It's a longstanding mystery: how Mars lost the water that flowed across its surface billions of years ago. Scientists now think they have an answer: much of it became trapped in the planet's outer layer - its crust. The ancient water exists in the form of minerals contained within Martian rocks. The findings have been discussed at the 52nd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference and are published in Science journal. The study used measurements gathered from Mars-orbiting spacecraft, rovers and meteorites. Researchers then developed a computer simulation of how water was lost from the planet over time. More than four billion years ago, Mars was warmer and wetter - possibly with a thicker atmosphere. Water coursed through rivers, cutting channels in the rock, and pooled in impact craters. Nasa shows dramatic video of Mars rover's landing Key questions about Perseverance Mars rover Buried lakes of water discovered on Mars The Red Planet could have held enough water to cover its entire surface in a layer measuring between 100m and one kilometre deep. Around a billion years later, Mars had made the transition to the colder, desolate planet we recognise today. "We have known for a long time that Mars was much wetter in its early history. But, the exact fate of that water has been an ongoing problem," said planetary scientist Dr Peter Grindrod, who was not involved with the latest study. Dr Grindrod, from London's Natural History Museum, told BBC News: "We already know from studies of the atmosphere of Mars that some of that water was lost to space, and ice deposits on and just below the surface tell us that some water became frozen." Escape to space Earth has a magnetic shield, or magnetosphere, that helps prevent the atmosphere from escaping. But Mars' magnetic shield is weak and could have allowed elemental components of water to escape from the planet. But the rate at which hydrogen - one chemical constituent of water - escapes from that atmosphere today suggests this can't be the whole story. If it's assumed that the current loss rate for hydrogen was the same in the past, "it's a pretty small amount of water that you would have lost through this escape process", said co-author Eva Linghan Scheller, from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. In other words, most of the water must have gone elsewhere. The results of the team's computer modelling work show that between 30% and 99% of Mars' initial water was incorporated into minerals and buried in the planet's crust. Co-author Prof Bethany Ehlmann, also from from Caltech, explained that, "by studying data from Mars missions, It became clear that it was common - and not rare - to find evidence of water alteration". She continued: "When the crust becomes altered, it takes water - like liquid water - and sequesters it in a hydrated mineral that has water in its structure so that it is effectively trapped." The authors suggest that most of the water was lost between about 4.1 and 3.7 billion years ago - during a stretch of Martian history known as the Noachian Period. Martian climate change Dr Michael Meyer, lead scientist for Nasa's Mars exploration program, said: "The original overarching role of Mars exploration has been to follow the water, since it plays such a central role in the geology, climate and life of the planet. "This is a very important paper to understand how much water was on Mars, how it might have been lost and where it might be today." Dr Grindrod added: "What this new study tells us is that a lot of that water, possibly the majority, could have actually been locked into the rocks on Mars. This process of hydration is capable of storing large volumes of water, up to an amount equivalent to a global layer a kilometre deep." "Although most of the liquid water had probably disappeared after about one and a half billion years after Mars formed, we see evidence of hydrated minerals at the surface today, in areas like Jezero Crater, which is currently being explored by the Perseverance rover. "The early climate of Mars remains one of the most important topics in planetary science, and this study will help our understanding of the processes responsible for water loss."

How to clear RAM in a Windows computer When you run out of all the available RAM on your computer, you may notice that your device is struggling to perform tasks. If you find that your computer's applications crash most of the time and take longer to perform simple tasks, then you may be thinking about how to free up RAM on your computer. In this article we will talk about how to clear RAM in a Windows computer - a tutorial. Lets start! What is RAM? Your computer's random access memory (RAM) is actually stored on a memory chip, which is usually located on the motherboard. Here your computer stores short-term data. RAM is actually the center for storing all active and running programs, as well as processes. Your computer uses the information it has stored in RAM to perform tasks while receiving and performing other functions. When you use up all available RAM, your computer's performance may slow down because there is no storage space to perform its tasks. When you free up RAM space, it allows your computer to perform more tasks. Depending on your computer, there are several different ways you can free up RAM space. How to clear RAM in Windows PC Let's look at ways to reduce the amount of RAM you use. You don't have to do this most of the time, but they are useful when you notice a problem. Restart your computer This is advice that you are probably familiar with, but it is actually po[CENSORED]r for a reason. Restarting your computer will also completely clear the RAM and will also restart all running processes. While this obviously won't maximize available RAM, it will clear up processes that are running in the background and that may be consuming your memory. You should also restart your computer regularly so that it does not clutter up, especially if you use it constantly. Check the use of RAM with Windows tools You don't need to know what your RAM is actually using; Windows provides tools to show you. To start, open Task Manager by looking for it in the Start menu, or you can also use Ctrl + Shift + Esc for quick access. Tap More information to expand to the full program if you need it. Then on Processes, press the memory title to sort from the least to the least use of RAM. Keep in mind the applications you see here, as we will discuss more about them later. For more information you need to go to the performance section. In memory there you will see a diagram of RAM usage over time. Tap Open the resource monitor at the bottom and then you can get more details about the memory tab. The graph at the bottom will actually show you how much RAM you have for free. Sort by Fix (KB) in the list above to see which programs use most of your RAM. Uninstall or disable the software Now that you've seen which applications use the most RAM on your system, now consider whether or not you actually use them. An easy way to free up RAM is to prevent the use of programs that you never use anyway! Applications that you haven't opened in months are actually just wasting resources on your computer. So you have to remove them. Do this by navigating to Settings> Applications and tapping Uninstall in each application you want to delete. If you don't want to uninstall an application because you use it occasionally, you can instead prevent it from starting. Many applications are set to start automatically every time you log in, which is too much if you rarely use them. Use lighter applications and manage programs What if you really need to reduce RAM usage, but applications that embed RAM are needed for your workflow? You can also handle this in two ways. First, try to use lighter alternatives to applications when you can. If your computer is having trouble when you have Photoshop open, try using a smaller application like Paint.NET or GIMP for minor edits. Use Photoshop only when you are fully committed to the project. Second, pay more attention to the programs you open. Close any software that you do not actually work with. Check the open browser tabs that you want to read later, then close them to free RAM. Maintaining a tighter reason for the open will help free up RAM. Stop running background applications The next items that may take up RAM are your applications, which run automatically in the background. You may have used your computer for years before you noticed that some of these applications actually took up your RAM. This can quickly deplete memory, battery and data bandwidth. To stop background applications: Navigate to the computer settings. Touch the "Privacy" category. Then scroll down the panel on the left to Background Applications. Turn off all apps you don't use. Applications are set to run automatically in the background on your device. This allows them to display notifications and also update their software automatically. By turning this off on applications you don't use, you can save RAM. Scan for malware When you download any software programs or extensions to your computer, they may have a virus or malware attached. When you have malware on your computer, it can steal both your information and your RAM. It's worth checking for malware on your computer actually. Fraudulent resource theft software will definitely drain your available RAM. Adjusting the virtual memory If you see error messages that your system has low virtual memory, then you can also increase this and hope to maintain stable performance. If you want to do this, look for the Control Panel in the Start menu to open it. Switch the view category at the top right to Small Icons (if necessary), and then select System. On the left, tap Advanced System Settings, which will open a new window. Here, on the advanced, you need to tap the Settings button under Performance. Switch to advanced again and then click the change button in the virtual memory tab. You will now see the paging file size for your main device here. In most cases, you can exit Automatic Control and have Windows take care of it. However, if you run out of virtual memory, you may need to uncheck this and also set Initial Size and Maximum Size to higher values. Try ReadyBoost If your computer still has an older mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), you can try a lesser-known Windows feature called ReadyBoost to increase RAM. This allows you to plug in a flash drive or SD card, which Windows effectively treats as additional RAM. While it sounds great, this feature offers limited use today. If your computer has an SSD, ReadyBoost will do nothing. This is because an SSD is faster than a flash drive. Also, because computers have more RAM installed by default now, you won't see as much profit from ReadyBoost as in an anemic system many years ago. ReadyBoost's "pretending RAM" doesn't actually offer the same performance improvements as adding more RAM. Reduce visual effects As technology improves, there are many more options for your computer effects and visual effects. For example, you can turn off animations for applications and icons that use storage and for unnecessary effects. If you seem to have little memory for RAM, then there are some effects that you can release unless you free up more memory. To access the visual effects on your computer: First open File Explorer. Right-click "This Computer" in the left pane to select properties. Touch "Advanced System Settings" on the left. Select the "Advanced" tab. Then select settings in the "Performance" category. Now change to Adjustment for Best Performance. This setting will then disable all animated features on your computer. This will create more storage space, but will significantly limit the aesthetics of your computer. But you can also customize which visual effects your computer will perform according to your preferences and in the same section. Install more RAM If you always have a little RAM or want to run more programs at once. Then there's really no way around it: you need to add some more RAM to your machine. While not cheap, adding RAM will also give much improved performance if your computer hasn't had much before. If you are wondering how to get more RAM, know that it is possible to increase RAM just by adding physical sticks to your machine. Allegations of online "download more RAM" are jokes; it is impossible to add memory this way. On the desktop, increasing your RAM is a really simple upgrade. But due to the limited space of the laptop it can be difficult or even impossible on portable machines. You will also need to make sure that you purchase RAM that is compatible with your system.

When Dead Island 2 arrives on April 21, it will do so across most major platforms including current- and last-gen consoles (besides Switch) and PC. For some players, that means cross-play becomes a big question, as it may be the case that co-op buddies are spread across different platforms. Here's a full rundown of cross-play and co-op options in Dead Island 2. Does Dead Island 2 have cross-play? The answer to this burning question is short but not so sweet: Dead Island 2 does not have cross-play across console ecosystems, meaning those playing on PlayStation can't play with those on Xbox or PC, and vice versa. However, those playing on different generations of the same ecosystem can play together. PS4 and PS5 players can team up, as can Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players. In case you're wondering, it doesn't have cross-save either, so you'll want to stick to one platform while you slice your way through Los Angeles. Now Playing: Dead Island 2 Isn't What We Were Expecting... There is an additional wrinkle to this feature, however. Those playing on last-gen base-model platforms including PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox One S, cannot currently host co-op games, they can only join them. This is meant to be addressed in a future patch, and if it is, we'll update this article. In the meantime, your plans won't be interrupted so long as you have someone on PS5, PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox One X to play with. When does co-op unlock in Dead Island 2? Co-op becomes available in Dead Island 2 during the main story quest called "Call The Cavalry," which you'll reach after the first 20-60 minutes spent in-game, depending on your playstyle. In co-op, you can choose from one of three settings, or play in single-player which will allow you to pause the game. The co-op modes include: Public Invite Only Friends Only Dead Island 2 co-op explained Once you've decided on which platform you'll play Dead Island 2, you can do so with up to two other players for a team size of three people. There are six characters, or Slayers, to choose from, each with their own starting build and personality, so you can do well to maximize team strengths and cover up weaknesses by assembling the zombie-slaying avengers of your dreams. The game also stresses that the players far apart in the story can't always join each other. For example, if you are on the main story's third mission and your co-op partner is on the sixth mission, they can't host you, though you could host them. Basically, you aren't able to skip through parts of the story in order to play co-op. Progress carries over from co-op too, including inventory items, meaning the ideal scenario is to play with a tight-knit team of one or two others, and when you do separate into solo mode, try to maintain similar progress so you can rejoin whenever you'd like. There's a lot more to learn about Dead Island 2, and we've compiled it all in one place for you. Here's everything we know about Dead Island 2. For our own hands-on impressions of the game's first five-plus hours, check out our thoughts here.

People visit the front of the Supreme Court Building on April 19, 2023, in Washington, DC. People visit the front of the Supreme Court Building on April 19, 2023, in Washington, DC. Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images CNN — The future of a widely used medication to end pregnancies, the health care options of American women and even the viability of US regulatory approvals for routine drugs are all in question as the Supreme Court deliberates on a critical abortion case ahead of a deadline extended to Friday. Justice Samuel Alito gave the court more time Wednesday, extending a temporary hold on an order by a Texas judge, which would block approval of the mifepristone, and on a subsequent appeals court ruling, which would let the government’s approval of the drug stand but agreed access could be limited. It’s the most important abortion case since the high court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. The extension, until 11:59 p.m. ET Friday, means the drug remains available. But the possibility of health care chaos will not ease over the next 48 hours. The precarious two-day period is a study in microcosm of the deep uncertainty about the continued availability of abortion in some states nearly a year after the court’s conservative majority overturned the constitutional right to the procedure. It reflects the way that the post-Roe anti-abortion movement has escalated its effort to eradicate abortion rights everywhere. The current case also shows that President Joe Biden’s administration is ready to intervene aggressively in the courts to try to protect abortion rights. The fallout from the Texas ruling, which blocked Food and Drug Administration approval of the drug, is also thrusting abortion back into the Washington political storm in a way that has been a liability for the Republican Party with more moderate and swing voters – an ironic consequence of conservatives’ decadeslong campaign against Roe. There’s another irony to this all-consuming legal collision. Alito wrote in his majority opinion overturning Roe last summer that the 1973 decision was wrong because justices had usurped the Constitution and taken away from lawmakers the duty of deciding matters related to abortion rights. But the power play by the Trump-appointed Texas judge in this case, which swiftly rose to the high court, shows that Alito and his colleagues are going to be embroiled in deciding abortion law for years to come. As with most things about the Supreme Court, the reasoning behind Alito’s extension of the temporary hold was unclear to outsiders. He could simply have been providing his colleagues more time to consider an extraordinarily complex legal and clinical issue. Or it may be that there is no current majority on the bench for any course of action. The court is considering both the ruling by District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk to halt the approval of mifepristone and a 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals decision that allowed the FDA’s certification of the drug to stand but limited its use. The Supreme Court might uphold either ruling, reject them, cobble together a middle path or extend the stay on Kacsmaryk’s ruling pending litigation in what could be a fateful case. There is also an order contradictory to Kacsmaryk’s, from a judge in Washington state, requiring the FDA to keep mifepristone available in 18 liberal jurisdictions, which is further adding to the legal imbroglio. Former federal prosecutor Jennifer Rodgers said on “CNN News Central” on Wednesday that the fact that the court didn’t order a longer stay than the current two days could mean justices “are seriously thinking about affirming some of what the Fifth Circuit said.” “If they agree with the Fifth Circuit as to which parts of Judge Kacsmaryk’s (order) could survive or could be rejected, it would mean that women would have to go in person, multiple times, to their doctor and could only get mifepristone up to seven weeks (into a pregnancy),” Rodgers said. Why the current case is so important The decisions that the justices could make in the next few days will have wide-ranging implications beyond the simple question of if and when mifepristone can be used. — The Supreme Court could potentially deliver a ruling that would effectively allow a single judge – in this case, in a red corner of Texas – to influence the medical choices and restrict the freedoms of millions of American women, not just in states where abortion is banned but also in more liberal areas where it is legal. “This was an unelected judge making a decision – a federal decision basically on this,” GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina told CNN’s Manu Raju on Wednesday. This sweeping use of judicial power not only appears to offend the spirit of the Supreme Court ruling last year on allowing legislators to decide abortion rights. The ruling by Kacsmaryk, a long-time opponent of abortion rights, exemplifies the ambition of parts of the anti-abortion rights movement in the post-Roe era. But it could also open the way for liberal judges to use their power in the same way, and create a thicket of litigation that could also end up at the Supreme Court. The judiciary’s nominal reputation for restraint and staying out of partisan politics is already being threatened. — The Supreme Court’s eventual ruling could also have a sweeping impact on how mifepristone is prescribed – often as part of a two-drug regimen to end pregnancies and after miscarriages – and, in some cases, on the availability of abortion services to millions of women. As with the aftermath of the repeal of Roe v. Wade, the justices’ ruling here could mean that women’s rights and freedoms to make their own health care decisions could be more curtailed in some states than others. Katie Watson, an associate professor at Northwestern University, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Wednesday that even a partial loss of access could have grave consequences. “Approximately a half million women used this drug in recent years and they depend on it,” she said. — Critics argue that if Kacsmaryk’s ruling is upheld – along with the Fifth Circuit’s limitations on the use of mifepristone – it would validate a decision of a single judge or panel with no medical expertise over standards of science and clinical analysis. Mifepristone has been safely prescribed since the FDA approved it two decades ago. But anti-abortion doctors and medical associations argued in the case that the agency violated the law in how it approved the drug for abortions in 2000. By filing their suit in Amarillo, Texas, they guaranteed that Kacsmaryk would hear the case. “They basically have said, these two judges, hey we know better than the FDA,” Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar told Tapper. Such a precedent could create chaos in the pharmaceutical industry and in medicine and threaten the regulatory system for clearing new treatments. It might also prompt other judges to take aim at approved drugs – for instance, birth control pills or even treatments for common ailments and pain killers. Such a scenario would directly undermine the entire premise of federal government. “The impact, even if they say the Washington order can stand and the Texas order can stand, is that the FDA cannot regulate federally. … The impact is enormous,” Watson said. — The justices’ deliberations may also have a profound effect on the reputation of the court. Many moderate Americans increasingly see the conservative majority as a group of unelected right-wingers flouting public opinion on issues like abortion, which majorities do not want to be banned outright, according to many polls. While the conservative justices insist that they are simply interpreting the Constitution as written and returning issues to the states, a decision that causes massive upheaval could harm the court’s image at a time when it is also reeling from ethics questions surrounding conservative Justice Clarence Thomas. — A decision to ban mifepristone could cause shockwaves like those set off by the overturning of Roe, which hurt Republicans in last year’s midterm elections and most recently galvanized voters in support of a liberal candidate in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race earlier this month. Advocates who believe abortion is immoral may not care about partisan implications. The repeal of a constitutional right to an abortion validated a half-century-long campaign by the anti-abortion movement in one of the most significant political victories in modern American history. But the Republican Party risks paying a price in next year’s presidential and congressional elections. Liberals might have been complacent in a belief that Roe would never be overturned, but they have effectively leveraged the issue ever since. “Our Republican colleagues, for the most part, have been silent on this,” said Klobuchar, referring to the cases currently being considered by the Supreme Court. “We are standing up, the Democratic Party, President Biden, for women’s rights, to say women have a right to make their own health care decisions.” Mace, the South Carolina Republican from a competitive district, delivered a warning on Wednesday that the GOP’s position could cost it the House majority in 2024. “It’s a purple district, and as a bellwether for the rest of the country, it’s one of the reasons why we will not win the po[CENSORED]r vote in ’24 if we continue down this path of extremism,” Mace said of her Charleston-area seat. “That is not where the American people are, and we need to have a conversation, where are we and where is the middle ground?” How the abortion debate is changing America The Supreme Court’s deliberations come as abortion is already at the center of federal, local and state government policy debates and is stretching the court system with dueling rulings that are further politicizing the legal system. In the six months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe, there were about 32,000 fewer abortions than expected in the US, according to a new study by the Society of Family Planning. And CNN reported Wednesday that fewer medical students are applying to ob/gyn residency programs, with the decline most marked in states with the strongest restrictions. And a patchwork of laws related to abortion, and its restricted access, is emerging across the country. On Wednesday, for instance, Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves signed new bills that he said will enshrine a “culture of life” by widening a safety net for foster children and expanding adoptions and resources for women who discover they are pregnant. Last week, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill outlawing most abortions in the state after six weeks – a point by which many women do not know they are pregnant. The potential presidential candidate’s reluctance to publicize his move, which was announced late at night, reflected the tug of war in the GOP between the desire to go all in on banning abortion and a recognition that doing so could alienate more moderate voters in a national election.

Dolphin Dolphin, dolphin, dolphin, or dolphin are aquatic mammals. Dolphins are closely related to whales and porpoises. There are approximately forty species of dolphins, which are divided into 17 genera. Their sizes range from 1.2 meters and forty kilograms - like a Maui dolphin - to 9.5 meters and ten tons - like an orca. It lives in all seas of the world, especially in the shallower seas on the continental shelves. It is a carnivore that feeds on fish and squid. Dolphins also have openings at the top of their heads that allow them to breathe outside the sea and water, and they are found in all kinds Etymology In the old Arabic dictionaries (Qamos al-Muheet and Lisan al-Arab) the dolphin was defined as: an animal in the sea that rescues a drowning person, enabling him to get on its back, so that he can swim. The word “dolphin” comes from the Greek word δελφίς (delphis), associated with the word δελφύς (delphos), meaning womb. Therefore, the meaning of the literal translation of the Greek word dolphin is: “a fish with a womb.” It was borrowed from Latin and became the dolphin in Latin delphinus (Romanization of δελφῖνος (delphinus) in Late Greek), which changed to dolfinus in Middle Latin and daulphin in Old French, where it replaced the f with ph. historically I used mereswine, which means porpoise. Any species of oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae). Any species of river dolphin family (Platanistoidea). What kind of class of toothed whales (Odontoceti) It is often synonymous with the common bottlenose dolphin. installation The dolphin and the human Dolphin meat is consumed as human food in some parts of the world, such as Japan and Peru (where it is called chancho marino, i.e. porpoise)

There are many rumors that during 2022 have claimed a possible arrival of the Fiat Topolino . In fact, according to some rumors, it could take the guise of the Citroen Ami . During 2022 , the small electric French has been very successful in terms of sales and according to the latest rumors it seems that Stellantis wants to increase sales of the electric quadricycle that can be driven by 14 years and older. To date, the Citroen Ami is produced in the Kenitra plant in Morocco , where the new Fiat Topolino could also be produced. As for the debut date , many think that the arrival could be 2023 given that the CEO of Stellantis Carlos Tavares himself had hypothesized the arrival of two novelties next year. Furthermore, among the novelties, some rumors state that there should also be the new Fiat 600 . However, at the same time, someone else claims that the Mickey Mouse could only arrive in the course of 2024 . Finally, the future Topolino in shape will probably be very similar to the Citroen Ami from which it will differ in logos, colors, some interior customization and the price (perhaps higher than the Ami).

While scrolling social media recently, a post claiming that warm water is effective against any skin issue, and also makes it glow, caught our attention. An Instagram page Indian_Veg_Diet noted, “Medical experts say that warm water is most beneficial if there is a skin problem or to bring a natural glow to the face. In fact, in a few days, your skin will start glowing and become pimple-free too.” But, does it actually help? Dr Jaishree Sharad, a cosmetic dermatologist, told this portal that drinking warm water leads to sweating, which is a natural mechanism of releasing toxins from the body. “Warm water also improves sinus congestion thereby reducing puffiness or swelling around the eyes. Lukewarm water also speeds up digestion by helping better absorption of nutrients. And if the gut is clean, the skin remains clean too,” Dr Sharad said. However, the expert added that there is very little scientific evidence of any direct benefit of drinking warm water to the skin except that it releases nasal congestion and causes “a little extra sweating which can also be obtained by other methods such as taking steam or exercising respectively”. But there is no denying the fact that warm water helps detoxify the body naturally. “Warm water hydrates the skin, avoids dryness and flakiness, and naturally moisturises the skin, which aids the skin to glow naturally,” Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics told indianexpress.com. Dr Kapoor added that drinking warm water enhances blood circulation in the body. “Proper blood flow will make sure that adequate nutrients are delivered to the skin cells, and that is how you will get healthy skin too,” she mentioned. Dr Sharad went on to state that “if the gut is clean, the skin remains clean”. “When your body is dehydrated, the skin gets dehydrated and loses its turgor. So, it is important to drink about two and a half to three litres of water per day, unless you have certain kidney or heart conditions where you are not supposed to drink too much water. The upper layers of the skin do not get their water from the deeper skin cells. Instead, they draw their water from the environment. Hence it is also important to moisturise the skin along with drinking water,” said Dr Sharad

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced Thursday that the Shawwal moon could not be sighted in Pakistan, and as a result, the nation will mark the event on Saturday (April 22). “We have not received any testimony of the sighting of the Shawwal moon across the country," Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad said in a press conference in Islamabad. "Eid ul Fitr will be held across the country on Saturday, April 22. The sky was clear in most parts of the country, while it was cloudy in some places," he added. The presser came after the committee's meeting — held at the religious affairs ministry with Maulana Khabir in the chair — ended. Members of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, representatives of the Department of Meteorology, Suparco, and other relevant organisations were present at the meeting. The committee made the decision after receiving input regarding the sighting of the moon from all over the country. Earlier, zonal committees from Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Sukkur, and Quetta confirmed that they had received no testimonies of the moon sighting. In Karachi, Hafiz Mohammad Salafi — who headed the meeting in the metropolis — said the moon could not be sighted in the city as the zonal committee did not receive testimonies. He said that the moon could have been sighted by 7:17pm. Similarly, in Lahore, the moon could have been sighted by 7:10pm. However, dark clouds and strong winds precluded the possibility of moonsighting. Zonal committees in Peshawar, Quetta and Sukkur all confirmed that the moon had not been sighted and no testimonies had been received from anyone. The Meteorological Department and astronomers had previously said that there was little possibility of moonsighting today and Eid ul Fitr would take place on Saturday. The federal government has announced that the Eid ul Fitr holidays will commence tomorrow (Friday) and will go on till Tuesday (April 25). Global The moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and as a result, the Gulf states will celebrate the religious event on Friday. Australian Muslim Council, in a statement, announced that since the Eid moon could not be sighted today, the country would observe the religious festival on April 22 (Saturday). According to international media, Brunei, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand will celebrate Eid ul Fitr on April 22. Eid will also be observed in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore on Saturday as the crescent could not be sighted. In Bangladesh, the meeting to sight the moon will be convened tomorrow (Friday).

The US space agency's Perseverance rover is now just three weeks from arriving at Mars. The robot and the Red Planet are still separated by some 4.5 million km (3 million miles), but this gap is closing at a rapid rate. The biggest, most sophisticated vehicle ever sent to land on another planet, the Nasa robot is being targeted at a near-equatorial crater called Jezero. Touchdown is expected shortly before 2100 GMT on Thursday 18 February. To get down, the Nasa rover will have to survive what engineers call the "seven minutes of terror" - the time it takes to get from the top of the atmosphere to the surface. The "terror" is a reference to the daunting challenge that is inherent in trying to reduce an entry speed of 20,000km/h to something like walking pace at the moment of "wheels down"."When the scientists look at our landing site, Jezero Crater, they see the scientific promise of everything: the remains of an ancient river flowing in and flowing out of this crater and think that's the place to go to look for signs of past life. But when I look at Jezero, I see danger," says Allen Chen, the engineer who leads the Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) effort for Perseverance. "There's danger everywhere. There's this 60-80m-tall cliff that cuts right through the middle of our landing site. If you look to the west, there are craters that the rover can't get out of even if we were to land successfully in one of them. And if you look to the east, there are large rocks that our rover would be very unhappy about if we put down on them," he told BBC News.Fortunately, Perseverance has some tried and tested technologies that should ensure it reaches a safe point on the surface. Among them is the famous "Skycrane" jet pack that successfully landed Nasa's previous rover, Curiosity, eight years ago. There are even some additions designed to improve reliability. The parachute system that slows the atmospheric descent from super- to sub-sonic speeds now has something called "range trigger". This more precisely times the opening of the parachute to bring the rover closer to its notional bulls-eye. Unlike Curiosity which just opened the chute when it reached a pre-determined velocity, Perseverance will check its surroundings first before issuing the command. Allied to this is Terrain Relative Navigation. Perseverance will be examining the ground below and checking it against satellite imagery of the crater to better gauge its position. It's like you or I looking out the window of our car and then looking back at a map to see where we are, says Chen. "That's what we're asking Perseverance to do on her own, to figure out where she is, and then fly to known safe spots that are nearby."
