  2. Membership of the main political parties continued to fall last year despite Westminster gearing up for a general election, according to newly published accounts. Labour lost 37,000 more members during 2023, leaving its total membership at 370,450 at the end of the year. Although it still has the most members of any UK party, the figure is significantly down from a peak of 532,046 at the end of 2019. The Liberal Democrats saw their membership fall by around 11,000 to 86,599, though the party said it had seen a rise in new members since its gains in July's general election. The Conservatives do not publish membership figures, but their income from membership fees fell from £1.97m to £1.5m. However, the Green Party saw its membership remain stable at around 53,000. Reform UK said its membership had grown "significantly", although it did not publish figures. A spokesperson for left-wing Labour campaign group Momentum blamed the fall in party membership on "the deliberate decisions of the Labour Party leadership to reject the transformative, po[CENSORED]r policies necessary to rebuild Britain". "In addition, the leadership has repeatedly attacked pluralism and the rights of party members in order to weaken the left and threaten independent-minded voices within the Party," the spokesperson said. "This may seem like smart politics at the moment but in the long-run Labour needs an active, engaged, mass membership to retain its political relevance." A Labour Party spokesperson said it had gained thousands of new members since the general election. "With Keir Starmer’s leadership the Labour Party has changed, returning politics to public service and a laser focus on rebuilding our country," the spokesperson said. "Our historic general election win was only possible because of this and the hard work and enthusiasm of our party members who shared Labour’s positive message across the country in the campaign." Despite Labour's membership dropping in 2023 and an increase in spending in preparation for a general election, the party ended the year with a smaller deficit than it expected. It reported a shortfall of £851,000 compared with an expected £2.5m, with party treasurer David Evans saying this was because of an increase in high-value donations and attendance at its annual conference. The Lib Dems ended 2023 with a surplus of £271,258, following a significant increase in donations and income from its party conference. The Conservatives also recorded a surplus of £17.9m, helped by a £10m bequest in the will of supermarket tycoon Lord John Sainsbury. The party had its most successful fundraising quarter in a non-election year at the start of 2023, according to its annual report. However, during the election campaign earlier this year, the Tories trailed Labour significantly in donations. In a turbulent year for the Scottish National Party, which saw the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon as leader and an ongoing police investigation into the party's finances, its membership fell by around 18,000 to 64,525. SNP membership has almost halved from a peak of 125,691 in 2019, after it saw a surge in support in the wake of the 2014 independence referendum. Party treasurer Stuart Campbell McDonald noted that members were facing cost-of-living pressures and said the SNP was seeking to pre-empt cancellations by offering options to reduce or skip payments. An SNP spokesperson said it remained "the largest political party by far in Scotland - with a membership greater than all other parties combined". Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c33n6311577o
  3. Researchers are listening to sounds made by some endangered species in a bid to help save them from extinction. Warwick University has joined forces with Australia's University of New South Wales to analyse sounds made by animals, including types of birds and elephants. The scientists are using a new method adapted from technology used to analyse brain waves in neuroscience, said Warwick University. Analysis of the animal sounds can be used to estimate po[CENSORED]tion size, identify where animals live and their migration patterns, researchers said. Scientists are also trying to understand "any negative impacts" the animals may experience from increasing levels of noise from human activity. The study is based on a method named the superlet transform (SLT) which turns signals into an image. Lead researcher Ben Jancovich said the information was "vital" to develop conservation strategies for endangered species including types of elephants, whales and birds. Mr Jancovich, a visiting PhD student from the University of New South Wales, said the new method was more accurate and helped scientists spot familiar shapes and recurring patterns of animal songs. In comparison, existing methods struggled to visualise time and frequency information at the same time, which affected the analysis of sounds. “The new method we demonstrated offers increased accuracy and requires less expertise to use, so it should prove to be a hugely valuable tool for animal sound researchers that don’t have an engineering background," he said. The research revealed calls by the Asian elephant, southern cassowary and American crocodile contains sounds that are “pulsed”. Researchers added as these discoveries were based on single recordings, they were not conclusive findings, and more sounds needed to be analysed. However, they said it illustrated "the power of this new method to clarify details". Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cw5y94nqxg1o
  4. Electric cars are the future, and each year we've seen automakers add more EVs to their lineups. Everyone is working on electric vehicles, from well-established existing manufacturers to new names such as Lucid, Canoo, and Rivian. We've compiled a list of every electric vehicle, from concept to production, that isn't available yet but will be soon. Acura’s first EV, the ZDX, was built on the bones of the Chevrolet Blazer EV, but now Acura is readying its next electric crossover, this time rolling on a new electric architecture developed by parent company Honda. Previewed by the Performance EV concept, the crossover will have a sloped coupe-like roofline and a pointy front end. The SUV will be built at Honda’s new facility in Ohio and will launch in late 2025. —Caleb Miller Link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g29994375/future-electric-cars-trucks/
  5. The Los Angeles Dodgers would survive a New York Yankees potential comeback attempt in the ninth inning to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series. Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images CNN — The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 4-2 to take Game 2 of the World Series Saturday night at Dodger Stadium. Despite the Dodgers being in control most of the game, New York threatened a late comeback in the ninth inning but would strand the bases loaded. Still reeling from Friday’s historic Game 1 win, the Dodgers offense brought the same juice early on Saturday. Tommy Edman, the National League Championship Series (NLCS) MVP, blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. The Yankees responded in the next half inning with a Juan Soto solo home run to tie the game up. The game did not remain tied for much longer. Things went off the rails for Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon in the bottom of the third inning after Teoscar Hernandez blasted a two-run home run and Freddie Freeman, the hero of Game 1, followed up with another home run of his own to make it a 4-1 game and ignite the Dodgers fans excitement. Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was nothing short of dominant, striking out four batters while only giving up one hit in 6.1 innings. He exited to a standing ovation from the Dodgers faithful. Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto dominated the New York Yankees on the way to the Game 2 win. Alex Slitz/Getty Images The LA bullpen silenced the Yankees offense until the top of the ninth inning. Soto, who had the team’s only hit leading up to his at-bat, singled and later advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen struck out Yankees slugger Aaron Judge but the very next at-bat, Giancarlo Stanton drove in New York’s second run of the game to cut into the lead. The Yankees offense did not stop there. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right field and Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. With what FOX announcers called his potential “Derek Jeter moment,” Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe struck out for the second out. The Dodgers pulled Treinen and had Alex Vesia come in to try to close out the game. Vesia got pinch hitter Jose Trevino to fly out to center field to limit the damage and secure the Game 2 victory. With a 2-0 series lead, the Dodgers are now two wins away from claiming their eighth World Series crown in franchise history. 6. READ MORE: Class action against 'life-ruining' contraceptive pill A high-flying international lawyer whose firm 'put Australian corporations on notice' about a potential wave of class action lawsuits against miners and financial services companies has suddenly quit his post. International class action specialists Pogust Goodhead set up shop in Australia last year and issued a warning that they were eyeing a series of business giants and planning to hold them to account over their responsibility to exhibit 'basic decency and fairness'. But the firm was this week hit with the surprise departure of jetsetting co-founder and global chairman Harris Pogust, who announced he was stepping down from his role after six years in order to 'devote more time and energy to my philanthropic endeavours'. In a statement this week, Mr Pogust wished his co-founder Mr Goodhead all the best and praised the firm for having 'helped defend the rights of those who cannot defend themselves against the misdeeds of big business'. Pogust Goodhead is currently taking action against BHP in the UK over the Samarco mine disaster in Brazil, which cost 19 people their lives and contaminated waterways and land spanning multiple villages in a case tipped to be worth up to $70billion in damages. Last month, the class action specialist firm also shed up to 20 per cent of its staff - with jobs shed at its offices in both the UK and Brazil, the UK's Law Society Gazette reported. The New Jersey-born Mr Pogust has more than 25 years' experience in litigation and class actions. Daily Mail Australia revealed an insight into Mr Pogust's lavish lifestyle earlier this year. Photographs show the crusading lawyer and his wife Carrie flying by private jet - including with their dog - sipping cocktails on luxury boats and travelling interstate for meals. In November 2023, he shared details of his new property - a sprawling six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion boasting a pool, gym and wine cellar. A month prior he shared another photo of his laptop overlooking the ocean. 'Nothing like flying down for dinner than back home. The fun never ends...' he wrote, tagging his location at Philadelphia International Airport. His wife has also shared photos of both Mr Pogust and the couple's dog on a private jet, as well as luxurious snaps on yachts. His firm, Pogust Goodhead, launched in 2018 and earned the title 'the first legal unicorn' after raising $300million in financial backing early on. Co-founder Tom Goodhead visited Australia twice in 2023 to meet with MPs, unions and super funds over potential litigation. The firm set up an office in Sydney, headed by commercial disputes specialist Amie Crichton. Ms Crichton cut her teeth on the other side of litigation, defending class actions on behalf of insurers for eight years. Speaking to law.com, she said that experience gives her a strategic advantage in prosecuting future class actions. She said it had given her a much deeper understanding of how corporations seek to defend such matters - and how to counter that. 'We are investigating a number of new cases against Australian multinational corporations, such as BHP, in which their commitment to this responsibility has been seriously thrown into question,' said Mr Goodhead. 'With the launch of our Sydney office, we are putting Australian corporations on notice that we are ready to hold them to account. 'We are establishing a base in BHP's backyard to ensure we explore every avenue in our fight for justice for victims.' The legal eagles said areas they're targeting include the mining and resources sector, human rights issues, corporate misconduct, environmental issues and consumer law. 'Specialists in the class action sector are becoming a little bit more creative and willing to attempt to find recourse through different channels,' she said. Mr Goodhead, who is both Oxford and Cambridge educated, spoke in February about the expansion and their current litigation portfolio. He said winning one or more of the major litigations would see his team become 'the highest-paid lawyers in the country by quiet some margin'. And several months earlier in an interview with the Law Gazette in November 2023, Mr Goodhead spoke openly about his company's capitalist ambitions. 'We are here to make a profit,' he said bluntly. 'This isn't an NGO though I know we look like one. We are here to make a profit... I've got trainee solicitors earning 150k.' 7. A mother and her three daughters were among seven people killed in Ukraine's western city of Lviv, during a fresh wave of Russian attacks. A baby and another girl were also killed, officials said. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said Russia had attacked with drones and hypersonic missiles early on Wednesday. The attack came as Ukraine reeled from Russia's deadliest single bombardment this year - a strike on a military institute in the central city of Poltava that left 53 people dead. Explosions were also heard on Wednesday over the capital Kyiv as air defences targeted Russian missiles. Five people were wounded in Kryvyy Rih when a hotel was hit and nearby blocks of flats were damaged. The attack on Lviv in the far west of Ukraine came as all of Ukraine was under air raid alert. Witnesses said the city was targeted at about 05:40 (02:40 GMT). Russia's defence ministry said it had fired Kinzhal hypersonic weapons at Ukrainian defence industry facilities in Lviv and that all designated targets had been hit. However, Mr Sadovy said Russia's attack had damaged more than 50 buildings in the historic heart of Lviv, including homes, schools and clinics. He posted a picture on social media of a local family, saying that only the father had survived. His wife, Yevgenia, and their three daughters - Darina, Emilia and 21-year-old Yaryna - all died in their own home, he said. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpqj35jv3e7o

  11. Samsung announced the One UI 7 beta rollout in select regions a month after its initial unveiling at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2024 in San Jose, California. The update brings Android 15 to Galaxy devices, introducing visual enhancements with more customisation options, a new notification system called Now Bar, redesigned One UI widgets, improved user interface (UI) for the camera app, and additions to Galaxy AI — the company's suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features. One UI 7 Beta Availability, Eligible Models Samsung says that the One UI 7 beta programme is initially available for the Galaxy S24 series in Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the UK and the US. It can be joined by signing up for the beta programme via the Samsung Members app. The company highlights that the update's features may vary depending on the country or region the user resides in. It supports a total of 29 languages including local dialects, such as Arabic, Chinese, English (Australia, India, United Kingdom, United States), Dutch, French (Canada, France), German, Hindi, Spanish (Mexico, Spain, United States), and Vietnamese. One UI 7 beta carries Samsung's three core goals which it announced at SDC — Purposeful simplicity, signature impression, and emotional attachment. As per the South Korean technology conglomerate, it brings a new notification system which is said to make accessing notifications from the lock screen easier, courtesy of an addition dubbed ‘Now Bar'. It displays relevant activities across apps like Interpreter, Music, Recording, and Stopwatch, providing key information without having to unlock the smartphone. Samsung confirms that this feature will be exclusive to the next-generation Galaxy S series. The native Camera app has been redesigned with reorganised camera buttons, controls and, modes. One UI 7 beta introduces simplified settings when shooting in the Pro and Pro video modes, while it also adds a zoom control option in the latter for smooth transitions, as per the company. A big part of One UI 7 beta is the range of AI features on offer. Galaxy AI brings advanced writing tools which have been integrated into the operating system (OS), eliminating the need to switch apps for selecting the text. Similar to Apple Intelligence, users can carry out grammar and spell checks, change the writing tone, summarise, or create bulleted lists. Call transcripts support 20 languages and work automatically for recorded conversations. Other features of the update include reduced visual clutter, redesigned One UI 7 widgets, and a new lock screen. 12. Windows 11 will soon allow easy webcam resolution adjustments in settings without extra software A hidden feature in Windows Insider build lets users manually select webcam resolution and frame rate New options include multi-app webcam use and a ‘basic’ mode for troubleshooting camera issues Adjusting your webcam’s resolution on Windows 11 PCs is about to get a lot easier - without needing to install extra software. The operating system already offers several webcam settings, which can be found by going to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Cameras. Here, you can change webcam settings like brightness, sharpness, and contrast, and soon you’ll be able to control your webcam’s resolution too. Signs of the new addition to Windows 11’s webcam settings were picked up and shared by reliable Windows leaker @PhantomOfEarth on X. In a recent Windows Insider Canary Channel preview build of Windows 11, they found a hidden feature ID that could be enabled that adds an option to modify your webcam’s image resolution. According to Neowin, this option will allow you to let Windows 11 choose the best resolution for your webcam automatically or manually select a fixed resolution and frame rate. If you enable this hidden feature ID, new options will be added to the camera settings menu. There, your webcam will (hopefully) now be listed with an ‘Edit’ option. Upon selecting this, you’ll be met with a list of resolutions available for your webcam, as well as two other new options, including letting multiple apps use your webcam at the same time and a ‘basic’ mode you can turn on if your webcam seems like it’s malfunctioning - not unlike booting Windows in ‘Safe Mode’ to debug OS problems. When we expect to see the new settings and how you can get it now If your computer is running one of the latest versions of Windows 11 (build 27744 or newer), you can enable this new setting for yourself, although you have to use ViveTool to do this. I would recommend you check out Neowin’s explanation of how to do this if you’re eager to test out this new feature early. Overall, this is a positive update to Windows 11 (something that has been… a little rare of late), especially since more in-depth customization of your webcam has often required the use of third-party apps. This could be especially useful while you’re in video calls or meetings or if you want to quickly switch video quality while making a recording. This change is still a hidden feature in a preview version of Windows 11, but if it’s made it this far, I expect that we’ll see it in a future update for the live public version of the OS fairly soon. 13. The U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released guidelines for network engineers, defenders, and organizations with enterprise-grade networking equipment as part of its continuing investigation into the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC’s) massive cyber espionage campaign. While the agency has released general guidelines for increased visibility and hardening that apply to any network, it also had a section labeled ‘Cisco-Specific Guidance.’ According to the document, “authoring agencies have observed Cisco-specific features often being targeted by, and associated with, these PRC cyber threat actors’ activity.” Aside from the recommendations mentioned, CISA also linked to Cisco’s IOS XE Hardening Guide and Guide to Securing NX-OS Software Devices. This shows that the networking company is likely aware of its vulnerabilities and is taking steps to help protect its customers from those who need it without removing features that make it easier for others who don’t need more stringent security to use its products. Jowi Morales is a tech enthusiast with years of experience working in the industry. He’s been writing with several tech publications since 2021, where he’s been interested in tech hardware and consumer electronics. CISA acknowledges Cisco and Google Cloud Security in the guideline document, which shows how the private sector cooperates with the U.S. government to help protect its network systems. Furthermore, this warning isn’t limited to the U.S., as other cybersecurity and counter-espionage agencies from other allied countries, specifically Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, are also participating in the investigation that the U.S. is leading. This warning was made about a month after the U.S. CISA announced that PRC-affiliated actors were targeting eight commercial telecommunications providers across the U.S., which was suspected to have started as far back as 2022. It said the attackers exfiltrated customer call records, compromised the private communications of some high-value targets in government and politics, and copied information related to U.S. court proceedings. The good news is that these activities are seemingly bound to the existing weaknesses of the target infrastructure, which are known to the authorities and manufacturers of the affected devices, which seem to be mostly Cisco networking equipment. CISA says that you could secure your network and prevent being targeted by these threat actors by patching the affected devices and services and ensuring your environment by following its released guidelines. 14. I've been reliably informed that some people want nothing more than a really big wolf to ride around on. Behold: Soulframe answers, with its latest teaser trailer showing off Orengall's new fable, which lets you forge a pact with the wolf. Which means big wolf. I mean, all wolves are big, but that one's really big. The teaser trailer was debuted at the end of this week's Soulframe developer stream leading up to their enhanced pre-alpha—called Preludes—and eventually full public access to Soulframe. In it, the protagonist Envoy summons wolves to ride, battle alongside, and even uses wolf powers to contribute to their exploration and combat. The developer stream showed off Soulframe's most recent updates, like the Silent Rose Cave that will serve as its first player social hub area with NPCs to talk to, side quests to grab, and other people to meet. There's also the aforementioned new fable for Orengall, as well as new environmental challenges and hazards that show up during dungeon delves. "Ever since we started letting players get their hands on Soulframe earlier this year in our Pre-Alpha playtests, things have ramped up in the best way possible," said Geoff Crookes, Soulframe creative director, in a press release. "We've always had a greater vision for what we aspire Soulframe to be, but feedback from the community will always remain our north star. That community feedback paves a tailored roadmap on changes to make and focus on in our current Pre-Alpha around nearly every aspect of the game as we ramp things up for full public access. We hear the feedback around combat and lack of social features, which is why you’ve seen those elements become major focuses for us as we add new things like social hubs." You can watch the full hour Soulframe Devstream 3 on YouTube, or embedded below. You can also just watch one funny bug they showed off.
