  1. Is it an R or is it more of a T in disguise - the OnePlus 12R goes global for a change. In the past, the R models were typically a repackage of a China-only OnePlus Ace, to be sold only in India. The OnePlus Ts, on the other hand, have similarly had Chinese counterparts, but they have been more widely available internationally - only they were later releases, not so close chronologically to the 'main' model. The OnePlus 12R is apparently both. Like previous R models, it comes out more or less at the same time as the flagship, and it's the international alter-ego to the Chinese OnePlus Ace 3. It's going to be sold in many markets, however, including the US and parts of Europe, just like the Ts. And like both Rs and Ts, the 12R is a notch below the top dog in many ways. The most notable downgrades are the chipset and camera - but also, consequently, price. The phone features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 - last year's every-flagship chip, and that's easily powerful enough for 2024 and who knows how many more years to come. The 8GB/128GB base version isn't quite flagshippy, and the 16GB/256GB variant sounds more like it, but there's no 512GB option here - another area where it shows that this OnePlus has a letter in the name. Where the 12R clearly abandons all aspirations for high-end stature is the camera hardware. No telephoto, a modest ultrawide, and a proven, but unremarkable main unit team up to form a setup that's somewhere in midrange territory. You could try and slap the 'flagship killer' moniker that the OG OnePlus was so proud of, but that's largely been stripped of meaning by now. Anyway, just because cameraphone excellence isn't on the table, doesn't mean the 12R isn't good enough for what it is - we'll get to that. OnePlus 12R review In a few other aspects the R doesn't mean less. In fact, the 12R's 5,500mAh battery is the largest on a OnePlus phone and 100mAh more than you get on the 12. The 100W charging capability is a match between the two models (if you have a 220V socket, otherwise it's 80W, but still the same between the two), as is the IP65 rating - for better or worse. Update, 08 Feb, 2024: OnePlus 12R official specs pages now list the IP rating as IP64, which differs from the information initially provided to us. That downgrades the level of protection from 'water jets' to 'splashes of water'. Update, 16 Feb, 2024: OnePlus 12R 256GB official specs pages now list the storage used by the phone as UFS 3.1 instead of UFS 4.0. The company has issued a statement on the matter. Then there's the display. Oddly enough, the promo materials insist that the 12R has "the most advanced OnePlus display, ever", making it sound superior to the 12's. The specs show one minor disadvantage here - resolution is ever so slightly lower, inconsequentially so - but we'll be interested to see how it behaves in other metrics. There's parity when it comes to the smaller things - the 12R features an infrared emitter, stereo speakers, and an optical fingerprint reader. There's also an alert slider - always there on the main models, not guaranteed on the lesser ones. OnePlus 12R specs at a glance: Body: 163.3x75.3x8.8mm, 207g; aluminum frame, IP64 dustproof and water-resitant. Display: 6.78" LTPO4 AMOLED, 1B colors, 120Hz, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, 1600 nits (HBM), 4500 nits (peak), 1264x2780px resolution, 19.8:9 aspect ratio, 450ppi. Chipset: Qualcomm SM8550-AB Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4 nm): Octa-core (1x3.2 GHz Cortex-X3 & 2x2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 & 2x2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 & 3x2.0 GHz Cortex-A510); Adreno 740. Memory: 128GB 8GB RAM, 256GB 16GB RAM; UFS 3.1. OS/Software: Android 14, OxygenOS 14. Rear camera: Wide (main): 50 MP, f/1.8, 24mm, 1/1.56", 1.0µm, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 8 MP, f/2.2, 16mm, 112˚, 1/4.0", 1.12µm; Macro: 2 MP, f/2.4. Front camera: 16 MP, f/2.4, 26mm (wide), 1/3", 1.0µm. Video capture: Rear camera: 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/120/240fps, gyro-EIS, OIS; Front camera: 1080p@30fps, gyro-EIS. Battery: 5500mAh; 100W wired, 1-100% in 26 min (advertised). Connectivity: 5G; Dual SIM; Wi-Fi 7; BT 5.3, aptX HD; NFC; Infrared port. Misc: Fingerprint reader (under display, optical); stereo speakers. The OnePlus 12R retail package is very similar to the 12's, only here both pieces of the box are red. A large '12R' badge dominates the front, with a more modest OnePlus logo in the bottom left corner. Inside, you'll find a 100W adapter (which maxes out at 80W for 110V power sources) and a USB-A-to-C cable to go with it. The India-exclusive previous Rs did include a protective case in the box, and apparently so too does the more widely-available 12R... in India. Our Euro review unit remains naked out of the box. The 12 itself is getting the same region-dependent treatment, we've now come to realize. All locales appear to be receiving a sticker sheet with three stickers to spread the OnePlus love across your other devices, as well as a 'Red Cable Club' membership card for discounts when shopping for accessories. Also found in some boxes is a female USB-A to male USB-C adapter - its spot was empty in the (sealed) box that made it to us. OnePlus 12R review - GSMArena.com tests
  2. Cheat Engine (CE) is a proprietary, source available[5] freeware memory scanner/debugger created by Eric Heijnen ("Byte, Darke") for the Windows operating system in 2000.[6][7] Cheat Engine is mostly used for cheating in computer games and is sometimes modified and recompiled to support new games. It searches for values input by the user with a wide variety of options that allow the user to find and sort through the computer's memory. Cheat Engine can also create standalone trainers that can operate independently of Cheat Engine, often found on user forums or at the request of another user. While it is source-available, it is not free and open source software, as its license contains restrictions on redistribution.[8] Features Cheat Engine can view the disassembled memory of a process and allow the addition and/or alteration of game states to give the user advantages such as infinite health, time, or ammunition. It also has some Direct3D mani[CENSORED]tion tools, allowing vision through walls "Wallhacking" and zooming in/out "FOV changes", and with some advanced configuration, Cheat Engine can move the mouse to get a certain texture into the center of the screen. This is commonly used to create aimbots. However, the main use for Cheat Engine is in single player aspect of games, and its use in multiplayer games is discouraged.[9] As of version 6.1, Cheat Engine can produce game trainers from the tables. While trainers generated in this way are typically very large for their intended purpose, generally used for testing purposes, some have been released by trainers groups as "final" versions,[10] and even some po[CENSORED]r sites are fully based on CE trainers[11] due to the ease of trainer creation with CE. However, despite their po[CENSORED]rity, CE trainer maker has not been updated since its implementation in version 6.1—it is largely unsupported, and emphasis is given on using Lua to generate trainers. Even the trainer maker itself uses Lua scripts to generate trainers. Implementations Two branches of Cheat Engine exist, Cheat Engine Delphi and Cheat Engine Lazarus. Cheat Engine Delphi is primarily for 32-bit versions of Windows XP. Cheat Engine Lazarus is designed for 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. Cheat Engine is, with the exception of the kernel module, written in Object Pascal. Cheat Engine exposes an interface to its device driver with dbk32.dll, a wrapper that handles both loading and initializing the Cheat Engine driver and calling alternative Windows kernel functions. Due to a programming bug in Lazarus pertaining to the use of try and except blocks, Cheat Engine Lazarus had to remove the use of dbk32.dll and incorporate the driver functions in the main executable. The kernel module, while not essential to normal CE use, can be used to set hardware breakpoints and bypass hooked API in Ring 3, even some in Ring 0. The module is compiled with the Windows Driver Kit and is written in C.[12] Cheat Engine also has a plugin architecture for those who do not wish to share their source code with the community. They are more commonly used for game specific features, as Cheat Engine's stated intent is to be a generic cheating tool. These plugins can be found in several locations on the Cheat Engine website as well as other gaming sites.[13] Cheat Engine Lazarus has the ability to load its unsigned 64-bit device driver on Windows Vista and later x64 bit versions of Windows, by using DBVM, a virtual machine by the same developers that allows access to kernel space from user mode. It is used to allocate nonpaged memory in kernel mode, manually loading the executable image, and creating a system thread at Driver Entry. However, since the Driver Entry parameters are not actually valid, the driver must be modified for DBVM. Cheat Tables Cheat Engine allows its users to share their addresses and code locations with other users of the community by making use of cheat tables. "Cheat Tables" is a file format used by Cheat Engine to store data such as cheat addresses, scripts including Lua scripts and code locations, usually carrying the file extension .ct. Using a Cheat Table is straightforward and involves simply opening the Cheat Table through Cheat Engine and enabling/ticking the cheats stored within it. The ability to save and share Cheat Tables has resulted in a large online community for sharing cheats through the Cheat Engine Forums. Po[CENSORED]r Cheat Tables are hosted on the Fearless Revolution website.[14] In addition to simple memory addresses, cheat tables can extend the functionality of Cheat Engine using the Lua scripting language. Almost all of Cheat Engine's features are scriptable, and it is even possible to design custom dialogs to interact with scripts. Controversy In 2017, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) sent a copyright infringement notice asking Eric Heijnen to cease and desist. The notice claimed Cheat Engine allowed evading anti-cheat technologies, accessing in-game DLC items/microtransaction items that could only be bought with real money. Eric Heijnen responded by shutting down the cheat tables section to the public, asking them to be hosted off-site and coming to an agreement with ESA.[15] The Cheat Engine community was not happy with the steps taken, and prominent members moved to a new community website called Fearless Revolution where old cheat tables have been uploaded and new ones are being posted. The Cheat Engine website and forums only focus on development of the tool itself now, and cheat tables have moved to Fearless Revolution forums.[16][17] Malware distribution The installers of Cheat Engine are known to include potentially unwanted programs which are often bloatware or malware, and as a result, most anti-virus software detects the installer as a virus.[18][19][20] Bloatware-free versions are generally available on the product's Patreon page, or users can build the program from the GitHub repository through any Pascal compiler.[21] Cheat Engine - Wikipedia
  3. If Dell's XPS 15 went to engineering school, it would graduate as the Precision 5530 (starts at $1,519; $3,647 as tested). Billed as Dell's lightest, thinnest, and smallest 15.6-inch mobile workstation, the Precision 5530 is not a "lite" or lower power/more portable entry like HP's ZBook 14u G4. Instead, it competes with HP's and Lenovo's full-bore, over-5.5-pound ZBook 15 G4 and ThinkPad P51 respectively, with a potent Intel Xeon processor and Nvidia Quadro graphics, while weighing about 4 pounds. Indeed, since it has the first six-core "Coffee Lake" Xeon chip we've seen in a mobile workstation, the Precision outruns those quad-core systems—and replaces the ZBook 15 G4 as our Editors' Choice in the category. The $1,519 starter configuration is decidedly modest, with a Core i5 CPU, Intel integrated graphics, 8GB of memory, a 1TB hybrid hard drive with 8GB of cache, and a 1080p display. Soaring to $3,647, my test unit combined a 2.7GHz (4.4GHz turbo) Xeon E-2176M, 4GB Quadro P2000 graphics, 32GB of non-ECC memory, a 512GB NVMe solid-state drive (SSD), and a 4K (3,840-by-2,160-pixel) touch display. The memory ceiling is 32GB; ECC memory is not an option despite the Xeon processor, which isn't even the top choice—that would be the 2.9GHz Core i9-8950HK, the same chip offered in the top-end 15-inch version of the 2018 MacBook Pro. Storage can climb to 4TB in the form of one M.2 SSD plus one 2.5-inch hard drive. The software preload stars Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, a special release for systems with four or more cores. Dell bundles a Precision Optimizer utility that tweaks performance settings for po[CENSORED]r apps; a $175 premium version applies AI analysis to, the company claims, dramatically improve the throughput of your favorite programs based on how you work. Style-wise, the Precision 5530 is one handsome slab. The motif is black brushed aluminum with wraparound chrome accents, and a carbon-fiber-patterned palm rest and keyboard deck. It measures 0.66 by 14.1 by 9.3 inches—trimmer than the slimline Lenovo ThinkPad P52s ($1,199.00 at Amazon) (0.8 by 14.4 by 9.5 inches), let alone a full-size 15.6-inch mobile workstation like the HP ZBook 15 G4 (1.0 by 15.2 by 10.4 inches). The base model squeaks under the four-pound line at 3.93 pounds, though the test unit I have in hand, with a touch screen and a larger 97-watt-hour battery, is closer to the 4.4-pound P52s. (Even so, compare the ZBook 15 G4 , at 5.8 pounds.) On the laptop's left side are a headphone jack, a Thunderbolt 3 port, an HDMI port, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port (we won't mind if you call it a USB 3.0), and the connector for the shirt-pocket-size AC adapter. On the right are another USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, an SD card slot, a security lock slot, and an XPS-style battery-gauge button. I can hear purists harping that a single Thunderbolt 3 port is skimpy compared to the two of the ZBook or the four of Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro, but Thunderbolt 3's daisy-chaining abilities help offset that, and you've got to compromise somewhere for a machine this svelte. Dell bundles a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet dongle in the box. The stylishly skinny bezels of what Dell calls its InfinityEdge display mean that the Precision 5530, like the Dell XPS 13 ($799.99 at Dell) , has no room for a webcam above the screen. Instead, the camera's centered below it, so while its images are above average in brightness and certainly sharp, your Skype colleagues will mainly look up at your chin and into your nostrils—unless you happen to type something, in which case all they'll see are your enormous knuckles. Your own view will be considerably nicer, because the Precision's IGZO-based touch screen is a highlight. The panel is somewhat reflective when switched off, but largely free of glare and mirror images during use. Brightness and contrast are ample, and viewing angles are broad. Fine details pop, thanks to the 4K native resolution of the tester's panel, and colors are rich and saturated. Photos, charts, and rendered objects all look vivid and engaging to my eyes. In other audiovisual news, the bottom-mounted speakers pump out adequate sound, easily loud enough to fill a room and realistic enough to enjoy streaming audio and MP3s. Don't expect much in the way of bass response, but overall, the sound is closer to FM than AM radio. The backlit keyboard features a buttonless touchpad, which is odd because many workstation independent software vendor (ISV) apps not only make heavy use of mouse buttons but rely on a middle button. Still, at least the touchpad itself glides and taps smoothly. The keyboard lacks a numeric keypad (as well as dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys, which are doubled up on the cursor arrows); it has a somewhat shallow, rubbery feel, but reasonably snappy feedback. I managed 84 words per minute (wpm) with no errors in an online typing test, but I didn't feel the crisp control I've felt with my favorite laptops. The Precision 5530 earned over 3,200 points in our PCMark 8 Work Conventional office-productivity test, which is excellent (particularly for a system with a 4K screen, which tends to drag down that score). But its six CPU cores absolutely pummeled our Cinebench processor and Handbrake video-editing exercises—it completed the latter in 40 seconds, just half the time of the ThinkPad P52s and 17 seconds ahead of the HP ZBook 15 G4. The Precision also won our Adobe Photoshop image-editing race, albeit by a slender margin. Its Quadro P2000 GPU was no match for the mighty Quadro P5000 in the HP ZBook 17 G4 ($2,399.00 at HP) , which dominated our 3DMark, Heaven, and Valley graphics and gaming simulations (the ZBook 15 G4, given the advantage of a 1080p rather than 4K screen, won the native-resolution subtests in Heaven and Valley). 4. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney[a] is a visual novel adventure video game developed and published by Capcom. It is the fourth title in the Ace Attorney series, and was released for the Nintendo DS handheld game console in Japan in 2007 and in the West in 2008, for iOS and Android in 2016, and for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017. It was also released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One in 2024, as part of the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy compilation. The game takes place seven years after the previous game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations. Phoenix Wright, the main character of previous titles in the series, has been stripped of his attorney's badge, and Apollo Justice, an up-and-coming attorney, becomes his apprentice, working with Phoenix's adopted daughter Trucy on four cases. The player's goal is to get their clients declared not guilty; to do this, they investigate the cases and cross-examine witnesses. When finding inconsistencies in witness testimonies, the player is able to present pieces of evidence that contradict the witnesses' statements. They can also use the "perceive" system, in which they are able to see nervous motions or actions during witness testimonies, similar to a tell in poker. The game was developed by a team of 28 staff members, including producer Minae Matsukawa, director Mitsuru Endo, and character designer Kazuya Nuri. Series creator Shu Takumi, who wrote the game's scenario and took on a supervisory role for the production, had wanted the series to end with Trials and Tribulations, as he felt that Phoenix's character had been explored fully; when it was decided that the game would get made, he wanted it to have a new main character with a new story, and wanted Phoenix to not make an appearance. Despite this, it was decided that Phoenix would serve as a mentor to Apollo. Apollo Justice sold around 250,000 copies during the first retail week and 515,417 by the end of 2007, and has been mostly positively received by critics. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney - Wikipedia
  5. What separates the great games from the good games? There’s an intangible aspect of making a game feel fun to play that can be difficult to pin down when trying to describe it, and even more difficult for a developer to create. But when a developer nails it down, it’s truly sublime. Crossy Road (Free) absolutely nails how a game should feel, which makes it endlessly replayable, and my current go-to pick-up-and-play game. The game is essentially a randomly-generated take on Frogger, where players initially control a chicken trying to cross highways and rivers to get as far as possible, because the world is endlessly scrolling behind them, and an eagle will come and swoop them up, which is a good enough reason to get in gear. Someday the eagle will come for us all, or we’ll get hit by a train, or swept into rapids. Such is the course of the universe. Really, the game is just the same core concept as Frogger, and on the surface, it might be difficult to think how this is so special. It comes down to structure and feel of the game. As the title’s similarity to Flappy Bird may have tipped, there’s a bit of an influence there. The scoring is simply about how far you get, and you have only one life, rather than multiple. I think these changes make the game rather accessible, and built for quick sessions. Crossy Road utterly nails how a game should feel. Tapping to move forward has a great feel to it, with just a bit of whimsy to it with the bouncing. When you get hit by a train, you really feel the impact. There’s so many subtle details added to make the game just have a good feeling to it. The characters having their own cosmetic effects goes a long way towards making this game feel pleasing. Having Game Center friends’ scores show up while playing is one of my favorite features, and looks great integrated into the world. Even the retries are quick and with the stylish flash of the title screen to get everything reset and restarted. There’s also the option to “conserve battery" which reduces the framerate, which means that you don’t have to trade battery life in exchange for the stylistic aspects. Either way, the voxel-based visuals are simple-yet-fantastic. I’ve already seen complaints about Crossy Road‘s free-to-play aspects, and I think the nature of such complaints are utter poppycock. Crossy Road‘s free-to-play monetization is based around playing as different characters, which is pretty much cosmetic. The characters do more than just exist as costumes, like the Mad Wizard will blow up trees, and the eponymous hero of Forget-Me-Not (Free) has flowers to collect. And some characters make the game play at night. These characters can be bought for $0.99 each, or earned randomly in a lottery system, where 100 coins will unlock a new character, with coins earnable through gameplay, video ads, and a regular free gift. The controls work great. Tapping goes forward, with swiping used to go in any of the four cardinal directions. This does mean that going horizontally quickly requires some quick swipes, which isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but it’s also a good reminder that it’s maybe not the best idea to be running horizontally. There’s Everyplay video sharing, but it’s an odd implementation in that it doesn’t record individual runs, it just has an on-off switch for recording. Whether people like this better than recording individual runs is a good question, but it’s definitely unorthodox, and I like the idea of having my best run recorded whether I remember to enable recording or not. At least this means the feature is easily-disabled for those who don’t want it enabled. The game can thankfully be played in any orientation, which makes this great for playing one-handed on iPhone or with a propped-up iPad on a table in equal measure. That goes a long way toward making this game feel so great – it’s adaptable to however you want to play it. The character lottery does give out duplicates, however, and that kind of bugs me, but other than that, this is exactly how free-to-play should work! You don’t get any ads unless you consciously choose to view one. And the aspects to spend money on are 100% optional, you can spend the entire game just playing as the starting character and get the same caliber of experience as someone who bought every single character outright. I think it’s an amazing balance between having those free-to-play elements, but also making them so that players who don’t want to participate don’t have to. Also, I hope more characters make cameos in later updates – there’s just Forget-Me-Not and the hero of Epoch ($0.99) right now, and I’d love for more characters to show up, as games referencing other games is my favorite thing. Crossy Road is a simple game, but there’s clearly a lot of work that went into making it one of the best ‘simple’ experiences that can be enjoyed. This is already the kind of game where I’m going back and forth with people for high scores, and sharing my high scores to Twitter. I’ve become absolutely hooked to this game, and I don’t see that ending any time soon. It does a wondeful job at balancing out being accessible, and a free game that both can be played for free, but isn’t necessarily afraid to try and make a little money, either. Play this game. ‘Crossy Road’ Review – Watch Out for That Train! – TouchArcade
  6. I was halfway through the opening level of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s campaign, unloading bolt rifle rounds alongside my two squadmates, when I found myself smiling at just how good it feels to be back in this futuristic grimdark fray. It’s been over a decade since the original, but Space Marine 2 reinvigorates the squad-based shooter series with seeming ease. The environments are varied and breathtaking, the running-and-gunning feels great, and the sense of comradeship while fighting with your team, be they bots or friends, can be exhilarating. It may not break much new ground in its genre, but it didn’t need to for me to have a blast playing through its dozen-hour campaign. Let’s get this out of the way early: The original Space Marine clearly took inspiration from Gears of War, and this sequel follows suit. It’s a squad-based shooter starring heavily armored dudes who growl their dialog while either shooting guns or revving Chainswords to ward off invading aliens. The similarities don’t bother me a bit (especially when one could make the case that Gears borrowed from Warhammer first). It’s been years since I’ve played a game that scratched that particular itch, and Space Marine 2 uses the rich lore of Warhammer 40k to carve out its own identity. That’s true in both the meaty campaign that can be played solo or co-op, as well as two additional modes that let you upgrade your weapons and customize your armor between rounds, which are meant to keep you coming back after the credits roll. The campaign drops you back into the considerable boots of Demetrian Titus, the hero of the first installment. It picks up over a hundred years later, and does a good job of explaining everything you need to know, whether you played the original or not. Despite the century-long gap, not much has changed for our dour hero since we last saw him. He’s still a gravelly-voiced, seasoned soldier who doesn’t appear to have aged at all thanks to his genetically-engineered longevity. He’s spent the last century serving in the Space Marines’ Deathwatch chapter, which goes on the most dangerous of missions. After an intense opening level that has you deploying a “Virus Bomb,” you’re rewarded for your bravery and dedication by being brought back into the fold as a blue-armored Ultramarine. The story is more than serviceable, and it moves at a fast clip, sending your squad to interesting locations across several planets. It has a few twists and turns that bring it to surprising places, and there’s even some intriguing inter-squad conflict to spice things up. That said, the whole thing is pretty one-note: it’s all very serious. I get that there’s a war going on and lives are on the line, but just a dash of humor – even the gallows humor many other 40k games use – would have added a welcome extra dimension. 7. Siphonophorae (from Greek siphōn 'tube' + pherein 'to bear'[2]) is an order within Hydrozoa, which is a class of marine organisms within the phylum Cnidaria. According to the World Register of Marine Species, the order contains 175 species described thus far.[3] Siphonophores are highly polymorphic and complex organisms.[4] Although they may appear to be individual organisms, each specimen is in fact a colonial organism composed of medusoid and polypoid zooids that are morphologically and functionally specialized.[5] Zooids are multicellular units that develop from a single fertilized egg and combine to create functional colonies able to reproduce, digest, float, maintain body positioning, and use jet propulsion to move.[6] Most colonies are long, thin, transparent floaters living in the pelagic zone.[7] Like other hydrozoans, some siphonophores emit light to attract and attack prey. While many sea animals produce blue and green bioluminescence, a siphonophore in the genus Erenna was only the second life form found to produce a red light (the first one being the scaleless dragonfish Chirostomias pliopterus).[8][9] Siphonophores are colonial hydrozoans that do not exhibit alternation of generations but instead reproduce asexually through a budding process.[10] Zooids are the multicellular units that build the colonies. A single bud called the pro-bud initiates the growth of a colony by undergoing fission.[7] Each zooid is produced to be genetically identical; however, mutations can alter their functions and increase diversity of the zooids within the colony.[7] Siphonophores are unique in that the pro-bud initiates the production of diverse zooids with specific functions.[7] The functions and organizations of the zooids in colonies widely vary among the different species; however, the majority of colonies are bilaterally arranged with dorsal and ventral sides to the stem.[7] The stem is the vertical branch in the center of the colony to which the zooids attach.[7] Zooids typically have special functions, and thus assume specific spatial patterns along the stem.[7] Siphonophores typically exhibit one of three standard body plans matching the suborders: Cystonectae, Physonectae, and Calycophorae.[11] Cystonects have a long stem with the attached zooids.[11] Each group of zooids has a gastrozooid.[11] The gastrozooid has a tentacle used for capturing and digesting food.[11] The groups also have gonophores, which are specialized for reproduction.[11] They use a pneumatophore, a gas-filled float, on their anterior end and drift at the surface of the water or stay afloat in the deep sea.[11] Physonects have a pneumatophore and nectosome, which harbors the nectophores used for jet propulsion.[11] The nectophores pump water backwards in order to move forward.[11] Calycophorans differ from cystonects and physonects in that they have two nectophores and no pneumatophore.[11] Instead they often possess oil-filled glands which likely help with buoyancy.[12] Siphonophores possess multiple types of zooid.[13] Scientists have determined two possible evolutionary hypothesis for this observation: 1. As time has gone on, the amount of zooid types has increased.[13] 2. The last common ancestor had many types of zooids and the diversity seen today is due to loss of zooid types.[13] Research shows no evidence supporting the first hypothesis, and has seen some evidence in support of the second.[13] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siphonophorae
  8. The Lexus GX, the brand's mid-size, off-road SUV, has been overdue for a redesign, and it's finally happened for the 2024 model year. Riding on an all-new platform with an updated powertrain and a load of more modern features, the new GX550's rugged appearance is about the only thing that ties it to its outdated forbear. The new model's boxy, Land Cruiser-inspired exterior looks like it will age well—a good thing since the GX has a history of lengthy product cycles. The 2024 GX550 rides on the same body-on-frame platform as the Toyota Sequoia and the Toyota Tundra and will be available with a twin-turbo V-6 powertrain—offered with and without hybrid assist—rather than the V-8 of the outgoing model. It slots into the Lexus SUV lineup between the flagship LX luxury off-roader and the TX SUV, the latter of which is similar in size but focused more on interior space and on-road refinement. The GX has two personalities: luxury on-roader or trail-conquering off-roader. For buyers who plan to spend the majority of their time on asphalt, we'd suggest the Luxury trim, as it classes up the GX550's interior with plenty of nice-to-have features, including semi-aniline leather upholstery, 10-way adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation, illuminated door sill plates, and second-row window shades. It also comes with larger 22-inch wheels which better fill the GX's large wheel wells for a more upscale look. For the same price, the Overtrail+ trim provides a more rugged appearance and more capability for off-roading, but the compromise is that it eliminates the GX's third row of seats and some of the luxury items listed above. But if you're planning outdoor adventures, it is worth consideration. 2024 Lexus GX Review, Pricing, and Specs

  10. Washington — Sen. JD Vance of Ohio and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz — both relative newcomers to the national political spotlight — were facing off Tuesday in the only scheduled vice presidential debate before the November election. The debate was being held three weeks after former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris had their only scheduled debate. Walz, who is Harris' running mate, has had a long career in politics but was largely unknown to voters outside of Minnesota before he joined the Democratic ticket. Vance, the author of "Hillbilly Elegy," was first elected to office in 2022, less than two years before being selected by Trump to be his running mate. Here's what to know about the debate. What time will the VP debate start and end? The debate started at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday. It will run 90 minutes — the same length as the two presidential debates — and end at 10:30 p.m. ET. Who is moderating the VP debate? "CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell and "Face the Nation" moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate. Where is the VP debate? The debate is taking place at the CBS Broadcast Center in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City in Midtown Manhattan. The debate is in Studio 45 at the Broadcast Center. After the debate, campaign surrogates and the press will go to the spin room in Studio 42, another studio in the 800,000-square-foot Broadcast Center. Members of the media will be watching the debate and filing their stories from a press pen set up in the cafeteria. Until this summer, Studio 45 was where "Inside Edition" was filmed. "Captain Kangaroo" was also taped in Studio 45 from 1964-1981. CBS News moved into the facility in 1964, and Walter Cronkite broadcast the 1964 election results from Studio 41, which is now home to the "Drew Barrymore Show." Before relocating to the CBS Broadcast Center, CBS was located in the Grand Central Terminal building. The giant studios and sound stages have been home to several soap operas, including "As the World Turns" in Studio 41 and "Guiding Light" in Studio 42. "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" currently films at Studio 42. In the early 1980s, CBS added 176,400 square feet to the 500,000-square-foot building as part of a $100 million update. The CBS Broadcast Center home to CBS News 24/7, , CBS New York (WCBS-TV) and several other corporate and third-party productions. It's also the distribution center for the CBS Television Network. What are the rules for the debate? Both campaigns agreed to a 90-minute debate with two four-minute commercial breaks. Campaign staff are not allowed to interact with the candidates during the breaks. There will be no audience — a measure also implemented during the two previous presidential debates. At the event's start, the moderators will introduce the candidates in order of the incumbent party, with Walz coming first. There will be no opening statements. Walz will stand behind the lectern on the left side of the stage, which will be on the right side of viewers' screens. Vance will be at the podium on the right side of the stage, but the left side of screens. Candidates, who cannot bring pre-written notes or props on stage, will have two minutes to answer a question and two minutes to respond. They will be allowed one minute for rebuttals. At the moderators' discretion, candidates may get an additional minute to continue a discussion. Unlike the presidential debates, a candidate's microphone will not be muted when their opponent is speaking, but CBS News reserves the right to turn off the microphones. Vance won a virtual coin toss on Thursday, opting to go second with his closing statement. Each candidate will have two minutes for their closing remarks. No topics or questions will be shared with the campaigns in advance. Tim Walz and JD Vance's 2024 VP debate is tonight. Here's what to know. - CBS News

  12. A poorly maintained and overcrowded bus veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in northern India on Monday, killing at least 36 people and injuring several others, officials said. The accident occurred in Almora district in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand. The bus was carrying around 60 people, and more than 20 have been injured, said Deepak Rawat, a senior state government official. Authorities said earlier they believed there were 42 passengers, which was how many people the bus could accommodate. Teams of rescue and relief workers were deployed to the site and officials feared the death toll may rise further, especially as seven passengers in hospital were in critical condition. People gather around the wreckage of a bus that caught fire along the Samruddhi Expressway near Sindkhed Raja in Buldhana district of Maharashtra state on July 1, 2023. At least 25 people were killed and eight others injured after a bus caught fire overnight on an expressway in India's Maharashtra state, police said on July 1. Television footage showed parts of the bus mangled and destroyed as it lay overturned on a rocky slope, close to a stream. Rescuers were seen working to pull out passengers and carrying bodies on stretchers. The state’s chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami earlier said rescue teams were working to quickly evacuate the injured passengers to nearby hospitals and that authorities have been instructed to airlift those seriously hurt. The state government has opened an investigation into the accident, said Vineet Pal, another official in the state. He added that preliminary information suggested that the dilapidated bus skidded before tumbling down a 60 meter- (200-foot-) -deep gorge. A number of passengers managed to escape or were thrown out by the impact, and then alerted authorities about the accident. Two transport officials have been suspended for approving a bus that was in poor condition, Pal said. India has some of the highest road death rates in the world, with hundreds of thousands of people killed and injured annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles. In July, at least 18 people died after a double-decker passenger bus collided with a milk truck in Uttar Pradesh state. In May, a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims skidded and rolled into a deep gorge on a mountainous highway in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing at least 21 people.
