If you like vaporware and looking at phones and gadgets you’ll never own, then Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the trade show for you. This week’s annual menagerie revealed new devices like the TCL Nxtpaper 14 and a working model of Motorola’s rolling phone display. Other brands—namely Samsung—used the venue to tease us about a product that likely won’t see the light of day until much later this year. We also caught a glimpse of Lenovo’s new see-through ThinkBook concept laptop. The industry seems primarily focused on improving what’s already out on the market, but you can see that concepts were king at this year’s trade show. has introduced the imc FAMOS 2024 data analysis software, which delivers user experience enhancements and updates to its data analysis features for engineers, researchers and technicians in the automotive, mechanical, railway, aerospace and other industries. New features to the software include the Start Page, where users can launch and customize numerous FAMOS wizards and tools; and a new data analysis function directly within the curve window, useful for quick evaluation while handling large data sets and formatting options for polar diagrams. The new functions have been designed to simplify the processing of large data sets, from visualization and analysis to creating professional reports. FAMOS tools and wizards, such as FAMOS code for import/export filters, Python or R code, or templates for GUI elements, can be directly accessed, and the customized the start page provides direct access to instructive demo projects. Frequently used sequences and project files can also be individually linked to the page. The new data analysis function can be used to select individual data segments within the window and calculate them with standard functions, which enables interactive browsing and faster insights into the displayed data sets. Further formatting options can also be used for polar diagrams to improve the visualization of acoustic data, directional characteristics, wind energy or rotationally symmetric structures. Text data and arrays from applications in which text elements occur in measurement data, such as diagnostic or error messages or fieldbus data, can also be edited and displayed with the software. Damian Hurschler, team leader for flight test instrumentation at the Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft, said, “imc FAMOS allows new users to quickly learn the basics of viewing measurement data, getting an overview and assessing its quality. Measurement data can be transferred directly from imcSTUDIO to imc FAMOS, displayed in a variety of ways with just a few simple steps, and automatically used for calculations with sequences. Apple fans looking forward to new Macs or iPads at WWDC 2024 should prepare themselves for disappointment. Despite the small number of releases out of Cupertino so far this year and the long list of products waiting for an update, a respected analyst has predicted that the event will not see any hardware announcements at all. The prediction comes from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. Gurman told subscribers (via MacRumors) that “there’s no hardware slated to be announced at WWDC, unless Apple unexpectedly previews a new device launching later (to be clear: I don’t expect that).” To be clear, the idea that Apple would hold a WWDC with no hardware is not in itself a massive surprise; of the past 10 WWDCs, precisely half have focused on software only. It’s more that Apple’s 2024 has been light on product announcements so far: just the two new iPads (Air and Pro) in May, and the M3 MacBook Air back in March. We’re still expecting updates this year to the Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, iMac or iMac Pro, iPad and iPad mini, AirPods, HomePod (possibly with a screen), and Apple TV–and that’s leaving aside the iPhone and Apple Watch updates that are nailed on for the fall. There had been hopes, not least among followers of Gurman’s bulletins, that a new Apple TV would be announced this month: he previously said Apple hoped to refresh the Apple TV in the first half of 2024. But the same writer now says that a launch “isn’t imminent.” Neither would it appear that Apple has immediate plans to release new models of the standard iPad or iPad mini, both of which are sorely in need of an update. The most likely hardware launch for WWDC 2024, however, is a new Mac. The event is nominally focused on software updates, but Apple will frequently take the opportunity to announce a new desktop or laptop, with high-end pro models particularly of interest. At WWDC 2023 the company announced the M2 Max/Ultra Mac Studio and the M2 Ultra Mac Pro, along with the 15-inch MacBook Air. (Not to mention Vision Pro.) The summer before we got the two Macs based on the then-new M2 chip, as well as a redesigned MacBook Air and a new 13-inch MacBook Pro. Of those 10 WWDCs, the other half all featured Mac announcements of one kind or another. Still, even without hardware news, this month’s WWDC is set to be a big one. Indeed it’s possible that Apple is holding back on product launches so that viewers can really concentrate on its first steps into the world of AI, with Project Greymatter bringing new functions to iOS and macOS, and AI making its big entrance into Apple’s ecosystem. When was the XDefiant release date? If you’re a huge fan of all things Ubisoft, particularly the Tom Clancy games, you may get a kick out of this new free-to-play first-person arena shooter. Its five vs. five matches promised fast-paced objective-based gameplay with Ubisoft characters, complete with unique abilities to turn the tide of battle.So, how does XDefiant work? It’s an FPS game similar to Call of Duty and Overwatch, but its roster comprises character factions based on some of Ubisoft’s back catalog, each with its own set of abilities to aid them in battle. Ubisoft has invested time in a few free PC games in recent years, and now XDefiant is finally here.XDefiant had seen numerous delays in the past. It was originally scheduled for release with a preseason during Summer 2023. However, it was indefinitely delayed as the first submission to Sony and Xbox failed, and the team has been scrambling ever since. On September 11, 2023, XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin posted a statement online about why the company hasn’t provided a concrete release date yet, citing a failed submission as one of the reasons. XDefiant was delayed again from an initial window of March 2024, this time without hinting when it will officially launch. This is due to feedback from a Public Test Session where “inconsistencies in the game experience” were found “that we need to address prior to launching our preseason.” However, there was some encouraging news about when we would find out more. XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin posted on X (formerly Twitter) a list of findings from the recent server test session. He later summarized that post by saying, “The server test session went really well from a scale and server standpoint. We have some tuning to do. Pretty straightforward stuff that will be done very soon if not done already.
