang of Four It’s always exciting for me to find a hobby game at our local Goodwill. And when I use the term “hobby game”, I’m referring to those you cannot find for sale at Walmart or Target. They’re typically games you either order online or pick up at your FLGS (friendly local game store). Of course you can’t beat the prices at thrift, so this copy of Gang of Four by Days of Wonder hit our cart faster than you can say “half-price day”! In the case of Gang of Four, I also learned a little bit of gaming history in the process. Descended from Dai Di, the most infamous of backstreet Hong Kong gambling games, it adds an appropriate Asian theme to a game which is normally played with a standard deck of playing cards. Many games have what we refer to as a “catch-up mechanism”. Meaning that although you fall behind early in the game there is still a way for you to catch up to the leader and possibly win. Gang of Four discards that premise and does the opposite – it rewards you for being in the lead and punishes those who are lagging! The 64-card deck includes three 20-card suits numbered from 1-10 twice. The remaining four cards are made up from a multi-colored “1” card which is used to determine first player, two Phoenix cards (one red, one green) and one Red Dragon card. Best played with the full compliment of four players, the entire deck is dealt at the beginning of the game. As previously mentioned, whomever receives the multi-colored “1” card will play first. The first player begins the game by playing a combination of cards which includes the “1” starting card (this is true only for the first hand of the game, subsequent rounds can begin with any combination). Combinations are categorized into five classes – single card, pairs, three-of-a-kind, 5-card combinations and four-of-a-kind. Whatever combination type the starting player plays becomes the required version for everyone else. The next person must play the same combination type, but with a higher rank. For example, if the first player played a pair of red 4’s, the next player must play green 5’s or higher. In Gang of Four, the different colored suits have a ranking order as well (Red > Yellow > Green). Three 2’s (two green, one yellow) can be beaten by a yellow and two red 2’s. Five-card combinations include the typical poker sets – straight, flush, full house and straight flush and are ranked in the same hierarchy. Four of a kind, also called Gang of Four, can be played at any time on any combination to up the bid. You may also pass at any time without excluding yourself from the cycle. Only once everyone has passed does the cycle end and the player who had the highest combination starts a new cycle with a new bid. When any player plays the last card from their hand the round immediately ends and score is taken. In Gang of Four you are trying NOT to score – each player receives points for how many cards are left in their hand. One point per card if you have under 7 cards, two for 8-10 cards and up to 5 per card if you never played any during the entire round (80 points). To begin the next round, the player who previously lost (had the most cards in that round) must give their highest card to the round winner. They in turn give one card of their choice to the loser – this is what I was referring to when I mentioned it rewarded the winners and punished the rest! Play again begins with whomever won the last round, but this time order is reversed. Each round this order swaps back and forth so seating position doesn’t make much difference. You won’t always be last! The other special cards in the deck have different uses. The Red Dragon is the highest ranking single card of the game. It can only be played as a single card, not as part of a combination. With it you are guaranteed to win a round of single-card play. The two Phoenix cards are the second highest ranking single cards after the Dragon. As with regular cards, the yellow version ranks higher than green. They can also be played together as the highest ranking pair or as a pair within a full house! Days of Wonder did a fantastic job of converting this Asian classic to a family-friendly title. Even though originally released in the early 2000’s, you can still find new copies on Amazon or if you prefer, play it What classic playing card game would you like to see re-themed for the hobby? -------------------------------------------------------

  7. Building on the EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 KO Ultra Gaming's success, EVGA is adding two more KO Edition graphics cards to its Turing-powered arsenal. The company today announced KO Gaming versions of the RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2070 Super. The new graphics cards use EVGA's aftermarket dual-slot cooling solution that's backed up by a pair of 85mm cooling fans. Both models measure 10.62 inches (269.83mm) long so they should fit inside the majority of modern PC cases. They also feature the same PCIe power connector configuration, which consists of a single 8-pin and 6-pin. Since the GeForce RTX 2080 Super and GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming are budget-focused offerings, EVGA ships them with reference specifications. The GeForce RTX 2080 Super and GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming utilize the same TU104 silicon but with differing core counts. The first comes with 3,072 CUDA cores, 384 Tensor cores and 48 RT cores, while the latter packs 2,560 CUDA cores, 320 Tensor cores and 40 RT cores. For reference, the vanilla GeForce RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2070 Super have a boost clock of 1,815 MHz and 1,770 MHz, respectively. Each EVGA graphics card sports 8GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit memory interface (just like Nvidia's Founder's Edition cards). Therefore, the GeForce RTX 2080 Super's memory is clocked at 15.5 Gbps for a memory bandwidth of 495.9 GBps, and the GeForce RTX 2070 Super's memory runs at 14 Gbps for a bandwidth up to 448 GBps. Display outputs are the same on both graphics cards. They each provide you with three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs and one HDMI 2.0b port (for a look at the difference between the two, check out our DisplayPort vs. HDMI analysis). EVGA rates the GeForce RTX 2080 Super KO Gaming with a total power draw of 250W and the GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming at 215W. In either case, a decent 650W power supply from a reputable manufacturer should do the trick. EVGA backs the graphics card with a limited three-year warranty. The GeForce RTX 2080 Super KO Gaming costs $699.99, while the GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming has an MSRP of $499.99. Those are the same prices as Nvidia's Founders Edition models, but they're slightly less expensive than EVGA's other Super models.

  8. The macOS High Sierra may not be the reigning Mac operating system anymore, with macOS 10.15 Catalina hitting the streets in late 2019. But, many people are still sticking to this older operating system, and will be for a few more years. With macOS 10.14 Mojave and Catalina upping the system requirements by a significant margin, we can hardly blame them. Of course, that isn’t the only reason. During macOS High Sierra’s time in the spotlight, it became one of the best versions of the Mac operating system yet, featuring some time-saving photo editing tools and a whole new file system to start. And, even though it had its small share of security issues at launch, all of those issues were addressed. Whether you’re trying to decide if sticking with macOS High Sierra or you want to take full advantage of what this operating system has to offer, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to explore everything there is to know about macOS High Sierra. macOS 10.13 High Sierra release date It wasn’t a surprise that Apple revealed macOS 10.13 High Sierra at the WWDC 2017 keynote, given Apple’s tradition of announcing the latest version of its Mac software at its annual developer event. However, it wasn’t until September 12 that Apple revealed that High Sierra would be made available a little more than a week later, on September 25. As per usual, a developer beta of the operating system was made available leading to the final release, but all that doesn’t matter anymore, as the final build of macOS 10.13 has been out in the wild for more than a year now. The final build of macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra, available now, integrates Airplay 2 into iTunes – although you do need to update iTunes to take advantage of it. You can download the update from the Mac App Store. In addition, it comes with a few bug fixes. More importantly, this update contains the bug fix that prevents the Core i9 MacBook Pro from thermal throttling. And, you can be sure that Apple will continue to release security updates for macOS High Sierra as long as users are still utilizing it. Safari 12 is also on hand for macOS High Sierra users, which not only supports website icons in your tabs, but also offers improved security. Websites, for instance, won’t be able to track your specific Mac when using the native web browser. If, on the other hand, you’re ready to jump to the next version of macOS, you can download macOS Mojave today. Lucky for you, we can show you how to download and install macOS Mojave. macOS 10.13 High Sierra compatibility Fortunately, because macOS High Sierra doesn’t really shake things up, the barrier to entry didn’t change. In fact, macOS High Sierra has much more lenient requirements than Mojave, which likely means it’s going to be po[CENSORED]r for a while. As long as you're on one of the following Mac models, you can upgrade to macOS High Sierra (if you haven’t done so already). Late 2009 iMac or newer Late 2009 MacBook/MacBook (Retina) or newer Mid-2010 MacBook Pro or newer Late 2010 MacBook Air or newer Mid-2010 Mac Mini or newer Mid-2010 Mac Pro or newer 2017 iMac Pro Bear in mind that if you want to take advantage of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) benefits posed by macOS High Sierra, you’ll need a Mac packing – at the very least – an Intel sixth-generation Skylake processor. Unfortunately, that excludes everything released before 2015. On the bright side, everything else macOS High Sierra brings to the table is fair game. macOS 10.13 High Sierra features Beyond Hackintosh users being reasonably worried about the newly enforced security checks on EFI firmware automatically implemented each week, Apple has revealed a number of fantastic fresh features with macOS 10.13 High Sierra. The new and improved Safari is one of the best and biggest improvements that come with the High Sierra, as it stops ad-tracking and auto-playing videos in their tracks. macOS High Sierra also brings Spotlight Search to the Mail App, alongside enabling the Mail app to allow split view display for the compose window. As an added extra, macOS High Sierra takes up 35% less storage space. Photos also sees enhancements, with an improved sorting tool. This is thanks to a better layout, enhanced facial recognition via neural networks and more reliable syncing across all Apple devices. All these make macOS High Sierra’s photo experience better and more seamless than ever before. Editing tools have also been given their share of updates, making it easier than ever to enhance the quality of your photos without learning the ins and outs of Photoshop or Lightroom. And of course, you can count on Instagram-like filters as being a part of this. One of the biggest changes that come with macOS High Sierra is with the file system. It’s abandoning the HFS, which Apple has used for around 30 years, and introducing the Apple File System (APFS) instead. Every Mac that has been upgraded to macOS High Sierra will receive these file system updates automatically, with the exception of those sporting Fusion Drives and older HDDs. Similarly, all new Macs will ship pre-formatted for APFS. APFS is a 64-bit file system that supports native encryption and faster metadata operation. In lay terms, it will make your Mac feel a lot faster, while also more secure and more transparent about the nature of your files as well as folder contents. Regrettably, this comes with the caveat of 32-bit apps being discontinued in later versions of macOS High Sierra. The update also brings HEVC (H.265) video compression to the Mac. Apple claims that this new standard can compress video files 40% more than the previous-generation H.264 standard, and many new high-end cameras already have this format on hand. The end result will be faster video streams at higher resolutions – ahem, 4K – and smaller video files sizes when stored locally. VR finally comes to the Mac One of the biggest pieces of news surrounding macOS High Sierra is that it will officially bring support for virtual reality headsets, namely, the HTC Vive and Steam VR. Both headsets will work with Macs running the new OS this fall. Keep in mind, however, that to use such a device, you’ll need at least a 5K iMac or MacBook Pro – or, any Mac that can run the new OS with an external GPU connected. Support for such devices comes part and parcel with macOS High Sierra. The good news is that macOS High Sierra comes with a number of refinements to its graphics API that make up for the minimal GPU support. Metal was a step forward for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, and with Metal 2, Apple offers less strain on the CPU as well as proper machine learning and better Xcode profiling/debugging in macOS High Sierra. Perhaps more importantly is the MoltenVK, which was recently brought to Mac by the Khronos Group. An implementation of the open-source Vulkan API, it’s said to bring frame rate gains of up to 50% in Dota 2. Since it’s cross-platform – being supported by Windows and Linux as well as Apple’s devices – MoltenVK is highly likely to be adopted by more creator.

  10. I’m not a huge fan of runner games, however I have played some really good ones such as Wind-Up Knight 2. Star Splash is not a good runner game. As with all runner games, you do not control the main character’s forward movement. In the case of Star Splash, you only control the dolphin’s jumping, up and down movement, and sonar. The controls on this game are so basic that it doesn’t even have analog control. The d-pad controls jumping and up and down movement. The jumping in this game is not very accurate and makes the already tricky gameplay even more difficult. The camera movement in this game is so fast that is almost impossible to get enough stars on these levels. You’ll be repeating these levels a lot. Up and down movement seems to work alright in this game though. The sonar ablity seems ok too. It should also be noted that this game takes advantage of the Wii U’s rumble feature, but it can be very annoying because the rumble will go off if you hit the smallest thing. Overall, none of this game’s controls are awful, although they lack any originality or unique Wii U features. This game is not orignal or interesting at all. The main problem with Star Splash is that you are basically doing the same thing over and over with each level. There isn’t too much variety to this game. There are a couple of powerups and extra enemies/challenges that try to make things interesting, but don’t pull it off. The only thing that this game has going for it is that it is challenging. Some people really love hard gameplay and they might like this game for that. Star Splash also has off-tv play, so it’ll be easy to avoid showing people what you’re playing! The graphics in this game will not impress you on the television set or the gamepad. Star Splash looks like a cheap mobile game that someone threw onto the Wii U. The graphics in this game are very bland and lack visual variety. The backgrounds of each set of levels change some, but not enough to make this game look interesting. Likewise, the music and sound effects in this game are dull. The sound in this game isn’t the worst I’ve ever heard, but nothing stands out. And that sums up Star Splash: Shattered Star very well: the game doesn’t stand out.. Thankfully, Star Splash: Shattered Star will not be the final game released on the Wii U. What an awful way for the system to end that would be! Star Splash is a game that should have never come to the Wii U. If this game isn’t a mobile game already, it really should be. Star Splash is clearly not a Wii U game. I do not recommend this game at all. Snails Arcade provided a copy of this game for review. Star Splash: Shattered Star is currently available on the Wii U eshop.
