While there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach when it comes to studying effectively, there are methods you can use to improve your recall and long-term memory. Remember: everyone has different learning techniques. What works for other students may not work for you. Just keep trying until you discover the best way to study. If you are a VU student, we will help you achieve your full potential by developing your confidence, academic ability, and study skills. With our support, you will gain essential skills for university. Here are our top tips to help you study effectively. [1] Taking the time to get organised will set you up well and help you achieve your learning goals. Top study tips: Invest in a diary, and use it to keep track of current assignment deadlines. Bring all the material and devices you need to class, so you can participate. You may find it helpful to pack your bag the night before, so you’re ready to go first thing in the morning. [2]. DON’T SKIP CLASS!--Skipping class can be detrimental to your learning and achieving your study goals. It leaves gaping holes in your notes – and in your subject knowledge. VU’s Block Model® is designed to give you more time to devote to work, your social life and other commitments. Rather than juggling four subjects at once, you’ll concentrate on one unit (subject) over a four-week ‘block’ period. You’ll attend three-hour workshop-style classes, three times a week. The rest of your time can be used to study, work, see friends – whatever is most important to you. Remember to practise active listening by focusing on what your teachers are saying in class and taking notes as needed. [3]TAKE NOTES To keep your brain engaged during class, take notes, which you can refer to later, as you refine your study techniques. Notes can help store information in your long-term memory, right there in class. These notes will be important for reviewing when you’re completing assessments and assignments. You might find it handy to condense your notes after class, so they’re clear and easy to read. Underline or highlight key points. If anything doesn’t make sense, you can seek clarification from your teacher. You can also create visual aids like flow charts and mind maps to help simplify information. For some students, these visual aids help them remember complex information and study more effectively. If you do miss a class, ask a study buddy or classmate if you can refer to their notes. This will ensure there are no holes in your own notetaking [4] TALK TO YOUR TEACHER & ASK QUESTIONS Your teacher is, in a way, a resource who is there to be used! The VU Block Model allows you to focus on one subject at a time. Learning in a work-shop style class, you get the opportunity to know your teacher. You can take advantage of this interactive learning environment by asking questions during or after class, where you can get fast feedback. Teachers can further clarify any topics you find confusing. You may even be able to get a little direction on assignments before submitting. Your teacher will no doubt be impressed with your initiative and happy to help. The latest news of russia and ukrania war Pro-Ukrainian groups of Russian fighters claimed to have launched cross-border attacks in two regions of Russia on Tuesday, hours after Kyiv fired a wave of drones at targets across the country. The Freedom for Russia Legion – a group of Russian dissidents fighting for Ukraine which has previously claimed responsibility for incursions into Russia – said it had gained full control of the village of Tyotkino in Russia’s Kursk region. CNN cannot independently verify the claims. The group, comprising a few hundred battle-hardened, anti-Kremlin Russian volunteers fighting as part of Ukraine’s armed forces, also said it had destroyed an armored personnel carrier inside Russia. A separate pro-Ukrainian group of Russian fighters, the Siberian Battalion, wrote Tuesday on Telegram: “Well, we’re home at last. As promised, we are bringing freedom and justice to our Russian land.” A third group, the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), also claimed to be involved in the fight. The Russian defense ministry said “Ukrainian terrorist formations” with tanks and armored vehicles tried to cross the border from three directions early Tuesday, but claimed the attacks had been “thwarted.” The ministry said the attacks were launched in the village of Odnorobovka in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, and in the nearby Russian villages of Nekhoteevka and Spodariushino in Belgorod. “The enemy was struck by aviation, missile forces and artillery,” the ministry said. It claimed to have “eliminated” five tanks an armored personnel carrier in Nekhoteevka and Spodariushino. The ministry also said its forces had killed 60 Ukrainian soldiers near Odnorobovka as they attempted to cross into Russia. It said four additional attacks had been launched near the border territory of Russia’s Kursk region, north of Belgorod, but that Ukraine had “suffered significant losses” and was driven back. The ministry did not outline the number of casualties in Kursk and CNN cannot independently verify the claims. Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from vespoid wasp ancestors in the Cretaceous period. More than 13,800 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified. They are easily identified by their geniculate (elbowed) antennae and the distinctive node-like structure that forms their slender waists. Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies that may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals. Larger colonies consist of various castes of sterile, wingless females, most of which are workers (ergates), as well as soldiers (dinergates) and other specialised groups. Nearly all ant colonies also have some fertile males called "drones" and one or more fertile females called "queens" (gynes). The colonies are described as superorganisms because the ants appear to operate as a unified entity, collectively working together to support the colony. Ants gathering food (video) Ants have colonised almost every landmass on Earth. The only places lacking indigenous ants are Antarctica and a few remote or inhospitable islands. Ants thrive in moist tropical ecosystems and may exceed the combined biomass of wild birds and mammals. Their success in so many environments has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats, tap resources, and defend themselves. Their long co-evolution with other species has led to mimetic, commensal, parasitic, and mutualistic relationships. Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have long been an inspiration and subject of study. Many human cultures make use of ants in cuisine, medication, and rites. Some species are valued in their role as biological pest control agents. Their ability to exploit resources may bring ants into conflict with humans, however, as they can damage crops and invade buildings. Some species, such as the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) of South America, are regarded as invasive species in other parts of the world, establishing themselves in areas where they have been introduced accidentally. While most undergraduates tend to spend their time nursing hangovers and mulling over empty pockets, some do know how to use their time productively. Especially those with ambitions of entering the motorsport sector through the ‘Formula Student’ program - a worldwide time attack competition consisting of over 650 teams. Sébastien Cavedon from the Bern University of Applied Science’s racing team is just one of many emerging student engineers hoping to be talent-spotted. He sat down for a chat with TopGear.com during the 2024 Geneva Motor Show to discuss his team’s competitor for last season, ‘Nebula’, and just how much work goes into grafting their trade. “Nebula was built in nine months and took around 20,000 hours to complete between 55 of us. Everything you see is engineered and assembled in our free time.” For some perspective, this averages out at over 15 continuous work days per team member. Impressive, considering they also need to find time for the twice-a-week booze fests and, well, studies. But the result of the efforts that the Bern Racing Team (BRT) has put into Nebula is telling. There are five teams from Switzerland at present, and last year we finished second. We’re very proud of what we achieved, considering we had to learn how to control and channel aerodynamics ourselves, and how to sculpt the body to be as efficient as it can be under the financial constraints that we have.” It’s also worth noting that while some teams can spend millions developing their cars, BRT has so far accumulated just £256,000 worth of sponsorship funding. So, how have they made Nebula punch above its weight? “The most important thing for us is the mechanical grip since we rarely exceed 60mph during events. We produce around 100kg of downforce at 50mph, which remains our strongest asset alongside acceleration.” For some perspective, Nebula can get from 0-60mph a hair’s breadth quicker than a Porsche Carrera GT. So the powertrain must be pretty potent, right? “We have a planetary gearbox and a wheel hub solution with a motor at each wheel, so it’s four-wheel drive. The blue and grey metal part you see is the gearbox, and the 140kW motor is directly inside it. It’s a very compact solution, and that means quick steering and better dynamics all around.” And lastly, how will BRT improve Nebula’s successor for next season? source : https://www.topgear.com/car-news

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are going neck-and-neck as the race for the EPL title glory intensifies. Just the last 10 Matchdays of the 2023-24 Premier League season are left, and by the look of it, it is a three-horse race right to the end. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City… it could be any one of them lifting the trophy this season. Arsenal had gone top with their 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday. Both City and Liverpool had a chance to take the top spot with a win on Sunday when they met each other at Anfield but the match ended in a 1-1 draw which meant Liverpool remained second on goal difference on 64 points, one point ahead of third-placed City. Hindustan Times - your fastest source for breaking news! Read now. More often than not, it’s a two-horse race at this stage of the season. In recent seasons, Manchester City twice won the league by the narrowest of margins, i.e. by one point, first in 2018-19 and then in 2021-22. On both occasions, it was Liverpool who had to content themselves with a second-place finish. But three teams in the fray for the title at this stage doesn’t happen every other year. The last time a three-horse race came to pass was in the 2013-14 season when City eventually edged Liverpool and Chelsea by two and four points, respectively. Chelsea, who were leading after 28 games, bungled their opportunities and City pounced on theirs in the remainder of the season. source : https://www.hindustantimes.com/sports/football

Palestinian medical staff in Gaza have told the BBC they were blindfolded, detained, forced to strip and repeatedly beaten by Israeli troops after a raid at their hospital last month. Ahmed Abu Sabha, a doctor at Nasser hospital, described being held for a week in detention, where, he said, muzzled dogs were set upon him and his hand was broken by an Israeli soldier. His account closely matches those of two other medics who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. They told the BBC they were humiliated, beaten, doused with cold water, and forced to kneel in uncomfortable positions for hours. They said they were detained for days before being released. The BBC supplied details of their allegations to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). They did not respond directly to questions about these accounts, or deny specific claims of mistreatment. But they denied that medical staff were harmed during their operation. They said that "any abuse of detainees is contrary to IDF orders and is therefore strictly prohibited". WARNING: Some readers may find details in this article distressing. The IDF raided the hospital in the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis - which was one of the few in the Strip still functioning - on 15 February, saying intelligence indicated that the hospital housed Hamas operatives. They also said Israeli hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October had been held there - and some of the hostages themselves have publicly said they were kept at Nasser. Hamas has denied that its fighters operate inside medical facilities. Footage secretly filmed in the hospital on 16 February, the day the medics were detained, was shared with the BBC. It shows a row of men stripped to their underwear in front of the hospital's emergency building, kneeling with their hands behind their heads. Medical robes are lying in front of some of them. WHAT IS CAT TRAINING? Basic cat training can help you teach your cat to come to you when called, get them in to a cat carrier as well as feel more comfortable being in one, accept being handled for basic health checks, or to have their claws clipped. If possible, it's best to start cat training from a young age. When most people think about training animals, they think about teaching them specific things such as performing a ‘stay’, ‘roll over’ or giving a paw. However, any time your cat learns to do more or less of something based on your behaviour, you are in effect training or teaching them. Cat training will also have the added bonus of giving you the opportunity to interact with your cat in a positive, productive way that will stimulate your cat and strengthen your bond. HOW DO I TRAIN MY CAT? means rewarding your cat for performing a desired behaviour. You want your cat to be motivated to learn and feel happy and comfortable doing so. The more the cat feels good about doing something we want them to do, the more likely they are to do it. When you are training your cat, you will most often be ‘shaping’ their behaviour by rewarding actions that get closer and closer to the end behaviour you want them to perform. The key to effective cat training is to build up gradually. Identify what you would like them to do, then break this down into small steps, and work through these individually at your cat’s pace. For example, if you are teaching your cat to go into the cat carrier of their own accord, you might first simply give the cat a treat for looking in the direction of the carrier. Next you might reward the cat for walking towards the carrier, then for sniffing it, and so on, until the cat reaches the stage where they enter the carrier voluntarily. You can also lure the cat towards the carrier using treats, and place some inside the carrier to encourage your cat to enter. It is important not to overwhelm them or expect too much too soon. When cat training, it’s very important that you reward your cat as soon as possible after they perform the behaviour you want from them. If you leave the gap too long, then the cat is unlikely to associate the reward (the treat) with the behaviour you want. You might find it useful to initially create a positive association with a specific word or sound. You can do this by saying something like ‘good’ for example, in an upbeat but calm way, and then immediately giving the cat a treat. The more you do this, the more the cat will associate the word ‘good’ with something nice arriving and give you a few more seconds to get the treat ready to give them.
