  4. New legislation to protect service animals such as police dogs and horses will come into force today (Saturday 8 June). The Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Bill, known as ‘Finn’s Law’, will prevent those who attack or injure service animals from claiming self-defence. The law is named after Finn, a police dog who was stabbed whilst pursuing a suspect with his handler PC David Wardell. Finn sustained serious stab wounds to the chest and head, but only criminal damage charges could be brought against his attacker. This new legislation, coupled with the government’s plans to increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty offences to five years in prison, will make sure those who harm service animals are punished accordingly. According to the group which led the campaign for this law, more than 100 other service animals have been injured since 2012. This includes injuries such as being beaten with an iron bar, kicked or hit by a car. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said: This law is about giving our service animals the protection they deserve as they dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. I am committed to making the UK the best place in the world for the care and protection of animals. Congratulations to all those who have campaigned to make Finn’s Law a reality and to Sir Oliver Heald for campaigning for this from the start. PC David Wardell said: The last two-and-a-half years have been quite a journey of discovery for Finn and me. We decided that we just had to bring change to make sure our amazing service animals, including police dogs and horses, had protection in law. We wanted to bring as much positivity from that one negative as we could. The campaign was run positively on me and my family’s request and it was wonderful to see so many thousands of people getting involved. Clearly our service animals are held in high regard, as they should be. We must now make sure we follow up this amazing news on #FinnsLaw with #FinnsLawPart2, the increase in sentencing, as soon as possible. Sir Oliver Heald, MP for North East Hertfordshire, said: I am very pleased that the measure which began 18 months ago as my Ten Minute Rule Bill was so strongly supported by colleagues across the House that it is now on the statute book. I pay great tribute to the Campaign Team, Sarah Dixon, Nicola Skelley and, above all, my constituent PC Dave Wardell and the marvellous Finn. From today, service animals and their handlers have the legal recognition they deserve. This law coming into force follows the recent introduction of legislation in Parliament to achieve Lucy’s Law. This will ban the third-party sales of puppies and kittens and, alongside our other reforms, including introducing mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses, will help to cement the UK’s position as a global leader on animal welfare. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/finns-law-delivered-to-protect-brave-service-animals
  5. When Karen Garcia awoke suddenly at 4 a.m. last week, the room was spinning. Garcia, a mother of three who lives in Los Banos, Calif., was 35 weeks pregnant, and throughout her pregnancy, she has had vertigo. “The further along I get, the more I experience it,” said Garcia, 33, noting that she is on medication to help her symptoms — which usually works well. On the morning of Oct. 19, though, it did not. “Everything was turning. It was terrible,” she recalled. “It was a very strong vertigo episode that I hadn’t experienced in a long time.” Her husband, who commutes roughly three hours each way daily to the San Francisco area, had already left for his construction job. Garcia was home alone with her three children, ages 11, 9 and 8 — all of whom were asleep. Although she took her vertigo medication, she said, she couldn’t keep it down and was vomiting for several hours. “It was nonstop,” she said. By the time her children woke up around 7 a.m., “I had no strength in my body left,” Garcia said. “I was on my bathroom floor.” Her three children sprang to action. Garcia called 911, and — since she had no energy to talk — her children gave the dispatcher the details. “They were so amazing,” she said. “I could hear them frantically trying to help me.” Before long, a crew of emergency responders arrived at the scene, including Brian Thompson, a captain with the Los Banos Fire Department. Thompson and his colleagues quickly saw that Garcia was in medical distress. They called an ambulance, which took her to the Memorial Hospital Los Banos Emergency Department. Then, they turned their attention to the children, who were scared and upset. “They were definitely worried about mom,” Thompson said. “They were distraught.” Garcia and her family moved last year to Los Banos from Gilroy, Calif., which is about 48 miles away, and all of her relatives still live there. Garcia’s brother immediately headed over to the house to look after the children — but it would take him at least an hour to get there. In the meantime, Thompsons’s crew — which included two other firefighters — decided to wait with the three kids. They were on the phone with Garcia’s husband, who was “very concerned,” Thompson said, “and I reassured him we will be here until somebody gets here; we’ll treat them like they’re ours.” “I would hope that somebody would do that for my children and for my wife,” said Thompson, 54, a father of six. “It really does take a village. We all have to look out for one another.” Thompson decided his best option was to distract the children. “I asked the kids what their morning ritual was,” Thompson said. He started by serving them orange juice. After that, it was on to breakfast. “I got them involved to take out the toaster, the sugar and the cinnamon,” he said. “They helped me make them cinnamon sugar toast.” In a matter of minutes, the kids’ moods shifted, he said. “They were all over the house playing and showing us their toys and artwork,” Thompson said. “They were excited that the firemen were there making them breakfast.” “It took their mom off their minds,” he added. As the oldest member of the fire department, Thompson said, he tries to set an example for younger crew members. “I’m really trying to instill this belief that you should always be compassionate when doing your job,” he said. Once the children finished eating breakfast, the firefighters checked that their backpacks were packed and ready for school. About 30 minutes into being there, the firefighters got an emergency call, and a Los Banos Police Department officer arrived to continue looking after the children until their uncle came a short time later to take them to school. The officer watched cartoons with the kids. Garcia, who was released from the hospital around 6 p.m. that day, has recovered from the episode. “You can’t ask for anything more when you’re going through something like that than for someone to step in and distract your kids from what’s going on,” she said. “It was really a team effort on their part.” She said she is now feeling fine and the baby is healthy. But she’s going to be sure this doesn’t happen again. “We have a plan in place,” she said. “My family is not leaving me alone.” A family member now stays with her at all times in the event she has another severe vertigo episode. When Garcia was reunited with her children that evening, they were as chatty as ever. “They were so excited to tell me about their morning,” she said. “They had totally forgotten that I was sick.” She credits the emergency personnel for making that possible. The Los Banos Fire Department later shared a Facebook post with a photo of Thompson making the children breakfast, and praise poured in. The story was first reported by Eyewitness News 3. Although the ordeal was traumatic, Garcia said, she feels fortunate that her children were in good hands while she was not there. “I couldn’t have asked for a better crew to show up,” she said. “I’m so grateful." https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/10/28/firefighters-breakfast-children-ambulance-thompson/

  7. If you’ve ever downloaded a 7-Zip file or RAR file (archive file formats that allow users to compress files to more portable, smaller sizes), you will probably find that you need an extra program or app or do something with them in Windows 11, but that’s about to change. Microsoft has announced native (as in, built-in) support for 7-Zip file and RAR file formats in Windows 11 22H2. According to BleepingComputer, Microsoft has stated that Windows 11 22H2 can now support almost a dozen archive file formats that it couldn’t before without a third-party app or program such as RAR, 7-Zip, Tar, and GZ archives. This update came as part of October’s optional KB5031455 Preview cumulative update. This means to have this new archive file capability, you’ll need to go to Settings, then to Windows Update, and select ‘Check for Updates’. Once your device finds the new optional update, click the ‘Download and install’ button. That means Windows 11 will soon support all of the following archive file types: .rar, .7z, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.zst, .tar.xz, .tgz, .tbz2, .tzst, and .txz. Password-encrypted files aren’t covered in this update, but that will come soon. BleepingComputer asked Microsoft about the lack of password-protected archive support, but Microsoft had nothing to share at this time. This development was first announced during the Build 2023 conference back in a May blog post that detailed Microsoft’s new Dev Home Windows control center. Reportedly, Microsoft enlisted the open-source libarchive project, a library of file archive and file compression formats. Apparently, this open-source project also allows users to enable support for the LZH and XAR file formats, so we could see in-house Windows 11 support for these as well. If you’re familiar with the .gz archive file format, you’re probably a Linux user familiar with the GNU Zip (gzip) utility. This new Windows support for this file format will be helpful to those using the Windows Subsystem for Linux.Again, if you’d like this new capability for Windows 11 right now, you’ll need to manually install it. Otherwise you can wait until November’s Patch Tuesday, when there is a scheduled Windows 11 cumulative update. Either way, you will get all the new Moment 4 update features which includes a whopping seventy two new features for Windows 11 like a revamped File Explorer, a renewed Backup app, a new Passkey Manager, and the shiny jewel of the update, Windows Copilot. This is a welcome update, especially since the ZIP, 7-Zip, and RAR archive formats are widely used by users of Windows systems past and present. Since 1998, Windows has had native system support for ZIP archive files, and it’s good to see 7-Zip (.7z), RAR (.rar), and gz (.gz) files, get support in Windows 11, which should make using those files much easier - and means you won’t need to install any extra applications. https://www.techradar.com/computing/software/microsoft-steps-up-its-windows-11-file-management-game-get-ready-to-say-goodbye-to-winrar-and-and-zip
  8. AMD's Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU finally sees its DIY debut in European markets after months of limited availability through system integrators. AMD's Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU Hits DIY Market In Europe, 100 Euros More Expensive Than 7800 XTThe AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) was introduced in China a few months ago as a global launch. AMD disclosed that the Radeon RX 7900 GRE global availability will be confined to "selected" PC builders only, which disappointed several users who wanted to get hold of the GPU as they had to purchase a whole PC to get the card. However, after being sold in pre-built PCs for a good few months, the GPU is finally available in DIY in Europe. AMD's Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU has been listed by individual retailers in Spain and Romania, suggesting that the DIY availability is indeed promising in the region. In terms of pricing, the Spanish retailer PCComponentes has listed the GPU at €719.90 / USD $761, while the Romanian retailer PCGarage is selling the GPU at 3.699,99 RON/ USD $787. AMD disclosed a USD $649 MSRP of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE at launch, hence the above-mentioned listings are certainly quite higher. However, it is relatively still better priced than the higher-end AMD offerings from the same store. If we talk about specifications, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE features a cut-down Navi 31 GPU with 80 RDNA 3 compute units or 5120 stream processors which is slightly reduced versus the 7900 XT with 84 compute units or 5376 stream processors along with a slimmed-down VRAM and memory configuration of 256-bit along with 16 GB GDDR6 capacities. The card is meant to compete against NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 Ti which retails at a higher price point of $799 US. An important point to note is that since AMD "officially" doesn't sell the Radeon RX 7900 GRE separately in the global markets, the stores currently offering the GPU are importing it in bulk from China, which is why it won't come with the traditional AMD packaging, rather an ordinary box, which is usually for replacement GPUs. Moreover, the T&C regarding the warranty from AMD hasn't been defined yet for global regions, but the Spanish retailer is offering a complete 2-year warranty, hence you shouldn't be hesitant opting for the GPU. https://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-rx-7900-gre-gpu-diy-availability-europe-prices-starting-at-e720/
  9. In 2019, Grinding Gear Games gave us our first look at Path of Exile 2, and with the exception of a couple of small teasers, we've heard almost nothing about it since then. It was supposed to be a sequel akin to Overwatch 2—originally not really a new game per se, but more like a giant patch or remaster that would update the game with new graphics, content, and systems. At ExileCon this year, all that got blown up. Path of Exile 2 is a separate game, and it's a true sequel set 20 years after the original. I for one can't wait. We learned a ton about GGG's new baby during the keynote presentation, so let's get into it. Two games, one Path The story of Path of Exile 2 is one of scope creep. It all started with a desire to update some ancient (2007ish) character models. Then, as game director Jonathan Rogers described it, it became a series of fun projects. 'Why don't we update the models' became 'Why don't we update Act 1' became 'Why don't we fix the way skill gems work' became 'Aww screw it let's make a new game.' "We realized that our plan to replace PoE 1 with PoE 2 would essentially be destroying a game that people love for no reason, so we made a decision," Rogers said in the keynote. "Path of Exile 1 and 2 will be separate, with their own mechanics, balance, endgame, and leagues." What this means for us as players is essentially twice the Path of Exile. Both games will run concurrently, with a league each every three months (a new league every month and a half for sickos like me who will almost certainly play both). Rest assured, however, that your beloved stash tabs and Righteous Fire skins won't be going to waste. Your impossible to craft legacy six-links in Standard won't be retconned to have funny new gem links, and anything you purchase in the future will be usable in both games (unless it's something like a shapeshifting werebear skin, 'cause that's not in PoE 1). https://www.pcgamer.com/path-of-exile-2-preview-6-new-classes-first-details/
