  1. The F4 5G aims to strike a good balance between performance and aesthetics Poco has just unveiled its next generation F series smartphone called the Poco F4 5G. It's not a direct successor to the gaming-focused Poco F3 GT (Review) which launched last year, but can be seen as more of a premium offering in the mid-range space. The F series has always been about delivering flagship-grade performance at very affordable prices, however, rather than focusing on just the specs, the F4 5G aims to strike a balance between powerful specifications and a premium design. We've got our hands on a unit, so let's see what's it all about. Let's kick things off with the configurations. Poco has announced three variants in India with 6GB, 8GB and 12GB of RAM. The 6GB and 8GB variants have 128GB of storage and are priced at Rs. 27,999 and Rs. 29,999 respectively, while the 12GB variant has 256GB of storage and is priced at Rs. 33,999. There's no microSD card slot in this phone. Poco is also offering an additional one year of warranty with the F4 5G and it has announced some heavy discounts of up to Rs. 4,000 if you buy the phone on launch day (June 27). My first impression of the Poco F4 5G is that it's a good-looking smartphone, especially in this Nebula Green finish. The matte texture for the plastic frame and the glass back panel gives it very premium and sophisticated look. It's also available in a Night Black colour. The dimensions of the phone and rounded edges of the frame make it quite comfortable to hold. The Poco F4 5G measures just 7.7mm in thickness and weighs 195g. The bundle also includes a silicone protective case. You'll find the usual selection of ports and buttons all in familiar places on the Poco F4 5G. There's no headphone jack but you do get an infrared emitter. Oddly, there's no in-display fingerprint sensor despite this phone using an AMOLED display, but the side-mounted one works just as well. The Poco F4 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, which is a powerful 5G SoC for heavy multitasking and gaming. The phone supports 10 5G bands in total along with dual-5G standby. Poco has gone with a 4,500mAh battery for the F4 5G. There's support for 67W fast charging and this charger is included in the box. Wireless charging is not supported.
  2. Apple accused of standing in the way of browser innovation An engineer who has spent the last decade working across web browser projects at Google and Microsoft has ridiculed the characterization of Apple as a champion of choice. In a new blog post(opens in new tab), Alex Russell argues that in reality the opposite is true; he claims Apple has deliberately wielded its influence in the hardware and mobile OS markets to “undermine browser engine diversity”. “Contrary to claims of Apple partisans, iOS engine restrictions are not preventing a ‘takeover’ by Chromium - at least that’s not the primary effect,” he wrote. “Apple uses its power over browsers to strip-mine and sabotage the web, hurting all engine projects and draining the web of future potential.” The case against Apple According to Russell, Apple stands in the way of diversity in the web browser market in a variety of ways, each of which he unpacks in turn. The main criticism is that the company continues to force developers to reskin its inferior WebKit engine if they want to put out a browser on iOS, a platform used by more than a billion people worldwide. Although Russell nods to the quality of the developers working on WebKit, he claims Apple has significantly underfunded the browser engine, which is maintained by a “skeleton staff” and is therefore incapable of competing with the likes of Blink (based on Chromium). The result, he says, is that third-party developers incur significant additional costs associated with building their apps for multiple engines and the iOS browser market is simultaneously starved of innovation. Mozilla, the maker of Firefox, is cited as having delayed its entry to iOS by “around seven years” as a result of Apple’s stringent requirements.“Today, Apple doesn’t compete outside its home turf, and when it has agency, it prevents others from doing so. These are not the actions of a firm that is consciously attempting to promote engine diversity. If Apple is an ally in that cause, it is only by accident,” said Russell. Chromium dismiss Apple’s power over a situation it created and recommits to annually through its budgeting process.” Russell also took aim at the reluctance with which Apple introduced the ability to change the default browser in iOS. Only once antitrust regulators began sniffing around did Apple take these steps in 2020. In some cases, iOS would still override the new default when links were opened from within certain apps, which Russell says created a split browser experience that had a negative impact on users, developers, and publishers alike. “The pantomime of browser choice on iOS has created an anaemic, amnesiac web. Tapping links is more slogging than surfing when autofill fails, passwords are lost, and login state is forgotten. Browsers become less valuable as the web stops being a reliable way to complete tasks.” “By simultaneously taking a massive pot of cash for browser-building off the table, returning the least it can to engine development, and preventing others from filling the gap, Apple has foundationally imperilled the web ecosystem by destroying the utility of a diverse po[CENSORED]tion of browsers and engines.”TechRadar Pro has asked Apple for a response to Russel’s arguments.
  3. The company's swift bankruptcy proceedings will see it sell two massive lots of PC parts to pay off debt. Leftover PC inventory from recently bankrupt PC builder Artesian Builds will be sold at auction tomorrow, including large quantities of motherboards, RAM kits, fans, partially built PCs, coolers, CPUs, and even a number of graphics cards. Two lots of PC parts from the company's California and North Carolina sites will be sold to the highest bidder via Zoom. Each lot will be sold as a combined purchase, with new bids having to be made in $5,000 increments or more. That means your average PC builder is likely priced out of the affair. Other PC building companies may well be interested in the haul, however, as the two lots include pretty much everything they would require to build a lot of machines. Such as: 43 partially built PCs 413 cases 360 CPUs 359 PSUs 219 RAM kits 283 coolers 167 SSDs + HDDs 59 graphics cards 346 motherboards There is also office equipment and miscellaneous tools included in the sales, which at one time would have served Artesian Builds' roughly 50 employees. This equipment can be seen in the various images of the company's two locations, included in the legal notice of the sale, most of which appears to have been left as it was during the company's final days of operation. Artesian Builds is said to have held onto around $917,595 worth of inventory at the time of its closure, so you'd expect large sums of money to exchange hands at the auction for the leftover goods. Though it's not only inventory that has remained in stasis since the company shuttered. Many customer orders are said to have been left outstanding by its sudden closure. On its final balance sheet, filed in California as a part of bankruptcy proceedings, the company is listed to have an estimated $1.37 million in unfulfilled orders. An ex-employee told us at the time that there are at least "hundreds" of outstanding gaming PC orders. Some customers also reported that they were having little luck in remunerations from the company, including one whose son had ordered a $5,100 PC in December 2021. They ended up filing a dispute with their credit card company and buying a PC elsewhere, as reportedly so did others in the Artesian Builds Discord server https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/artesian-builds-auction/
