  1. More than 130,000 people in England will be offered free workplace health checks in the next six months under a new initiative to try and prevent heart disease. From September, employees in several sectors including building and hospitality will be able to access quick assessments that will determine their risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), which can cause heart attacks and strokes. Those aged between 40 and 74 who do not have certain pre-existing conditions linked to heart disease will be eligible. According to the government, these checks will save thousands of hours of NHS time and will help to cut waiting lists. The scheme is an effort to increase the number of NHS Health Checks, first introduced in 2009, that are carried out. As well as targting heart disease, the programme aims to prevent diabetes and kidney disease, as well as some cases of dementia among adults. Health minister Andrew Gwynne said that while over 16 million people were eligible for the check, current data showed only 40% went on to complete one. "This is especially true for men, who are less likely to get early help but who are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease at an earlier age than women," he said. "This new programme aims to reach more people through their place of work and make it more convenient for people to understand and improve their cardiovascular health." People taking part will be required to answer a short lifestyle questionnaire; have their height, weight, and waist measured; undergo a blood pressure test; and have a simple blood test to measure cholesterol and blood sugar levels. The checks will also record key information including smoking status; family history of coronary heart disease; and cholesterol level. They are part of government efforts to boost economic growth in the UK by improving healthcare. “Health checks can save lives. They can prevent people from developing largely preventable diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, Type 2 diabetes and liver disease," said Louise Gittins, chair of the Local Government Association. Plans for a digital version of the NHS Health Check have also been announced, with testing for this due to take place next year. Councils in Norfolk, Medway and the London borough of Lambeth have signed up for the trial. It is estimated the initiative will deliver one million checks in its first four years and there are plans to then roll it out nationally alongside face-to-face assessments. CVD is a leading cause of death and disability in England. It accounts for 1 in 4 deaths in England, according to NHS figures, despite being largely preventable if people lead a healthy lifestyle. 2. A mother and her three daughters were among seven people killed in Ukraine's western city of Lviv, during a fresh wave of Russian attacks. A baby and another girl were also killed, officials said. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said Russia had attacked with drones and hypersonic missiles early on Wednesday. The attack came as Ukraine reeled from Russia's deadliest single bombardment this year - a strike on a military institute in the central city of Poltava that left 53 people dead. Explosions were also heard on Wednesday over the capital Kyiv as air defences targeted Russian missiles. Five people were wounded in Kryvyy Rih when a hotel was hit and nearby blocks of flats were damaged. The attack on Lviv in the far west of Ukraine came as all of Ukraine was under air raid alert. Witnesses said the city was targeted at about 05:40 (02:40 GMT). Russia's defence ministry said it had fired Kinzhal hypersonic weapons at Ukrainian defence industry facilities in Lviv and that all designated targets had been hit. However, Mr Sadovy said Russia's attack had damaged more than 50 buildings in the historic heart of Lviv, including homes, schools and clinics. He posted a picture on social media of a local family, saying that only the father had survived. His wife, Yevgenia, and their three daughters - Darina, Emilia and 21-year-old Yaryna - all died in their own home, he said. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpqj35jv3e7o
  3. The free TV company Telly has started shipping its ad-supported TVs to its first wave of customers. Telly first opened its waitlist in May and plans on shipping 500,000 free TVs to customers by the end of 2023 — and “millions more” in 2024. Unlike most TVs, beneath Telly’s 55-inch 4K display is a smaller screen separated from the main display by a soundbar. That thinner display is dedicated to showing advertisements, which is the point of its business To even use the thing, you’ll need to commit to having your viewing data sucked up and used by advertisers. If you’re okay with that, you can also use the secondary display to show widgets that surface sports scores, a news sticker, the weather, and more. The TV features a camera (with a privacy shutter) for fitness programs as well, along with a set of built-in games. Additionally, Telly announced that it’s working with Nielsen to “collect and interpret first-of-its-kind viewership and ad effectiveness insights” for advertisers and TV programmers. It’s also working with Microsoft, Magnite, and MNTN to power the ads on the TV. Microsoft became Netflix’s advertising partner for its new ad-supported tier last year. It’s not clear how many customers Telly is shipping its TVs out to during this round, but it says those who receive the device will get to participate in the public beta program. That means they’ll also get access to some of the features Telly is making available at launch, including integrations with Spotify, LiveOne, and Zoom. While Telly’s system doesn’t let you install any streaming apps, it still ships with a Google TV dongle. You can also use it with a Roku device, Amazon Fire Stick, or Apple TV. “We are thrilled to begin shipping what is by far the smartest television ever built to consumers,” Telly CEO and founder Ilya Pozin said in a statement. “Our disruptive ad supported business model makes the television completely free to consumers, but the most exciting thing about Telly is the technology that enables our dual-screen television to get better with every update.” Even though you’ll have to sacrifice a part of your privacy to use Telly, a free TV might be too hard to pass up for some. One month after Telly opened up its waitlist, 250,000 people already signed up, and I’m guessing that number has increased since then. https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/13/23793525/telly-free-4k-tv-advertising-dual-screen
  4. What a CPU does is execute the instructions of a program located in a memory. But did you know that they all follow the same general rules? They all follow the same instruction cycle, which is divided into three distinct stages called Fetch, Decode, and Execute, which are translated as fetch, decode, and execute. We explain how these stages work and how they are organized. In order to simplify and make the concepts explained in this article more understandable, we have decided to describe an extremely simple processor for these times, so in this article you will see an explanation of what instruction cycles are in a general way that can be apply from the first 8-bit processors to the most complex ones that exist today. The processors are not different from a certain point of view to a combustion engine, which always carry out a continuous process of fuel explosion in different stages, whether they are 2-stroke or 4-stroke. The reason for this is that the processors work in three different stages in their simplest version, which are the following: Fetch or Capture: In which the instruction is captured from RAM memory and copied into the processor. Decode or Decoding: In which the previously captured instruction is decoded and sent to the execution units. Execute or Execution: Where the instruction is resolved and the result written in the internal registers of the processor or in a memory address of RAM. These three stages are fulfilled in every processor, there is a fourth stage which is Write-Back which is when the execution units write the result, but normally this is counted within the execution stage of the instruction cycle. The first stage of the instruction cycle is responsible for capturing the instructions that are in the RAM memory assigned to the processor through a series of units and registers that are the following: Program Counter or Program Counter: Which points to the next memory line where the next processor instruction is located. Its value is incremented by 1 each time a complete instruction cycle is completed or when a jump instruction changes the value of the program counter. Memory Address Register or memory address register: The MAR copies the contents of the PC and sends it to RAM through the address pins of the CPU, which are wired with the address pins of the RAM itself. Memory Data Register or memory data register: In the event that the CPU has to perform a memory reading, what the MDR does is copy the content of that memory address to an internal register of the CPU, which is a temporary step register before its contents are copied to the Instruction Register. The MDR, contrary to the MAR, is connected to the data pins of the RAM and not to the address pins, and in the case of a write instruction, the content of what is to be written in the RAM is also written in the MDR Instruction Register or Instruction Register: The final part of the capture or fetch stage is the writing of the instruction in the instruction register, from which the processor control unit will copy its content for the second stage of the instruction cycle. These 4 sub-stages occur in all processors regardless of their utility, architecture and binary compatibility or what we call ISA https://hardzone.es/tutoriales/rendimiento/ciclo-instruccion-cpu/
  5. Lenovo's next-gen Ideapad laptop with AMD's Ryzen AI 9 365 "Strix" APU has been tested and ends up 9% faster than Ryzen 9 8945HS. AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 "Strix" APU Configured Within Lenovo Ideapad Laptop Is 9% Faster Than Ryzen 9 8945HS AMD's Ryzen AI 300 "Strix Point" APUs have leaked in various laptops and now, we have a new leak that comes from within a Lenovo Ideapad laptop. The laptop was spotted in the Geekbench bench-mark and features 32 GB of LPDDR5x memory. This specific model is titled the "LENOVO 83HN" & based on the motherboard model, we can tell that this would be an Ideapad SKU (LNVNB161216). The AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 "Strix Point" APU is a 10-core and 20-thread part with a boost clock of up to 5.0 GHz, 34 MB of cache, and a Radeon 880M iGPU with a total of 12 compute units or 768 cores. This chip comes with four Zen 5 and six Zen 5C cores. It features the XDNA 2 hardware delivering up to 50 TOPS of AI performance. The AMD Ryzen AI 300 APUs can scale from 15W, all the way up to 54W. Coming to the performance figures, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 APU scored 2544 points in the single-core and 12,745 points in the multi-core tests. The performance was evaluated using the Balanced mode profile within the operating system. It should also be mentioned that the chip never went above 4.5 GHz throughout its test run which shows that either this Lenovo laptop is using an early sample or it remains to be tuned. The performance numbers indicate a 7% jump in single-core and a 9% jump in multi-core scores versus the Ryzen 9 8945HS. While these are decent gains, we can expect much more performance when the AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 runs at its full potential. Also, the TDP will play a major role so if this was conducted at a low TDP in the 15-28W range, then the scores are good but we still expect the final 5 GHz boost clocks to yield double-digit gains. Regardless, it's great to see that another laptop manufacturer has shown up with its next-gen laptops based on the AMD Ryzen AI 300 "Strix Point" family. So far, we have seen ASUS & Acer laptops in the benchmarks with Lenovo making its entry today. We can expect more laptops to show up in the coming days as we approach the launch which is now scheduled for 28th July. https://wccftech.com/lenovo-ideapad-laptop-amd-ryzen-ai-9-365-strix-apu-benchmarked/
  6. A Honkai: Star Rail leak has revealed the in-game animations for one of the most anticipated characters, Mechanical Aristocrat Screwllum I, more commonly known as just Screwllum. Since Honkai: Star Rail was released in April 2023, its roster has grown considerably, with each update introducing new playable units. The ongoing Honkai: Star Rail update 2.3 has introduced the long-awaited Firefly, who arrived as part of the first limited banner. She is joined by the Harmony character Ruan Mei, who received her first banner re-run. The second banner phase is reserved for the new Erudition character Jade and the multi-target DPS, Argenti. Screwllum has already made an appearance in Honkai: Star Rail's main storyline, where he was introduced as a mechanical lifeform and the leader of the resistance against Genius Society #27, Rubert I, to protect organic lifeforms and secure peace for similar mechanical beings. Screwllum is also known as member #76 of the Genius Society, who lives on Planet Screwllum. A new post by a Honkai: Star Rail leaker named fireflylover has revealed the in-game animations for Screwllum, seeming to show his emote or menu animations. It should be noted that the data was taken before Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.0, meaning that HoYoverse could have made changes to his model since then. Source

  13. Concepts were key at this year’s international mobile trade show, including a few devices that will likely never see the light of day. https://qz.com/mwc-2024-mobile-world-congress-announcements-tech-gadge-1851293992 If you like vaporware and looking at phones and gadgets you’ll never own, then Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the trade show for you. This week’s annual menagerie revealed new devices like the TCL Nxtpaper 14 and a working model of Motorola’s rolling phone display. Other brands—namely Samsung—used the venue to tease us about a product that likely won’t see the light of day until much later this year. We also caught a glimpse of Lenovo’s new see-through ThinkBook concept laptop. The industry seems primarily focused on improving what’s already out on the market, but you can see that concepts were king at this year’s trade show. Check out the slideshow above to see some of the more exciting news from MWC 2024 this week.
  14. https://www.wired.com/story/apple-wwdc-2024-what-to-expect/ Conference has always been the event where the company announces new software capabilities for its devices. However, over the last few years, the software news out of WWDC has been upstaged by hardware announcements. Rather than focusing on apps at recent WWDCs, Apple has used the gathering as an opportunity to unveil its M-series Apple Silicon chips, next-generation Macs, and most recently, the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. But this year, Apple pushed its hardware announcements out ahead of WWDC. In April, the company launched the M3-powered MacBook Air (13-inch and 15-inch). In May, it released an all-new M4 chip, along with the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air. With no additional hardware expected at the conference this year, it looks like WWDC will once again focus strictly on new software features—specifically new artificial intelligence capabilities for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. We'll find out when WWDC 2024 kicks off with a keynote address at 10 am Pacific time on Monday, June 10. The Apple WWDC 2024 keynote will be livestreamed on Monday, June 10, starting at 1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific. You can watch it via Apple's site or on its official YouTube channel. We'll be running a WWDC live blog right here on WIRED. Be sure to join us approximately half an hour before the keynote starts to follow along with our live updates from the event.
  15. https://www.techradar.com/computing/computex-2024 Computex 2024 took place in Taipei, Taiwan from Tuesday, June 4, until Friday, June 7, 2024 – which means this year's show has ended. TechRadar was on the ground this year reporting on all the latest news, announcements, and product showcases from industry titans like AMD, Nvidia, Asus, MSI, and many more. On this page, you'll find all the latest news, hands-on, and analysis, so bookmark this page and catch all the latest news and previews. Computex 2024 officially kicked off on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, and ran until Friday, June 7, 2024. Unlike Computex 2023, the conference opened with a keynote from AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su, who has traditionally opened Computex events in the past, although she was bumped last year for Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Qualcomm and Intel also had major keynote addresses as well, and unsurprisingly the AI PC theme that we've seen throughout 2024 has also been a big theme at Computex 2024. Beyond that, we expect other manufacturers to announce new products from companies big and small such as Asus, Acer, AMD, Intel, Gigabyte, MSI, Nvidia, and many more throughout the week. There's plenty of exciting news that came out of Taipei, especially revolving around AI PCs and software. We've also seen tons of other hardware and software announcements and demos, new accessories and toys to look forward to, and a host of other wonderful and sometimes weird finds.
