  1. Google has announced the launch of ChromeOS Flex, a lighter operating system that can kickstart your old PC or Mac by transforming it into a Chromebook-esque device. First announced back in February 2022, ChromeOS Flex is available now to download on many Windows and macOS devices, with Google saying it is especially handy for older machines, giving businesses and schools in particular more flexibility on their software choices. The new operating system is available to download on 295 certified models, and even more that have not been officially tested by Google’s engineers. Google-approved models(opens in new tab) include many MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, plenty of Dell and HP models, and a whole load more.Running Running ChromeOS on Windows and macOS devices Google claims “software bloat, clunky hardware, and security vulnerabilities can cause unwanted damage” in an analogy it compares to sun damage. The fix - or sunscreen, as Google puts it - is to install its new ChromeOS Flex on older machines. The "cloud-first" software looks similar to the equivalent already seen on Chromebook devices, offering a stripped-back way to access Google Workspace tools such as Gmail, Meet, Google Docs, with thousands of apps available from the Play Store. The process of upgrading has been designed to be as easy as possible, with ChromeOS Flex able to be rapidly deployed via USB or through your company network. The company says that “devices don’t slow down over time” which should help contribute to a reduction in e-waste, of which 40 million tons worldwide are said to be generated each year - the equivalent of 800 laptops per second. ChromeOS Flex should also be an average of 19% more energy efficient, or says says the company in a release on its blog(opens in new tab) published by Thomas Riedl, Enterprise and Education Director of Product. Background updates will also continue to keep devices running the latest ChromeOS Flex interface up to date to ensure security protection. Google is pitching this at businesses and educational establishments, to whom this should be welcome news leading to a reduction in capital investment as devices last longer. That said, it may not be suitable for everybody with many organizations relying on Windows-only or macOS-only applications to get work done. 2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4's official renders have reportedly been leaked. Based on a recent report, the buttons of the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 4 appear slightly larger and more pronounced. The camera lenses are said to be protruding, and will reportedly offer a premium imaging experience. The hinge of the handset is said to been made narrower and situated closer to the screen. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 was spotted on the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) database recently. The price of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was tipped to be the same as the predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. The design of the foldable smartphone from Samsung is said to be almost similar to that of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. As mentioned above, slight changes that have been said to be incorporated to the design of the upcoming handset include slightly larger, more pronounced, and “clickier” button. To recall, the camera lenses of the handset were said to be protruding and are expected to offer a high imaging experience. The hinge of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has also been said to made narrower, tipped to be situated closer to the screen. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 was recently spotted on the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) database. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 bearing model numbers SM-F721U and SM-F721U1 have surfaced on the FCC database. A few days back, according to tipster Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings), the smartphone was reported to have been spotted on the BIS India certification website with the model number SM-F721B. The price of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was earlier tipped to be the same as the predecessor the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was launched at the starting prices of Rs. 84,999. The smartphone is expected to come with a 2.1-inch Super AMOLED outer display as well. Under the hood, the handset is believed to be powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC coupled with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of onboard storage. For optics, this smartphone may house a 12-megapixel dual rear camera setup as well as a 10-megapixel selfie shooter. It could also pack a 3,700mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging and 10W wireless charging support. Noise co-founder Amit Khatri joins Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast, for a special episode. 3. The Corsair K70 Pro Mini Wireless is a versatile, highly customizable keyboard with outstanding responsiveness. Scratchy switches and rattly stabilizers challenge its high asking price, but it remains an excellent choice for gamers with big budgets and a desire for compactness. Pros + Compact size saves desk space, is great for FPS games + Great for travel + Exceptionally programmable + Outstanding responsiveness + Supports hot-swapping switches Cons - Scratchy switches don’t sound or feel great - Rattly stabilizers - Very expensive - Position of Fn key makes using secondary functions in games difficult Corsair released its first ultra-compact K65 RGB Mini gaming keyboard just over a year ago. And, today, it’s finally ready to reveal its successor: the K70 Pro Mini Wireless. On the surface, the two keyboards have a lot in common. Both feature a space-saving 60-percent layout and a heaping helping of secondary functions tied to nearly every key. But this new keyboard is about more than just a fresh name. It features upgrades inside and out, cutting the cord with Corsair’s high-speed Slipstream wireless technology and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as featuring the same AXON processor found on the company’s flagship K100 gaming keyboard. It’s also Corsair’s first to feature hot-swappable switches, making it the most customizable keyboard the company has ever released. All of this comes at a high price of $180, putting it right in line with the Steelseries Apex Pro Mini, sans cable, and making it more expensive than most of the best gaming keyboards available today. That high price also comes with a significant learning curve that may be a turn-off to the productivity-minded, as its dozens of missing keys and secondary functions are all tied to Fn combinations that need to be memorized to use efficiently. For gaming, desk space, and travel, however, the K70 Pro Mini has a lot to offer. Corsair K70 Pro Mini Wireless Specs SwitchesCherry MX Red or Cherry MX Silver LightingPer-key RGB Onboard Storage50 profiles Media KeysSecondary keybinds ConnectivityDetachable braided USB-C Cable, Slipstream Wireless, Bluetooth Battery LifeUp to 32 hours with RGB backlighting, 200 hours with backlighting disabled Additional PortsNone KeycapsDoubleshot PBT plastic ConstructionPlastic case with aluminum alloy top plate SoftwareCorsair iCUE Dimensions (LxWxH)11.6 x 4.3 x 1.58 inches Weight 1.42lbs Design and Construction of the Corsair K70 Pro Mini Wireless The Corsair K70 Pro Mini Wireless is a 60-percent keyboard, and Corsair leans into its tiny size. This slimmed down layout does away with the function row, number pad, and navigation keys, relegating each of these functions (as well as extras like lighting and media controls) to secondary layers accessible with Fn combinations. The result is one of the smallest keyboards you can buy without venturing into the even more niche 40-percent market. We don’t usually remark on packaging here at Tom’s Hardware, but the K70 Pro Mini’s box is so small that it doesn’t even look like it holds a keyboard at first. This layout is a staple in the custom keyboard community and has been slowly gaining po[CENSORED]rity among gamers for years. By removing all but the most important keys, you’re left with a functional keyboard that’s nearly six inches shorter and more than two inches narrower than Corsair’s full-size K70 RGB Pro. That amounts to some serious space savings on your desk, more room for your mouse hand to make big sweeps in first-person shooters, and more ergonomic spacing for your arms when it’s time to get work done (or browsr Twitter). To make that layout work, the majority of missing keys are accessible through secondary functions accessed by holding the Fn key and pressing the requisite switch. Instead of dedicated arrow keys, you can press Fn+IJKL. Home and End are Fn+N and Fn+M. The function buttons are all tied to Fn and their matching number key. Corsair even expands this functionality by adding mouse controls, media controls, onboard macro recording, Bluetooth switching, and a battery level indicator all to their own button combos. All of that is a lot to remember, but thankfully every key has its second function printed on the side of the keycap. These are easy to see from a normal sitting position, but I did have to stop and check those legends regularly throughout my first week of use. They’re not backlit like the regular legends either, so using the keyboard in a dimly lit room may prove difficult until you have them all memorized. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-k70-pro-mini-wireless

As per a report, Redmi and Poco are also expected to launch a bunch of smartphones in global markets. Xiaomi has already launched the Xiaomi 12S series in China and there have been a lot of rumours around the Xiaomi 12T smartphone series lately. The series is speculated to arrive with the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC under the hood. As per a report by Rootmygalaxy, a huge list of phones from Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco have been spotted on EEC website suggesting their global launch. The listing shows that the model numbers of the phones have “22” prefix that is said to denote the year of launch and suffixes are regions where “I” stands for India. There are a total of five phones that have “I” suffix. The report also says that Xiaomi may launch the Xiaomi 12T, the Xiaomi 12T Pro, the Xiaomi 12T Pro HyperCharge, and the Xiaomi 12S soon in global markets soon. Redmi K50i 5G Confirmed to Get MediaTek Dimensity 8100 SoC Ahead of Launch It is to be noted that the Chinese company recently launched the Xiaomi 12S series in China. The series has the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the Xiaomi 12S Pro, and the Xiaomi 12S smartphones. They are all powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Rumours have suggested that just like the Xiaomi 12S series, phones in the alleged Xiaomi 12T series will also be powered by Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset. The listing on EEC certification also shows model numbers of smartphones that reportedly belong to the Redmi K50S series. The Redmi K50S series was previously spotted on Mi Code. 7. Some big changes are coming to your Android video calls as Google rolls out the first part of its upgrade aimed at sunsetting Google Duo. The video conferencing service, first released back in 2016, will soon become Google Meet as the company looks to combine its consumer and enterprise tools into a single platform. The first phase of the merger has now begun rolling out to Android users, who can download and update to the new version of the software now to find out more about what's in store. Google Duo upgrade 9to5Google(opens in new tab) spotted that users upgrading to the latest version of Google Duo are now seeing an alert when opening the app instructing them about the change. "Duo is getting even better," it reads. "Your Duo app will become Meet, with a new name and icon, and more features like background effects." The company has also provided a link(opens in new tab) for users to learn more about Google Meet where it outlines a number of the useful upgrades and new additions. These include in-meeting chat, applying virtual backgrounds and visual effects, and starting a call with up to 100 participants. Users only need to be signed in with a Google account in order to try the new software and all its features, as accounts set up with only a phone number won't be able to use meetings. "Google Meet features will be added to the Google Duo app through app updates. By the end of 2022, the updated Duo app will then be renamed Google Meet," the company notes. Duo users will still be able to use the app, which Google says will retain all the tools that have made it so po[CENSORED]r, including making calls via a phone number or email address, using filters and effects, sending messages, and asking Google Assistant to call using existing devices. All Duo user conversation history, contacts, and messages will continue to be saved in the app, Google added, and there will be no new app to download or extra costs to pay. 8. Innocn delivers a winning combination with a value-laden 15.6-inch OLED monitor. Pros + OLED delivers vibrant colors and inky blacks + Bright panel + Value pricing + Excellent build quality Cons - Glossy finish isn’t for everyone - Thick bottom bezel - No headphone jack The portable monitor category is expanding at a rapid clip, and we've already reviewed a lot of compelling options from the likes of Asus, Lenovo, KYY and countless others. Now, we're looking at an entry from Chinese OEM Innocn, which offers portable OLED monitors that are priced more like IPS panels that we typically see in this category. Last month, Innocn 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch portable OLED monitors were sold at less than $200 each, undercutting some of the best IPS panels that we've reviewed. Here, we're checking out the Innocn 15A1F, which is the 15.6-inch model. The monitor offers premium build quality, a detachable (and adjustable) metal stand, stereo speakers and plenty of ports. Innocn doesn't offer features like a built-in battery or touch capabilities, but with an MSRP of $349, the 15A1F packs a value punch. And with frequent sales that put the monitor below the $200 price point, the Innocn 15A1F looks like a prime contender for our best portable monitors list. SpeakersYes Weight1.6 pounds Design of the Innocn 15A1F I'll start off first by saying that 15A1F has good build quality that belies its affordable pricing. There is minimal flex in the aluminum alloy chassis, although I doubt that you'll be regularly twisting the 15A1F to its limits in normal operation. The overall design is smooth and minimalist, without superfluous touches. The front of the monitor presents a design with thin bezels around the top and two sides. However, the bottom bezel is massive in comparison, with centrally-mounted InnoCN branding. The right side of the monitor only features perforations for one of the two integrated speakers. Moving to the top, you'll find two buttons: power and a rocker switch. The power button also doubles as "Enter" when navigating the OSD. An LED between the two buttons glows blue when the monitor is operational. The left side of the display is home to a Mini-HDMI port and two USB-C ports. This is also where you'll find a second set of perforations for the second integrated speaker. Interestingly, there is no headphone jack, something which most portable monitors have. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/innocn-15a1f-portable-monitor

  10. Microsoft Edge, the browser of business? Although Google Chrome continues to dominate the web browser rankings, Microsoft’s flagship service is making headway in an important market, new data shows. A survey of 3,000 employees conducted by TechRadar Pro, in collaboration with Perimeter 81, revealed that Microsoft Edge is the preferred web browser of the largest proportion of businesses (37.77%). Although Google Chrome isn’t far behind (33.01%), the share enjoyed by Edge in the business world is far greater than its position in the broader market, which Statcounter places at roughly 4%. An uphill battle for Microsoft Edge Although the Microsoft Edge user base expanded rapidly in the months following its relaunch in early 2020, many of these gains stemmed from the retirement of Edge Legacy and Internet Explorer. Despite a consistent stream of feature updates, renewed marketing efforts and the integration of Edge into the company’s new Windows 11 operating system, Microsoft has since struggled to move the needle in any significant way. The latest data shows that, although Edge has leapfrogged Firefox in the rankings, it still falls a long way shy of Safari (18%) and Chrome (65%), the two default browsers on iOS and Android, respectively. Microsoft has also scored a number of own goals that are unlikely to have ingratiated the new browser with potential new users. For instance, the company was recently forced to walk back a policy that added an unreasonable amount of friction to the process of changing the default browser after users made their displeasure known. Microsoft also came under fire for efforts to block links opened via its own services (e.g. Windows 11 widgets, the Start Menu etc.) from launching in any other browser but Edge, another tactic that drew criticism from the community. However, the indication that Edge has become the browser of choice in the business sphere will lift the spirits at Microsoft, suggesting the company’s efforts to lean into qualities like security are paying dividends. Within the last year, for example, the company has bolstered the in-built password manager, rolled out an integrated VPN service and introduced a “Super Duper Secure mode” designed to shield against all manner of browser-based attacks. If Microsoft Edge is to compete head-to-head with the market leaders, the team will need to stake a claim to a particular niche or use case. In the business market, perhaps it has found one. 11. he CrowPi L is a powerful Raspberry-Pi powered laptop and effective STEM kit for kids, but you’ll need to pay a premium to take advantage of the available hardware tutorials the system has to offer. Pros + Built-in internal battery + Easy to follow Scratch-based and Python tutorials + Fun game design programming lessons and hardware projects + External monitor and dual-boot system support Cons - Doesn’t work with Raspberry Pi 3 and older - Sensors and controllers needed for hardware projects are not included in the basic kit - Some tutorials have unclear instructions The CrowPi L is a Raspberry Pi-powered laptop built to educate, engage and entertain young minds and usher them into the world of programming and electronics. It incorporates fun activities and interactive lessons to teach kids how to code. The kit includes lots of tutorials to try and a wide range of projects that would appeal to a variety of different interests. From lessons on how to design and program games, to hands-on projects that explain electronic concepts and how circuitry works, there’s a lot for kids to learn and enjoy. Starting at $239 (currently on sale for $203(opens in new tab)), the CrowPi L comes with a USB wireless mouse, a 32 GB microSD card loaded with the custom OS, educational software, and a custom GPIO expansion shield for hardware projects. Pricing and Availability The CrowPi L is available in a few different configurations. You can choose from the basic model or advanced model, which costs about $60 more because it includes the Crowtail Starter Kit for Raspberry Pi. Shipped in a separate box, this kit contains the different motors and sensors you will need for the Letscode (Elecrow’s custom version of the Scratch programming language) and Python hardware projects. The laptop only comes in matte white, but you have an option of getting either a white or black keyboard. On Elecrow’s site, you also have the option to add either a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB or 8GB to the purchase, should you not have your own. Our review sample was an advanced model which came with a white keyboard and the Crowtail Starter Kit but did not include a Raspberry Pi. We should note that the CrowPi L is not compatible with Raspberry Pi 3 or older, so if you do not have a Raspberry Pi 4 then you must include it as an add-on (or buy one elsewhere). The company claims to have included this option to help during the chip shortage. The price of the Raspberry Pi 4 is still way above its original MSRP, but Elecrow’s site sells it much cheaper than Amazon(opens in new tab) right now. 12. Battlefield 2042’s current state is… dismal, to say the least. A lack of players, a structurally broken game, and not very many updates coming out only exacerbate the problem. Though, as of today, EA and DICE are currently releasing a new update for the title, meant at tearing down the potentially hundreds of bugs still inside. The main point of this update is to bring Quality of Life fixes and balancing, as well as the aforementioned bug fixes. In a tweet below from Battlefield Direct Communication on Twitter, the update was released this morning, along with a link to the update’s patch notes included as well. Some of the Battlefield 2042 update’s balance changes include weakening some vehicles and buffing DMRs as the former was deemed too strong for the current game, and the latter as underperforming. Alongside those changes, DICE is also adding in new XP scoring events for Pilot Kills and various other objectives (like disarming mines or repairing equipment). That being said, other highlights include adding in smaller map variants for four existing maps (Battle of the Bulge, El Alamein, Kaleidoscope, and Manifest, respectively), which can be used for game modes such as Team Deathmatch, Free for All, and Vehicle TDM, as well as adding in new features to the Rules Editor in custom games. Lots of Battlefield 2042’s inner workings also got various fixes, like fixing a bug where you could be left behind when your group leader and other teammates have already loaded into a match. The game also has character bugfixes, such as for Lis’s G-84 TGM missile (it could bounce off bushes for some reason) or Sundance’s Anti Armor grenade (it was previously able to target a G-84 TGM missile fired by Lis). Below, you'll see an image set with every patch note:The new Battlefield 2042 update is available today, and DICE also states in the patch notes link that another update has a targeted release for next month. Battlefield 2042 is available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and EA’s Origin client. https://wccftech.com/battlefield-2042-update-1-1-brings-several-improvements-balance-changes-and-fixes/

  15. What is Google Docs Pageless? The new collaboration tool explained. Google Docs(opens in new tab) is set to get a whole lot more collaborative as the platform rolls out its latest upgrade. First announced at Google I/O 2021 and rolling out to users now, the new Pageless feature essentially gives you and whoever else you share your documents with, extra space to make alterations, suggestions and edits. Instead of being confined by the usual set rules and lines of normal office software(opens in new tab) tools, Google Docs Pageless looks to offer a much more interactive and rewarding way to create the perfect document - so how does it work, and how can you get it? Google Docs Pageless When announced, Google said Pageless editing was looking to help address the fact that less physical documents were being created by businesses during the pandemic. This meant that features such as margins and page breaks no longer hold the weight they once did, opening the door for the new pageless format. Now, documents will expand to the full screen of whatever device the user has, whether desktop, laptop or mobile, with images and tables in particular gaining a new lease of life as they now extend across the previous margins. You'll only need a Google Account to try Pageless, with users (including TechRadar Pro) are now being given the option to try out the new feature when launching a new Google Doc, but if you've missed the alert, or want to give it another go, here's what you need to do: Google Docs on Web/Chrome Open Google Docs. Choose the document you want to edit Click File > Page Setup > Pageless This menu will also give you the option to change the background color from the default white choice, for example if you're a dark mode fan. Google Docs on Android Open your Google Docs app Select and open the document you want to edit Select the Edit icon in the lower right of the screen, then the three dot "overflow" menu in the top-right Tap Page Setup, then switch on Pageless We've rounded up the best online collaboration tools around https://www.techradar.com/news/google-docs-pageless-is-opening-up-your-documents-like-never-before

The Alienware x15 R2 ($2,890.99 configured, $2,106.99 to start) follows suit and also sports an attractive 15.6-inch, 2560 x 1440 display option with a 240 Hz refresh rate for esports players using high frame rates and more intensive games with detailed graphics. Although the x15 R2 has a relatively clean and thin design for a gaming laptop, its Intel Core i7-12700H and Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070 Ti utilize the laptop’s quad-fan cooling system and its Element 31 thermal interface material to improve the cooling efficiency. 19. A small change, but a welcome one. Blizzard has made a notable change to one of its new Overwatch 2 maps thanks to player feedback. As spotted by Polygon(opens in new tab), Twitter user ClearTogether pointed out the use of hostile architecture in Midtown—a New York-inspired map being introduced in Overwatch 2. The first beta had the map dotted with sectioned benches, a common structure used to deter homeless people from sleeping on them. "Overwatch being an 'aspirational universe,' I just find it depressing at worse and out-of-place at best," ClearTogether had tweeted about the map decor in early June. Now, in the game's second beta, those benches have been altered. ClearTogether followed up on Wednesday, tweeting "thank you SO much to the Overwatch team for deciding to change this!! It's honestly overall a small change but goes a long way." Lead narrative designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie called it(opens in new tab) "great feedback," adding that "'how we hope the world will be' is a big part of our story dev."It's not the only alteration the Overwatch team has recently made in an attempt to distance itself from crappy things happening in the real world. Last year, damage hero McCree received a name change(opens in new tab) after his namesake was dismissed from Blizzard for his involvement in the infamous "Cosby suite" group chats. Of course, Blizzard still has a long way to go. Less hostile benches don't exactly make allegations of misconduct and sexual harassment go away overnight. Unless you're Activision Blizzard, conducting an investigation into Activision Blizzard, finding that there's no evidence of any wrongdoing(opens in new tab) at Activision Blizzard. https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-2-removed-hostile-architecture-from-new-map-at-fan-request/
  20. A well-rounded overclocking-focused flagship board for under $700 Priced at $700 direct from EVGA, the Z690 Dark Kingpin is a feature-rich flagship-class motherboard that nearly has it all. Designed with extreme overclocking in mind, it sports robust power delivery, Probe IT connectivity and onboard switches and buttons. There are plenty of features to satisfy the average user as well. Pros + All-black style + Horizontal connectors + Robust VRMs, 90A MOSFETs Cons - No PCIe 5.0 M.2 socket (SLI instead) - Only three M.2 sockets - No RGB lighting (a pro for some) - Previous-gen audio Like it or not–and clearly only the motherboard makers like it–flagship boards these days often push up to or even above the $1,000 mark, all in the quest for the best features and performance. The EVGA Z690 Dark Kingpin (officially stylized K|NGP|N) hit the shelves priced at $849.99 and, as of today, is a more reasonable $699.99. Among flagship moboss, that price is comparitively reasonable when competitors cost between $900 and $1,200. The Z690 Dark has an updated appearance that carries over EVGA’s signature black styling, robust power delivery, horizontal connectors and a unique socket orientation that sets it apart from other boards. Performance-wise, the Dark Kingpin lit up the charts as one of the fastest boards across our multi-threaded tests, and nearly did a clean sweep as the best-performing board in our Procyon Office tests. Single-threaded portions of our tests didn’t fare as well, but the board was still average across most of those tests. Gaming performance was also above average. Overall, this is a well-perofrming board out of the box, especially when pushed with heavy multi-threaded loads. This board also has almost every high-end feature you can expect at the flagship level. You get two full-length PCIe 5.0 slots (and SLI support), 21-phase 90A MOSFETs, three M.2 sockets (though none are PCIe 5.0), eight SATA ports and a "legacy" U.2 port, a premium (though last-gen) audio codec with NU Audio software and dual 2.5 GbE ports along with integrated Wi-Fi 6E. What sets the Kingpin apart from the other luxury boards is all the overclocking-focused functionality. Where most focus on style and shoehorning in extra features , the Kingpin has a slew of switches, buttons and headers on board (to connect the ProbeIt tool) to help push your Alder Lake system to the limit. Before we get into the details and see if this board has a chance to make our best motherboards list, here are its detailed specifications, direct from EVGA. You get common items such as SATA cables and a Wi-Fi antenna, as well as some more unique items, including a full-size PCB that displays and labels the major parts on the board. It even comes with a PCIe Release Assist bar (a long piece of PCB to reach the PCIe latch) and additional thermal pads for M.2 modules. Below is a complete list of the included extras: Case badge Driver USB disk Tall standoffs Screw sets (M.2) PCIe Release Assist Probe IT Cable Thermal pads (4) SATA cables Wi-Fi antenna PCB Legend Design of the Z690 Dark Kingpin Taking the board out of the box, we’re greeted by a 10-layer black PCB, with sparse gold highlights dotting the board. There are large, actively cooled VRM heatsinks connected via a heat pipe, covered by a vented shroud, with the Z690 Dark branding in white. The biggest difference between this board and others is the rotated socket area, with the RAM slots up top and the VRM bank on the left (normal) and bottom. Along the right edge of the board, you’ll find a large notch cut out and horizontal connectors to help with cable management, and several buttons and switches for overclocking and other board functions. The bottom portion of the board is covered in shrouds and heatsinks, with the Dark branding cut out out of the large heatsink covering all three M.2 sockets. While there are literally dozens of LEDs on this board, none are RGB (they're mostly white) or designed specifically for looks. If you want to add RGB lighting to your case, you’ll need to use the headers hidden along the bottom edge. Overall, I like the look of the Dark Kingpin. While it won’t stick out on its own, the stealthy black look makes for a great centerpiece for your build. On the upper-left side, we get a better look at the vented shroud, socket area and the right edge. The circular vents in the shroud allow fresh air to reach the small fan hidden below. The tiny fan was inaudible during our testing, blowing the fresh air over the VRMs and kept the hardy power bits running cool. Above the socket are the two unreinforced DRAM slots that lock the sticks down on both sides. The Z690 Dark supports DDR5 up to 64GB with speeds listed up to DDR5-6600(OC). As always, your mileage may vary on reaching those speeds but with two slots and using a maximum of two sticks; the potential to reach that high is greater. Above the DRAM slots on the top edge, instead of seeing 8-pin EPS connectors we run into the Probe IT header, which is a convenient way to measure the system's voltage. EVGA includes an adapter cable that connects to the header, allowing you to check the voltage with a multimeter easily. This is a great feature for the sub-ambient/extreme overclocking crowd or anyone looking to get every last Mhz out of their processor. Just off to the right are a slew (22, to be specific) of status LEDs for varying functionality. It shows the status of PCIe slots, M.2 sockets, voltage, and more. Additionally, there are another dozen or so LEDs on board that also indicate the status of hardware. Please refer to the manual to see what each does. Just off to the right is a vertical USB 2.0 port used for updating the BIOS (this board has THREE) without a CPU installed. Advertisement The board's right edge is where most connectivity is located. First, in the upper-right corner, we run into a multi-function POST indicator with two two-character LEDs. You can configure the display to show data in decimal format (default) or hexadecimal. After POST, the same LEDs can display hardware monitoring details, including CPU temperatures and voltages. The Safe Boot and power/reset buttons are near the display. Next, we hit the first two (of seven available) fan headers (CPU_FAN1/2). These headers support PWM fans and output up to 2A/24W. To the right of the socket between the VRMs and the right edge are two more fan headers (AUX_Fan and PUMP1), while the last two are tucked in the bottom-right corner. The AUX header supports PWM and DC-controlled fans, with the PUMP1 header able to output 3A/36W. Continuing down the right edge, we spy the 24-pin EPS connector to power the board and the two 8-pin EPS connectors (one required). Below is a USB 3.2 Gen1 header and a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C header. Moving toward the middle of the board, we run into three different switches. The first (top) is a BIOS slow mode switch. Directly below that is a three-position switch to access all three BIOSes. Finally, five DIP switches are between the BIOS switch and the USB 3.2 Gen1 connector to disable/enable PCIe slots. The only active switches are one and two, which control the two full-length PCIe slots. The Dark Kingpin's overclocking pedigree comes with a 21-phase VRM, with 18 phases dedicated to Vcore. Power goes from the two 8-pin EPS connectors (one required) onto a Renesas RAA229131 20-channel controller. Power flows to 18 Intersil ISLL99390 90A power stages. Some napkin math says there is 1,620A available for just the processor, which is plenty for ambient and extreme overclocking. You’ll be limited by the temperatures long before this power delivery hinders progress. Advertisement https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/evga-z690-dark-kingpin
