  1. In brief: Nvidia is looking to resurrect the RTX 2060 with double the original amount of VRAM, possibly as soon as the first quarter of 2022. In the meantime, a passionate modder has upgraded an existing RTX 2060 card in the same way to see what sort of performance boost one could expect. Over the last few months, we've heard several rumors that Nvidia could soon launch updated RTX 3000 series graphics cards and resurrect the RTX 2060 to try and alleviate supply issues. Last week, a few regulatory filings confirmed that Nvidia is indeed preparing an RTX 2060, but with a twist — the company may also double the amount of VRAM, even though it probably won’t improve performance in most scenarios. However, as spotted by Tom’s Hardware, some technology enthusiasts aren’t waiting for that to happen and are perfectly comfortable with modding existing cards like the GeForce RTX 3070. Such is the case of Russian modder VIK-on, who is well known for making 16-gigabyte RTX 2070 and RTX 3070 graphics cards. The modder decided to apply the same treatment to the GeForce RTX 2060, and for that purpose he chose an Asus RTX 2060 Turbo that had a new power phase for the memory subsystem after the original one blew up. As for the memory, VIK-on chose Samsung K4ZAF325BM-HC14 GDDR6 chips that have a capacity of two gigabytes. It’s not quite what Nvidia is preparing for release, but it should be close enough to give us a good idea about what to expect from the updated card. After replacing the original memory chips, the modder ran Unigine’s Superposition benchmark as well as an Ethereum miner to see if there was any difference in performance when compared to the standard configuration. Unsurprisingly, the larger graphics memory didn’t yield any performance increase, as the tests didn’t push the memory utilization beyond six gigabytes. That said, if an application requires more than six gigabytes of VRAM, you should see a performance improvement. New games like Battlefield 2042 seem to work well at 1440p even when using a graphics cards with only six gigabytes of VRAM, but using higher quality settings pushes it to its limits. That means it won’t be long before eight gigabytes will be a must, even at medium or high graphics presets. This may also be why Nvidia is re-releasing the RTX 2060 with double the VRAM, as doing so would make it more competitive with AMD’s RX 6600 or the upcoming RX 6500 XT.
  2. Every time scientists study a new material for future batteries or investigate diseases to develop new drugs, they must wade through an ocean of data. Today, a whole ecosystem of scientific tools creates a wild variety of data to be explored. This exploration will now get a lot easier thanks to scientists at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), located at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory. Their freshly rolled-out software tool—called Tiled—allows researchers to see, slice, and study their data more conveniently than ever before. This new data access tool makes finding and analyzing the right piece of data a walk in the park compared to previous methods, paving the way for the next scientific breakthrough. As one of the 28 DOE Office of Science user facilities across the Nation, NSLS-II welcomes nearly 2,000 scientists each year to use its ultrabright light, tackling the greatest challenges in materials and life science. These visiting researchers come from around the globe to collaborate with experts and use the one-of-a-kind research tools at NSLS-II. They zap their samples, ranging from ancient rocks to novel quantum materials, with intense X-rays and catch outgoing signals using advanced detectors. In turn, these detectors spit out streams of data, waiting to be analyzed by scientists. "Working with data is a central part of all research, and yet a challenge on its own. It comes in a multitude of formats, in varying sizes and shapes, and not every piece of it is useful for the researchers. This is why developing a software tool that makes accessing, seeing, and sorting through data so important," said Dan Allan, computational scientist at NSLS-II. Tiled is a data access service for data-aware portals and data science tools. This means that Tiled sits atop databases and file systems so that scientists can access their data through, for example, a web browser or data analysis software. While the Data Science and Systems Integration (DSSI) program rolled out Tiled to all experimental stations at NSLS-II, the service, just like its cousin project Bluesky (a data acquisition software also developed at NSLS-II), can be used in any research laboratory around the globe. This is possible because Tiled is published under a po[CENSORED]r open-source software license. "Even though we developed Tiled in the programming language Python and, therefore, it integrates naturally with data science libraries based on Python, nothing about the service is Python-specific," said Stuart Campbell, chief data scientist at NSLS-II. "The client uses an API, or application programming interface, to connect the user applications with the server. An API is basically a set of rules, or a contract that defines how different software pieces communicate with each other. The great thing about this approach is that once these rules and interfaces are defined, it provides users and developers the structure within which they can build some excellent tools and expand the functionality beyond that which we had originally imagined."
  3. Xiaomi TWS 3 Pro earphones will reportedly be making their debut in the Indian market soon. The date is yet to be officially confirmed by the Chinese smartphone maker, but according to a tipster, the true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds from Xiaomi are all set to launch in the country in December 2021 or January 2022. The earphones, which arrived in China in September this year alongside the Xiaomi Civi smartphone, features adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC) feature as well. 4. Patron is a medieval city-building game that puts its own distinct spin on social dynamics, by turning citizens’ happiness into “a complete gameplay system in its own right”, which launched in August this year. Since then, it’s received a bunch of patches, hotfixes, and other bits and pieces – such as a Halloween-themed add-on. Now, there’s a new update that folds in a bunch of community-requested features. “This update is almost entirely about ‘quality-of-life’ improvements, and most of its contents is based on your input and suggestions,” developer Overseer Games says in a Steam blog post revealing the changes arriving with Update 1.050.0. The biggest addition among the list is the option to manually place your starting town hall – the central hub of power and governance in your settlement – anywhere you like on the map. “This should increase replayability and enable you to achieve more variety when building up your town,” the studio explains. Elsewhere, the devs have made some adjustments to house maintenance and resource management. For instance, you’ll now find houses deteriorate over time (approximately 40 in-game years) which means you’ll need to refurbish them to keep them in ship shape. There are also some handy new pointers aimed at “ease of play”, such as new hints and notifications, as well as a bunch of visual tweaks to make it all the more immersive. One such chance adds visuals to denote smouldering ruins left in the wake of fire disasters.
  5. Apple has hired CJ Moore who was Tesla's head of software for its AutoPilot autonomous driving system. CJ Moore recently had disputed Elon Musk's claims around AutoPilot and said that it was fundamentally a level 2 ADAS system while Musk has been pitching it as an autonomous driving system. CJ Moore will be reporting to another ex-Tesla executive Stuart Bowers who is the Vice President of engineering at Apple. In January Musk had claimed that Tesla's autopilot will be able to operate reliably to a level better than that of a human driver. Tesla's FSD driving beta went live only earlier this year but still, it doesn't make Tesla's cars fully autonomous. Tesla is also facing an investigation from authorities in the US in relation to crashes while its cars have been in AutoPilot mode. Moore was called in as a witness after a Tesla crash that left two people dead in April. The Apple Car project which has been called Project Titan has been in the works for more than half a decade - and has been riddled with issues. Apple recently lost its day-to-day chief of the project Doug Field who also left for Ford. Apple placed operational control in hands of Kevin Lynch the former Apple Watch software chief. Apple has also hired Ulrich Kranz, the co-founder of Canoo, and the former Vice President at BMW who helped create its electric cars. Apple has also poached Tesla's Andrew Kim, Michael Schewkutsch, and Steve MacManus. Apple has been struggling to close battery supply from the likes of BYD and CATL while it also still doesn't have a manufacturing partner having spoken to many players like Magna and Nissan.

  7. This summer, Valve launched a huge CS:GO art contest asking fans to create weapon skins inspired by the theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’, with the winning ten entries set to earn their makers a slice of a whopping $1 million prize pool and the addition of their creations to the live FPS game. Now, those winning weapon skins have been unveiled – and it turns out there were far more than ten worthy entries. “The CS:GO team reviewed over 15,000 entries from artists from all parts of the globe, and decided that ten winning submissions wouldn’t be enough,” Valve posts on the contest’s site. “So, an additional seven were selected (17 total) for a grand total prize pool of $1.7 million.” Phwoar. 24 different artists produced the winning creations and, impressively, 14 of these were first-time contributors to the game’s Steam Workshop. The studio says it’s getting in touch with the winning artists to work with them on shipping the dazzling new skins to the game – but we can get a good look at what’s coming right now. The contest page gives us a preview of all the winning skins, and there’s a real mix of styles in the batch. Nextgenz’s AK ‘Nightwish [Pearlescent]’ skin has a psychedelic, almost cyberpunk-style vibe with vivid colours and a stylised beast’s head among the patterns, while Sorarox’s sawed-off shotgun skin draws on a Ouija board inspiration, with a chunky, etched wood look. Maloo’s ‘Space Cat’ PP-Bizon skin is also really fun, with a cartoon-style cat in white-grey creeping its way down the weapon with a black background. Then there’s TheDanidem’s striking ‘Starlight’ skin if unicorns are your thing. You can check out the rest of the 17 winners on Valve’s site at that link. There’s no word on when they’ll hit the game just yet, but hopefully it won’t be too long from now. For the time being, there are some new Battlefield 2042 stickers that have just come to the game to celebrate the debut of DICE’s shooter, which you can pick up as a capsule if you’re keen.
  8. In context: With the GPU market in a shambolic state, some consumers desperate to upgrade their PCs are turning to pre-builds. If you're one of them, make sure the computer in question comes with a graphics card, as NZXT has joined the ranks of companies selling pre-built PCs sans the component. NZXT’s Foundation PC - H510 Edition is an impressive-looking machine. Its $799 price gets you an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G processor, 16GB of DDR4 3000, a 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD, a B550 ATX mobo, a Deepcool Gammaxx GTE V2 air cooler, and a 650W PSU, all packed inside the firm’s very nice H510 case. Conspicuously absent from that list of hardware is a graphics card. Buyers must instead rely on the Ryzen 5 5600G APU and its integrated graphics for their gaming needs. We gave the chip a score of 80 in August, noting that it offers some excellent gaming performance for an iGPU. Our tests on the Ryzen 5 5600G iGPU showed it managing around 30fps in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, all at 1080p with settings at low. CS:GO, meanwhile, can surpass 100fps at 1080p/Medium. NZXT claims its PC can manage Valorant at 112 fps and GTA at 60fps. Some may balk at the idea of gaming PC without a graphics card, but a new report shows that Ampere and RDNA 2 selling prices remain almost double their MSRP, so this might be the best option for those wanting to dive into PC gaming without spending a fortune. It’s also a compelling buy for anyone who already owns a card but doesn't want to upgrade the rest of their rig. This isn’t the first 'no-GPU' pre-built gaming PC. Fierce PC started selling its own range of gaming-focused computers with integrated graphics cards earlier this year.
  9. Economy People in Northern Ireland are being urged by Stormont ministers to work from home "where possible" in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19. Current advice already states that people should work from home where they can but ministers said they were "strengthening" that message. If follows an executive meeting about how to tackle rising infections. Ministers are also advising the public to limit their social contacts and wear face coverings in indoor settings. Northern Ireland's infection rate has been climbing over the past week or so - it is the highest in the UK, slightly above Wales, and has just overtaken the Republic of Ireland. In a joint statement after Tuesday's meeting, executive ministers said Covid-19 had "once again taken a firm grip across our society". "Hospital admissions are rising and modelling indicates that admissions will increase further in the coming weeks," the ministers said. "The clear advice from public health experts is that an intervention is now required." Ministers said that if more people worked from home it would help to reduce the risk of infection both inside and outside the workplace. However, they stopped short of ordering employers to facilitate home working, saying they "recognise that this may present challenges in some work areas". Instead, ministers said they were asking employees "to work from home where they can and advise employers to support this where possible". The statement follows a proposal from Health Minister Robin Swann, who had recently said he believed anyone working from home again last year when the pandemic began should do so again. He has warned hospitality businesses may have to close over Christmas unless coronavirus transmission rates fall. Following Tuesday's meeting, ministers urged the public to take up the offer of vaccines and booster jabs, saying statistics were stark. "Unvaccinated adults aged under 50 are almost 11 times more likely to need hospitalisation from Covid-19," they said. "Unvaccinated individuals aged 50 and over are four times more likely to die from Covid-19 than those who are fully vaccinated." Masks and scores-on-the-doors In addition to promoting the vaccine message, ministers urged the public to "make safer choices" when coming in to contact with other people. This advices includes meeting people outdoors in preference to indoors, wearing face coverings and ensuring good ventilation of indoor settings. It is understood the Stormont executive has asked its Covid taskforce to examine issues around enforcement of wearing face masks. The taskforce will also look at the potential of setting up a scores-on-the-doors type system to rate businesses on their compliance with rules and mitigations. On Tuesday, First Minister Paul Givan tweeted that the executive had "engaged constructively and agreed a number of measures that will step up our collective efforts against the spread of Covid". Earlier, Justice Minister Naomi Long said Stormont ministers may have to reintroduce some Covid-19 restrictions if there are "no alternatives". She said the executive was "looking for ways that we can avoid having to take those drastic measures" by focusing on measures such as the vaccine booster programme and Covid certification "to make high-risk venues as safe as possible". Mrs Long, the Alliance Party leader, said on Monday that ministers were "not planning for Christmas closures". On Tuesday, she told BBC News NI that there was a "critical period" ahead and "we still have it within our gift" to avoid the need for restrictions. 'Half statements' However, Colin Neill of Hospitality Ulster, which represents the hospitality industry, said the "rhetoric" coming from Stormont was unhelpful. "I appreciate that planning has to go on behind closed doors," he said, but added that politicians were making "half statements" with no promise of support if tighter restrictions are imposed. "Those statements say to our workers: 'You might not have a job before Christmas' and it says to customers: 'Stay away'." The executive met on Tuesday amid a high number of cases of Covid-19. On Monday, three Covid-19-related deaths were reported in Northern Ireland and a further 1,469 new cases. He also expressed disappointment that some hospitality venues had not acted responsibly after social distancing rules were relaxed. Orla Smyth, who owns a cafe in Belfast, told BBC News NI that speculation about future measures was not "helpful for public confidence in using services". She explained it also made it difficult for "business owners being able to function". On Tuesday, Mrs Long said she did not have a "crystal ball" about how the coming weeks will unfold, but said she believed "people have become slightly complacent because of the vaccine". When asked about the number of people who do not wear mandatory face coverings in retail settings, she said it was not the "primary responsibility" of the police to enforce this.
  10. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-59383007 Australian police have arrested a man over the disappearance of two campers from a national park 20 months ago. Russell Hill, 74, and Carol Clay, 73, were last heard from on 20 March last year when they called a friend from their remote campsite in Victoria. Despite one of the state's largest missing person investigations, there has been no trace of the hikers since. On Tuesday, Victoria Police said they had arrested a 55-year-old man from Melbourne in connection with the case. He is being questioned by police but has not been charged. Investigators believe Mr Hill and Ms Clay went missing shortly after the call to their friend using a high-frequency radio. Mr Hill had said the pair were setting up camp in the Wonnangatta Valley, near a camping ground in the Victorian Alpine National Park. Passers-by found their campsite destroyed by fire the next day, but police were not notified until later that week. Campers noticed that Mr Hill's car, parked nearby, also bore signs of fire damage. Police have conducted several extensive searches, looking for clues in the rugged terrain. The investigation has picked up in recent months. Authorities released pictures of a 4x4 car that had been spotted near the pair's campsite at the time, saying they wished to speak to the driver. The families of the missing pair have also issued appeals for information. "It's really hard. It's not getting any better not knowing. It's just unknown - he just disappeared and you're just stuck in the middle," said Mr Hill's daughter, Debbie, last month. Ms Clay's sister, Jill, said: "We need to know what happened and we need to know where their bodies are so we can put them to rest." Three other people have gone missing in the Victorian Alps in the past decade, but none are suspected to have met with foul play. Mr Hill knew the area well from frequent visits and work decades ago as a logger, local media reported.
  11. Auto Polestar has previewed the final production version of its new 5 grand tourer in a 'behind the scenes' video that explores how its design will be evolved from the striking Precept concept. Polestar’s UK R&D centre has become a development hub for the ground-breaking Precept road car, as the firm presses ahead with a production car launch in 2024. Design work is ongoing, and at this early stage, it is clear that the production car will be marked out by a more steeply raked roofline, physical door handles, more subtly integrated side skirts and a gently reworked rear end. Exterior designer Nahum Escobedo said "there's definitely a lot of things we still need to solve" but emphasised that the design tweaks will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. "From concept to production," he said, "we are very close to that idea." The 5 was confirmed for production last year after being closely previewed by the Precept, a one-off originally used as a showcase for the ambitions of Volvo’s sibling brand. It featured a number of innovative materials with sustainability as a core theme: flax-based composites cut weight by up to 50% and achieve a reduction in plastic weight of up to 80%. The Precept’s interior also uses materials such as recycled PET bottles, reclaimed fishing nets and recycled cork vinyl. Polestar’s UK team are focusing on the development of the Precept, looking into challenging engineering solutions as the Swedish manufacturer looks to upscale and mass-produce the various sustainable materials used in the EV. The brand will also significantly increase in the number of employees at the UK R&D centre at the MIRA Technology Park. The workforce will double to around 500 personnel in the near future, while the centre will continue to work closely with the headquarters in Sweden. This isn’t the first time that Polestar has expanded abroad. Along with a factory in Chengdu in China, the brand will build the upcoming Polestar 3 SUV, due in 2022, at Volvo’s US factory in Ridgehill in South Carolina. “Going electric is a pivotal moment in the history of cars,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “The combination of British engineering talent and Swedish expertise will ensure our cars are among the highest performing and most sustainable on the road.”

  17. \ Did everyone know that there was a League of Legends fighting game in the works at Riot Games? It’s been over two years since the game known as Project L was revealed and there hasn’t been much on it since – but now Riot has finally shown off the project’s first gameplay, although it still sounds a long way off. As part of the final stage of the celebration of Netflix series Arcane, which concluded this weekend, Project L game leads Tony and Tom Cannon headed a video re-revealing the game and showing off controls, a few of the characters, and how it will play. Project L is a one-versus-one assist fighter in the style of Marvel Vs Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ – where the player can call in an AI fighter to help them. The four characters shown off were Jinx, Ekko, Darius, and Ahri, and all were based on their designs in the Arcane animated series. The developers say their “goal is to deliver on the iconic moves that League champions are known for but adapted to work in a fighting game” and showed off Ekko’s move set to illustrate, complete with time mani[CENSORED]tion. Regarding controls and difficulty, the devs say that they’re “embracing the ‘easy to learn, hard to master’ mentality” so the controls will be straightforward but have a “steadily increasing difficulty curve” – so a more experienced player can still “showcase your high-end mastery”. Riot is also proud of its netcode system for Project L. While it has rollback, the developer has created “a new networking model that enhances the benefits of rollback with core technology developed by other games at Riot”, with the aim of making sure that matches aren’t affected even if one player has a bad connection. The bad news is that, while the team is “happy with how core combat is shaping up” it admits that “there’s still a ton of work to do” and they will take its time to make sure they “get this right” – so, along with the lack of an official title, Project L is likely still a long way off. Who knows, it may even release alongside the recently confirmed Arcane Season 2.
  18. Nokia said on Wednesday it plans to launch a cloud-based software subscription service targeting telecom companies for providing software around analytics, security, and data management. Many technology companies have been moving toward a subscription model from upfront licensing to build a predictable, recurring business. While some of Nokia's software portfolio will be offered under subscription from this year, more will be commercially available in early 2022. When Nokia created its software division in 2016, the idea was to get into subscription too, but we never executed, Senior Vice President Mark Bunn said in an interview. "Now we have executed on it ... we have built underlying technology to be able to operate at scale," he said. A cloud-based software platform can lower costs, make it easier to deploy and manage, and customers can try the platform before committing for long-term use. Nokia, which has been in discussions with potential customers, said it is targeting an addressable market of $3.1 billion (roughly Rs. 23,060 crore) for the 2021-2025 period, with an annual growth rate of about 25-30 percent.

  20. The big picture: TSMC, the world’s largest foundry, said in its most recent financial report that it accepted an unprecedented amount in advance payments for its future manufacturing capacity this year. Hopefully, that money will accelerate the construction of new equipment to build processors. As the public-facing computer manufacturers continue to fail to deliver hardware into the hands of consumers, the attention has turned towards the foundries for long-term solutions to the chip shortage. In the past, the main way TSMC has allowed customers to reserve capacity was through "guarantee deposits," a one-time payment from that was refunded when the customer finalized their order. TSMC is continuing to accept guarantee deposits; in fact, about two-thirds of the NT$642 (US$23) million of guarantee deposits that it’s holding were paid in the past nine months. But this year, the company shifted its focus onto "temporary receipts" for future capacity, which are effectively pre-payments. TSMC signed deals for NT$106 (US$3.8) billion in temporary receipts this year. The money isn’t TSMC’s to keep until it’s met the "terms and conditions set forth in the agreements" with its customers, and hence there are rules about how it can be spent. But the idea is that TSMC will use it to create more manufacturing capacity for customers to buy. TSMC’s report doesn’t disclose the details of the agreements nor does it say who the customers are. At a guess, the largest is probably Apple, which taps TSMC for all its iPhone and Mac SoCs. AMD could be close behind. Last month, AMD said that it had prepaid US$355 million to various foundries this year. Qualcomm is probably up there, too. Neither Intel nor Nvidia rely heavily on TSMC at the moment, but both have reportedly been discussing the manufacture of their next-gen GPUs with the foundry. At some point in the future, TSMC might be the sole supplier of GPU chips.
