  1. New imaging system captures text from barely open books

Rochester textual scientist Gregory Heyworth led the development of a digitization method for books with fragile binding.

Where Peril Beckons" attempts to grab potential readers with its cover art, featuring a man (whose leg is tied to a bed frame) punching another man (presumably his captor) in the face. The book offers a prime example of one of the 10,000-plus dime novels held by the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP) at the University of Rochester.

Dime novels are a form of middlebrow American literature that emerged in the 1860s. Produced weekly, they offer a large window into what topics were po[CENSORED]r among readers, particularly young boys, at the time. The problem is much of RBSCP's collection is extremely fragile and difficult to use. And this isn't unique to Rochester.

"It's rare to have them survive and have so many in one place," says Autumn Haag, assistant director of RBSCP of Rochester's collection. "They were printed on the absolute cheapest paper possible."

The low-quality paper has made the copies that have survived the last hundred-plus years so brittle that to open them would be to pull them apart. That fragility made them perfect test subjects for an unprecedented imaging system.

Led by Rochester's Gregory Heyworth, associate professor of English and textual science, a team from the Lazarus Project has developed a novel method of producing digital images of manuscripts and similarly rare and fragile books without opening them more than 30 degrees.

    Why bother with binding?

"There are entire collections that have never been properly studied simply because the books within them can't be opened," says Heyworth. "One could, of course, open them and photograph them and destroy the object. Most libraries aren't willing to do this."

Why not? What would prevent a library from taking a manuscript apart and then rebinding it? Several centuries.

Medieval manuscripts are a common acquisition for Anna Siebach-Larsen, director of the Rossell Hope Robbins Library at Rochester. On more than one occasion, she acquired a manuscript bound so tight that it could barely be opened. In these cases, the manuscript was from the Middle Ages, and the binding was from the 20th century, allowing her to send the book to a conservation lab to be rebound. However, if those same manuscripts had medieval or even 16th-century bindings, every effort would have been made to not only keep them intact but also preserve the binding.

"A manuscript is not just its text or pages," says Siebach-Larsen. "The entire book is a valuable and an important object of study, especially if the binding is original. And this isn't just for medievalists. There are many scholars who place a similar value on modern books."

Just as someone might study the Sistine Chapel's architecture in addition to the frescoes that adorn its ceiling, some researchers would be interested in a manuscript's physical composition, including the structure and the materials used as well as who made them.

A two-part system for preservation and recovery

A simple point-and-shoot approach won't produce clear, legible images from a barely open book. That's why Heyworth called on Lazarus Project team members Ken Boydston, CEO of Megavision, imaging scientist Keith Knox ʼ70, ʼ75 (Ph.D.), and project manager Dale Stewart ʼ70 to help him build an imaging system.

"The problem with photographing an object that can be opened only 30 degrees is that the depth of field is very shallow," says Heyworth.

"In other words, the top part is in focus, and the bottom isn't."

In every day photography, the lens and camera sensor (film plane) are parallel. Flat objects that are photographed in parallel to the lens and the sensor will appear sharp. Take the group out of parallel or photograph an uneven object, and the object will be sharp only where it intersects the plane of focus. This is why a person's face in a photograph will appear sharp while their ears are blurry.

Bringing a full page of a partially open book into focus required unconventional photography. The lens needed to be at a different angle than the sensor. This is Scheimpflug imaging.

New imaging system captures text from barely open books

To make the technique work, the team uses a view camera, which has an accordion-like bellows section that can be twisted. (Imagine taking a photo with an S-shaped camera.) The book being photographed is held open by a cradle that protects it from opening beyond 30 degrees. A photo is then taken from above, producing a distorted but focused image of one of the book's pages. Next, they correct the image's geometry, making it a rectangle instead of a rhombus, using unique software developed by Knox. When the process is complete, a page can be read as if the book were lying flat.

The second part of the system is multispectral imaging. Yellowed paper or stains can make pages difficult to read regardless of how open the book is. By capturing multiple wavelengths of light, the technique picks up what the human eye cannot while correcting the color.

Revealing "hidden" text is the Lazarus Project's stock-in-trade. Since 2009, the collection of scholars, scientists, and industry experts have recovered damaged cultural heritage objects, such as manuscripts, but also maps, paintings, and ancient artifacts.

The new imaging system was the result of a year and a half of work aided by a grant from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. With the success of their "dress rehearsal," the team will work to increase efficiency for commercial use.

"I think what's going to happen is that libraries who adopt this technology will really open up a time period for readers and scholars," says Heyworth.

At Rochester, dime novels could offer one such gateway for scholars interested in studying the dominant attitudes, beliefs, and values between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The MV Agusta 9.5 is a closer resemblance to the 900 Cagiva Elefant Dakar racer from the 90s as Lucky Strike, the tobacco company pays tribute to them with their Lucky Explorer Project. Unlike the 5.5 which was co-developed with QJ Motors, Benelli’s parent company thus based on the TRK502, the 9.5 is an entirely new build featuring a reworked 800 engine in MV’s arsenal. The 800 was adopted to retain its compact dimensions however everything from the cylinder head, intake and exhaust valves, counter rotating crank, conrods, main bearings, aluminium pistons and more are new. The result is a 931cc, liquid and oil-cooled triple pushing out power outputs of 121.3bhp at 10,000rpm and 102Nm at 7,000rpm. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox and an option of the automatic Rekluse clutch system that the company offers on some of its models.

The motorcycle does look the part with its neo-retro theme mixing retro body styling with newer elements like LED lighting, bending function on the headlamp, 7-inch TFT instrumentation with Bluetooth connectivity among other features. Electronic aids for the rider include an 8-level traction control, cruise control and launch control. Sachs supplies a 50mm electronic USD fork up front with remotely adjustable rebound, compression and preload while the rear monoshock, again a Sachs unit, also allows full adjustment.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal Chief Jayant Chaudhary met on Nov 23. (Image: @yadavakhilesh/Twitter)

Rashtriya Lok Dal Chief Jayant Chaudhary met Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Tuesday amidst talks of both the parties finalising alliance for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh State Assembly polls. As per information, the meeting between the two lasted for over 40 minutes and the alliance could be announced later this month.

Sources in the Samajwadi Party revealed that the meeting was kept a low profile and not many knew about the meeting until the RKD chief arrived at the residence of Akhilesh Yadav. Sources also reveal that the vehicle that ferried Jayant Chaudhary from the airport was sent from Akhilesh. The RLD chief tweeted a picture of himself with Akhilesh and wrote ‘Badhte Kadam’, hinting towards cementing the alliance between the two parties.

Akhilesh also tweeted, ‘Jayant Chaudhary Ke Sath Badlav ki Ore’. As per sources, RLD could get anywhere around 30 to 35 seats, also on some seats Samajwadi Party candidates may contest on RLD tickets as well.Earlier, there were some issues on three seats including two from Baghpat and one from Mathura between the two parties, however, now it seems that the issues have been resolved between the two parties. Now, the SP will be looking to strengthen its roots in the western UP.Earlier, in an exclusive interview with news18, the RLD chief had said that RLD and SP were working towards finalising a tie-up as soon as possible. “We are working towards a similar direction. I am also holding programmes independently, he (Akhilesh) is also holding programmes independently and we are moving towards giving a strong option to the people. The rumours about me going with the BJP are baseless. We have struggled for the past seven years. We didn’t bow down when we lost elections. Now when people are coming with us, then why would we bow down in front of the BJP?" he had said.Revealing the nitty-gritty about the alliance between SP and RLD, Jayant had said, “The alliance between the SP and RLD is taking time because there are formalities that you have to adhere to and you have to abide by those things. I have to look at many things including our candidates, our seats. There needs to be an understanding of that and that is a very important aspect of seat-sharing. But we are both working towards that.”

However, now after a meeting between the two leaders, it is expected that soon a joint press conference may be called to formally announce their alliance for the 2022 UP Polls. Sources reveal the press conference will be organised soon in Lucknow.

VILA REAL: Cristiano Ronaldo's excellent goal helped Manchester United begin life after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Tuesday and seal their place in the Champions League last 16.
Ronaldo's splendid lob was then capped by Jadon Sancho's first United goal at the Ceramica, where caretaker manager Michael Carrick dropped Bruno Fernandes to the bench.
Fernandes was on the pitch for both of United's goals after being brought on in the 66th minute, but it was Ronaldo who proved the difference again, his instinctive shot in the 78th unlocking a game that looked destined to remain goalless. After a turbulent few days that saw Solskjaer sacked following Saturday's humiliating 4-1 defeat by Watford, United were able to calm the storm with a win that leaves them three points clear at the top of Group F.
With Villarreal, in second, up against Atalanta in the final game, United, who finish at home to Young Boys, are now guaranteed to go through, and most likely in first place.
Carrick has only been placed in temporary charge, after the club outlined their plan on Sunday to install an interim coach before then making a permanent appointment next summer.
Numerous candidates have been linked, with former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde the latest name to emerge on Tuesday.Carrick, who wore a black suit and won the Champions League

  7. BMW showed us the Vision M Next Concept a couple of years back and got us dreaming. It was a low-slung, mid-engine, performance coupe that we expect to hit the production line sometime in the future. Now, the Bavarian carmaker is doing the same with an SUV body style. When it will debut in the coming weeks, the Concept XM will give us the same conjecture.

We have a single teaser so far of the Concept XM and it is more grille than anything else. It’s got an illuminated surround and it's edgier than the large grille seen on the X7. Moreover, the sharp creases meeting the grille seem to take inspiration from the M3/M4 siblings. Where the headlamp units are the most unique ones seen on a BMW, the lower bumper shares some similarities with the Vision iNext Concept.

There are rumours of a larger X8 flagship SUV in the works. We reckon the Concept XM would have some contribution to the same. Since the Concept XM will be more of a show car, the performance and powertrain details are under covers and will be exaggerated figures when revealed. Expect a futuristic cabin as well.

More details of the BMW Concept XM will be revealed closer to the reveal date. We could expect a road-going version in a couple of years.

  8. While OnePlus and Realme already have their TV offerings in the Indian market, now according to a trustworthy source, their sister company Oppo will be joining the party pretty soon as well.

According to a report by 91Mobiles, there are speculations that the company's K9 series will enter the country soon.

The K9 TV family is already selling in China and goes up to 75-inch in size with 60Hz LCD panels with support HDR10+ and HLG.They are powered by MediaTek SoCs and run on the company's ColorOS TV 2.0 software. As per the report, while the announcement of the lineup will likely happen pretty soon, the first units will hit the market in the first quarter of 2022. However, it's yet to be learnt if all models will be made available in India or just some of them.

Oppo Smart TV K9 series price in China
Oppo Smart TV K9 65-inch is priced at CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 45,600), the 55-inch model is priced at CNY 2,799 (roughly Rs. 32,000), and the 43-inch model is priced at CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 22,800).It can be speculated that Oppo K9 TVs, if launched in India, could carry similar price tags as its Chinese counterparts.

  10. following the launch of the EV6, the Kia Concept EV9 hints at the next model in Kia’s dedicated EV line-up, as the South Korean carmaker showcased the SUV concept at the ongoing 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show or the LA Auto Show. Kia, in its presentation, said that the EV9 concept represents the brand’s growth in designing and developing desirable, high-tech, zero-emissions vehicles. Just like the EV6, the EV9 concept is developed and optimized on the company’s advanced Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The styling is based on the company’s Opposites United design language, giving the concept its bold and angular exterior. The Kia EV9 electric concept measures 4,930mm in length, 2,055mm in width, 1,790mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,100mm. The all-electric SUV delivers a driving range of up to 482km. It also features next-generation ultra-fast charging technology with a 350kW charger that allows its advanced battery-electric powertrain to replenish energy from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 20-30 minutes. As the design language suggests, the Kia EV9 concept is built inside out, meaning the designers first shaped the interiors of the electric SUV and then worked their way to the exterior. As such, it blends the profile with a modern and sleek interior space that is influenced by state-of-the-art tech. Its rugged and upright stance is also a result of the new design language, while the proportions indicate a large SUV with three rows that comfortably sits 6-7 passengers. Kia’s tiger face grille takes precedence at the front and also houses a star cloud pattern that hides behind the body panel when not in use. It creates a ‘welcome light’ for the driver and also functions to appropriately position lights during driving. The star cloud pattern inspired the Kia design team to create vertical Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) for both the front and rear, creating a unique signature look. The hood vent duct area is utilized as a solar panel that helps recuperate some of the electric energy that Concept EV9 uses. In profile, the all-electric SUV looks rather meek but features a distinctive outline with its low gravity side body and sharp crystalline-inspired fender that sits high up. This effect makes the fender of the Concept EV9 pop out, resulting in a strong SUV stance. The sharp and edged elements also offset its road presence.Mirroring the exterior design, the interior of Concept EV9 has also been greatly influenced by the design of Opposites United. The panoramic roof adds to the sense of airiness to the cabin. A 27-inch ultra-wide display serves as the nerve center for all driver and passenger requirements, including media, climate control, and comfort functionality features. A pop-up steering pad is also unique to the Kia EV9 all-electric SUV concept. Kia also offers three interior modes- Active, Pause, and Enjoy. Recycled fishnets have been used to help create the flooring of the vehicle and seating fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles and recycled wool. Also, vegan leather was used throughout the interior space. Kia plans to gradually reduce the use of animal leather in all its vehicles.
