  3. WASHINGTON — A lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump against 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was tossed out Thursday by a federal judge in Florida who dismissed the former president's legal complaint as a "200-page political manifesto." In a scathing rebuke of Trump's claims, U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks wrote that the lawsuit contained “glaring structural deficiencies” and that many of the “characterizations of events are implausible.” Middlebrooks also suggested that the lawsuit served as an outlet for Trump to air grievances with his opponents, not a legitimate legal effort. "This Court is not the appropriate forum," the federal judge wrote. Trump v. Clinton:Donald Trump sues Hillary Clinton and the DNC over Russian interference allegations The 108-page lawsuit, filed in March, claimed that Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey and other top Clinton and FBI officials schemed together to accuse Trump of colluding with Russia to win the 2016 election. It alleged that Clinton and the DNC "worked together with a single self-serving purpose: to vilify Donald J. Trump." Special counsel Robert Mueller did not find evidence that Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the election, but he noted in his report that the campaign was an eager beneficiary of Russia's interference. The special counsel did not reach a conclusion on whether Trump had obstructed the investigation, but prosecutors found "multiple acts by the President that were capable of exerting undue influence over law enforcement investigations." Efforts to obstruct the inquiry, Mueller said, "were mostly unsuccessful...largely because the persons who surrounded the president declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests." Trump lawyer Alina Habba said in a statement that the former president’s legal team “vehemently disagrees” with the Court’s opinion, claiming it’s “rife with erroneous applications of the law.” “We will immediately move to appeal this decision,” Habba said. 4. Wrinkly 'sac' with no anus probably isn't humans' earliest ancestor. (Thank goodness!) An ancient creature that looks like an "angry Minion" with no anus is more closely related to penis worms and mud dragons than to humans, a new study suggests. The 500 million-year-old Saccorhytus coronarius was previously tied to a group of animals called deuterostomes that produced vertebrates and humans, suggesting it was our earliest known ancestor. But a new research team has decided it's an ecdysozoan, a group that includes insects and marine invertebrates such as penis worms (priapulids) and mud dragons (Kinorhyncha), and which diverged from a common ancestor to humans much further back in evolutionary history. The latest findings make an important amendment to the evolutionary tree and our understanding of how life developed, the researchers said Study co-author Philip Donoghue, a professor of paleobiology at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, told Live Science that the team was always confident that S. coronarius needed reclassification, but joked at the idea it was a relief for some of his colleagues. "I'm sure some people were relieved that we're not descended from wrinkly ball sacs," he said. The early Cambrian species is only about 0.02 inches (0.5 millimeters) long and found in microfossils in the Shaanxi Province of Northwest China. The team used a type of particle accelerator called a synchrotron to produce detailed X-ray images of the fossil that revealed microscopic details about its body plan. The original interpretation of S. coronarius, first published in 2017, concluded that the holes around its mouth were pores and potentially a precursor for gills, Live Science previously reported. The new research concluded that S. coronarius actually had spines that came through these holes, which broke off during fossilization. The team constructed a digital 3D model of S. coronarius and compared it with different animal groups, before placing it among early ecdysozoans. It's a big move for the little creature and may lead to some scientific debate. Karma Nanglu, a paleobiologist at Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology, who was not involved in the new or the 2017 studies, told Live Science that there's still room for interpretation with S. coronarius. "I don't know if I'd go as far to say that this is a full-on correction [of the 2017 research]," he said. "It's an alternative interpretation and I think both of them are interesting and worthy of debate." Nanglu described Saccorhytus as having the trifecta of components that make it very hard to interpret. "It's old, it's weird and it's small," he said. Because of these factors, major understanding can shift with the smallest of details. "We're dealing with a time period where most major animal groups make their first appearance in the fossil record, either around that time or shortly after," Nanglu said. "And so even small interpretations of 'is this a spine that's been broken off or is this a true bonafide actual opening into the animal' carry huge ramifications for how we interpret the origins of these major groups." The lack of anus is an important feature no matter what group Saccorhytus is in, as it contributes to the understanding of how body plans evolved. The new research suggests that early ecdysozoans had a greater range of body plan designs than previously thought and there may be more body plans waiting to be discovered. S. coronarius could have spent its days catching prey in sediment on the sea floor, but Donoghue noted that scientists still have much more to learn about these ancient creatures. "All we really know is that they're tiny, they have a mouth and no anus," Donoghue said. "Whatever went in their mouth had to come out of their mouth after they finished processing it. It's a strange way to live, but it worked for them I guess." The study was published online Wednesday (Aug. 17) in the journal Nature(opens in new tab). https://www.livescience.com/saccorhytus-angry-minion-not-human-ancestor

  6. Six minutes 52.1 seconds. Those numbers are the reason why the Lamborghini Huracán Performante is here awaiting our thorough examination. We want to understand how this naturally aspirated, conventional supercar can apparently lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife – the home of one of the industry’s preferred performance benchmarks – faster than the recent crop of hypercars. It has done so without a horsepower figure beginning with a nine. It has done so without electrical assistance, which would fill any torque gap left by an astonishingly highly tuned or turbocharged engine. It just has less weight, a bit more power, a bit more aero and apparently a lot more chassis deftness than the usual Huracán. This wasn’t meant to happen. There are other cars in the Volkswagen Group that are designed specifically to be harder, faster, more powerful, massively more expensive and far more technologically advanced than any Lamborghini. And yet, during October last year, Lamborghini test driver Marco Mapelli – clearly quite a handy driver because he also recorded a sub-seven-minute lap in a Lamborghini Aventador SV – manhandled the Huracán around. It isn’t easy to find an opportunity to set a Nürburgring lap time because the place is so busy. Mapelli took one of the 15-minute slots set aside for very fast laps at the end of an ‘industry pool’ test day and did one warm-up lap followed by a fast lap to record a time so quick that some people disbelieved it. We can do rather better than that here. We had use of our test track for two hours straight. We also have independent test times set by the chief alternatives – McLaren’s P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder. So let’s see if the Huracán is the fastest-lapping production car of the moment – and, because or despite of that, how good it remains as a road-going supercar. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/lamborghini/huracán-performante-2017-2019

  8. NASA's rover Perseverance is investigating signs of ancient life on Mars, and it has now collected some of the most promising samples from the Red Planet yet. According to NASA, several rock samples containing organic matter were found in Jezero Crater, a 28-mile wide crater home to what scientists believe was once a river delta that formed about 3.5 billion years ago. "Jezero was selected for this mission because ... it allows us to explore an ancient habitable environment, (and) it allows us to seek evidence of possible Martian life in rocks deposited at that time, about 3½ billion years ago," Perseverance project scientist Ken Farley said in a recorded panel briefing about the rover's findings. "I want to emphasize: This mission is not looking for extant life, things that are alive today. Instead, we are looking into the very distant past, when Mars' climate was very different than it is today," Farley said. Want to hear what it sounds like on Mars? NASA's Perseverance rover gives you the chance. Martian water:Orbiter discovers 'significant amounts of water' in Grand Canyon-like area of Mars Perseverance launched in July 2020 and landed in Jezero Crater in February 2021. Since July 7, NASA says, the rover has collected four samples from the delta, bringing the total number of collected, "scientifically compelling rock samples" to 12. Martian rocks with organic matter Perseverance is studying the delta's sedimentary rocks. The rover already has explored Jezero Crater's floor, finding igneous rocks. The contrast of the two "provides us with a rich understanding of the geologic history after the crater formed and a diverse sample suite," Farley said in a news release. The project scientist pointed to one collected mudstone that contains "intriguing organic compounds." With the help of an instrument called Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals, or SHERLOC, organic molecules were found in "Wildcat Ridge," a 3 foot-wide rock believed to have been formed by mud and fine sand in an evaporating saltwater lake billions of years ago. "It's clear that we're uncovering a bigger story than what's happening in Jezero Crater. We found signals that we think are possibly from organic matter on every target that we've observed with SHERLOC to date," SHERLOC scientist Sunanda Sharma said in the panel briefing. Sharma added that the finding wasn't "unexpected," because it aligns with previous research. "However, it does say that organics seem to persist in the very harsh Martian surface environment, which is very exciting for us." Sign up for our trending newsletter to get the latest news of the day According to NASA, Curiosity Mars rover found evidence of organic matter in rock-powder samples back in 2013. Perseverance has detected organics in Jezero Crater before, but the latest finding was in an area with conditions that would have allowed life to exist in the distant past, scientists say. “The fact the organic matter was found in such a sedimentary rock – known for preserving fossils of ancient life here on Earth – is important," Farley said. "However, as capable as our instruments aboard Perseverance are, further conclusions regarding what is contained in the Wildcat Ridge sample will have to wait until it’s returned to Earth for in-depth study as part of (NASA and European Space Agency's) Mars Sample Return campaign." https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/09/16/nasa-perseverance-rover-organic-matter-mars/10395641002/

  18. The flood of grief from the death of Queen Elizabeth II forced the British government to call a temporary halt to people joining a miles-long line to file past her coffin as it lay in state Friday. A live tracker of the queue said it was “at capacity” as waiting times reached 14 hours and the line stretched 5 miles (8km) from Parliament to Southwark Park in south London and then around the park. Caroline Quilty of London said that she got to the line around 4 a.m. Friday. “I think it is a moment in history, and if I did not come and celebrate it and see it and be part of it, I think I would really regret it,” she said. After spending a day out of the public eye King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla traveled to Wales Friday. It is the final stop before they return to London for the queen's state funeral Monday. Line to see queen 'paused' after reaching capacity A steady stream of mourners continues for the third day of paying respects to Queen Elizabeth II, who is lying in state in Westminster Hall. The crowds are the latest manifestation of a nationwide outpouring of grief for the only monarch most Britons have ever known, who died at her beloved Balmoral summer retreat Sept. 8 at age 96, ending a 70-year reign. As the line has reached capacity people are being told not to join the line to view Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin. British officials said Friday morning that the organized line was at capacity and no one will be allowed to join it for at least six hours. The line stretched for 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Parliament to Southwark Park in south London Royal family to stand vigil at Westminster Hall All eight of Queen Elizabeth II’s grandchildren will stand vigil beside her coffin on Saturday as it lies in state at Westminster Hall. King Charles III and his siblings will stand vigil Friday evening. Officials said Friday that Prince William and his brother Prince Harry, will attend the 15-minute vigil. William, who is heir to the throne, will stand at the head of the coffin and Harry at the foot. Both princes, who are military veterans, will be in uniform. Also attending will be Princes Anne’s children, Zara Tindall and Peter Philips; Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie; and the children of Prince Edward, Lady Louise Windsor and Viscount Severn. The ceremony will follow a vigil by the queen’s four children on Friday evening. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to pay their last respects by filing past the coffin during the lying-in-state, which began Wednesday and concludes Monday, the day of the queen’s funeral. Prince William, Kate greet mourners at Norfolk estate Prince William and Princess Kate, now Prince and Princess of Wales, Thursday greeted thousands of people outside Sandringham, the royal country estate in Norfolk. The couple appeared outside the gates of the 20,000-acre estate to view the sea of floral tributes left for Queen Elizabeth II and to greet thousands of well-wishers.. William and Kate walked slowly along metal barriers as they received bouquets from the public and chatted to well-wishers. 19. One of the deep sea's most elusive and spectacular creatures, the giant squid (Architeuthis dux), recently astonished a group of tourists after it washed up as a half-eaten corpse on a New Zealand beach. A tour guide who was leading the group at the time described the chance finding as a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience. The colossal cephalopod, with a mantle measuring around 13 feet (4 meters) long, was discovered Sept. 9 on the beach at Farewell Spit, a nature reserve in the north of South Island. A lone guide from the nature tour agency Farewell Spit Tours found the remains, which were half buried in sand, and quickly alerted a nearby tour group to come and take a look. After diverting to examine the squid's corpse, the group spent time marveling at the amazing animal and snapping photos next to the rare remains. "It's not a common find on any beach, so if you're able to be there at the right time, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Anton Donaldson, the Farewell Spit Tours guide who was leading the group, told The New Zealand Herald(opens in new tab). But it was also sobering to see such a "magnificent example of a large sea creature" dead Giant squids are the second-largest squids in Earth's oceans — dwarfed only by the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) — and can measure up to 43 feet (13 m) long. The hefty cephalopods, which are thought to be the real-life inspiration for the massive mythological sea creature known as the "kraken," live in deep water more than 2,950 feet (900 m) below the surface and are rarely seen in the wild. It is unclear exactly how long the dead squid's entire body measured, because most of its tentacles were incomplete or buried beneath the sand. "It looked like [the tentacles] had been chewed back by some other sea creatures, such as small sharks or fish," Donaldson said. "While I don't know for sure, I imagine it had been floating out there for a period of time and had washed up." The tour company informed New Zealand's Department of Conservation about the beached squid, and the agency will likely attempt to retrieve the remains so they can be studied, according to The New Zealand Herald. Seeing a giant squid up close may be a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience for most people, but this isn't the first time that remains of the deep-sea giants have beached on Farewell Spit's shores. In total, at least six dead giant squids have washed up on the beaches of the nature reserve in the last 30 years, a Farewell Spit Tours representative told Live Science in an email. In 2019, on the same part of the beach, another tour group came across a fully intact giant squid measuring 18 feet (5.5 m) long, Farewell Spit Tours representatives said in a statement(opens in new tab) at the time of the incident. South Africa is another location where dead giant squids are known to wash ashore. In April, an 11.5-foot-long (3.5 m) specimen washed up near Kommetjie, and in August, a 14-foot-long (4.3 m) squid was found on a beach near Cape Town. https://www.livescience.com/giant-squid-new-zealand-beach
  20. The concepts of largesse and largeness, as easy as those words may be to confuse on a Scrabble board, can rarely be applied to a new car as faithfully as to Rolls-Royce’s biggest showroom model: the inimitable Phantom. It’s also a platform ready to accept the electrified powertrain technologies of the near future and will go on to serve as the basis of every Rolls-Royce model to come. That means it will sever the most important material link between some of those existing models and other BMW Group cars, a link that has been used as a stick with which to beat Rolls-Royce in recent years. If the outgoing Phantom was the company’s ‘renaissance car’, this one could be just as significant for what’s underneath it and for what it’s capable of. The Phantom has stood relatively unchallenged at the top of our superluxury vehicle class for as long as that class has formally existed, combining unmatched extravagance and grandness with supreme comfort and refinement, remarkable drivability and incredible sense of occasion. A full Autocar road test on the new-generation version is, in our eyes, an absolute necessity – and, for the sake of the historical record if nothing else, we’re very glad that Rolls-Royce has adopted the same view. It’s time to reveal, then, exactly how groundbreaking this 2.8-tonne, 5.8m, handbuilt symbol of wealth and status really is, assessed on city roads and across country; both on the motorway and in the motorway service station car park; and measured in objective terms by satellite timing gear and – perhaps even more important – by the decibel. Having already sampled the Rolls-Royce's new flagship abroad, we’ve rather looked forward to getting the Phantom on UK roads, not least because Rolls-Royce makes some whopping claims about its ride quality. The suspension apparently makes ‘millions’ of calculations every second, reacting not only to physical inputs but also information from a windscreen-mounted camera. The eight-speed gearbox also uses satellite data to prepare for the road ahead, and there’s a layer of foam within the vast tyres to ameliorate roar. This, we suppose, is precisely what you’d want to hear if you were spending roughly £400,000 on a car, but is it borne out on the road? https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/rolls-royce/phantom
