  1. Exotic animals, ghost towns and Stonehenge feature in our weekly picture round-up of Wiltshire. A critically-endangered monkey was born at Longleat Safari Park, while four rare tiger cubs were introduced to the outside world for the first time. On Saturday, buses took people to visit an abandoned village in Wiltshire for one day only.https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqxjey20p1xo
  2. The 2025 McLaren 750S enters the new model year with minimal changes. The lightweight supercar doesn't change mechanically but does add new customization options through McLaren's Special Operations division. McLaren is also celebrating its connection to racing by switching the start/stop button to the famous Papaya orange. It's been three years since McLaren discontinued the thrilling 720S supercar and introduced the equally exotic 750S. As the lightweight exotic sports car moves into its second model year, McLaren is playing things safe and moving forward without too many changes. While there aren't many physical changes to the car, McLaren has increased the level of customizability. Customers who spend over $320,000 for a car expect a high level of customization, so starting with the 2025 model year, 750S buyers have that option through McLaren's Special Operations division. There are 12 pre-configured content packs that can be optioned while ordering the car, though the automaker will let you stray from the beaten path—assuming you're willing to pay for it. The first contrast pack opens a new suite of paint options that includes: Volcano Red, Volcano Orange, Anniversary Orange, Solar Yellow, Napier Green, XP Green, Tokyo Pearl, Viola Viola, Dove Grey, Soho Grey, Tarmac Black, and Alaskan Diamond White. The new exterior colors are paired with matching or contrasting brake calipers and mirror colors, depending on the chosen option. The second contrast pack adds customization options to the interior, including the choice of a full Alcantara cabin, complete with colorful accents and motifs for the headrests. Other changes include a new Stealth badging option to make McLaren badging around the car black while the Speedmark on each center cap turns black. Body color carbon-fiber front fenders and glossy carbon-fiber louvers also join the options list. A new Papaya orange start/stop button rounds out changes. Mechanically, the 750S carries on unchanged, but that's not a bad thing. The twin-turbo V-8 engine mounted behind the cabin pumps out 740 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the rear axle through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. We haven't yet had the chance to strap our test equipment to a 750S, but we expect the launch to 60 mph to take around 2.5 seconds. Stay tuned. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a61947467/2025-mclaren-750s-new-mso-options/
  3. Manchester United’s late 1-0 victory over Fulham in last Friday’s season opener showed concerning similarities with last year’s travails. Better were the crisp phases of passing and intelligent movement during the first half, but then came a falling away of shape, of dismal finishing – Bruno Fernandes being a chief culprit – and the reliance, again, on a moment rather than in-game domination to claim victory: the substitute Joshua Zirkzee’s deft 87th-minute finish finally beating Bernd Leno. For the young Dutchman a dream start after his £34m transfer from Bologna. For his compatriot Erik ten Hag, the contemplation of more unwanted forward line profligacy, summed up by a pithy post-match demand that his charges “kill in the box”, and the hope that at Brighton in Saturday’s 12.30pm kick-off the team will finally click and show they can be a formidable unit this campaign. The trip to the south coast is a test. Fabian Hürzeler’s men are coming off the 3-0 hammering of Everton at Goodison Park – the very best of beginnings for the Seagulls under a new manager who does not turn 32 until February. Ineos’s first summer market at United has yielded Zirkzee, two centre-backs in Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro plus a full-back in Noussair Mazraoui. Starting in the right-hand defensive berth on debut Mazraoui appeared accomplished, though he needs to eradicate the odd loose pass to the opposition that could be costly on other days. As an 81st-minute substitute against Fulham, De Ligt had constricted time to show anything revelatory about his worth so Saturday’s teams heet will be intriguing in regards to discovering if Ten Hag has found the 25-year-old a place in his starting XI, which would almost definitely mean dropping Harry Maguire, who after the win against Fulham insisted he feels fit. “Physically and mentally, I’m in a good place. I’m looking forward to a big season,” said the 31-year-old, who was an eye-catching package of aggression, leadership and decisive interventions on the opening night. The suspicion remains that Maguire will be the fall-guy for De Ligt, and if not at Brighton, then soon. But his value to Ten Hag has increased after Yoro was ruled out for three months. Maguire is one-paced and can be error-prone but his attitude is inarguable, as shown by his fight to again be a factor after his bombing out of the side by Ten Hag two seasons ago. https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/aug/23/erik-ten-hag-manchester-united-brighton-football-premier-league
  4. hile my brother-in-law Darragh took off for a honeymoon with his new wife Emilie, we joined my in-laws in taking the happy couple’s two-year-old daughter Lucy to Wexford. Lucy is delightful, and our own two-year-old adores her, in that way that toddlers adore and resent all their best friends with equal ferocity. They spent the first two days of our trip fighting over their favoured objects, laughing constantly as they ran between rooms, and generally cavorting like naughty spaniels. It was all quite idyllic, until I developed a severe lurgy on Day 3. I woke to find that my joints ached and my head pounded. My throat, now cracked and crispy, was soon issuing dignified groans to my wife, demanding Lemsip and ibuprofen, a diet on which I was to subsist, from bed, for the next 24 hours. I have just enough moral character to admit I am not a good patient. I regard being ill as nothing less than an offence against me personally. When other people get ill, they may well suffer worse symptoms or more debilitating conditions but, crucially, none of that is happening to me, reality’s true protagonist. When I am ill, by contrast, it’s very clear to me that the world must pause and reflect on how this has happened. How I, specifically, have been failed. Suffice it to say, being ill on holiday used to be the worst thing that could ever happen, either to me or those unfortunate enough to be within moaning distance. I have, however, slowly come to realise its benefits. Chief among these is that being ill does get you out of some of the childcare grind, especially if your in-laws are in tow. A lot of the mythical enjoyment of taking small children on holiday is, let’s face it, a swizz made up by photo-frame manufacturers. Almost all the everyday hurdles of childcare – sleeping, feeding, scheduling – are exacerbated by new locations where amenities are difficult to predict and routines are impossible to maintain. I have not yet lived through a full and busy day with a toddler that has ended with me saying, ‘This would have been easier if I’d done it, while sweating, in a place where I don’t know how to use the TV.’ Meanwhile, the benefits of holidays – relaxation, novel experiences, cultural enrichment – are all but prohibited by the above responsibilities, while also being lost on small children. It could be argued that 99% of holiday parenting, to paraphrase Hank Hill’s assessment of Christian Rock, doesn’t make parenting better, it just makes holidays worse. A whole day spent in bed, though, shaking from pain, was as close to an actual rest as I’ve had in over a year. While my unfeeling nurses took off for the beach and a cheery trip to a local famine ship, I rejoiced in the sick splendour of doing nothing at all. I rose the next day, refreshed and ebullient, ready for every remote control that flew my way. 5. At least 12 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a school housing displaced people in Gaza City, the Hamas-run Civil Defence authority says. A spokesman said rescuers were struggling to recover a number of missing people believed to be trapped under the rubble at Mustafa Hafez school in the western Rimal neighbourhood. The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas command and control centre inside the school, and that it had taken steps to mitigate risk of harming civilians. Earlier, it announced that troops had recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages being held in the Khan Younis area. The men were among the 251 people kidnapped by Hamas-led gunmen in the 7 October attacks on southern Israel last year, when about 1,200 people were also killed. 10. With the arrival of a brand new Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition update, AMD is bringing PC-to-PC streaming to AMD Link. That means you can loan your PC to a buddy, play local co-op games together, or even ask for help troubleshooting your PC (as if) through the power of the internet—if you a Radeon graphics card, of course, and so does your buddy. If you don't remember AMD Link, it's a streaming app baked into the Radeon Software and available with any AMD graphics card. It was first introduced back in 2018 as a way of wireless beaming your PC games over to your mobile device, and has since received a few quality of life improvements with subsequent AMD Adrenalin overhauls. With today's update, 21.4.1, the major news for PC gamers is the introduction of PC-to-PC streaming, which offers local or remote sharing of a desktop or game session between two Radeon PCs. https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-link-pc-app-screen-sharing/

  12. After defending bases and destroying heaps of enemies, it's time to turn toward other players and face off monkey to monkey (no pun intended). This time around, you will do it Yu-Gi-Oh! style, with a good ol' deck of cards and a bunch of spells that all go hand in hand. A perfect fit with the other games in the franchise In Bloons TD 6, you could defend your base against all sorts of unique Bloons that would swarm the sky - in Bloons Card Storm, the Bloons are still a thing, except now you can use them against other players. If there was ever an existing game that had all the elements to make it into a CCG, then Bloons had to be the one. With monkeys acting as the hero cards, each possessing unique abilities and attack patterns, various colours of Bloons being the primary attack weapon and unique "events" (if they could even be called that) acting as the spell cards, Bloons Card Storm has everything you might expect. A lot of strategy and planning In this game, a lot of strategising and planning will be involved. First, all the monkeys you know and love (like Quincy, Gwendolin, and Obyn Greenfoot) will act as the main hero of your deck. Based on their unique powers, you can form a deck, picking cards that have good synergy with each other and with the hero skills. You can then pick a few Bloons from a varied selection including the MOAB, Ceramic Bloon, BFB, Double Rainbow Bloon and even the ZOMG. There are a lot more, all costing different amounts of Gold, so preparing a balanced deck is the key to winning all the battles. But the Bloons are only the first line of defence - there is also an arsenal of monkeys tasked with destroying the enemy Bloons and keeping your hero alive, which also requires some planning. Each monkey card is more or less the equivalent of a tower from Bloons TD 6. You can deploy up to 5 monkey cards that can have various active skills. Some of them are simple farms meant to generate Gold, while others can summon Bloons or buff the team. https://www.pocketgamer.com/bloons-card-storm/preview/
  13. After nearly a year of waiting, the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 has a release date. It's not doing a surprise launch at Gamescom, as a recent Nvidia driver update led some to expect, but it is coming soon—on September 17—and a demo is available right now. The PC release of Final Fantasy 16 is available in two editions, the standard release and a "complete edition" that includes The Rising Tide and Echoes of the Fallen DLCs. As is often the case, pre-purchasing will also net you some extra stuff: The Cait Sith's Charm accessory, the Sixteen Bells Orchestrion Roll, and the Brave Blade weapon. The demo, which you can jump into right now, includes "the opening section" of Final Fantasy 16 as well as an "Eikonic Challenge" mode made specifically for the demo, designed to showcase the game's mechanics and combat through a dungeon quest and boss fight. Save data from the demo (minus the Eikonic Challenge, which is an entirely standalone thing) will carry over to the full game, so if you don't want to replay the demo area again when the full game comes out you won't have to. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/final-fantasy/final-fantasy-16-is-finally-coming-to-pc-in-september-and-a-demo-is-available-right-now/
  14. Kamala Harris has called for millions of new-build homes and first-time buyer help, tax breaks for families and a ban on grocery "price-gouging" in her first speech focused on economic policy. The Democratic presidential nominee's plans build on ideas from the Biden administration and aim at addressing voter concerns after a surge in prices since 2021. Many of the proposals would require action from Congress, where similar ideas have stalled in the past. Donald Trump said the vice-president had already had more than three years with the administration to deliver her promises, which his campaign called "dangerously liberal". "Where has she been and why hasn't she done it?" he asked. Ms Harris hit back in a speech on Friday in North Carolina, stating: "I think that if you want to know who someone cares about, look at who they fight for. "Donald Trump fights for billionaires and large corporations. I will fight to give money back to working and middle class Americans." The campaign's proposals include a "first-ever" tax credit for builders of homes sold to first-time buyers, as well as up to $25,000 in down-payment assistance for "eligible" first time buyers, a move that her campaign estimated could reach four million households over four years. She has also called for capping the monthly price of diabetes-drug insulin at $35 for everyone, finding ways to cancel medical debt, and giving families a $6,000 tax credit the year they have a new child. She is supporting a federal law banning firms from charging excessive prices on groceries and urged action on a bill in Congress that would bar property owners from using services that "coordinate" rents. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy8xqy0jv24o
  15. A total of 23 donkeys have had to be rehomed from a sanctuary in Leeds following its closure. The site in Eccup was one of four run by The Donkey Sanctuary charity across the country which have now closed their doors. The charity, based in Sidmouth, Devon, blamed rising costs for the closures, which it said had also meant the loss of 12 jobs at the Leeds site. A spokesperson for the charity said some of the affected donkeys were relocated to its Sidmouth HQ, while others had been moved to its farms for rescued donkeys. The Donkey Sanctuary charity was founded in Devon in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen to help abused or homeless animals. Since then, it has cared for about 20,000 donkeys and established farms and sanctuaries around England and Northern Ireland. 'Core mission' The charity first proposed the closure of its bases in Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Ivybridge in Devon in May. A spokesperson from the charity told the BBC: "We have now completed the consultation process in which we gave careful consideration to the changes proposed in May. "We can confirm that operational activities at the four centres, including Leeds, have ceased. “These changes have taken place in order to make best use of our donors’ money and focus on our core mission to improve the lives of donkeys here in the UK and around the world." The charity said that throughout the consultation process, "donkey welfare has been our utmost priority". "Donkeys from Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester have now moved to their new homes," the spokesperson said. "Some have relocated to our Sidmouth HQ, while others have gone to our farms in Devon and Derbyshire, and several have found homes through our guardian re-homing scheme.” Meanwhile, the charity said its base in Belfast would reopen soon as a "small sanctuary and rehoming centre". 16. Dodge is marking 20 years of Hemi-powered Durangos with a pair of special edition models including a Durango SRT Hellcat and Durango R/T 20th Anniversary edition. The Durango SRT Hellcat Silver Bullet, as the special edition is called, marks the last Hellcat standing and starts at a whopping $115,315. The Durango R/T 20th Anniversary edition is considerably cheaper, totaling $68,565 in the Plus trim. Both models can be ordered using Dodge's online tool. Back in 2020, Dodge launched the 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat with the insane supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 strapped under its hood. At the time, the monstrously powerful SUV was only scheduled for one year of production. Then, in 2022, the brand reversed course by announcing the 2023 Durango Hellcat. Now, Dodge is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first Hemi-powered Durango with a pair of special edition models: a Durango SRT Hellcat and a Durango R/T 20th Anniversary edition. Dodge is calling the Hellcat the Silver Bullet, and, you guessed it, it's finished in a shade of silver called Triple Nickel. There's a slew of other cosmetic upgrades as well, with the hood, the exhaust tips, and the rear logo finished in black. The special edition rides on a set of 20-inch wheels painted Lights Out or, in other words, dark gray. Six-piston Brembo brakes with red-painted calipers provide stopping power for the big SUV. The interior gets Ebony Red nappa leather seats embroidered with the Hellcat logo, suede for the headliner and steering wheel, and a heavy dose of forged carbon fiber. The rest of the interior matches the standard version. There's a 10.1-inch center touchscreen with access to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and heated/ventilated front seats. Nothing changes mechanically for the Silver Bullet, but that's not a bad thing. The famed 6.2-liter V-8 is supercharged and churns out an impressive 710 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2021 model Durango Hellcat Car and Driver tested launched to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and even managed 0.87 g of grip on our skidpad. While the Silver Bullet is certainly the main attraction, Dodge also announced a limited-run Durango R/T 20th Anniversary edition. Just like the Silver Bullet, the anniversary model gets a black hood and black badging. It's got 20-inch Brass Monkey wheels covering a set of six-piston Brembo brakes with black calipers. The special edition also adds the Tow N' Go package, which retunes the steering, adds adaptive dampers and an active exhaust, and ups towing capacity. As the sole remaining Hellcat, the Silver Bullet doesn't come cheap. The limited-edition Durango starts at $115,315, which is over $10,000 more than last year's starting price. The anniversary model is understandably cheaper, coming in at $68,565 in Plus trim and $72,065 in Premium trim. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a61926728/2025-dodge-durango-srt-hellcat-silver-bullet-pricing/
  17. “The first Premier League goal of the season came after 87 minutes,” tweets Daniel Hill. “What is the longest wait for the first goal from the start of a Premier League campaign?” The answer depends in part on whether you count minutes gone in the season or cumulative minutes played. Let us explain. Peter Beagrie scored the first goal of the 1993-94 season after 10 minutes of Everton’s game at Southampton. That was one of 10 3pm fixtures (standalone games at the start of the season weren’t a thing until 2003-04), so the first goal was scored 10 minutes after the season began, but also after 100 combined minutes of top-flight football up and down the country. Joshua Zirkzee’s winner for Manchester United comes in at 87 minutes either way, which puts it in third place on both tables. Second place belongs to 2007-08, when Michael Chopra scored a 93rd-minute winner for promoted Sunderland against Spurs in the opening game of the season. As nobody counts added time in answers like this, we’ll call it 90 minutes. The leader, both in consecutive and cumulative minutes, is 2010-11. That began with a Saturday lunchtime game between Spurs and Man City. It finished goalless, thanks mainly to a spectacular performance from a young Joe Hart, so the first goal of the season came during the 3pm games. It was scored in the 14th minute by Blackburn’s Nikola Kalinic; there were six games being played simultaneously, which means the goal came after 104 minutes of the season and 174 minutes of cumulative play. https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/aug/21/latest-opening-goal-premier-league-season-knowledge
  18. amela Muirhead had been looking forward to her first paddleboarding session, but the enjoyment lasted all of seven minutes. “Then, pure terror,” she says. She had won a competition for a free session at Maidens beach in Ayrshire, and set off cautiously while her two teenage children and the instructor watched from the shore. After about five minutes, she was attempting to stand up on the board. A few minutes later, “the weather changed very fast”, she says. “The wind really picked up – and the rain.” She found herself quickly drifting out to sea. Muirhead was swept three miles out, in winds that got up to about 46mph. She tried frantically to paddle back, but didn’t get anywhere. When she stopped, she could feel herself being blown away faster. “The waves were horrific,” she says. The board rocked violently, but she managed to stay seated. “I thought: ‘This is getting really bad.’ I just had to keep myself centred on the board and stay upright. It was my main focus and very draining.” She was terrified, but kept calm. “I think my prayers were answered and somebody was looking over me, because I was very lucky. I was like: ‘You’re not dying today. My kids need their mum.’ That kept me focused.” Also, she adds with a laugh, “I hadn’t seen the last Line of Duty and I really wanted to watch that, so in my head I was like: ‘You’re not going before that.’” The instructor had alerted the Coastguard; Muirhead heard a helicopter approach, then a lifeboat operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) appeared. She was freezing cold, exhausted and emotional at the sight of help after 40 minutes out at sea. “I didn’t realise they were voluntary. I’m for ever in their debt for saving my life and for ever grateful.” (Later, she raised more than £1,000 for the charity.) Safely back on land and unharmed except for blisters on her hands from paddling so hard, Muirhead felt “amazing”: “Just knowing that you’re alive and that was not my day to go.” https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/21/how-paddleboarding-conquered-britain-delights-dangers-nations-fastest-growing-sport
  19. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to an American "bridging proposal" for a ceasefire deal in Gaza. It is now up to Hamas to agree, Mr Blinken added. The pair met in Tel Aviv for talks that Mr Netanyahu has described as "positive", with his office adding that he had reiterated his commitment to an American proposal on the release of the hostages still held by Hamas, which took into account Israel’s security needs. Mr Blinken had earlier warned this was "maybe the last opportunity" to secure a ceasefire agreement, as the US hopes to push a deal over the finish line. The Americans hope that could happen perhaps as soon as this time next week, but that level of optimism is not shared by the Israeli leadership or Hamas. Each accuses the other of obstinate cynicism, and blocking a deal. Speaking in Tel Aviv after the talks, Mr Blinken described "the fierce urgency" of progressing towards a truce and hostage release deal. "We're never giving up", he added, saying more delays could mean more hostages could die and further obstacles could hamper any agreement. The US secretary of state will now travel on to Egypt and then Qatar, to try and drive forward progress on a deal. Mr Netanyahu reportedly told Mr Blinken that he planned to send a negotiating team to Cairo later this week for a new round of talks with Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators. Meanwhile, reports from Gaza speak of a worsening humanitarian situation amid continuing Israeli military activity. Israel said its aircraft and troops had killed “eliminated dozens of terrorists” over the past day and destroyed Hamas compounds and a tunnel network where rockets and missiles were found. Palestinian media reported that six people had been killed in an Israeli air strike near an internet access point near the southern city of Khan Younis on Monday, and that another four were killed in a strike on a car in Gaza City, in the north. The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. More than 40,130 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. A deal agreed in November saw Hamas release 105 of the hostages during a week-long ceasefire in return for some 240 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Israel says 111 hostages are still being held, 39 of whom are presumed dead. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y3xzex72no
